Michael Kors Fall 2013 Collection

Posted on February 18, 2013

With jolts of vivid color and streamlined shapes, Michael Kors offered his vision of the season: “Bright Lights, Fast City,” which he described as “urban athleticism meets uptown polish.” Kors is a master showman and a brilliant salesman, which means his runway shows are eye-popping, loud events and his collections are always highly cohesive and easy to grasp. He knows his customer AND his audience. Love the simple, almost-utilitarian qualities of the shapes paired with such bold and unforgettable colors and prints.

Watch and learn, sad little reality show moppets.  More “Runway,” less “Project.”

      • http://www.facebook.com/karen.whitecotton Karen Whitecotton

Haven’t seen the unconventional challenge yet, but can someone explain to me why those awful browns are so popular? Designs have been difficult to stomach except for the clear winners. The entries looked promising. Can’t blame Mondo and others on selection committee who selected this group. The team thing got to them.

    • afabulous50

      Love the men’s looks…the women’s – not so much.

    • JasmineAM

I just can’t with the camo. Everything else is lovely. I’m from Alabama, and camo totally reads as hick. LOVE the houndstooth, though.

      • Vickiefantastico

He lost me at the camo too. I’m from Kentucky, and yes, I immediately think redneck when I see it. Oddly enough, I don’t associate it with the military, isn’t that odd?

        • shopgirl716

I’m from TX and I see camo and think hunters.  I would never, every think Michael Kors.

        • SerpentsDance

Same here. I live actually fairly close to Ft. Knox and camo reads “hunter or redneck” to me before it reads “military”.

      • unpious

Yeah, the houndstooth is lovely. The High-Falutin’ Camo is still camo.

      • http://www.facebook.com/karen.whitecotton Karen Whitecotton

I thought that way at first, they begin to grow on you,

      • kryten8

I’m under the impression that fashion people are so out of the loop with normals that they think, “NOBODY wears camo any more, right? It’s OK to use ironically in a fashion show, but with prettier colors now?” It reads as hick to me, too. Although I guess maybe he could be trying to market coats to the military or deer hunters?

      • patitasdeplata

Camo?? Really?? On the runway?? I’m from San Diego and Mexico City where I hardly run into hunters. I associate it with the military.
So no. It is prohibited. No camo. It is simply a butt ugly print. And why intentionally make reference to hunters and to the army?  I do not take design or fashion advice from that sort. And neither should Kors.  Ick!!!

      • DesertDweller79

Camo, to me, alternates between military and redneck.  In either case, it is completely inappropriate on the runway. No, Michael Kors.  No.  But, I like the houndstooth a lot.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mary.nease Mary Nease

Seriously, I’m harassed by camo enough as it is here in NC. It needs to leave my safe space STAT.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The man does indeed know what he is doing.  He’s gonna sell the HELL out of this collection.  Lots of great pieces, most of which are easily adaptable to multiple uses.  Lots of great color. That yellow coat is a wow.
He’s never going to be on my list of innovative designers, but he knows his customer base, and plays perfectly to them.

    • PaulRin

The finale dress with Karlie Kloss is just not good.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

Are the skirts in the first row made of perforated leather? They are gorgeous, and a new proportion.

    • schadenfreudelicious

some of the pieces are lovely, but those final few dresses just remind me of Demi Moore’s bike shorts/mullet skirt Oscar getup disaster…

    • MilaXX

Last look, first row? GIMME! I really like a lot of these. I’m not crazy about the camouflage looks on the 3rd row, but very nice collection

    • SophiaPehawkins

ALWAYS say no to camo, especially furry camo.

The collection is alright. It looks his stuff, nice but not breathtaking.

    • Zippypie

I dislike the camouflage (it looks dated and done) and the skirt lengths are awkward, but that tweed pantsuit is fabulous.  I want.

      • Beardslee

That tweed pantsuit is my favorite.  Hate camouflage unless a soldier is wearing it.

    • DinaSews

I must be ahead of my time! See the yellow coat, 5th row on the right?  Made that coat for myself last year (with a houndstooth lining no less!).  Love, love, love the orange pieces.

    • kikisayshi

I can totally see Heidi in the black and silver dress 4th up from the bottom. Also LOVE the suit just below that. If only I was the size of a model.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

He is a bit Zipper happy, No?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

      black/blue dress – middle – 4th row.
Why make women look hippier? As bad as the Gucci FrankenPuffy Sleeves in previous posting.

