After-Oscars IN or OUT: Anne Hathaway in Saint Laurent

Posted on February 26, 2013

Did she wake up this week, after months of campaigning in jaw-dropping outfits, and say to herself, “For the final lap, I’m choosing only awkward dresses!”

Because this?

Anne Hathaway attends the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in a custom Saint Laurent gown with a metallic sequin triangular neckline paired with Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

We don’t love it. Not even a little bit. Oh sure; the color’s nice on her and we’ll never turn our noses up at some sequinry to bump up the glam, but it feels a little home-sewn to us. And it’s the second dress in a row that did weird things to her boobs. We just don’t see how any gal could make a neckline like that work.

But hey, maybe we’re still tired after yesterday and can’t see straight. You tell us: are we being too hard on her? We just think it’s kinda dull.

Vote Now!

IN! A cool, glittery, tall drink of water!

OUT! Drab and boob-flattening!

In other news, Jennifer Lawrence’s big, poofy, face-plantin’ dress was voted IN while Adele’s rather safe choice was also voted IN, but just barely.

OUT. And as a home sewer, I’ll take offense to that!

    • Vlasta Bubinka

I’m a home sewista as well. This looks like a home project thrown together in 1973 by Liza Minelli. She took a sheet and cut up a cocoon jacket, et voila! Anne here found it in a vintage shop near the Village and decided it had just the right vibe for partying post-win.

      • Maybe she wnts to play Liza in an upcoming movie? She has the hair and the eyelashes.  lol

        • Vlasta Bubinka

Maybe she’s lobbying to play Liza in a musical based on Halston’s life.

    • Preach it!  If anything I sewed turned out looking like this, I’d ash-can it.  A decided out.

Now I’m even more curious about the Valentino she ditched at the last minute.

      • michkabibbles

they have a picture of it at enews (just google enews- anne hathaway’s valentino dress). i read she thought it was too similar to amanda seyfried’s mcqueen. they are a bit similar, but the valentino is gorgeous, much better than the mcqueen or either dress hathaway appeared in sunday night.

        • sweetestsith

OMG! It is similar, but SO BEAUTIFUL. I do not understand switching. Clearly she should have made AS switch dresses. 😛

          Edited because I can’t spell. ^^

        • Wow – head & shoulders above the one that she chose, but seeing the two side by side, I can see why she did.

          • Lori

I can see why she switched, although I don’t think she needed to. The thing I still can’t understand is why she switched to that Prada. In fact, I can’t understand why that was even an option, and I don’t see why this blue bag was either. Not good.

        • Glammie

Boy, she really overthought it–Seyfried wasn’t up for anything–Anne’s Valentino would have gotten the coverage anyway.  Boy,  AnnE must be quite insecure if that made her switch at the last minute.

Oh, the after-Oscars dress–looks like one of the make-a-dress-in-four-hours PR stunts.  Even though she’s wearing a tube, it doesn’t fit right.  That takes some doing.

      • StellaZafella

And someone put HALSTON’s name on this…glittered dinner napkin.

    • MissMariRose

OUT. As someone who is just learning to sew, I recognize a dress even I could make when I see it.

  • Jecca2244

I am still running with my cliche idea that she is pregnant.

    • LearnedFoot

I hate to make the assumption (If she’s pregnant and wants everyone to know, she’ll tell us! Until then, it’s nobody else’s business!) But this gown is definitely… embiggening her midsection. At the very least, it’s really unflattering. And it looks so cheap.

      • greyhoundgirl

I also wondered about that–not because of the midsection embiggening (great word!) but because of the boob issue.  As if her body just isn’t doing what it usually does so it’s harder to dress.  However–there are many reasons this could be true, including that she simply has decided to enjoy food and the embiggening that comes along with it.

        • I hadn’t thought about that, but now that i reflect, the pink dress made her look thick-waisted…maybe she is preggers…

          • Monday1900

I can’t imagine that if she was she wouldn’t have worked that into her Oscar speech–but we’ll see.

        • carolclark12

I don’t know if this was exaggeration or not, but I heard on some show yesterday (I was out sick and watching any and all Oscar recap shows) that she said she was going to “pig out” when Les Mis was over.  Her choice for pigging out – baked potato with tomatoes.

      • kmk05

‘Embiggen’ reminds me of Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy blog! He has
the most amazing pics and often links to the actual full-resolution
ones. You have definitely deployed it judiciously here: this is so floaty (in a ‘too big, wrong size’ way!). Also creased. Yikes.

      • elemspbee

        embiggening–I love it.

      • Claudia Gilbert

Liked for great use of quality and perfectly cromulant Simpsons word.

    • christinewithanx

Right? I kind of think so too, even if she’s not. But these dresses suggest bloating.

    • seehowpretty

My thought too. Something is up…

    • My retired boss, who comes into my work to volunteer sometimes, asked me yesterday if Ryan Gosling and Anne Hathaway were having a baby together. I was all nooo, she’s with a different guy, but I can see how you’d make that mistake, since he bears a Gosling resemblance. Now I see what he meant about babies…

  • 3boysful

I think she just finally wanted to be able to eat.

    • Little_Olive

A regular empire waist could have taken care of that while giving her some shape.

    • xmixiex

even if she began re-feeding, she’s STILL thinner than 99.9% of the general public… and could find a dress to fit.

  • afabulous50

IN – And I like that big gold accessory she’s carrying…hehehe

  • THANK YOU!! I can’t take this. It’s like she’s wearing a glamorous nightgown. The color is beautiful, but it’s just not working. At all.

  • OUT – but great for a girl who is going to eat ALL the canapes.

  • luciaphile

Out. Did she have a bitter falling out with her stylist? Although the hair looks great.

    • Vickiefantastico

Isn’t her stylist Rachel Zoe? If so, what on earth happened Oscar night? Major fail for both dresses, IMHO.

