Chloë Moretz in Louis Vuitton

Posted on February 12, 2013

At first we were all ,”Girl, that’s not your dress,” and then we were all, “Okay, maybe that’s your dress, but that’s not your hair.” THEN we were all, “Oh Jesus, this matchy shoe trend is quickly reaching Defcon 1.”

Then we were all “Whatevs.”

Chloë Moretz attends the 2013 Elle Style Awards in London in a Louis Vuitton dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

But it’s still not quite working for us. We do love that dress and we think it’s a pretty good choice for her, but the artfully tousled up ‘do just doesn’t fit her looks. Of course, that’s probably because she’s not done baking yet and her looks are too in flux for such grown-up hair. We just wish she’d relax a little with her style. It’s great that she’s so into fashion at such a young age, but we can’t help thinking when she’s 40, she’ll look back at this period and think she missed out on a lot of fun clothes because she was so intent on looking like a grownup.

As for the shoes, we’re just gonna shrug and wait for this trend to get played out.

I don’t hate the shoe-dress pairing. The angle of the stripes on the shoes provides enough visual interest that I think they work with the dress without seeming like a continuation of the dress. To my eye, the only real mistake here is the hair

… and yes, it’s probably all too mature for her, so she should give the whole outfit to me. I’ll know what to do with it.

      • capybara_cafe

And the pancake boobs. I think I might like the dress if it looked like she could breathe.

      • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

For me the biggest mistake is seeing her toes all scrunched up inside of those clear pumps. *staggers off to wash out her eyes with bleach*

        • kimmeister

Agreed.  Matchy or not, those shoes are just wrong.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

Instead of “Girl That’s Not Your Dress”, I’m going with “Ladies, These are NOT Your Shoes”.

        • Jennifer Coleman

The whole clear pump trend is providing far too much information on foot/shoe mechanics for my tastes. You would think the shoe industry would not want to put on display just how they are jacking our feet up.

      • http://www.facebook.com/darva.sutra Darva Sutra

even worse than the stripes on the shoes, is the fact that they are PLASTIC.  Ewwww.

        • gabbilevy

Yeah, could have done without the plastic. But in theory.

          • ballerinawithagun

When I thought they were just striped shoes I loved them, then the horrifying clear plastic close-up!!!

    • aahlife

Hair that is styled in a more graphic, linear way would be much more fitting.

    • ashtangajunkie

I love the dress – she looks great in the smiling shots. Just say ‘no’ to duckface!

    • Janet B

I don’t mind her matchy shoes except for the squished toes part.

    • 2ndhandchic

Is she always making a duck face, or is that what her mouth looks like? Otherwise I think she’s adorable.

      • hyperionic

She does have a large puffy upper lip.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It’s her face. I think it is like Michelle Pfeiffer’s.

    • Sobaika

This is almost great for me, especially if it were someone older were wearing it (I dig the mod look hard).

With Chloe, it feels like some uber-fashionista adult is calling all the shots and trotting her onto the red carpet while yelling, “Purse your lips! Purse your lips!!!” from the sidelines. The only youthful bit is the nails, and they are silly.

      • Janet B

Her silly nails are probably the only part of this look that is really Chloe.

      • poggi

I also really wish that wasn’t her “fashion face.”

    • crash1212

I love this dress on her; wouldn’t mind the shoes IF THEY WEREN’T PLASTIC (GAH!); and I’m not mad at the hair. I do, however, wish all this nail nonsense would stop…enough already.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=639062430 Sara Padilla

No to the hair, no to the duck face.

    • Ana_ragu

So…if she is willing to paint each fingernail a different color, why stop there? Why not do the same on her toes?  I mean, if she thinks that looks good–or cutting-edge, or hip, or whatever…To me, it looks like “I couldn’t quite make up my mind”.

      • Sobaika

Have you been on pinterest or tumblr? Nail art is a big thing with the young ‘uns. It can be really cute and well done, but this isn’t a good example of it. Especially in a look that is otherwise a 60s callback.

        • teensmom99

But v. typical of the young uns just messing around with friends to inexpertly paint each nail a different color.

          • NC_Meg

Yea, I think that’s a pre-teen thing. I remember painting my nails all different colors…tacky, tacky colors.

      • http://twitter.com/tangodiva Tanya Wade

This is exactly what I was thinking. That, and her feet look in pain and badly pedi-ed.

