Girl, That’s Not Your Look: Cobie Smulders in Saint Laurent

Posted on February 07, 2013

We always thought Colbie was stunning, and one of those statuesque types who can wear a whole range of dramatic looks, and one of those brave types who chooses to do so. But we’re not so sure we can offer our support for this latest endeavor, which puts us in mind of Lisa Marie Presley when she was Lisa Mary Presley-Michael-Jackson’s-Wife.

Cobie Smulders attends the premiere of ‘Safe Haven’ in Los Angeles in a Saint Laurent jumpsuit accessorized with a Martin Katz brooch, a Perrin Paris clutch, and Tom Ford pumps.

Everything is very upsetting here.

That hair and makeup is all wrong. That jumpsuit is actually kind of fabulous, but we don’t think it’s doing a thing for her at all. Her figure’s completely gone in that thing. The neckline is too broad and deep to be flattering to her – and slapping a big-ass brooch on it isn’t exactly helping matters. Oh, girl. Pack this look up and send it off to some cranky-hungry 17-year-old fashion model. She’s about the only one who could make it work.

You can keep the clutch, though. Because that’s pretty fabulous.

It’s like it’s too small for her in a really disproportional way.  I don’t mind the hair, I love the face, but that bag gets on my nerves.

  • I’m actually okay with the hair and makeup because she didn’t use a super heavy hand with the makeup. But yes, that jumpsuit has got to go to someone else. So not flattering for her figure. Props for trying, though!

    •  I’m with you on the hair and make up.  Just looking at her face, I think she looks terrific.  Its all about how totally wrong for her that jump is.  Frankly I’m having trouble imagining anyone pulling it off well.

      • 3boysful

To me, the jumpsuit–minus its expensive brooch–looks straight off the 50% off rack at some cheap mall store.  Shows you how important fit is.

        • Particularly when its the deliberate intent to be playing with proportion, as this jump is meant to.

          • Annabelle Archer

            That was deliberate?
I understand your comment and this is not me being sarcastic, truly asking for your input on the design, not the wearer above.  : )

          • To my design eye it is definitely intentional that the proportions are skewed. The pant length being slightly too high, the waist point break, too low, giving an elongated torso, and then that very deep neckline, which serves to drop the waist visually even further.

          • Annabelle Archer

Well…huh.  Thanks for answering  I look for your educated comments every post.

    • RebeccaKW

Same here.  I like the hair and makeup.  I actually like the top half of the suit (minus the brooch, which is just out of nowhere), but the pants are not right.

    • barbarienne

Agree on the hair and makeup. She looks like a Patrick Nagel painting, in a good way.

  • rskapcat

    I desperately want that clutch.

    • Jessica O’Connell

We might just have to fight over it. I’m not a clutch person because the way you have to hold them seems so insecure to me (as in not being safe, not being unsure of oneself), but that little kicky addition to the front makes it both more practical and more badass!

      • Little_Olive

Badass yet practical clutch. Now there is a phrase i love.

    • I too wants the precious. Also the brooch.

    • FancyPhilly

I want the clutch too! I can imagine wearing it all night and waving “hey girl!” with my clutch glove. Awesomeness.

  • OMG, I irrationaly hated the jumpsuit. And it makes her look like a slutty Teletubbie. She’s gorgeous, so it takes talent to make her look bad.

  • Annie Leung

    THAT CLUTCH! I want it.

She really is pretty, I think if she took the brooch off and got the fit of the jumpsuit loosened so that it has a sort of slouchy vibe, she would look stunning.

  • That clutch is the most badass thing I’ve coveted this week.

    • Jennifer Coleman

If I had it I would have so much fun ‘accidentally’ bopping people upside the head with it.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

It could definitely double as a self-defense weapon!

        • I heard her say in an interview that it was a boxing glove.

  • RzYoung

    The clutch!! Wowsa

  • MilaXX

My biggest issue is she has no waist in this. Love the hair/makeup, and love the clutch.

    • Sobaika

Right. I actually think the look would work perfectly if the jumpsuit were cut just a bit differently.

  • Her skin looks amazing!

  • Tatiana Luján

    I want the brooch.
    The hair is completely unflattering.

