Megan Hilty Shooting “Smash” in New York City

Posted on February 05, 2013

Darlings, here are pictures of Megan Hilty, looking like a car show model, in NYC, shooting scenes for the second season of Smash.

Megan Hilty films a scene with a car on the set of ‘Smash’ in New York City.

Cute dress.

Now, with fashion commentary aside, let’s discuss Smash. Anyone catch the first-hour OnDemand preview of the premiere yet? The full two hours air tonight. We saw it, and for all the talk of how the show’s been re-tooled, it just feels like cast-shuffling and lots of big-name guest stars layered over the same show. We’ll watch, of course, but we remain unconvinced that the show has undergone the restructuring it needed after last season. We’ll see. Will you?

I will watch, but will probably only “stick” if Megan Hilty is returned to some kind of sane contender for the lead– or otherwise returns to prominence.  Can’t stand the pre-fab pretty other one (can’t even remember her name).

    •  I can’t stand Megan Hilty for some reason. Katherine McPhee (the other one) doesn’t bother me. Regardless, I doubt I’ll be tuning in.

  • kschwarting

I saw the first hour on Hulu a couple of weeks ago, and the only exciting thing about it was the fabulous song Jeremy Jordan sang at the end.  I fear Megan Hilty will continue to be shoved aside in favor of McPhee.

  • I don’t know what Smash is but I know she looks silly.

  • Sobaika

There’s not a chance in hell I will watch this season, revamp or no. But she looks really cute.

  • EveEve

Nope.  But I want her shoes!

    •  I had a pair of shoes in that metallic cherry patent when I was 4 and I have never recovered from growing out of them. Every pair of red shoes I buy is a failed attempt at replacing them.

      • formerlyAnon

There IS something powerful about those shoes. I keep looking back at them, though the odds of me wearing a heel like that are exactly zero, even if they were a gift.

  • GorgeousThings

I’ll watch of course, despite that wretched getup they put her in. The dress is cute enough, but the heavy flesh toned tights and cheap looking pumps… Well, hopefully they will look better on camera than in stills.

I hope it gets better as a show. It had such promise, but like Glee, fizzled.

My guilty pleasure recently was watching “Pitch Perfect”. THAT was fun! Maybe these musicals just can’t sustain more than 2 hours worth.

    • MilaXX

       Loved Pitch Perfect.

      • fursa_saida

        Me too!

    • AR16

I’m thinking the tights are because it’s been freezing in NYC right now.  She looks pretty cold when she’s wearing the coat; without it, she’s probably miserable.

I want to watch but I missed the last episode of last season and I don’t know if I can sit through two hours tonight.  We’ll see.  Hilty is definitely one of the bright spots of this show, though.

      • lovelyivy

I’ve been trying to get through season 1 eps on Hulu. It’s been real hard to watch all of them all the way through- which does not bode well for me continuing to watch the show.

  • Annabelle Archer

Nope, I bailed on Smash mid season.  It was just not…good.  Megan here, is cute as a button, but those are giving me Wizard of Oz eye twitches.

    • Violina23

To me, she’ll always be Galinda. With a Guh 🙂

  • charlotte

Your reviews kept me from watching it in the first place, and I’m pretty sure it will stay that way.

  • Hetha Innis

Nope, but I LOVE that dress!

  • Allyson Wells

Nope. Too many other good shows on right now (or coming back soon). Smash had its chance with me!

  • MilaXX

I caught the the On Demand ep. Still the same show, just with a cast reshuffle. The best and worst thing is JHUD. Great because I like her character and singing, bad because she completely blows McPhee out of the water and they are supposed to be equals. This show remains hate watching for me.

  • ellabob

Will give it a try but doubt that I can stick it out…

  • janiemary

Love her coat…  the dress is cute too but looks like it belongs on ‘Mad Men’.  Have never watched ‘Smash’ so probably won’t start now!

  • Alanna Wisteria

Daaaaang. As I said last season, she and Bailey Buntain (the blonde on Bunheads) are dead ringers for each other.  And both of them are adorable.

  • hughman

There’s a lot going on (in the preview of Smash, not so much here).

