Halle Berry in Vivienne Westwood

Posted on February 04, 2013

Oh, BRAVA, Miss Halle.

Halle Berry attends the 44th Annual NAACP Image Awards in a Vivienne Westwood gown paired with Kabana earrings, Le Vian rings, and Brian Atwood shoes.

We were beginning to become a bit concerned about you. You always dressed to show off the goods in a fairly respectable way, but lately, your sense of desperation to still be seen as hot (which strikes us fucking ludicrous because … what? Maybe the slightest, least visible crow’s feet in the world are suddenly going to render you unfuckable? Girl, please.) has been causing you to wear some ticky-the-hell-tacky shit, honey. This is a little wrinkly, and the draping at the waist looks a little awkward, but this is SO much better than the last few things we’ve seen you in. More of this, dear. You look fabulous AND you look hot. Attagirl.

Okay, now that her back is turned: are we wrong to suggest it’s well past time for her to retire the smokey eye? We never much liked her preference for it, because it always makes her eyes recede in photographs, but lately, it’s just not looking … fresh. She needs a makeup update; not because her looks are changing or because she’s getting older, but because her look is a little stale.

that’s how you serve up the girls Halle, brava…

  • It’s true. Her look works on her – obviously she is gorgeous – but it’s been the same look for so long. She is practically the only woman on the face of the earth who doesn’t like to change her make-up or hair once in a while.

    • MilaXX

She does change the hair on occasion. She’ll grow it out for a part and she has worn wigs on occasion. However she is on record saying she feels her best with short hair.

      • And personally, I remember the long hair phase and i didn’t like it. Her features are delicate and the short hair highlights them beautifully, whereas the long hair she had was too much.

        • Sobaika

I didn’t like it either. The short hair really shows of her bone structure.

          • ballerinawithagun

Yes, short hair is perfect for her bone structure. Wish that I could…

        • MilaXX

agreed, I wish she would curl it instead spike-ing it, but I prefer hair short as well.

        • Eva_baby

Yup.  When she grew it out people were like….Oh Halle, you need to get back to your pixie cut.  At this point it is pretty much her signature look.  And even though she is not playing with cut as much, she is definitely playing around with color.  She’s got some nice highlights happening there.

    • I’m just realizing I have no idea what she would look like without a smoky eye.

  • Sobaika

Love it, she looks sexy and appropriate.

  • Its really is a gorgeous dress.  I just wish the fit was spot on, which it isn’t.  The bodice is slightly too long for her, causing all those horizontal folds. But you gents are right as usual that she looks way way better than she has of late.

    • ballerinawithagun

I think the folds are a design element. I’m so happy to see a “Viv: being worn correctly after that last silver gray fiasco. That actress would have looked perfect in this style of Westwood. Curvy women rule today.

    • Jennifer Coleman

Less of a criticism than an observation: the corsetry design of this dress works perfectly to emphasize her small waist & widen out at her bustline for that hourglass profile, but it also has a bust smushing effect when viewed from the side, which is too bad (but not a dealbreaker in judging fabulousness).
I do think Halle has had some slight facial adjustments from time to time (really, really well done ones) and it seems recently there has been a infinitesimal change that has made her eye makeup more noticeable. Either now she needs less makeup definition/coverage or something needs some time to settle into her face better.

  • rkdgal

SO much better!  I’d love to see her mix it up with her makeup, especially with lip color.  I’m sure she’d rock a red or wine…

  • I feel like this smokey eye is less intense than smokey eyes past; I’m fine with a gradual phase out. Also, I dont understand why someone didn’t just bring a portable steamer…

  • Yulie29

A new hairstyle wouldn’t go amiss, either. Yes, she looks great, she’s Halle Berry – but she hasn’t changed it in years, and it’s not like this is the only thing that would work with her looks.

She does look fantastic in that dress.

  • gabbilevy

Never been a big fan of her hair/makeup stylings but I gasped when I saw these photos. Really strong choice.

  • didn’t tina fey wear this dress in burgundy a few weeks ago? looks great on both of them.

