Jada Pinkett Smith in NYC

Posted on February 28, 2013

Y’know, we should, by all rights, absolutely hate this, but we don’t:

Jada Pinkett Smith out an about in New York City.

Les Chiffoniers Neon-trimmed Drawstring Leather Pants

Nicholas Kirkwood Neon Printed Silk-satin Pumps

First things first: We saw Jada in person at Fashion Week and without sounding like celebrity apologists, we’ll just say we were struck by how much softer she looks in person. She photographs very severe but she doesn’t really look like that in real life. Whippet-thin, of course; like most celebs, but striking and pretty in a way her pictures don’t always show.

Second point: LOVE those shoes, girl. In fact, it’s the shoes – and that chic, stiff, coat – that really make this look for us. The former are fun and eye-catching, and the latter gives the look some fashion-cred. It also helps counteract…

Third point: THE DRAWSTRING PANTS. But we’re gonna have to say we don’t actually mind them all that much. She did what she had to do to make them work and make them look chic instead of downscale. For a “street” outfit, this is all working for us. Yes, even the drawstring, neon-striped pants.

Oh, this is fun!  It’s funky rich bitch casual and I like it. And I’m not just saying that because she scares me and strikes me as the “I’ll cut a bitch” type.

  • The matchiness of the shoes is making my head explode (but I can sign off on the rest of it).

    •  With this outfit I’d argue that matchy is lightyears ahead of almost-matchy, which would have moved the outfit into Tragic territory.

    • Louise Bryan

I love those shoes, which is really saying something because I don’t generally get excited by stilletos, but these are adorable.

  • Dayum but I want a coat like that.
    (running to work room,…..)

  • lindsmh

    Neon-trimmed Drawstring Leather Pants. No.
    Love the shoes, though.

    • kimmeister

Holy crap, I didn’t even realize they were leather.  I think these are the first baggy leather pants I’ve ever seen!

      • Louise Bryan

I’m not sure, but I think maybe just the stripe is leather, or maybe pleather, or just vinyl.

        • julesj

Yes, I am wondering about specifically what is leather on the pants. The actual pant itself does not look like leather.

  • I could cope with the pants for “street”, I don’t mind the shoes, but I do not like those pants with those shoes. And the jacket is edging towards Theo Huxtable for me.

    • Introspective

I think you mean gordon gartrelle 😉

But to me she looks fab!! Easy and spring appropriate which makes me happy & give me something to look forward to… Especially with the thawing thats finally starting to kick in for nyc.

  • LadyCelia

    Those shoes!  I die!

  • wouldn’t you love to be one of those women who leaves the house looking like this on a daily basis? so polished and put together.

    • formerlyAnon

Only if I had considerable staff to take care of all the details for me. There are not enough hours left in my life to put in the time to pull that off solo.

    • MRC210

Especially since the whole outfit is refrigerator-door white.  It’s like the all-white furniture in a shelter mag photo.  I can’t look without thinking How do they do it?  I would need a staff of minions to keep my wardrobe clean.  Of course, I suppose she’s only walking from doorway to limo to doorway but still.  I’d be covered with coffee and random street grime by the time I reached the car.

      Aborable shoes.

  • RescueMe23

In the first picture I thought the yellow stripe was a cane…and I said “what happened to Jada!?!”  Like I know her…
    Anyway – I like it!

  • TSkot

A great summer outfit, but isn’t it still February in New York?

    • anne.landre

Nothing screams, “I don’t ever actually TOUCH the street, bitches” like this outfit.

  • shirab

In that outfit, it certainly helps to be whippet-thin. I can’t imagine a combination of adjectives more unflattering than “drawstring leather” to describe pants. Except “white drawstring leather.”

  • mhleta

I’m nuts about this entire look. This would be a great travel outfit, too. How often does comfortable, chic, casual and upscale show up for the same outfit? And my undying respect goes to anyone who can wear white in the city and not come up looking like a dirty ashtray after 15 minutes.

  • She’s working those pants. I love it.

  • IAmJ

Kind of like the coat and really like the shoes. The pants are hurting me, but overall it’s not a horrible look. It’s an awfully big bag for a teeny lady like herself.

  • Sara__B

She looks great, but I’m not going to try this in my life. I’d look like an idiot.

  • My GOD, I want those shoes.

  • champagnesocialist

    That matte crocodile Birkin.   Amazing!

