After-Oscars WERQ: Solange Knowles in Emilio Pucci

Posted on February 26, 2013

We feel like we’re being far too free and easy with our WERQs today, handing them out willy-nilly and threatening to cheapen this most prestigious of fashion honors.

But we have one thing to say to that:

Solange Knowles attends the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Emilio Pucci yellow sequined dress accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Are you bitches really gonna argue with us on this one?

The defense rests. Fabulously.

      Disco fabulous.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

This! And MY GOD WOMAN, that IS your dress. (Not many can rock egg yoke)

      • tallgirl1204

My thought was “Donna Summer!  hotter than ever!”

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

      gorgeous.

random fact about me: i love yellow.

      • Vickiefantastico

Random fact about me: I absolutely cannot stand yellow, particularly the school bus shade. Which must be why I’m not loving this look at all.

But to each their own, right?

        • Funkykatt

          Yellow…..LOVE YELLOW

        • Sobaika

I would never think bright yellow for a formal event but this works. Solange can do anything, I guess.

        • demidaemon

I don’t particularly respond to yellow either, but I think this is pretty fabulous.

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Same here. It’s my favorite color, PARTICULARLY the vibrant, gorgeous school bus shade lol.

      • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

I love yellow too. I had lemon yellow pants until a week ago, when someone spilled a whole glass of red wine on them. I’m still in mourning.

        • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

possible solution: throw the whole garment in a bucket of cheap red wine and let it soak, then wash it a couple of times. it worked for a light gray shirt once, but didnt for a light grey cardigan.

        • Nappysue

Rub in some Dawn dishwashing detergent and let it sit for a day. It might take more than one try, but Dawn has removed some unbelievable stains for me even after the garment had been washed and dried.

          • twocee

Dawn is truly the miracle detergent.  I’ve used it on stains AND bathed my cat in it after she rolled around in an oil puddle under a car.  Worked on both!

            • urbanamish

try GONZO.  i spilled a full glass of red wine on my friend’s white sofa (dramatic storytelling).  it saved our relationship.

      • http://www.serpentsdance.etsy.com/ SerpentsDance

Me too. I wish I could wear bright, sunny, happy yellow, but my skin tone just does not do well with it. I can wear more mustard yellows and green tinged yellows, though. Lemon, butter, and pastel yellow are all death on me.

      • Cold Fire

its my favorite color! Im even named after a shade of yellow! thanks mom!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Hines/620149309 Erin Hines

Now THAT is a Werq! Gordie, I love her hair. Snaps all around.

    • http://twitter.com/Mlle_D Donyelle

      the color’s stunning on her!

    • butterflysunita

That hair!  That color!  Well-deserved WERQ.

    • kmk05

Perfection. That lip colour is gorge with the outfit.

    • appliquer

Sorry, guys, not a fan of the color. However, the style of the dress is gorgeous – too bad Anne didn’t wear this style in a different color instead of that shiney pink thing.

    • Judy_J

That shade of yellow is divine.  Perfection.

    • Timothy Scott

She looks great, but I’m having flashbacks to those Tucana double face girl singers from Battlestar Galactica ’78. “It’s love, love, love…”

    • Mazenderan

Stunning as always.  She seems to manage both edgy and elegant with no problems.

    • Laurie Bergman

Hair, makeup, carriage = gorgeous! But this dress, alas, is a sequined kindergarten art apron for me.

    • procrastinatrice

Am I the only one seeing the discrepancy between her face and the rest of her body? And I hate the neckline, the boobs that are squeezed out of the sides look like armpit fat, even though they are not.

      • bxbourgie

Yeah the flash sometimes does that with makeup with SPF in it, which is why I can forgive it.  It can look totally fine at home or in the limo or whatever, but as soon as camera flash hits it it’s a wrap.

        • bxbourgie

Not that I’ve ever taken a limo anywhere except for my High school senior prom a million years ago, but you know wht I mean! LOL!  Solange’s limo.  Not mine.  My limo lives under the streets of NYC.

      • http://twitter.com/DebbieFaye78 Debbie Ashpes

Agree – hate the neckline. Didn’t like it even before I noticed her breasts peeking out the sides.

I actually hate this neckline on almost everyone. Stacey Kiebler’s dress would’ve been better without it.

      • ankali

No, you are not. She looks like she’s been into Fan Bing Bing’s makeup case. Otherwise pretty good, though.

    • Susan Collier

      Love it!

    • formerlyAnon

She’s stunning. And I will not naysay her WERQ.

However, I immediately noticed her eyebrows, which makes me think they are subtly the wrong color, maybe?  I mean, why would anyone look at that picture and *notice* eyebrows? (It’s not their shape, I usually like a heavier brow.)