  • Little_Olive

Oh yes. I was gonna say she looks tired, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and blame the makeup.

Hate the hair. Time to change that also.

Re. the dress, it is not in her wheelhouse and I don’t love it -not alone, nor on her-, but it is indeed nice to see her step away form her usual va-va-voom looks.

    • kimmeister

On the other hand, I looked at her and wondered if she’d had eyelid surgery or something, because something looks off.

      • ecallaw1977

I think the makeup she’s been sporting lately reminds me of Michael Jackson in the zombie scene of Thriller.

  • That dress looked good onTina Fey, and it’s looking good on Ms Halle too.

  • MilaXX

When they announced her I said a quick little prayer because the NAACP awards is not the place to hoe it up. Thankfully she was dressed appropriately.  I would like to see her change up the face a bit. Perhaps a clean eye and a stronger lip.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Yes, I agree.  I think the smoky eye is boring — would love to see her rock some red lips.

    • tereliz

Could not agree with you more, and on all counts.

  • kschwarting

It’s definitely an improvement, but I really dislike the folds/tucks around the waist and hips.  She’s very slender and this design element widens her.

  • nannypoo

I disagree about the eyes. I like her makeup and I think she looks great. I’m glad to see her in a non-slutty dress, but it seems to be a little tight.

    • l_c_ann

You can see the stays in the corset, not that that’s a bad thing.
But couldn’t she choose someone other than Vivianne (can’t get any whiter than Vivianne) Westwood as a designer?  She could make some aspiring designer really happy.

  • I don’t really like the dress, but it does look good on her.  And her earrings are fabulous.  I agree about the eye make-up…there’s too much shadow underneath her eyes, and that flatters pretty much nobody.

  • formerlyAnon

Good job. I don’t know if I’d advise her to change it because it looks SO good on her, but what I am a little tired of is the short hair. And I like short hair. But keeping it short might be the better course, as I’d hate for her to look like an ordinary gal in a less than flattering hairstyle.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Best evah!!

  • mjude

oh boy, i dont care for the look at all

  • meowing

I say retire not only the smokey eye, but also consider retiring the spiky hair.  She looks great with short hair, but surely a stylist can find something new and fresh to do with her locks.

    • throwaneyeonthis

I absolutely agree about the hair.  You have to be extra careful as you get older not to hold onto an old look too long.  And if you do, it better be a classic.  Spikey hair for too many years makes you end up appearing a little Kate Gosselin-like.

  • Dress is fab but a bit of a taxi-creased mess in the skirt. Pope waving mobile required for transport.

  • libraangel

I don’t know: I like it, but…….The white bodice is a little too much, the dress below a little too little, and the fold across her abdomen is just weird – like someone sewed it wrong. Yet she still does look very good, but I agree with you with the smokey eyes look: always looks like they were punched!

  • More than her makeup, it’s her hair that’s bothering me a little. But yeah, it’s time for a makeover.

  • SewingSiren

It’s a conservative look from Vivienne and Halle , but beautiful none the less.

  • Vivienne is making a killing on this strapless look.

  • Rand Ortega

Halle is so much lovelier w/out the stink of desperation that has surrounded her of late. Wish the fit around the middle was a little more relaxed. Other than that– perfection. God, what a gorgeous woman.

  • PeaceBang

Such an improvement! The dress is great but yes, her eye make-up is looking stale.

  • I love this dress. She looks awesome. Makeup isn’t inspired, I agree. Really wish she’d do something else with her hair besides spiky.

  • conniemd

Halle, don’t care if you have a few crows feet and parentheses around your mouth, your still gorgeous.

  • Aside from the wrinkliness of this, I love this look. Classy, elegant, and still sexy as hell. She needs to stay with this kind of look.

  • tereliz

FINALLY! It ain’t perfect, but I’ll take it. It’s at least venue appropriate. Someone must have told her it wouldn’t be good if she went to the Image Awards dressed like girl #2 in a bounce video.

  • I am very envious of her teeny waist.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I don’t actually think Ms. Berry looks all that great here … it is just so much better than most of her recent looks that I think she is getting points for improvement.  Maybe I saw too many ads for Warm Bodies in the last few days, but the makeup is looking kind of zombie to me.

