IN or OUT: Jennifer Lawrence in Roland Mouret

Posted on February 21, 2013

We’ll start off with the compliment (note that we did not write “A compliment,” for there will be only one): Her makeup is really pretty here:

Jennifer Lawrence attends the Vanity Fair, Barneys New York and The Weinstein Company celebration of ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ in Los Angeles in a Roland Mouret dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti sandals.

Roland Mouret Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Esther Heesch (NEXT)

Soft and dewy. Perfect for her looks. We don’t love the flatness of the hair, but we don’t hate it enough to make an issue of it.

Now, about that dress…

We stared at it for a full minute because we honestly thought that skirt was one royally fucked up pair of shorts. We thought this whole thing was some sort of crazy romper and we couldn’t, for the life of us, figure out why the hell she’d wear such a weird garment on this, the most important week of her year. But then we realized it was a double-slit skirt and we just said, “…Oh.” Because it’s the weirdest slit skirt we’ve seen in a while.

Jen, some advice: if you can see straight on through to the other side, we suggest you put the dress back on the hanger, dear. It looks awkward as hell in pictures and the black colorblocking gives the impression you have a dislocated hip or something. You’re all askew below the waist, sweetie.

Are we wrong here?

Vote Now!

IN! You’re wrong, T Lo! She looks edgy and gorgeous!

OUT! A badly ironed pile of rags.

Emma Stone’s puffy insect dress inspired much debate, but the vote came down firmly on the side of OUT.

    • LuisaNL

No, you’re not wrong. Make up is really pretty, everything below the neck is unflattering and ugly! OUT.

      • Anplica Fiore

Yeah – what an awkward dress!  HATE the skirt.  OUT!!

      • kirkyo

I’m going to be a bit more forgiving and just say from the waist down. I think it looks great until you get to the tortured, wrinkled skirt that will only play nice if you are hip-less.

        • Eva Whitsett

Yes! EXCEPT it also looks tortured on the model. If an underweight model can’t make it work, nobody can.

          • emily

Truth. It’s an OUT. That slit up to her lady bits is just not okay and the fact that it’s the same in the back is just wrong. Don’t ship it out to anyone, just burn it.

            Pretty makeup though.

          • poggi

If possible, it even looks worse on the model.  Out, probably on everyone and in every setting.

        • Jennifer Coleman

It seems the dress is on a mission to completely pull the focus from her smokin’ hot bod. And it is wildly successful.

        • Tom Shea

That’s pretty much exactly it. I kind of like the bodice in a n edgy way, but the skirt doesn’t quite work. And it’s clearly a cocktail event and not a red carpet, but it still isn’t quite right.

    • shirab

Looks like the gauchos that were popular when I was in middle school.

      • andreawey

haha I was just gonna say coolots!

    • Introspective

wrinkled, too complicated, and trying too hard to be “edgy.” edgy does not have to be defined by wonky necklines and black and white. it can be less obvious you know?

      so yeah, sorry JLaw. OUT.

(but keep that makeup artist for your big night this weekend)

    • WittyCism

Out.  Poor kid likes them wonky-boobed dresses.

    • Nyltiak

I don’t love the dress, and I do hate the weird slit, but she does look pretty. The makeup is, as you said, particularly nice.

    • Jonika Tannous

Looks like a craft project I made in second grade… I was never a very talented child.

    • lehen

out.  and why is she hanging out in someone’s living room?

    • christinewithanx

OUT, agreed. Who did this to her!?!?!? She looks like she’s having an existential origami wrestling match on her body.

    • Janet B

      Not her dress. Out.

    • Indigo54

Never mind the double slit.  What’s up with that crooked bodice attachment?  Was it really necessary to attach it like that at the waist?  The finishing is terrible.   OUT, OUT, OUT!

      • Adriana_Paula

Couldn’t agree more.  This is an insult to the art of sewing.

    • xmixiex

except for the weird slit(s)… I really like the dress. *shrug*

oh, and the shoes are terrible.

    • Trisha26

      OUT. A wrinkled bad idea.

    • kittenwithaquip

OUT. I’m so tired of these overworked, bunchy silhouettes with awkward angles.

