After-Oscars IN or OUT: Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy

Posted on February 26, 2013

We’re going to have to correct an earlier point. Apparently, not all the ladies brought their A game to the after-parties.

Case in point:

Amanda Seyfried attends the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in a Givenchy red dress.

This is just … no. In fact, this is so very… no, that it immediately renders her stylist suspect. Who allows someone to put this on and then tells them it looks good on them? Those awful straps look like she’s sporting a week’s worth of luggage on her back and the giant red, backwards belt makes the look seem a little cheap.

We neither loved nor hated her Oscars dress – ironically, we said she’s a gal who needs more color –  but we’re coming down on the side of hate for this one. We’re having an immediate negative reaction to it that we can’t shake. We just hates it, precious.

And you?

Vote Now!

IN! It’s bold, colorful, and interesting!

OUT! She looks like she got TP’d.

Anne Hathaway’s own After-Oscars dress is still being voted upon and breathlessly awaits your opinion.

OUT. It is too bad, because the color is gorgeous, bu that neckline is unnecessarily fussy.

    • Nariya

That neckline is downright violent. It’s strangling her!

      • Louise Bryan

Agreed.  Oh and, by the way, OUT!

  • PastryGoddess

That’s a whole lot of stuff going on up around her neck

    • TRSTL

You literally took the words right out of my mouth!  I was actually wondering if that extra pair of straps and the thing around her neck was a self belt that her stylist(?) thought would be “edgier” done this way with a cheap belt?  IDK, it’s just weird..

      • Lori

The bit around her neck and the straps attached to that, plus the ghastly belt, are really killing this. If you lost those, I think this would be fine. As is, it’s absolutely an OUT.

  • hughman

She looks like a cat caught in a six-pack ring.

    • Sadie-Ann

If we had just cut them apart to save the dolphins then none of this would have happened!

    • Mistie Holler

Nothing you ever write in your life could ever possibly top that comment.

      • hughman

Oh gawd, don’t say that! I’m a writer!

        (but thanks, doll).

        • Mistie Holler

You deserve the Pulitzer of celebrity fashion blog comments sections. How’s that? 😉

    • j_anson

      Ha. THIS.

    • Celandine1

Succinct and freaking hilarious – as are most of your posts that I have had the pleasure of reading.

  • MilaXX

Hated the thumbnail, but yea gods, it got worse seeing the full view, and then the badly blended lipstick. Oh honey no.

    • Introspective

Someone screwed her yesterday 2x over. From one colorless and ill fitting dress to another bright but cheap one?? plus the yoga hair that went from an updo to a tired braid without losing the the sweaty workout effect??? And the makeup that was so phoned in??

Someday amanda youll have your big night. But it sure as fuck wasnt last night.

      • AthenaJ

Agreed, normally she is able to pull off quite a bit just based on the fact that she’s been genetically blessed… but this dress, hair, and makeup all makes it seem like she’s TRYING to look bad!

  • teensmom99

OUT.  she looks like she’s being trussed or like there’s something unsightly on her neck that she is hiding.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Aggressively ugly neck and boob torture device disguised as a dress. So OUT…

  • altalinda

    It’s just all right.  Out.

  • jkatkins

OUT. Too fussy and ill-fitting up top.  Belt is just weird.

  • mariposa29_88

OUT. The front of the dress is reaching up to strangle her…

  • Out. Color is great on her but that’s about it. It makes her look very hippy and the bodice is just weird.  ETA – why would you have straps on the boobs? It makes me become a 9 year old boy and think over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder. And I’m neither 9 nor a boy.

  • Ceur

Out. And she knows it, because it looks like she just cried.

  • butterflysunita

Marginal IN.  I don’t like the dress but am giving her credit for wearing such a striking color.

  • She looks like my cat when she got in my ribbon box.

    • TieDye64

      This! O-U-T

  • OUT.  but i like her hair.

  • OUT. ‘Nuff said.

