Lena Dunham in Reed Krakoff

Posted on February 18, 2013

The last couple of times we’ve raked Lena over the coals dinged Lena for dressing badly, we got a little bit of blowback to the effect of, “But don’t you see? She’s challenging gender norms and our culture’s beauty obsession! She’s laughing at the absurdity of it all!” Sorry, but we don’t buy it. You don’t borrow thousand-dollar dresses and strap on five hundred dollar shoes because you’re challenging beauty norms. Lena Dunham is interesting in many ways, but that doesn’t make her every move some piece of performance art. Sometimes a bad dresser is just a bad dresser.

And sometimes, she actually manages to get it right:

Attagirl. She looks great. And since this is all pretty much how she prefers to dress (simple and strapless), only better, we’re more convinced than ever that she wasn’t “making a statement” with her earlier outfits. She just hadn’t figured out how to dress herself for the cameras. This isn’t perfect, but we’d be fools to hold our breath waiting for Lena to hit the red carpet looking flawless. It’s good for her. It’s a polished look, it fits her, and it photographs well.  Hair and makeup are presentably cute. Keep it up, girl.

    I don’t know. All I see is a bathtowel.

    • butter nut

same here.  i think she looks great. this is certainly better than usual.  i love everything.  but that dress is just a piece of fabric pinned around her.  she deserves better.

      •  strapless dresses really aren’t her friend.

    • twocee

Here here.  Not even a sequined bathtowel at that.

    •  And really bad posture.

      • mom2ab

The bad posture (and upper arms pinned to her torso) is her discomfort with trying to keep the strapless top up.  What is the point anyway?

        •  I feel like she has bad posture regardless of what she is wearing. It’s ridiculous.

        • Cautiously Pessimistic

Strapless tops are dead simple to make and hellacious to fit, especially if you’ve graduated from training bras.  I think they’re usually lazy design (hence all the bath towel comments here), but in this case, the dress would have benefited immensely if they’d left that bit of black trim that you see on the modeled version.  It’s actually a cute dress with a nice shape, unlike the usual entries in the short-and-strapless category, but the top just doesn’t fit.

Her posture is just making matters worse.

    • 3boysful

Late to the party, but this is the old towel that you use to wipe up the spilled motor oil in the garage.

  • jonnyf8

    oh c’mon give her a lower-case werq.

  • Sobaika

I… don’t think this is good. At all. But this is a marked improvement from the time she wore no pants so, progress?

    • Andrew Schroeder

Yeah, I think this looks not great.

    • SassieCassy

yeah i am still trying to reconcile her looking like actual shit and STILL being a step up

    • sojourneryouth

Yep. Girl needs some sleeves and some tailoring.  Unstructured clothes like these just make her look dowdy.  Also, I have been OVER HERRR for some time now as a writer and celebrity personality.  Wake me when Tina Fey’s daughter Alice joins the Screen Writer’s Guild. If her 30 Rock appearance is anything to go by, Miss Alice Zenobia is a natural!

  • Bathmat, honestly.

  • karenbttc

So you don’t think she looks like literal roadkill?

  • A. W.

i used to defend her, but I’ve grown to find her really insufferable. Her makeup is an improvement in this look for sure, but a stylist needs to explain to her why strapless is such a horrible choice. She looks like a geeky 13 year old going to a bat mitzvah party… the only thing missing is a tiny black purse and matchy shawl.

    • missnutkin

yep – i really don’t get her thing with strapless

      • shnaggi

Allow me to postulate on that…Its all about the body art…..she is always shoulder hunched forward in order to show the tatoo… ergo terrible posture and the endless parade of strapless bath mats, pillow cases or sheeting.

        • Rrroza

Yes. If she insists on showing off the tat why not something sleeveless rather than strapless? And if it’s about her (lovely) skin, how bout some color and jewelry to set if off?

        • zuzu

That’s a shame, because she’s really got terrible ink.

        • Laylalola

I suspect it’s a combination of wanting to show of the tattoos and the boobs. She has this thing, not just on her show but in interviews, with her boobs.