  • marilyn

She also needs to update her hair.  Bedhead is not a ‘do.

  • Jill Morino

I want to know how she’s able to breathe, as tit as that bodice is. Poor thing!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I like the old school elegance vibe of this dress.

  • Stubenville

    Meh. Kinda predictable, no?

  • Trisha26

She looks “nice” but I’m really tired of these dresses holding boobs in a vise-like grip – when even Halle Berry has a little underarm pooching as a result you know it’s too tight! Wish we could see the shoes – they look hein.

  • Zippypie

It’s okay, better than the hoochy mama rags she’s been sporting lately, even though wrinkled and too long.  But the boob-vise looks need to be retired along with the smokey eyes.  Get comfortable with yourself, honey!  You’re gorgeous!

  • H3ff

Bitch played a 27 year old in Cloud Atlas, and pretty much got away with it. Could any other 46 year old actresses do that?

  • I’d say Halle was made for Westwood. She has the right sort of hourglass curves and also that slightly punky edginess that Westwood needs.

  • I think it’s the combo of the smokey eye with the pale brow.  With stronger brows her eyes wouldn’t shrink nearly so much.

  • Lilithcat

She looks amazing.  In my book, this is a WERQ.

  • butterflysunita

I like the direction she’s going in, and she looks beautiful–but not a fan of that dress, at least the way she’s wearing it.  Looks like she wrapped herself in a wrinkled satin sheet.

  • oohsparkley!

I thought for sure this was going to be a werq! She looks fabulous!

  • poggi

Yes on the positives and negatives.  Classier dress is good, and new makeup would be great!

  • This may be heresy, but I feel the same about her hair.  Time for an update.

  • Yeah, I WISH I was this “unfuckable”, Ms. Hallie.  I want to BE you on a molecular level.

  • StillGary

Yay! DId she beak up with Versace hochie-mama dresses? Hope it sticks!

  • Sharmin Kent

I love the dress and the asymmetrical tailoring around the waist–it’s an interesting piece of a relatively pedestrian silhouette.

But. Not only does the smoky eye make her look tired instead of sultry, it seems to highlight the botoxiness of her forehead and brows. Not hating one bit on getting a little extra help–I just think those two elements don’t complement each other.

  • PrunellaV

Nix the dark shadow on older women – it makes our eyes look hollow.

  • shnaggi

Where can she go with that hair its either sleeked or spiked. Make up wise the problem is that her eye make up has been applied under her lower rim and the line of color extended all around the eye. Thus the tired look. Halle keep away from smudging the line under your eye. Why do it at all. God it is a relief to see her dressed with some decorum at last now somebody please have the same words to Frualien Kluminator.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

After some of the more unfortunate looks that Ms. Berry has been sporting, this is a welcome change. Yes, the fit could be a tad better, but I’m so relieved that she’s looking more confident, as opposed to desperate. Attagirl.

  • barbarienne

You’re right on. She looks beautiful and sexy in this dress, but dignified rather than desperate. I also agree that she needs to do a brighter eye. She has beautiful eyes and I wish she would let them draw focus.

  • berkeleygirl

She needs an update, period.  This gorgeous gown goes a long way.  I can’t help but wonder if her constant display of her admittedly bodacious self has hurt her career.  Ms. Berry could learn a lot from Kerry Washington.  Sure, the latter is younger, but I can’t imagine any savvy TV producer would not welcome Halle Berry.  Sure, Ms. Washington may have deigned to be star on the small screen but, not only is said show a hit, but she’s also making major movies with the likes of Quentin Tarantino.

  • ccm800

Zombie in boob curtains. I do not care for this dress – it looks utterly taped on.

  • FridaStaire

  • RzYoung

I’m so in love with her engagement ring, it’s just SO vibrant in photos. I want it!

  • Gonna get all arty and say it’s very reminiscent of John Singer Sargent’s “Madame X.”

  • Alyssa

So much better than her recent appearances…and yes, I think she needs a new makeup look as well.
