BAFTAs 2013 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on February 11, 2013

While their entertainment colleagues were dressed like clowns and astronauts for the Grammys, the more serious-minded celebs were on their best behavior at the BAFTA Awards. No, really. We think the Brits must intimidate a lot of Hollywood stars because it’s been a while since we’ve had a rundown with as few complaints as this one. Sorry, kittens. We’ll try to be bitchy next time.

Andrea Riseborough in Vivienne Westwood

That’s an incredibly tough color to pull off and truth be told, we think the bodice looks terribly overdone, but as high-impact looks go, this is a keeper.

Anne Hathaway in Burberry

Chic and (relatively) understated. Her hair looks cute.

Elizabeth Olsen in Chanel Couture

Too much going on here. If it didn’t have that peplum-like thingy, we’d probably love it.

Gemma Arterton in Celia Kritharioti Couture

All the credit in the world to her and the stylist for picking a dress with illusion netting that matches her skin tone perfectly. The result is a look that’s more eye-catching than you’d expect.

Jennifer Garner in Roland Mouret

It’s an interesting dress – and she’s clearly trying very hard to be the serious, supportive wife of a serious director – but this just isn’t her dress. Too fussy. Don’t much like the hair either.

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture

Gorgeous dress. This is the best she’s looked on the RC in ages. Girl needs to keep things as simple as possible with her style. When she does, she shines.

Jessica Chastain in Roland Mouret

All of her dresses lately have been way too tight on her. A shame, because that color looks fabulous on her.

Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior Couture

Stunning. And let’s face it: that’s an awkward dress. But she’s working the shit out of it.

Sally Field in Antonio Berardi

This is kind of striking – and we remain in awe of her ability to wear such slinky, unforgiving dresses at her age – but we don’t like the proportions much. Also, her hair’s too limp.

Hey, remember when we said we had little in the way of complaints? Turns out? We lied!

Saoirse Ronan in Christopher Kane

A bit too mature (the hair doesn’t help) but a beautiful dress.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Elie Saab

LOVE this. Totally rocking the shit out of the chic ladypant.

Thandie Newton in Louir Vuitton

 Funeral-hooker.

Marion wins this round in my opinion. She looks like a giant tulip petal and I love it.

      • MarTeaNi

A bouquet of her on the table would brighten any day, and I’ll bet Marion Cotulip is a way sunnier companion than Saint-Exupéry’s Rose.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

I think I’ll use your name for her from now on, as I am certain I can pronounce Cotulip :) Thanks!

      • judybrowni

Really? My first thought was “yellow toilet bowl attached to her waist.”

But Marion almost pulls off a yellow toilet bowl dress, and that’s saying something.

        • Kristi Mitchell

But what’s with the illusion netting showing on the bottom right side?  It looks like the dress accidentally got pulled up and is showing the under workings.

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

But for that, I would endorse this look 100%.  But I hate that peek-a-boo thing; it’s totally misplaced.

            • zbkat

I may be wrong, but it may be referencing her movie, in which her character get her legs chomped off by a killer whale.

          • MissAmynae

it was a “thing” with that collection. JLaw’s SAG awards dress had a similar feature in the skirt. Not a fan, but darned if Mme Cotillard isn’t rocking this one out.

        • halleyg

Same here, my first reaction was “urinal” – and it’s yellow.

      • AudreysMom

What Marion C has that no one else has (though a few come close)… is confidence. She can rock the shit out of a paper bag. All you need to do is look at that face and those eyes. She is confident she’s the best dressed in the crowd.

        • Call me Bee

Yes exsaaaaaatly!  Plus, while she always looks cheerful, you’ll never see a forced smile or insincere look on her face.  She just always looks confident in a relaxed way.

      • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

         werq it, marion, werq it!

    • LadyCelia

I’m willing to forgive the limp hair on our Gidget just because it was so darned wet out that night.

      • alyce1213

        Really.  It’s clearly raining.

        • Kristin McNamara

Oh, I thought that was snow! Either way, bless all those poor dears’ hearts for having to stand out there, posing in that in sleeveless outfits!!

          • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It was sort of sleet/icy rain. Vile to be out in!

    • Imasewsure

You go SJP!! Also love love the top 2/3 of Marion’s look… not loving the bottom… poor Sally Field… there must be someone who can outfit her properly (TJ Maxx would be an improvement at this point)

    • Sobaika

My favorite is Anne Hathaway but I can’t take my eyes off of Gemma Arterton. Daamn girl!