      • Lisa_Cop

Didn’t Rachel used to send Brad Goreski to Anne. Maybe she should switch to him as her stylist.

  • Looks cheap. Sorry bout it.

  • I’m going with an out here. It comes down to the textile in use. If it had been that shade, but something with a softer hand, it would have subtly molded around the body. This turns her into a steel gray tube.

    • Introspective

my thoughts exactly! I feel like if you want to dress down after the awards, maybe a silk jersey with a bit of subtle shine would have given her a much more interesting silhouette. she definitely would not be getting the sack effect happening here.

oh well. something seems unsurprising about annie’s trip ups at the final lap of the poledance. bitch just got tired of trying.

ETA: OUT. (as if there were any questions about my vote, but…)

    • janierainie

Yes the fabric looks cheap.  She should have gone to H&M.

    • Glammie

      Halston, Halston where are you?

  • Michael_Jones

OUT. This says “They’ve already given me the damn thing. Now I don’t have to dress for it anymore…”

  • I love the color, but the design just feels like it’s been done — and done better — at various times over the past 50 years. Meh. And out.

    • Little_Olive

It is absolutely a bad reedition of a really old idea. I don’t know what the hell is up with Rachel Zoe, if she still is her stylist.

  • muelonil

Third dress that does weird things to her boobs if you count her Oscar Les Mis performance dress.

  • Funkykatt

Nope, it looks cheap and tacky. I could make this and I can’t even sew.

  • Out. Nope.

  • shirab

Why is she so mad at her boobs? I feel like she and Heidi need to have a little talk and agree to meet somewhere in the middle re: boob deployment in gowns.

  • Jangle57

Ye gods, this looks like something that would get auf’d on PR with the comment that it looks cheap and tacky and poorly made.  OUT

  • Can we talk about what she wore during the Les Mis performance during the Oscars? That was amazing — why didn’t she wear that all night?!

    • I would strongly disagree with that – I remember my first impression being “Wow, Ann Hathaway is melting.” But to each their own.

      • Snailstsichr

She may have been melting but I liked it better than either of her other choices.

OUT!  It looks “home sewn” by a non sewer.  All the “Home sewers” I know would have done way better than this…. good color though.

    • Well, I’m one of those non-sewers that still attempts to occasionally – but I don’t go out in public in any of my “creations”. I understand wanting to be comfortable at the end of the evening, but still…..OUT.

  • Maybe she is pregnant?

  • Laurie Bergman

“Home-sewn” is right. That’s a dress I could have made in home ec class in 1978. In fact, it’s quite possible I did.

  • BayTampaBay

    She looks like shit!

If ONE has access to ALL the FREE DESIGNER clothes in the world (and Annie does), why on Earth would one wear this POS?

Rachel Zoe really missed the boat on this one.

    • afabulous50

TLo – I got flagged yesterday…and then this is OK?

      • You got deleted for attacking another commenter for having an opinion you didn’t agree with.

You’re not the comments police. Don’t go around pointing out things you think should be deleted on a site you don’t run.

        • carolclark12

I don’t want to sound like a suck-up, but that’s what I love about your site.  No personal attacks, just witty retorts and respectful disagreement.  When I sometimes venture over to other fashion sites, I’m truly offended at the virulent attacks on anyone who dares to like Anne Hathaway’s dress (for example).

I’ve told so many people (in real life) about your site, and how funny and informed everyone is here.  Thank you for keeping it classy.

  • RzYoung

That’s a shitty dress. Seriously though, do the winners have to cart those things round for the rest of the night?

    • geans

I’d want to cart it around…provided I had a designated statue handler for me-drinking purposes.

    • I’m surprised they don’t cart them everywhere they go, forever. 🙂

  • Le_Sigh

OUT. Oh Annie honey – you’re not Michelle Williams, and even she could barely pull this off.

  • I dunno…I like this over the Prada, so for me it’s an IN.

  • ojosazules

  • I like idea of the neckline, but on an entirely different dress. It looks very…Project Runway mushy-middle. Not QUITE enough to get auf’d, but not in the top 3 either. I mean, if you’re gonna go custom YSL…THIS is what you choose? Don’t get it. Who sewed that? Nothing fits. I just expect better from them.

  • geans

  • In, just because it’s better than the other!

  • geans

I really like it. There, I said it.

    • tallgirl1204

i like the grecian goddess idea of it.  but not the execution, exactly.

  • conniemd

Out. Looks homemade. And don’t take offense. I home sewed my own bridal gown – for economic reasons. She has no excuse.

  • Little_Olive

Oh no! I was so expecting the after party dress to see her make up for that Prada apron (another comenter’s word)!!

Annie, really? They sell those at my local chinatown. Not kidding.

  • “a custom Saint Laurent gown” This was custom-made for her? She must have pissed someone off. That, or she just said, “Fuck it, after all this work, I just want to lounge in the closest thing to pajamas I can wear while still looking appropriate.”

Actually, yeah, I’m going with the latter. Pajama dress. I’m gonna be contrary and say IN even though she’s wearing glam Star Trek pajamas.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

OUT. She needs to stop trying to be Audrey Hepburn. It’ll never work. If that is her next movie role or something I’ll throw things at the TV.

  • Out, she should be kinder to her boobs.

  • My first reaction was that it’s better than the other dress. But that’s like saying “Flu is better than Bird Flu”. This is so bad. OUT.

  • Judi Townsend

love the color, hate the shape. She must have known that she was going to win the Oscar because the gold around the neck looks like “oscar gold”

    • twocee

But now she’s committing the sin of matching accessories 🙂

  • Out. Expensive sack.

  • Out, but just barely. I have to grade on a curve; she’s done so much fantastic stuff on red carpets that this is really a comparative sad trombone. For someone else it could easily be a step up.