I am also not 100% convinced about the lip color. I’m not good with color so I won’t swear I’m right or suggest something else. But I think I’m looking for something not redder, but darker. Or maybe just glossier.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CatherineKatz Catherine Katz

I couldn’t wait for your comments when I saw this yesterday!  She looks phenomenal!!!

    • Janet B

      Love her style.
She or her stylist is very, very good.

    • kimmeister

What’s going on with the sequins at the top?  Are they sheer but . . . rimmed in yellow?

The jewelry is great but it always irks me a bit to see a bunch of jewelry on one arm/hand and zero on the other.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I’m just gonna bitch a tinsy tiny bit about the eyebrows.  They are mannish.  In combo with the hair (and maybe the yellow of the dress) I’m gettinga muppet vibe.  I wish I wasn’t because I think the dress is fab – I do love the color.  I usually hate a bold lip – but love this one.

      • oohsparkley!

I’m agreeing with you. I thought I saw a touch of Groucho, then I thought maybe I just didn’t like the bangs. I think it’s the color of the brow makeup being off a little or reflecting strangely.

    • warnerave

looks good but not a WERQ!

    • nannypoo

I love the color. Some of her sequins are fritzzled up and need to be smoothed down. I suppose that’s what happens when you are covered in sequins. I’m guessing it’s better in person. Here it kind of looks like oilcloth.

    • jilly_d

Uffda. I’ve agreed with all your Oscar WERQs, boys…..till now. That gown is the color of a high school basketball jersey, and the….mesh…..halter? isn’t helping. Love the hair and makeup but I must respectfully disagree this time. Shit is fug.

    • Sara__B

Yes! Solange does it again! (I wish I could see her shoes…)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=588149191 Rex Griffin Pyle

Gorgeous dress, but the make-up is a little garish, no?

    • Introspective

The makeup may be off a shade or two. The lip might be up for debate. The dress may be a sequined apron with some side boob spillage.

Somehow with all those caveats, Solo is pulling off a look that can only be described as FIERCE. And so Im not mad at her. Werq bitch.

    • Pants_are_a_must

It’s a bit of a boob wrangler, but I can only be envious of a woman who pulls a look like this off so spectacularly.

    • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

How could I argue when you are so clearly right.

    • MilaXX

I was hoping this one would make the cut. She looks great.

    • ashtangajunkie

Solange is Queen of WERQ. She’s a style phenom.

    • Indigo54

      Dag!  I hate yeller!

    • olsonam

I think your WERQs to dresses viewed ratio is probably the same and she definitely gets a WERQ!

    • teensmom99

No need to feel guilty, gentlemen. If Oscar season is WERQ season, I don’t know what is.  A lot of the ladies are bringing it.  It’s now or never!

    • AViewer44

It’s gorgeous but her face also looks like it’s floating a little ahead of the rest of her–same as the Fan Bing Bing problem a page or two ago.   In this case the neckline provides a good distraction but check out the color of her face vs. the color of her shoulders.  Maybe something about the lighting is just really off?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WSJSS4K7IRV6LAGEPBPWFGPT7I Laurie

I noticed the same thing.  Either the lighting or the camera flashes caused everyone’s face to look 2 shades lighter.

    • SewingSiren

Solange has better fashion sense than her sister. Very stylish.

      • Mistie Holler

Amazing to think she’s associated in any way with the House of Derrion, no?

    • NDC_IPCentral

What posture!  I should only stand so straight.  And be genetically gifted with such magnificent shoulders.  Both help to carry off this stunning dress, which looks unforgettable on Ms. Knowles.  WERQ, indeed.

    • prettybigkitty

Except her face is a different color than the rest of her body.  And I’m a little upset with Solange right now.  She cancelled a show in Chicago on Saturday night cited “weather concerns” so she wouldn’t have to be jet lagged at the Oscar parties in LA on Sunday.  Lame.

    • tessasouthworth

Oh dear, this is a first for me, the first time I’ve ever disagreed with a WERQ. Although I wouldn’t go anywhere close to calling her an OUT, there is nothing about this that appeals to me, from the cut and color of the gown, the accessories, the hair or the makeup. I just hope no one jumps down my throat for being a lone voice in the multitude.

Tom and Lorenzo, you are the gift that keeps on giving! Don’t you ever get tired?

    • AnaRoW

I’m going to argue. She looks great from the neck up and I like the color of the dress but hate the dress itself.  It’s doing weird things to her boobs and that mesh looks like skin or something.

    • colleenjanel

Love the hair. Makeup is too light, eyebrows too heavy, lips too matte.

And I can’t help but sing “Trust the Gorton’s Fisherman!”

    • editrixie

She does look fabulous. I can’t stand that shade of yellow (well, of any yellow, really) but it looks great on her.