      • RebeccaKW

I personally like nail art, but I do feel that for adults, there is a time and place.  I would wear it on New Year’s Eve, but not to a job interview.  Chloe’s nail art is a bit of a mess, but she’s also a teenager.  I think it keeps her youthful.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I really love this…if I don’t look too close.  From a distance, first glance – love the dress and shoes and the toussled hair with her pout and then smile is fun.  Up close – her piggies are shouting out in pain and I’m shouting out in pain over the nails.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      Ok, I love the shoes.

    • Beardslee

Those nails are so teenage girl and the dress could be okay but as usual the powers that be don’t know quite what to do with a girl her age.  An odd medley.  Love the stripes on the shoes but they are plastic and TOO HIGH for a 15 year old.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

Too high for a 15-year old? Geez, too bad she isn’t wearing a nun’s habit, huh?

    • teensmom99

I kind of love the hair–not for this look but on her.  And as stupid as most of those shoes with plastic are, I kind of love these shoes.  Not all working together but what can I say? The heart wants what it wants.

    • imperfectlaura

Her face in some of those shots looks like she’s trying to have a pose-off with Lea Michele.  In the photos, where she’s not doing that, the look is better…not great but better.

    • MK03

I love all of this. And her. She is so freakin’ adorable.

    • ConnieBV

Yep, hair and shoes are killing her. Just think how much cuter this could have been with loose tousled hair and a pair of cute bright Mary Janes in a highlighter yellow?

      • kimmeister

Aw man, yellow Mary Janes would have been killer!

    • f_yeah_marie

She looks cute but I’m not a fan of those shoes.

Some of the GoT cast were at the event as well (Sophie Turner, Gwendoline Christie, and Kit Harington, who play Sansa, Brienne, and Jon); hopefully T and Lo will feature them too :)

    • MissMariRose

This reminds me of the time Debra Messing wore the black and white Ralph Lauren to (whatever awards show that was) back in the day.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

What if matchy shoes come back? What are you guys going to do? :)

    • insertclevername_ici

the dress is too tight across her midsection. i would LOVE it if it didn’t look like she couldn’t breath.

Why does anyone wear heels that high? when I’ve tried, I can barely walk. why do we torture ourselves so?

      love the nails.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s all about practice. I never have trouble wearing heels. ;)

      • khh1138

That’s the one reason why I’m *glad* those shoes are see-through.  As Jennifer Coleman said above, it calls out the shoe industry for exactly how much they are jacking up people’s feet.  We’re upset seeing them on a teenager – I think we should be upset for any woman to do that to her feet.
I love the rest of the look, though.  Let out the top of the dress a little and give her some cute flexible flats (they exist). I don’t mind her hair up, but I’d tousle it more.

    • Le_Sigh

i want tavi to befriend her and teach her to have fun with her clothes and not try so hard with it

    • imspinningaround

That’s not her dress:  It’s mine.  Send it to me.  I will give it a good home.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

since you highlight the manicure, can i say that i despise the manicam at red carpet events these days?  How stupid…

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Giuliana and the moronic powers that be at E! are the ONLY ones who like it.

    • H2olovngrl

I think she looks adorable. Except the multi-ccolored nails. Not so much.

    • Vickiefantastico

Okay, I know I’m showing my age (35), but personally, I LIKE matching shoes. I never got the “pop of color” crap. But that’s just me. Now, as for the see-through plastic shoes, I can never sign off on that, sorry.

    • amywinns

I don’t really care whether it suits her (though if pressed, I say it works just fine, especially since she’ll be doing something drastically different tomorrow).

More compelling to me is the way this 15-year-old is presenting an ensemble I’d love to wear. Which is the same thing all the designers and editors expect the teenage models they employ to do, so … mission accomplished, fashion industry! WANT.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I actually thought this was Miley Cyrus when I saw the first picture.  I like the dress, don’t mind the hair, think she can get away with the nails at her age and hate, hate, hate the shoes.  This would be much cuter with a pair of red flats.

    • leftcoastpickle

I love the dress, the shoes are kinda cool, but not together. Ga. But with different shoes, I think she looks fabulous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Duck face. EVERY SINGLE TIME WITH HER. Stop it, dear. It makes you look terrible. Flash that beautiful smile!

      • ojosazules

I’m starting to think she is genetically inclined to duck face- that’s just how her relaxed mouth is made?

      • Nina Banda

At this point, I think it’s clear that her face looks like that naturally. She’s had that expression in every movie and appearance since she was 7.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The good news is she’s the right age for those instagram nails.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

We always seem so intent on boob-squashing, but what about the poor toes. Sometimes boobs have it good, but toes almost never get to be comfy!

