Anne Hathaway in Prada

Posted on February 07, 2013

Putting aside all our normal totally-entertaining-but-also totally-made-up bullshit about how she’s a grasping, scheming, clawing harpy of ambition, desperate for an Oscar and poledancing her way across several continents, we just have to say, she looks really pretty here:

Anne Hathaway attends the premiere of ‘Les Misérables’ in Paris in a Prada gown.

Sure, there’s a little bit of wrinkle and pucker, but it’s amazing she showed up looking so relatively unruffled. We’re thinking they strapped her to a gurney and she rode there in an ambulance, on her back. Then they just wheeled her out and tipped her onto her feet.

Seriously, the detail at the bustline is pretty and she made a smart choice with her growing-out hair: she pretty much left it alone to do its thing. Her hair’s at that cranky stage where it starts growling and snapping at her if she tries to do anything fussy with it.

Hate the fit in the bust, and I wish it wasn’t so shiny. But she does look very pretty.

    • kikisayshi

It’s very pretty, except for the nipple darts.

      • foodycatAlicia

Yes! What’s wrong with a regular old dart? Why did they have to give her nipples ears?

        • misstressofsylar

not ears. they remind me of the nostrils of a hippo.

          • kikisayshi

They’re TOTALLY hippo nostrils! Sometimes I wonder what designer looks at things like that and says, “Man that looks awesome.”

            • Jennifer McClory

“Hippo-nose tits.”  Please don’t let this become a thing.

            • MikeW_Vegas

ROFL..   Diet coke across the keyboard first thing in the morning.. GREAT way to start the day!

            • Deb_Lynn

But i do like the way it sounds: hippo nipples. So if it did become a thing, i’d enjoy when it happened….

            • MoHub

            • misstressofsylar

designers – they’re not like us.

            • demidaemon

There is probably some bong-smoking influence in these cases.

            • kikisayshi

          • foodycatAlicia

Oh yes! I was thinking mouse ears but hippo nostrils is better.

          • MoHub

Hey! I happen to like hippos!

            Just not on actresses’ chests.

          • kathryn_dc

             LOL Cannot unsee!!

        • StellaZafella

N-I-P (See ya real soon!) P-L-E (Why? because we like you!) D-A-R-T-S! Nipple darts!

    • capybara_cafe

She looks really nice in it, it’s a great color for her. At first I thought I didn’t like the trim at the top, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.
I don’t love all the lines where whoever it was let the hem out at the bottom, they could have done a better job of pressing that out for her.

      • Dorothy & Michael n/a

Ain’t that the truth?!  Where’s the seamstresses’ steamer?!  (assuming the sewing maven was a gal I mean…)

She looks very nice here – even the expression on her face has changed from “I’m the obvious winner, dammit!” to “I sure hope I get what I want in 2.5 weeks!”

      • 3boysful

The hem? I wouldn’t go to a PTA meeting with a let-down like that.

I also wish Annie would stand a little straighter.  (ARGH!  I am now officially my mom.)

        • La Gatta, Feline of Destructio

Yes, yes you are. (Both are things my own mother would say.)

      • Jackie4g

Its satin and you can’t use a vinegar/water treatment on that satin without getting water marks. In short, there is nothing to be done about the hemline crease, except using another, not previously hemmed, dress.

        • capybara_cafe

That’s actually not entirely true. I’ve steamed hem lines out of cheap, crappy costume satin and nice, crepe backed satin without watermarking the fabric.

    • Lily

I don’t normally like satin, ESPECIALLY pink satin, but this looks really nice on her.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

Man I am not a fan of this at all. I’ll reserve the “always a bridesmaid” sentiment, but this fabric always reminds me of a bridesmaid dress.

Well, I like it from the neck up…

      • Dollsaga

I thought it was senior prom party dress from Sear’s

        • AthenaJ

LOL I got my senior prom dress from Sears. Floor length shiny light blue/purple gown… yeah!!!

    • Denocte

No, I don’t feel this dress at all! The fit around the bust is just too much off for me. droopy and wrinkly, ugh.

    • Kiltdntiltd

I can’t say I’m loving the way those exterior tucks seem to be saying, “Here, My nipples are right HERE!”  Other than that, though, I think the shape and color of this are great on her.  She looks relaxed yet elegant.  Nicely done.

      • mshesterp

And they’re not just darts, they’re like…dart florets or something.  Very weird.  But overall I think she looks very pretty, if I don’t enjoy all of the outfit’s parts.

