Michelle Williams Double Shot

Posted on February 20, 2013

We’re not gonna lie; there are certain celebrities that always induce sighs of relief in us when they have a new project out and have to go on a poledance tour. There are a handful of them (Blanchett, Hathaway, Swinton, et al) that a celebrity fashion blogger can always count on to bring interesting, discussable outfits to the table. And since Anne Hathaway has, by now, completely overwhelmed the western hemisphere with her ubiquity and toothy grin, it’s with great relief that we turn to Michelle to step in and take over. We need a new pixie because the old one started getting on everyone’s nerves, is what we’re saying.

Michelle Williams makes an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ in Louis Vuitton.

We’re not entirely sure that leather top works for a sit-down A.M. interview, but we dig the pants and shoes, and we like the look overall for being different and for bringing a tiny little bit of an edge (albeit a twee edge, if that makes any sense) to the vast bowl of oatmeal known as morning talk shows.

For Late Night, she went full-on, no-edge twee:

While we think the dress is adorable and her legs are brag-worthy, this is tipping over into “porcelain figurine” levels of twee. It’s just a bit too precious for us. Slap a couple of booties on those feet and we might perk up a bit, but as is, this look leaves us a little flat.

    LOVING the hair.

    • call_me_schmeg

i’ve been itching to chop my hair, so i made an appointment with my hairdresser tomorrow. this picture is going with me…

      • Alyssa

I too saved the pic to take to my hairdresser on Saturday! Killer pixie, love it!

      • While I love my pixie, I kind of think that this particular hairstyle looks like a pain in the ass to upkeep – any growth and it’ll look unbalanced, no?

        • call_me_schmeg

not as terrible as you would think. then again, my hair doesn’t grow super fast.

          • Jealous! I have a little boy shag within a month of a perfectly sculpted pixie.

          • call_me_schmeg

            my blessing and my curse.

        • This is pretty similar to how mine is cut. I’m letting it grow out and so far it’s not too bad. If I wanted to keep it I would probably get once a month cuts since I don’t I’m going to try for 2 or 3.

      • AnneElliot

This is how my hair is SUPPOSED to look.  Sadly, it’s gotten curlier as I’ve gotten older, and it only looks good immediately after a professional blow-out.  Le sigh.

    •  I’m just please to see that the cut has been reclaimed from Kate Gosselin….

    • Spicytomato1

And I’m loving that you can discern that she’s growing it out. I’d venture to guess that many celebs would lengthen their hair with extensions instead of revealing their growing pains. Michelle — she’s just like us!

  • I like that she wore the same shoes

  • tallgirl1204

In the second look, all I could think was brrrrrrr….

  • abfidy

Maybe I’ve just seen her in too many depressing movies, but she’s just one of those people whose face makes me want to cry even when she looks happy. As for fashion, yes she’s twee, but she almost never looks sloppy or uncomfortable in what she’s wearing. Girl is committed to the twee thing she’s going for and it genuinely seems to work for her features. Even if I would never wear what she wears, I love her style.

  • imperfectlaura

Even though the leather top may not work that well, I applaud the choice because it is something I never thought Michelle would chose.  I love the skirt.  The second look is too twee (aka too expected from MW).

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I agree.  The first look is a refreshing change for her Royal Tweeness.

  • aeb1986

Wow! Her calves! I love the first look and WANT that leather jacket.

    • NC_Meg

Seriously! Who knew she had such enviable legs?

      • roadtrip1000

All I see when I look at her legs are foreshortened calf muscles. Not a good look to my eyes but I seem to be in the minority.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

I thought I was the only one who didn’t love the look of her legs.  I don’t see the appeal when the thighs are the same circumference as the calves (or ankles for that matter)

  • jw_ny

Do you think she went to her stylist and asked for the “Kate Gosselin reverse mullet”?

XD…actually this is kind of cute on Michelle, not so pixie cutesy any longer.

  • Kyle Crawford

Im not sure how a Christian Dior LBD is twee… I think she looks great.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not reading twee from that LBD, either.  I’m liking both looks, but especially her hair.

  • I love everything about the first look – head to toe. I seriously want the pants AND the shoes. I better start saving my pennies.

The second look just gets a “meh” from me. But I still want the shoes.

ETA: The handler in the navy coat with the fur collar? Her dress is TOO. SHORT.

    • ankali

Re: the handler, on the bright side, the navy coat itself is awesome.

      • par3182

Busy Phillips is going to cut that bitch.

