Oscar de la Renta Fall 2013 Collection

Posted on February 20, 2013

It’s kind of hard to picture a John Galliano/Oscar de la Renta melding of aesthetics, but The Master asked Galliano to come in and wave his Galliano hands over this collection to see what would happen. The result is still very Oscar, but with an undeniably Parisian feel to it. The silhouettes are the same feminine, classic ones you would expect from OdlR, but there’s a pleasingly unexpected severity brought in with the colors and the textiles. It works – and it never strays from the brand’s elegant aesthetic. We especially love the “vintage” fabrics in their bold colors; elegant, retro and just a teeny bit edgy at the same time.

i would LOVE to see chastain in the 3rd row from the bottom center

      • SewingSiren

Judging by his choice of model, I think he would also.

        • lehen

fair enough – i was clearly handed that one.

      • Alyssa

I think she would rock the blue one on the bottom as well.

    • Annabelle Archer

I could see many different kinds of lady stars wearing these.  There were some Jolie dresses, some Chloe (or her alters) looks, a couple of Cates, and any one of the little waifs with blunt bangs that have been popping up lately.

      • SewingSiren

Yes. All of them + Mrs. Obama too!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=678337501 Carla Axtman

The outfit in the first frame is TO DIE TO DIE TO DIE.  So. Much. Love.

    • hmariec19

I LOVE THIS! All of it. So much color!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

A lot of truly spectacular pieces here.  You can certainly see Galliano’s hand in this, with regard to the edginess, and intensity of a lot of the work.  Its appears most clearly in the gowns, especially the last row.  HATE the hats with a screaming purple passion.  There, now I feel better.

      • TRSTL

Agreed on the hats.  “Dickheads”, literally….

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I am sometimes awestruck by the seeming desire of designers to offset the lovliness of their work with styling that is not just edgy, or unique, but simply ill proportioned, and unflattering.

        • barbarienne

My reaction was “All I see are nipple hats.” Like a giant baby bottle.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

Ugh those hats look like board game pieces. I can picture the models gliding over a board game (Sorry, perhaps?) and advancing 4 tiles.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Hee hee!  Think of them all on roller skates, so they can slide over the giant game board easily.

        • Carrieanno

The hats remind me of those little rubber thingies you put on one finger to make collating papers easier.  They’re invariably red.

          • RebeccaKW

I was thinking thimble, but yours is more accurate.

          • YoungSally

I’ve heard them referred to (in various professional kitchens) as “finger condoms.”

            • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

They’re actually called finger cots, but yours is much more amusing.

            • YoungSally

Oops — my  bad….but I like mine too.

          • RoxieRider

My rorschach was ear plug. But honestly, I might’ve been ok with them without the f-ing hair scraggles. Artfully messy is a runway thing, but jesus.

In other news, however, the collection is breathtakingly fabulous.

        • YoungSally

I think McQueen did that once with a chessboard and crazy leather outfits.

    • stellamaris73

With the exception of the feather dress, I love this collection.

HATE the hair and makeup. Horrible. Completely detracts from the delicious clothes.

      • meowing

Yes–love the collection, hated the makeup.  I scrolled down just enough to chop off the models’ heads, then focused on the beautiful clothes.  Sorry, models.

        • GorgeousThings

I did the same thing. Hate hate HATE the hair and makeup. They are way too distracting.

      • MissMariRose

Agree. The makeup and hair makes the models look like greasy zombies.

      • http://twitter.com/KayleyMaybe Kayley Maybe

What’s strange is it looks fine in the first few rows, but then the girls get greasier and more zombie looking as you scroll down…

        • poggi

I noticed that too.  I guess greasy hair/zombie makeup is more of an evening thing.

      • carolie_king

I was going to say the same, except replace “feather” with “big bird”.  And I agree on the above-the-neck styling for the most part.

    • zenobar

A gorgeous collection, but I just can’t with those dildous hats in the first two rows.

      • poggi

That is perfect adjective and it is horrifying that it so aptly fits.

    • SewingSiren

This is a beautiful collection. My favorite is the lime green brocaded trapeze dress with those sheer yellow and pink gloves. Sheer gloves are usually so horribly tacky , but these look so right. I’m sure they are part of the Galliano touch.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

That is my favorite, too. I love the ladylike silhouettes!

    • Tapetum

Very pretty. I’d like the middle skirt in the 5th row please – skip the top, and the purple ballgown is stunning.

