Elton John Oscar Party 2013 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on February 26, 2013

Hit it, D-Listers!

Oh, we’re just teasing.

Hit it, C-Listers!

Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen

The dress is fine, but wow do we ever NOT like her hair. Very aging and matronly. In fact, the whole look strikes us as a bit too serious.

Danai Gurira in Tadashi Shoji

You WERQ that bod, girl. She looks amazing – and perfect for the venue.

Yes, we saw Walking Dead. No, we’re not getting to a review today. Sorry.

Emma Roberts in Oscar de la Renta

Pretty enough, but the color’s kind of drab and the fit’s not so great up top.

Emmy Rossum in Catherine Deane

Y’know… it’s actually really pretty, in a “I’m off to Lady Edith’s wedding; don’t wait up for me” kinda way but it strikes us as a bit … off for the event. Save this for the Met Gala, dear. You’re at an Elton John party. Put on some platforms and dust your face lightly with cocaine to get in the mood.

Miley Cyrus in Azzaro

After that night, she was forevermore known as “Mini-Charlize.” Which, hey, there are worse things to be compared to. But let’s face it: she’s more like Charlize’s more honky-tonk baby sister. Still, we love this look.

Nicki Minaj

It’s all right. We have to admit, we’re disappointed.

Nina Dobrev in Naeem Khan

  • Nina Dobrev and Miley Cyrus (WHAT?!) brought it to the Elton John party. They win this list.

    • I KNOW, Nina looks gorgeous and I have to admit (painfully) that I really like Miley’s hair now… sigh.

    • RescueMe23

      I agree 100% – who would’ve thought Miley Cyrus!

      • She looks good, okay, okay, but I still gagged when I saw her boobies on the cover of Cosmo at the supermarket the other day. She is still a child IMO and I can’t, I just can’t.

        • Glammie

She’s no more a child than many a model who also poses equally scantily clad.  That said, her look’s not quite working for me because she is trying so hard to look like a woman in her 30s.  The whole effect–particularly the make-up–is kind of aging.

          • I knew I’d get that from somebody, hence IMO. I know she’s over the legal age. I know models are young, too. I am equally grossed out by infant models when they show too much skin. I like this look on Miley precisely because while it may be aging, at least it isn’t overtly sexual, but I will admit that part of being put off by the tit shot on Cosmo was the fact that I remember her as a child in recent years, which is tough for girls that grow up in the public eye, granted.

          • Glammie

I read some comment by Keira Knightley looking back at some overly revealing gown she wore at 20 how, at that age, she felt she had to kind of flaunt her sexuality and now that she was older, she didn’t feel the same need.  Ironically, there’s something immature about the need to show how grown up and sexual you are.  Just hope Miley outgrows it–Hollywood does such twisted things to the self-image of young women.

I, meanwhile, am old enough to remember seeing Jodie Foster in Disney movies . . .

          • Candigirl1968

Given how heavy handed Miley tends to be with the eye makeup, I thought that this was a step in the right direction.  It wasn’t a light touch, but it was definitely lighter. And this is one of the most youthful-but-not-tacky dresses she’s worn.

            Forward progress.

    • I have to disagree. Out of all those looks there, the one that screams BROUGHT IT is Danai Gurira. I mean.. wow. Double wow.

That color is stunning on her especially when compared to so much non-color on everyone else. She has an incredible body and there are not many people who could wear that dress and rock it the way she is.

I’m kinda sad in one way because how can she ever top that as an outfit? I think she should go back to Tadashi and say “make this for me in every color of the rainbow, and I’ll just wear this dress everywhere from now on”.

And then I think she should rock up to the writing room of The Walking Dead in it, with a hot pink Swarovski version of her katana, and demand more screen time and character development, or off with their heads!

  • Miley Cyrus and the Goddess Charlize must never be mentioned in the same breath again.  Ever.

    • charlotte

    • ChiliP

Yeah….I just made a vow not to denigrate one woman in order to praise another, so I’ll just say that Miley and Charlize are about as similar as Chinese and Mexican food. Which is to say, not at all.

    • Vickiefantastico

      Oh my, yes!

    • Adriana_Paula

  • Judy_J

I’m quite surprised at how nice Miley looks.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Anna P’s hair reminds me of a middle aged Grace Kelly.    Miley Cyrus looks great – and she’s on my irrational celebrity hate list – so it kills me to say she looks rockin’.
But, in the end, Nina Dobrev FTW.  Because she is making it look easy.

  • everest19

Missing the most ICONIC moment of the night, Britney/Brunetteney shutting it down!

  • Janet B

Dear Miss Emma, check out Ms. Cyrus for inspiration.