  • Martha Anderson

    that sequin dewlap is odd
Is it supposed to flounce forward?  If not, it is stiff and ill fitted,

if so it does not flounce enough.  If it were softer and fell in a few pleats, I could call it what to wear when you don’t want to wear jewels.
but here is looks like inexpensive stretch sequin fabric, poorly done.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

OUT.  Sequined shower curtain in blah shade of blue.

  • MoHub

I do believe it’s a sequined nightie, and she was able to roll right into bed when she got home.

    Oh—and OUT.

  • lbl

She stopped with the attention grabbing dresses after the flashing incident, no? I wonder if that’s a coincidence.

  • ersmom

I like it better than the fembot dress she wore to accept the Oscar in…

  • SapphoPoet

    OUT. Home-Ec class project.

    • Anathema_Device

Yes, it looks like a Project Runway last-minute save, where the designer spent way too much time and focus on the neck piece and didn’t have time to finish the dress.

  • ashtangajunkie

OUT. I was going to call this an in, but I think that’s because I was only looking at her pretty face. Once I look at the dress, it’s so very out.

  • Out.  Looks like she made it herself.

  • MaryMitch

I would love to see a picture of her in the gown she wore in the Le Mis number. In the few seconds I saw it, I thought it was beautiful, and I was thrilled that she had changed into a prettier dress. Unfortunately she changed back to the other (which luckily someone had pressed in the meantime).

  • Dot

Not really my favorite gown ever, but she’s probably one of the few who could pull this off. It looks really striking in motion, as she walks, though.

  • Lisa Salmon

    Looks chip!

  • lehen

those sequins look like my 5th grade dance costume.

  • Lisa Salmon

    Looks very chip!

  • Sadly, it’s another out for me.  This is a CUSTOM made dress specifically for her and this was the best that YSL could come up with??  She has worn way better red carpet gowns.  But that shiny gold accessary she’s carrying more than makes up for this dishwater gray mess.

  • tallgirl1204

Maybe she said “the heck with it, I want to EAT!”  And put on a bag dress.  Second choice, “I want everyone to start guessing ‘baby bump!'”  Anything to stay in the tabs.

    • DinaSews

Ugh.  I was hoping for a moratorium on her for awhile.

  • bxbourgie

Out.  It’s a sewn up satin sheet with some jewels glued to the top.  Why would she do this?  She’s so much younger than this dress makes her look.  She really must have run out of dresses after all that campaigning to win the award.

  • OUT… It is ugly and no better than the nipple dress

  • n a

God, that is a beautiful color on her though… I can see how she fell for it.  Plus, the zero waistline had to be a selling point… I hope she stopped at Old Country Buffet on the way home.

    • carolclark12

Old Country Buffet!!!  Are you in the south?  (I’m in Georgia, and those things are everywhere.)

      • n a

hhaha- no, but I used to live in southern Ohio. They were pretty popular there. 🙂

  • CPK1

looks like someone took a glue gun to some curtains. OUT.

  • EveEve

The dress she wore in the Les Mis musical number was stunning – too bad she didn’t just keep that on all night.

  • Janet B

I like everything but the dress. Does she hate her breasts?

  • She looks pregnant!

  • DinahR

I do believe this dress was chosen to show off her best accessory.  That Oscar.   The gold embellishment at the neck coordinates with her new little date.  The pale blue background really makes Oscar stand out.  And because she’s already one she can wear a comfy dress and eat something at these parties.  That’s my take anyway — but I agree it’s not a pretty look.   So OUT.

I bet there is a killer dress somewhere she had set aside in case she didn’t win.

  • Vaniljekjeks

    Out.  Sequined nightie.

  • alyce1213

Awkward is the word.  Is this really St Laurent?  It’s just hard to believe.

  • tylka5

It’s not that is is hideous, it is not.  It is just that it looks like you’ve seen it at Forever 21 in every length and every fabric.

    • MilaXX

      or H & M next to Helen Hunt’s dress.

      • Snailstsichr

Helen Hunt’s dress looked so much better than this though. I wish Anne had worn an H & M instead of this.

        • MilaXX

not really Helen’s fabric looked cheap and was nothing but wrinkled. The only thing it had going for it was the color.

  • Frank_821

Out for sure. it fits horribly. why couldn’t she just wear what she had during the Les Miz number. that was lovely

  • Vera L-

Looks very comfortable. I wonder if she and young James Cameron there are expecting?

  • JauntyJohn

In. It’s not fussy and it’s occasion-appropriate at this point in their night.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. With this dress and the awards-ceremony dress, it looks like she was trying to take the focus off the dress and put it on her face. Or she was being super aware of wanting to look “timeless” for her big moment or whatever. She blew it both cases, though, in my opinion.

  • marilyn

    Out.  Another bad choice.

  • gabbilevy

OUT. What a disappointing finish to what had been a pretty damn good awards season.

  • Roosevelt 85

I keep saying it but Rachel Zoe REALLY dropped the ball on Lawrence and Hathaway this year (including Jen Garner). Mayhaps Brad Goreski was the brilliant guy there?

  • OU . I mean, what did really happen with her choice in dresses? Did she fire Rachel Zoe recently? No really, did she?

  • rumcg66

OUT. Even more OUT than her dress for the awards.

  • Alyssa

Out. I would love to have that as a nightgown though…looks comfy!

  • Kristy Evans

GROSS. It also looks home-made. I don’t understand how she could have two designer dresses look like something a Project Runway contestant threw together in an hour. OUT.

  • Susan Collier

Oy. It would be fine if it fit, but the collar is folded funny and the bust is weird.

  • shopgirl716

No. It’s ugly.  I think she’s tired of holding her stomach in after all these red carpet events and she’s ready to chow down.  This dress is really more like a mumu.

    • megohd

Is she trying to start a baby bump rumor?

  • Unkempt

So the neckline isn’t a built in cup holder?