Honorable Mention to SJP and Jennifer Lawrence would have been a knockout if her hair wasn’t so terribly slicked back.

      • Lisa_Cop

I think Gemma looks like one of those old fashioned barbershop poles but in taupe and black instead of blue and white. But I love both Marion Cotillard and JLaw. Finally some nice Dior looks from Simons.

      • duneboi

I think Anne looks just like Jada Jolie from the current RuPaul’s Drag Race in this photo

      • Susannah Perry

Yes!  I thought Jennifer Lawrence’s hair ruined that whole look.

      • Alyssa

I agree with all your notes!

    • hughman

      “Funeral hooker”. LOL.

      Sex Meet Under, fer sure.

    • j_anson

I can’t with that dress on Marion Cotillard. It just looks like something tore somewhere and the bottom half is falling off.

      • l_c_ann

From the back there’s a whole lot more of the netting visible.  Did this dress get created as a “dare ya” response for the J Lawrence netting show for the first awards (whatever show it was) when she tried to lift her skirt to walk up stairs to accept the award and only lifted the upper shorter skirt, thus showing the lower mesh that supported the lower skirt?

        • http://twitter.com/kawadjan kawadjan

Both Marion (BAFTA) and Jennifer (SAG Awards) wore Dior couture fresh from the runway.

        • Kristi Mitchell

Funny – I had the exact same thought!

    • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit Emily Dagger

I’ve heard the waist thingy on SJP’s outfit called a “cumberbund effect,” but to me it just looks… feminine hygiene related.

    • http://twitter.com/rmccarthyjames RMJ

I agree on most points, but I think JLaw looks AWFUL. It’s a great dress and the earrings are lovely and all, but her face looks like lukewarm tilapia and her hair is a greasy mess. Poor girl has walking pneumonia and she looks like it.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/VKJQ42RUJXFMD4RFKYETDDDV6E M

        Lukewarm tilapia.  Love it.

      • oldbobbydraper

i agree, she looks terrible – like she just got out of the shower and did her make up in the car.

      • butterflysunita

I had to like this comment, even though I don’t necessarily agree.  Just because you said her face looks like a lukewarm tilapia.  Love.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Sally Field should not be having to carry her own damn umbrella.

      • Sobaika

Where’s Daniel Day Lewis when you need him?

        • l_c_ann

He’s waiting for someone to carry the umbrella for him.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509434130 Michelle Le

yeah…the way she keeps breathlessly fangirling her, anne hathaway should be carrying the umbrella

i usually can’t with her, but even i have to admit she looks gorgeous

      • MissMariRose

No doubt. C’mon Brits. Wars were started for less.

      • Kristi Mitchell

She looks to me like she’s slouched over.  I’d like it better if she were standing up straight.

      • Carrieanno

You’re so right, but gotta love her all the more for it!

    • Pants_are_a_must

Marion was having FUN. Otherwise, Jennifer Lawrence and her bedroom eyes would’ve won this round. (Hathaway looks squeezed in a bit)

    • Elizabetta1022

      “Funeral-hooker.” Still laughing!

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Ced

“Funeral Hooker” no one has better one liners than y’all!

    • mjude

funeral hooker.  that made me snort thank you very much!

    • Annabelle Archer

For the first time in a long time I am liking what AnnE is serving up.
Gemma looks amazing.  She doesn’t always hit the mark, but she’s clearly brave in her attempts.  I hope that continues.
Jennifer Garner-Aflec finally went too underwhelming and too blah.  I can’t help but wonder if the bottom half was as structured that the look could have been saved.
J-Law is hurting my feelings with that hair.  The rest is pretty, but I’m ready for her to get some rest and stop looking so peaked.
Those Dior dresses with the trick construction and netting issues are just starting to piss me off.
SJP in a lady pant, works but is teetering on chic hostess.

    • http://michjeff-quiltersparadise.blogspot.com/ Michelle Young

Why does Jennifer Lawrence only look good when she has completely wiped out her breasts?  I hope it’s just the dress and she has not lost so much weight that she no longer has a figure.  That would stink, because she is one of the only stars out there who looks remotely like a normal girl.

      • kimmeister

She clearly has a nice set of mammaries but that dress has made them disappear!

        • Kristin McNamara

I was thinking the same thing! As a not-small-breasted woman myself, I’d actually like in on that trick, if she’s willing to share!!

          • kimmeister

And as a small-busted woman, I want to make sure to not ever wear a dress like that! :-)

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

SJP looks amazing, and Gemma Arterton — wow, I never realized that color combo could look so striking.

