Michelle Dockery in Burberry

Posted on February 19, 2013

Lady Mary has always been something of a disappointment in her real-world public appearances. We wouldn’t want this kind of pressure for ourselves (although it’s about as first-world as first-world problems get), but she’s so striking and her role on Downton Abbey allows her to look shockingly beautiful for hours on end, that she’d have to be flawlessly stylish to live up to people’s expectations of her. In other words, she was bound to disappoint.

But this’ll do quite nicely:

Michelle Dockery attends the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2013 show at Kensington Gardens, London.

Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2012 Bag

Add her to that large pile of ladystars who can’t quite get her formal looks locked down, but comes alive when she’s allowed to dress more casually. There’s obviously nothing difficult about this outfit, but it’s really well put together and the easy chicness of it suits her perfectly. We can’t really get behind the hair, but she’s clearly in shock and mourning, like everyone else who watched the Downton season finale, so we’ll let that slide.

  • I LOVE the coat! The gloves are cool too.

  • This might seem odd, but, wow, she has gorgeous pale skin.

    • I could not believe how white her arms were in the scenes where they were playing… whatever that was. Paper white. Not that thre’s anything wrong with it, just coming from a FL girl

    • A. W.

She makes me feel better about being the color of printer paper.

    • SapphoPoet

I read somewhere (perhaps here?) that it’s in her Downton Abbey contract that she has to stay out of the sun and not get tan.

      •  Hah. Some of us stay #FFFEFE no matter how much time we spend in the sun.

        • SerpentsDance

I don’t tan. I burn. When the burn fades, I’m still pale. I have never been able to convince people that I can’t tan. I’m half turkish-cypriot and half irish mutt. I got all the irish paleness in my skin, and all of the turkish darkness in my hair and eyes. I look like I should be able to tan, but nope. Not that I’d want to, anyways. I like being pale. I wish it’d come back into fashion so people would stop telling me I need a tan or calling me Casper.

  • schadenfreudelicious

the shoes are a little hoovey for my taste, but she looks well put together…the hair is most unfortunate, did she hack it off with nail scissors on the way over?…

  • Vickiefantastico

She looks great, although the lack of button holes on the coat make me giggle a little.

    • phoenix4

in the 5th pic down, you can see the inside of the coat, and it looks like they’re snaps!

      •  They look unfortunately like dog teats.

      • Vickiefantastico

Ahh, yes. I see it now. I stared at these for awhile before posting and never saw them! Still looks funny to me.

      • kathrineb

Yes they seem to be THE WORLDS BIGGEST SNAPS.

    • Jangle57

I think those are really large snaps, not buttons.  If you look at the one shot, you can see the interior of the coat and it looks like there’s a corresponding snap in there.

    • Janet B

      Giant snaps.
I find them jarring to look at. I wonder if they are hard to snap/unsnap.

      •  I’m willing to bet they are some kind of mod magnetic button connector.  Snaps are so 1950’s.

  • Sobaika

Man, she is pretty. Not many women could get away with being that fresh-faced.

    • call_me_schmeg

her skin is beautiful! i do wish she would add just a teeny tiny touch of blush. girl has got cheekbones for days.

  • Reneesance

Oooh they’re giant snaps on the coat not buttons, that makes much more sense to me on second viewing.

  • Annabelle Archer

So, we’re peg-legging our pants again?  That’s back?
It’s all too a little “they handed this to me and told me to wear it outside” for my liking, but she certainly doesn’t look offensive or tacky in any way.

    • It’s been back for a while. It looks fine with the cigarette pants she has here, I think.

      • Annabelle Archer

My short legs and lack of actual ankles weep.

        • Aw. I have short legs and I like the pegged style in tight pants with flats and a hip-grazing top – very 60s.
However, I do agree that it’s really horrible when they try to do it with a pleated trouser – should never taper, should never be pegged. BLEEEAH.

  • Love, love, love the bag.

    • Cele Deemer

      The bag is BOFFO!

    •  Ditto. I bet we could take her…

    • Kristin McNamara

And in that close-up… Clean, normal, naked nails! How refreshing! 🙂

  • d4divine

    She looks great.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t mind the hair, she looks very pretty.
She and Burberry make such a great couple.

