The last couple of times we’ve
raked Lena over the coals dinged Lena for dressing badly, we got a little bit of blowback to the effect of, “But don’t you see? She’s challenging gender norms and our culture’s beauty obsession! She’s laughing at the absurdity of it all!” Sorry, but we don’t buy it. You don’t borrow thousand-dollar dresses and strap on five hundred dollar shoes because you’re challenging beauty norms. Lena Dunham is interesting in many ways, but that doesn’t make her every move some piece of performance art. Sometimes a bad dresser is just a bad dresser.
And sometimes, she actually manages to get it right:

Attagirl. She looks great. And since this is all pretty much how she prefers to dress (simple and strapless), only better, we’re more convinced than ever that she wasn’t “making a statement” with her earlier outfits. She just hadn’t figured out how to dress herself for the cameras. This isn’t perfect, but we’d be fools to hold our breath waiting for Lena to hit the red carpet looking flawless. It’s good for her. It’s a polished look, it fits her, and it photographs well. Hair and makeup are presentably cute. Keep it up, girl.