      •  I also loved the coat on the handler.

  • procrastinatrice

I love both outfits, but especially the second one. To me, it screams classic, not twee.

  • christinewithanx

Way too rockstar for GMA. I may start an ongoing drinking game of seeing her with her lips pursed. She is just the pursiest!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

But at least she is smiling and flashing her pearly whites at the camera.  I was seriously getting worried all her teeth had fallen out.  Nobody wants a Gummy Pixie.

  • Qitkat

IF I could wear short hair, this is exactly how i would want it to look. But does it stick up in the morning every which way like most mortals?

    • As a bearer of a pixie, I can tell you: yes. But it dries fast so you can wash the cowlicks out anyway.

  • In_Stitches

The first look is sort of a Chanel by way of a biker gang-a pretty solid mixing of aesthetics that definitely works for me.

I’m not seeing any twee in that second look; it’s plain sexy and I’m loving it.

  • Really like the lady pants.

  • BrooklynBomber

Not loving the coat dress’ funny proportions, but LOVING those red pants. Serious covetousness going on here. Those, plus the jacket in a non-leather version. Stat.

  • Dot

I adore her hair. She looks great to my eyes, and nothing here reads “twee” in the slightest to me. She looks classic and poised.

  • DTLAFamilies

I think the color of the second outfit and the shoe style keep it from being too twee. If it were a pastel or white, it would give you a toothache.

  • Stacey Moriarty

Love her Letterman dress and her date’s coat.

  • gabbilevy

I watched the Letterman interview and she looked not at all twee. And she has this cool ear clamp on her right ear (you can see it in the last photo) that was *way* edgier than I expect from Michelle.

The only complaint I had about that dress is it ballooned up a little around the waist when she sat down–otherwise she looked sharp and fabulous.

  • Alyssa

I think she should have switched the looks…the twee for morning, and edge for evening.

    • kschwarting

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking, and I had to scroll down to see if someone else had said it first.  The first outfit is edgier and evening-appropriate, while the black dress is perfectly polished for morning TV (though I’d like a bit of color in there somewhere via shoes or a belt).

Her face and hair look fantastic, though, and no matter how much I work out I will never have legs that good.

  • stubbornthoughts

    She looks great in both.

Fashion aside, she seems really happy! I think Jason Segel is treating her well. And she deserves it, with all that’s happened. You go Jen Lindley!

  • Fordzo

    I love her hair cut.

  • jilly_d

nope, loving them both.  And since I right now have the “Ginnifer Goodwin” haircut, I sincerely hope that when I grow mine out, it looks as good as hers.

  • I love the new hair.  The Dior as she is wearing it, is very boring. Nary an accessory to be found.

  • Rand Ortega

2nd look: Twee & the Twee-ettes! They’re Zoey Deschanel’s opening act. So adorkable!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Zoey Deschanel gives me the dry heaves.

  • I really want those pants.
    That’s all.

  • mjude

i love both looks & her hair.  she looks great.

  • My biggest concern is seeing these names in the same phrase:  “Blanchett, Hathaway, Swinton”.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Blanchett, Hathaway, Swinton, can I help you?”

  • Tashina Savage

I LOVE the second look. Girl can do no wrong for me. Say it once, say it again.

    • Same here-she has a particular style, and one that usually has me coveting her clothes. That dress is fantastic.

And I LOVE the pants in the first look.

  • miagain

    I want her handler’s coat…

  • E. D.

    Love both.

  • J’adore the second look.  And her hair is faaaabulous.

  • decormaven

That’s a PB for her hair. Loving the a.m. look, and the p.m. look is not half bad. Would have liked to have seen some jewelry for that second look.

  • kimmeister

I absolutely love the LV outfit on her.  Making that top in leather is unexpected, and I like it!

  • MilaXX

I like both looks, but yeah the 2nd is a little precious.

  • Annabelle Archer

    The hair is smashing.
The AM outfit is cute enough.  I agree, there is a touch of edginess to it that she owns well.
The dress is not giving me the feelings of ‘twee’.  It’s sexy in a somebody’s mother kind of way.
Both outings are fun, and well executed, in my opinion.

  • Jecca2244

omg i love it all on her. can’t wait for Carey Mulligan to do the tour for Gatsby. (even though they woefully miscast Tobey Whatshisface. That’s not what Nick Carraway looked like! at least in my mind…I digress)

  • mhleta

That first outfit is slap-your-mamma cute. The coat dress is too boxy for one with such skinny legs. It actually looks like a paper doll outfit on her. I’m glad to have her assume the role of your current obsession, however. I think Anne Hathaway has filled that role nicely but it’s time to move on. I really didn’t get sick of her, but clearly many others here did and the shrieking was upsetting my delicate nerves.