  • formerlyAnon

I’m glad she looks softer in person. Because I usually think things about her photos that I have to edit lest I cross a line.

I like this, whether it’s the loose hair or the loose clothing, her usual air of teeth-clenched over-intensity is absent and she looks like an in-charge woman ready to laugh or to kick ass & take names, as the situation dictates.

  • twocee

    Drawstring. LEATHER. Pants.

No, I just can’t.  I’m getting flashbacks to Ross.

    • At least these look loose enough to pull off without baby powder or lotion or a baby-powder-lotion paste.

      • ashtangajunkie

If the paste matches the pants, you can make yourself a pair of paste pants and no one will know the difference! 🙂

  • EEKstl

I love this.  And the shoes should immediately be beamed into my closet.  At once.

  • AthenaJ

    EBTP! (everything but the pants)

  • golden_valley

Love the shoes with the pants.  They make sense together.  The jacket is too big and diverts the eye from what’s good about the outfit.

  • Le_Sigh

And they’re LEATHER drawstring pants too!  I likes!

  • butterflysunita

No, I can’t get behind this.  Those pants are $1000 and she looks like she’s running around in sweat pants.

  • Sue_Asponte

I always think she looks amazing and this is pretty much a WERQ for me. No problem with the pants — leather’s hard to wear but she looks amazingly tough and awesome in these.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I absolutely hate this outfit for you. As for looking severe in photos, if I had her crazy thin bod, I’d be happy to look severe- she’s in phenomenal shape.

  • peachy

dang…drawstring LEATHER pants?? dafuq? but you’re right, those shoes are all kinds of fierce. good to know she’s a bit softer in person; her photos are harsh harsh harsh.

  • peachy

    ugh. double post. apologies.

  • lamamu

Total WERQ on her…and only her.

  • I dig this, but I wish she hadn’t picked a satin white top too. That’s a lot of white in ever-so-slightly different shades. I don’t mind the drawstring pants, but I also don’t understand how you make LEATHER drawstring pants.
Also, I love her because she half looks like she’s stifling laughter while trying to give imperious Earth Kitt face. Cute.

  • tereliz

I love this whole look. Girlfriend is fierce! But funky. I love the proportions here (except for the valise-sized bag. yikes), and how confident she looks. Could have used a bolder lippy, imo (her face looks oddly underdone over all that white), but still, she looks great!

  • love it

  • I’m shocked to say that I like this look too. I WANT those shoes, but the whole look is fierce.

  • nannypoo

I love everything about this outfit and would love to wear it myself. It’s interesting and fabulous.

  • Judy_J

Those shoes are works of art!

  • neofashionista

Neon Draw String Elastic Waste Leather Track Pants
Sue Sylvester is about the only other person who could wear those except Jada of course

  • insertclevername_ici

I can’t with the pants. I just can’t. or really the shirt for that matter. I just don’t like the athleticism of the pants and the shirt paired with the chicness of the jacket and the heels. I don’t mind the all white, it just seems like the pieces don’t go at all.

  • Indigo54

  • BayTampaBay

What is wrong with her face?

Is it just the angle of the pictures?

  • Indigo54

Is that Willow in the background?  I think it is.  Wow, she looks almost like a normal teenager for once.

    • Yes I want to scroll to the right and see her!.

      • mellbell

My first thought upon seeing these pictures was “Too bad we can’t see more of Willow’s outfit.”

    • formerlyAnon

Is it? She may well be towering over her mom before it’s through, then, because they look to be the same height and Willow is 12, if I remember right.

      • Indigo54

Yes, Willow is tall like her dad.  Looks like him too.

  • carolynmo

Love everything but those pants. That coat is fabulous and I want it. She rocks the “She Who Must Be Obeyed” look, doesn’t she?

  • homofascist

Honestly I like the top half and I like the bottom half – a LOT – but I really, really don’t like them together.  The top half feels really formal, and the bottom half is more fun/casual.  I feel like they each need different mates.  Am I crazy?  Keep in mind I really don’t like white, and I cannot possibly imagine walking around in NYC for more than 2 minutes in that much white without some big stain magically appearing.

  • MilaXX

Love the entire look and I’ve liked Jada since her Different World days.

  • alyce1213

That’s a really, really nice pair of drawstring pants — definitely a high ticket item, well cut, and properly slouchy on her thin body.
I get the irony and I think she looks great.
In addition to the amazing shoes, she is accessorized perfectly; I love what’s on her wrists and neck.