    • aeb1986

this makes me irrationally angry. she is such a gorgeous girl. she needs to stick with simple and elegant like that red calvin klein dress she wore on the red carpet a few years back. OUT

      • l_c_ann

This one is an OUT, for all the origami reasons in the world. (Heck, it’s cut so it looks too tight on the runway model’s hips.)

Yes to that simply elegant Calvin Klein dress several years ago when she stood out from the crowd wearing it and it fit her perfectly.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

The dress is a size too small … on the bottom at least.  That is why the slit is being pulled so far apart that you can see clear through to France on the other side. If it were looser and the slit hung straight, I think the skirt would be pretty (I would still hate the bodice tucks with the fire of a thousand suns however.)

      • annyb

It is making her look bowlegged. Knees akimbo. Bowlegged.

    • lilibetp

I like the earrings.  They don’t go with the dress, but they’re really pretty.  The dress is a huge-big OUT.

      • foodycatAlicia

Yes – I’d have given a second compliment for the earrings. And indeed a third for the shoes.

    • charlotte

This looks like someone tried to fold a napkin into a paper plane. Not good.

    • StellaZafella

OUT. She got up from the table with her napkin stuck to her lap.

    • Pants_are_a_must

She looks like she’s done with it all. Can’t blame her; I’d be done with it all if I had to pretend this dress wasn’t just fabric sown into a screwed up silhouette. OUT.

    • BrooklynBomber

We’ve had Project Runway All Stars, Project Runway Teams, and now. . .

      Project Runway Clever Chimpanzees!

      (Also: OUT)

    • Imasewsure

Correct on all points particularly that gawd awful slit… OUT but in for the makeup

    • MilaXX

I went back and forth on this and finally realized I had too many “if she”‘s to give this an IN.
      – If she had darker hair
      – If the slit was only in the front
      – If she was wearing a better shoe
All together I guess that makes this an OUT

      * I do thing the makeup is nice

    • Gus Casals

Once you see that you are seeing right through her, it’s nothing but an OUT.

    • Kiltdntiltd

      Utterly and completely OUT!!!!!!

    • Katrin

Out! I was on board until I scrolled down to that slit. Split?

    • Gabriella M

OUT. Like a cocktail napkin half-assedly folded by the waitress.

    • Imasewsure

I’m reconsidering the dress…. it’s still OUT but I think with a normal skirt (i.e. no slit in the front) this might have worked… looks better on her than the model but that’s not saying much

    • Adriana Blair

I like the bodice but it isn’t fitted that well and then the skirt is just fug. OUT.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I hate the slit but I like the dress otherwise, love her makeup, and the earrings are gorgeous. IN

    • Jackie4g

No, you’re not wrong. That skirt is tortured fabric.

    • DiverK

I like her here.  It’s a little off beat, but she looks good. IN.

    • mmc2315

TLo writes “Are we wrong here?”
No, you are not wrong.  As my kids would say, Awks.

    • susan6

Everything from the waist up works.  Everything below the waist….is KAPUT!!!  (Even the model isn’t making it work.)

    • Sally Brownson

I think it’s striking and didn’t even notice the double slit until you pointed it out. IN

    • Jane Donuts

Oh girl. Oh girl! The split skirt is a hideous mistake. And those shoes need to go back to the set of “Clueless” where they belong.

    • unbornfawn

    • Rhonda Shore

Out, it just looks so ill-fitted, rumpled, and uncomfortable; her hair also looks sloppy.  I do like her make-up and earrings though.

    • lrober03

Those earrings are amazing and really compliment her eyes.
And I don’t mind the top, when I saw the preview pic on the TLo front page, I thought IN!Saw the bottom, immediately changed my mind.

    • RebeccaKW

Out. That dress is pretty ugly.  I just can’t with skirts split up the front middle. I do like the earrings, even though they don’t belong here.

Jennifer, you are gorgeous.  Why are you doing this to yourself?

    • Karen

Dear heavens – OUT! But the makeup is nice. Not loving the flat hair though.

    • Sara__B

You’re right, TLo. OUT! That dress is ugly — even on the model. The double slit! The origami! The fit! The wrinkles!

