Jennifer Lawrence Double Shot

Posted on February 05, 2013

J Law, come on down. You’re the next contestant on The Dress is Wrong.

Jennifer Lawrence attends The Hollywood Reporter Nominees’ Night 2013 Celebrating The 85th Annual Academy Award Nominees in Beverly Hills, California in Valentino.

Valentino Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Manon Leloup (MARILYN)

Okay, first: This dress isn’t really wrong. In fact, it’s lovely. We don’t think it’s the best choice of color for a tan blonde girl, but it’s mostly working. We really do hate sounding like a broken record, but that hem length just looks awkward in pictures.

And she couldnt’ at least bring some color or contrast in with the shoe?

THIS dress, on the other hand is SO wrong:

Jennifer Lawrence attends the 85th Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in Chloé.

Chloé Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Elena Bartels (FORD)

So very, very wrong.

Put a white towel on her head and she looks like a 5-year-old, humming “Here Comes the Bride,” wrapped in a dust ruffle. And she just looks so pleased with herself, doesn’t she? Bless.

    Oh honey. No.

Isn’t Rachel Zoe her stylist? WHY DO YOU HATE JLAW, RACHEL??

    •  I was gonna say, Rachel is missing like crazy with her.

      • Sobaika

And isn’t doing too hot with Anne Hathaway either.

        • Jecca2244

I think she’s focusing too much on her line and not enough on her clients!

        • Little_Olive

She was so hesitant to have a baby, let’s not make her think motherhood stole her modjo (seems like it deed, though).

      •  Exactly.  I don’t think she knows what to do with anyone over size 0.

  • shnaggi

Make mine Towel on head Umbrella drink and a Kabana Boy

  • First dress: needed deep olive green shoes, in my opinion. And a necklace.
The second dress needs to be thrown out.

    • MilaXX

I like the idea of a deep olive shoe with that dress and agree the 2nd is beyond hope.

      • ballerinawithagun

        Agree to both of you.

    • formerlyAnon

Man, so dead on with the shoe color. I wish I could do that. I can see it once someone says it, but I can’t come up with it.

      • Aw thanks. I usually just try to pick the least prevalent color in a dress when it has a pattern, which means I’m a little matchy-match sometimes.  When I’m ambitious I’ll pick a complimentary, or split complimentary, or analogous (color wheel is your friend!)

Looking at it again, I think a metallic gold may have been an even better choice than the olive.

        • sweetestsith

Or maybe a metallic bronze? I would personally also try a muted plum, just for kicks. It might look pretty nice… Still love the idea of olive though, as long as we aren’t talking about those awful, satin, bridemaids nonsense.

          • Yeah, bronze too! I was rethinking the gold right after I commented but didn’t feel passionate enough to edit. I also think a rosey gold could be nice too, to play off her tan.

  • The funny thing is that — for me at least — objectively speaking — I know that dress #2 is bad. Take it on its own and it’s bad. But I can’t say she doesn’t look good in it. Not crazy about her lip colour, but I think she looks oddly chic in the bath towel/dust ruffle.

First dress gives pancake boobs. I think you need actual pancake boobs for it to work.

    • Kristin McNamara

I also couldn’t help thinking she looks pretty in the second dress! This is not, of course, DUE to the dress. But she looks like she got herself a fake tan between Dress #1 and Dress #2 being worn, and somehow she looks much thinner in the second than the first (not that that’s *better*… just sayin).

Also- her stance in the last photo is laughable. Shut yo legs, girlfran!

    • Airkisses

The white looks gorgeous on her! (Haha especially with the darker tan)

    • Sobaika

I think white looks good on her when she is tan, but the dress itself is bad. That lip color is worse.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

Totally agree, esp re the lip colour – it is giving me eye twitches

  • marilyn

Dress #1:  Way too long.  It would have been fine if the skirt had been shorter.

    Dress #2:  A beach coverup.

  • Imasewsure

She looks great in white… just not in that!! Hair and makeup are pretty… first dress, eh… needs to be loose and flow-y and 4-6 inches longer

  • That dress is wrong on anyone.