  • BrooklynBomber

Between this dress (which I sort of like) and the other dress, I keep thinking of “A Weekend in the Country”:

    “A weekend in the country
    Is delightful
    If it’s planned.
Wear your hair down, and a flower,
Don’t use makeup, dress in white.
She’ll grow older by the hour
And be hopelessly shattered by Saturday night.”

See, I’m thinking that these “simple” frocks are a very deliberate choice. A lowering of the eyelashes. A demureness antidote to the “that statuette is MINE, suckers!” positioning. No big gowns, no yards of ruffles, no neck-to-toe sequins. Instead, relatively modest, quiet, understated loveliness — just like the person wearing them.

    My ass.

    • MilaXX

I agree the faux demure is calculated, but it ain’t working and just makes her look stupid. I hated Sandra Bullock’s Oscar winning movie, but I loved her in that gold gown. You want the award? Go for it and look the part.

      • BrooklynBomber

I don’t dislike either of her dresses as much as most people; or, rather, I don’t dislike the ideas behind them. I don’t think either worked as well as it should have, but I like the concepts. Very ’60s, to go with her hair. Twiggy to Adele’s Jean Shrimpton.

    • BrooklynBomber

  • golden_valley

Did Rachel Zoe run out of designer dresses for Ann to wear?

  • Mistie Holler

The neck bit is awkward, like it’s meant to lie flat but it won’t.

  • This would have been great if it had been tailored better, but since it looks home sewn, I vote it OUT.

  • capybara_cafe

OUT. It’s just a tube with some tacky sequin trim. Any 7th grade home ec student could have made this dress, but they’d probably have better taste.

  • Lilithcat

Although it is marginally better than the other one.

  • I like it, I’m gonna say In.  I bet she wanted to be able to eat and be comfortable after all that nonsense was over.

    • BrooklynBomber

That’s funny, because I was thinking she probably hasn’t eaten in several months and is looking forward to a bit of gorging.

  • Carrieanno

  • Judy_J

    Bad Cleopatra costume. OUT.

  • Meh. Out.

  • prettybigkitty

out.  Her stylist must be over her, too.  After months of putting up with her grating, cloying smugness decided to exact revenge on the biggest night of her career.  Ugly, unflattering dresses.

  • it looks kinda 90s LOVE! IN IN IN IN!!

  • MilaXX

    OUT! Hideous and cheap looking.

  • Annabelle Archer

    Out.  It looks so…so cheap.

  • SewingSiren

I like it  better than the one she wore to the Oscars. But it looks hastily put together as did the other one. The gown she wore for the performance with the cast of Les Miz was the best of the bunch.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  But I still like it better than the one she wore to the Awards.

  • There is nothing IN about it. A total OUT

  • mjude

  • LindsayGoon

Meh… but it is sweet that she’s wearing friendship bracelets under the cuff!

  • kmk05

This is awful. What is it with her and satin? I mean, okay, you were hurt that people said you were trying too hard. So… the answer is to not try at all WHEN YOU ACTUALLY GET THERE? Like, what. There are some bitches who would cut you for that statue, and that’s what you wear.

OTOH, maybe it makes the victory all the sweeter for her 😀

  • Gabrielle Bettencourt

OUT. If it was tailored to her shape, it would have been beautiful.

  • OUT!  It’s like a crafts project MuMu!!!

  • l_c_ann

Although I love the color of the fabric and I’d bet if feels great.

  • decormaven

This is couture? I had to look twice- I thought maybe she was wearing a Project Runway design.

  • Out, unflattering all over. In the shots where she’s holding the Oscar up high, it just blends into the sequins…I would have wanted to make sure it stood out!

  • filmcricket

Hmm. I like it better than what she wore to the ceremony, that’s for sure. Colour’s good, hair and face look great. I think I’m giving this a lower-case in. I must be feeling generous today.

  • xmixiex

i’m officially SICK TO DEATH of her and her goofy floppy hair.  thank god this shit’s DONE.

  • carolclark12

I’m trying to keep my dislike for her out of this, but her boobs look so distorted.  And that sequin neckline reminds me of my daughter’s Cleopatra outfit I made for her 20 years ago.

Is Rachel Zoe still dressing her?

  • Beardslee

In.  Lovely color, interesting detailing.  Maybe she wanted to wear something that would allow her to eat something for the first time in months.

  • Joey Melliza

she’s defaulting to ugly!!! what a waste!

  • leave_Blake_alone

  • OUT I would have expected to see this – and would have liked it better – on Honey Mahogany on RPDR.  This is “caftan-adjacent.”

  • jmorino08

anyone made the baby bump prediction regarding the last minute switch
to the Prada? If her original choice was at all body con and she’s
pregnant, that would explain a lot. This second dress practically
    screams “unannounced pregnancy, no?

    • Coco Cornejo

      That’s very kind of you.

  • Cathy S

When she has her arm up around her hubby (?) it’s fine around the boobs, but when she’s just standing with her arms down it’s terrible. Out.

  • Ew. Out.

  • mhleta

    OUT. Another bad boob dress.

  • f_yeah_marie

  • OrigamiRose

The backstory I heard on the Oscar show dress was that Annie got wind that no less than co-star Amanda Seyfried’s dress was a little too similar to the Valentino that Hathaway had long planned to wear – hence the last-minute decision to switch into the nipple express.

    • carolclark12

I heard that, too.  Somebody showed the Valentino last night, and it did look very similar to Amanda’s dress, except it had a high neckline.  It would have looked lovely on her.

What I can’t figure out is this – Amanda said she had been working with (I forgot who made her dress) for “months” on her design, so wouldn’t Rachel Zoe and/or Anne know this?  Or am I attributing normal characteristics (“What are you wearing?”) to neurotic show business folks?