      • Sara__B

(Replying to myself) Maybe she’s trying to look like a “serious actress” rather than a “sexy starlet”? Redefining oneself through fashion is perfectly acceptable, but the fashion needs to fit, and look good, too.

    • Shawn EH

Out! Horrible dress. Love the makeup and earrings, though!

    • lbl

I don’t know why the dress looks so weird, but it does. Does it even fit? That are between the chest and waist, what is going on there? And the wrinkles on top of that… Also, the hair is an issue for me and she’s another one of those people who I think looks better without the tan. I agree with your one compliment though.

    • Jangle57

I like the white color on her but that’s about it.  OUT

      • mhleta

But it kinda looks like muslin, right?

    • purpleprose78

Out! I think this dress might be a bridge too far in the origami, napkin folding trend that is so popular on the runway and red carpet now.

    •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

If it didn’t have any slit at all, it would be a pretty, but done, dress. But since the slits are a huge design mistake, it’s an OUT

    • MoHub

It looks as if it’s glued together from bits an pieces of leftover fabric.

    • decormaven

Out. Out beyond the Outer Limits, Out. That dress is just folded dinner napkin, and she’s more than cutlery.

    • Julie Fountain

The dress is awful.  Change that and she’d look great.  Out!

    • mjude

      no girl….OUT

    • FrayedMachine

I think my biggest issue with the dress is just how wrinkled it looks. I feel like if it looked more polished over all it would be way nicer. Maybe without the slit in the front? I don’t know. I want to like it but I can’t!

    • aykhan

OUT! This is an awkward, rumpled mess of a dress.

    • Emily

I like the earrings? Out. Sorry, Jen.

    • WordyDoodles

I don’t think it’s that bad! I actually like the direction of this design, but I’ve always found origami interesting (minus the napkin-folded-on-my-chest look). The makeup is fine but not special. Same with the shoes, though I really like the delicate ankle straps (and I’m usually against strappy shoes). The hair, to me, is the most o_O part of the look– I think it actually could have made a big difference for the look to have a clean, side swept style.

    • mhleta

OUT! Unless, of course…”Project Runway Presents: The Dinner Napkin Challenge!”

    • DinaSews

OUT.  No one could make that dress work.

    • 3boysful

Frankendress (and extra demerits for wrinkles) – Out
Weird napkin bodice that’s unflattering to anyone with boobs – Out
Shoes that belong on grandma in an Atlantic City casino – Out

Her red toes are cute, too.

    • ojosazules

She looks like what comes out of the printer when it goes wonky and gets jammed up. OUT.

    • Qitkat

Ouch, OUT. She ought to have tried to run, tried to hide from this dress.
I liked Emma Stone’s much better.

    • Stella Zawistowski

The whole thing just looks like a mistake. The top looks like paper stapled together, and the bottom looks like it was a skirt that ripped open. OUT.

    • uprightcitizen

You’re not wrong. When will designers stop folding dresses together as if they’re preparing napkins for a dinner party? That wouldn’t look good on anyone, but would be very cool in the center of a plate at the black and white ball.

    • leave_Blake_alone

Hate to say it, but out.

    • d4divine

I love the child…give her props for being a 22 year old that doesn’t have her crotch hanging out or looking bored and over it all. But, that slit is a little weird.

    • Patricia Gillett

OUT. That is one awkward skirt!

    • Erin Courtney

OUT! Also why does she keep posing like Wonder Woman all the time?

    • anne.landre

All the beautiful dress choices we know are out there, and she picks this tortured mess? If only we could sprinkle her with magic Tilda dust and watch the scales drop from her eyes.

    • ConnieBV

If that panel had connected in the front this could have been a stunner. As it is, it just makes me hope she’s nowhere near her period and that should NOT be a consideration. Designer foul. This thing should have never walked a runway.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  This is a craft project dress gone horribly awry. I kind of liked the architectural looking top until I realized it was just 2 crazy ass darts protruding from her nipples. Oh JLaw, this is all wrong for you.

    • CatherineRhodes

      OUT. Project Runway bottom third.

