Jessica Chastain in Christian Dior

Posted on February 18, 2013

Oh dear. It seems the pressures of nominee-dressing at the height of awards season has finally taken its toll on poor Jessica. Either that, or she ran out of dresses before the Oscars and she’s saving the last good dress for the big night. Either way, this ain’t good:

Jessica Chastain attends the 2013 Writers Guild Awards in a Christian Dior dress accessorized with Harry Winston earrings and Jimmy Choo sandals.

And the tragedy of it is, if she’d just gone with the black, she’d look great. It’s that color. That dingy foundation garment color. Old bras and grandma’s slips. It looks good on pretty much no one and it looks especially bad on a pale red head. Plus it’s all satiny and puckery and we just hate it. Bleh. Cute shoes, though. What’s with the Ma Ingalls hair?

apparently you really can rewear that ugly bridesmaid dress again!….

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        Yeah, but you shouldn’t!

    • gabbilevy

Oh, honey. Take the week off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

Yeah, in literally any other color (okay, not yellow, with her coloring), it’d be an adorable dress.

    • MissAnnieRN

She needs a new stylist.  She is so unbelievably pretty.  I always hope that she will show up to an event looking better than everyone else, and yet…

Old bras.  This looks like a ballet costume that the company pulled out of a storage closet under the eaves in the studio and the Ballet Mistress told all the young corps dancers about the time she wore it in swan lake in 1950.

    • BP180

Hmm, I think she looks kind of good.  She’s standing awkwardly in the first picture, but she’s pulling it off in the rest.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yes, despite her being so fair, the blush/undies color just washes her out.  She’d have looked great in the black.  And is it my imagination, or is the skirt on the model just a tiny bit longer?  Could just be my crappy eyesight, but if it is, I think the slightly longer length is more flattering.

      • AthenaJ

I noticed the longer length on the model, too. Much better longer and in black!

      • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Yes, the skirt length is longer on the model. However, I disagree that the longer length is more flattering. Then again, I’m not a big fan of tea-length or ankle-length.

        • ankali

I’m with you. The tea-length hem is one of my fashion nemeses.

          • SerpentsDance

It just looks so awkward 99% of the time. Especially if you have anything other than extremely dainty ankles.

    • aeb1986

I too am a pale red-head and am a bridemaid in my friends wedding where we have to wear a dress that is almost this exact same color. I am too afraid to even try it on yet for fear I will look just like this. Pale red heads should never wear this color by CHOICE!

      • SugarSnap108

As a fellow pale redhead, I say Amen.

      • alyce1213

Blush = Death.  If we venture into peach territory, it’s carefully — with deeper, richer tones that warm up the skin.

      • Mazenderan

Yes.  This. Makes us look sickly.  Like a consumptive heroine in a Victorian novel.

    • http://twitter.com/RozSeven Roz

I beg your pardon. Ma Ingalls would NEVER expose her ears like that!

    • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

Abysmal.  She’s disappearing before our eyes!

    • teensmom99

I like her make up (trying to be a positive, noncritical upbeat person).  Actually I like the shoes, too but they are too expected with the dress–actually, costumey. They look a little like character shoes when matched with the tutu.

    • frannyprof

I would have loved to see her in the black. I actually like her hair & makeup. Love the shoes.

    • RzYoung

It’s like someone desaturated her…sorry, I spend too long in PhotoShop

      • Belle239

Totally!  She looks so washed out.  And she is so pretty that there has to be SOME colors she could wear that “enhance” instead of “desaturate”!

    • Clifford Chiu

i think she looks pretty spectacular.

    • nannypoo

When I saw the thumbnail I thought, yeah the color is boring but TLo are being unnecessarily picky about this. Then I scrolled down. Good God Almighty, WTF? How can she dress like this? She’s thin, rich and beautiful. How hard can it be?

    • wawawah

      Tortured!

      • sk8tfan

Yes! And her poor bosoms are desperately struggling to get free of that torture device they’re squished into. Bad color, bad fit, bad girl.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I would also like to note that her shoes FIT and that she has a pretty pedi. Yay! Can I get past the fugly dress? No, but she gets bonus points for the other.

    • Pants_are_a_must

This is not your color, Jessica Chastain. That is nobody’s color. Whoever’s hooking you up with those dresses should be spanked.

    • jw_ny

      yes, cute shoes.

      that’s all…

    • l_c_ann

Answering the unasked question “What do you wear when you’ve played the death of your estranged Father card?” and nobody noticed.