    • Sarah Thomas

This is all tacky and awful.

    • shopgirl716

Camo?  My 8 year old has a closet full of camo as well as camo bedding.  Michael Kors, wtf?

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I love those clothes (maybe not so much on the camo) but I CAN’T with those sunglasses. They are entirely too Geordi La Forge for my taste.

    • ankali

I love the grey tweed pants-suit, and nothing else. The looser shapes are unflattering– the models all look like they’re wearing clothes that are 2 sizes too big. I don’t like the shiny black zippers/piping, the camo stuff is absurd, and the mullet dresses at the end are bad. I normally like Kors, but I think this was a swing and a miss.

I’m not great at looking at runway ensembles and visualizing how the individual pieces could be incorporated into a real person’s wardrobe, though.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I covet the giant houndstooth print jacket, and the gray low cut suit jacket.  Not crazy about the mullet skirts or the camo (though I do like the one long brown-toned camo coat), but it’s a sharp  looking collection, and he’s going to make serious money off of it.

      • carolynmo

Completely agree. I am not digging the urban camo. I’m a little surprised at that from Kors.

      • Chickadeep

Hate the camo & mullet dresses…but the tweed & houndstooth are good, & that cobalt/black combo is going to sell like crazy to the Gen X ladies (that color combo was my jam back in the day). Kors knows his audience & I agree, this collection’s a money maker.

    • gdougs

Couldn’t tell whether it was a man or a woman in some pictures… not my favorite collection.

    • Jangle57

It looks like early 60s utilitarian to me; so boxy with some of the pieces.  There’s a few pieces I like but mostly it’s kind of dowdy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

what the hell are those last 2/3 mini + manny dresses?

    • butterflysunita

Always love seeing color.  That shade of blue is one of my favorites.  But why has the mullet skirt not died yet?

    • Beth G

      Just not the camo…. please….

      • golden_valley

I wanted to like this a million times over, but technology won’t let me.  Oh Michael, how could you?

    • AuntieAnonny

      Loving the giant coats.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I like much of this, but I just can’t abide by camouflage and mullet hems.

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

The mullet dresses kind of make me twitch. As does the furled parachute attached to the dress of the girl in the middle of row four.

I like both the looks on either side of row ten, though.

    • joything

      Tweed pant suit — MINE.

    • lalahartma

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

The waffle texture skirts in the first row are yes. The rest is all a no. He took time off PR judging for this? I’d rather hear more about mother of the bride-X-disco clothing.

    • wawawah

LOUD n TACKY! That mens look looks like Vanilla Ice! As MK would say…where’s he or she going? No clue! Thank god he can rely on selling to the masses with his endless assortment of liscences…cause this is one ugly collection!

    • wawawah

And whats with the exsposed “zipper” detailng? Horrble and zero newness to any of the looks!

    • l_c_ann

Now your slim teenager can buy a Michael Kors coat and wear it when she’s fifty and 2x the weight she was as a teen.
Who’d a thunk he’d become a one size fits all kind of guy?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

      i can’t wait to go to Marshall’s.

    • conniemd

I like the collection, hounds tooth jacket great, should have done more hounds tooth, less camoflauge, but really did not like the mullet dresses and skirts. I wish that look would go away.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1124162729 Igor Buarque

I love a lot of the womenswear,  but the men’s looks reminded me in some sort of way the fashion of the early 90’s.

    • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

An orange trench? Well now we know what Kors was using to wipe off all his excess self tanner…

I joke, but j’adore almost everything, especially the orange tench.

    • susan6

The mullet dresses at the end look “chip, in a chip way”.  But the grey women’s outfits are great.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I love row 2 and row 10, but not a whole lot else.

    • alyce1213

There are a couple of nice pieces, but overall I don’t like.  The mullet dresses, especially the one with the leather boob holders (as well as the leather peplum above it), are downright repulsive to my eyes. Trend whore.

    • ccm800

Oh hell no. Hate the whole collection top to bottom

    • Tatiana Luján

Some of the looks are cool, some look very dated and some look plainly tacky.

    • editrixie

Bleh. There’s virtually nothing here I like. (And it’s weird that some of the dresses have mullet hems — I can hear him screeching “She’s pooping fabric!”)

