    Blanche Devereaux realness.

    • Jessi03

I read that as Blanche DuBois and it still made perfect sense.

      • poggi

         And yes!

    • poggi

    • tallgirl1204

Exactly.  But isn’t she about 20 years too young for that look?

      • IMNAngryLiberal

Just what I was thinking — she looks like an amazing 50 something woman…..only she is just 20 something.

      • CT14

Exactly. Everything is perfect for when she’s 80.

      • Cousin_Rose

Exactly. It makes her look so much older

    • TieDye64

Spot on. Exactly what I thought.

    • Calista14

I was just thinking the exact same thing. She looks like she is going to the spring fling at the community room in the retirement community

  • gabbilevy

The *only* thing acceptable about this is her hair.

  • Allison Harris

    Holy nightgown, Batman!

  • VeryClaire

Wow. Pretty amazing to get that lunch lady hair net look without actually using a hair net. Kudos for that trick.

    • ballerinawithagun

You provided the perfect analogy. Why does this stunning young woman want to look so matronly??? Don’t want her to look too sexy and trashy but please show those beautiful toned arms (at least) while you can. Suddenly you’ll be 40 and you’ll look back at this and wonder why did I cover everything up?

    • littlemac8

      Snood!!!!  Ha Ha Ha

    • StellaZafella

The look I think they might have been going for here originated in the late 40’s and, I believe, might have been made popular by stars like Lauren Bacall – at least for a short fad. It replaced the fabric of the Snood or net by simply tucking a low pony tail under – instead of pinning it up into a roll or bun on the outside.
Hence it was called a “tuck”…my mother donated the length of her hair to a foundation that made wigs for disfigured WWII refugees and this is how she wore her hair every day until it grew back out.

      • Great story. I love how commenters here actually know things.

  • Alyssa

Pretty dress (minus the sleeves), but way too mature for her. I don’t really like the lipstick color with the dress.

  • Total Bed Bath and Beyonce moment.

  • MaryanneGirl

Ring round the driver, I want to be around the common folk! Where’s my mink?!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Why does she have Mamie Eisenhower’s hair?

  • Its a beautiful dress, for a woman twice her age. And not her coloring.

    • StellaZafella

       Maggie Smith?    – Downton Nightie!

      • Pretty much.  Yep.

      • kimmeister

I was thinking Helen Mirren, but perhaps she doesn’t have the right coloring either (especially not with her current pink hair).

        • Annabelle Archer

Helen Mirren is much too kicky and fierce for such a septuagenarian frock.

  • unpious

Why on earth would you slap a visible zipper on this dress? Why? It looks like someone took a Sharpie to it so that we would all know where her buttcrack is.

    • demidaemon

I also think it looks really badly-executed and thus causes the dress to look cheap. Which, added to the matronliness of it all, doesn’t help Miss Rossum one bit.

  • Nicholas

Doesn’t she have somewhere to haunt?

  • Kayceed

That exposed zipper is a needle-scratch moment for me.

  • very “in costume”

  • Kyle Crawford

slutty grand mother of the bride…. someone needs to lose their job.

  • Jessi03

No, late 70s bedtime Barbie!  No!

  • sablehunter

She stole her slutty aunt’s shoes and grandma’s nightgown

  • schadenfreudelicious

is she attending a country club dinner??..in 1955?

  • BrooklynBomber

Congratulations on your Lifetime Achievement Award, Emmy!

    • kimmeister

I love how you could take the comma out of that sentence, and it would STILL work.  🙂

  • quiltrx

I love Emmy, but this is not my fave look of hers.  First, she’s got to get away from that dark/bright lipstick she’s been defaulting to lately.  Second, this dress is pretty but very aging on someone so young.  And it kind of reminds me, creepily, of the kind of gown/peignoir thing a lot of elderly women were buried in when I was a kid.

And WTF on the FUGLY zipper showing in the back?  It really cheapens the dress.