Not loving all of the origami bodices, though. Especially J-Gar’s.

    • YolandaHawkins

Bravo JLaw!  Hair, accessories, dress, 10s across the board!  And let’s put our hands together for Miss SJP.  That’s the best she’s looked in ages.  Well done!  And yes Miss Fields is pulling off the slinkier dresses and this might have looked even more fabulous if she had better posture.  Stop slouching Sally.  What would the nuns say?

    • http://twitter.com/mizenkay Nancy K.

Doesn’t Sally Field have someone to hold her brolly?

    • http://twitter.com/juliafoxtrot Julia Fox

      What? Jennifer Lawrence looks AWFUL.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509434130 Michelle Le

      marion…i love you.

      • procrastinatrice

You will have to fight me:) And Guillaume Canet, lol.  As hot as he is, I am more interested in Marion. She is just breathtaking and so wonderfully charming.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509434130 Michelle Le

i absolutely agree. maybe we can work out an arrangement…i’m happy with creepily loving her from afar.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

But, but, but… WHAT ABOUT HELEN MIRREN’S PINK HAIR?

      • Lilithcat

Helen Mirren’s pink hair got a post all to itself:  http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/02/helen-mirren-in-nicholas-oakwell-couture.html

      • kimmeister

It had its own post earlier today.

    • Judy_J

Loved Marion Cotillard’s dress till I got to that weird cutout just below the balloon effect. Looks like her skirt is falling down. Sarah Jessica Parker’s ensemble is the best.

    • kschwarting

That’s the best SJP has looked in ages.

There is some bad hair on that red carpet…I’m thinking that it’s due to the rain and wind.

    • MilaXX

Wow, 2 ladies wore yellow and looked good in it. Marion is wearing that broken looking dress that I hated when T & Lo posted the collection a few weeks ago, and actually making it work. That is some PhD level fashionista skills.
I like JLaw’s look, but I think the dress oddly flattens her a bit. I do love the slicked back hair and makeup.
Love SJP working the lady pants.

    • Zippypie

Holy shit.  SJP is my best dressed.  I need to recover.  I need Patron.  STAT.

    • ojosazules

Isn’t Marion’s dress the same one that made everyone think that Jen Lawrence ripped her dress at the Golden Globes? I like the yellow one on Marion much better.

    • kimmeister

Anne’s dress is cute but it looks like it has suspenders.
That isn’t Jennifer Garner’s anything.  It doesn’t even look like her!
I almost always want to fill in Jessica Chastain’s eyebrows a bit.
Whoa, that doesn’t look like Thandie at all.  Looks like a cross between Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jordin Sparks.

    • procrastinatrice

Wow, so much good stuff here. Really digging, SJP, Marion, and and JLaw.

    • Billie_Dawn

Gemma Arterton’s dress was freaking me out at first, but now I kinda like it.

That’s gotta be close to a personal best for Andrea Riseborough. She usually looks a mess.

The way Jennifer Lawrence is looking right into the camera makes it look like she’s trying to kill me with her mind. Still love her, though.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Cotillard’s dress: when I saw the couture show pictures, I was really hoping someone would be brave enough to wear this dress. Glad it was her. I didn’t like Raf Simon’s first show, but I think he’s really hitting his stride with his post-modern, minimalist take on Dior. I think because the recent collection felt a little less serious, a little fresher with more wit? I don’t know. TLo – no plans on commenting on the couture shows, or just putting them up for kitten commentary?

I am confused by the yoke/belt on SJP’s outfit.

I like Hathaway’s dress because I have a strong fondness for t-shirt silhouetted gowns, I don’t know why.

    • E. D.

Didn’t like SJP’s outfit at all.

That’s the first side view I’ve seen of Jessica Chastain.  The top doesn’t fit at all.

Loved Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard.  If anyone can pull that off, it’s her.  Well maybe Solange Knowles – she is rocking the color too.

    • aahlife

I agree SJP is looking good…except for her creepy alien eyes.  I was hoping she would back off on her upper and lower black eyeliner but instead it is intensifying.

      • ecallaw1977

I swore to myself I wasn’t going to comment on her eyeliner because it’s like beating a dead horse, but it drives me crazy and she just. won’t. stop.

    • Crystal

FUNERAL HOOKER. Glorious. I do love that dress Marion is wearing… the yellow is beautiful and it takes talent wear a dress that awkward and still look fancy as fuck.

    • ChaCha_70

Okay, it’s official. Marion is my fashion icon.