  • Funkykatt

We need to bring back Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style with you two as co-hosts. You can take time to go over fashion celebrity wrongs like the old Siske & Ebert movies where they had a segment called ‘Skunk of the Week’.

This dress on Jaw La is the skunk.

    • snarkykitten

I’d watch the fuck out of that!

    • kimmeister

I miss that show!  I got lots of good tips from it, such as how the body looks best when you think of it in thirds.

    • Airkisses

       JLaw. I’m concerned.

  • snarkykitten

Dress #1: her stylists need to stop putting her in dresses made for no-rack girls, or at least get her some better foundation garments
Dress #2: three words: dick pink lipstick

    • Kristin McNamara

      BAHA that’s awful!!

    • Annabelle Archer

    • formerlyAnon

You are living up to your screen name, for sure. Too bad there isn’t a nice meaty t.v. show recap today upon which you can unleash your powers.

      • snarkykitten

        aw but that’s TLO’s job!

  • The nude lip in the second look. DESTROY IT.

    • snarkykitten

oooh so that’s the polite word for that shade…

  • SugarSnap108

Is the second dress made of terrycloth?  And is it actually a dress?  I vote towel-with-built-in-dust-ruffle.

I agree that the first dress is pretty, but with her skin tone and hair color, she just looks like a solid wall of tan.  And yes, hem line is awkward.

    • Airkisses

I say ship the 2nd dress to Jennifer Aniston! She’ll have fun pretending to walk out a hotel bathroom in it!

      • Spicytomato1

Funny, I was getting a distinct Aniston vibe from her. With both dresses, actually.

        • SugarSnap108

Yes, they are both Anistonian in their ways.

  • KC

If I know anything about JLaw from her interviews I bet she is excited about Dress #2 because she can BREATHE in it.

  • kimmeister

Uh … uh … her arms look nice and toned.

That second dress looks like a shabby chic lampshade.

  • Airkisses

That first model looks like the love child of Anne Hathaway and Clare Danes

  • stubbornthoughts

She’s sooooo much prettier than that second dress. I’m loving her hair color, though. I also LOVE. HER.

  • MissMariRose

Dress #2 is probably the most expensive housedress I’ve ever seen.

While you’re runnin’ to the store, could you pick me up a pack of smokes, darlin’?

  • Airkisses

Anyone agree that her hair looks AWFUL?! I don’t normally notice
coloing, but what is with those lighter blond longer strands? Are those
extensions or just a bad dye job?

    • Mary229

It looks like she had it darker for filming Catching Fire and then they tried to put highlights in it or something?   It’s not right for her.  She looks great as a blond and great with dark hair but this inbetween doesn’t showcase her cute beauty.

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t know enough to say if it’s over-enthusiastic extensions or a hair cut shaped and colored to fall evenly around her head which she’s wonked up by pulling it all forward over her shoulders.

Either way, I noticed and judged.

  • MilaXX

The white dress is just ugly, even on the model. It looks like a beach coverup. The first dress is okay, but it would have worked better with black shoes.

  • Is Chole french for dumpy?

  • Make that a 5 yr. old girl who just wet her pants –with that stance, its the 1st thing I thought of in the last picture.  Its not JLaw’s fault totally — that dress is awful on model, too.
Lastly, could someone please verify if Rachel Zoe is really her stylist or not? Perhaps not on this outing?

  • girliecue

Jennifer Lawrence cracks me up! What, that’s NOT the response she was going for in dress #2? Oh…

  • rloliveira

Beautiful makeup in the first shot.

  • PeaceBang

That first dress is sitting way too low for a girl of her bombshell proportions. She really is an old-school bombshell. J’adore. As for the second dress, it can’t be helping that she’s standing like Ethel Merman on the cover of the “Annie Get Your Gun” Original Cast Album. On the other hand, maybe that’s intentional? Does JLaw sing?

  • Patricia Gillett

I am positive that Janet wore that exact same white dress in an episode of Three’s Company.