      • OrigamiRose

I would definitely expect my stylist to know that, especially about what one of my female co-stars had planned.  In fact, of all the little details I would think would be a requirement for being a good stylist to an A-list star would be just that – you get the dish on my competition (awards or otherwise) however necessary.

Perhaps Rachel is spread too thin?  (Uh, no pun!)  I note that a new season of her show starts this or next week – maybe it’s time to dial back the personal branding and start to focus on the client again?

      • formerlyAnon

Yeah. Maybe not among everyone, but you would imagine that they’d anticipate plenty of “castmate” photos and want to coordinate a bit.

      • Lisa_Cop

        Seyfried ‘s was McQueen.

  • Judy_S

OUT. Not drab and boob-flattening, but the collar simply does not fit. If the dress does not fit you, do not wear it. If the dress cannot be altered to fit the star, do not lend it to her, Oscar or not. Definitely not gonna buy any more St. Laurent dresses, no sirree, though Alice might ask if I could buy any more if I haven’t bought any yet.

  • mozzer0906

OUT.  I hate the fit on the neckline too, it is pooching out too much.  Plus it does nothing for her figure.  Girl WTF happened to you?  Rachael Zoe failed her.

  • E. D.

OUT, but I still like it better than the Oscar outfit.  Need some color, please!

  • sweetlilvoice

Out, although her makeup and hair look great. And she is glowing.

  • I’m voting IN.  I think she looks lovely- muuuuuch better than the dress she wore to the actual awards ceremony.

  • Indigo54

OUT, OUT, OUT.   OMG, the very first dress I ever made came out better than that.   Horrible!

  • reddhouston

Out….it looks cheap…I feel like I can make this later..and I still wouldn’t wear it.

  • I’d be willing to give her an in just because she has no visible nipples.

    • alyce1213

      It’s the anti-Prada.  How strange.

  • mommyca

You just go an Oscar for God’s sake: can you pick a dress in a fabric that will NOT wrinkle while you are riding your limo? Oy!

  • O U  T.

Meanwhile, her hubby looks like a very skinny downgrade of Ryan Gosling.

  • It makes me think of something Michael Costello would have done on PR after he’d designed 3 other dresses and couldn’t make them work.

I know this isn’t true of Miss Annie, but I looked at that dress and thought it’s the thing to wear when you’ve been starving your ass off for months to fit into the red carpet gowns, and now you’re going to sit down with your Oscar and eat an entire damn cheesecake.

  • elleg929

OUT – it looks a one-day challenge Project Runway reject.

  • zelavie

Completely OUT.  WTF, Anne?!  This was your glory night, and you shit it away.

  • jenno1013

WAY too many sequins.  Bad sci-fi alien-queen dress.  OUT.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  I appreciate that she can eat a few well deserved sandwiches and be comfortable after her long haul of awards ceremonies, but this is just unflattering and downright awkward in spots.

  • shanteUstay

The color makes me queasy and she’s tall and lean, she looks like a sign post in that thing

  • MissFern

    out.  diy-project runway

  • Renee Mailhiot

OUT. It reminds me of dresses I used to wear in college with sequin elastic bands at the top… shudder.

  • Alyssa Schiffman

I feel like she’s choosing the dresses to try and “match” the hair, instead of choosing the best dress.

  • Corsetmaker

I feel like she’s put all her dresses in the wrong order :/

  • stubbornthoughts

If this were better fitted and she wasn’t free ballin’ in her chesticle region, I would absolutely love this on her.

  • leftcoastpickle

OUT   This is like bad project runway!

  • tereliz

OUT. Just wrong on so many levels. I really thought she was going to pull out all the stops tonight, but I was doubly disappointed.

  • imustacheyouaquestion

    OUT. awkward.

  • twocee

In the first picture, I’d call it a qualified IN.  But then you get to the detailed pics and it just looks bad.  Maybe when she tried it on she was only looking in a full-length mirror and didn’t notice the weirdness going on with the sequins?  Or maybe it’s a dress you just cannot move in AT ALL.  Whatever the case, it ends up being an OUT.

  • Anne, honey?  Audrey Hepburn is dead.  You are not Audrey Hepburn.  Repeat this in the mirror ten times every morning, until you remember that you are your own very attractive and talented person.

That said, your hair looks fab.

  • YolandaHawkins

OUT!  Looks like a mediocre home economics assignment.

  • Stubenville

Hmmmm. baby blue velour? Ultrasuede? Was it made from a Snuggie?

  • Zippypie

OUT.  Bedsheet with Joann Fabrics sequins off the bolt.  She really must have pissed off Rachel Zoe big time.

    Definite out

  • I think it’s really pretty, though slightly awkward. A hesitant “in.” It looks like a call back to the early sixties to me, for some reason I can picture Audrey Hepburn in something like this…

  • GorgeousThings

It’s the home-ec student’s version of the Chanel that SJP wore to the Oscars several years back.

Anne, honey, go away now. You’re tiring.

    • Kyle Crawford

I thought the exact same thing!
the next day, on the Today show : Red Carpet looks for less!

  • Kyle Crawford

We are all agreeing , my first thought was : ” Wow, won the Oscar and found the time to make her own dress “…

  • My 8 year old daughter made a dress like that for her first ever sewing project. It was a dress for the dog.

So that? Would be an OUT.

  • CatherineRhodes

I don’t understand what is going on with the sequined neckline. Is it bunching up in the middle or a different pattern and color that’s giving the illusion of bunching up? I guess OUT. If you can’t look fabulous at an Academy Awards after party there is no hope for you.

  • Sara__B

OUT. It looks like one of the better beginner’s home ec sewing projects from 1968. (Mine project turned out much worse.)

  • Jessica Goldstein

To me it screams sixties home sewn maternity.

  • surfergirl70

You know what?  The neckline is interesting, I like the color and sequins, and it’s a dress that looks elegant but also comfortable enough to go and hang out and eat and drink for hours.  Not perfect, but she’s earned the right to celebrate in comfort.  IN

  • Preggers?

