Kerry Washington in Giambattista Valli Couture

Posted on February 27, 2013

Ah, the post-Oscars letdown; that brief period where the stars all scuttle back to their hidey-holes to take off their tight clothes and uncomfortable shoes so they can eat carbs for the first time in weeks. It’s also, not coincidentally, that period when bitchy celebrity fashion bloggers scramble to find content to fill the day.

We’re not proud. We’re gonna do a rewind to the day before the Oscars; the day when Oscar-nervous stars pretend to be down with the indy film scene and dress “funky” so they can hit the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet like they don’t have a care in the world.

Kerry? That’s your cue.

Kerry Washington attends the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards in a Giambattista Valli couture dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps, a Bottega Veneta clutch, and a Monique  Péan ring.

Christian Louboutin ‘Sissi’ Pump

We suppose she’s a true fashionista, because like all true fashionistas, her looks tend to veer from fabulous to WTFery from day to day. Guess which one this is. In a way, we’re kind of impressed. Somehow, she put together a look that all goes together, while looking like it all clashes. We can’t with that dress. Both fabrics are gorgeous, but you put them together and the eye doesn’t know where to go. You put them with a MATCHY PAIR OF FLORAL BEADED SHOES MY GOD SOMEONE CATCH ME … and T Lo fall out. Adele did this at the Grammys. Is this a thing now, silly Hollywood stylists? Bad enough you forced us to accept the matchy shoe, but now we’re supposed to get all excited over a matchy PRINT shoe? Oh, no. The line, it is drawn. Right here, bitches. This is a thing up with which we will not put. We mean it, fashion people. We’re gonna FIGHT and we’re gonna fight HARD.

Also, the bag clashes and looks cheap.

I actually really like the dress- I love both patterns, and the fit on her is just beautiful. The shoes, however,  are just a step too far and that clutch adds absolutely nothing. Makeup looks great too, but her weave is awful. She’s someone who NEEDS bangs, just not those bangs.

    • Vera L-

I like the dress too, but the fabric looks like it has a lot of texture. Which makes me think it’s heavy and I like it less…I like the shoes but NOT with that dress.

    •  I love the dress. The shoes push it over the edge into WTF were you thinking but I think the dress is quite lovely.

    • e jerry powell

I get the impression that the Saturday hair is hers and the Sunday hair was the weave.

  • DeGuz

Really, Miss Kerry? You took a gorgeous dress and made it dowdy with a matchy shoe and my grandmother’s clutch.

  • 3boysful

This woman is so lovely she can pull off a lot.  The dress might’ve worked IF it were slightly above the knee, and was paired with shoes that did not look like wide ballet flats from the front (I think that’s the white lining doing that).  Clutch is awful.

    • Sobaika

Agreed, the clutch is the worst offender. I actually think she is working this look like a paycheck, head to toe.

      • MissAnnieRN

I totally agree.  I think she looks awesome.  I’d cut a bitch for those shoes.  Would not have thought to pair them with this look.  This is the same fabric Julianna Margulies wore to the Emmy’s, no?  I loved it more on her, I have to admit.

  • I can only say that I like the colors on her. Otherwise, MEH to the nth degree.  And those shoes?  Send them somewhere far away, please.

    • RescueMe23

  • LearnedFoot

I actually love the shoes. Just NOT with that dress.

    • Jackie4g

What would you wear when you wore those shoes? Would they be the foundation of an outfit built around them?

      • Adriana_Paula

Yep; with a solid green outfit, say, they’d be stunning.

      • LearnedFoot

Oh yes, the shoes would definitely need to be the starting point. A sharp white pantsuit could work well, or a green dress (as suggested by Adriana).

But really? If I owned these shoes, I’d wear them ALL THE TIME, including with jeans to the kid’s soccer games.

        • Jackie4g

And you’d be doing the good deed of aerating the field, although I think the heels might suffer a bit.  I have, on occasion, loved a pair of shoes so much that the outfit was built around them. Thanks.

  • kmk05

The only thing I truly hate is the pair of shoes. Her makeup is flawless: very springy, especially with that dress!

  • Dhammadina

Supercute. Harbinger of spring. She carries her own woven basket for berry picking.

  • Introspective

the dress is already doing a LOT on its own without the shoe, which is darling but Id love to see with a solid or even a striped/color blocked dress.

kerry, you are a doll but this look went too far. garden party on crack far.

