IN or OUT: Mila Kunis in Atelier Versace

Posted on February 28, 2013

We’re not feeling this:

Mila Kunis attends the premiere of ‘Oz The Great And Powerful’ in Moscow, Russia in an custom Atelier Versace dress.

It’s not awful. And she obviously has the bod for the dress. In fact, we’re impressed with its ability to make her look tall and long-legged.

But we don’t know, you guys… we’re just so burnt out on strapless gowns with thigh-high slits. We feel there should be a law banning both them and poufy princess gowns for at least 4 weeks following the Oscars to give fashion commenters a time to catch their breath and find their centers again. For the good of the country.

Also: we pretty much hate the color scheme here, which looks like ’80s 5-star hotel lobby upholstery. Also-also: her makeup is so harsh that it’s altering the shape of her face.

Bring it on home, kittens. The final word on this one is up to you, but we’re fighting yawns.

Vote Now!

IN! What’s your problem, bitches? She looks FIERCE.

OUT! Jessica Rabbit, Russian Edition.

Salma Hayek’s puffy-sleeved doll dress did not captivate the Bitter Kittens, who voted it OUT.

  • IN. Her hair is amazing and I love the shape of the dress. I have a feeling the color looks better in person, though. She’s like a brunette Veronica Lake.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i’m seeing 80’s hotel bedspread to go with that lobby upholstery…OUT

  • In; but agreed about her resemblance to hotel upholstery. Someone needs to play with the intensity/saturation of those shades to fix that.

  • tallgirl1204

in– although it is somewhat ageing.  But maybe that’s what she is going for.

    • lovelyivy

I can’t tell if it’s the look and makeup or if it’s just her- she is looking really stiff here- very unusual for her.

  • butterflysunita

I say IN.  I actually like the color.  She’s definitely looked a lot better, though.

  • Judy_J

Thigh-high?  Lately it’s all been crotch-high.  And yes, I am bored to death with the strapless, slit-to-there gown.  OUT, OUT, OUT!

  • clatie

    Why, it’s Belle Watling!

    • Aurumgirl

      Why, it’s Jessica Rabbit.

      • clatie

So funny!  The posture to me read a little more world-weary whore with a heart of gold, hence the Belle Watling comparison but JR works too.

  • OUT.  She looks better in her skeezy jeans and almost everything else i’ve seen her in.

  • appliquer

    Out. Cheap looking.

  • Sobaika

I was ‘meh’ about this until the shoes, and they are so boring and so expected and very matchy to the paneling on her dress that it tipped me (perhaps irrationaly) into Out territory.

    • Me too.  I also don’t like that the slit becomes the panel outline. Out.

  • MissMariRose

I’m going to vote IN because I suspect that the problems with color and her makeup are due to the craptastic lighting on this red carpet.

  • OUT. The dress makes her look wider on the torso (mainly the shoulders), the makeup looks weird and that slit is too high.

  • Derek_anny

You have “Jessica Rabbit; Russian Edition” under an out header.  I say Miss Jessica here is IN.
Though that high slit is working against credit.

  • Out. Totes agree about Russian Edition Jessica Rabbit.

  • nannypoo

The vertical strips give her such a curvy shape that she looks like a cartoon character. I really hate everything about this look.

  • kschwarting

Maybe it’s the lighting, but I’m seeing weird puckers down the center of the gown.  Since it doesn’t look too tight, I’m concluding that the fabric is perhaps not everything it should be.

  • Annabelle Archer

I wish there were more variety in the poses and/or the opportunity for better lighting.  She looks mighty stiff and uncomfortable.
99% of the time she gets an IN from me, so shall she now.

  • fungstyle

My biggest problem here is that I know she can do better. Don’t we grade on a curve ’round these parts? If so, I’m giving this an OUT. If this was on, say, Ms. Hough, maybe I would feel differently.

  • gabbilevy

In. I think she looks gorgeous. Although that second dress has her looking oddly top heavy, the same way Michelle Williams did at the same event from the same angle. What’s up with that?

  • Janet B

Don’t like the color or her makeup, it’s all too harsh.

  • call_me_schmeg

and there i went thinking “jessica rabbit, russian edition” would be a good thing! my questionable taste levels declare this an IN.

  • OUT. I just can’t with those flesh-colored (transparent?) panels on it. It goes straight to madame for me (couldn’t you see this on Nandi in the Heart of Gold episode of Firefly).

