IN or OUT: Solange Knowles in Sportmax

Posted on February 05, 2013

We want to be open-minded, but we’re pretty sure Solange failed to pull this one off:

Solange Knowles attends the Audi Forum New Orleans at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, Louisiana in a Sportmax white leather jacket and Skirt.

Sportmax Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Meghan Collison

We like the idea of it more than the actuality of it. That grey-white looks great on her and we appreciate the choosing of pieces that are fairly unconventional for the red carpet. There’s something cool and chic trying to happen here. We’re just not convinced it’s happening. Maybe if the skirt didn’t look so gigantic. Or if she hadn’t worn such dainty shoes with such a substantial outfit. Maybe it just can’t be saved, kittens. Maybe we’re being too grumpily conventional. It’s up to you to decide.

Vote Now!

IN! Lighten up, bitches!

OUT! She needs to go down about 3 sizes and then we can talk.

Kerry Washington’s creamy confection was voted IN by the Only-Slightly Bitter Kittens.

    OUT.  That outfit is unsalvageable.

    • another_laura

I’m with you.  That’s a runway-only outfit.  It’s a look, but not for ladystars on the red carpet.

    • NMMM: Not Made for Mortals.  If Solange can’t pull off that skirt, it can’t be done.  The runway model isn’t doing it noticeably better.  Out.

      • Jessica Rowe

        AGREED. OUT.  For Editorials only.

    •  Agree – that’s no one’s look.  Boxy unflattering mess. However I DO love her hair & makeup!

  • jilly_d

OUT. but GAWD, is her skin color divine!

  • She looks better than the model though.  It’s like a bad tennis outfit.

    • Agreed. This just doesn’t work; but it works much better on Solange than on the model. She’s probably the only woman who could come “almost close” with this get-up.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Wrong shoes, wrong lip, wrong camera angle.

    • Ms. Schmidt

All I can see is that hideous lip color.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It’s just too big on her.  And what is the deal with these thick ankle straps?  Does anyone think those are a good idea?

  • LongTall_Sally

OUT.  She’d be IN if only her top half was considered, but unfortunately for her the bottom half of this outfit is not her friend.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT. I’m getting flashes of the Big Suit from “Stop Making Sense”

    • Rand Ortega

I was just about to post. The. Exact. Same. Thing!

  • BLECH out scrolled right down to vote did not even read commentary.

  • OUT. I think the individual pieces could work, but I’m not loving them together.

  • out

  • This one might be a unanimous OUT.

  • Or maybe it’s just that shade of fuchsia on her lips.  OUT!

  • Karen Maslowski

Yikes! The skirt must be a size too small, to gape open that way. It makes her hips look the size of Bolivia.

Definitely out. The jacket is cool, though.

  • Out, it’s hideous, no one could wear that, it doesn’t even work on the model.

  • Paola Quintero

    OUT- the shoes ruined it.

  • sablehunter

Some free outfits should just stay in the box.  OUT.

  • Out. If it fit her, it would be an in. But that just looks like she wrapped a couple pieces of leather around herself and called it a day.

  • Out. The potential for a cool, different outfit was there, but it just doesn’t come together, either on Solange or on the model.

  • Janet B

  • that was OUT on the model.  the proportions are horrible, not helped by the wishy-washy shoes.

  • Lilithcat

    And you would be right.

  • odd for the sake of odd.  out.

It doesn’t even look good on the model. Definately OUT.

  • ellabob

Shoes – wrong…. and the whole outfit looks too big – maybe if a size smaller?

  • Out. This reminds me of old school nuns’ habits that were purposely meant to distort a woman’s natural shape because Original Sin. She’s brave to try it, but I think this get up was beyond saving.

  • Miguel Molina

She looks like a baby (An actual toddler. Swimming in her baptism robes).

  • tallgirl1204

It looks bad on the model.  Anything that makes a skinny-skinny look like a linebacker is probably not going to flatter anyone, not even someone so beautiful as Miss. S.

    • mellorcr

Yup, when a model can’t even pull it off, that’s a sign it’s not going to work!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Linebacker was the first thought I had … OUT.

  • I think either the jacket or the skirt in this instance. The pieces are both uncoventional and related to each other so i think its too much interest and not enough contrast (that sounds a bit contradictory) so out

  • Sobaika

This pains me… but it’s an OUT.

