Mia Wasikowska in Proenza Schouler

Posted on February 22, 2013

Well, here’s a quirky way to start your day:

Mia Wasikowska attends the ‘Stoker’ press conference in Seoul, South Korea in a Proenza Schouler dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Wylie Hays

We want to like this – and we think we mostly do like this – but some of the choices bug. The dress is really cute. We’re not a hundred percent on the shape of the skirt and the stiffness of it, but the colors are great. It’s the legs and the hair, kittens. We can’t get behind either of them. It’s not that we think she should have gone without coverage while wearing a mini, but these tights looks so opaque and thick. Didn’t Cathy Cambridge make it okay for young ladies to wear sheer hose again? No? Well, WE’RE making it okay. Mia, consider a nice pair of L’Eggs next time.

Also, the Romulan hair. We just can’t with that.

Why does she have my pre-school hair? It makes her look like a toddler.

    • joancarol

      Pre-school hair!   Hahaha! Perfect!

    • MilaXX

OMG She looks like Sally from the preschool readers we had back in the dark ages when I was a kid.

    • Call me Bee

Yeah–that was my hairstyle too, from age 3 till about 10 or 11….

    • SerpentsDance

the hair reminds me of Amy Mitchell in EastEnders. Same cut and color.

    • Whenever TLo make Star Trek references like that (Romulan hair), I love them a little more.

    • kimmeister

It reminds me of that picture of a cat with a helmet made out of a grapefruit. The dress is darling though.

    • Lisa_Cop

I hate the bangs the most. Her hair worked (it was longer though) when she played a teen on HBO’s In Treatment but she’s grown up alot since then. Time for a new do.

  • Annabelle Archer

I can’t take hair trauma like that before I’ve had my coffee.

    Her dress is fine. Whatever.

    Who has my coffee?

    • mshesterp

I hate that hair SO VERY MUCH.  Hate it so much!  The dress is cute–but I’m with TLo on the tights.  Too much.

      • 3boysful

Although she likely paid a pretty penny for those bangs, they scream DIY to me.

        • Do they not slant toward the right side of her forehead? That’s not very professional – unless it was on purpose, but as the PR judges would say, not slanty enough to look on purpose, so just sloppy.

          • Lori

Yes, they’re crocked and it’s driving me nuts.

          • Ha! OCD bang haters unite!

          • Lori

Yup, this is one of the reasons I generally have a hate on for bangs. If they’re not perfectly straight, or at least perfectly level with the person’s brow line they make me all twitchy. Mia’s are bad.

          • I have curly hair, so when I’ve had bangs, they just fluff about and I don’t have to worry if they’re even, but I am also picky about WHERE the bangs lie on the forehead. Mia’s are too short looking to me, hence the childish effect.

    • Alyssa

I’m about to go get some chai, want me to get you a cup of coffee?

      • Annabelle Archer

Aren’t you the sweetest?  Yes, please. With Baileys. It’s raining and cold in ATL today, I need all the warming I can get.

        • Alyssa

Sure thing! It’s cold and dreary here in Tulsa as well, so I think I’ll join you! I wonder if Baileys would be good in chai…

  • capybara_cafe

I love the fabric, but I can’t tell if she really HAS no boobs, or it the dress is smashing them completely flat. I also agree about the tights, I can’t stand an opaque tight with a fancy dress, it just looks all wrong to me.
Whoever gave her that hair cut needs a good smack as well.

  • The bangs look like they shrunk in the wash–it was kind of her to work on a solution to the Booms Problem, but this ain’t it.

  • lehen

i love this in a futuristic fem-bot kind of way

  • The blunt cut hair is so unflattering for her.  But I really love the dress.  The tights?  Meh. Either a colored tight, or sheer hose, but not the black.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

I like her version of the dress; I love the original. Haiku!
      Twirly blue and green
      Vulcan hair not logical
      Skate Trekkie Barbie

      •  Ah Vlasta, you never disappoint!

      • gabbilevy

The model’s version is infinitely better, but your haiku beats them all.

        • Vlasta Bubinka

          I do what I can.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

And we here at Bitter Kittens Central appreciate you!

      • Call me Bee

    •  The black tights into black shoes make her legs look like tree-trunks, which is an unfortunate illusion. Love the dress.

  • Jennifer Coleman

In fact, the whole outfit borrows A LOT from the Trekkies.  I swear she’s almost giving the Live Long and Prosper salute in the 4th photo.