  • RebeccaKW

Out.  I really don’t like the dress.  The wine color is nice, but the beige?  Tan?  Whatever that is is ugly.  Also, I don’t like the slit right next to the stripe.  One or the other.

  • stubbornthoughts

I think she looks gorgeous but her face is telling me otherwise. I have to give it an OUT based off the fact that Mila, herself, doesn’t seem happy in it. If she had been selling this, I’d have bought it.

    • Comus

Yes, she definitely doesn’t look she’s feeling it.

Do Tom and Lorenzo need a red carpet moratorium?

  • alyce1213

OUT.  She and the dress are phoning it in.

  • DaveUWSNYC

The slit’s right up to Mila’s kunis.

  • betamu

Her shape is beautiful, but I’m not l’m not a fan of the color scheme.  Plus she looks so stiff here…out…as in hanging out in Madame Tussaud’s.

  • sablehunter

OUT.  Looks like a smoking jacket turned into a dress.  And she looks miserable/exhausted/stoned.

  • IN. She looks amazing and I think the color is a nod to her character. The promo stuff I’ve seen shows her wearing a lot of a slightly redder burgundy.

  • ojosazules

The colors are so so dowdy. Out.

  • out

  •  IN – I agree with the “Jessica Rabbit” comparison, but I like it. But I do think she looks older (and maybe a bit wider) than she is.

  • IN – I like the dress on her, even though I agree with T&Lo that the makeup is doing weird things to her angelic face.

  • Out and also boring.

  • Trisha26

OUT. I get over how different she looks…and not in a good way.

  • PeaceBang

Out for all the reasons you said.

  • RL McGruder

For some reason, I’m wondering if this is a dress that works specifically to this venue/culture, and not to our Western eyes.

  • Indigo54

IN!  Considering all the crap we’ve seen today I’d say this one is damn near magnificent!

    • Lisa_Cop

I’m with you, Indigo. After the atrocity that Ms. Flo was wearing this morning I have to give this a small IN.

  • Makeup is terrible (maybe it’s the Urban Decay palette?) but IN.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In, but I don’t like her shoes.

  • rainwood1

OUT.  Your upholstery colors comment was dead on.

  • SewingSiren

Kind of dull for a premiere of OZ. I’d a gone big and puffy. Big- Puffy- and Pink! With butterflies. And stars damnit.

  • tereliz

IN. It’s a great dress. I think the shoes and the makeup (wtf blush?) are what’s bringing it down, but not so much that I it’s an out. Metallic shoes and maybe a necklace would have helped here.

  • Funkykatt

It’s not awful? But sirs, it is awful! WAY OUT

  • OUT. 29 going on 50.

  • l_c_ann

Her personal, real life backstory of why her parents and she and her brother left the Ukraine might be the source of her apparent discomfort at being in Moscow.

  • carolynmo

Out. The dress is meh, but the make-up! She’s almost unrecognizable!

  • Jangle57

I get your point about the colors but to me the real crime is her face. She is so lovely – why does her face look like a Russian prison matron? As for the dress design, I don’t know that’s fair to throw her under bus just because one is burned out from the awards season, the inference being that any other time of the year, you would have been more kindly disposed towards this.  But I can’t get past her face…  OUT

  • insertclevername_ici

Out. The makeup is doing her no favors. It looks like she needs a nap. Also, from the thumbnail, the skin colored strips look, well, like skin. so at first I thought the dress was a bit more shocking than it actually is.
the shape of the dress is flattering. If she wasn’t posing like a robot, I wonder if it would be closer to an in?

  • greymain

perhaps this is Russian for beautiful ???? Everything is too harsh. OUT.

  • neofashionista

OUT .. however the angle that these photos were taken is Very unforgiving
Something about the face looks like she is trying Way too hard to make this Work when she knows it doesnt

  • Eclectic Mayhem

She looks like CZJ – out.

  • OUT – she is so much prettier than mid-level game show hostess.

  • Out-she’s so much prettier than this.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

IN .. this looks like old Hollywood glam to me.  And many extra points for having a bodice that appears to be correctly fitted — that’s something we haven’t seen much of on the red carpets this season.

  • leave_Blake_alone

Just curious: how is “Jessica Rabbit, Russian Edition” a signifier of out? Sounds AWESOME if you ask me.

  • YoungSally

Based on the location of the shoot, she may have selected a dress that caters to local tastes (based on figure skating costumes).