  • fringebenefit

OUT. What an awkward, self-conscious affectation. To her credit she comes close to pulling it off, but it couldn’t be done.

  • Allison Harris

OUT! That skirt looks like she forgot her pants, but shoved 2 pieces of poster board under her shirt as a last-minute replacement. Top half would be cute if the jacket weren’t ginormous.

  • CoCoTutt

Only on the runway can you ignore things like proportion.  In the real world, even superstars with fabulous bods MUST keep proportion in mind…at all times. OUT.

  • l_c_ann

  • ojosazules

    So out.

  • mjude

  • Sara__B

I do so enjoy Solange and her red carpet ensembles, but this is an OUT.

  • not voting. but she looks real fresh and pretty from the neck up!

  • rumcg66

  • Beth G

OUt.  I’m not sure that outfit would work on ANYONE

  • stagmania

    OUT. A big old nothing.

  • Julie Fountain

Out. That outfit is awful even on the runway.  It looks like it was made for someone 3 times larger and refitted with safety pins or duct tape or something.

  • MsBusy

Out. Not sure anyone could wear this and make it look acceptable.

  • filmcricket

From the neck up and the knees down she looks amazing. But the ensemble’s an OUT.

  • Eva_baby

OUT.  To be fair it is an ugly outfit on anyone,  But her skin and hair are just fab.

  • B_C_J

OUT! It looks ridiculously oversized and it looks no better on the model. It looks like this is made of leather for furniture because it certainly does not look supple. She is very beautiful but her looks cannot save this ugly outfit.

  • cbt22

My eyes can’t make sense of what they’re seeing. Is it too big? Is it too small? Was she caught in flagrante delicto and ran out of the house wearing nothing but her boyfriend’s jacket and two pieces of strategically placed cardboard?

  • This is so OUT that I don’t really think I need to explain.

  • MarissaLG

    Sorry to say, OUT.

  • it’s solange. it’s chic. it’s IN. IN. IN. IN. IN.

  • RebeccaKW

Out.  It looks odd and too big on the model.

  • NC_Meg

OUT. From the neck up, she looks great. From the neck down, I can’t tell what on earth is happening.

  • Tamara Hogan

The model failed to pull it off, too.

  • tereliz

Hesitant out. I think the jacket is salvageable, but the rest is dreck. Are those the same shoes JHud wore to sing the Star Spangled Banner?

  • It’s that stupid skirt that cannot be saved.  She is wearing it as well as anyone would be able to.

  • Carly Warnock

Out. I actually thought the ankle strap was a bit too big for the outfit. Hmm.

  • nannypoo

I doesn’t work for the model either. Let’s face it: it’s a shitty outfit.

  • Snailstsichr

OUT. Don’t like the shoes or lipstick with it, but mainly I just don’t like it.

  • rtuko

too boxy. You’re right, it almost works.

  • That outfit is a joke, right?  It’s a little “daughter Judy!” for my taste.  And the shoes are too much like ankle shackles.  Hate that wide strap in that place.

    • kschwarting

Yes, very “Jetsons.”  It makes this lovely woman look huge.  Great hair and makeup, though.

  • Jangle57

Doesn’t look any better on the model.  Yuck.  OUT

  • BrooklynBomber

I like the top half (except for the blinding glare coming off that lipstick).  I think she looks great in the jacket. Better with a pair of jeans or solid colored pants, though. With the skirt, the proportions are off. Better on the model (where more skirt is showing below the jacket), but still not great. Top half in, bottom half out. It’s a draw.

ETA: Oh, geez, I just saw the shoes. I’m going to start a new non profit called UnShankle Me: Toward a world without shackle ankle straps.

  • Joyce VG

    IN! I love the jacket.

  • ringthing

She is so gorgeous but I have to vote this an OUT. I don’t care if it is New Orleans, her legs look cold.

  • Pants_are_a_must

OUT. I would argue even the color isn’t working for her.

  • I’m guessing it is a nod to the rap/hip hop fashion thing of oversized clothes. Very TLC. Never has been too flattering.

  • Out. Solange tried her hardest but that outfit is just bad. Hair and make up are fab tough.

  • nnbb

    Out. Hideous. Ridiculous. Huge.

  • Out. Especially with those nearly-nonexistent shoes.

  • Super_Red

oh goodness out. I loved the top half and then I scrolled down and the bottom half is so bad it’s gotta be an out.