  • Introspective

Her hair is such a mistake. She went from ethereal pre raphaelite beauty to a femme bot with a bowl cut.

Cant even bother with the rest because shell always be an out until she gets a new hairdo.

  • I love the dress, but have to agree, the tights were not the right choice. Her hair needs to be much softer.

  • lobsterlen

Not bad but I love the cut of the original. However I hate this ice skater tap dancer type skirts on anyone but ice skaters and tap dancers.

  • Ceur

LOVE the print of the dress. My favourite colours. But the hair and the full skirt needs to go.

  • SRQkitten

The hair has the feel of a “do-it-yourself” number that one of my preschoolers gave to her sister. In other words, extremely not flattering. Honey, you’re an actor in major release movies, you CAN afford to get a great hair stylist to do something attractive with your hair.

  • I hate the hipster bangs, but I love everything else, including the dark tights- it’s JUST short enough and full enough that the tights keep it out of gyno territory.

  • MoHub

Can we really call this the same dress as the runway garment? Other than the fabric, I’m seeing two totally different dresses from the neckline to the hem.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Now appearing with Ice Capades: Ensign Ro!

  • afabulous50

I have no idea who this is…God I’m old.

  • Oh my, ‘Romulan hair’, I love that. And honestly, I like her hair.I like the whole look. I mean, you’re right, she DOES look like a Star Trek character, but I find that fun and refreshing.

  • ecksor

Small chest and flabby, toneless arms are not a good combo. Any dress accentuating that will look unflattering.

    • alice20c

Flabby?! God, I hate the world.

  • MilaXX

This mostly works for me. I would have preferred hosiery over tights, but it’s the hair and makeup I dislike the most. Fix that and I can give the tights a pass even though they are Zooey levels of twee.

  • I blame Zoe Deschanel.

  • I can’t hate this. She looks just like my sister, unfortunate bangs and all.

  • alice20c

I actually like the whole thing, hair, dress, tights. It’s heavily stylized and does feel a bit alien. But I like alien. There’s only so many permutations of pretty that I can stomach, especially when it all seems so effing bland. Everyone’s so *appropriate*. It’s nausiating. So, hail the Romulan Princess!

    •  Call us the outsiders, alice, but I’m with  you.  I really like how distinctive she looks.  A nice break from the predictable starlets uniform. If I had to make one complaint, it would be the tights. If she had on sheer black hosiery I think she’d look a little better.  But I honestly can’t fault this at all.

      • alice20c

Yeah, I can see how sheer tights/hose would work better.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t mind the thick hose when they’re deployed with booties. But suede pumps and thick hose is like a Minnie Mouse costume.
    The hair is terrible.

  • Dot

I think she looks adorable. Great colors on her. I also like the tights — they are super opaque, but I think they work fine here. The hair doesn’t bother me. I find her look refreshing in a sea of cocker spaniel and yoga hair. She looks futuristic and fun!

  • I am going to find the photo I have of myself in 4th grade with that exact haircut, and I gotta say, it didn’t look so good on a 4th grader, either.  Seriously, what is it with the baby bangs on grownup women?  Totally agree about the disastrous thick tights!  For a harrowing moment I thought she was wearing leggings, but it was even worse, because the way the shoes–Louboutin shoes, no less, what a waste–blend right into the tights, it ends up looking like she put on a pair of footie pajama bottoms with that gorgeous dress.  Balances the baby hairdo, I guess.

The neckline on Mia’s dress IS a lot nicer than the dickey look worn by the model, but it’s small comfort in this case.

  • alyce1213

Yeah, black semi-opaques would have done it, maybe even a deep color from the dress.
It’s a fun, unusual dress and she has enough cute to pull it off. Except for that hair . . .

  • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t like the alterations to the dress, but the material is so cool I can handle them.

But that hair!  It really does put the whole thing in cosplay territory.

  • nannypoo

Her hair is just appalling. It’s so distracting that I can’t even see her clothes. When I was a little kid my mother used to cut my hair like that, right in our kitchen, and I looked nearly as idiotic as she does.

  • decormaven

Wish they’d stuck with the original design and fabric choice; love them, but this… not so much. The hairdo reminds me of those plastic preformed wigs in the Sears Wish Book.

  • minnye

Whenever I trim my own bangs, my hairdresser asks me “you’re right handed, aren’t you?” and then he proceeds to even them out.

But ooooh, that fabric! If the dress were a few inches above the knee, with kickass booties (and yeah, straight bangs) I would be on board with the whole look.