          • rajf

Oh god. Then go with a halter dress. It wouldn’t be any worse, could be better, and would show the arm and back tats and boobs, with the added bonus of looking like an actual dress instead of a bathmat/rug/blanket/whateveranyoneelsehascalledit wrapped around a shivering lump of flesh.

          • Aurumgirl

I can think of about 15 different necklines, then, that would show off a boob in a much more attractive way than any kind of bandeau look.  It’s like using a sieve as a water container:  that particular tool will never do the job as well as any vessel, no matter how much delusion you apply.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I don’t understand it either.  She might like strapless dresses, but I’m not seeing this as all that flattering.  It is better than pantless, though.

    • conniemd

Exactly. Makeup and hair are improvements, but the bathtowel absolutely describes the dress. Just loos thrown on.

  • Paola Quintero

I love TLO logic! I’m addicted to you guys! 😛

  • Can’t see anything other than her shitty posture, but she’s not alone in that at all and this is definitely an improvement over just showing up in no pants.

  • aeb1986

The best  part about this is that she looks like she is comfortable in what she is wearing and having fun with it. Definitely a personal best.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Much improved. Wish she went with the booties, though.

  • TAGinMO

I do think she would have looked better with the black strip at the top of the bustline, as in the model’s look. But yeah, pretty much a personal best here.

  • Zippypie

I wish she’d stop with the strapless.  She still looks like she’s wrapped in a towel.  This is a better fitting towel, but it’s still a towel.

  • Doesn’t anyone else just want to tackle her down and force her into something that covers her flatteringly…. like a nice suit?!? sometimes it’s nice to let something besides your tattoos shine don’t cha think?

  • RebeccaKW

Well, I don’t really agree that she looks great, but she does look better than she has been.  The fit on the dress is better, the shape is better.  I like the hair and makeup here.  But I don’t think strapless is her look.  The hunched over shoulders are not helping with that, either.  But it is an improvement over previous things she’s worn.

    • littlemac8

She’s obviously trying to look more red carpet worthy, hence the improvements in her hair and makeup.  She has been looking more attractive as a result, especially from the neck up.  Now she’s wearing nicer clothes but she must be choosing the garments because they are consistently unflattering to her shape.  I have empathy for her poor posture.  Mine is bad, I know it and I can’t seem to improve it.  Sigh!

      • A little bit of exercise or yoga. I’m not suggesting she lose weight. But it is evident that she doesn’t work out this results in short & tight chest muscles and longer back muscles and under-developed abdominals. Which also makes a lot of her visual “weight” (it appears to the eye) to shift over and around a strapless top and makes her appear much larger than she probably is.

  • decormaven

Tire tread towel. An improvement over the last outing, but that’s not saying much.

  • Town

Lena Dunham looks like a popped can of Hungary Jack.  I’ve never seen her look good at all.  Get thee to a stylist.

    • H2olovngrl

Hungary Jack? Good friend of Indiana Jones? Wink, wink!

  • ChaCha_70

Sorry, but her horrible posture is kinda ruining it for me. Shoulders back Lena!

  • She has no waist and her boobs look like they’re in a binder. All she needs is a hat decorated with pink plastic flamingos and huge sunglasses and she’d fit into a Miami retirement home. I have a similar dress I wear in the summer to clean the house.

    • Tom Shea

Congratulations. I believe every single thing in your post is a complete fabrication. May be a TLo first. Jeez Louise.

      • joancarol

It’s weird because her head keeps getting prettier, but it seems like she is punishing her body for some reason.
She must be mad at it.

        • Call me Bee

This…is very insightful.  You’re probably right!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Her hair and makeup are good, hopefully the rest of her look will catch up someday.

  • kaycem

“great” is not even close to the word i’d use, but i will co-sign “improved.”  hair + makeup are at least flawless.

  • SugarSnap108

I guess you’re grading her on a huge curve, which is fine.  I think she looks very pretty from the neck up.  But strapless is a horrible choice for anyone who refuses to stand up straight.  It looks like she’s terrified the thing is going to slip — and it also looks like her fears are justified.

