Julie Bowen in Catherine Malandrino

Posted on February 19, 2013

It’s the week before the Oscars and half of Hollywood is nesting at the moment, which means our red carpet pickings are slim. This isn’t the most exciting look in the world, but we’ll throw an “Attagirl” her way for bucking some of her style mistakes:

Julie Bowen attends the 2013 Writers Guild Awards in Los Angeles in a Catherine Malandrino orange dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Catherine Malandrino Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Sarah Stewart

Yeah, it’s a little plainly prom-y, but she tends toward sparkly, severe, sternum-baring gowns and this has a nicely colorful softness to it that looks good on her. We think a decent piece of gold statement jewelry would have done an awful lot to zhuzh this look up considerably. That ring’s not cutting it. We also think her hair looks absolutely INSANE and pretty much ruins the look. Seriously, what the hell is going on there? She looks like she rolled out of bed and straight into that dress.

  • I prefer the model’s dress – both shape/design and color.

    • gabbilevy

Agree. The thicker strap helps balance the skirt much better than Julie’s spaghetti straps. And that rich green is gorgeous.

    • Alyssa

Me too, and I think that color would have looked awesome on Julie.

      • Candigirl1968

ITA.  The original look would have been a dozen times better.  Also needs bolder makeup.

      • capybara_cafe

Me three. I love the shape of the original strap, and that color is beautiful.

    • Judi Townsend

      me too!

    • Same here.  The original bodice would have flattered Julie more than the spaghetti straps.

  • lexilexi

I bet the green would have looked wonderful on her.

  • In_Stitches

It makes her look so…luscious.  I would never have expected orange would work for her, but it makes her skin so warm.  Hair is straight JBF, but that’s perfect for her, considering she so often defaults to severe looks.  Wish she’d kept the original straps, but eh…she looks great in it and she looks like she knows it.  I’m calling it a WERQ.

  • Sobaika

The shoes are not working for me, but this is very good for her. I wonder if she got a new stylist recently? This and her leather SAG awards gown are (sadly) the best things she’s ever worn.

    • The leather dress with the embellished shoulders? Yep. Pretty damn fantastic. The best thing she’s ever worn.

Also, you can tell that Julie enjoys fashion. I can appreciate that.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed on all counts… also don’t like the length on her (or the shoes with the length, or both)… ok ignoring the hair but not great

  • Fordzo

I wish she’d given the green a go.  When I think of her on the red carpet, I always think of her in bright, citrusy colors.  I’d like to have seen her in the deep green.

  • Janet B

Pretty dress, she probably stood out in the sea of black (I watched a few minutes online, very little color in the audience). I really like the green version better.

  • Real Housewife of Orange County

  • butterflysunita

I like the shinier waist on the model’s dress.  But it’s a lovely dress.  Her hair is horrible.

  • I don’t love spaghetti straps, but I think the straps on the model (along with the color) look very bridesmaid. So I guess she did alright.

  • Annabelle Archer

She looks drunk and more than a little insane.  I wish she’d kept the wider straps, I wish she’d kept the green, I wish she’d done it all differently, pretty much.

  • MilaXX

She definitely needs an earring or a necklace but I don’t completely hate the hair. I would have preferred the straps the model is wearing.

  • Zippypie

The color is fabulous, but I’m not sure it’s fabulous on her.  I think the green would have looked better, along as many kittens have remarked, with the original straps.  The lack of necklace/earrings or bracelet bothers me more than the hair, though the hair is not that flattering.  She looks like she’s trying a dress on at the mall, not actually at an event.  It’s not horrible, but she could’ve brought a little effort.

  • TAGinMO

Agree basically 100% with TLo’s commentary. HATE the JBS hair.

  • It’s a beach dress with beach hair.

  • Rand Ortega

The yellow takes all of the impact from the dress. Plus she & the stylist/designer reduced it even further by not giving the sash the satin contrast of the original. The green would’ve really hit it out of the park for Julie.

  • alyce1213

The orange is pretty, but I wish she’d worn it in green and kept the wide straps, which give the dress more substance.
    Ooh that hair.

  • elemspbee

    horrid hair.
the green would have been a better choice, and as well as the non-strap shoulders.
    Must be slim pickins indeed.

