Chris Pine in Ermenegildo Zegna

Posted on February 12, 2013

On the one hand, the style-blogger part of ourselves just loves that Chris is nerd-appropriate for the Nerd-Oscars:

Chris Pine attends the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences’ Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, California in an Ermenegildo Zegna suit.

On the other hand, the true nerd part of ourselves (and let’s face it: that’s Tom) is a little put out that someone thinks they can just put their nerd on and take it off, depending on the venue. True nerditry is a commitment, dammit, not a costume change!

Oh, we can’t stay mad. He looks utterly adorable. We suppose we should be pleased he didn’t wear a pocket protector or a Wolverine t-shirt.

But come on, they totally look like prop glasses, don’t they?

They totally look like prop glasses, but I would buy them in a New York minute and he looks great!

  • FrayedMachine

Oh sweet baby jesus. How do I get myself one of those?

And by those, I do mean a Chris Pine. Glasses or no – he’s pretty damn fine.

    • I’ll pitch in and share!  I couldn’t afford one by myself!

    • sojourneryouth

Me too!  Let’s Kickstarter this bitch!  Project: Timeshare Chris Pine.

      • Rand Ortega

         I’m in.

      • The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pine. I’d like to get on the waiting list.

      •  I am also in. 🙂

      • Leah Vildaver

        Count me in, too!

      • gabbilevy

        I’m in!

      • barbarienne

How much for one weekend a year? That’s probably all I can afford, and perhaps all I have the stamina for.

      • Alyssa

        I want in!

    • terpsichory

       Hey, that was a rhyme!

  • Frank_821

yup they do. makes you wonder if he’s got a spandex suit underneath :p

  • Sobaika

Did anyone watch the premiere of Community? They all walked in from their summer vacation wearing hipster glasses, taking them off one by one as it got progressively less cool. That’s what this feels like.

Not that I would turn Chris Pine away or anything.

    • MilaXX

I haz a sad for Community. I hope the rest of the season gets better.

      • Rand Ortega

It won’t. NBC fired the creator, Dan Harmon, ’cause he’s a major PITA. He got into a huge public feud w/ Chevy Chase (called him an asshole at the wrap party in front of the entire cast, crew & Chase’s family) & was never a company/team player so the network hired showrunners they could handle. “Community” is lucky to have this season to end things tidily. If it weren’t for the fans writing in, the network would’ve pulled the plug last year.

        • MilaXX

           I know. *Sigh*

          • Rand Ortega

Yeah. *Sigh*. RIP “Community”. It was (mostly) great while it lasted.

        •  You can get fired for that? I thought Chevy Chase was a well-known asshole?

    • I thought immediately of Community too.  Wouldn’t turn down CP though.

  • shirab

I think one of the finalists on teen Jeopardy! this week is trying hard to pull off this very look.

  • jmorino08

Prop glasses from Clark Kent’s wardrobe! But he could be my Superman any day!

    • misstressofsylar

i dont think it’s props though. i remember a video clip where they interviewed the director of Princess Diaries 2. he mentioned a particular scene where Chris could be seen wearing glasses, and he said it was probably the happiest scene Chris did since he could actually”see” with those glasses. how do i know this? i dont know. i guess teen me never outgrew the Chris Pine love.

  • Vaniljekjeks

If he had just a little more beard stubble, I think I might pass out at his perfection.

  • ToothCake

Oddly enough…in the thumbnail I thought it was Brad Goreski. 🙂

    • meowing

Sorry to derail the topic, but caught a quick ad of a new upcoming Rachel Zoe Project-anyone know when?

      • demidaemon

March something. After the finale of Top Chef, I believe. (Airs on the same day of the week.)

  • Beardslee

Yes, the glasses are totally goofy looking unless there is a prescription in them.

  • StellaZafella

    Hate the glasses.
    Hair’s too short.
    Stupid suit fits too well…

(…maybe if I bitch about him enough he’ll come give me a really good….talking to.)

  • They’re just a little too big for him, but I gather glasses have swung the pendulum from the tiny ones of a few years back.