  • formerlyAnon

I like her hair and the choker effect. Below the neck, it just goes to heck and never recovers.

    Odd and Out.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love her in red, but this is OUT.

  • jack_clementine

a begrudging out, its nice to see her in color but between the backwards belt and the odd  straps this just isn’t working for me

  • kimmeister

Isn’t that the dress she performed in with the Les Miserables cast during the tribute to movie musicals?  But yikes, that’s an out. That belt buckle on the back is just ridiculous (not to mention extremely uncomfortable to sit in, I imagine).  And her lip color appears to have been applied by a blind person.

    • Comus

Yes, and the colour did look striking on stage, and fitted with the tricolor theme – but without Eddie Redmayne’s arms wrapped around her, the bodice is just too overworked, when she’s on her own …

  • Is that the one she wore onstage for the Les Mis’ performance?

  • Way out. Straps are so awful it took a second look to notice the bad braid. Her hair is so pretty it looks OK from the front.

  • Out.  Macrame ribbon tits = not a good look.

  • Whoops, double posted by accident.

  • Isn’t this what she wore when singing in the Les Mis performance during the actual show?

  • antheapena

  • gdougs

Between this and her Oscar dress I’m starting to think she had some hickeys on her neck she needed to cover up or something… Also those straps, the braid, the purple eye makeup, and the belt are all awkward and weird. OUT.

  • Judy_J

OUT.  The multitude of straps around her neck and shoulders is hideous. And the backward belt isn’t helping.

  • Sara__B

OUT. (Please note: She’s near the top of my Irrational Celebrity Dislike List, so she’s almost always OUT for me.)

  • OUT. I initially reacted positively to the color, but the dress up close does not bear up.

  • What I didn’t understand, even during the Les Mis number, is why she/her stylist decided to do all the pastel makeup knowing that she would also be wearing a red dress.  It doesn’t work at all.

  • DamiaRain

It’s bold, colorful and it’s OUT!

  • OUT. Beautiful color, but the dress itself is way too fussy. I hate the yoga/errand hair, too. And her clutch is big enough to carry a laptop in.

  • Super_Red

In In In!! I fell in love with this watching her on stage singing and I was so happy to see you feature it here, and somewhat dismayed you’re so against it. I think she looks positively stunning.

    • MilaXX

I don’t think that’s the dress she sang in.

      • Super_Red

I just watched the clip again to be sure– it is. 🙂

        • MilaXX

It works better as a stage costume than an actual outfit

          • formerlyAnon

            Very much so.

      • Judy P

It is. It sparked a mega-argument at the Oscar party I attended.

  • Annabelle Archer

    OUT. Big. Red. Fug.

  • No belt, no bondage straps and she’d look fierce. Too bad — OUT.

  • Jack Smart

Out. She has no idea what she’s doing.

  • RED! The blood of angry men! And overwrought neckline and frou frou skirting.

    • Yuval Dinoor

I was totally thinking about that! 🙂

  • CeeQ

All the shenanigans around her neck is putting me off. OUT.

  • krelnick

Sheboygan High School 4th of July float.  Outsies.

  • OUT.  I damn near gagged when i saw it.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

Looks like a high school craft project. Out

  • BeeBeauNYC

OUT – she looks like she got caught in her ribbon during her rhythmic gymnastics class!

  • Stubenville

    Fire her gays!

  • Amy

It’s like she walked in and screamed “the 80’s are back! check out my Goodwill belt!”

  • l_c_ann

That somewhat po’ed look on her face is often seen on elementary school teachers faces when they ask, ” Who lauched that spitball?”

  • fringebenefit

  • this must be from the horror movie inspired collection that was posted lately. the dress is chocking her.

    oh yeah: OUT

  • Anniebet

I just can’t get over those lumpy wrinkly lips and the clashing earrings, and the office folder clutch. And yet another high neck dress, and the straps of doom, and the weird belt, and… well, I could go on, but.. At least her green eyes are lovely.

  • MzzPants

Poor girl looks tortured, from head to toe.  OUT.