    • jilly_d

I really dig both those yellow gowns AND SJP’s ladypants, AND I’m in LURV with that Burberry on lil Annie.  But I’m sorry boys, I can’t get behind that sad tit-destroyer that JLaw is dragging around the carpet.  She’s one of my favorite young stars, God bless her, but she just looks…..sad in that gown.  And the hair is fug.

    • susu11

I wish Jlaw had opted for a softer hairdo (and a less serial-killer facial expression), but otherwise that’s the best gown I’ve seen her in recently.

Marion Cotillard is a goddess. That gown did absolutely nothing for me when I saw it in the pictures of the Dior runway show, but on her it’s gorgeous and modern.

Is Thandie Newton’s hair CRIMPED?! Oh dear Lord.

    • snarkykitten

Why does JLaw always pose like she just put on deodorant and doesn’t want it to stain her clothes?

      • LambeeBaby

It seems as though designers are fond of the half title look. Most bodices are cut so low that if the wearer dosent hunch there will be nip slip.

    • Coco Cornejo

Posture! Why can’t these ladies stand up straight?

    • Stubenville

Sarah Jessica Parker goes to the mall.

      • LambeeBaby

To pick up a prescription for Boniva.

    • Stubenville

WTF is that idiot wedge of netting over her hip on Marion Cotillard’s gown? Awkward is an understatement TLo.

    • girliecue

Funeral hooker. HA! Just hope this latest T. Lo gem doesn’t doesn’t come to mind unbidden because you just can’t explain snorting laughter at a funeral.

    • teensmom99

Funeral hooker! that’s the best.  Not sure if SJP isn’t kind of one too–funeral call girl, maybe (but in a good way).
And I think Saorise is just the right age for that sort of thing. Adorbs!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1266410766 Phyllis Craine

SJP really should wear pants most of the time….she did when she was younger and she rocks them

    • Warrior89

Gemma Arterton is beautiful.  Seriously.  And that dress is KILLER.  Loved the color of Chastain’s dress.  And Anne’s hair.  Kept feeling that JLaw needs to hike up that dress though.

    • GorgeousThings

SJP looks great, now if only she would ditch the 10-years-old eye makeup.

    • Mazenderan

Poor Marion Cotillard looked so unhappy between shots in all that rain.  Love the colour of her dress, but don’t like the weird detailing around the hip.  It looks like a little papoose thing.

Jessica Chastain’s dress is lovely, I think – the colour is brilliant on her.  Plus, she held her own brolly like a trooper.

      Thandie Newton just looks silly.

Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was pretty, but her eye makeup was too heavy for the rest of the look.

    • OrigamiRose

Marion Cotillard’s dress reminds me Jennifer Lawrence’s SAG malfunction – and hers too was a Dior, no? Was that the thing with that line, the “detachable or just looks like it” skirt?

      • MilaXX

I think the dresses were made in tiers or something.

    • BuffaloBarbara

J-Law’s hair is terrible (this look doesn’t work on a single human being who is not currently in the shower or on the beach), but the dress is nice.  She looks angry about something, though.

Gemma’s is pretty amazing.  Miss Anne should stick with this — she looks great.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I love Saoirse Ronan’s dress. It’s lovely on her. But Marion Cotillard is knocking it out of the park. Man, that woman can dress.

    • SugarSnap108

God, Marion Cotillard can wear anything, can’t she?  I have no love for that color, and the shape of the dress is just odd.  And yet I think she looks smashing.

      Also … funeral hooker!

    • Trisha26

Anne Hathaway clear winner here. But WTF – I actually think SJP looks more than okay (not her pose though – what is that?!). A first for me.

    • Carla_Charlton

Why isn’t someone holding the umbrella for Sally Field?  She needs better posture, by the way; that would go a long way toward improving her look.  I thought Jennifer Lawrence looked better than I’ve ever seen her.  As much as I dislike Anne Hathaway (just listen to her interview on “Fresh Air” — she’s insufferable), I have to admit she looks good here and I DO think she’s really pretty.  The top of the Jennifer Garner dress didn’t fit her bust very well and in the photos I’ve seen she’s doing a lot of the sexy pout, which is not good.  But Sarah Jessica Parker wins overall — well-fitted and completely appropriate.

    • oldbobbydraper

marion cotillard needed her own post so you could show off her amaaaaaazing coat she wore with this dress.

      • Laylalola

Did you see the coat she wore accepting the Hasty Pudding award? Love love love it.