  • YolandaHawkins

Really?  This is a good look?  I’ll give her hair and make-up.  That dress is unremarkable.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She is about as challenging to gender norms as Ginnifer Goodwin is, but which I mean, not challenging at all, just lacking any fashion sense whatsoever. Swinton help us all if this is an example of gender rebellion.

  • hair and makeup look great and polished, but the strapless genre isn’t doing her any favors – her shoulders could use the definition given by a strap or structured neckline, and the empire/aline shape isn’t supporting her beauty, either. And her coloring definitely does not shine in this black/white combo. Actually, very few of us look our best in black/white – it’s just too stark for most to shine in.  It’s like the whole Michelle Obama deal – all her high waisted and empire shapes with a-line skirts just make her look like she’s all lap (not even all leg). MO is too short waisted for what she chooses, Lena appears to be so as well, and the straight across strapless just doesn’t suit her type of beauty.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She looks fab.  That dress does everything that the previous dresses didn’t do.  It hides where it needs to hide, and exposes the parts of her that look pretty amazing.  I like it.

  • snarkykitten

Dear Lena: YOUR TATTOOS ARE TERRIBLE. Stop thinking everything you wear must show them off.

You have money now. Get them touched up or something. They actually look like they have potential, but they always look like they were done by some scratcher in his greasy apartment.

and brush your hair! stand up straight!

  • Janet B

The dress fits, her makeup and hair look good, but the dress isn’t flattering in any way.

  • LauraWL

Maybe she could use some better foundation garments? I dunno. I think part of the problem is sloping shoulders, which make her look even more slouchy than she is, and the propensity to slouch forward to keep the strapless dress up, which, girl I feel ya. There are a LOT of clothes that flatter that shape without detracting from it though. And, strapless is not one of them… Overall all though, up snaps for improvement.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

I don’t really follow her much beyond this blog, but I don’t really understand her desire to constantly wear strapless dresses (wants to show off tats?). She looks uncomfortable and her posture is atrocious. In every picture I have the compulsion to yank the dress up (though I don’t know if there is enough fabric to do that). I think she would look fab deploying ladypants, or maybe a halter if she wants to go with a dress..something to add structure and support to the top.

  • “Great” is really overstating it.

  • Annabelle Archer

This is a personal best for her.
It’s okay to try and to care Lena, no one will take away your seat at the popular kids table.

  • All she has to do is stand up straight and I might actually give her an “ATTAGIRL!”

Seriously… her posture make it seem like she has NO shoulders.

  • mjude

i am so over the strapless dresses.  most women CAN NOT wear them.  she looks cute her but i bet she would look better with straps.

  • alyce1213

It’s a better dress, but . . . does she look great?  No.
What is her problem standing like a grown-up?  She looks like an awkward, petulant 4-year old.
Her consistent lack of appropriate undergarments, terrible posture and overexposed cheesy tattoos do nothing to support this possibly cute dress. Her hair and eye makeup look fine, though.
I so agree that “laughing at the absurdity of it all” is a pose.  I know lots of girls like her, only more authentic.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Improvement, but that’s not saying much.   I want to pull the dress up about three quarters of an inch. And give it some kind of yoke so it doesn’t feel like it will keep falling down.  Strapless is not really a good look for her.  It’s squeezing her upper shelf into two shelves.

  • schadenfreudelicious

she looks slouchy and schlumpy, strapless is not her friend…

  • butterflysunita

Yes, wearing a dress that looks like a moldy bath towel is an improvement for her.  But surely she can do better?

  • nannypoo

I like the hair and makeup but the dress is unattractive on the model and hideous on Lena. They are both slumped forward so I’m guessing that the dress feels like it’s sliding down. I think you need a lot of engineering to make a strapless dress feel like it’s staying where it belongs, and this one doesn’t even seem to have cups.

  • Carla_Charlton

She should branch out and wear something with straps/sleeves.

  • OrigamiRose

I still want to scrape the skin off her upper right arm.  That… thing is horrid.

  • Somebody has got to tell this girl about V-necks and wrap dresses.

  • She looks cute in spite of that fugly dress.  She could borrow a bit of jewelry to really make the outfit.  The shoes looks a little Payless.

  • E. D.

Pretty good, but it would have been better with the black trim and tattered hem on the runway.  And maybe a bracelet.