  • clevRcat

The top reminds me of the way my kids use ribbon to wrap presents — haphazard.  OUT.

  • Aly Light

That is one drag-a-licious neckline. And not in a good way. OUT.

  • appliquer

Out. Everything she wore that evening looked like she had multiple bruises on her neck to cover up.

  • jmorino08

Out! Those straps up top look like a Project Runway challenge gone wrong. And the volume at her hips really unflattering. Plus, I don’t think tulle should be that stiff and mopey.

  • kmk05

OUT. It looks better in motion, I have to give it that, but it’s the waist and hips that are killing me: it poofs out without being an A-line, and it makes her look badly proportioned. The eye makeup is also too heavy for such a fussy dress. But the colour is A!

  • Mazenderan

OUT.  It’s just not her.  The straps are fussy, and the colour is too much.  I’m not sure with what’s gone wrong with her hair and make-up, but neither are doing anything for her.  She looks drained.

  • procrastinatrice

Meh. I don’t get the hate for the dress. The clutch and the shoes are horrible though. And also, she is going to be stunning even in a garbage bag. So let’s eat it, bitter kittens.

  • Susan Collier

And the hair and the makeup! She looks like she’s in her 40s.

  • lbl

I always wonder how a stylist can be so great with one client and so horrible with another. Apparently her stylist is Elizabeth Stewart the same person who works with Cate Blanchett. Cate. Blanchett. What the hell is she doing with Amanda?

And yes, this is an OUT because those straps are fug.

    • MilaXX

Cate has the fashion chops to handle some of the more difficult looks, Amanda does not.

      • IMNAngryLiberal

That is the whole thing right there.  Amanda gives off a 60’s starlet Sandra Dee kind of vibe — Cate Blanchett gives off an “I’m a Goddess, bow down, vibe”.

  • poggi

The dress isn’t great, but the belt brings it to truly awful.  OUT.  Way out.

  • Caitlin_G

Another site said she had a lot of design input in this so maybe her stylist was helpless in saving her from her own disaster? OUT

  • Janet B

I wonder how she feels wearing this dress.

Without the straps it’s just another strapless dress, with the straps it’s a torture device.

  • TAGinMO

Dear God the HIPS. How does a garment make a little slip of a thing like Amanda Seyfried look hippy?? OUT.

  • Snailstsichr

Take away the belt and all the strappy things and it might have been something – pretty red strapless dress. I don’t think this belt should go with this dress. I’m not entirely sure this is the best color for her, but I like the lipstick. Alas, I can’t give an in for lipstick alone (well unless it was way more spectacular than this), so this is an OUT.

  • tessasouthworth

Is there really any question here? This is so OUT that it is the Oscar’s equivalent of Blayne du Soleil’s original “pooping TP” mess from PR S5. And I just can’t with the vinyl-esque clutch and the inverted belt. Nina is shielding her eyes as she cries out, “Chip, chip, chip!” And that BRAID is gonna give me some nightmares tonight, I tell you. Thanks, guys, for giving me a new depreciation of  this lady!

  • looks like went into the limo, had really loud ugly sex with…monkeys, then did the walk of shame back to…her stylists apartment and threw this on? the hair and makeup look…rushed (or maybe she did it in the light of a streetlight with a compact? then tried walking and arranging the dress to get to a party… she looks dirty and smelly and wondering where exactly her underwear is… the lamp shade? rearview mirror? purse? sidewalk? go home, take a bath and try again….next year. OUT OUT OUT.

  • OrigamiRose

OUT.  Toilet-papered is the perfect description of this mess.

  • nannypoo

Hideous. I don’t think she likes it either. Look at the expression on her face.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

IN. I like the straps, belt & color. I just don’t like the iPad case clutch.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT, OUT, OUT.  This is just hiddy (and I didn’t like her Oscar dress neither, so there).

  • Jangle57

The color is gorgeous on her but that neckline is ridiculously complicated – OUT

  • rh33

Out. TP’d is the exact description.

