Florence Welch in New York City

Posted on February 18, 2013

LOVE this look, Miss Flo!

Florence Welch sets out around the Lower East Side in New York City carrying a Mulberry bag.

Mulberry Brown Oak Printed Leather ‘Bayswater’ Bag

Well. Love this coat. We really can’t see much else and what little of those pants we can see is forcing us to conclude that we probably don’t like them. But y’know, it’s a lesson we relearn every Fashion Week in February: you can put on all the pretty underthings you want, but you really only need a kickass coat to make a great impression on the go.

Now THAT’S how a star should dress.

(How most of us should dress, but the purchase price and cleaning bills for full length nice suede coats is a barrier. )

  • MilaXX

I had a 3/4 length version of that in the 6th grade. Obviously mine was faux fur, but I loved it. Flo looks fab.

  • hughman

She really loves channeling that whole Nico/Warhol Factory vibe, doesn’t she?

  • butterflysunita

It’s true that awesome outerwear is the key to looking great for much of the year in NYC.  I’m just waiting for it to warm up just a bit so I can wear my cute wool coat instead of going around in the down sleeping bag coat.

    • lbl

I can’t with the sleeping bag coats, I’ve bought them multiple times but never worn them. I just freeze with my cute wool coats instead.

  • Imasewsure

Kick ass coat, awesome boots, cool shades and an even cooler vibe… you could wear your pajamas underneath and it would still work!! Well, she could anyway…

  • mhleta

I like Boho when it’s authentic, but I’m not feeling any of this. The coat is too big (see rolled sleeves) and kinda dirty (see pockets and flopping belt) and looks to me like it smells of a bus station bathroom. The bag–I can’t believe I’m saying this–but it looks really cheap, and I know she could have covered a regular person’s rent with for what she paid for it. The boots are bumming me out, too. Pony skin? Yeesh. This is the reverse effect of that person who can go into a vintage store and come out looking fabulous and expensive.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, I’m not loving this very much either.  It’s kind of sloppy looking, and she looks kind of like she’s just trying to scream BOHO too hard.

    • ceceliadid

Yeah, I think the bag looks cheap too.

      • missnutkin

yep – not a fan. There is something wrong with all the colours here. The bag looks kinda plasticky and neither ‘goes’ nor clashes well enough with the coat. The trim on the coat is not well proportioned and just a horrible colour. Also I don’t like the ‘sagginess’ of the boot above the ankle – which also don’t go with the colour of the coat – it’s an out for me

        • littlemac8

I should have read further down, missnutkin, you said what I tried to say, but you said it better!

    • littlemac8

I agree with your comments about her bag.  It looks kind of plasticy.  Maybe because it’s so empty, I don’t know but I don’t like the color either, at least not with the coat.  picky, picky, picky!

  • Qitkat

Great winter look. Really pretty color of suede. Though I’m not a fan of giant briefcase bags. Maybe she’s on her way to the tax accountant with all of last year’s receipts and a ten pound laptop.

  • Annabelle Archer

    Shazam bitches.

  • afabulous50

I’m sure the animal that was wearing that fur previously also loved his/her coat…And, it probably looked better on him/her as well..

    • Do we know that is real fur? Just wondering.

  • golden_valley

Darn.  I had a short suede coat with just that collar from the late ’70’s.  It hung in my closet until just a few years ago when I finally accepted the fact that I don’t need such a coat for living in the Central Valley of California.  I should’ve kept it to sell to Flo!

  • Excellent bag. I want one in every color.

  • ccm800

hate the bag. The coat is take or leave

  • I think this is an excellent occasion to give a shoutout to Mulberry and the fantastic Bayswater bag. I splashed on one in grey a couple of years back and use it all the time, mostly with a trench or a classic wool coat, it looks splendid with both and I love it to death. Here, the very same design works wonderfully as part of a boho look (which is, I think, a little bit too loose and sloppy, but nevertheless). I’m starting to want a brown one, too. Oh, and this: http://www.mulberry.com/#/storefront/c6668/8359/moreviews/

    • I’ve been lusting for an Alexa for a while. Mulberry for Target did little to slake my thirst.

  • Sara__B

I don’t know. The coat looks like a second-hand coat that was cheap when it was new in the 1970s, and she looks old enough to be the original owner. This does NOT read “celebrity who knows she’ll be photographed” to me!

  • Pants_are_a_must

Too many clashing shades of brown and red. She likes her autumn palette (and really, who doesn’t?), but there is such a thing as overdoing it.

  • Monabel

Made me think of Cheetos (not good.)

  • Great lady-on-the-go-in-frigid-weather look. I’ll take that bag, please and thank you.

  • kaycem

oh shit, i thought the pant leg was actually the top of a knee-high boot until i got to the last pic… now i see she’s wearing ankle boots and what appears to be brocade (sateen?) pants.  frigging great coat tho.

    • mhleta

I can’t tell what’s happening there either. It looks like pants from the back and bots from the front. Those aren’t boot pants, are they?

    • kimmeister

Either way, the combo is gross.

      • formerlyAnon

Oh, my judgement is suspended. (Since we can’t see the pants clearly) For my tastes, it could be good in a Janis/Jimi kind of way. Admittedly, that wheelhouse allows for a lot of shabby edges and questionable combos that current day BKs might scorn.

  • Look! Quickly!  A celeb who ISN’T openly carrying a cell phone!!  Maybe she actually has it IN the lovely bag she’s carrying over her arm.  Now that’s different!

  • Lilithcat

That coat is fabulous.  I love the bag, too, but I had to laugh because there is obviously not enough in it to justify its size.

  • Mightiadd

That “animal” is called a modacrylic polymer and its native habitat is is a factory.  You can also find them by the yard!

  • Louise Bryan

… you can put on all the pretty underthings you want, but you really only need a kickass coat to make a great impression on the go …

The only good thing about winter.

  • quiltrx

She is a goddess, and bitches should be bowing down right there in the street!

  • Every woman needs a statement coat

    • formerlyAnon

Or 3, if one can swing it!

  • If Robert Plant could be reborn as a woman, he would be Florence Welch.

  • I love that there is not ‘handlers’ nearby…..would gloves have been ‘too much’ to this look? It does need cigarettes and a small bottle of some inexpensive booze in a pocket to be complete.

  • The giant bag doesn’t hurt, either. She just looks effortlessly chic.

  • libraangel

    You rock it, Flo!

  • PrunellaV

Oh, how I long for my 1978 coat now.

  • melanie0866

My mom used to have that exact coat.

  • teensmom99

A cousin gave me a suede coat like that from the 70s years ago. It wouldn’t fit me any more but this makes me wish I had saved it. When Flo wears the right stuff, no one can top her!

  • The colors of the coat look great with her red hair.