  • sablehunter

Beautiful color on her, but the top half looks like it’s off a dress from the juniors department.

  • ankali

Messy hair aside, this is the best she’s ever looked to me. So much softer than her usual.

  • pop_top

I echo the ‘original straps’ comments. Some Bedhead and earrings would have helped though.

  • I love this dress on her. The thicker straps on the model’s dress would, IMHO, make the dress look matronly. I agree with TLO on the jewelry; this could use a statement piece, some earrings or a fabulous necklace. I’ve noticed this a lot lately; lady stars that have access to all the jewels in the world aren’t bedecking themselves as much as they used to. Such a shame.

  • Dot

Looks beautiful on the model, but really cheap on JB. I don’t think this color is very flattering on her. She kind of looks like a column of orange.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Not many fair skinned women can wear that bright an orange…it looks really good on her. But her half assed hair ruins it.

  • n a

Pretty color, but hon, would some support kill ya?

  • formerlyAnon

Whomever did her hair (IF it was done that day, really, it looks like this is last night’s do, slept on, gingerly partly-combed and pulled back) needs to be fired.

    • decormaven

Hear, hear! There’s no way this hair was “done.” Looks like it was combed with a spoon.

  • nannypoo

I like orange, but this is way too bright. The green is a lot better. I’m thinking I don’t like the shoes either, and her hair is a mess.

  • barbarienne

I think she and the dress are a little too close in color. I hope it’s just the photographs, because I have a calibrated monitor.

It’s bad enough when someone matches their gown and their skin is a normal human shade. This is verging into Oompa Loompa territory. Maybe her hair looks like that because they had to leach the green out of it.

    • Spicytomato1

My thoughts exactly. I like the idea of an orange dress in theory but in reality there’s just not enough contrast between the colors of her skin and the fabric.

And I’m not surprised to see her with bad hair. She rarely seems to get it right, hair-wise.

  • libraangel

    Um, …o.k.   Necklace, please

  • I like the version on the model better. But WTF is up with Julie’s hair?!?

  • HK4Seven

So her hair is bad but Nicole Kidman’s worked?  What universe is this??

    • A universe where entirely different hairstyles on entirely different people look entirely different.

      • HK4Seven

You’re right- I looked at Nicole again and the hair is crazy but it works.  There’s really no comparison.  Sorry for the snark.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Agreed…Nicole Kidman’s hair was lumpy too, but somehow that was ok.

  • capybara_cafe

I know what happened with the hair. She was wearing one of those horrible things she usually shows up in, and some volunteer Style Gays knocked her down in the hallway, ripped it off of her, and threw this on instead. It’s the only explanation.

  • mhleta

This dress does indeed do wonderful things for her tiny figure, which can look a tad sinewy at times. Agree about the hair. There’s a fine line between craftily tussled and legit bed-head, but we sure as hell know the difference when we see it.

  • girliecue

This is the best dress choice I think she’s made yet. I’ll stop there.

  • If it was green with wider shoulder straps it would have been stunning.

  • would LOVE to see her in the green version!

  • peachy

    can’t stand her. can’t stand this get-up.

  • oldbobbydraper

how can she be surrounded by so many gays, yet not one of them is a fashion gay? i don’t get it.

  • schadenfreudelicious

the green version of the dress is light years better…and that is some seriously freshly f*cked hair right there….

  • She should of went for the green.  It would have looked perfect, except for her hair.  Was she making out before she got there?

  • lobsterlen

Everything about the green gown is stunning. I love the fuller shoulder straps much better than boring spaghetti straps. The spaghetti straps make the gown so ordinary.

  • Louise Bryan

I kind of hate spaghetti straps, but she looks pretty enough.  *yawn*

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Dull, and hate the color.  And she needs to run a brush through that rats nest on her head.

  • Oh praise the lords that she’s finally found her style. I love her in this. Now if she’d only figure out how to stand straight…

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

What the fuck?  It IS sternum baring and she looks like she had a fight with an orange highway cone and the cone won.  What the HELL is wrong with her hair?  Are those dark roots I’m staring at?  NO NO NO NO NO.