  • Annabelle Archer

If Emmy is not on her way to her OWN wedding, that head situation is unacceptable.
Miley was killin’ it.  Especially given the venue.
I love love love Nina’s dress.

  • Nina and Miley look AMAZING. Looking that great, those two should have been at the Vanity Fair party.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Emmy Rossum– now shilling the Arwen collection for Sears!

And Dear Emma Roberts and Anna Paquin, you’re at a party with Elton John. Why do you both look like you’re about to drain a boil?

  • VioletFem

God, I love Naeem Khan gowns. Nina Dobrev looks fantastic.

    • Sobaika

      He does gooooooood red carpet.

    • conniemd

His gowns are are always clean and aesthetic, with interesting prints and epitomize the cliche that “less is more.” Have you ever looked at one of his gowns and thought “Oh no, why did you add that ______ frouha?”

  • wildemoose

I freaking love Miley Cyrus’s hair. It makes me want to chop all mine off again.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Emmy Rossum’s look is not quite “off to Lady Edith’s wedding.” More like “off to a casual dinner with the Romanovs”. That is a heckuva lot of bling for someone not just crowned princess of the world. Not even at the Met gala, overlords. Not even then.

    • tessasouthworth

As a lifelong russophile, I wholeheartedly agree! If you Google “1913 Romanov tricentennial,” you can see how eerily similar Emmy Rossum’s gown is to the frocks worn by the Empress and her daughters in their formal family portrait! I knew there was a reason this design called out to me, so thanks for the apt analogy!

  • Boys…please tell me you’ve saved Miss Britney for a WERQ!!! She deserves it this time.

  • teensmom99

I think if I look at the whole night (Oscars and post party) Naeem Kahn is the winner.

  • Trisha26

Ditto – Nina is gorgeous! Emmy looks like she’s been crying. Miley – no! Nicki…is Nicki.

  • charlotte

Anna Paquin once won an Academy Award herself, and now here she is among the C-Listers. Although being at Elton John’s Oscar party is of course not bad at all.
I’m sorry to disagree with the other BKs, but there is something about Miley Cyrus that always makes her look vulgar to me, even when she is fairly covered up.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

There are worse things to be than Charlize Theron’s more honky-tonk baby sister (actually daughter given the age difference).  I love this Miley so much more than the “always dressed too old for her years Disney Miley”.

  • Stubenville

The Apocalypse must be near when Nicki Minaj is the most boring looking woman at Elton John’s party.

    • kimmeister

She looks more interesting when she judges on American Idol!

      • CozyCat

I am fascinated by the pink lipstick she wears while giving her critiques.

  • formerlyAnon

I’d go with Miley Cyrus FTW. Even if she’s not as polished as Dobrev and brings with her the faintest whiff of having pre-gamed in the car on the way over.

Biggest (positive) impact to Ms. Gurira, most polished to Ms. Dobrev, as stated. Ms. Paquin is wearing the dress I’d most likely have chosen for myself, which means both that I like it and displays the reasons why no one’s accusing me of glamor.

Someone needsto tell Ms. Miley that PINK did this look way better 10 years ago.  And half the gay men in their 20’s did that hair 5 years ago, also better.  I think it looks very trailer trash wannabe, sorry.  And is Emmy Rossum going to her own wedding after this?   That print on Nina is to die for…..

    • Yeah, no one is ever allowed to do anything that reminds TRSTL of stuff other people did previously, especially since TRSTL apparently has no idea that Pink did not originate that hairstyle either.
The nice thing for Miley is she can’t hear your name-calling over the sound of how awesome she looks.

      • Natalie Bryan

YES! THIS! How many people take pictures of celebs into their hairdresser and say, “I want to look like this!” There’s nothing wrong with it. Not everyone will have completely unique haircuts…can you imagine how weird we’d look if we did?!

      • TRSTL

Ok…. (backing away from rabid fan girl now), I didn’t say Pink originated the hairstyle, I said, as a rocker, she did this look better and 10 years ago.  and I didn’t call her a name, I said her LOOK seems, to me, trailer trash wannabe.   (And now running away before she finds out I think Justin Bieber is a douchey little boy…)

        • Natalie Bryan

I don’t think anything she said could be characterized as either rabid or fan-girl.

        • Yes, dear, I must be a rabid fangirl because I called you out on being ridiculous. I can’t possibly just think she looks great in the picture and that you’re perhaps being a snob about her because of her age and origins.

Your comments clearly show how much disdain you have for young women, though. You have a nice collection of reductive stereotypes and dismissive categories under which you file them. I’m sure Pink is super-relieved that her rocker persona meets with your approval to the point you use her as a measuring stick for another human being’s personal choices.