        • Kiltdntiltd

Actually, now that I look more closely, they are inverse pleats that are only sewn together at one point, allowing the upper and lower parts to spread.  It appears as though the bust has slid down a bit, creating that awkwardness we are all seeing.  Perhaps a TLo styled hoik is in order.

          • MilaXX

but that hem is just as bad

            • Kiltdntiltd

It looks as though it was a rush job to lengthen it, and they didn’t have either time or the right equipment to press it out properly so the old hemline didn’t show.

        • ballerinawithagun

The fitting technique is not definite enough. This like a weird combination of darts and gathers. I’ve done bodices both ways but you have to make a choice! Love the basic dress though. I can just feel that gorgeous heavy silk. Looks very Parisian.

    • MilaXX

Color is great, hair and makeup are lovely, but dress and those weird inverted pleats and too obvious hem aren’t working for me.

      • filmcricket

My exact thoughts. Thank you for saying it so I didn’t have to. :)

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Not sure about the nipple-puckers but it’s real pretty except for that!

    • Cindi Williams

I hate to say it but it looks home-sewn.

      • stardust462

Seriously, it looks like something that would be in the bottom 3 of a Project Runway challenge.

    • PeggyOC

Looks like a home ec project, especially around the bust.  But it’s a good color on her.

    • lehen

      so shiny…

    • TRSTL

Huh… love the color and the concept of the column dress on her and she does look very pretty in the face and hair but thoses totally weird nipple loops are bizzare.

    • Corsetmaker

I like the colour, the trim and the overall simplicity of the shape gives her a very Audrey Hepburn vibe which works with her hair.

However I hate those inverted pleats at the bust and how badly the pleats are pressed below the bust and just generally. The bust fitting is awful and makes it look really amateurish.

    • Annabelle Archer

Satin is so lovely and touchy pleasant in person, but always photographs so cheaply, no?  Either way, I’m happy it’s a beautiful color, and it’s not tummy area ambiguously coy.  Well done AnnE.

    • Carina

Channeling Audrey Hepburn and looking lovely. This is the Anne Hathaway I know and love.

    • NC_Meg

I love the shape and the bustline but the pink satin looks so cheap and prom-y.

    • Krysta

She’s beautiful.  The dress is awful.  Pink satin gift bag, badly modded in the ten minutes before the red carpet to contain boobs.  I mean seriously, look at those weird little fabric nipples.  BAD.  BADBADBAD.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Very pretty color, but it does remind me a bit of a dress I wore for a Winter Formal dance in high school (late 90s)

    • Svet Lpchv

Weirdest bustline, weird shiny colour too…Are you guys doing a social experiment to check how many of your followers would immediately agree with whatever you say? I for the most part do but this dress is just-too-wrong.

    • pookiesmom

I really want her to keep her short hair. It looks amazing.

    • Little_Olive

Ah, the always underestimated Evils of Satin.

I get where TLo is going, but still no. A shame.

    • Nazzzy

Man do I not like this.

    • Allyson Wells

I think that’s a terrible dress… looks like prom and the boob area is weird and unflattering.

    • PeaceBang

I love it at a quick glance — it makes a beautiful first impression – and then I look more closely and the construction/fit issues are all oopsy. Those nipple tucks are very distracting. Shame.

    • Bert Keeter

The basic idea of dress is great but the execution of the bodice and darting is very odd….I’d love a pic of this at the end of the evening….bet it looks like a wrinkled mess!

    • E. D.

That pucker tuck wouldn’t fit anyone so I’m giving it a pass.

    • nannypoo

I want to like this but I can’t. The bodice is awful and she is way too pale.

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

Sorry, but the dress looks like a handmade prom or bridesmaid’s dress. Ugh.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

That is a beautiful color on her!

    • Jeff Warhurst

Haha; the dress looks like it was made with MagnaTac out of costume satin.  She’s gorgeous though.

    • Alessia M

ANNE. GIRL. I feel you. My hair is doing the exact same thing. TLo, you nailed it. My ‘do is totally crabby. Anne’s pulling it off, though, and I just look a fool.

    • NurseEllen

Boy, this does not look like a designer dress to me.  I think Butterick had a pattern for this in the ’60s.  Agreed that Miss Annie looks beautiful, and agree about her hair (is there anything more frustrating than the period of waiting for a haircut to grow out?), but this gown is just dumb.