    • formerlyAnon

Except hers was made up in Indian cotton muslin. (is that redundant? Is there non-cotton muslin?)

  • nannypoo

Actually I hate the first dress and I think the second one is not so bad. I don’t like it, but it’s better than the first one. Lipstick would have helped, and a better pose.

    • BrooklynBomber

Agree. That first one is ugly. Whose dress would it possibly be? And the second one would be okay w/o the ruffle at the hem. And it looks better on her than on the model.

  • Call me Bee

Re: first dress.  Agreed.  Lovely dress, weird hem length–it should be either a few inches longer or shorter.  Ugly shoes.
Second dress is not only highly unflattereingm but way wrong for the season and venue.  If worn at all, it should be worn in the dead of summer, or on a tropical beach somewhere.

  • Annabelle Archer

At this point, and after all of these horrible dresses (and burn worthy pants suits) it’s time to call it—>>>>  FIRE YOUR STYLIST!!!!

  • sk8tfan

She’s a tall, healthy looking woman with a chest. Stop dressing her like Keira Knightly, as some ethereal waif.

  • PaulaBerman

I hate the nude lip on her in the second set of pictures. Color is your friend, Jen! You are cuter than all this.

  • Trisha26

Look 1: I want to pull the whole thing up 3 inches – and that would shorten the hem. Plus shoes as mentioned. Look 2: Pool/spa wrap. Awful.

  • siriuslover

yes, that second dress is horrible. just wretched. My first thought was terry cloth towel.

  • Veronica1022

Wouldn’t it be lovely if Janie Bryant dressed her one day?  Or maybe she should wear Valentino?  Valentino always seems to know what to do with boobs.

  • Please tell me she’s not inflating her lips.

  • She looks like she needs to be at home in bed. Get some rest, girl!

  • Tatiana Luján

And the lipstick on the second picture is fighting with the dress for the price of the most hideous part of her attire.

  • Janet B

First dress: She needs a dress to accommodate her bust, this isn’t it. Another color, different shoes and some jewelry would have helped too.
Second dress: If this is a towel or even a beachy look, those shoes are all sorts of wrong. That dress needs to go away until summer and then someone else should give it a try.

  • neofashionista

I think she looks Beautiful in the first dress her makeup is perfect and the dress if pretty even if the hem is less than ideal but i wholeheartedly concur about the secondary dress is as if she had the rack of Dolly and then it deflatted on the drive over to the party and this she can no longer fill her dress poor girl

  • Judy_J

    Second dress = swimsuit coverup.

  • barbarienne

I don’t think she looks at all pleased with herself. I want to put a thought-bubble that says, “So they said I should put my hands on my hips? And…smile? That’s the thing with the teeth, right?”

She and Lena Dunham are competing for “most convincing portrayal of an awkward teenager.” (Never mind that they are both in their 20s.) The only reason JLaw gets a pass and Ms. Lena doesn’t is because Jennifer is built like a typical movie star while Ms. Lena has the body of a regular person.

  • Pterodactyl111

Not to mention that miserable lipstick with the second dress. Color!! You need color!!

  • Mary229

You know, my biggest complaint here isn’t even the dresses but her posture and demeanor in the pictures.  I love Jennifer because she seems different from the average starlet.  More natural.   But here she’s doing the pose with the blank expression that I could find on almost any other young 20 something actress.

  • Part of what makes her look all wrong in the 1st dress is that HAIR.  Yes, dear, we know you have lots of luscious locks, but really, they should be tamed and corralled on occasion.  I don’t mind the second dress so much, oddly……I actually think it looks better on her than on the model.  That doesn’t make it a great dress, mind you.  And the shoes are tragic.

By the way, I don’t hear “Here Comes the Bride”.  I hear “I Enjoy Being a Girl”.  But then again, I love Rodgers & Hammerstein.

    • 3boysful

I could possibly hear that, too, but I think the girl singing that song would have on some lip COLOR.

  • 3boysful

The black pumps are SO wrong with that second dress.