  • I could eat him up with a spoon. No idea who he is, but he’s adorable.

    • StellaZafella

Rent the last Star Trek movie…the current one. He’s in breifs in one scene…I think you’ll remember him.

      • Bugger. It’s not on Netflix.

        • Rand Ortega

“The Captains” & “Bottle Shock” are on Netflix.

  • Kathy_Marlow

I can’t get past the hawtness to be mad about the glasses…

  • Funkykatt

He needs to put a piece of tape in between the lenses to be a true nerd. He is a handsome sort though.

  • I never thought him attractive. But in the glasses? Hella yes.

    • kschwarting

I’m with you.  He’s always been too pretty-boy for me, but the glasses make him a little more interesting.

  • Kimmu

I am pretty sure I’ve seen gifs of him around tumblr wearing either those glasses or similar ones in various interview settings, so he may actually come by his nerd glasses honestly.

I think he looks pretty adorable, which I would hope is par for the course for a space captain whose dad is Thor and grandparents are Snow White and Prince Charming.

    • Mb

I worked on one of his first films almost 9 years ago and he wore glasses on set occasionally.  So yeah, I think he sees with them.  Also, he’s a nice guy from what I recall.

As for the suit, it looks great on him.

  • Doesn’t matter to me whether they’re prop glasses or not – he looks HOT.

  • decormaven

Very fine look here! There’s just the right amount of hair product used, and the suit is well-fitted. Send this look to Bradley Cooper’s stylist so she/he can get some pointers on Hair 101.

  • Apparently, he’s near-sighted. So those may not just be for show.

  • PeggyOC

Nerd is to the bone, baby.

  • TAGinMO

    He looks impeccable. Full stop.

  • MsMajestyk

As a fairly blind person myself, I love me some glasses, but these are not right for his face.  The suit fits beautifully though.

The shots of Matt Bomer signing autographs a few week ago were a perfect example of a gorgeous man in well fitting glasses.

  • Zippypie

He can put on and take off his full nerd for me whenever he wants.

  • traceyishere

  • TropiCarla

    Yes please. Yum …

  • hyperionic

I like hipster glasses as much as the next guy but those are hella unflattering on him. He just looks like a douche here.

  • mmc2315

    Cute, but alas, boring.

  • Judy_S

I think he borrowed the glasses from Quinto.

  • Imasewsure

Mint in Box! Mint in Box…. cute fake nerd boy… maybe it’s his secret self and not an act

    • Rand Ortega

I’ve seen him out & about in LA & a few times he’s got glasses on.

  • kimmeister

You sir, are no Rivers Cuomo.

The fit of your suit is impeccable though.

  • unbornfawn

Just NO to the glasses. Otherwise, he’s WERQing it. He looks wonderful.

  • Rand Ortega

Yum. TLo, the geek/nerd in me must ask if you’re going to critique Zoe Saldana who co-hosted the ceremony w/ him. (I didn’t love her dress)

  • Nice, but a little on the Clark Kent on a date side. I’d have appreciated a white pocket handkerchief instead of the black, and I will never be able to get with the idea of a long tie with a tuxedo.

  • warnerave

    It’s a MANWERQ for me!!

  • DaringMiss

That suit is tailored so perfectly.  I sigh.

  • snarkykitten

Do those glasses even have lenses? I’m indignant.

  • oldbobbydraper

his glasses are functional, not just a fashion statement. if you look at other angles close up, you can see the distortion the corrected lenses make on his face.

  • He is venue appropriate, elegant and cute. Marriage material, in short.
And yeah, prop glasses, but CUTE prop glasses

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    *makes purring noise*

  • sweetlilvoice

He’s as hot as his dad-

  • maggiemaybe

  • Sara__B

This looks exactly like my dad heading off for another day at the office in 1962. Except my dad was clean-shaven and, believe it or not, better-looking.

  • another_laura

I’m just so happy about the cuffs that I don’t care whether they’re prop glasses.

  • *cartoon hearts floating around my head*

  • ZnSD

    omghe’ssofuckindelicious. nice job, Chris.