However, judging by several different runway shows, Muppets may soon be on the endangered species list. I cannot get behind that.

    • BuffaloBarbara

The purple and silver in the last row… Ooo!  Shiny!  I like some of the hooded capes, and the little black dress in the middle of row three is terrific.  I need an LBD.  I think this one is out of my range, but hopefully, someone will make a derivative one at a lower price point soon…

      • ankali

I love that LBD. It is the paragon of LBDs.

    • mjude

      once again….love it all

    • lrhoff

Oscar was wise to bring in reinforcements, because this collection is stunning!!  I love every single piece and would especially die for the red hat at the beginning — ahhhh.

      • lizajane1776

I saw that hat and thought of Doctor Who.

        • MilaXX

I thought of the mumbling guy from the old Bill Cosby cartoons.

          • filmcricket

            Mushmouth reference FTW!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=679263485 Edmund Heng

This is probably the most beautiful collection I’ve ever seen.

    • BrooklynBomber

That gold outfit at the top is MINE!

    • RebeccaKW

Love a lot of this.  It must be the Miss Piggy in me, b/c I’m digging the gloves also.

    • Janet B

Gorgeous fabrics and colors. I love the gloves, but who would wear them successfully?

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I love these posts – I try to learn the designers this way.  So, Masters-Class BK’s, might I pick your brain?  I hear what Prof’s T & Lo are saying but don’t have the knowledge to see it myself.  Could you point out an example above that helps me see the ODLR and see the JG?

      • MilaXX

Not a master by any means, but the peplums feel very JG. I can almost see Marion C in them as well as that green smirt/muppet combo. I see OdR in those floral ballgowns. Im sure the BK’s that know more about fashion and sewing may have better insight.

        • HomeOfficeGirl

          Excellent – thanks!

      • Lisa_Cop

I’ll bet the first two rows, the hats and the black skinny jeans are Galliano.

    • kategs

Fourth row down center is mine!  And I know we are not to discuss the hair and make-up but I totally agree with a prior poster who pointed out that when it’s as bad as this is it does pull focus from the incredible clothing and how can that be good?

    • GorgeousThings

Pretty enough. I doubt we’ll see any of these on FLOTUS, much to Oscar’s chagrin. The mermaid hair is very distracting, as is the awful makeup. And tell me the gray cape wasn’t lifted from Young Cosette in “Les Mis”

      • MilaXX

I was thinking French Lt”s Woman

    • Tatiana Luján

Except fror the first row and the hats, i love all of this

    • teensmom99

I am pretend buying the whole collection.

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Loving the jewel tones, but those caps made me laugh out loud.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

they are rather silly, but i can see why they were chosen with those boxier pieces. the caps did elongate the model

    • MilaXX

A bit hit or miss for me. Those long peplums and hats make everything look droopy to me. I like rows 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.  Over I like not love this collection.

      • Lisa_Cop

Interesting since I’ll bet the first 2 rows are JG.

        • MilaXX

    • Pants_are_a_must

Lovely, but I still want to kick Galliano’s teeth in, so no thank you.

      • Deedles

You know, I was thinking that the public has a short memory regarding him, so I am glad you said this! I am with you. Some of these are lovely, but I just CAN’T with that guy.

        • Lisa_Cop

Who among us has not ever said something sexist, racist ever. And I forgive him and I’m Jewish. He didn’t say he wanted to resurrect the Holocaust. His anti-Semitic remarks were said while he was drunk. They were btw, no worse than I’ve heard people say here in NYC when they don’t realize I’m Jewish. When I tell them they blanch with embarrassment.

          • pippitypup

Not only that, but what does it say about us that a drunk guy yelling stupid insults was raised to the level of criminal?  Whatever happened to saying, “John, you’re drunk. STFU and go home.” ? Or would people not get offended enough? There’s so much real, active anti-Semitism out there that this just felt like an attack on someone whom the Industry decided should be a whipping boy for beliefs a lot of them won’t admit to having.

          • Verascity

People rarely say things drunk that they’re not thinking when sober.

            I’m Jewish and I don’t forgive him.

      • ankali

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

Am I the only one distracted by the hair? The top curl is pretty, but the ends look greasy and tangled

    • d4divine

      Love it!!

    • prettybigkitty

This is my favorite collection so far.   L-O-V-E everything about it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

Ooooh. Please tell me opera gloves are coming back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/henry.maler Henry Maler

Calling it now: J Lo will wear that slinky black lace one to the Oscars.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The color story is fantastic.  And I do love the gloves.