Which, BTW, I owned in 1979, maroon Quiana, full-length, made by my mom.  Probably a Simplicity pattern.  Pi Phi pledge dance.

    • formerlyAnon

I had something in Qiana I no longer remember, but I remember thinking it was a b–ch to sew. The real problem was my skills were not up to it and my mom had to finish it for me. Probably why I’ve blocked out what exactly it was.

  • another_laura

Jesu Criste, JLaw, get a freaking fitting.  That first dress is lovely but it’s obviously supposed to be knee-length and high-waisted.  It therefore looks dumpy on you!

The second dress I just can’t put together words of how awful that is.  yeeeeks!

  • Carrieanno

Isn’t this girl recovering from pneumonia?

  • RocknRollmom

I have issues with both dresses.  The first dress could be lovely on someone else, but the proportions between top (pancake boobs required) and bottom (the weight of all the embroidery etc and the length make it look very heavy and dragging down the top).  Wrong color for Ms. Lawrence.  Second dress is all kinds of horrible.  It looks cheap, the shoes are wrong, it is a beach coverup and has no business on the RC.  And she knows it.  Look at her eyes—they are not matching her smiles.

  • TSkot

The second dress looks like she wandered into a reception on her way back to her room from the pool.

  • The makeup they’re doing for her is starting to make her look like Lindsay Lohan around the eyes. I’m sure her schedule is exhausting at this season, but she is really starting to look burned out…I hope that’s just cosmetic.

  • prettybigkitty

    Cool blue ring.  Amiright?!

  • Elleachaudaucul

Dress no. 2 is so ugly that I’m surprised Stella McCartney wasn’t involved.

  • decormaven

If there’s a “professional” stylist overseeing these looks, he/she is pulling off the biggest fraud of the century. That first look is improperly fitted- the chest is sitting almost at the waist! And black pumps with that too-casual, inappropriate white hankie tied into a coverup? That’s style on crack, and crack is whack!

Why are so many lady stars dressed like it is June this January?  I don’t want to be a “seasonal stick in the mud” but there is just something off about a lot of the looks we are seeing this winter.  ODD……

  • I love her deeply and irrationally and I want better for her than these.

  • i actually dont hate the 2nd look. the 1st one should only be worn by dark-haired women.

  • Little_Olive

Nothing on the hair?? It’s I think the worst I’ve seen in a while.

The dresses may be 1) pretty 2) tolerable, but the styling, especially the shoe pairing, is absolutely tragic.

  • snarkalicious

Honestly, girl’s gotta be exhausted at this point.  Maybe she’s just throwing in the towel (haha) and grabbing the first dress off the rack for these ridiculous shindigs.

  • Julie Parr

She looks amazing in both. Settle down.

  • Le_Sigh

what the eff is with that wonder woman pose at the end?  so very very awkward.

    •  Makes a nice change from the gotta-pee post though.

  • AnaRoW

I’m going to be contrary here.  I like dress #2 much more than #1. The first one looks like something you can find just about anywhere and the pattern is ugly.  The second one at least has some interest although it would be much better suited to a tropical vacation than the red carpet.

  • Jecca2244

    That stance! Oh boy. literally.

  • poggi

While the first look doesn’t particularly flatter her figure, the second look completely makes her curves disappear.  Given her figure I wouldn’t have thought it was possible.

  • kolokOlchik

Her face is really good in the second one.  And I like the hair.

  • Yep! Towel was my first thought on that second dress… awful!

  • Cathy S

I love that first dress, but the color doesn’t seem right for her. That second dress is terrible.

  • Is she already done with Hunger games? I thought she’d just gone back to the dark hair.

  • formerlyAnon

1st dress: a couple of inches shorter and real shoes – not those anonymous things which aren’t even properly anonymous because they are so close-to-matching-but-not-really the dress that it is making me batty. And I have infinitesimally little fashion OCD. Also, could appreciate it better in July. I really like the fabric in that dress.