  • unpious

    Pattern: cute.
    Shoes: acceptable.
    Hair and makeup: fabulous.
    Posture: still depressing.

Stand up straight, shoulders back. It’ll fix everything. I promise. And if standing that way makes you feel like the dress will fall down, the dress is not fitted correctly.

She really is so damn pretty.

  • formerlyAnon

The shoes, here, add the polish she seems to resist.

  • mhleta

I haven’t been keeping tabs on her so I don’t know her track record, but I see a beautiful woman here who can do so much better than this. It’s going to be all about color, fit and proportion for her. She’s got to have all three happening. Some people can get away with less but I’m thinking she really needs to full equation

  • MilaXX

I’m not crazy about her love of strapless dresses because they do very bad things to her boobs. That yellow shcmatta she wore to the Grammy’s must never be spoken of again. Imagine my surprise when I saw this and actually liked it.

  • jw_ny

It is good for Lena.  This with straps, even thin spaghetti straps, would be so much better tho. Then, it could be a bit looser in the bust and she wouldn’t look so squashed.

  • formerlyAnon

Additional thought: like many young women who aren’t photographed for public consumption, I fear she is going to realize some time in her 40s that she wasted the possibilities of her 20s and 30s looking much as she later would in her 40s and 50s, just with younger skin. And that if she’d only sought and listened to advice, she’d have enjoyed what being young and looking slamming can buy you, when it was in her grasp.

I know many women who were above such things, once (it often went with our politics), and wistful about it now. Which is fine. It’s the ones who are really regretful that make me sad.

  • MintaHallWriter

Sorry, TLo. Can’t get on board with this . She SERIOUSLY needs to stop with the strapless thing.  It flattens and droops her chest pathetically.

You didn’t ask for an IN or OUT, but this is an OUTTTTTT

  • oh, not again.  Thakoon or Krakoff, I see no progress. please call back Zak Posen.

  • Belle239

Ugh.  She has a cute smile, but…..ugh.  The dress is not flattering at all and the bodice is sitting too low. And, I don’t know if she actually has a waist, but at least she should find something that makes it appear as if she did.  Sorry, I am not feelin’ this one bit.

  • It’s sad that this bath towel is considered an “improvement”.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s a better effort for her, but she still looks like ass.

  • Jecca2244

it is a no for me…It is a little shapeless…but her makeup looks pretty!

  • makeup is great!

  • demidaemon

I still don’t think strapless is her friend. It just makes her boobs look squished and uncomfortable. Also, makes me want to go and hoik the whole dress up. Step in the right direction, yes; good: no, not really.

  • It needs that black strip across the boobs…like the runway

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

this may be the best i’ve seen her look.  it’s like a very perfected version of her aesthetic.  i irrationally didn’t like her immediately, but only because i don’t like her tattoos (i like tattoos, just not hers).  but i’m coming around.

  • PeaceBang

The make-up and hair are very nice. But the dress is typically terrible on her. She has no idea how to dress — it’s like her one fashion commitment is to show off her ugly tats.

  • guest2visits

Hair and make-up look terrific; not on board with this dress, don’t know why she’s attached to this style.
Still looks like it doesn’t really fit and she’s just wrapped in material.

  • unbornfawn

    An improvement.

  • boweryboy

This is the best I’ve ever seen her look on the red carpet.  Let’s hope she got a new stylist or a new gay.

  • Coco Cornejo

Did you see her interview on Daily Show a couple of weeks back? She pretty much admitted that she’s not clued in to the whole red carpet thing (yet).

She looks good here. Not fabulous, but good. I felt so badly for her on the Daily Show she wore a mini dress that was clearly too small…about 5 sizes too small. Making sure that he has a good fit in her clothes would be a good first step for her to take.

  • beebee10

I get where you are coming from and that you don’t buy it that she wears this designer stuff to look bad. But I think she is up to something with her presentation to the cameras. I think she is that way. I don’t think we’re going to see Lena as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. She’s on some other wavelength, that’s all. At least right now she is and I kind of dig it. I like that she is smiling big, enjoying her wild success and her wild talent, and dumpy all at the same time.