And notice — she’s NOT DOING THE HANDBAG HOLD.

This is a Jada WERQ for me, because I’m often frightened by her appearance and what she wears.

I agree it’s never a good thing to think that rules can’t be broken.

  • kimmeister

Is that her black bra peeking out of the deep vneck?

  • Trisha26

That’s okay, TLo, you can like it, I’ll hate it for you. Do love the shoes though – with a black dress, I’m there!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Photos just don’t do her face justice, do they?

  • warnerave

that yellow stripe is just so random..not loving the outfit..is she attending a karate class?

  • that’s ok, i can hate it enough for all of us. i do like the shoes though.

  • l_c_ann

Silly shoes, really silly leather (!) pants.
White on the street in winter….must be nice to have private transportation.

  • KayEmWhy

Sorry, nothing but the shoes and too much hair.

  • BrooklynBomber

Fabulous shoes. I don’t mind the rest.

ETA: Those pants are leather? That’s really weird. Okay, I like the coat and the shoes, and maybe the top. Baggy leather drawstring pants – just wrong.

  • GorgeousThings

Meh. Glad to hear she looks softer in person, because those cheekbones look like they would cut a bitch.

  • chitowndg

Like it. I would like it better on April 1.

  • ashtangajunkie

I enjoy this, and I love that coat.

  • Imasewsure

This is an awesome outfit and she looks great (and she is one of those fashionistas who I never like!). Fun rich girl chic

  • Did no one mention how delightfully normal Willow looks in the background?

  • libraangel

I also like this, but I feel like I shouldn’t

  • decormaven

It works, because she is WORKING it. That is what a sense of style does. And dayum, those shoes! Hope they appear in another look, they are fab.

  • iheartbuffy

I feel like Michael Jackson wore this at some point.

  • glennethph

The shoes are the best thing about this.  And whatever you say, they are still drawstring pants.

  • tired_mommy

I think she looks tough because she’s freezing! Look how warmly everyone around her is dressed. Perfect for LA in Feb, but seems odd for NY.

  • how did she get the lettering off that “caution-crime scene-do not cross” tape?  and, drawstring white leather pants…who thought that was a good idea?  hella cute shoes, though.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    this is kind of fierce.

  • Lilithcat

    Those shoes!  Such fun!

  • bertkeeter

Good look on her. I thought it was WINTER in NYC?

    • lobsterlen

Its cold here. Not as cold as its been but still cold. I am sure she has a car waiting for her but look at everyone around her  … all bundled up. I am getting cold just looking at her.

  • Zippypie

The shoes and coat are fierce.  Those pants are pretty godawful.

  • Rand Ortega

This look says: “I’m chillin’ but I still look like MONEY!”
Head to toe I love it.

  • kindwordsonly

It’s very chic. Strange that so many of he red carpet looks seem clenched and forced but this ‘simple’ look works so well.

  • kategs

But they’re leather drawstring pants!  I love this look, it’s a breath of neon daffodil and she looks so chic.

  • OrigamiRose

I must have those shoes in my collection.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Human police tape.

  • Synnamin

That’s ok. I can hate it for you.

Neon. Striped. Drawstring. Leather. Pants. I had to repeat this over and over, just to try to grasp it.

  • Lisa_Cop

Agree with everything you said. And LOVE the shoes; I want those shoes.

  • Actually, for some reason, it’s the shirt that’s not working for me.  I dig the leather draw string pants and the coat but the shirt makes it too sloppy.

  • And it all fits, the hems are at the perfect length; she is wearing a voluminous coat and yet it does not overwhelm her tiny (5 foot) frame.  Once again the goddess of proportion kills it.  She really know what she’d doing when it comes to fit.

  • I will hate it for you. Only the shoes get a pass here.

  • Little_Olive

    But it is february.

  • If anybody could make this work, it is she. Looks classy, not downscale. What is it Nina always says: “It looks expensive.” Highest compliment possible.

  • guest2visits

The shoes are cool – but I see nothing good about the flappy white sheet or hospital srubs.

  • ccm800

Agreed – glad to hear about  her in person softness because she’s looking like an extra from the live action grinch movie here.

  • littlemac8

Wait, in what universe is a satin coat daytime casual?  I cannot!

  • shelley514

Why she let a doctor cut on her face, I’ll never understand.

  • Callie