I’m not a young woman, but I’m sure you have disdain for me, too. Perhaps, considering my age, the stereotypes you lob at me should involve chick-lit novels and a desperation to snag a husband. They don’t apply, but I don’t think you care about that.

          • TRSTL

I don’t know you, nor do i care to, I simply posted MY opinion on a certain “stars” look.  That’s what we do here, it’s not a invintation to be called ridiculous or slammed as being unthinking.  You decided to respond in a personally sarcastic and cutting manner, not me.  I would really rather not have any more discussion with you.  Period.

          • Yes, what we do here is post opinions. Yours then mine and so on. My opinion is that calling people or their looks, if you will, “trailer-trash wannabes” is ridiculous, snobbish, and tacky.

          • TRSTL

Please stop, I really have no interest in your opinions at this time.

          • In my opinion, you could just stop replying then.

  • Almost wish you’d have covered Fashion Critic 🙂

Enjoyed the run down! Can’t wait for more (what can I say, I love being spoiled, if even I’m sometimes a bitter kitten).

  • Nina’s is one of my favorites from the whole night.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

emmy rossum’s hair and makeup were unbelievable. i want her team for my yet unplanned, groom-free wedding.

  • Imasewsure

Anna Paquin is sporting Cloris Leachman’s hair from Young Frankenstein… not good but it is funny

  • Jessi03

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer have to be the world’s most boring couple.  They always look so sour.

    • formerlyAnon

I like to imagine that this means they are wonderfully suited, completely happy, and their marriage will last.

(I am inordinately fond of imagining ordinary happiness for people.)

      • Jessi03

That would make me really happy.  Thoughts on Ginnifer Goodwin and Charming?

        • formerlyAnon

You made me laugh! I am firmly for happy endings. Not always so sure *which* ending is going to be the happy one . . .

  • Natalie Bryan

PLEASE tell me you’re doing a post on Britney? I’m not even a Britney fan, and I was falling all over myself at how great she looked. Not just “in comparison to normal cray-cray Britney” but just flat out looking good.

  • JP

What’s with all the white? Are they road-testing bridal gowns?

    • meowing

I’d love to outlaw all white and all black gowns for Red Carpet events, forever more.  Mixed w/ metallics–fine.  In fact, I thought Stacy Keibler was the best dressed at the Oscars.  But, back to my rant:  more color, por favor.

  • sweetlilvoice

Love Danai Gurira! Never heard of her before but both the lady and dress are stunning!

    • MilaXX

       Michonne in The Walking Dead

    • gurira is just so, so beautiful. ive seen her a couple of times here on tlo, and she strikes me every time. im tempted to start watching walking dead, just to see her in action.fan bingbing is the other unbelievably gorgeous actress who i only know from her tlo apearances. they should team up and shoot some action movie together.

      • CozyCat

You won’t recognize her.  She looks so splendid here, and on WD, well, no one looks good (by design)

But good for her on getting an invite to events like this.  Shows that her work is getting her the notice she deserves.

  • ojosazules

Danai is gorgeous in that pink.

  • I have to say, Miley Cyrus is gorgeous.  I never noticed with her long hair… but she is really, really stunning.

  • Emmy is clearly headed to her Ren Faire wedding

  • JasmineAM

My irrational hate is flaring up again with Minaj and Cyrus. Both are try-hards. Danai looks like a goddess.

  • BrooklynBomber

I’m so lusting over that Naeem Khan dress (plus lusting over looking like that in it) that I can hardly stand it.

  • MilaXX

You know I don’t think this lot is half bad. Sure Anna should have worn her hair down, Emmy is dressed for the wrong occasion, Emma needs the bodice fitted better and Nicki needs a better wig, but no one looks like they need to go home and start again.

As for The Walking Dead post; the episode sucked, take your time.

  • Eva_baby

    Danai Gurira – DAMN, Girl!

Emmy Rossum – she just wandered in from a nearby fae glen to sprinkle fairy dust on us.

    Mile Cyrus. DAMN! Girl.

Nina Dobrev – she’s wearing my wallpaper.

  • greyhoundgirl

Ain’t nothing wrong with being Charlize’s honky-tonk baby sister!  Love that description of Miley, who has turned into a fashionista.

  • lrhg

    Nina Dobrev for the win!

  • nannypoo

The only thing I like about Miley Cyrus, now or ever, is her hair.

  • snarkykitten

Miley needs to tone down the bronzer. yikes.

    her hair is killer tho

  • kimmeister

Emmy’s dress looks like it’s too long in the torso for her.

  • CeeQ

That’s a lot of black and white on the red carpet – was Elton having a theme??? =D

  • fringebenefit

Nina Dobrev should graduate to the A-List just on the strength of this dress.

  • Miley and Eddie Redmayne apparently have the same hairdresser.