  • Aly Light

I think her make-up is KILLAH. Take that, all you haters who didn’t believe her character on Girls could date such an attractive man.

  • This is an improvement for her, but it’s pretty terrible anyway – bath-towel, shitty posture, and strapless isn’t really flattering to her.

  • TSkot

“She looks great!?!”  On what planet??
Maybe from the neck up, but this schmatta does nothing for her.

  • frannyprof

Love hair & makeup. Dress is okay. Hate hate hate the shoes.

  • This is an improvement for her and she looks much slimmer here than in other dresses (not saying she has to be skinny, just saying that wearing a dress that makes you look 50lbs heavier than you are is not good). I do think she, and other women, needs to realize that strapless is not for everyone. I see so many “curvy” or “bigger” or “normal” or WHATEVER women trying to pull off strapless dresses (especially wedding dresses, god help them) and it just looks horrible. If you have some meat on you, you don’t need to look like your dress is falling off at any second. It just looks awkward. If that dress just had regular thick straps, how cute would it be on her??

    • l_c_ann

The dress would also need to have the darker pattern of the runway model, for some reason hers is just too pale.  Also, any ideas why the runway version appears (esp at the lower edge) to have interesting texture and hers is just boring flat.

    • snarkykitten

oh my god the wedding dresses. We had a string of weddings in my family and all of the brides were a bit curvy and ALL of them wore strapless gowns. Their boobs looked like a loaf of bread wrapped in organza and lace.

  • Anne StJean

I agree that this is better than her norm, but the fact that her best look is on par with those of teenage girls at homecoming dances, despite the thousand dollar difference, kind of renders this a little pitiful.

  • KayEmWhy

I’m sorry, but that’s a butt ugly dress. Her makeup is flawless though.

  • Mb

Posture!  Jesus Christ, girl, learn how to stand up straight, it will make your non-existent boobs look bigger if nothing else.  Awful dress doesn’t help matters.

  • Imasewsure

I hope she grows out of her strapless phase because it looks awful on her. She has pretty shoulders, etc. but it does not work! Still much improved… she is a cutie

  • Connie Harbor

A good bra and good posture would improve everything she wears by 100%

  • Who’s going to play Wilma to her Betty in the next film?

  • quiltrx

Pretty cute, for her type of style.  I still think she’d look better in something with straps or a halter-choker type neckline.  I have big square shoulders, unlike her, but I do have the big expanse of skin between neck and top-of-boob like her.    We both need something to break all that up a little bit!

  • BrooklynBomber

That is good, for her. the dress is cute enough, and hair and makeup aren’t bad (too much eyeliner, though). But what’s with the strapless all the time? I don’t understand the obsession, in general. It looks good on so few people.

  • VCR1

I completely agree with TLo–she’s headed in the right direction! I think her hair and makeup look pretty great and the dress isn’t bad at all.

Off the subject I would love it if TLo would add Girls to their television recaps. That would be so awesome!!

  • LuisaNL

I don’t think strapless is her friend. It maybe an improvement but I don’t like this at all. And Lena, sweetie, stand up straight for gawd’s sake!!

  • marcoUpstate

How on earth is this “getting it right”?  Can anyone wear a speckled bath towel on the red carpet now?

  • DeTrop

Thank God she’s not wearing platform shoes.  These look like she can handle them.  Overall I think she looks cute.  She has a very pretty face and her hair and makeup work.

  • The dress looks like it ate her boobs. Maybe I’m drunk but I’m not seeing the good here.

  • Aurumgirl

I disagree, this is not a “polished” look.  She still looks sloppy in it, although I have to say someone with some skill did her makeup this time around, and you can see a massive improvement on that alone.

The real need, here, is for someone small and loud to tell her that “Strapless”  will never be her friend.

  • Corsetmaker

Horrible. I’m all for individuality, avoiding the bland typically ‘styled’ look even if it annoys. But that’s just… not good. But I don’t know who she is anyway, so :/

  • Don’t get her obsession with strapless. It’s not doing her any favors.

  • Bathroom rag with tire marks. Nope, doesn’t work for me.

  • schoep

Strapless does not suit her at all.