  • JP

If the dress didn’t have that weird neck scarf, it would have been gorgeous, and much better than her Oscar gown.

What’s with the neck things, anyway? Both gowns Amanda wore hid her neck — is she hiding an inappropriate hickey?

  • Tatiana Luján

ugly dress in a very good color.
The color isn’t enough to make this not an OUT.

  • ellabob

Pretty much hate it… was this the dress she wore on stage for the medley?

  • It looks like that wrap they put on your arm after you give blood — like some of that was festooned around her neck and bodice.

  • Sooooo much hideous. girl, that is NOT your dress. wrong shade of red for her. makeup looks bad – could just be clashing with bad shade of red? too heavy AND too poofy – who knew that was even possible?!

  • SewingSiren

In. Can’t say exactly why. Maybe just because it isn’t a sequin column. But I do think it’s pretty, even though I would never pick it myself.

  • It’s out. Those straps, that belt… Yeesh.

  • marilyn

    Out.  On the dowdy side.

  • IN, only because I like it better than her RC dress.  YES, it is her performance dress.  My friend and I watched the Les Mis performance repeatedly for over an hour, so yes, I am confident in that.

  • homofascist

I am not sure this would even look good on someone with a PhD in dress wearing, so I don’t know who she should even send it to (although I guess that is why this isn’t a “Girl that is not your dress” post).  OUT OUT a thousand times OUT!

  • conniemd

Out. I could have even dealt with the tortuous neck straps if then went with a sleek bottom, but that full tulle mess. Yuck. Too.much.going.on.

  • LaSylphide

  • drdirection

she sure doesn’t look like she feels pretty

  • in! me likey

  • Vickiefantastico

I’m going with out. I don’t think red is her color.

  • Martha Deutsch

OUT. That collar makes me feel claustrophobic.

  • luluransom

  • PaulaBerman

OUT. She is beyond gorgeous but that dress is fugtastic.

  • This is awful. I am not sure who could have pulled this dress off but it sure isn’t her!

  • SO, so bad. The hair is worse, totally inappropriate for the venue.

  • OUT. I don’t hate the dress but it looks too fussy on her – and it isn’t helped by the fact that she looks peeved, if not outright exasperated, in every shot. “Enough with the pictures, where’s the bar?”

  • ankali

Out for the complicated straps, but I don’t hate this on a visceral level or anything.

  • unbornfawn

Wrong color for her. Hate all that crap around her neck. OUT.

  • AnaRoW

I don’t hate the dress but I’m not sure it’s right for her.  Also I just learned that it was Amanda’s dress that forced Anne Hathaway to make a last minute change for the Oscars, which I think was very nice of Anne since she was the one nominated.

  • prettybigkitty

Out.  Unless she was performing ribbon dances later on at the after party.  Then apropos.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The belt was a HUGE mistake, it puts all the focus on that s…stuff, stuff around her neck. Out.

  • another_laura

Out.  Tragic, sloppy, bad color.  ick.

  • I don’t think she got TP’d but its totally OUT

  • lalahartma

  • jamiewrites

  • jw_ny

    Obvious OUT!

  • Trisha26

OUT. I know, let’s add a GIANT patent-leather belt because there’s clearly not enough going on.

  • DinahR

OUT.  That dress is hard on the eyes and tweaks her proportions unpleasantly.   Her hair and makeup look odd here as well.  I blame the color of the dress.

  • Call me Bee

I’m on the fence with this one.  Love the color, love the skirt and even that big-ass belt.  But it would have been so much better with just one strap at the neck.  Even still, I say IN, albiet a tiny one.

  • BrooklynBomber

What the hell is that? It’s not just out – it’s way out.

  • Agree 100%.  If I had to pick between her two looks I’d reluctantly opt for the awards gown, but it’s clearly just the lesser of two evils.  Unless she had a tracheotomy between the theater and the party there’s no reason for that neck wrap.  OUT.