  • pattyw

I thought I had a pretty good built-in twee detector and no alarms went off with either Williams outfit. In fact, that second dress seems the anti-twee. Not a Peter Pan collar in sight.

  • Judy_J

Love the Vuitton outfit!  That leather jacket is great, and I love the detail around the neckline…looks to be velvet, which is a nice touch.  Not as big a fan of the Dior, but it’s still pretty great.  Looks like she’s wearing the same shoes with both outfits.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Hey, I just got a new twee detector at Best Buy! 😉

  • ankali

I don’t get twee from the Dior: it’s streamlined, black, and makes a “she’s-naked-under-that-trench-coat” suggestion. I think she looks fabulous.

  • ojosazules

Black and tailored doesn’t strike me as twee. She looks really sharp in both.

  • I CRAVE those pants.

  • Kristy Evans

Yeah… that second dress definitely needed a super awesome shoe to bring up the look. I think the two outfits should have been reversed.

  • Zippypie

  • SugarSnap108

I love both looks, but my heart has always tilted twee.

  • Who’s the lady w/ the trowelled-on makeup?  I think she looks great in the dress though I wish she had worn some kind of jewelry to jazz it up a bit.

  • Trisha26

    Love her.

  • kmk05

The first look is a killer! Coupled wit the hair, it is amazing.

I could take or leave the second one in terms of clothing, but her hair and her legs are just.. GUH. Love that she wore the same pair of shoes!

  • Anniebet

Now, this short hair is fab. Unlike Ms.Goodwin’s unflattering boy cut, Michelle’s has pizzazz and umph!

    Love the pants.

  • crash1212

Ain’t nothing “twee” about that second look to my eye. It looks polished and spare and pretty cool. I like it with the shoes, but I would’ve worn boots.  I do love her asymmetric hair. It suits her.

  • l_c_ann

Does she have a minon (to her right) who is helping her walk?

  • margaret meyers

I like both looks.  She has a controlled style that tends towards twee.  She wears it well.

  • bd73

top look is gorgeous. your edgy/twee comment is dead on. it’s a…prim girl-woman look. “i could be full-on rockstar, but i’m simply too young for diamonds and, well…you do understand.”

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I freaking LOVE the first look, head to toe!  Ironically enough, the look on the model is way too twee – Michelle’s little leather jacket gives it more of an edge and keeps the whole thing from being too cutesy.

Now the second look? Honey, no.  I’ve been an admin assistant for 24 years, and this is something I’d have worn to work in 1992.

  • PeaceBang

“Get back in the knife drawer, Miss Sharp.” And I mean that in a really good way. I love both looks. Sharp as hell.

  • I honestly think she looks pretty great in both looks, and she usually gives me a toothache.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    Love both

  • ChaquitaPhilly

I see your point, but she really does look great in BOTH looks!

  • nannypoo

This woman is to me what Taylor Swift seems to be to all the other Bitter Kittens. I can’t stand her. In addition to her prissy clothes and her lemon-sucking camera face, what really annoys me is how, every time she’s nominated for an award, she makes the rounds of the talk shows and tells the amusing story of how she “forgot” the awards announcements were happening that day. Disingenuous? Yes. Cute? Not even.

  • IDK. Looks like she’s wearing a protective cup under those pants…

  • Imasewsure

Love them both… I don’t even think the second look is too twee since she added the long sleeves…love love the hair

  • snarkykitten

Is she wearing pants in that second one?

  • guest2vists

Thank the stars… she let the twee hair grow out; this suits her SO VERY much more. I what she’s wearing; both pics.

  • kathrineb

I LOVE the hair and first outfit. More Michelle posts please!

  • libraangel

Sorry, but I don’t agree cause those pants look weird in the crotch area, and I am so over platform, big shoes on petite girls: they look like Minnie Mouse. Second look: why doesn’t she take her coat off? (sarcastically speaking)

  • libraangel

p.s. Nothing personal, because I don’t know Michelle, but her appearance or style or something is always so cute/sugary, I’m becoming a diabetic!

  • LOVING stacked heels finally coming back… so sick of stilettos… my poor ankles… (but platforms, yuck)

  • ccm800

if Renee Zelweger and Nicole Kidman had a kid together it would look like Micelle Williams