    • Alyssa

Makeup is really pretty, and I like the earrings. Everything else is not good, so OUT.

    • Emily Smith

I love her but that dress…out

    • bordergirl

Jennifer’s main problem in every outfit is her posing. Her hands are in the wrong (awkward) position. Go up to your waist or … ? something???

    • Beardslee

Out.  Dumb dress that has some highfalutin’ ideas.

    • MzzPants

      Scah-roll-down fug.  OUT.

    • Lori Wade Miller

From the waist up, very lovely.

    • NePlusUltra

I like the structural elements happening with the top. But the waist and everything that happens below it is poorly constructed and disastrous.

That being said, it looks like she knows that it’s weird. And that makes it weirder.

    • YolandaHawkins

No gentlemen, you are not wrong.  WTH?  There is no silver lining in this playbook.  OUT!

    • chylde

can’t stop looking at that skeletal emaciated model in this garment. ew.

    • Alison Sigman

Out. But not before she hands over the earrings. Those I like.

    • Julie Chase

The top is interesting and the earrings are great, but GAH to the rest. Out.

    • greymain

so OUT!!!! the makeup IS lovely tho.

    • leftcoastpickle

In, but only because I love her so, and if the skirt didn’t have the bizarre double slit, I think it would be an awesome look. God, what a weak in that is. But it is in.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Everything below the neck is out.

    • Judy_S

OUT. Dress belongs in a museum, on a wall, not on a living person.

    • MintaHallWriter

I kinda love it from the hips up.  BUT…that skirt…just bizarre. I’ve gotta give it an OUT

    • Beth Mellone

The top is a bit interesting, but the skirt is a student draping project gone terribly awry. “I can’t get this waist dart in the right place! Eh, I’ll just fold it in here, stitch it down, and call it a ‘design element.'”

      • Adriana_Paula

    • Carly Warnock

out. just saw silver linings playbook last night! it was really moving.

    • Tatiana Luján

This is a good – on – paper dress, but an ugly, unflattering one in real life that. Besides, looks as if it were made by a junior design student.

    • Stacy Parker Cole

OUT.  It’s a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

    • Suzie Vazquez

      bizarre dress

    • myblackfriendsays

    • Deborah Lipp

Thank God she fixed her makeup crisis.

This is a “girl that’s not your dress.” She stands like a tomboy, and she gets roles with an athletic, girl-next-door component to them, and this is not the dress for that girl.

    • dickylarue

Out. It kind of has an 80’s Z Cavarricci’s mall look to it. It almost looks denim. I’m honestly not a fan of that kind of Helm’s Deep wall top of a dress. Especially, when a woman is busty. That said, the slit is oddly vulgar in a good way for me & I love the shoes, hair/makeup. I think the color blocking and the top of the dress are the “outs” for me.

    • Anne StJean

I am so confused by JLaw’s stylists. Here is a girl with a pretty face and a SMOKIN (seen Silver Lining’s Playbook?) bod, and they can’t let her look good. I should think it would take more talent to make her look this bad than it would to make her look at least presentable. Such a shame.

      • Amelia Logan

Shes super curvy and her thighs don’t touch! she should look amazing all the time.

    • trisker

OUT.  I love her but this dress is wacko.

    • alwaysanswerb

I offer another compliment for the earrings!

    • prettybigkitty

      Origami dress gone bad.  out.

    • NurseEllen

Here’s another compliment: the earrings are great. The dress?  I can’t find a single positive thing to say about it.  Sorry, Jen, this is an OUT, and PS: don’t let Mouret dress you on Sunday.

    • Scott Cooper

If it had been a pencil skirt it would have been incredible.

    • Joyce VG

Oh the dress is definitely an OUT. Wrinkled, poor fitting and ill designed. Wow. Her make up is glorious though.

    • ankali

OUT. Everything above the neck is great, but that dress is so awkward and overworked. Weird, as I tend to think of Roland Mouret’s work as very fluid and slinky.

    • melanie0866

Out.  It’s a scroll-down fug – fine until you get to her waist.

    • alyce1213

Everything from the waist up is in, but the skirt overwhelms and makes it OUT.