  • carpediva

    All the way OUT.

  • andreawey

Hey, it looks like a glamorous night gown, who wouldn’t want to be comfy at the after parties…….

  • kim flodin

Out. Looks like loving hands at home.

  • Sue_Asponte

It’s almost like she’s just letting Jennifer Lawrence have the night, bless her heart.

  • Snailstsichr

OUT. It doesn’t flatter any part of her.  This is just jaw-dropping awful. Even though I was getting a bit tired of her, I was looking forward to her Oscar gown choices. What a huge let down. As irritating as she was, she deserves way better than this. So sad.

  • The sequins look terrible, like they were glued on by a five year old.

  • Out

  • kimmeister

OUT.  A dress that likely costs several mortgage payments shouldn’t look this cheap.

  • elemspbee

OUT. Didn’t she wear this already? And maybe this is further fodder for the whole bun in the oven rumors?

  • Out, but I do get the ease of this dress for the afterparty and maybe would have given it an “in” if her Oscar dress wasn’t so flat, (except for the nips) colorless, and drab.

  • Lisa Dugan

I’m going in the minority here and saying In. Is it the best? No.  But it certainly makes a nice backdrop for the Oscar.

  • moja31

pretty bad, yet somehow still better than what she wore to the actual ceremony.

  • almondemy

Worst of all? That mess looks CHEAP. O to the U to the big ol’ T.

  • fringebenefit

Out, for all the reasons you so eloquently state, TLo.

  • Out. Drab body bag realness.

  • deathandthestrawberry

Damning with faint praise… I like this helleva lot better than her Oscar dress. Tepid IN.

  • OUT. Those sequins should sit flat.

  • Out…and seriously, the girl needs to buy a bra and start wearing it.

  • Mary229

Am I allowed to say that I miss Anne Hathaway’s old body?   The one she had before she played Catwoman and and then went on to play Fantine?   Because…I miss that Anne Hathaway.  She was a great Catwoman.  But she lost all that weight for the role and then never gained it back.  And I miss the old Annie.

    • formerlyAnon

I’d be shocked if she doesn’t put on a few pounds. In a controlled way. She probably wanted to be in prime dress hangar form for the run up to the Oscars.

  • Out…not flattering to any part of her!  Unfortunate when she has such a smokin body!  With the boyish hair, you would think you would want to show off your curves to balance it out and look more womanly. But, snaps on the oscar win I guess that is what matters most!!

  • MzzPants

IN.  Not uber-fabulous, but I still like it.

  • CeeQ

Oh good grief. Maybe she’s working thru some unresolved issues with her tits or something. On Sunday she was all MY NIPPLES ARE HERE!! And now it’s NIPPLES? WHAT NIPPLES?

(Also: unclench on the Oscar dear, you’ve already won it, no one is going to show up and take it from you….)

  • warnerave

she’s clearly going for the “understated” elegance route..

  • Imasewsure

Dressing like a column doesn’t work for her. OUT but not awful… just dull and somewhat unattractive

  • It’s sort of sad that I’m calling this an OUT, with the notation that it’s still better than that horror she wore to the ceremony.  I heard that Twitter comments about the pink dress were being posted under #Les Nipperables.

  • Jessi03

Wtf, Annie.  I wore a version of this for a high school Dreamgirls review.  Do better.

  • unbornfawn

    Looks cheap and tacky.

  • appliquer

Out. Who is styling her now? They should be fired after these disappointments.

  • Tuneful54

Looks like something a mom sewed for her kid for the Christmas Pageant (picturing a turtleneck underneath it) or from the lingerie clearance rack at Ross.
She annoys me and seems very high-maintenance (e.g., the incredibly long list on her “team” she thanked in her speech–talk about a First World moment–although at least she tacked on something about “the Fantines” as the music was about to start up again). She may be a nice person, but she annoys a lot of people.

  • DominoEstella

    I actually love this dress.

  • It’s pretty, and I would really like it if the collar didn’t fit funny and it didn’t do weird things to her boobs (again). It’s IN, but just barely.

  • OUT. I thought “home-sewed” too, when I saw the bunching at the neck, and it really isn’t very flattering at all.

  • Out.   Kind of pains me a bit to say it though.  I really do love AH, but this is just too shapeless.

  • Diego!

Out, this dress gives her asian tits.

  • MintaHallWriter

Well…it’s better than the Oscars look.  It’s a modest, bare-bones IN. Sort of. But it’s far from wonderful.

  • trisker

    Bad-fitting sack with glitter.  out.

  • i like it more than the NIPPLES dress, i like it for an after party (looser, more relaxed-seeming), but i agree with the “home-sewn” look.  i feel as though it should have been a bit more flowy.  and homegirl should have put on a braaaaaaaa…..  out

  • Trisha26

  • EEKstl

OUT.  Better than the earlier “meh” but too tent-like.

  • OUT OUT OUT!!!!

  • kathryn_dc

It doesn’t even look expensive! I didn’t even like her dress she wore for the song from Les Miz. I think fashion fatigue must have set in!!

  • Heather Smith

It looks like a wind sock with a sequined yoke.  OUT.

  • Out. Out. Out. Out.  Very Liza…I concur

  • Jennifer Coleman

She seems to do best when she is not trying dress referentially – in this case to the 60s or 70s and in her Oscar dress to a version of Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Oscar gown. She has a unique look that can stand on its own, not as a pretty princess or Audrey Hepburn or anyone else because she tends to look insincere.

    • Dot

I’m sure she didn’t pick her Oscar gown because she thought it looked like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar gown; she chose it hours before the event. Comparisons to Audrey Hepburn are par for the course, given the gamine look that her short hair evokes and her coloring. (Not to mention Liza.) I don’t get the feeling that she’s trying to dress like Audrey Hepburn. I do, however, think a lot of people like to project on this chick no matter what she does, for some reason.