  • She’s got the same “problem” as January Jones and Christina Hendricks. They’re all beautiful in real life, but they’re exceptionally stunning with the styling from the eras their shows depict.

  • Nyltiak

    I COVET that coat.

  • Susan Crawford

This proves the time-honored adage that a gal can’t go too far wrong with a well-cut, classic coat, a fabulous bag and a simple pair of trousers topped with an immaculate white shirt. I would have loved a smoothed-out shinier bob for the hair and less clunky shoes, but these are minor details.

    I definitely need that bag.

  • Introspective

that coat is sickening. without it the outfit would be ho hum. with it? ever so deserving of snaps and gasps. love.

  • butterflysunita

    Oh, I love that coat.

  • bertkeeter

She’s a widow now with a new born baby…glad to see her dressing more baby friendly! Look no TIARA!

    • not_Bridget

Yes, that hour a day with the kid is so taxing.  However, her ladies’ maid could do better with the hair…

  • That is a BEAUTIFUL coat. I *do* need a new winter coat…

  • Stubenville

The clothes look nice – just dressy enough while remaining comfortable looking and unfussy. That hair is not jolly looking, however.

  • CakesOnAPlane

    I cherish her eyebrows.

  • Beardslee

I wonder what it’s like to be someone like her- a struggling actress cast in a boffo hit; all of a sudden you’re thrust into borrowed clothes and expected to attend fashion shows and all the rest.  All that attention, and all those expectations for how you will look.  Someone pressuring you to wear those hooves, etc etc etc. Must be quite odd.  Maybe great, but still – odd.
She looks lovely but I wonder if it feels like her life.

  • She looks so young! And nothing at all like Lady Mary!

  • MilaXX

I like the look but wish she was wearing a shirt with some color for contrast.

  • leave_Blake_alone

Those buttons – are they snaps? – on the coat look weird as shit. Still, a pretty cute look.

  • insertclevername_ici

I’m still sad you didn’t give her a WERQ for her dress at the golden globes. So much more deserved than Taylor Swift and a personal best for Lady Mary.
This is chic. I think she also needs to figure out her real life non-formal make-up. As a girl who similarly looks like I haven’t had a day of sunlight in my life, I sympathize. She needs to find a way to evoke “alabaster” rather than “pale.”

    • formerlyAnon

It’s hard to do that when you’re going to be photographed (in my less-than-expert opinion). So many products which read translucent/alabaster/ever-so-faintly pearlescent in real life, seem to read “shiny” or “walking dead” in photos.

  • moppet

    Her skin is so gorgeous.

  • moppet

Uh oh, I just noticed her pant cuffs are uneven, and now my eye has started twitching. She needs a lady’s maid to take care of these details.

    • carpediva

Yes, I was also muy distracted by the cuffscrepancy!

  • ConnieBV

I just want to know what kind of eyelash curler she uses. Or she had them permed. That has got to be a perm.

  • Great coat, great bag, great gloves.  Hate the shoes.

  • mmc2315

I could stare at her for hours.

  • jw_ny

I didn’t even notice any of the details and accessories…my eyes stayed fixated on those buttons.   Are they buttons or snaps? I just don’t know…whatever they are, they’re ugly and distracting. They look like giant nipples. Seems like they’d be a PITA to open/close…probably why the coat is left in the open position.

    • Given that there are no button holes and the inside view of the coat, they look like big snaps.

      • mhleta

They are big snaps. They also used hook and eye closures on the collar. Clever.

        • Aren’t hook and eye closures pretty standard on collars in a lot of coats? I’ve got a pretty traditional looking red overcoat from Anne Klein with the same type of closure on the collar.

          • l_c_ann

I wish the color hook and eye weren’t black, it looks like left over basting thread.

Like so many here, I am wondering about the giant snaps.  I think someone later than this thread suggests that they are magnets, and that would make more sense than trying to get a snap to work.  Has anyone seen sports clothes with this sort of closure?  They look like the sorts of things that go to outdoors (as in Great Out Doors) wear rather than citified outdoor wear.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I’m fairly light complected, but compared to Michelle Dockery I look downright tan and I’ve spent the whole winter in the the Northeast. I like her outfit.