  • kittenwithaquip

I have no commentary on the dress. I just want you two to know that I LOVE waking up to your wit. It makes my dreary ol’ day.

    • Above sentiment seconded by me.

      • Indigo54

I wanted to be second. Ok, sentiment third-ed(?) by Indigo!

  • gsk241

True, this could have been better executed, but I don’t think it’s as bad as all that.  The colors are really beautiful on her.

  • MilaXX

I like the dress and face. I dislike the wig and shoe. Kinda ambivalent about the bag.

  • decormaven

Crewel work on a pump? And pairing said shoe to match the outfit’s print? Crimes! Someone must pay.

  • SewingSiren

She’s at her best when she is working a very slight retro early 60’s look. I like the dress and the shoes. The only thing I don’t like, in fact, is the bag. And it’s  not that bad.

  • Verascity

You know, I would actually love it — crazy-ass patterns and matching shoes and all — if it fit better and if she had a better bag. Although I don’t hate the matchy like Tlo does.

  • jilly_d

Burn the shoes.  Burn them with fire!

    • I don’t know if fire is gonna do it. Might need a priest and some holy water! 🙂

  • annrr

Those shoes look like a grown up version of a Lelli Keli and they are hideous

  • nannypoo

I like this slightly-too-long dress and I hate the shoes with it. But the fabric seems to be embellished with those little plastic things kids make in the oven. Shrinkies?

    • EverybodysStarling

Ha, that sounds like a perfect little crafts project for a rainy sunday afternoon and some old pair of pumps. 😀

  • mozzer0906

The shoes are horrible.  Just horrible.  WTF

  • I agree with the comments on the shoes, but I think the rest of the look is fantastic and very fashionable. It’s outside the box, but she can handle it. Plus, she’s owning it and looks so confident. She looks pretty.

  • haha i like this look.
not sure about the highlights, but thats minor.

  • roadtrip1000

That’s the perfect outfit for taking out my 93 year old grandmother to lunch. She would so approve.

  • crackineggs

I’m going to be Gorgonzola here.  I kind of like everything.

  • I think the dress is adorable, and I just can’t get worked up over a pair of shoes.

  • I’m just glad you’re going to cover the Indie Spirits at all. 🙂

And I actually do like this dress but not with the shoes or purse.

  • pepper76

It’s a little bit big and too long on her, but she looks adorable. She looks like spring and I love it.

  • Oy, I guess matchy-pattern shoes really ARE a trend now. WOOF. I never thought I’d yearn for a putty-colored shoe.

    • Adriana_Paula

Don’t let this take you back to the bad place, Kate.

  • It takes a lot of work to make a Bottega Veneta clutch look cheap.  I like the dress (especially the upper pattern) and I LOVE the shoes, but certainly not together.  As it is, my eyeballs hurt, and I’m not even hung over.

  • I really like the dress. BUT… the hem hits her at a weird spot. It needs to be just a couple of inches shorter. And those shoes and clutch need to be set on fire.

  • formerlyAnon

In theory I dislike the dress a lot and shoes a little. On Ms. Washington, I confess I think it all works. Don’t know how. Maybe because I’m evaluating in pics, at a distance?  Clutch is more than a bit too much.

  • I’m sorry, I LOVE THIS on her. And clashing fabrics usually scare me. It’s probably the attitude of confidence that she evokes in the outfit too.

She and Sarah Jessica Parker are the only 2 women I know who are capable of such fabulous folly.

    • I agree, I like the dress AND I even like it with the shoes. But I hate that bag- the bag is awful.

  • Lilithcat

There is something off about the proportions of the dress.  If it fit, I’d like it.

I also love the shoes!  But not with this dress.

  • BrooklynBomber

I’m with you, TLo.  And not only matchy shoe, but completely mis-matchy clutch. Total wtf.

p.s. I guess we’re stuck with this mid-calf hem for a while. She’s handling at well as anybody I’ve seen, though.

  • I love the dress and shoes.  Can we talk about the stringy hair?

  • Little_Olive

Worse than the matchy shoe/purse is the not-really-matchy shoe/purse.

And on Barbie’s makeup set, no less.

    I say overkill.

  • There is a difference between funky and tacky. This is full on tacky.

  • I think she looks great. I love the dress but the shoes are a little much.

  • MissFern

i kind of love the whole thing……. when i disagree with my uncles, TLo, I know it’s going to be a weird day.