2nd dress: um, well. The young and lovely who have hairdressers and makeup people on call have to wear dresses like that. Because think how odd and schlumpy someone less aesthetically blessed would look>

  • i *really* like what’s going on with her hair.  if i wanted to go lighter, i’d clip this photo (dated reference…) and show it to my colorist.

  • She’s so adorable when she gets it wrong. Like she’s still an unborn fawn yet to be a starved and skilled pose whipper.

  • I just glimpsed the price tag on that Valentino dress in the latest edition of Neiman Marcus’ Book.  Whoa.  For that amount of money you could put a downpayment on a house, purchase a car, pay for a year’s college tuition… Yowza.  The fact that it doesn’t look like it costs tens of thousands of dollars on the red carpet is a testament to what a dud it is on Jennifer Lawrence.

  • tallgirl1204

The fabric in the first dress is so, so beautiful.  I’m not a fan of the beige dress, but I can forgive this one for the lovely lovely pattern and texture.

  • Emmyllou

At least she looks better than the model. Yeesh!

  • lrhg

Girl, go take a nap please. She looks 1000x times better than I would pneumonia but I feel bad for her just looking at her. She looks so tired.

  • Robin Krug

She must have a severe case of shoe blindness. Of these two looks, the white dress with the black satin pumps is the more egregious.

  • MoHub

How appropriate! I immediately reacted to the combinations of the “Double Shot” title and the view of JLaw’s baby heads in a single glance! Good thing I wasn’t sipping my coffee.

  • teensmom99

OK, sometimes you guys are just so perfect that you are perfect.  I bow to you!

  • A.

Good lord, if the masses are going to insist we look at this girl can they at least show her how to pose in front of a camera!? Or hell, NOT POSE and at least look comfortable for once! Just seems like to much potential but not an ounce of charm.

  • m0r0

Love the first dress but agree in principle. Second dress……AGREED. Hideous! Even on the runway model. BLECH.

  • She’s gorgeous, and it’s obvious someone is spending a lot of time trying to put her together, so why does she always look so rumpled and wrong?

  • 1st dress, fine. 2nd dress, totally darling. Little-girlish, but not cloyingly. More like a little tom-boy girl. She should be playing outside in the lemon tree with her siblings on a beautiful Los Angeles summer day.

  • libraangel

Agree totally T&L. Beautiful all over in first dress: hair make-up exquisite.Second Oh My NO: Hair grungy, crazy wonky sewing especially the bodice! Looks like a worst look on PR

  • bitchybitchybitchy

That second dress looks like the result of a particularly unfortunate PR challenge:  Designers, we are giving  you all white queen-size behsheets. You have two hours.Make it work.

  • chitowndg

I love the first dress on the runway. I am getting so irked by apparent “loaner” dresses that are not altered.

  • Anniebet

I adore the first dress so much I’m willing to forgive the length and plastic shoes. When I saw the second dress elsewhere I thought “OMG, wait til T-Lo get ahold of this one!” Indeed.

    • libraangel

And wait til JLo gets hold of this one since all she dresses in is white lately. EEEKKKK!

  • xmixiex

this girl… I LOVE her, she’s so beautiful, why can’t she just dress well?!

  • guest2visits

I like the first dress for her, hem length and all.  The second dress looks like a cheap beach cover-up.

  • Uriah Romero

Jennifer Lawrence looked amazing in the white dress. I
can’t wait to see her on the Academy Awards next weekend. The only thing that
stinks is that I won’t be able to see the show live since I’ll be working late
at DISH that night. I am glad that during prime time, my DISH Hopper DVR will
use the PrimeTime Anytime feature to automatically record all four major local
networks, so it will be waiting for me to get home. When it’s enabled, I am
able to record up to six shows at once during prime time, so it’s rare for me
to miss one of  my favorite programs.

  • Alyssa

I think JLaw is still off her game from the pneumonia…that’s what I want to think anyway. Although the first dress is gorgeous, just not for her coloring.

  • lilazander

She looks old and used up; AWFUL… And both takes as that.