    • crash1212

Love the hair and make-up and the shoes. Everything in between is fugly. I think that’s an exceedingly ugly dress – in both colors.

    • Jangle57

I’m sorry, is there someone in that picture?  All I see is a mass of flesh colored camouflage…..

    • SugarSnap108

If this were a deep blue she’d look worlds better — but I still wouldn’t be sold on the bodice.  It’s a bit odd, with the whole fake-pocket thing.
I do love those shoes, though.

    • MilaXX

That’s it in a nutshell; wrong colored dress and awful hair.

    • ashtangajunkie

Should have worn the black. I really dislike this non-colour. However, her face is beautiful and I love the shoes and red pedicure. So there’s that.

    • Tatiana Luján

I also wish that, besides than being a different color, the dress was shorter or longer, because as it is, it is making her hips look wider that they are and her legs look shorter.

    • Judy_S

      Ready for her recital.

    • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

I think she looks great from the boobs up. The rest, meh.

    • Jellybish

      Sad Ballerina.

    • unbornfawn

Did she run out of good hair and make-up too?

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

Any dress that makes a model look that hip-y isn’t going to do any non-model body type favours.

    • afabulous50

No one should be allowed to wear beiges & nudes on the RC anymore.  It should be punishable by a fine…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

I’m sorry, but it’s not just the color. The whole look is bad head-to-toe, from ballet teacher hair to dancer shoes (nothing wrong with either, if worn for their intended purpose.) And that monstrosity of a frock is heaves-inducing. Too tight (how hard is it to dress a skinny starlet in clothes that fit???) and bumpy, wrong length, not nearly enough jewelry for a red-carpet look. Get a new stylist, girl.

    • carolynmo

This makes me like Emma Stone’s dress now.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

Those shoes are giving me life. I covet them. Is it wrong to covet during Lent?

    • TRSTL

Wow, how such a pretty dress in black could go so fugly so quickly!  Is it just me, the camera angle or smoething else that makes the porprtions of the bodice to the skirt look way top heavy on Ms. Chastain instead of graceful on the model?

      • Corsetmaker

Her skirt is shorter so the proportions are all off. It needed the longer skirt.

    • Lilithcat

Third row of the corps de ballet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Why as a fair skinned ginger would you attempt this color?  The only points she gets is for saving us all from the sheer-skirt-over-granny-panties look that is on the model.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Pretty dress, but she should have stuck with the black version. I’ll take this one, though. It’ll go great with my darker skin tone.

    • JauntyJohn

I think part of the problem is that this is a dress which requires movement.  Even the still shot of the model speaks to that.  Thus the standard crossed-leg pose is not up to the task.  Honey, grab the skirt at it’s corner and pull it out a bit as if ready to curtsey.  Super-cock the hip. Something!
And Yes to all on the color critique.  I’m thinking Pink would be too Quincienera and Red would be too I’m-late-for-the-Christmas-Party… some interesting green?  A lavender maybe (though then I think you’re very spring).  Black is a cheat, it goes with all.
I file this under  “Almost, but the dress is wearing her more than she is wearing the dress.”

    • alyce1213

There’s some bulky construction going on at the top that I don’t think is flattering, not even in black – draping in two directions, false pocket plackets, etc.  Too much.  I’m glad she opted out of the visible granny panties, at least.
The shoes are DWTS (only higher).

What a shame.  She’s so gorgeous and will you look at her skin!  That is not retouched.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

      Stiff and colorless and awful!

    • Elizabeth Silverstein

If it were a bright blue she would look stunning. Oh, except for the fact that the bodice is kind of tight and her boobage is spilling over the top. But other than the color and the fit, she looks great. Except for her hair, but otherwise, fabulous.

Also, she needs to tell Dan Stevens that all of the bitter kittens are very very angry with him for leaving DA and ruining our favorite guilty pleasure and just making it guilty not pleasurable.

    • butterflysunita

Also thought when I saw the photos that this dress would have been just fine in black.

    • lrhoff

Now, I don’t think it’s THAT bad….could’ve used pops of color, though, for sure.  Jewelry?

    • EEKstl

I can proudly say that as I was scrolling down I was saying to myself: If only she’d stuck with the black, she would have been fine!  I love when we think alike! That said, this is a HORRIBLE color on her.  And tulle and ballet pink do not work, unless of course you actually ARE a ballerina.

    • lrober03

Oh gurl.  Her torso looks so short.

    • miagain

She looks so beautiful in the close up (4th picture down) shot…
      And that movie was fabulous!!