    • RocknRollmom

Never let it be said that I do not give credit where credit is due—HOORAY SJP!!!  You look great.  Simple, classic, sexy.  DO THIS MORE OFTEN!!!  You look great and happy.

Ms. Hathaway and Ms. Cotillard are winners.  My love and admiration for Ms. Field continues to grow.

    • nannypoo

Why is Sally Field the only celebrity in the business who has to hold her own umbrella? Doesn’t she have handlers?

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I love me some SJP, and I love the hell out of that outfit!  The absolute winner here, and without a gown!

    • kathrineb

Marion, Saoirse and Anne win in my book.

    • littlemac8

Gemma (aside: who is she??) look like she’s put shoe polish on her head and then used it to draw on her eyebrows so I can’t really get too excited about her dress.  She looks 20+ yrs older than I’m guessing she is!

    • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

Thandie sure does look like the dead patriarch’s secret mistress or 3rd wife.

    • siriuslover

haha, funeral hooker. I loved the color of the Christopher Kane dress, I keep going back and forth on Jennifer Lawrence’s look, mostly because of the hair, but then if she hadn’t sleeked it back in that weather, her hair would have competed with Solange Knowles in height. Anne Hathaway and Gemma Arturton are my faves in this lot.

    • Call me Bee

Mlle Marion FTW!  She is rocking that color and that weird shape like nobody’s business!
It’s too bad about Miss Thandie.  Haven’t seen her on the RC for a while, and then it’s in Marticia’s mom’s tablecloth.

    • lilibetp

It was kind of hard for any of them to have non-flat hair considering it was pouring rain, the red carpet was sopping wet and the covered part of the red carpet area didn’t start where they got out of their cars.

    • Pterodactyl111

Wow SJP looks better than she has in ages!! Apparently “simple chic” is a thing she should stick with.

    • pop_top

LOL at funeral-hooker and SJP looks fabulous.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

Beyoncé needs to take a note from SJP on how to rock the lady pant, because the fit on these is perfect.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’m impressed with the ladies in yellow. Both are really lovely efforts. Annie, Gemma and Jennifer Lawrence look great. Agree that SJP is rocking the ladypants. And I usually HATE what she wears. Sally Field’s look has potential, but couldn’t she find a lackey to carry her umbrella? And poor (not really) Jessica Chastain. There’s always something off with her. This time, the hair and makeup are great, the dress is a gorgeous color and interesting but not too overwrought. BUT – too tight.

    • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

Is it just me or does Jennifer Lawrence totally look like Emily Blunt here? Can’t just be me right??

    • Dagney

Poor Jessica Chastain has an amazing body and she keeps getting thrown into clothes that do not fit properly.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/3DRRZR36XZSTQSLON4LXERKRHA Stephanie

Morena Baccharin would rock the shit out of Thandie’s dress.

    • betorah

Don’t like the dress on Sally Fields at all. It emphasizes the fact that she has no waist. A belt would have made a world of difference.

    • CarolinLA

As with most awards show red carpets lately, my first thought for most pics is “why are THEY there?”

    • Le_Sigh

SJP!  Carrie grew up!  Those shoes are FAB!

    • ZnSD

      Jessica Chastain looks pregnant…

    • bd73

oh, tandy. i love her so. this was an unusual miss for her.

    • decormaven

Marion FTW. That dress is fabulous on her; can’t wait to see what she wears to the Academy Awards.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      Funeral Hooker. And I’m dead…

Marion FTW, even though it has that very odd sheer part at her thigh, damn that dress looks good on her!

    • samo_samo

      Thandie Newton’s hair is beautiful.

    • Jennifer Coleman

What a great palette cleaner from the Grammys dresses messes. Although poor Thandie was more suited to the Grammys than the BAFTAS.

    • http://favouriteworkofart.wordpress.com/ Helen

      ‘Funeral hooker’…..love you guys ;)

      • leftcoastpickle

        i know!!! :D

    • Nancy Dunn

Jennifer Lawrence for the win! And SJP – I can’t even look at pics of her anymore. She uses so much eyeliner, her eyes are gone! Didn’t her makeup artist ever hear no bottom liner on women over 40! It’s aging and makes your eyes tiny!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

      SJP FTW!

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Apparently Ben & Jen were fistycuffs at dinner afterwards. Prob wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t carried on like George Clooney was his wife all evening. And she could have done better than a few napkins over a sports bra.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Whoever decided to give J-law the Bradley Cooper hair treatment was smart. A girly ‘do would have been a Disney disaster.