  • another_laura

I adore those red shoes and I do believe she is wearing ivory hose which is also perfect for this and also life-affirming, for me.

  • Cute dress, but it looks like an Easter dress, not a New York in February dress.

  • Imasewsure

Like the dress but not on her. Dig the ruby slippers

  • Violina23

I have a broadway fetish, so I’ll be watching, cautiously optimistic.  I didn’t see the first hour yet, so I’ll just take it in and see what happens. If they can make it more about show biz and less about soap-opera-ish relationships, it might become a watchable show again

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Well, if “Smash” gets cancelled Megan Hilty can always become an achorwoman for Fox News.

    • tallgirl1204

Help me.  I don’t get this joke at all.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

If you’ve ever watched Fox News, most of the women achors are blond, have the same hairstyle, wardrobe, etc.  It’s really kind of weird how many of them there are — kind of like Stepford wives. I refer to them as “The Fox Blondes”.

  • jonnyf8

It’s like the real Broadway.  Something stinks and they say they’ve retooled it and it still sucks.  We’re getting a lot of shows in workshop here in Seattle and the ones that are bad are just as bad when they get to Broadway.  You read the reviews and it sounds like they really didn’t change a thing.  I’m recording to see the JHud numbers and maybe Megan but will fast forward through the rest.  I cannot stand Nanny McPhee.

  • SusiePamudji

I will definitely see. She looks cute!

  • Janet B

    Love her coat.
Unlikely I’ll watch. I watched/dvr’d last year, but I gave up near the end.

  • Lilithcat

I stopped watching somewhere around the middle of the first season.  McPhee as Marilyn turned my stomach.  And the writing and plot lines got ridiculous.  I doubt I’ll try again.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I couldn’t get beyond the previews for the first season of “Smash”. Hilty was so obviously right for the role, that the very idea of McPhee somehow besting her just put me off the show.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Could not  care less about the show – only watched it a few times before boredom got to me.  However, I COVET the entire ensemble Ms. Hilty is wearing – coat, shoes, dress, all GORGEOUS.  Local NW girl makes it big – such a cutie!

  • Amazing how crummy the show was (I watched 1 1/2 episodes in the 1st season), considering: Angelica and Debra Messing – but I really disliked everything about McPhee from the start and the only

  • Amazing how crummy the show was (I watched 1 1/2 episodes in the 1st season), considering: Angelica and Debra Messing were in the cast. I really disliked everything about McPhee from the start and the only cast member I did like was Hilty.  McPhee does not seem sexy (a la Marilyn, that is) to me AT ALL.

  • I loved Megan Hilty on SMASH, but hated how her character was pushed aside when she was obviously the better (and more talented) character to play Marilyn!  I’m looking forward to S2, but I  hope it will be at least as good as it was in the first 1/2 of it’s 1st season.

  • crash1212

I want that dress…NOW. As for Smash – I plan to watch but will be giving it a short leash.

  • suzq

    Is her waist that high?
I’m sorry.  I’m finding that high waist very distracting.

  • And back to fashion commentary, I love those light cream tights! So fresh and ladylike!

  • nannypoo

    I won’t.

  • 4JJ

I’ve never seen Megan Hilty look so pretty – the dress is fabulous on her.

As for the show, yep, we’ll watch tonight and hope for the best for future weeks. We don’t expect the best necessarily, but we’re hoping for it.

  • That dress looks like one Lands’ End had last summer.  Just sayin’.  Also, GAAAAAAAA – tights, shoes, URG.

  • YoungSally

The NY Times was not kind to the show today….spoiler alert — Ellis may be gone (I haven’t watched the preview)…and there is a lot of shuffling.  Maybe it will find itself in the second season.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I saw the first hour.  Happy to see Christian Borle again.  Anjelica’s face seems to have settled in.  Both Megan Hilty and J. Hudson are better actors and singers than McPhee.  Hilty should be the star of the show.  McPhee can stay if she’s quiet and stays with the chorus with no additional storyline.  I’ll watch the second hour.

  • Trisha26

That dress looks like one I had in Jr. High – complete with sheer white tights and metallic pumps. I did not have those heels though!