    • Carly Warnock

Not really loving this. Love Miss Solange though!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Serving up haute big bird yellow realness. She’s stunning.

    • jw_ny

Fab indeed…simple and bold…looks effortless too, but we all know it’s wasn’t.  That lip color with that yellow..smashing!

    • Mistie Holler

They didn’t get an award, but I’d say the folks at Emilio Pucci were winners last night.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I hate yellow for me, but Ms. Knowles is knocking it out of the park.

    • Trisha26

Not working for me…uni-boob, don’t like the lipcolor or eyebrows and for some reason her fro is really bothering me this time.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

      Yeaaaaah, girl!

    • mmc2315

      Garish.

    • Imasewsure

You have been right on point with all of these well deserved WERQs… and this is awesome…bet we won’t see anymore WERQs for a month though…nothing but sweats and UGGs for Hollywood in March…

    • quiltrx

WOW.  No mere mortal could pull off the sequined school bus!

    • lrhoff

Since when did oversized lemons become a WERQ?  The top of the garment is odd, and it’s just not that impressive.  Yes, it’s a bright color, but that’s about it.  Please.  Sleep, boys.

    • Edith’s Head

No one else thinks the bust and the neckline make it manly?  I love the color and the styling but the shoulders/bust area is reading mannish to me.

    • http://twitter.com/commish24 commish24

Love the color, the hair, the accessories–but hate the linebacker shoulders. Wrong neckline for her.

    • Annabelle Archer

Eh. The armpit, boob fit is off. It’s striking, but it’s not Earth shattering. I say wow, but not werq.

    • guest2visits

This is stunningly beautiful – just can’t get over the liquid look of the yellow sequins.

    • Zippypie

It’s striking for sure but frankly, it’s a pretty ugly dress.  Banana yellow sequins with a strange boob seam.  Nah.

Love the hair but she seems to have had the same issue as Fan Bing Bing with the face – white powder – so it makes me think it’s the flash and the lighting on the carpet at that party that’s causing that problem.

    • http://twitter.com/DarrenNesbitt Darren Nesbitt

Don’t be jealous of her boogie.

    • j_anson

I actually… don’t love her hair here. She can work the big hair, no doubt, but something about this iteration is off.

Love the dress to pieces, though. If you can make that yellow work, you pretty much have a responsibility to society to do so.

    • TSkot

      No.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

      Shuts it down!  My god!

    • TieDye64

You WERQ that Donna Summer realness, girl! So digging this.

    • Anniebet

Hmm. Way over the top yellow for me, and so many sequins not lying down as they should are distracting. She herself is flawless, although I would love to see her in smaller hair. I know it’s her signature, but this look is a bit like a muppet is leaning over her head from behind.

    • decormaven

Strong color, and she is deploying it well. “It’s simple, elegant, yet makes a statement. Says to people: confident, a risk-taker, not afraid to be noticed.” WERQ it, indeed!

    • shelley514

      Do the damn thing Solange!!!!

    • DeGuz

Sure, you could pick this apart (side boob, sequins not laying flat, etc.) but it doesn’t change my impression of the overall look, which is UTTER FABULOSITY!

    • B_C_J

The color is very pretty on her. However the design of the dress leaves a lot to be desired….it’s a skirt attached to a bib. Moreover, the bib does not fit well across the bust.  Makeup and hair are lovely.

    • Le_Sigh

      Color color color!  Lovesit!

    • http://twitter.com/BattyMamzelle Cate Young

Can we just say it already? Solange is a WAY better dresser than Beyoncé. bitch looks FIERCE.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

         Absolutely. I agree completely.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      Gorgeous.

    • Alyssa

No argument from me! She looks divalicious!

    • barbarienne

This makes two yellow dresses yesterday that absolutely killed. (Jane Fonda was the other.) Never did I think I would say those words.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I’m not on board-the top of the dress looks like a rash.

    • stubbornthoughts

Hair, lip color, dress color, accessories. HELLO.

    • tereliz

I love love love the dress on her but something about the lippy is not doing it for me. Too orange-y when I think the dress wants a true red. Otherwise she’s pretty much flawless.

    • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

No argument here. Love it on her.

    • bertkeeter

Great color…love the hair….Would like if side armhole was a tad wider and higher!

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I shouted with glee. Working that disco realness, girlfriend!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I’m not in love with No. 2 Pencil yellow, but I like her style in general.

    • libraangel

Yes, fab all the way. Solange has been nailing it lately which is kinda weird – advice from big sister?

    • PeaceBang

The look on her face is a WERQ in and of itself. She is becoming one of my celebrity crushes. I don’t a thing about her but I love her style.

    • E. D.

      WERQ.

    • PhillipWilde

I don’t like the neckline.  There, I said it.