    • SRQkitten

I had a hair guy years ago who insisted I could trim my own bangs as needed (I was traveling a lot at the time and it was hard to get in for a cut at times). I told him that while there were certain things I was happy to do for myself, cutting hair was definitely one of those items that required a professional, in my book. Mia’s look really confirms it this. I don’t know which is worse, thinking she cut it herself or that she PAID someone to make her hair look so wretched

  • Judy_J

I much prefer the original runway design.  If she had to wear the tights, they would have gone better with the original.  And that Dutch Boy paint hair….pulleeeze!!!

  • Alyssa

I like the dress & tights, but hate the hair.

  • zelavie

I love, love, love this!  Her hair is meh, but the outfit is super cute.  I’d wear it exactly as-is.

  • t b

It appears the woman who cut my hair yesterday flew to Mia’s side and did a wack job on her too! She gets around. I’m mortified, but I don’t have the confidence Mia must have. I just sit with my head in a hat or bucket hoping it will G R O W…sigh

    • charlotte

       Poor you!

    • mhleta

Honey, the best thing to do with a bad haircut is to own it and wear it proudly to the degree that it looks like this was EXACTLY the haircut you were going for. I maintain that many a trend began this way.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    a 4.5 from the Russian judge…..

  • tallgirl1204

I love the dress on the model, with the straighter skirt.  On her, with the tights, it becomes ice-skater-y.  Also, isn’t it weird to be posing before a picture of (I think) Nicole Kidman?

  • ballerinawithagun

I have the perfect pair of Wolford geometric patterned pantyhose for her! Love the dress, great color and print.

    • mhleta

I’d never heard of Wolford and just looked at their web site. Sexy stuff! And yes, I bet one could find the perfect hose to go with that dress.

      • ballerinawithagun

They are worth every penny! I have some that are 12 years old. I have 2 cats and they can’t even destroy them. Incredible design and technology.

  • Trisha26

I love black tights with black shoes, booties, etc. – but I hate that effect combined with a sleeveless dress. It’s like UGG boots with shorts.

  • And the Romulan bangs are crooked.

  • ojosazules

I like it all. The hair and the dress are good together.

  • afabulous50

Why are my comments being deleted???  All I said was that I don’t know who she is…
This is the second time that I’ve been deleted in a thread…something I said??

  • tired_mommy

Love the dress. The opaque tights always make me think someone didn’t have time to shave their legs.  Obviously the hair too is severe.

Is that Nicole Kidman on the background art?

  • I think the black opaque tights are perfect given the length of the skirt.  Think the whole look is aces.

  • crash1212

I love the tights with it. They give it an edge to my eye. HATE the hair though…WTF? Who gets their hair cut like that? Love the dress and think the version she’s wearing is a thousand percent more interesting than what the model has on.

  • greyhoundgirl

But she needs the tights to stay warm on the ice!

  • I love it, and think it’s totally wearable for a wide range of occasions and lots of personality types. I can imagine several hosiery options, each of which would alter the overall look. But I really like the black opaque and appreciate the suede for giving a contrasting texture at least.
I also think she was smart to go minimal on the makeup and accessories, though i think some color on her eyes and a few delicate pieces of jewelry would have helped add just a touch of sparkle and light. Maybe also a cocktail ring with a brightly colored stone.

  • Lilak

I like the opaque tights idea — just wish these weren’t quite so thermal-looking.  Love the dress, which reminds me of the way, when you order a cone at some ice cream parlors in Japan, they practically gift wrap it.

  • Judy_S

She has a kind of schoolgirl-anime silhouette with the hair. It does not look great but it might look worse with a different dress.

  • mhleta

Given the location, I think this is perfect. It’s got that futuristic Harajuku vibe going on that probably plays very well in South Korea.

  • gsk241

I want to see this dress (maybe a less low-cut version and sans leggings) on Quvenzhané Wallis!

  • anne.landre

I happen to like her clean, unpretentious looks.  Everything about her is just a wee bit off, and it works for my mind.  But the heavy dark hose worn with dress and heels?  Stop it.

  • Snailstsichr

Ah Mia – if we hate the tights on Zooey, why do you think we will like them on you?

  • That haircut always reminds me of Maud, Julienne Moore’s character in The Big Lebowski.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m good with her stem to stern on this one. You go, Miss Mia.

  • LOL Her bangs are crooked!

  • wow, hate this tip to toe. she looks like a drawing from a childrens book.