I lasted through the first season long enough to see Meryl Streep’s daughter, Grace Gummer, play Angelica Huston’s daughter. That cameo was more exciting to me than anything I’d seen all season. There isn’t one character worth caring about and I haven’t missed it since.

  • I am a weak kitten — still watching “Smash.” The inside stuff (some of which is believable), snark, and some decent performances outweigh the show’s shortcomings for me.

Poor Megan looks spunky and nearly frozen. Maybe all that red is warming her up a little inside.

  • libraangel

Looks cute, but I imagine all the clothes are from the show, so can’t really judge them, can I?

  • neofashionista

I figured you would be happy with the retooled show TLO becuase they got rid of your two least favorite characters Ellis and the snively son
    Oh well
I recommend reading the article that the fug girls posted on their site about smash last friday it was very illuminating

  • Having just seen it: New Love Interest skeeves me OUT. Ew. He’s not even a Love Interest. He’s a Lust Interest. At least when Derek lusts after a lady, Jack Davenport makes it look good.

    • GenXcellent

NLI is so angry.  So very angry. But why? Why is he so angry?  I just don’t understand.

She looks cute enough here, I’m not entirely convinced that is her best hair cut or color.  It seems to be overwhelming her very pretty face.  SMASH?  I watched a couple episodes last season and was bored to tears, mostly by Ma. McPhees incredible lack of acting skills and personality.  I did watch about 30 minutes last night simply because I love me some Junnifer Hudson.  She was great n her first number and then I was bored..

  • formerlyAnon

I like that dress a lot. Very flattering. But I’m strangely drawn to the shoes.

I don’t watch, can’t afford the time to follow any more t.v. shows and not willing to give up something on the current rotation.

  • ashtangajunkie

I gave up on Smash after the first two episodes, which was disappointing to me because I love the Huston/Messing combo. There are too many other good shows to choose from. Love the red coat though.

  • I’ll watch it on Hulu and fast forward through the embarrassing bits, but Smash is just so sad.  Megan Hilty is so wonderful – sings, dances, great comic timing, has stage presence and makes every actor on the show she plays against a better actor.  Even the ever dormant and dull McPhee gets a pulse when they have a scene together. Why can’t we just have the show be about her and Christian Borle?  It would be like SATC only with the theatre crowd.

Dress is cute but she looks a bit washed out.

  • Molly

Please blog Smash! I don’t know what to think of it without TLo guidance! For instance, what to think of the young songwriter who doesn’t want to share his songs? Is that normal? Why else do you live in NYC and write songs? To hoard them? And what about the bar number with the director? Gratuitous or provocative? Is Frank gone for good? Is that too much to hope for?
These are things I turn to you for.

    • ItsDawn

YES!  I agree, I hope TLO blogs Smash.  I enjoyed it last night, but I was confused about the songwriter too–what’s with his attitude?  I think Frank is gone for good, and not a moment too soon.  I laughed at the little jokes, like when Angelica Houston threatened to throw a drink in her ex’s face again, and the Debra Messing scarf joke.  I thought Katherine McPhee did a much better job acting.

  • EliseC

I watched and I am DEFINITELY tuning in.  I know it needs some work, but I love this show.

  • Is Jack Davenport still there? I’d only keep watching if he is. Maybe.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I watched it. Same as last season. Pretending Katharine McPhee is something more than a limp noodle. Yeah, no. Megan Hilty is cute as a button, though. So we’re supposed to think she has to be a model at the car show because she simply isn’t as sparky as AWESOME McPHEE. (Because our eyes and ears don’t work. Sure, Smash. Whatever.)

  • Megan is a Broadway star of the first magnitude. Look at the Youtubes of the Glendas from Wicked. She was the best by far. The show needs more singing and dancing and less nonsense with the husbands. Phuleeeeze. Miss McPhee is very pretty and has learned a thing or two in the past five years, but she is an obvious lightweight when Jen Hudson and Megan Hilty are in the room.

  • Anniebet

The shoes…the shoes…they are calling, calling me. Can you hear them? No? Good, ’cause they’re mine! To go with the dress, which is also mine.

    *Anniebet slaps herself

  • Alyssa

Eh, I gave up on this show halfway through last season. Bummer, because I really wanted to like it!