  • MilaXX

OUT! It’s an ugly dress with silly putty pumps and a bad makeup job. I will say she and Jada are among the few tiny women who almost always manage to get the proportion on their clothes right. I’m not sure if it’s a matter of having more money, clout or what, but I wish they’d share their secrets with Vanessa Hudgins.

  • AnnaleighBelle

In, because it’s Mila Kunis, who is so beautiful she would have to where In-n-Out napkins held together with chewed gum to look bad enough to be out.

  • Sara__B

She does look fierce and hot and sexy and all sorts of other adjectives, but she also looks harsh and dated and not one little bit elegant. OUT.

  • It’s Russia. So that means IN for me.

  • IN. I love the color on her and the effect makes a ‘bam’ off her sillouette. I only wish she had golden jewelry instead, and a big necklace instead of lame tiny earrings.

  • OUT. Mostly for the horrific makeup job.

  • lehen

SO sick of the high slit

  • samo_samo

    Out…kinda boring and blah.

  • Monkey Toe

Ugh. It looks like it was sewn from old throw pillows and overstock girdle fabric.

  • jmorino08

She is better than this dress.

  • BrooklynBomber

    It’s not awful.

Yes, it is, it’s awful! As you said: ’80s 5-star hotel lobby upholstery.

Sheesh! What’s going on with the lady stars oday?

  • Out! blah, blah, so boring.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT. She doesn’t look like herself and the whole look ages her by 20 years.

  • oatmealpie

In. Don’t we all want to look like Jessica Rabbit?

  • bailey debruynkops

    boring, OUT

  • Lose the slit and it’d look great.

  • OUT. She looks pissed. Whatever is going on with it on a technical level doesn’t even matter. She looks like she hates it.

  • I love the shape of the dress and I love that she’s wearing a dress like that which fits her boobs properly. Hate the makeup, but she’s IN.

  • Imasewsure

Russian call girl is more like it… I wouldn’t normally go OUT over something this boring but OUT

  • ashtangajunkie

It might just be my monitor, but the colour of the dress looks quite different in the first photo and I like it. The angle of the lighting in the first photo doesn’t leave her makeup looking as dark either. I don’t like it as much in the other two photos. I decided to base my opinion on the first photo because I like Mila Kunis and I really don’t think that she looks bad regardless. IN.

  • I’m sorry, that just looks cheap. OUT.

  • surfergirl70

When I was a kid, my dad was in a community theater production of Guys & Dolls.  The dresses that the Hot Box girls wore when they sang “Take Back Your Mink” looked EXACTLY like this dress.  That’s all I can see when I look at this dress.

But, she looks fierce.  I don’t love the dress, but she looks amazing in it, so I give it an IN.

  • libraangel

LOL “Russian Jessica Rabbit”! OUT. Mila, sweetie, we know you have a hourglass, fab figure, so you don’t need those ghastly strips made of tablecloth material

  • Jay Peterson

Out. If your shoes match your skin tone, why bother with them at all.

  • Out, not because she isn’t beautiful, but because I can see the cords standing out on her neck in every shot, so she must be sucking in for dear life, and that means she is not comfortable in a dress that is not even that good.

  • decormaven

That lace inset stripe is close to her skin color, so it looks kinda peek-a-boo and cheap to me. And putty pumps. Ack! Ack!

  • Stubenville

Thank God she didn’t stick her leg out.

  • out out out – the beige strips have me looking for her nipples and the slit is so high that i see both of her inner thighs gaggg

  • YolandaHawkins

Out!  It looks like a drapery panel from a bordello wrapped around her.  Love the hair.

  • OUT.  Witty comment not found.

  • Pants_are_a_must

OUT. The dress makes her look longer, but also bulkier in places she is most definitely not. And I hate the make up.

  • Adriana_Paula

  • OUT. With that make up I’m seeing the evil queen from Disney’s Snow White. And the contouring on the dress looks like it’s giving her a tummy. Maybe it’s the tailoring?

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

  • formerlyAnon

Man. You guys are dead on about the makeup.

It would be an easy in with a more moderate slit.  As it is, I’ll give her an in because I like the dress otherwise and like the color with her hair and that green background.

  • IN.

  • frannyprof

Out. Looks cheap and it’s not.

  • Bwin51

It’s something reminiscent of Star Trek somehow.

  • nerdykitten

  • Diego!

OUT. She looks like a brunette version of Mariah Carey. Even her dress is “Mimi’ tight!

  • Aly Light

  • Hmmm…at first glance I’d say OUT. HOWever….she IS wearing Versace in Russia. Know your audience, know your venue! Hence, IN!

