Amy Adams in Elie Saab

Posted on February 12, 2013

Since we’ve been hard on her a lot lately, we’ll do Miss Amy a solid and pay her a compliment.

Amy Adams attends The Weinstein Company BAFTA After Party in an Elie Saab dress.

Elie Saab Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Ji Hye Park (OUI)

This isn’t exactly earth-shattering in its originality or anything, but it’s a beautiful color, it looks great on her, and the textural elements provide some interest. We don’t even mind the nude shoes. Seems more like a luncheon dress than an after-party dress, but that ain’t no thing, in the long run. She looks good.

Now, she needs to take everything about this dress that works for her and apply it to her next red carpet gown. Look for color, Amy! Look for textural elements! Keep the form simple! You have your marching orders, girl. Now impress us at the Oscars.

first thought: she must be FREEZING. the woman behind her is all bundled up and amy is in shortsleeves

      • kmk05

…we’re dying, it’s so cold. Those actresses are hardcore: even in my coat I can’t stand outside without shivering. Her ears! Her toes! My teeth chatter just thinking about it.

        • luciaphile

At least she wasn’t wearing strappy sandals and a sequined bathtowel and yeah, it is damn cold. It’s a beautiful dress on her.

    • crash1212

I think she needs updated hair. That cut is limiting her. Either she’s a mermaid or she’s a school marm. Not much else she can do with it. It’s beautiful hair, just needs a style.

      • Alyssa

I agree…a new hair style would really liven up her look!

    • NC_Meg

The color is to die for.  A different hairstyle would have been nice but overall, she looks good.

ETA: Is it just me or does she look like Nicole Kidman (pre-botox) to anyone else?

      • Diego!

I agree!!! She looks amazing, but she also reminds me of Nicole pre botox era! :P

      • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Oops, I just posted a similar sentiment. She should be playing Grace Kelly instead. Her face is more similar in its softness than Kidman’s.

      • FridaStaire

yes, I was just thinking that – and better than Nicole. This is a great dress and look for her. Hope she doesn’t freeze.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OQAEI5VIBLXN6YAONCDMUQVRBI Sydney Rose

      She makes a lovely mother-of-the-bride.

      • StellaZafella

I was thinking: “How genteel she looks, like a tea hostess at the Georgian Hotel in Atlanta, circa 1986″. This is not a bad thing, it’s just not a great thing.

    • Annabelle Archer

She is just so lovely!  That color is just gorgeous on her.
I found myself wondering what shoes I would have selected instead of the nude, though I don’t hate them here.
I landed on a deep purple or a fun silver.  How did I do?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

        Or gold?

      • MoHub

I was thinking a bright red.

    • aahlife

Her hair looks like what used to be popular in the 60′s,a pre curled fake hair bundle that one places on top of head.  You put your hair in a pony tail and plop the fake curls on top.

      • VictoriaDiNardo

My mother had one of those – it got trotted out for parties and dances. She called it her “wiglet”. We thought it was fancy.

        • Imasewsure

My mom called hers a “fall.” Looked like a raccoon tail to me, but I still covetted it

          • MoHub

No. A fall was long hair mounted on a comb that was tucked in behind one’s bangs—if one had short hair—to give the illusion of having long hair. They were mostly replaced by extensions, although I believe Ken Paves still makes falls.

        • aahlife

Yes, that it is, willet, I could not remember it’s name!

        • MoHub

Wiglet is the correct term. I know someone who’s been wearing the same one for the last 30 years.

    • Zippypie

She looks good BUT…with a belt and the hem above the knee and getting rid of the matronly 60s do hair, she would have looked fantastic.  I won’t even ding her on the godawfulbeigeshoes.

She has an instinct of good taste but she just doesn’t go all the way with any of her looks and always falls flat, whether it’s picking out great accessories and then failing on the dress or just not going all the way with a look or insisting on the wrong hair.  I don’t know about her.

      • Annabelle Archer

I wonder then if that means she works without a stylist?  She has taste and class, but needs help with the overall execution.  Though we’ve seen some of the hot messes that pay oodles of money to be styled by professionals, so maybe she is wary of being turned into a joke.

      • j_anson

The sad thing is I agree with everything you say here, but I STILL think this hairstyle is a step up from many of her past up-dos.

        • Zippypie

Yes, the last bun looked like she used one of those Hot Bunz roller things, so it is improved.  It’s just not…right.  It’s very 60s PTA.  Maybe a lower loose bun would do the trick.  She keeps going for these high bunheads.