      • Jennifer Coleman

You’re missing my point. Anne’s most stunning looks are when she goes out on a bold limb and not trying to conform to Hollywood’s standards of what the top actresses should look like. That dress is an Audrey iconic dress – and she was trying to evoke that classic look (frankly, Audrey Hepburn’s style is much more that we collectively give her). Whether she has a similar haircut or not, it doesn’t really matter. And I do think Rachel Zoe did have Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink gown in mind because it was the same type of moment for Anne-a talented young star that was about to have her crowning moment at the Oscars. I don’t mind the reference as a concept, it’s just that Anne is at her best when she defines her own style.

  • Patricia Biswanger

  • Qitkat

Well, I don’t hate it. She’s slim and young and perky enough to forgo the bra, and the nipples aren’t showing. It’s a pretty color, the slit’s not too high, and the glitter matches her statue. She’s very very happy, and pretty. I’ll go with In.

  • Pretty color but that’s about it.  Out.  Now please go away.

  • TSkot

    Awkward, but pretty enough: IN

  • Mary229

I actually do like this better than the Oscar dress.  It’s something that I don’t love when I look at it closely but when i looked at it quickly in pictures where she seemed smiling and happy..I liked it.   Although, the gold top does remind me of a Halloween costume I wore in 2004.

  • tessasouthworth

  • This reminds me a lot of the dresses I used to make for my barbie dolls as a kid. Tube of fabric with a crapload of sequins.

  • This is her bathrobe for the after parties.

  • B_C_J

Out. It looks poorly fit and (I hate to say it) cheap. I actually prefer the rose colored Prada she wore to the ceremony despite all of its issues.  Her hair and makeup are beautiful.

  • ankali

OUT. I wouldn’t have thought that a Saint Laurent could look cheap, but… here we are.

  • teensmom99

IN.  I just like the column on her and I like the color.  The whole is better than the sum of the parts and I think she looked regal.

  • Maybe she went to H&M too?

  • Maybe she got tired of sucking it in?

    Either way, out.

  • OUT! It makes her look like a Doric column.

  • mmc2315

I can only conclude that she was feeling a bit bloated.  What a disappointment, no?  I had very high expectations after the pole dance.

  • CassandraMortmain

Out.  It’s a poorly fitted, unflattering, cheap-looking bedazzled blue sack.  She’s really had a thing about wearing garbage bags lately, hasn’t she?

Her Oscar dresses were such an epic fail that it does make me wonder what exactly was going on.  Did her stylist try to sabotage her?  Or more likely, did she just have a weird reaction to all the negative press she’s gotten about campaigning so hard?  And the negative reaction to her vag flash?  I saw some article yesterday titled “Why Does Everyone Hate Anne Hathaway?” so clearly this Anne-as-unlikeable meme is out there.  She’s certainly not America’s Sweetheart (TM), which Jennifer Lawrence just wrapped up, but I think that’s kind of what she was going for.  So the negative reaction to much of her pole-dancing has got to hurt.  Maybe these awful dresses were in some way a reaction to all that.

  • up with pod people

I like it so much better than what she wore to accept that I’m calling it an IN.

  • peachy

memaw whipped it up last week, and who could hurt poor memaw’s feelings by not wearing it? tsk tsk

  • snarkykitten

    bedazzled bedsheet

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t buy pregnant (at least not pregnant and showing) because she’s worn stuff that’s too revealing to hide anything visible within the last 2 weeks. Maybe pregnant and ordered a “just in case” I’m showing dress.

But I vote that she decided she’d eat in comfort and not worry if her tummy bloated just an inch or so.

As a dress it’s an under achievement but it’s not awful. (Ms. Klum was awful. Ms. MacCarthy was awful. You get my drift.) So I’m going with the very lowest case in.

  • Carly Warnock

    Shapeless. Out.

  • OUT Project Runway reject.

  • LaSylphide

A marginal IN because it’s an improvement over Pink And Pointy. A little shapeless, but she makes whatever can be made of it.

  • L.

    IN!  Pretty colors.

  • 4JJ

You’re not wrong. It is a nice colour, but the sequinny neckline is too heavy and is giving her a mid-clavicle lump you could store things in, and the bustline, if I may use that word in this context, completely flattens her chest.

  • j_anson

No, given that she had to know there was an 80%+ chance of being a victory dress? This is oddly… odd and awkward. It DOES look like she sewed it herself. OUT.

  • Looks like a high school drama produced costume. The home-ec kids did the sewing. Sew two rectangles of satin together and add some sequined fabric. Wa-LA! Sparkly stage look!

  • Out. “Home-sewn” is exactly the right description. “Unflattering” is a close second.

  • glennethph

You hit the perfect word: home-sewn.  Like I said of the other, there are PR rejects which looked better.

  • It looks like a body pillowcase with rickrack on it.  Out, but her face is in, and her teeth are amazing.

  • kschwarting

What is up with the sequined bibs this year?  Salma Hayek, I’m looking at you too.

  • Buffy

    out, ugly

  • Out.  She looks like something you squeeze out of a tube.  Never a good thing.

  • lobsterlen

Out. I love the color but the gold bib collar thing is laying funny. Does Ann hate her breasts? What is up with everyone mentioning her teeth?

  • libraangel

OUT. Oh, I can’t any more. Anne hardly ever looks good, and she should. And Anne – please, please buy a good bra, or at least one of those nipple-covers1

  • barbarienne

    No, you’re not wrong.

I’m going to assume that she just snapped after all those weeks of looking fabulous. “I CAN’T TAKE THIS ONE MORE SECOND I DON’T CARE WHAT THE FUCK I’M WEARING ANYMORE!”

  • nannypoo

There’s awkward and then there’s ugly. This is both.

  • jw_ny

not much to like about this except for the color.