And I like her shoes.  The end.

  • SewingSiren

She looks extremely elegant. But someone needs to inform Global Green USA that their logo looks too “Girl Scouts”.

  • I hate the stripper heels, but otherwise I think she looks gorgeous.

  • decormaven

Whoa, that lipstick is applied on with a trowel. This unfortunate child has been rendered into Hedy Lamarr-lite.

  • mmc2315

Emmy!  What happened!?  We just saw you in that gorgeous Andrew Gn, and it’s like you are not the same person.

  • R. L.

This is a really aging look.

  • mhleta

I’m a big fan of golden age movie glam, but this has some issues, mainly to do with the proportions. The way the top fans out across the top adds bulk and makes her look dowdy. I think if the sleeves fit closer to her body, ie if the arm holes were cut higher, this would have been more successful. Also, this is just too much saccharine pink, which puts it solidly in Grandma’s Boudoir territory, and not in a good way.

    • ankali

Completely agree about the arm holes. My first thought upon looking at this was, “Too much fabric,” most of which is located in the excessive volume around the rib cage.

  • alyce1213

She’s in an aging Greek goddess dress –  way, way too old for her. And it’s peignoir pink.
The bright, dark pink lipstick is (oddly) sucking the life out of her face.
    The hair ages her.
    She’s been looking strange lately.

  • MilaXX

Very pretty, but borderline bridal. Still she’s making it work.

  • I want to hate this, but I can’t. She looks like she feels very pretty, and it translates for me. The way it spreads on the shoulders does evoke a little girl’s bedroom drapes, though.

  • MintaHallWriter

She’s so beautiful…but she looks a good 15 or 20 years older than she really is. This would work better if it were a stronger color, or even a more defined pink. And the bulkiness of the dress disguises her slammin-hot bod.  She’s pretty conservative a lot of times, and isn’t one to let it all hang out, but I can see Meryl Streep looking fab in this dress.  Emmy looks great too–but also much MUCH older than her true age.

She certainly doesn’t look BAD, but she would look so much better dressing appropriately for her age and beauty. She’s really one of the most gorgeous actresses out there.  Not to mention extremely talented too. I just think she could have done better.

  • Betty White has never looked lovelier.

  • Carly Warnock

Oddly enough this really isn’t working for me. Hmm.

  • I immediately said NO, but upon reflection, I think the color here is the main misstep. Imagining this in a midnight blue made me immediately say YES.

  • Old.

  • Lilak

I know I’ve seen Barbara Stanwyck in this (though I can’t imagine b/w era Stanwyck in My Little Pony pink).

The gown’s not unattractive, it just muffles Miss Rossum’s particular Qualities.
(I bet it feels like a dream, though.)

    • mmc2315

Spot. on.  I can just picture Barbara Stanwyck in some old black and white movie wearing this dress!

  • Imasewsure

Looks like Merle Oberon got some new lipstick… or maybe Greer Garson? WTF is she going for here? Not working

  • l_c_ann

Melanie Wilkes wants her snood back.

  • unbornfawn

I sort of like the hair and make-up. She’s all face here. The dress just blends into the background. Too washed out.

  • Qitkat

Ummm, I do love the earrings, but my grandmother wants to know why you added a slit and removed the back from her favorite peignoir.

  • That is a fabulous bathrobe!

  • ojosazules

I am liking the old style Hollywood glam goddessness of this. Not perfect, but interesting.

  • Kathy_Marlow

She looks film noir fabulous, I wish she was about 20 years older though to wear this

  • Nariya

    It’s kind of wearing her.

  • That beautiful dress and they put a friggin exposed zipper in the back?  I also think around the shoulders is just too much flowy fabric making her look broad. Could have done without the sleeves and red lipstick with a delicate dress.

  • Grande Dame in her pajamas.

  • Grand Dame in her pajamas.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

This meeting of the Oliva de Havilland Tea Club will now come to order.