  • Louise Bryan

I do think it strongly recalls Jessica Rabbit, only in hotel lobby colors, but for all that, I still give her an IN.

  • Not a fan – the slit seems excessive with the peek-a-boob panels.

  • OUT.  now, put that dress back in jessica rabbit’s closet.

  • lrhg

Out. When I first saw it, the way the taupe widens up top makes it look like two hands trying to grope her and I can’t get past it.

  • Lilithcat

There’s no one element of this that’s awful.  But the whole is worse than the sum of its parts.

  • mhleta

Out. I’m getting and 80s Vegas lounge vibe from it, too.

  • Beth G

  • I gotta say, I love everything about it! At least it’s not a front coochy slit.

  • jkatkins

    OUT.  Ugly, tacky, aging.

  • snarkykitten

    Not liking it one bit

  • IN!  Jessica Rabbit: Russian Edition.  I only dislike the make-up and I’m not burnt out on these types of looks because I more or less ignored the Oscars.  I will concede that she does look like hotel upholstery but I don’t mind, I think she looks great.  But I do hate that slit for showing me those shoes.  Ugh.  The hair is ok.  Still an “In.”  I haven’t managed to talk myself out of it.

  • IN!!! it’s mila f-ing kunis!

  • CassandraMortmain

The color of the dress looks slightly different in every pic.  I’m guessing that in person it was beautiful.  The dress really fits and flatters her and the jewelry is well chosen.  Plus it just seems right for an event in Russia.  Her hair is gorgeous.  IN.

  • JasmineAM

OUT. The makeup is TERRIBLE. Dress is blahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

  • bertkeeter

She’s too young for this…Call up Jerry Hall and send it over to her!

  • trisker

    Jessica Rabbit! Exactly!  o u t

  • OUT. The dress is boring and the make-up is weird.

  • oohsparkley!

It’s the worst I’ve ever seen her and I don’t really like it. But it’s still an in. Because I save the outs for something that is truly bad.

  • Moira MacDougal

Hard, but definitely an out. And that make-up is atrocious.

  • lobsterlen

In sort of but why do they all have their hair styled like Jessica Rabbit when wearing dresses like this? Is it a rule? Does Disney require it? Maybe Disney gets some sort of royalty

  • jw_ny

    not her dress, hair, makeup…

  • altalinda

In.  It’s elegant, though it would look nicer with a smile.  She looks so grim.

  • sk8tfan

pissed off lady wrestler is scanning the audience for her stylist, so she can body slam him as he deserves.

  • Bethany Fairbrother

I think the photo is not doing this dress any favors.  On close inspection you can see that the pink panel has some detail.  Also, the color of the dress changes from picture to picture.  The dress looks heavy but I think she looks like a movies star and therefore IN!

  • Zippypie

OUT.  This is so harsh looking that it almost tips her over to the adult film carpet.  Almost.  And she’s so beautiful and earthy.  NOT her dress and makeup.

  • warnerave

IN…can’t say anything bad about the dress and the fit..

  • j_anson

OUT. There is no excuse for that makeup and the dress is uninspiring. I do like it from the hips down, though. The slit may be over done, but this particular one does work for her.

  • Yes I’m totally over THE SLIT as a fashion statement but it’s not like she looks actively awful (for that, see Flo from a few posts earlier). I’m voting IN, but in a bored way.

  • I already voted this as IN, but I wanted to add: Consider the audience. Mila is in Russia, trying to sell this movie to Russians. These femme-fatale, thigh-high-slit, hourglass-shaped styles are adored by Russian people. The girl knows her audience.

  • Rand Ortega

NOPE. & again, I’ve had it w/ these gyno slits.

  • kim flodin

Out. It makes her look old and harsh.

  • zelavie

  • kategs

I’m sorry, it’s an out for me, it’s just not really there and she looks like she thinks so too!

  • mike__tv

out, it ages her. I guess she’s going for the appropriate whitchy look, still out.

  • MissAmynae

OUT. She just looks really ticked off.

  • demidaemon

OUT. The dress feels a bit dated to me and reads mature. I’m also not liking the color combination, slit, or the shoes. Above the neck, she looks fine (with fabulous hair) but the rest is all “No.”

  • IN. i love seeing how celebs dress differently for specific countries, and for a premier in russia? i think it works!

  • conniemd

    out. Bored

  • unbornfawn

    Easy. OUT.

  • LaSylphide

Out,largely because of the Peek ‘o the Panty under those sheer, vertical panels.