  • miagain

The sum of the parts do not add up…

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I really like the dress, but it needs around 3′ shorter and she needs to lose the shoes and the clutch.  The Independent Spirit Awards always bring out the weird in the stars.  Do you suppose because it is at the beach, outside, at a time of year when it is usually pretty chilly outside at the beach?

  • teensmom99

Love the dress on her–though only she could pull it off.

  • velomango

I, um, sort of love it and wish I owned the entire ensemble.

  • Monday1900

Love the shoes, hate the dress.  I think the prints look muddy and they clash with each other.

  • Indigo54

Wait a minute!  Some of y’all actually like this grandma’s curtains looking thing?  I can’t believe it.  It’s ugly – all of it! Too long, too clashy, too old and the cut makes her look poochy below the waist.   Don’t even get me started with those shoes!  This get-up makes me cross.  (Cross?  did I really say that?)

    • Indigo54

Oh and about that clutch somebody dug up from the trash bin out back at Goodwill…  Lord have mercy!

  • Judy_J

Matchy floral shoes! She should have had a matchy floral bag and the outrage would be complete.

  • kategs

I love those shoes just not with that dress.

  • Deedles

Try again, missy. Juliana Margulies already rocked that skirt fabric in her Primetime Emmy Awards gown.

  • DinahR

I really like this dress!!  oh noes

  • jw_ny

I support your stance on not putting up with this silly new trend of matchy print shoes!  Ridiculous.

I was almost on board with the dress here tho…but once I saw the shoes, it killed any hope of liking any of the look.

  • samo_samo

I love the look. I love Impressionist paintings and that’s what grabbed me about the dress- the fact that it reminds me of an Impressionist painting. I even love the matchy match shoes. She’s so adorable. BTW- yeah, she could have done better with the clutch.

  • piecesofconfetti

I kind of love it. *shrug*

  • appliquer

I like the dress – but the accessories don’t work.

  • Janet B

Most stars are afraid of prints and color and then along comes Miss Kerry embracing three in one outfit. Too bad that they just don’t seem to belong together.

  • BuffaloBarbara

It’s pretty in a garden party sort of way.  The shoes, though… the shoes.  And the closeup on one where she’s sliding down it and the beady part is digging at the side of her foot?  Podiatrists in Hollywood must do good business.

I’m not a big fan of mixed prints (I know, blasphemy), but as they go, this isn’t too distracting.

  • kimmeister

Well, at least she had lovely makeup in her favor.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The dress and the shoes are awesome…separately. Someone’s gay needs a good slap upside his head.

    • This is my exact thought – I liked the dress until I scrolled down and saw the shoes – at that moment the entire look went little old lady. It’s a pity because as you said, the separate pieces are fabulous. I didn’t even realize how fabulous the shoes were until I saw the up-close solo pic, so much were they brought down by the matchiness.

  • Sara__B

Hair and makeup look great. The dress, which seemed OK at first, gets worse the more I look at it, so I’m not going to look anymore.

  • butterflysunita

I am with you on the matching printed shoes, TLo.  I will join you in the fight!

  • marilyn

I accept that stylists and designers are just randomly trying new stuff, sending it out there to see if it flies.  This mixed pattern ideas is from that school of thought.  For an odd thing, it is okay.  The matchy-matchy shoes are okay too.  I think it would be a good outfit for going out to brunch, not going to an awards show.  It does not seem ‘evening’ enough for such a formal occasion.  The other problem is that the Beautiful People cannot be seen in the same thing twice, so they are always frantically scouting for something new to wear.  Which is how this happens.   The good news is that she won’t wear it again, and she will move on to something better.  I give her a pass on this one.

  • Annabelle Archer

Pretty hair, fab face, but that outfit is giving me a migraine.

  • ojosazules

I think the dress is very pretty. The colors are great on her.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Og good grief, where’s the Allegra? This outfit is giving me premature hay fever. Too.Much.

  • up with pod people

Naw, I love it. It’s not a trend that’ll last forever but I am so happy to have shoes that are visually present, I’ll take it. It helps that this whole colourway is glorious.

  • shopgirl716

Love, love, love the dress.  The shoes are horrible.

  • NatalieD28

It always takes me a long time to really look at & critique her clothes since she’s just so absolutely stunning that I’m distracted! She can seemingly never do wrong by me!

  • SugarSnap108

I think I’d really like this dress if it had a pencil skirt fit.  And I don’t actually mind it as is.  But NO to the shoes (with this dress at least).