  • deliadee

I love her but this isn’t working.  The outfit is too big and obscures her shape.  The shoes are flat out wrong.  Out, sorry Solange, you usually nail it.

  • Trisha26

    OUT. And ankle shackles again…

  • kimmeister

She looks from the waist up, but everything below that renders this an OUT.

  • Ceur

Out, but I still want to be her.

  • MilaXX

OUT Winter up top, summer on the bottom.

  • samo_samo

OUT…the outfit especially the skirt just isn’t working which is sad because her hair and skin are gorgeous.

  • Louise Bryan

Ugh.  OUT.  I see nothing redeeming about her outfit, which is a shame, because she can bring it.  I’m afraid she may have taste issues.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out, as you said, 3 sizes smaller would be perfection.

  • formerlyAnon

Out, but it’s not remotely her fault.

It looks bulky, oversized and as someone has already said “like a bad tennis outfit” on the model.  Total designer WTF moment. No shoes could save it, though some platform basketball shoes would be in the spirit of things.

  • Merneith

Out. Refugee Bridal is a tough one to crack.

  • Sally Brownson

Out. She should’ve picked the dress OR the jacket- together they just look huge, overwhelmingly so.

  • marilyn

OUT.  Skirt too big, whole thing too boxy.

  • subwaycars

OUT. Ugh, that is a mess.

  • ashtangajunkie

Out. From the neck up, she’s beyond fabulous, but everything below the neck is pure fug.

  • conniemd

Out. The skirt is just weirdly shaped. Jacket a bit cray-cray, but with a different skirt it could work.

  • unbornfawn

At least she is wearing a jacket in February. The fit is terrible. And I am so over white in February. OUT.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  Very ugly outfit.  Though Solange looks way, way better than the model, she’s still not pulling it off.

  • Only the tall and willowing can pull this one off.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

It looks fresh and modern–In. Lighten up, bitches!

  • Judy_S

Well, the outfit is ugly and I think it is designed to look as if it is 3 sizes too big. On the other hand, she looks as good as it is humanly possible to look while wearing it. Lower-case in.

  • In_Stitches

Looks like she’s wearing her boyfriend’s jacket and, from a distance, his gym shorts.  Great for a run to pick up some milk after a night of shagging, but under any other circumstances, big NOPE.

  • I love me some Solange, but not even her fabulosity can help that outfit.

  • The outfit is just ugly — on her, on the model, just ick. OUT.

  • libraangel

Well, er…ah, I like her lip color. Nothing else. Paratrooper on top, rollerskater skirt (doesn’t even look the runway model: Solange’s seems weirdly stretched out), beautiful but inappropriate shoes. So can’t go by lip-color alone, so OUT

  • SRQkitten

OUT. That outfit is wretched and the lipstick makes me shudder.

    That is no one’s outfit.

  • It’s not her fault the outfit has no idea what it wants to be in terms of proportion.  Solange: IN.  Sportsmax: OUT.

  • OUT. I can’t figure out what this outfit is trying to do, exactly.

  • margaret meyers

why would you even want to’pull this off?”  these clothes are stupid.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I like the color and everything above the neck. Otherwise, it’s just too huge and kind of proportionately weird.

  • Looks like a smock to use for clay molding

  • barbarienne

Not working on the model, either. It’s just too damn big and chunky all over. One can get away with part of an outfit being a funny proportion, but this is too much.

  • neofashionista

  • LaSylphide

OUT. Nobody could pull off that abomination. It doesn’t even fit the model.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

in my imaginary hundred acre woods, i am pretending that her sister was mad at having to share the stage with these two backup singers and is taking out on her little sister by not letting her wear crazy, cracked out deliciousness this week.

  • Judy_J

The head and shoulders photo is fabulous, but everything below that looks awful. OUT.

  • outtttt how does she look washed out in white

  • I don’t know. Maybe it’s the wine but I think it’s kinda cool. I vote in (even though I will probably be outvoted.)

  • fursa_saida

If she lost the jacket altogether, maybe she could do something with the skirt. It’s hard to be sure, since I can’t see it under The Jacket That Ate New Orleans.

  • altalinda

I applaud the effort at unconventional, but it’s out.  It’s too bulky, especially the flaring skirt.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • momogus

Out. I think you need to be 7 feet tall and weigh 3 pounds for it to look proportional or elegant.