  • another_laura

Out.  Like T Lo sez, Jessica Rabbit but drab.  Like, really drab.

  • carolie_king

OUT. NO idea why – I just don’t like the overall effect.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. Fierce as a Siberian winter!

  • But I love Jessica Rabbit! I say IN even though someone smacked that makeup on with a spatula.

  • GTrain

It’s pretty enough but that slit is doing too much. OUT

  • MzzPants

Out.  To me, she looks aged and tired.

  • bd73

    in. including the shoes.

  • ankali

OUT. If it weren’t for her makeup, she’d be an IN for me, but as is, she looks jet-lagged and tubercular*.

*If in fact she is both jet-lagged and tubercular, I change my vote to IN for INsanely professional effort in showing up and looking only half-bad.

  • OUT!! Her face is a different color…

  • uprightcitizen

I think the color was chosen to go with the movie (and the step and repeat, maybe?). Looking at the awful things that green backdrop did to Michelle Williams’ black and cold dress, I can see where going with an 80s jewel toned plum if you’re going to be standing in front of an 80s emerald wall could be a good idea. Seems like that wall is reflecting all over the place and making colors go wonky.

And you’re right, she looks statuesque as hell. I think the whole film has this kind of color scheme, from the trailers I’ve seen. So I guess the debate becomes “Do you dress to match your movie, or to separate yourself from it?” It’s not the most original dress but it’s pretty va-va-voom. Dang, she looks tired, though.

  • oldbobbydraper

    she looks very nice.

  • JauntyJohn

Out.  Somehow it looks like some kind of sexy movie usher outfit to me.

  • Cynica

  • I agree with you on the color combination. The lines and shape of the dress are perfect for her figure however and if they’d been done in more interesting fabrics it could have been stunning. Her makeup is aging her 20 years. Awful.

  • wayout46

Bad color for her skin tone and it’s so obvious she has put on just a few pounds (which actually make her look great) but seems self-conscious enough about it to go for those cheap optical illusion stripes. Sorry Mila, love you but OUT.

  • The makeup is very Vicky B and I don’t know how to feel about it on her.

  • AmeliaEve

Lower case “out.” This is a near-miss to me. Aside from the ’80s hotel connotations, I think  the colors and textures are what makes this dress stand out a little from the typical strapless column. I really like the insets, but I think the slit takes away from them. If the slit were in the back, I’d give this an “in.” The symmetry would have been pretty.

As for the make-up, I saw an Oz-themed kit at Sephora. Maybe she’s contracted to wear it?

  • Alyssa

Out. Don’t like the colors, don’t like slits that that practically show the world your business, makeup is very strange looking. But at least she tried!

  • mjude

OUT.  not a fan of the color

  • In.

  • Color = puce = OUT!

  • CT14

  • mozzer0906

OUT, I don’t think much of it is working

  • marilyn

    Out.  Lobby upholstery it is.

  • EEKstl

I don’t know if I hate it enough to give it an OUT, nor like it enough to give it an IN.  I’m in Fashion Limbo.

  • Stiff and awkward.

  • TheLaurenJean

I’m going with an in. I think they’re trying to do a theme dressing, considering her character wears this exact color in the previews and Michelle Williams’ character wears gold in it as well. It’s a great dress that reminds me of the flick; isn’t that what it’s supposed to do?

  • Zyxomma

O-U-T, out! Was this made out of the drapes in her hotel room?

  • peachy

out. upholstery hits the nail on the head.

  • SophieCollier

IN.  It’s pretty and flattering, if not stunning.

  • TSkot

    She looks fine: IN

  • quiltrx

IN…BECAUSE it is Jessica Rabbit incarnate!

  • elemspbee

sad to say: OUT. The face looks strange. That dress is to heavy–couch material. Body of course is slammin, and the hair is quite fine.
all that said, just happy she has a new movie out. can’t wait for more appearances and pole dancing!

  • mom2ab

    Brighton Beach chic.

  • barbarienne

You’re spot on with the “Jessica Rabbit, Russian Edition” comment. However, I am not seeing that as a problem. She’s not bad, she’s just been dressed that way by a highly paid stylist.

Lukewarm IN from me. It’s nothing awesome, but not bad enough to be out.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

OUT. it’s just kind of a mess for some reason. Not sure why.

  • kathrineb

I don’t like her style one bit. I am never excited by what she wears. This dress is not doing her any favors and she is so beautiful so that is really saying something.

  • littlemac8

  • shelley514

She’s looking old in the face.