          • newleaf1

I think her go-to is the bun because she started as a dancer.  Just speculating.

    • Mazenderan

The texture and the colour of the dress are both lovely, and give her a softer look.  I’d still like to see her with her hair down, and a more colourful lipstick.

    • amaranth16

She reminds me of Grace Kelly here.

    • Rand Ortega

Kinda matronly w/ the hair. But the color palette is a marked improvement.

    • j_anson

Also the hair is better than usual. Not that it’s a slam dunk. But it’s better than usual.

    • http://twitter.com/uyeahu Michelle Wilson

That color couldn’t be any more perfect and it fits her beautifully. I wouldn’t mind looking like this on my best days. Gorgeous.

    • kimmeister

It’s unfortunate that the textural elements have erased her bosom.

    • LANDRU3000

I don’t know, she’s been giving off a late sixties Joan Crawford vibe lately.  It’s that hairstyle and neckline, I guess.  Ages her something fierce.   Same thing in that earlier Elle Saab posting of her.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t know… I don’t really like this color and I hate this hairstyle on her… nude shoes don’t inflame me since it’s daytime and the dress is so fancy and sparkly… don’t know why I don’t like it really…..

    • nannypoo

      Beautiful. Hate the hair.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Absolutely gorgeous color against huh colors. That ‘do ages her, well to her age. If you have the ability to look 25 at 37, why try to look your age?

      • Mary229

I sometimes get the feeling that the fact that she looks so young is something that someone told her to play down.  Which I know sounds really weird since this is Hollywood where you are supposed to stay young forever.   People always assume she’s so young and sometimes I wonder if she….doesn’t want to be perceived that way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1677420035 Nicole Seligman

needs a belt/different shoes for sure. something about her hair just makes me angry. it’s so beautiful and she does such weird things with it.

    • MilaXX

Great color on her & I liked her hair like this last time. I’m not crazy about the shoes, but they don’t offend here.

    • alyce1213

      Faint praise indeed.
I think she looks nice, it’s a wonderful color for her, but don’t like the big load on her head.
She’s looked better — for example, the unusual purple print J. Mendel dress a week ago.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      That’s absolutely her color.

    • E. D.

Was a WERQ until I got to the shoes.  Those are hideous.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Love the color on her, but not sure about the dress.  It veers slightly into Mother of the Groom territory to me.  It could just be the hair, which is very aging on her.

      • alyce1213

Mother of the Groom, yes!  It’s the blouson top and sleeve length.  I hate the big bun.

    • Stubenville

Where’d she get her hair done? Some place called “Curl Up and Dye” in East Cupcake, Oklahoma?

      • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

I LOLed so hard. Thanks for that.

    • http://twitter.com/Elizabethann1 Elizabeth Denton

She needs to stop with the big bun. I wish she would chop off her hair to her shoulders.

    • Diego!

Nice Amy!!! I love this color on her :)

    • Mary229

I’d be thrilled if she wore a dress this color to the Oscars.  Also, I love her long hair.  I’d just like to see more layers in it so she can wear it down more.

    • butter nut

LOVE the dress, not crazy about the hair, but this is miles ahead of where she usually ends up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

      That’s a lovely Chico’s dress.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I don’t know why she insists on styling herself so matronly all the time. The dress is fine here, but the tight hair doesn’t help. She would do better to play up how fresh and pretty she actually is. As an aside, I’ve always thought she should’ve been cast as Grace Kelly instead of Nicole Kidman.

    • pookiesmom

She looks great but why does she insist on doing that to her hair?

      • janierainie

Maybe she’s up for the part of Joan Crawford in a movie.

    • guest2visits

      I think this is pretty and tons better than the last black-lace gown.  Her hair style makes the whole thing look retro;
but not in a bad way.

    • Call me Bee

      Sexy secretary.  With ugly shoes.

    • tallgirl1204

beautiful.  So mad men, in a good way.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

How is this not Mother of the Bride? I’m confused.

      • Mary229

I really don’t see what is Mother of the Bride about this or why so many conservative looks often get that label.   It’s a short sleeved beaded dress that isn’t overly tight or short.   I look at this and I don’t see “mother of the bride” (My mother wore a stunning, fitted gown to my wedding btw and looked totally HOT)  but as a classy dress in a beautiful color.  I also imagine the dress was comfortable at the afterparty after being in that other crazy gown all night in the rain.

    • MzzPants

Now, THIS is her style.  Softer, more feminine, than many of her severe choices.  And she OWNS that color.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

I can’t with that hair style. It makes her look SO bobble-head-ed. And nude *pointy* toe pumps are an abomination.