  • alyce1213

Plain black pumps with the dress.

LBD (or the like) with the shoes.

  • Zippypie

I actually like the dress but it’s too long.  If it hit right above the knee and was paired with a sharp skinny black belt instead of tacked on grosgrain ribbon (you can see the tacks – tacky!!) and kicky black pumps she would have looked retro chic. Makeup is very pretty.  That clutch needs to be burned.

The matchy print shoes are tragic.  I don’t blame the stylists though – didn’t several designers show this monstrousity on the runway for Spring?

  • another_laura

I’m right there with you, T Lo.  Yikes!

  • Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the Latin American me but I like the shoes with the dress. It is a lot going on, but it’s a lot of awesome going on. The bag is not good though.

  • Trisha26

The outfit is a disaster, but her hair (even with the booms) and makeup look so pretty – what happened at the Oscars?

  • MaryanneGirl

Honestly? This reminds me of when my Grandma’s Alzheimer’s started kicking in & she just wore whatever she fancied.  Sometimes it was batshit crazy, and sometimes it actually almost went together. That’s what this feels like. It…almost…works?  But not really.

  • l_c_ann

But the shoes aren’t matchy, exactly.  They’re beaded.  The dress fabrics are prints, with the same overembroidery on both.  I’d love the dress if the top were just the overembroidery on a solid color (one from the skirt)  (and with different shoes.)

I’m not sure what dress those shoes would be right for.

  • I think the dress is amazing, but yes, the shoes took it too far.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

I love the dress, but agree the shoes and clutch could have been better.

  • Indigo54

Decided to take another look now that I’ve eaten.  Still cant.

  • Imasewsure

Dress is pretty but too long and/or loose at the bottom. Hate the shoes of course with this!

  • EEKstl

She had me til the shoes (and despite the clutch).  WTFery indeed.

  • Cathy S

I like the dress. But the clutch and the shoes are terrible. Especially the shoes.

  • The dress is growing on me (pun intended) but I would like those shoes so much better with a pair of denim skinnies and a white top.

  • Luke Pacheco

each piece … by itself… is wonderful.  The shoes?  To die for (with a different outfit.. )  you can’t take four ‘interest’ pieces and put them together to make some super-outfit.  This isn’t Voltron

  • AthenaJ

She’s lucky she’s a gorgeous movie star. Ony anyone else that look would scream ‘eccentric grandma’.

    • Qitkat

I would be pleased as punch if someone called me *eccentric grandma*. But then I am, a grandma, that is, and she isn’t.

  • Elaine Lang

Is the bodice of that dress one of those Magic Eye things?   If you blur your vision, do you see a dolphin or a unicorn or something?

  • i like it all down to the shoes.  i love the shoes, but i’d like to see them paired with a solid or color-blocked piece, or maybe separates where there’s a solid and some stripes put together.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • Qitkat

    And yet I love it.

  • i must be crazy since i actually like this.  green is, of course, my color and the two prints remind me of the woods outside my door in springtime.  are the shoes actually beaded, or are they needlepoint/counted cross stitch?  wish my mama was still with us so i could show them to her.  she was a master needleworker.

  • I love this whole look, even the granny shoes. Would wear.

  • rumcg66

I don’t mind the dress patterns at all; I loved this look until I got to the shoes and then it was like “ah, my eyes!”

  • suzq

I love it.  It’s fun and cheeky.  Even the shoes.

Do we need to get off your lawn now?

  • pookiesmom

I kind of love this, aside from the shoes.

  • LaSylphide

Love the dress; agree the shoes should be elsewhere, preferably on my feet…

  • libraangel

This looks like something my aunt wore in 1960. and that ain’t good

  • betorah

Dress would be greatly improved by shortening it to right below the knee. Ixnay on the intedpray oeshay.

  • This dress is flat-out gorgeous. The shoe is overkill. I actually like the clutch (*ducks*); it matches her watch.

  • PeaceBang

    Thank you for your outrage.

  • As if I didn’t love you already, you quote Churchill to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition.  Could you guys get any better?

  • peachy

that’s ‘funky’ alright — in the sense that a milk container left in my fridge for 3 months got ‘funky’.

  • Frank Lithium

T Lo high as fuck, thinking Ms. Washington does not look anything but fabulous here.

  • I like the matchy shoe…it’s so cute…

  • I actually love this. So much.