  • msdamselfly

Like the overall look but the neckline is kind of unflattering

  • mjude

    romulan hair!  LOL

  • New rule.  No tights with a sleeveless dress. It looks ridiculous.

  • padma sallah

Would it kill to put on some eyeliner? Everything above the neck is blergh.

  • Marian Humin

    I love it all.

  • leftcoastpickle

I defend the opaque hose. But I agree about the romulan hair, and laugh heartily at the reference. HAHAHA.

  • i really like the whole thing. i think it suits her and what seems to be her style.

  • TLo, do you two have a name for that kind of bangs? I can’t figure out if Jessica Biel’s booms are more distracting or if these…?…are worse.

    •  Whimpers?

I think those bangs are awful enough to be the way the world ends.

  • m0r0

Hate the length. It’s much better on the model.

  • SophieCollier

That is the haircut of a two year old.  No idea why it’s on her head.

  • Sara__B

Her hair looks like she cut it herself with Kindergarten scissors, and her dress has the same silhouette as my cheerleading costume from 1967. Neither of these are good things.

  • butterflysunita

I just love the original dress.  Beautiful colors.

  • afabulous50

Who is deleting my comments…and why?

  • Erin Hayes

I have to disagree. I think this is the cutest.

  • ikillplants

Speaking of Cathy Cambridge, any analysis on her latest sweet wrap-dress?  Or too boring to do a post?

  • Somebody has failed Rooney Mara robo-actress school, but she still looks cute! Whatever this movie is about, my interest is peaked.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

now i’m sure buffalo bill went into fashion, because that is not a wig, that is uma thurman’s scalp.

  • it’s not bad, but i much prefer the original lines of the dress — especially around the neck.  it would have balanced out those tights, too.

  • Tracy_Flick

    Pure Prince Valiant.

  • MzzPants

I LOVE this.  It’s dramatic and futuristic.  The fit is impeccable.  The dress length and leg opacity almost make it look like leggings with a tunic.  Sheer hose would have given it a softer, feminine feel that would have been a disservice to the look.

  • Anniebet

Such an unusual look. Love it (mostly) from the neck down. The tights do look ready for a Russian winter. Maybe a black belt?

Hate the hair & face. Is she deliberately thumbing her nose at the whole Hollywood glamour thing? Or does she actually think she looks good?

  • Zippypie

Love the dress.  BOOTS.  This would look killer with a great pair of knee high kick ass boots.  This opaque tights with pumps look is just tragic.

Speaking of tragic, that haircut.  It looks cute on a 5 year-old.  Maybe.

  • libraangel

When did Tinkerbelle start wearing black tights? (Hate the original runway more)

  • libraangel

p.s. Hate the hair too. AARRGH! Remember how beautiful she looked in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with her long locks? Sigh

  • Her hair and the tights are my favorite parts about this.

  • My brain says no to the hair but I think she looks really cute with it. SO CONFLICTED

  • NYCGlamourpuss

You know, I love this on the model a lot more.  It’s been too reworked for Miss Mia, and the black tights with the flared skirt take it straight into Zooey D. territory.

  • quiltrx

This dress is SO cute!  I think the fabric really makes it–and I think it would be a lot more boring without the ‘body’ to the skirt.  But yes, sheer black hose please.

And I just can’t with her hair.  Again, please say it’s for a role.

  • kathrineb

I will admit the fringe is not cut properly or straight enough but why are people so down on this kind of haircut? Does every star have to have that generic long hair?
I think she looks really cute and I love the dress on her, especially the pleats.

  • pookiesmom

It’s like she’s trying to do a blonde Rooney Mara thing with that hair, and it’s really not working. Mia’s gorgeous but more in a classic Victorian way, and less in a severe futuristic way.

  • Sara LaBatt

I honestly thought she was giving the “live long and prosper” for a second.  When my daughter’s hair gets too long it looks like this.  We call it the Prince Valiant.

  • barbbruchdesign

    I love the hair!

  • I tend to feel like I lack imagination when I say this, but seriously: what was wrong with the runway version? I loved everything about that look, and all the changes were NOT an improvement.

  • guest2visits

Romulan hair! It is.  She needs something other than a 5yr old’s haircut.  Or this dress. I like the model’s tons more – and it looks
like a completely different dress. I think it wold be even better without the turtle neck (after all, it’s sleeveless anyway) but it’s so
much better than the twee-ish version Mia is wearing.

  • No way! She looks fantastic, she looks happy & comfortable with herself, and I reckon the grey tights make her look smooth. Plus you can tell from the second last pic they’re opaque.