  • kikisayshi

This does a lot more for her than it does for the model, but it’s just not at all flattering. OUT

  • kaycem

as it’s solange there is no such thing as “not” working — IN because i can. *maniacal laugh*

  • up with pod people

I think it’s working as intended, it’s just buttfuck ugly. She is glorious, though.

  • out. that is a mess.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It’s ugly on the teensy model, even a demi-goddess like Solange can’t pull it off. OUT.

  • TSkot

Waist up would be an IN, but that skirt makes the whole thing one big OUT.

  • PeaceBang

She looks great (well, that L’Oreal 1983 Flashback Fuschia lippy needs some moderating) but the outfit is so very OUT. The proportions are ridiculous and it’s all over the place. I hate it on the model even more.

  • fiestyfashionfem

Yeah, the outfit sucks but she is so frakkin’ fabulous.  I’m gonna say “IN” because she is fearless and takes great fashion risks.

  • julnyes

If the skirt wasn’t so out of proportion this would squeak by, but with the poor fit, bad shoe choice and wonky lip color it is an OUT.

  • OUT.  and i’m *really* not a fan of those shoes.

  • bringbackbeatles

OUT! The skirt is awful on her and only slightly better on the model. On her it just looks like it’s made of cardboard and flares out too much. I like the zipper placement, although it’s not as if it has never been done before. I think the jacket culd have something, but I don’t like how oversized it is. It looks kind of sloppy to me. The shoes are dead wrong. Ankle straps are just making her legs look shorter and I’m ot convinced black was the right choice. Love the big smile, the brigt lip, and the fierce hair.

  • TieDye64

    Big and baggy mess…no.

  • OUT. It looks like one of those concept pieces that’s supposed to imply new lines for actual wearing, except they just took it straight from the runway and put it on a normal-sized person, which, no.

  • Scroll down fun. (Sorry, wrong blog.) OUT!

  • Kirsten Kirsten

Everything north of the neck and south of the knees is gorgeous. In between, however doesn’t work. Chunky and unflattering, and too sporty for the red carpet. OUT

  • RzYoung

IN, i like it, i like the over size

  • decormaven

Out. It would be a Herculean task to pull this look off; even a fashion goddess like Solange is struggling under the weight.

  • E. D.

OUT.  Maybe with fierce shoes and a longer skirt.  Love the hair and makeup though.

  • IN if she is on her way to tennis.

  • mmc2315

I’m wringing my hands now.  Tired of making excuses.  I haven’t liked dear Solange’s picks for months now.

  • Lilak

    NHL Femme.

  • jw_ny

It’s all just so baggy….which is what the designer oddly intended, as seen on the model.  If it were more fitted, it’d probably be really chic.

  • The jacket is amazing.  IN, even though I wish the jacket had been worn with something a little more conventional.

  • She looks like the Incredible Shrinking Woman in this. She should take this outfit and put it in the disposal with Lily Tomlin.

  • Beardslee

    out out out!

  • 4JJ

OUT on the total look. But keep the jacket and pair it with a fitted tee, skinny jeans and a full shoe or non-chunky boot, and it would be IN. It does look even worse on the model, though.

  • lrober03

OUt.  The color looks great, but the proportions of the outfit would only work in a carefully styled editorial

  • Cathy S

Why would anyone want to wear that?

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. The only part I like is the lipstick.

  • Girl, there’s no need to wear bigger clothes to feel skinny. You ARE skinny. Out.

  • BrightsideSusan

It’s not her – it’s that ridiculous outfit.

  • mhlmh

out. it looks like she stole venus or serena’s wimbledon whites.

  • jmorino08

Out! The proportions on that outfit would not work on anyone! Hideous!

  • oohsparkley!

  • shayna61

  • Jessica O’Connell

OUT. Just no. Put it away and never let it come back out again.

  • Beverly Kozma

No wonder it didn’t work!  It’s ugly.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Weird. Clunky. No.

  • chitowndg

Out: It looks too big on the model too.  Bad jacket.

  • Anniebet

Out. She looks like the Pillsbury Dough Boy without the rolls. And, I’m sorry, I wish I could like her hair, but for me it seems to do nothing to enhance her beautiful facial features.

  • librarygrrl64

OUT. But I think I would say that no matter who was wearing it. It’s interesting as a piece of structural art, but not very wearable.

  • It widens her, but otherwise average…

  • lalahartma

  • lilazander

It’s as ugly on her as it is on the model. OUT.