  • Trisha26

Don’t like the turned up hem on the pants.

  • Zippypie

The coat, bag and gloves are wonderful.  The rolled up pants are tragedy.  If you don’t have time to hem, get some hemming tape and iron that sucker up inside! I’ll be so glad when hoof shoes go away.  They’d be nice if they didn’t have that hideous platform.

Her hair is pretty limp.  She could have pulled a comb through it and pulled it back all the way for an improvement.  Is her hair in a shorter bob now?

  • She just needs to put some serum in her hair to get it to lay properly – this looks like a perfectly serviceable little bob.
I am so jealous of that purse. Waaant. The coat ain’t bad neither.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Love it all! Even the hair!

  • kschwarting

I’m coveting the coat–and her skin!  The woman is luminous.

  • AuntieAnonny

Hate the shoes, but wow does she look good.

  • Lilithcat

    I love the gloves.

  • procrastinatrice

The bag, the gloves…coveting hard right about now.

  • She always reminds me of Julia Stiles.

  • mhleta

This is a really smart look. I deduct points for the cuffed pants and the fact that the male end of the gigantic snaps goes into nipple territory, I give them back because I think it’s pretty clever to put giant snaps on a trench, but then I take the points away again when I think of how awkward it must be to line the snaps up and close them. But then I give them back because the black lining inside the collar of her otherwise simple white shirt thrills me a little. I’ve lost count. Are we ahead or behind? It doesn’t matter. Over all this is a great pulled together look and any criticisms I could come up with are fairly insignificant.

  • Cathy S

I wish I had money. I love Burberry so very much.

  • Alyssa

Gorgeous coat, gloves, & purse. I’ll take them all!

  • Candigirl1968

    Gimme. Now.

  • Qitkat

I just adore it when a very neutral non-color has such awesome details—all the top stitching, the perfect collar and lapel conjunction with the tiny black hook and eye, the flap pockets which are probably not useable but I don’t care, the classic epaulets, even the oversize snaps which surely are magnetic for ease of use, interesting taper in the sleeves, a fabric which is perfectly suited for its use. My creative self wants the coat to have a smashing color print for the lining, but I don’t know if Burberry does that.

Oh, and Michelle is a lovely English Rose.

  • n a

Sure, she looks nice, but I feel like she’s the Lea Michelle of prim and proper. This phot just screamed: Of course!

  • Smart.  As the Brits say. “She looks ever so smart.”

  • shelley514

Gorgeous face and skin.  Nice coat!

  • The mismatched rolled up pant hems make the baby Jesus cry.

  • libraangel

All I can look at are those buttons

    • lizlemonglasses

I was like, “What do you mean?” … then I looked again, and can’t *unsee* them!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Those aren’t buttons, they’re giant snaps. And I wish she had snapped them up.

  • LittleKarnak

    Comb your hair!!!!

  • Looks like she’s done something jolly with her pants cuffs.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Lovely and smart outfit. But I guess she is to me what Marion Cotillard is to some others. I look at Marion and I am struck by her beauty, some  don’t feel that way, think of her as merely ‘pretty’ and don’t get what the  fuss’ is about. I genuinely don’t see striking in Michelle. What am I missing I  wonder? Are my eyes tainted with remains of the old franco-british mésentente?

  • Anniebet

I do like her clothing choices – love the bag and gloves. But, oh noes! Do I detect a hint of Nicole Kidmanesque forehead?

  • peachy

coat is top-freakin-notch. spectacular bag/gloves. great shoes. overall excellent look. get a wigmaster, honey, and fix that ‘do.

  • quiltrx

She looks pretty and very put together.

  • lrhoff

    She looks real….how refreshing!

  • Clean cut and fresh. I love that coat but could do without the hems on those pants.

  • carolie_king

She really looks so much like my mother at a young age, it’s eerie.  But mom never dressed this well.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

For such a casual look (and I know, it’s a Burberry event), she looks marvelous.  I love the coat and the bag!