    • ringthing

OUT. The dress on the model has more ease through the torso and that helps even with the stupid slit. Not a great red carpet dress anyway, but it would look better on JLaw if it fit her better.

    • alaskahyoung

Sorry, JenLaw, but it’s OUT. You better have something good for sunday.

    • Judy_J

OUT.  All I could think of when I saw this was a badly folded origami bird or something.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Out. Orgy-gami

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Out. Jen, did you intend to show the world how bow-legged you are?

    • Dot

What the fuck? Horrendous. Judging from her facial expression in half of these photos, she seems to agree. How does one even sit in such a skirt without exposing one’s naughty bits to the world?

    • formerlyAnon

Out. Skirt is too, too, awkward.

    • Maya

out. if there were no slits i think it could be ok though.

    • Dagney

It looks weird on the model too.

    • Monabel

I will, however, give asylum to those earrings.

    • TSkot

Origami dresses rarely work off the runway, and this is no exception.

    • newtonGOTbeaned

I like her earrings and shoes, but what a strange dress. OUT.

She obviously looks great as a blonde, but I like her best with slightly darker hair, like it was a couple of weeks ago.

    • bertkeeter

Trying to be polite…a train wreck!

    • crash1212

      OUT. I don’t even like the make-up.

Also, Emma Stone looked great in that fabulous dress…so there.

    • insertclevername_ici

I have less of a problem with the double slit than the fit and the wrinkled fabric. I think if this fit her perfectly and held up better under pressure, she might be able to pull it off. As is, the girls are a little saggy and the skirt is wrinkled. It looks like she needed a tighter bodice and a looser skirt.

      • insertclevername_ici

ps – i would like a pair of those earrings for myself, please.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i have a headache and this is not helping…OUT!

    • Elizabeth

OUT. A wrinkled, ill-fitting, weird mess.

    • BuffaloBarbara

This time, definitely agreeing with you guys.  The top isn’t bad, but the skirt is just dippy looking.  I don’t like those middle slits anyway. I wish they’d move them back to the sides where they don’t look so awkward.  Doubling down on the middle slit is… not good.  Especially combined with the color blocking.

    • sweetlilvoice

In! Hate the earrings though. Still love her.

    • MissMariRose

OUT. I remember when she showed up to the Oscars in the simple Calvin Klein dress. She does simple and stunning to a degree very, very few actresses can. She should stick with it. Leave the overly designed fou faw to the lesser goddesses.

    • Therese Bohn

Out.  I hate flappy front bodices, and the skirt is just bizarre.

    • jw_ny

The slits make her look bow-legged!  The white is too stark, the skirt is a wrinkled mess, the folds and pleats are just way over worked, there’s no balance or harmony between the color blocking…black and white, it’s baggy at her mid section, her hair is awful, earrings don’t really go with the look, and I hate her shoes.  Other than that…it’s fantastic!  😉

    • suzq

Out.  The dress is meant to be worn by an emaciated woman who never sits down.

    • butterflysunita

OUT.  A horrible, evil dress that spontaneously falls apart as soon as it leaves the runway.  Making the wearer look terrible.

    • Darva Sutra

What the rorschach?  Stared at black blob on her thigh for a while, trying to figure it out.  Looks like the grim reaper has got his hand up her skirt.  This dress took me to a bad place.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

No. You are not wrong. This dress looks like a poorly thought exercise in sewing techniques-Can we put a dart on the outside of the bodice? Check.  Can we use not one but two slits in a wackadoodle skirt? Check.
Yes, her make-up is pretty.  Her stylist could do so much better than this. How hard is it to dress a lovely young woman who has a good figure?  OUT.

    • Buffy

That is one fugly dress and I usually love Roland Mouret.  So OUT.  But I love the earrings!

    • littlemac8

YIKES!!! OUT and OUT!!  Love the earrings, though.  And her makeup is lovely.  Nothing, but nothing, can redeem that dress!

    • Zippypie

      The earrings are beautiful, too.

The dress (can you call this a dress?) is an origami nightmare.  OUT.