    • oldbobbydraper

      best she’s ever looked.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Lovely dress, now Ms. Amy, listen to TLo, and take what works here and apply it to your next RC appearance.

    • butterflysunita

Love that color on her.  It brings out the color in her eyes.  Pretty dress and like the makeup.  Not sure why she still has her hair like that but overall she looks great.

    • LuluBI

She seriously needs to let her hair down

    • shopgirl716

I just wish she would have some fun with it.  She’s beautiful, thin, rich and amazingly successful.  She has designers throwing clothes at her left and right.  What the hell?  Maybe she’s saving that for when she is a little older and not gunning for Oscars anymore.

    • Anniebet

Too bad women whose hairline “recedes” on the sides of their foreheads aren’t usually aware of how unattractive those pulled back hairstyles are. There’s more real estate on that forehead than Rhode Island.

    • m0r0

This is the perfect color for her. No disrespect intended but EVERYTHING about her reads mousy and a this color really gives her looks life. It takes her from ‘pretty girl’ to “Wow, she’s a pretty girl!”

    • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

I irrationally love her but she always looks tightly wound. She needs alcohol. Actually so do I.

    • Janet B

      Fantastic color and pretty shape.

(Finally, an Elie Saab dress that I like.)

    • decormaven

That is a wonderful color for her, but that hairstyle is not flattering. It’s sorta Princess Grace of Monaco. For once, I’d like this woman to have a solid look – HTT. She’s got the facial beauty, good figure, and access to designer gowns & accessories. Why has it been so tricky?

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

      beeeeeelt!

    • Dhammadina

      Another thought: Ann Margaret.

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

Like the color on her. I do feel sorry for these celebrities, posing out there trying to look good in sleeveless and short-sleeved outfits while it’s SNOWING. Look at the bundled up lady behind her. You know it was colder than shit.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Really! And look at her posing all effortlessly and shit. My nose would be sniffly and I’d be hunched over trying to conserve body heat.

    • Tuneful54

I’m so happy to see some color; this one is great on her and the dress fits her well. But I think her makeup is too washed out, ditto the bare legs and nude shoes.  I’d like to see some more pizazz in her hair.  But overall this is progress.

    • B_C_J

Such a beautiful woman. She always dresses elegantly and always looks refined.  This is a perfect example. She looks exquisite.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1476648069 Scott Cooper

I don’t know.  There’s more than a whiff of late Joan Crawford here.

    • MarissaLG

I think they should have kept the belt on it. Without it, it looks like there is something missing. It’s pretty enough, but nothing special.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Wow, the sock bun trend has reached the red carpet. It’s officially time to burn down Pinterest.

    • doowop1952

      And how about a bra?

    • stubbornthoughts

Love this dress on her, and would love the dress on myself.

And that is not a sock bun, it’s a bird’s nest. Though I don’t mind it here as much.

    • Mightiadd

A luncheon dress?  This is a cocktail dress and even if you’re a lush who downs 3 martinis before noon, save this one for evening.  By the way, she looks great.  Simple shape, great color and fabric.  Don’t understand why some people feel it’s conservative or matronly.  You don’t always have to look like a Vegas hooker to appear youthful…Katy…J Lo…Kim…

    • Qitkat

What a lovely color on her, as well as the color of the model’s dress. Lol, even if it’s the same color in different lighting. These are the blues that are flattering on so many people. It’s not my favorite hairdo, (sock bun, bird’s nest ??? I am behind the times, but my first college roommate wore the same hairdo in 1964!) Amy is so pretty here.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Pretty, flattering color, and this up-do doesn’t look as extreme as some she has worn in the past.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

      Retro in the right way.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Love this dress & she looks great in it-still hate the putty pumps though.  The original belt and a nice bracelet would elevate it more.

      • MarinaCat

I agree. It’s the first time I can recall thinking “fresh and stylish.” Hate the shoes.

    • Laylalola

Maybe Elie Saab is exactly where she should look first, then, for her next red carpet gown.

    • kathrineb

I am pretty satisfied with this. Colour is gorgeous on her! Not digging the hair but otherwise its lovely.

    • peachy

cute dress for lunch. shoes are ok – way better than matchy matchy shoes with that dress, ugh. hate the hair — set it free Amy, set it free!

    • librarygrrl64

Silver-colored shoes would have been great with this.

    • YolandaHawkins

Is that the same hairdo from the BAFTAs?  Not a fan.  Like the dress though.  Color is her friend.

    • doowop1952

      A bra would work.