      • Marie Fessler

This.  I shudder to think what Prada charges for that dress, and I’m even imagining a whole village of children that could have been fed with the money instead of “designing” this puckerific pink disaster.

        • NurseEllen

I think I may make “pukerific” my new go-to adjective!

    • Lilithcat

Those weird bulging darts at the bustline ruin the dress.

    • B_C_J

The color is beautiful. The dress is perfectly hemmed. However the darts at the bustline are seriously awful, so much so that I think they absolutely ruin the dress.

      • alyce1213

When you can see the work and the line of the previous hem, it’s not perfectly hemmed.

    • 4JJ

Great colour and lines. Have to join in on the awful bustline dart chorus – makes her breasts look both small and droopy.

    • Judy_J

I too am joining the chorus with regard to those awful darts in the bust.  Looks tacky and poorly made.

    • EverybodysStarling

Her nipple-area looks like hippo ears.

    • Ruth Preston

Is it just me, or does it look like they had to let it out at the bottom to account for her height?

      • 4JJ

You’re right! Good eye. You can see where they let down the hem, and then it looks like even the initial hem turn had to be let down. Maybe her other dress got lost and this was a last-minute scramble?

    • butter nut

the tits on that thing are atrocious.  other than that, i like the color on her.

    • Gabriella M

In re her hair: I think she had a trim lately, just at the bottom of her hair (letting the top grow out first to match the bottom). She doesn’t have the wonky fluffy nigh-mullet that I have going on (I’m due for a haircut soon, if not already). So that helps a lot.

I just don’t like this fabric even slightly. The color and trim are pretty, though.

    • greyhoundgirl

The classic look suits her.  But yeah–the boobs look like tortellini.

    • KQ67

      Oscar nominee Barbie dress.

    • Kristy Evans

GROSS. This looks like a home-made prom dress.

    • Meredith Walsh

You just made me feel so much better about totally ignoring my once pixie now shag.

    • Jill Parker

Really? I think it’s horrid. She looks pretty from the neck up, but man, that’s a prom dress gone WRONG.

    • Belvane

I’m sorry, but that bodice looks like Jar Jar Binks.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I think that is totally her dress and nobody else’s.

    • alyce1213

      Nipple puckers?  Really?

    • BrooklynBomber

She does look pretty. She also looks about 7 feet tall. Is she standing on a box?

    • stubbornthoughts

The puckering is stupid but other than that, totally agree. She looks beautiful.

    • Kevin VanOrd

I am surprised T-Lo likes it so much. The nipple-darts are hideous, and the let-down of the hem is noticeable and tacky. Why the darts/seams/pleat in a fabric already prone to wrinkles? All it does is lead to a greater sense of sloppiness. I suppose I like the bust embellishment, but otherwise, there’s not a whole lot to get behind

    • MinAgain

She looks pretty; that dress is awful.  The only thing that elevates it from wrapping a pink satin sheet around her and bedazzling the top edge are the darts/pleats at the waist, and they’ve been dreadfully executed.

    • Monday1900

I think this looks cheap — like a barbie dress cheap.  Color, fabric, sewing–all not good.  Hair and makeup are great though.

    • kschwarting

She looks pretty, but that’s a last-minute tailoring job if I’ve ever seen one.

    • mmc2315

Oh, I do wish she’d keep her hair in that short chic cut.  I’ll try to accept and move on, though!

She DOES look very pretty, from very far away.  The dress is horrid up close.

    • Zippypie

I’m surprised you boys like this one.  Had coffee yet?  The dress is doing her boobage no favors whatsoever and the fabric is bridesmaid Barbie tacky.  The darts under each breast are off – her boobs are doing one thing, the darts another.  Anyway, hair and makeup do look very pretty.  I like when she brushes her hair forward with the short hair – gives her more style and edge instead of the PTA mom look when its combed back.

    • traceyishere

      Bad nipples.

    • Deb Oswald

That just looks like someone doesn’t know how to sew well!

    • another_laura

The color is great on her and I like the jeweled band, but I am really really WAY over satin and ill-fitting bodices.  And that is one ill-fitting bodice.  Good for her getting back out of the edgy stuff, which doesn’t really go with the doe eyes and her perceived image of sweetness, you know what I mean?  Nice try, Miss Anne, but I’m glad she backed off.

    • Janet B

      Very pretty look for her.
      Too bad about the fabric.