    • Annabelle Archer

The words “Oh honey, no.” were invented for just this occasion.  Terrible!

    • ConnieBV

This needed to be chartreuse. How she manages to ugly herself up to such an extreme is a total X-File. She was stunning in The Help.

    • nomoreprinces

Wilting ballerina.  All the fluff’s gone out of her tutu.

    • Tapetum

That’s not Ma Ingall’s hair! Ma Ingalls would never have been so risque as to show off her ears!

Out, though it pains me to say it. She really pretty, and the color itself flatters her skin tones fairly well – but it’s such a horrible combination with the technical aspects of the dress.

    • maggiemaybe

Hello Grannies girdle! Those shoes are totally yummy, though.

    • Cathy S

Yeah, the one in black with the longer hem was nice. She looks terrible in that color.

    • SRQkitten

      Lampshade skirt. Ugh.

      srq

    • plinkiedoodle

Okay, I’m feeling queazy now…Jessica, please take that thing off.

    • appliquer

Love the hair and makeup. Hate the shoes. The dress would have been a knock-out in black or royal blue – anything but that awful lingerie color.

    • Imasewsure

Old bras and grandma’s slips. LH on Pr hair… nuf said. All fug covered

    • OrigamiRose

      *screams, closes down laptop*

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

Oy. Really awful. The shoes are quite fab, however.

    • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

Is it the angle of the pictures or that dress that is making her look so stumpy? It’s like someone sliced out half a foot from her middle and stuck the two bits back together.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

      also, i hate the eyebrows!

    • pulpytomato

It’s a classic ballerina look. I bet she feels very feminine and pretty. This color isn’t ideal on me, but I still wear it and probably always will.

    • 3boysful

I guess no one is noticing because of the “almost-her-skin” color, but that the bodice doesn’t fit.  Exhibit A–Her left boob.

    • prettybigkitty

      So close, yet so far.

    • decormaven

A pox on this dingy dishwasher shade of fabric! That dress in black would have been a near-WERQ.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

They were clearly saving the black for Marion Cotillard.

    • Rrroza

I don’t understand why designers keep doing these things in this (practically non-) color range and why people keep choosing to wear them.
The camera angle isnt doing any favors either.

    • margaret meyers

The shoes are Oscar worthy.  And fair-skinned redheads look great in black, so why did she go this way?

    • Corsetmaker

The length is bad. It’s too short. The original angle length gave the heavy bodice a bit of balance, the shorter skirt throws it all off.

    • guest2visits

Yes the black was nicer; but I think the satin top half of the beige gown wasn’t bad on Jessica. The bottom tulle looks faded and
sort of like a deflated tutu.

    • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Dollsaga

her face is very “Dior”, her dress is from the juniors section at berlington coat factory

    • boweryboy

      No.

    • littlemac8

Her make up looks beautiful…there, I’ve said something nice.

    • msdamselfly

      I Like it–looks like a ballerina

    • Louise Bryan

It’s called ballet pink, but it’s not right for Jessica, and it’s a shame they didn’t just give her the black dress.

    • quiltrx

It’s amazing how much better it looks in black!  Maybe we need to start a petition to the designers to get rid of old-bra fabrics (and those old-bra satin shoes we’ve been seeing, too!).

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’m good with the hair and the makeup, but I hate the color and the length of the dress. HATE.

    • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

It’s official: not all garments are made better by pockets.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I rather like the hair, and her makeup is gorgeous, but ugh…..that dress is an object lesson in “what not to wear for pale redheads”, and in fact might not be able to be worn by anyone at all, given all the yuck factors it’s combining in one frock.  Girl, that is NOT YOUR DRESS.

    • lilibetp

      Yeah.

    • Alyssa

Why couldn’t she have worn the black?! Keep the shoes, wear it in black, and it would have been so much better!

    • stubbornthoughts

That color is tragic. Those shoes (and Jessica) deserve better.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

her skin is so pretty.  but the length on this dress seems wrong and the way it is constructed in the bodice makes her look boxy and wide, something we all know she is NOT.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

She never knows what to do with her hair.

    • kschwarting

I dunno, I think the black is not her dress, but the nude is certainly not her color.

Such a pretty face, though–I feel like I should be pinching her cheeks like a grandma while saying that.

    • libraangel

When is the soft porn ‘Nutcracker’ coming to town?

    • kathrineb

That ‘dingy foundation garment’ color is so popular hollywoood and wont go away. MAKE IT GO AWAY.