    • zuzu

That brooch deserves a better outfit.  It would look fabulous on the waist of a gathered gown.

  • Scarlet39

It’s hard to tell in the pics, but I think the waistline should be higher.  For me, that’s what’s throwing it off.

    • Little_Olive

Yes, it gives her short legs and her natural waist is lost. Lose pants should not sit that low.

  • CPK1

whoa, that bag is the epitome of fugly. Poor Cobie, that outfit is so tragic. And her crotch area must not be comfy, it seems too small and short for her. Plus the brooch is hilarious

  • Unkempt

    Superhero clutch.

  • lrober03

If you’re going to wear a jumpsuit that has a belt to emphasize your waist, perhaps the belt should be a different color than the rest of the jumpsuit so that we can actually see it?

    • kimmeister

I don’t think the belt is designed to emphasize the waist, since it sits right on her hip.

  • I think she looks butch-hot.

    • kirkyo

       Totally agree.

    • Cautia

I keep thinking, ‘How do we know this isn’t the effect she was going for?’

  • VioletFem

Although I don’t mind the hair, this look belongs to Evan Rachel Wood.

  • The jumpsuit isn’t that bad but it is not flattering on her and makes her look flat chested.

  • CPK1

she looks like she should be in that Robert Palmer video from the 80s. This is not a good thing in 2013

  • I don’t hate it. But that’s probably because Robin Scherbatsky can do no wrong in my world.

  • I like the makeup, I love the brooch, everything else you can keep.

  • I think she looks fucking fabulous, frankly. If the pant was longer and fit her better, giving her the lean proportion we all know she has, I think this would be a WERQ. Guess I’m alone with that.

    Also, first-time poster, be gentle.

    • 4JJ

Welcome! I find this to be an exceptionally accepting crowd. Folks here love trashin’ the fashion, but seldom each other.

    • erinbinek

I actually really love this, I guess we’re the only ones.  That’s okay, though. 🙂

  • If YSL wasn’t dead…this would kill him!

  • I think the stylist may have been going for an ’80’s Pat Benatar look, but it did not work out well…

  • nannypoo

It’s all bad, even the clutch.

  • Lilithcat

    Did she hurt her hand?

  • Must one really be strapped into that clutch?  It’s attached to her right hand.  How do you shake hands?  How do you get out your lipstick, or your Metro Card?

    • Right?? Now I can’t stop imagining a PA following her close behind, handling such necessities, and if, God forbid, someone extends a hand in greeting, the PA shouting, “She doesn’t like to be touched!”

  • 4JJ

Gigantic sparkly brooches pinned dead centre half-way to your belly button never work.

  • Judy_J

The brooch is the only thing here that I like, and I’m sorry it was wasted on this awful jumpsuit.

    • 4JJ

Oh I like it, too, just not where it’s situated. Though I think I would like it just a bit better if it was smaller than a breadbox.

  • butter nut

the single glove…..  no. no no no no no no no.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i thought it was a glove at first too, but it appears to be the “handle” of the clutch…

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Can we just burn all the jumpsuits in the world in a massive bonfire right now?

    • 4JJ

What a great idea. I’m demoralized that I’ve had to live through a jumpsuit era twice.

    • kschwarting

Yes!  And let’s roast marshmallows over it in celebration of no one having to wear one again.

  • Oh, the clutch actually made me wince, but only because it’s so completely wrong for the outfit. A rocker look, this is not.

  • Leah Burns

I think her makeup is bad. It makes her eyes look tiny.

    • kimmeister

The lips are fine, but yeah, that eye makeup is terrible.  Especially the liner on her bottom lids.

  • BrooklynBomber

I’ll bet she looked good in this in person. The clutch frightens me, though.

  • j_anson

I have seen that exact broach like 80 times at small-town garage sales.

  • I don’t like the look at all (or any single piece of it, for that matter) but I’ll be damned if she isn’t gorgeous despite it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The only thing I’m taking from this is wow, that is a FABULOUS clutch.

    Ignoring the rest.

(although I would say honey, go back to Reem Acra. She’s done you good last time)

  • Zippypie

Oh, the whole thing is atrocious.  Tapered leg, deep v, looking like polyester jumpsuit….oh no….  And the hair.  This is a bad early 90s train I want to get off of now.