  • rtuko

The IDEA of the dress is solid, and the silhouette works for her slim figure. Unfortunately, as said too many times in Project Runway, execution was poor.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

OUT. Pretty and striking concept, but major issues with fit and execution.

  • Out, but her makeup is nice

  • Anniebet

Out. Sad. She seriously needs a new stylist, one who can convince her that her unfettered little bosoms need help. Support, not surgery. And maybe a little bleach on that arm hair?

  • butterflysunita

    Shower curtain.  OUT.

  • Corazon Nunez

IN! You’re all grumps. I think it’s pretty!

  • Sarah Aronson

In! I think it’s pretty, too!

  • altalinda

Marginal in.  The color is lovely, the stuff around the neck works pretty well, her hair and makeup look tremendous, she’s happy.  It all counterbalances the shapeliness ever so slightly.

  • All weird boobs and OUT.

  • Looks like Betty Rubble. Out.

  • Now that she’s won (no last-minute upset, unfortunately), she can go away and not be in photos for a while.  Please.

  • MissAmynae

OUT. Even worse that it’s custom.

  • Bwin51

    Yup, dull and homemade looking.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

out out a thousand times out

  • poggi

I guess she is just done with the all the uncomfortable dresses that take effort to wear.  Maybe this and her Oscar dress are the equivalent of formal sweatpants.

  • StephanieLovesTLo

    This is an uber-OUT. Blech.

  • retro gone wrong. OUT. that fabric is too stiff.

  • chitowndg

In – if it were homemade it would be a wrinkled mess.

  • omg out oscar dress out anne hathaway outtttt

  • PaulaBerman

So OUT. She’s two for two on the dresses that made her bust look weird on Oscar night.

  • Adriana_Paula

Why does the collar thing not lie flat?  If it did, maybe Audrey Hepburn could have made it work.  As it is though…

  • bd73

it immediately reminds me of someone else. maybe a few someones from the 70s with their hair up in huge bouffants. and that makes it impossible to see her in it. she’s trying to be someone else. not recall them or update their classic look. just be them.

  • demidaemon

I think it’s ugly. Schmatta level ugly. OUT.

  • DarkWillow

It’s the third shot, the one where she’s walking, that makes me go with an IN. I get a strong I pression that this looked better in motion than in still shots.

  • patticake1601

She has perky boobs that shoot up into the air, she should have worn a strapless bra to round them down a little and yeah, the dress looks home sewn.

  • LittleKarnak

  • KittieLynnNYC

This looks like a hastily thrown together “Project Runway” fiasco.

  • Lisa_Cop

Small in, just because I like it better than the Prada she wore to the ceremony.

  • O H

What mole-y, hairy, spindly arms this gal has.  Ug.  Blue is NOT her color.

  • guest2visits

I think it’s a style that fits her frame beautifully; and she does look good- but the blue fabric might possibly not be as rich as it
could be, or as perfectly finished where it’s attached to the glittery collar. It’s not my favorite dress, nor was the pink one; but
she manages to make them both look kind of beautiful, inspite of the imperfection.

  • Donna Schmidt

  • Louise Bryan

Sorry, but it’s an OUT.  It looks like a strange hybrid of a nightgown with a sci-fi (and I mean that in the worst way) bondage fantasy costume.

  • OUT. She looks like she forgot to change after playing Inspector Spacetime in the dreamatorium.

  • O. Anderson

OUT! Mad at her. Changing the locks.

  • out… i love hedi slimane…maybe on Nicole Richie it may work..but on looks in Nina Garcia’s words “unfinished”

  • Verascity

She looks like Jade Jolie. OUT.

  • ratgirlagogo

    Horrible. OUT.

  • Susan Crawford

Oh, Annie. Such a sad turnout for the Oscars. We were expecting so much more than these two designs: Nipples la Duchesse on the carpet, and Madame Sequina for the after party. But hey, the campaigning paid off, because For an elderly dude, that little gilded Oscar still looks fine.

  • ms_kat

    Ugly.  And out.

  • Blerg. Out.

  • carolie_king

    Ick. OUT.

  • samo_samo

Out. The shape just isn’t working. The sequined ‘harness’ isn’t flattering at all.

  • Out. This from 1 of the only people who loved her pink Prada earlier in the evening.
Also, 4th pic cracks me up: she is NOT letting go of that thing – not for ANYone!

  • oohsparkley!

    Out. Unflattering.

  • It reminds me of the dress I wore to my junior prom. In 1968.

  • alaskahyoung

    Ugh. Out.

And you better stay away from the public eye for a while before I start hating you.

  • ikillplants

Poor girl. Out. I’m rooting for you, Annie!

  • ThaliaMenninger

What was she thinking? The husband is cute. The dress? Not at all. OUT as in OUTRAGE.

  • Ann

It looks like something made in a 1/2 day challenge on Project Runway that would get you sent home.

  • neofashionista

  • OUT. oh annie. so disappointing.

  • H2olovngrl

I like the Retro look of it. In.

  • mhlmh

Better than the pink dress. . . just barely, but it’s IN

  • jetpackdino

I might be out on a limb here, but I think she looks great.  I like this dress on her.  She looks happy and comfortable.

  • pdquick

What’s going on with the hubby’s tux? Too tight. Cell phone showing. Needs hemming. And is that a happy bump on the shiny part of his pants?  Somebody ran up two rectangles on the sewing machine and put some sequins on it. That’s an OUT even if she weren’t holding that Oscar, which is a travesty.

  • There’s a reason all these people who sew their own clothing are whining here – it’s because they don’t have anything better to do.  If they were that great then they would be too busy designing and creating outfits for stars to criticize her choice of dresses.

She looks fine to me – a bit of the 1960’s Liza or Barbara, but fine.  You’ll all just jealous she could pull off this “sheet” look without looking like a whale.