    • MaryanneGirl

I feel like a kid in the candy store! YUMMY!

    • http://www.facebook.com/darva.sutra Darva Sutra

Hmmm.  Speaking of pinterest, I just tried to click on your “follow us” link and it appears you don’t have any boards yet.  Please do start up, I’d certainly follow!

    • Imasewsure

If I were Gerry Hall, I would have this whole collection shipped to my doorstep…. gorgeous (although I don’t love some of the super bright pieces)

    • poggi

I love the bottom row of gowns, particularly the pink.  I love the electric color.  For some reason I see the flaming eye of Mordor in the middle dress, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

As the Grace Kelly Drag Show continues, I would like to see Nicole Kidman in the LBD third row, center – and maybe the much more interesting sixth row, left.  I’d also love to see Audreybot in the one second row from the bottom, left.  Divine!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The grey Hooded Cape. Give it to me and no one gets hurt.

    • sweet_potato

Oh hell yeah.  How many of these looks can I copy for my own wardrobe (aside from the gowns), hmmm. Third row center is KILLER.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

A really beautiful collection. I don’t love all of it, but the pieces that I *do* love are really, REALLY compelling. The purple with silver detailing in the last row is one of my favorites.

    • Jecca2244

this is the first collection of ODLR’s in a long time where I would buy every piece.

    • Trisha26

Love all the black pieces…then there’s the “Yeti” gown.

    • ConnieBV

I keep thinking what I would wear if I were Christina Hendricks. Maybe the teal gown? Really, not much for a busty gal in the way of evening wear….

    • Zippypie

I think this is the first ODL collection that I’ve seen where I’ve loved the daywear pieces much much more than the eveningwear.  Some of the gowns are much too fussy and voluminous with folds (or yak fur – what the hell is that?) or the prints on the gowns are so large that they would be difficult to wear even for a tall woman since these models look engulfed.  The styling as a little hard to look past with this collection which was unfortunate.

    • Alyssa

Beautiful dresses here…so many I hope to see on the ladystars soon. And, I’ll take one of those hooded cape jackets please!

    • TSkot

    • kimmeister

I’m such a sucker for a teal/purple combination.  I swoon over the teal pencil skirt and gloves, although I’d ditch fur piece.

    • PastryGoddess

I desperately want that teal and cream skirt paired with the acid green top

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Loads of stunning looks and just a few fugs.

    • libraangel

Love, except for that stupid thimble hat.

    • spooki C

I stopped in my tracks when I saw those goofy hats. They’re alllllllmost chic but totally fug. The color story here is great and I love a good hot pink but that gown is tacky.

    • Anniebet

The casual looks I love, except for the flowerpot hats, of course. Then come the garish prints – ugh. Then the evening wear, with models styled like witches in training. Fugly hair and makeup really detract from the garments in this case, IMO. Truly not so thrilled with this collection, overall, in spite of a few outstanding pieces.

      LOVE the gloves though.

    • Louise Bryan

Is that green dress in the 6th row a harbinger of the new Oscar de la Futuro maternity line?

    • NYCGlamourpuss

As others have pointed out, it’s all lovely till you get to those hats, which just kind of wreck it.

    • Lisa_Cop

Love, love, LOVE it. And Galliano is too great a talent to waste if they don’t want him in Paris.

    • quiltrx

Left and right of the bottom row, please.

Some of it is so ‘interesting’ that it looks poorly fitted (or uncomfortable)…but any collection with a cape is okay by me!

    • pippitypup

      Row 7, Look 3.

I’m glad someone has finally decided to create a look for the criminally underserved Lady Bigfoot.

    • demidaemon

The make-up here is a little bit frightening. I couldn’t really get past it by the last row to see the clothes.

    • PinkLemon

is it just me or is ‘edgy’ completely over used in the fashion world? i’m jaded to what they call ‘edgy’ these days. i mean, hell, thom browne is edgy. oscar will never be.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Those hats are just silly.  Silly.  And he did design for that horrid creature Ann Romney.  I know because I was sitting in the HAIR DRESSER and she was telling everyone within earshot about her own fabulousness and how much Oscar “just absolutely LOVES me!”  I wanted to vomit.  And kick her.  So I have problems with Ol’ Oscar for that.  I know, it’s irrational.  But there it is.