  • Is she trying to look Butch? Cause that’s how she looks on my screen. Love the clutch, thanks for pointing that out.

  • kimmeister

That huge brooch just makes me think she’s using it as a weight so that her boobs don’t fall out of that opening.

Also, a clutch that draws so much attention to the hand demands a manicure!

  • H3ff

    That clutch is fucking fabulous.

  • Andrea Tange

To be fair, that jumpsuit is NO ONE’s look, as far as I can tell. It’s a proportion disaster. On the other hand, her flawless skin tone in that plunging neckline looks pretty fabulous. That almost rescues it. Almost.

  • Janet B

Her hair and makeup are pretty, up close she looks really good.

  • Stubenville

It just needs a bowler hat and she’s ready for a revival of Cabaret.

  • fursa_saida

You nailed literally every thought I had in the post (including the bag love), so I won’t bother to rehash it.

  • sk8tfan

Yet another member of the Jessica (I am a goddess and must appear as a frump so as not to upset the mortals) Biel club. It’s ranks are swelling!

  • l_c_ann

When a pursesnatcher goes for that purse, you’re going to lose your wrist for all time. (Just a gentle warning.)

Thanks to our uncles for the detailed photos which show the beautiful collar that gets lost from a distance because of the too much black.  (Why is there a belt and is there a front zipper below the belt?)

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Ah Robin Sparkles, I liked you better in your goth period! This jumpsuit is just sad on her.

  • Never heard of her.

  • libraangel

But look it this way, T&L: what if it had been a dress with a wide, A-liney, flowing skirt, wouldn’t it be 100% better? I would like it then.

  • I’m really liking the trend of bags and clutches that you can punch with. Next I’d like to see a messenger bag that’s also a scimitar and sheath on one of those DKNY models. I was joking when I started typing that but now I think it could be kind of awesome.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The bag is badass, the brooch is lovely, everything else is meh.

  • Rand Ortega

    That clutch is STUPID cool!

  • It’s a clutch, no, it’s a driving glove!  Nope on the clutch.

  • maggiemaybe

That clutch is bugging the bejeebus outta me…

  • thats a gorgeous broach, but it’s totally out of place here.

  • She’s channeling 80s era Jamie Lee Curtis.

  • I loathed it when I thought it was a dress in the thumbnail.  The full length view did not make me any happier.

  • Apparently, my fashion-o-meter is on the fritz, because the only things I *don’t* like about this look are the length of the pants and her pose.

I guess I’ll just skulk off to a corner somewhere.

  • guest2visits

The jumpsuit is awful for anyone, what with a sleeveless tux like top and the dropped waist and capri pant leg. What a mess.
And the brooch and clutch add to the dichotomy.  The hair and face look wonderful. The shoes are ok.

  • All it needs is a Hello Kitty on the tushie and it’s a one-sie.  Not impressed.

  • ccm800

    clutch is awesome

  • demidaemon

I actually think it is the angle of these photographs that make her hair look bad. I saw her on E-News (don’t shoot me) last night and thought she looked pretty. The angle of the shots were much different there. AS for the jumpsuit–burn it with fire an try again.

  • bd73

i feel differently. the plunging neckline is perfect for a long, lean figure like hers. that jumpsuit fits too loosely for her body type. on a shapely woman, it would be doing something. but i still like it on her. the flower goes against the edginess of the whole look. something more geometric would have put the “ting” on it. and why not a shoe with a chunky heel?

  • siriuslover

She looks kind of Brigitte Nielsen in Rocky IV actually. And in 2013 that’s not a good thing.

  • barbarienne

I WANT THAT CLUTCH. Holy crap. And I hate clutch purses. That one rocks the house.

  • Imasewsure

It’s her Taylor Momsen moment… oops…now it’s gone (thank god)

  • Frank Lithium

    Jesus, who is this woman.

  • Jason Bourne wants his handbag back.

  • I actually think her face is the only thing stunning here, or maybe its just because she is so pretty.  I was waiting to scroll down and see that was another Stella jumpsuit…and now I’m just more disturbed that designers are making fugly jumpsuits now. I will be sur to pass on that trend.

  • kathrineb

    It’s not terrible.