  • If the life of Victoria Princess of Sweden was made into a movie, well, he’d be a terrific husband.

  • Super_Red

I’m completely and totally with you on both counts. I feel like the actual nerd in me is winning though. ps, i LOVE that you guys ( at least Tom) are nerds! 🙂

  • The OCD nerd in me wants to straighten his tie.

  • Valerie Jones

He is auditioning for the role of Clark Kent. I’m totally buying it, btw…

  • Great suit but he could’ve used a pop o’ color in his tie.  People who wear prop glasses should be glad they don’t HAVE to wear real ones.

  • I’m a nerd divided. One part thinks it’s awesome to finally be acknowledged by the cool kid, but part of me remains suspicious as to the motivation.

  • Heavy dark frame glasses look almost universally stupid. Hate, loathe, and despise them. It’s a rare man who can pull them off well, and Chris ain’t one of them. TAKE THEM OFF.

  • siriuslover

“the true nerd part of ourselves (and let’s face it: that’s Tom)” Oh, Lo, how I love you! And Tom too!

    Chris Pine looks yummy.

  • guest2visits

Wow; he looks fantastic.  Suddenly I’m in the mood for a new Superman flick. You wear those specs beautifully, Clark, er.. Chris.

  • pookiesmom

I don’t know who this guy is, but I LOVE HIM.

    I never could resist a hot nerd…

  • Pterodactyl111

    Oh, be still my heart.

    • Melvis Velour

Thank God most chairs are scotchgarded…

  • Nerditry!  New word of the day.

  • MarissaLG

Those glasses look idiotic, but I see why he did it. If he didn’t wear them he would have been WAY TOO HANDSOME for us to handle and we all would have died.

Thank you, Chris- for saving our lives.

  • barbarienne

Given recent controversy in the nerdosphere over “fake geek girls,” I’m going to frown disapprovingly at Tom. If the current Captain Kirk wants to play to his audience, that’s all to the good, isn’t it?

They look like prop glasses because there’s no reflection or glare on the lenses. They look like empty frames.

He’s giving good sternface in the first couple of pics, but I love it when he smiles. Not sure why he’s in essentially the same pose in all shots, but it’s not a bad pose.

As to the clothes: I don’t dig a black suit, but at least (a) it’s not a black shirt as well, and (b) it fits him perfectly. Look at that little peek of cuffs around his wrists. So charming!

    • “Given recent controversy in the nerdosphere over “fake geek girls,” I’m going to frown disapprovingly at Tom.”

I’m also going to frown disapprovingly at you for something someone else said somewhere else. Give me a minute to pick something.

      • barbarienne

My point being, Tom, the concept that there are standards for being “geek enough” has been given a thorough hash for when it’s directed at women, and I don’t consider it any more acceptable when directed at men. IMO, Chris Pine can play nerd, or play cool guy, or whatever, as he pleases.

In case you missed the explosions, here’s one of the more notable skirmishes in the battle I’m talking about:

  • I know exactly what you’re talking about and it has nothing to do with the harmless joke made in this post. Lighten up.

And if you have issues with something that was said somewhere else by somebody else, take your grievances to them instead of trying to shoehorn them into the kind of stuff we’re doing here.

  • Natalie Marshall

I am in mental conflict over Pine and his nerd glasses. On the one hand, he really does wear glasses and he wears these same glasses to more casual/ non-spiffy events a lot. So they appear to be a actual-life choice as opposed to a studied accessory. On the other hand, the extreme hipster style of the glasses, which always seem to me like they have tape wrapped around the earpieces, makes it feel like more of a studied statement. Like, no sense in wearing just plain glasses or just plain nerd glasses, they have to be aggressively nerdy and the nerdiest of all the nerd glasses. The word “nerd” is no longer real to me.

In closing, I would kill to see him in a pair of wire-frames, because yum.

  • ccm800

The only successful way to wrangle the bush brows.

  • Louise Bryan

Note the proper word is nerdliness, not nerditry.