    • RocknRollmom

Ok, I am not anywhere near as knowledgeable as many of the fashion/design/seamstress experts on this site (i.e., KiltdnTiltd–I always look for his comments re these issues).  However, even I noted, after going ohhh pretty, the awful hem situation.  That bothered me even more than the weird darts.  I could live with those as a “design choice” but the hem just looks bad.  She looks lovely and the color is great (and I usually hate shiny satin) but the hem.  I would expect better from Prada.

    • DominoEstella

vagina boobs.. I hate that top of that dress.

    • MannahattaMamma

“hippo-nose tits” is perfect. it’s a sort of pretty dress if you like shiny shiny shiny but the badly fitting bust is like something straight outta the Macy’s Junior Prom section.  I bet she’s got a corsage stashed somewhere nearby.

    • libraangel

Yeah, you’re right: she is pretty here

    • formerlyAnon

She looks lovely. Thankfully she gave up whatever she was attempting with her Andrew Garfield-esque hair the other day.

I do have to wonder why they wear satin, surely the stylists know if the clients don’t what happens to satin under bright lights. In any other fabric, the rumply bits would be very hard to  notice.

    • cowper

    • Rain Jezek

It’s so easy for this shade of pink to scream “Bubblegum Princess!” but she is glowing in it, she looks wonderful.

    • SassieCassy

    • Rachelle Neame

This pink color really reminds me of Fantine’s dress- wonder if it’s on purpose? It’s definitely in the same category of pink as her Fantine costume.

      • OrigamiRose

Cripes.  I don’t even remember that.  I just remember grey.

    • pop_top

I think she looks pretty, but I guess I expect more of Prada? I like the detail at the bustline, but I feel like they just attached it to some left over fabric that happened to match.

Maybe it would look different to me in person.

    • sleah_in_norcal

she looks lovely, but that lip color is all wrong.  leaning too much towards the orange.

    • Lauren Lynch Fox

    • oohsparkley!

That is such a cheap looking dress. Hate those non-darts! She looks good from a distance.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She’s got everything going for her (she was born to wear that color) but that puckering is rank amateur level bullshit.  WTF?

    • Dagney

The bust line detail is not pretty.  It looks like bad tailoring.  Can you imagine a PR contestant trying that?

    • Anniebet

Love the shape and color of the dress and the gemmed detail at the bosom. HATE those inside out darts. They give her bust line a very unfortunate droopy, loopy look. It’s like a high school home ec project.

    • guest2visits

Very pretty; nice color for a change, also.

    • Tom Markiewicz

the dress looks like a project runway entry… in the bottom three. her hair and make-up look pretty though!

    • MissAmynae

The more I see it, the more I hate it. I can’t get past the nipple-things. Add to that the terrible fit in the bust, its wrinkled, and bridesmaid pink satin. If it was just below the knee, that would be an improvement, but I still just hate it.

    • ojosazules

Those rose bud nipples effed up.

    • margaret meyers

Great color and silhouette for her, but the pink satin comes off looking so unsubtle and home-sewn. And I go back and forth on the bust line — I like that they have achieved a soft, natural shape on a dress style that is usually fitted and stiff across the breasts, but I really hate that inverted/open dart.

    • Martha Anderson

those darts are simply too odd and , perhaps, a bit too Mulva looking

    • Monabel

Can’t share your love for the bust detail at all. Strictly amateur. Nice color, but not enough to redeem the frock.

    • Peeve

Just step away from those weird boob darts…

    • glennethph

It looks like her nipple areas are pink blackholes that are sucking in fabric and pretension.

    • BrightsideSusan

Agree with TLo and the dress comments – but I think she derves that Oscar – her performance was stunning.  The single best thing in a long movie full of talented people.

    • kathrineb

She does look pretty here I love the understated make up and hair. I like the hot pink colour when paired with the short hairstyle. I do think she pulls off the haircut really well.
I am not a fan of how shiny the dress is but at least its not a super-fitted. A tight fitted dress in satin is rarely flattering even on the nicest figure.

    • Mandy Mershon

The detail at the top of the bust is lovely but what’s up with those folds around her nipple area? Unforgivable!

    • quiltrx

Beautiful gown.  She definitely rode in the Hollywood Popemobile in this one.  Not sure about the odd darting at the bust.

    • Stefanie Mackenzie

It looks like something I made for prom, circa 1968…

    • Alyssa

This is the length I keep my hair, because it’s no fuss and easy! Just let it be!