  • Imasewsure

IN but just because she’s young and it’s kind of bold and interesting (kinda ugly too but it’s not the worst I’ve seen)

  • No. At least she looked happy in the other dress (you’re right about the color, of course.) OUT.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

OUT. Can someone tell me why she wore THREE, yes THREE (Oscar dress, performance dress, and this one), dresses with that weird choker neckline? Did something happen to her neck? What is she hiding?

  • Tapetum

I didn’t know you could make a dress out of crepe party streamers.

Now that I see I’m wrong, I still don’t know why you’d want to.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

OUT! Mummified. And just no. The color looks great with her eyes though.

  • frannyprof

OUT. I think we can all agree that it’s official: Givenchy is NOT Ms. Seyfried’s designer. She has been trying to make it work with Givenchy all awards season. It never worked.

  • Oh, what a crazy macrame mess looped around her neck
Unless I’m mistaken, the belt is made of cheap pleather
Too bad –  the color looks good on her

  • zelavie

    OUT.  Ugly dress.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  Maybe I could have lived with the shoulder straps if not for the Lucy Westenra neck coverage.

And the belt is just weird.  And the skirt is really boring compared to the overworked bodice.

  • kikisayshi

If this was in black, she would look like a dominatrix madam. OUT

  • demidaemon

OUT. It looks like her head was cut off and reattached with a red piece of fabric. I can’t get that image out of head. Also, the make-up feels distinctly aging on her.

  • out. this is awful.

  • Judi Townsend

Out and what is with that purse?

  • Wow. I pretty much hate this from top to bottom. The hairstyle looks sloppy. The straps remind me of weaving potholders in 5th grade. And I hate the matchy platforms. Horrible.

  • Zippypie

This is just awful!  The color, the mummy wrappings, the hair, that cheap ass belt.  And what’s with wearing two neck harness dresses in one night?

  • guest2visits

    I don’t hate it; in fact that last profile shot is kind of beautiful. But her beautiful face and hair cannot save a very strange design;
it’s not horrible, but it’s not really her gown either.  Small In.

  • lizajane1776

The color is great, I don’t mind the strap around her neck, but the rest of the straps make it too busy and that skirt is an abomination.

  • elemspbee

In. It may not be werq but this is not out. the soft bondage going on on the top and that belt–very cool. It’s super interesting, not just some pastel fish tail billowy dress.

  • tired_mommy

    Out–Country Music Awards

  • pulpytomato

Eh, I don’t get the hate for this gown. It’s not fabulous, but the color is great on her, the hair is great, and it looks better on her than her red carpet gown.

  • j_anson

OUT. From a distance it looked okay to me, but it totally fell apart once I could see detail.

  • rumcg66

Uuuugggh, OUT. The whole look is just terrible (except the color).

  • OUT, totally TP’d… red TP… which is really unsettling if you think about it which I won’t. Moving on.

  • Bulgarian Vulgarian

OUT on hair and makeup alone. That’s exactly how I used to do my makeup in college when I had to go to a 9:00 A.M. class after pulling an all-nighter and I was trying to look alive. (Fooled nobody.) And I used to braid my hair more or less like that at the start of finals week and then just sleep on it all week without combing it, and it would end up looking exactly like Amanda’s hair looks in these pictures by the time finals were over. What she’s wearing is a moot point. You can’t come back from that.

  • Lisa_Cop

OUT. Liked the McQueen much better.

  • sk8tfan

It makes me think of an interpretive dance costume where the costume is symbolizing  dripping blood after having Amanda’s been bitten by Dracula or garroted.

  • ratgirlagogo

Gross. Doesn’t fit and makes her look lumpy.

  • decormaven

Gah! Fake braid and that fugly belt. Out, out, and then again, out!

  • I like it. 🙂

  • Ack. OUT. That neckline is just fussy and weird, and I’m not 100% sold on that shade of red for her. I think she can do red, but not that particular one.

  • Judy_S

I actually like it, so I will voice a lone (it seems) IN. it’s  bit silly but she looks pretty.