Free women’s toes! Does with the squishy shoes!

    • pop_top

I love all of this – except the duckface.

    • DinahR

The dress I love on her!!   The ‘artfully’ tousled updo is just not very artful — maybe that’s the problem.   She needs different hair and shoes, and I’d love this.   As it is I still think it’s kinna cute but she looks morning after styled like this.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love everything below the neck. The hair is too mature for her, and I want to smack the ducklips off of her face.

    • Judy_J

That is a cute dress, but her feet look positively tortured in those shoes!  And those shoes aren’t cute enough to make the torture worthwhile.

    • FrayedMachine

Definitely agree on the hair, makes her look way too aged. But the look itself, otherwise, I quite like on her (also minding the fit on across her torso as well, of course). I think it’s pretty cute and much closer to her actual age than what she usually goes for. I think what makes it look so much more adult is the shoes. They age her a good 5-10 more years. But I think the playful nail painting helps keep it a bit more relevant to her age.

But again. God damn that hair. Really not that good on her.

    • Anniebet

Just lovely, all of it, IMO. Nails, squished toes, matchy shoes, dress – love them. Maybe not the hair. About those squished toes, that’s what all those poor celebs’ toes look like inside those sky high, pointy toed shoes, we just get to see them in this pic.

    • rkdgal

Those nails are something she’s going to see when she’s older and wonder “why did we think that was a good idea?!”

    • Pants_are_a_must

In all honesty, this is a good look. But it’s not a good look for her. It might be a good look for Lady Mary. She’s not playful enough.

    • decormaven

Hon, don’t try wearing this type of iconic fashion quite yet. You’re a bit young, as evidenced by the candy color finger nails. Your friends are waiting for you to come back to the slumber party so you all can try some more nail art and eat raw cookie dough.

    • Tatiana Luján

What I think is too grown up are the shoes. The hair looks a bit 60’s for me and I think it’s fun. Wish she had worn flats, preferably with some color.

    • mhleta

This is a fabulous dress! The retro aqua color on her fingernail? Would have made a fantastic shoe color! She’s a bit young for this type of styling, but this dress definitely could work for her with a few tweeks.

    • j_anson

I like those shoes with that dress, actually. But I agree that she’s a bit young for the styling.

    • Kenisha Hill Phillips

I hate toe cleavage. That is all.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

that’s a little girl manicure if i ever saw one.

    • Annabelle Archer

I don’t know why, but she seems like an old soul type of person and that seems to keep me from being too bothered by her mature looks.  Also, she’s rarely super sexy too.  So while it’s not youthful in tone, it’s not pervy either.

    • Lilithcat

Oh, no.  Those shoes are awful.  I don’t care what she’s wearing with them.

And the nails are bad, too.

    • margaret meyers

Could it be that the freshly-fucked hair just doesn’t work with the structured and covering dress?  I instantly liked the look more when she smiled.

    • snarkykitten

Those nails…She’s 41 days early for Easter

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

      Her poor feet.

    • Zippypie

      Those shoes are FOUL.

Love the dress, just not on her.  I can’t believe she’s what? 15?

    • neofashionista

      Definitely not her Hair
Honey save that style for Sarah Palin

    • amaranth16

Yeah, the shoes, hair, and nails are atrocious. I sort of love the dress.  And I’m not sure why, but for some reason I think her legs are adorable – her posture in the 3rd and 5th pictures is just cotton candy sweet.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Cute dress, but she has neck issues, anyway, and this is making her short neck look like no neck.

    • Trisha26

Love the dress, love the hair. But not on her, too old. Hate the multi-colored nails and the see-through shoes.

    • ccm800

I think she looks kinda stellar

    • Imasewsure

Shoes fug and painful (to look at and to wear) but the dress is cute, hair is ok (but a tad too Joey Heatherton for a little girl like her)…

    • nannypoo

I think she looks cute. Normally I would hate that manicure, but it’s the only age-appropriate thing in these pictures so I’m willing to to with it. I realize she has a natural duck face, but I wish she would work on it for the camera. She’s talented and adorable so we’ll be seeing her for many years to come.

    • http://kburnell.livejournal.com/ burnell

Agreed.  Girl, that’s not your hair.  Pack it off and send it to Renee Russo.

    • alyce1213

Little Chloe turned sweet 16 a couple of days ago!
I love this dress for a 16 year old (please keep it away from Marion Cotillard), and I can forgive the teenage manicure and matchy shoes,  but I need to know what’s going on with her pedicure!