  • miagain

wish she’d abandon the strapless look… it affects her posture.

  • Susan Crawford

I adore Lena: smart, funny, heartbreaking and insightful. But she could use a bit of good advice for her step-and-pose events.

First, work with someone who can make sure everything really fits well, and that the proportions work with her body.
Second, if she is locked in to the idea of strapless, look for dresses that have a good, supportive structure and do not mash her breasts.
Third, STAND UP STRAIGHT! And this may be the most important of all pieces of advice. If you know that the photogs are not always going to snap you at the most flattering angle (and most of them will end up making you look foreshortened) at least throw your shoulders back and keep your spine straight and your chin up. Round, slumping shoulders and a slouchy posture will do nothing for you, your dress, or the photos.

But the hair and make-up here are adorable. She looks adorable and pretty and totally herself. The dress looked great in the runway shot – why didn’t Lena’s version keep the black edging at the bodice and the frayed, raw edging? And the pattern looked skewed and twisted on her, while the model’s version was far more attractively placed.

Lots of comments on her tattoo. I can’t fault anyone for getting some ink, but when it is a jarring, distracting element – a little Dermablend might be in order.

  • I irrationally hate this woman.

  • Alyssa

    Much improved!!!

  • ojosazules

Much, much better. My eyes feel comfortable looking at her instead of skittering away in embarrassment.

  • Indigo54

Better but still a ways to go.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

she needs to stop slumping.  oh my god.  i want to put that child in a back brace.

  • GhostOfMisterPamuk

Dress is fine but not feeling the cheesy eyeshadow. Looks very much like she did it using one of those diagrams on the bottom of the compact.

  • She needs straps…and pull your shoulders back!

  • This would be even more of a win if she stood up straight.

  • oldbobbydraper

if this look is “right”, then something is very, very wrong.

  • oldbobbydraper

Read the quotes from her book on gawker. your hate is entirely rational.

  • Are you… sure that it’s actually Reed Krakoff? Not a knockoff? Her dress looks SO different from the model’s version in fit, design and texture. It looks cheap to boot.

  • So now we’re applauding actresses who step out in nothing but a bath towel?

I get the feeling that one time long ago when pressed for an answer to “What do you think is my best feature?” a beleaguered stylist quickly gave Miss Dunham a once over and unable to find a “best feature” settled said for the only thing on her that wouldn’t make a baby cry and said “Your creamy white shoulders Lena.” And therein lies the answer to why someone who clearly needs boning and straps and spanx keeps giving us formless and strapless.

  • Candigirl1968

This seems very unfinished.  Maybe with better posture (what is up with the slouch?!?) and accessories, this could work, but as it is, it’s just meh.

If she wants to go minimalist, she needs to wear something that, at the very least, has some color and richness to it.

  • pop_top

I feel like Lena Dunham is trolling. She is determined to make high end clothing look like she bought it last minute in the wrong size at Strawberry.

  • Dot

Why does she insist on strapless? Yuck. Strapless gown plus horrible posture guarantees that terrible photos will ensue.

  • barbarienne

I wish she were wearing a necklace, but I suppose that wouldn’t go with her minimalist aesthetic.

  • shelley514

What?  I don’t know what about rounded line backer shoulders in a strapless cocktail dress screams high fashion to the T & the Lo.  I can’t even believe they typed “Attagirl” under that last pic.  SMDH.

  • libraangel

She got it right???!!!! She looks like the hunchback of Notre Dame (Lena, honey: strapless NO GOOD on you) who was killed by an eighteen-wheeler driving over her. And why does she always stand like she’s gotta pee or something?

  • melanie0866

Eh, seriously?  I’ll agree it’s a big improvement, but it looks lumpy and shapeless, like it’s about to fall off, and strapless is not her friend.  She needs some good foundation garments and a more structured dress, and she’d look cute.

Also, she needs to pluck her eyebrows.

  • ccm800

Agreed TLO. She makes me think of Peggy Cass.

  • Katie Agnew

She needs to stand up straight. She always looks so uncomfortable.

  • julnyes

This is better than usual, but strapless is not her friend.

  • lilazander