  • hi, i’m emmy’s grandmother.  it’s nice to meet you…..

  • Nana!

  • margaret meyers

She looks like she escaped from a painting by Goya.  She can be wonderfully “not of this time” with her calm face, smooth hair and reserved manner, but I’m not sure that works on the red carpet, and it almost always makes her look fusty.
A fichu collar?  It’s been a while since that was the vogue, but then there’s Thom Browne with panniers.

  •  Don’t cry for me Argentina!

  • Dot

Holy wow. She looks breathtaking here. The lipstick does seem a bit garish and jarring, though.

  • I gasped in horror as I scrolled down.  How perfectly hideous!  How aging!  What a waste of a lovely young woman’s gorgeous figure!  What an enormous amount of lipstick!  What an unflattering, retro-40s hairdo! Meist-alCrighty, as my god-fearing grandmother used to say.

    • Judy_J

  • Janet B

Her lipstick belongs to a brighter dress, but the rest of her makeup is pretty. The dress seems more suited for a more mature woman who can go braless.
Beautiful color, but I am biased about pink.

  • jmorino08

Is she vying for a part in the revival of Sunset Boulevard?

  • rloliveira

    She looks forty years old.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Old school glamour served, but the color of the gown makes it look like a granny nightie.

  • Jecca2244

the dress has entirely too much fabric. i like her hair. it reads as 1940s chic to me. my school ladies wore nasty buns or short hair.

  • formerlyAnon

She’s wife #2, wearing – for some unfathomable reason – the late wife #1’s dress. Obviously, wife #1 was 15+ years older and at least a size larger than she is.

It is also possible that wife #1 had to make this dress herself from some exceptionally feminine boudoir curtains.

I like her hair, but it cannot redeem the evening. The inevitable climax of this evening’s social event will be the discovery of an oil painting of wife #1 – wearing this dress – to the accompaniment of ominous music. Possibly on a distant harpsichord.

  • what is she, a 70 year old?

  • j_anson

  • PrunellaV

    It’s Wallis Simpson!

  • mom2ab

5 minutes to curtain Miss Desmond.  (oh I see you are wearing the curtains, been into the brandy have we Nora you naughty minx?)

  • gsk241

Grandma working early shift at the bordello.

  • amaranth16

She should have left this for Queen Helen when she gets tired of the pink hair.

  • I totally want this entire look – as a dressing gown to swan around in with a bourbon on the rocks and cigarette (I don’t even smoke, just let me fantasize)

  • The cut is decidedly matronly. If it had been cut closer to the body, it probably would have worked for her. As it is, there’s just too much dress on her.

  • Zippypie

That is huge and ugly and Aunt Bertha on a bender.

  • Fordzo

Anyone else getting a Maria Callas vibe?

  • RedRaven617

She is 26 years old! She looks 46 in this get-up.

  • Ooh, Emmy. I’m not feeling this on you, girl. The top of that is just not flattering, it’s making her bust look much bigger.

  • PeaceBang

Oh my heavens. No, nuh-uh, no no.

  • Airkisses

    80’s daytime soap ingenue

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Noooo.  Very aging.  The blush color does look pretty on her, but the whole look is just very old for her.

  • Louise Bryan

Hard to believe the woman in these pictures is 26.  I swear she even appears to have crinkles around her eyes.  I she making a movie where she has to age or something?

  • The long sleeves are such a shame, because the draping of the dress remind me of Rita Hayworth in Gilda

  • She always looks so. fucking. smug.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    She looks 60.

  • kolokOlchik

looks like some sort of nightgown with shoulder pads

  • Sable Colby.

  • libraangel

gee, how can I tell this was created by a Greek designer? Inspiration from her country? Well. Greece is much more spectacular than this boring thing, honey

  • lilazander

Those sandals look hideous on her, the rest is so not her…

  • funereal