    • MilaXX

Love the dress on her and I would be okay with the shoes, if the hair was different. I think a simple pony tail would have worked here.

    • momogus

I have to say that I love absolutely everything about this look. I love the dress, I love the shoes, I love her hairdo, I love her nails. Full stop.

    • E. D.

Eh.  If the dress was 3-4″ longer, the shoes weren’t too matchy, and that manicure didn’t suck…this would actually be decent.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I love this look on her, I think it’s super cute.  The shoes don’t look comfy, but they actually aren’t overkill with the matchy match stripes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VW5XHSH45FBZ2ZEZJARYHILIZQ Leah

      Ducklips

    • zbkat

A pair of black Chuck Taylor’s would have been perfect here. Or a simple black flat. Hate the shoes.

    • butter nut

the dress is fine, its everything else thats a mess.

    • guest2visits

It is a very grown-up look; but it is very pretty on her. She almost looks alittle bit 60s retro girl with the stripes and the hair.
I loved the shoes until the close-up; it she’s going to wear transparent shoes then get a good pedi!
Actually the shoes are what makes it abit mature for her – Chloe could have easily worn less tall heels more appropriate to her age and
still retained all the pretty and all the style of the dress.

    • littlemissstrange

      She looks like Sephora.

    • VicksieDo

I think she’s adorable and chic, head to toe.

    • Pterodactyl111

The nails are very fun. Different patterns on every nail is a very young woman thing to do.

    • OrigamiRose

Ugh.  I want to slap her manicurist.

    • quiltrx

I can agree it’s all a little mature, but I really like this look.  She looks like she loves how she’s coming across, which is important with me.
I liked the shoes fine with the dress, really, until I realized it’s a different version of the shitty plastic Louboutins.  I’ve liked these the best of any of those abominations, I guess.  But being able to see that not all her toenails are neatly painted is disappointing.

    • demidaemon

She looks much better with a relaxed smile. Those pursed lips (I’m not sure they are duck lips level) are really unattractive.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I actually think this is one of the first times I’ve seen her look cute, age-appropriate, and comfortable. This is a great step and I think she looks adorable without trying to hard or overdoing it. And I even don’t mind the hair – not sure why.

    • m0r0

      Is she already lip pumping?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

How adorable are her nails? =)

    • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

      the shoes are fantastic!

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

i love this dress. i love the shoes, and i love them with this dress. i love the nails, which are fun. only the ahir is not working for me, although the colour is nice. overall, well done.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

have to agree..the nails or cutely quirky and well…young and silly. I can tolerate the shoes (the painted nails were cute) but that hair? yech… I can’t figure out if she is squinting for the cameras or trying to see around that bang?

    • Claudia Fernandes

oh my god, who doesn’t wear a LV? I really like the collection, but is everywhere!!!!!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=521523033 Erin Schubert Needham

Her hair looks a bit Kate Gosselin for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Love that dress on her and I like the hair as well, but those shoes are pretty damn tragic.

    • JulesKY

      She looks like a Sephora.

    • SublimatedRage

The dress is fine.  It’s the hair and nails that have to go!

    • lobsterlen

Stylist lets make a deal …
Less matchy match with shoes and more matchy match with nail polish.

    • barbarienne

HATE THOSE SHOES. “Let’s make shoes that not only torture your feet, but are so spectacularly unattractive that they really highlight how much your feet are being tortured!”

Apparently Torquemada has been reborn as a designer at Louboutin.

Also, I am becoming convinced that her lips just are shaped like that. No one could maintain duckface all damn day.

    • KELLEYKAT

I love that she is a young girl who is so into fashion, but if she is going there she needs to check the slumber party nails at the door!  So distracting!  She looks BEAUTIFUL when she smiles, but ducklips have to go!
I completely agree, she does need to find a way to have some fun with clothes instead of always looking all grown up.

    • jack mackenna

      Beetlejuice

    • peachy

she looks very kid-playing-dress-up.   …   not a fan.

    • warnerave

      cute!

    • Alyssa

Chloe, that is not your hair. Also, pick a nail color, not 5! Although that does “youthen” up the look. I like the dress a lot, and the shoes only bother me because of the plastic!

    • http://www.baddestmotherever.com/ Baddest Mother Ever

Brush your hair young lady and put Mommy’s shoes back in her closet!  (But the dress is really cute.)  Am I the only one who’s over this mis-matchy nail polish thing?