    • Pants_are_a_must

The Duchess was feeling very Dior-y, wasn’t he.

    • spooki C

This crap looks cheap as hell and very dated. Gross camo snuggies, even grosser rubbery looking camo outfits and trash bag mullet skirts.

    • Monabel

    • kategs

Man, I am so over camo.  Even in those gorgeous cuts!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

LMAO. Those sunglasses look like the ones given to patients after they’ve undergone cataract surgery.

    • Stubenville

Camouflage in kookie color combinations was fun and new when Stephen Sprouse did it… in 1987.

      • kaycem

so glad i saw this before i started typing lol!  i agree and the blue/black/white combo already had a resurgence, as well — i remember guys wearing it when i was in high school 20-ish (OMG) years ago.

    • http://www.facebook.com/karen.whitecotton Karen Whitecotton

Love the blue and the idea of bright colours but not so in love with yellow and orange, I would’ve preferred a primary red and a purplish hue. Silhouettes r sleek and clean. Hubby will like the Cammo. I like all of the prints. Not sure if the colour-block will translate successfully down to petites. Would be nice if someone gave some thought to us for a change. Overall, Fun for Fall!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Two types of camo, tweed, and houndstooth and something that looks like thermal bag material; nothing much new here.

    • guest2visits

Elena!… with a bit of Dimitri at the end.  No?
Those giant peplums with trains attached must never leave the RW.
I do like the micro camo-print ensemble from top to bottom – 3rd look, 8th row.

    • http://twitter.com/JohnOCinJP John O’Connell

I think it’s great that Kors gave Anthony Ryan a job so quickly after All-Stars wrapped. It’s really grea… Oh. Kors designed this? My bad.

    • jack mackenna

I lurve the houndstooth jacket. Unfortunately some of the orange and yellow stuff reminds me of the safety jackets roadworkers wear.

    • YoungSally

Was the princess even involved in this collection?  It ranges from meh to ugh.  Sorry, Michael, I usually love your stuff.

    • boweryboy

Meh.  Upscale scuba safari  gear.  No thanks.

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

The houndstooth coat is FIERCE and  I love the blue dress in the second row. Bit eh on the camo and mullet dresses.

    • TSkot

      Mullett dresses and camouflage?  Yikes!

    • http://figgylicious.blogspot.com/ Figgy

      Goddamn mullet skirts.

    • http://twitter.com/msalistar Ms Alistar

Wow, step away from the camo and the safety orange.

    • BrooklynBomber

      mostly terrible.

    • quiltrx

Overall, I quite like it.  The fleece (or fleece-ish?) pieces look a little ‘crafty’ for me, but overall pretty good.  The left and right on third-from-the-bottom row are my favorites, and I love the black skirt on the first row and the cobalt/black houndstooth pieces.

    • mmc2315

I was very disappointed when I saw this collection.

    • Anniebet

I get the distinct impression that Mr. Kors likes men better than women. Why else design beautiful things for the guys and slightly hideous things for the gals. The dress on the right of the last column is barfable.

    • DeTrop

7th row – Coat, I love.  For the rest, this is the worst collection MK has done imo.  I’d love to hear Nina Garcia on this.

    • Indigo54

This is MK???  NO WAY?!  What the….?

    • yybb

4th row in the middle. What is that blue thing on skirt?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

This is the most fugly collection I’ve seen in a while.  What the HELL is he doing with such overdone motifs like CAMO for chrissakes?  And the black shiny duct tape placed on various parts of primary colored clothing.  It’s like the 80’s have come back, in a bad bad way.  I just hate hate hate it.  BOO.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Barbie and Ken join the Matrix? But I kind of love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/agatha.guilluame.7 Agatha Guilluame

Hate it. I absolutley and unabashedly dislike this collection. It reads Elmer Fudds visiting City Cousins.

    • libraangel

Um, I don’t know how this gentleman gets to be a judge on PR when all he designs are simple silhouettes and color blocking a   la Anthony Ryan. He must be a good salesman, cause I hate the whole thing and he would really have to have a great sales pitch to make me buy any of this.

    • PinkLemon

camo will never not look cheap.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

    • Cheryl Kohs

Meh.  But I love the butternut squash colored pea coat.

    • http://twitter.com/valrastetter Valerie Rastetter

Everything looks super cheap. Not his best.

    • kaywyoming