  • poggi

Danai (which my IPAD kept trying to autocorrect to Danzig) looks amazing.   That is a beautiful color.

  • warnerave

    Miley and Danai looks gorgeous!

  • I swear, if I am ever famous enough to warrant red carpet dresses, it’s going to be Naeem Khan every time.

  • Sadie-Ann

Danai Gurira  looks a little like baby Viola Davis in that picture. It’s fabulous.

  • Michonne? That dress is going to be no good in a fight.

She looks amazing. Love the colour and love it on her.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Darn it, Michonne! Stop being so awesome sister!

  • SewingSiren

All of these are pretty classy. I thought maybe the Elton John party was trashy after seeing what Heidi wore. I love the Emmy Rossium dress. She looks just like a Susie Sad Eyes.

  • tessasouthworth

    Michonne! MICHONNE! Squee!

Emma Roberts is looking more and more like her aunt!

I LOVE it when I think like you guys! As soon as I saw Emmy Rossum’s photo, I though it belonged at a Downton wedding rather than a post-Oscars party (the tiara, while beautiful in itself, was a bit too much), and as soon as I saw Miley, I thought “mini-Charlize” before I even read your comments. Da-yum, I never thought I’d see the day when Ms. Cyrus actually looked like a lady.

Naeem Khan sure knocked it out of the park last night! I could die happy if Nona Dobrev’s gown were hanging in my closet.

And speaking of knocking it out of the park, I want to thank Lorenzo & Tom for BRINGING IT last night and all day today. In gratitude for all your hard work, I am sending you a (virtual) bottle of 1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild!

  • surfergirl70

Nina Dobrev looks amazing.  That dress is perfection on her.

  • So um… Mylie Cyrus is turning into a beautiful stylish confident woman. WHAT?! Good job girl.

    • formerlyAnon

Don’t set your expectations too high – I think she’s been doing fabulously lately, but she’s 20. There are bound to be some ups and downs on this rollercoaster.

  • I was thinking Miley looked more like a mini-femme-Ellen Degeneres….

POOR, sad elton  thats the best he can get……

  • quiltrx

Yay!  I saw Nina Dobrev’s dress elsewhere and was begging you guys for an after-party post!   It’s SO gorgeous…and I knew you guys would tell me who designed it, which that ‘elsewhere’ of course did not!

  • CrazyAuntie

Danai, Emmy, Miley ans Nina – AMAZING!

  • guest2visits

One of the best looks was Emma Roberts gown; check it on Vogue’s site; it is exquisite in detail.
The Naeem Kahn on Nina Dobrev is beautiful also.
I think Sharon Stone is a closer comparison for Miley; I immediately thought of her with the back look. Still aiming for 40.

  • pulpytomato

Miley Cyrus and Charlize Theron killed the short edgy hair and simple white gown. They both look stunning! I’m also in love with Nina Dobrev’s dress. She started out slow, but she’s slowly becoming one of my favorites on the red carpet.

  • decormaven

Nina D’s dress is fitted to perfection. Did she attend the VF party as well? That dress would have photographed beautifully at that venue. Anna P’s look harkens to an old 50s B-movie reel.

  • Alyssa

Nina for the win! Ha, I accidentally typed wine…I guess it’s a sign I need some! 🙂

  • samo_samo

Before I even read your comments I thought “Downton” when I saw Emmy Rossum’s pic. Very Downton, but very pretty. Danai Gurira was a wow for me. I was very impressed that Miley got it right! She looked great.

  • stubbornthoughts

Miley looks great! I’m still part of the seeming minority that isn’t a fan of her hair. She’s got a gorgeous (baby) face for it, but I much preferred her with that shoulder length bob.

    Nina looks AMAZING.

  • stubbornthoughts

PS: Britney made a surprise appearance at Elton’s party, and from what I can tell, she’s never looked better. Will there be some T Lo commentary on Miss Spears?

  • LinXGUA

    Gurira’s back!

  • holy HELL does danai gurira ever look HAWT.

  • Caveats accepted, that’s still got to be a personal best for Emma Roberts. She looks super cute.

  • suzq

Miley Cyrus has never looked that good before.  Everyone dressing her…YOU’RE HIRED!

  • libraangel

OMgosh! I had to write names/take notes again! And will write comments again, but don’t know why. Anna – why don’t you just smile?!; Danai – too pink; Emma – What is that shadowy gray shape right by her crotch? Unfortunate.; Emmy – Hello, Miss Greece!; Miley – Oh, I cannot make myself write that she looks o.k. because Miley is like the Anne Hathaway to me. If I see one more Instagram or Tweet, I will barf!; Nicki – so conservative for her. And roots, baby girl – get Clairol!; Nina – I don’t know, I just don’t know