  • shelley514

I like the dress, but just not on her.

  • This looks like a home-made prom dress circa 1993. The OUTest of OUTs.

  • B_C_J

OUT. The ribbon embellishment over the bust is messy and distracting. The strap running around her neck is ill fitting. The belt is incongruous with the overall soft concept of the dress. This does not work at all.

  • mozzer0906

OUT, hate it, everything about it but the color

  • Le_Sigh

OUT.  That color is gorge, but all the froofraw around her neck makes me hope she gets into a divalicious bitch fight with someone so they can rip it all those loose ends off her.

  • mjude

  • f_yeah_marie

  • alyce1213

OUT.  Utterly hate everything about it.

  • Lilithcat

There is way to much going on at the top.  Take of that silly dog collar and its attached straps, get rid of the patent leather belt, and you might have something.  As it is, OUT.

  • Dot

All the froofy strappy nonsense at the top makes it an out.

  • MissFern

she was really into chokers that night.  out.

  • Alyssa

Out. I like the color, but this dress is not doing her any favors! The whole upper part of it is not flattering her body in any way.

  • PeggyOC

I think this is also the dress she wore for the “One Day More” performance during the ceremony.  I thought then that it wasn’t a great look.

    •  Yes, It is definitely very similar if not the same.  I had a love/hate relationship with it during the Cast number.  It did seem appropriate there, and, I always love red.

  • barbarienne

(Lowercase only because hey, it’s a color.)

I continue to be amazed that someone who is so damn gorgeous can keep walking out the door without WOWing the hell out of the world. I’m convinced her stylist read “Harrison Bergeron” and took it too much to heart. The girl is being actively debeautified by everything she wears.

  • Out. I loved the intricacy of her Oscars dress, it was only the color that made me apathetic.

  • stubbornthoughts

Yikes, out. She literally looks like she’s on a leash.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  It’s a bit too bondage from the bust up.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Quick, let’s make a gown out of a red parachute by slapping a belt on it.

  • tereliz

OUT. Too much going on and not enough of it is good. The skirt is pretty heinous but I barely noticed how hippy it makes her look since I was so busy trying to figure out what’s happening with the bodice. Too bad since she looks great in red!

  • alaskahyoung

Out. And you couldn’t even bother to do a decent job applying/paying someone to decently apply your lipstick? Seriously, what’s going on with her lips? On the close up picture you basically see the lip liner with a bit of faded lipstick. It’s awful.

On a second though, I can’t really expect good make up from you when you’re wearing this dress. What was I thinking.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I like her hair and I like the color, but that dress? OMG NO!

  • aykhan

Out – it’s too fussy and overwhelming.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  For the straps, hair AND makeup.

  • i like the dress; i just don’t know if i like it on HER.  her coloring and features are both so delicate — i think she could do a bold, simple line in a solid color (just maybe not THIS color) rather than a complicated dress in a bold hue.  i don’t know.  i just know that this would look good on … well, anne hathaway, maybe.  but not amanda.

  • neofashionista

red bondage straps are NOT ok

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Out.  And she looks really naffed off.

  • In. Red is her color.

  • OUT. tacky and unfinished. i think she needs to cut ties with givenchy

  • libraangel

OUT. Bondage, belt, fat hips, oh my!

  • OUT, and how are you all telling Amanda from Emma from Emma exactly? They all look alike to me. That’s never a good thing for a star.

  • PeaceBang

    OUT. Terrible dress, horrible make-up.

  • JauntyJohn

    OUT. Just… no.

  • mhlmh

Yes its a horrible dress but her face is so beautiful. Even looking uncomfortable and miserable (probably b/c the s&m dress is choking her) she looks gorgeous. And I really like her hair. Still I guess it’s an OUT.

  • E. D.

OUT.  Take out the center V-strap and the neckband and it doesn’t suck.

  • ccm800

whoa – she looks about  3’foot nothing in that walking  pic -which is probably  about right.