    • GorgeousThings

You’re absolutely on point here. It looks just as fucked up on the runway model. A rare miss for M. Mouret.

    • SophieCollier

It should not be gapped like that, but since Jen has actual hips, unlike a runway model, it’s going to fall like that unless they redo the skirt.  OUT because of poor design.  It could have been pretty and interesting instead of awkward and unflattering.

    • Michelle O’Brien

I’ve seen PR losing dresses that are better than that. OUT

    • rissa42210

OUT.  The top starts out okay (and JUST okay), but is completely indefensible from the waist down.

    • snarkykitten

oh girl. Please stop wearing strapless dresses. They do you no favors. (But at least you try!)

    • lalahartma

      It’s fine.  In!

    • Pterodactyl111

    • The Dose of Reality

I totally agree with the weird slit…but I think the dress is interesting….IN!

    • PeaceBang

Out. But she can hand over those earrings.

    • demidaemon

      WTF. WTF? WTF!!!!! OUT.

    • Lilithcat

      You are so right.

    • demidaemon

Yes, but the ink cartridge would have to explode on half the paper as well.

    • oldbobbydraper

      she is so…. bland.

    • Nancy Dunn

You are right. It’s just weird, my brain and eyes couldn’t make sense of it, and not in a good way!

    • conniemd

As my eyes scrolled down, I too stopped when I could see the wallpaper behind her all the way through the sit in the front of the skirt. Out

    • neofashionista

sorry to say it makes her look like she has ambiguous insect genitalia
      that an OUT!!

    • Lizzyisi

In! Love it. All angles and beautiful face and earrings that rival her eyes.

    • Eovaai

Don’t hate this but don’t love the slit. I’m giving it an OUT but only marginally.

    • LaSylphide

It’s trying to be interesting, but it just looks sloppily tailored. Out.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      (Points and laughs)

    • Louise Bryan

You’re wrong, o mighty ones.  She looks really good here, edgy, young.  It’s a weird dress, but she is working it quite admirably well.

    • barbarienne

You’re entirely right. From the neck up, hooray! Heck, from the waist up is fine.

But the slit is cray-cray and the proportion stumpifies her. This can’t be anything but OUT.

Has anyone said ‘boob wings’ yet? I’m too full of cold to scroll down the comments x

So sad when a stunning lady gets it wrong every time.

    • Vera

      OUT. Sorry, Jen.

    • marlie

OUT. I hate the double slit, and it doesn’t fit the way that it should – the bust/torso is wonky. But hey, gorgeous earrings!

    • aquamarine17

out! a dress that is hard to imagine being manufactured. besides it’s obvious faults, it also seems like it would be awkward the whole time wearing it, sitting et al.

    • Marie Fessler

Out. Even on RW model it was a wrinkled up/riding up mess on the hip.

    • AthenaJ

FINALLY somone figured out how to apply eyeliner on her so that it actually compliments her eyes! The frock is definitely a ‘Girl that’s not your dress’!!

    • Danielle Lisle

Makeup is gorgeous but I can’t with that slit. OUT.

    • amf0001

that girl has such a beautiful body and she just doesn’t dress for it at all.  Shame. There is nothing at all wrong with her,  she’s just chosing the wrong clothes.

    • shanteUstay

Bottom of the dress is just…yuck!
She’s not the type of dynamic girl to to pull off a neckline like that anyhow

    • BrightsideSusan

It’s an out – the dress is just too awful.  who in the world is helping this gorgeous young woman because they are doing her no favors.

    • libraangel

Now Jennifer: if you rip one side of your dress, you should NOT try to cover it up with a black sheet.

    • Nikki

I doesn’t fit… her or her body, maybe on someone else- but it seems to not even fit the model…?

    • guest2vists

Only the very top looked promising; the scroll-down was awful.  She’s beautiful but nothing can help this dress.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

      Oof. OUT

OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT. Roland Mouret, what have you wrought?!

    • ccm800

Out but to do her a solid – that dress looks like crap on a stick on the runway too. Worse even.

    • shelley514

OUT!!!  It’s 2 sizes to small for her and it’s a wrinkled mess.  Loves her anyway though.
