After-Oscars 2013: Fan Bingbing in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on February 26, 2013

Yes, yes; this dress is stunning and Fan Bingbing is a magnificent creature of fashion and sparkle and all that is good in the universe; we can all agree on THAT.

Fan Bingbing attends the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar party in an Oscar de la Renta gown.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Frida Gustavsson

It looks like it’s floating about 3 inches in front of her head.

Bingbing sweetie, next time, have your makeup artist flown over with you. Apparently, no one in Hollywood knows how to make up an Asian goddess’s face.

I think the flash from the camera likely made her make-up look 5 shades too light and thus the “floating” effect.  Great dress and accessories in usual Fan Bing Bing form.

    • MilaXX

but usually when you are strapless the MUA uses body makeup so the head and shoulders match. This is just a bad look.

      • Sobaika

Exactly, a good makeup artist would know how this could photograph.

  • MilaXX

UGH! Her face isn’t even the same color as her body. I looks like faded kabuki makeup.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Tiny lady, great big dress. Even an Asian Goddess like Bingbing can’t pull that off.

    • Candigirl1968

It looks like it’s a size too big.  Maybe a belt might have helped.

  • barbarienne

    Is she wearing stilts?

This is the most beautiful dress anyone has ever made out of a patio umbrella.

    • conniemd

Wow, you’re right. Here legs and torso can’t possibly be that long, unless she’s got shoes with 5 inch platforms.

      • j_anson

        a) It may be partly an illusion created by a high-waisted dress, and
        b) She almost certainly is wearing 5-inch heels, that’s not all that unusual for high fashion.

        • Mistie Holler

…also c) the angle of the stripe and the fullness of the skirt are lengthening her.

    • nellcote

Oscar does his best work with patio umbrellas.

  • MarissaLG

I love this gown, but if you’re in a place in your life where you’re able to wear Oscar de la Renta, you’re in a place in your life where you can get a manicure.

    • lrhg

Generally agreed, but maybe she just doesn’t like them? Any kind of color on my nails drives me to distraction; it’s all I can see.

    • True dat!

    • wisenhar

Funny, I had the opposite reaction. I thought it was nice to see someone who didn’t have the pinterest and/or frito nails for a change.

      • i agree!  i remarked to myself that’s a great manicure with clear polish.  very chic.

      • MarissaLG

It’s totally fine not to wear polish- but it doesn’t look like her nails were fixed up at all.

  • Dot

I prefer the runway styling. The necklace that the model is wearing is gorgeous.

    • SouthernGirlRena

       I agree!

    • Precisely. This is accessorized all wrong, except for the earrings. A case of conflicting contractual obligations?

    • oldbobbydraper

agreed, it looks infinitely better on the model.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like this dress for her. It makes her look wide. I didn’t like the pink one either. Usually I think she is totally fabulous, so I hope she won’t be mad at me.

    •  I almost like it.  In a Serving up Prom 1985 Realness sort of way.  But yeah, a lot of dress for tiny girl.

  • Annabelle Archer

Is this her take on Kabuki makeup?  I have concerns.  Also, I liked the big ass necklace on the model, wish she’d given it a shot.

  • Sara__B

Fan Bingbing disappoints! Say it ain’t so, T Lo!

Her styling was off all night, especially her hair. I realize she’s an Asian goddess, not a Hollywood goddess, but I saw her in three different gowns, and that hair style was wrong for each one.

  • Tatiana Luján

The dress doesn’t fit well on her, either.

  • Glammie

Christ, she looks like she’s dressed in some wrapping paper I have from Ikea.  And her face looks like what kid drew when she was six.

    No, just no.

  • butterflysunita

Am I not critical enough?  Because I think she looks gorgeous.  I love that dress on her and her accessories are lovely–bracelet, watch, earrings.  Perhaps she needed a different makeup artist but she still looks stunning.

  • Oh man, whoever did her makeup didn’t realize that pale people with golden undertones need different foundation than pale people with pink undertones. I hate that. They completely washed her out.
I like the texture of the dress in the closeups. Looks like ribbons.

    • meowing

Looks to me like they did about 4 pounds of rice powder on her face.  Bad kabuki primer.  Better foundation undertones would have made a world of difference (speaking as a pale kitten).

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Fan Bingbing… now starring as a collectible bell from the Pac 8 series! With extra special Tropicana lip butter!

  • tallgirl1204

Not liking the dress.  Cabana drapes, Scarlet O’Hara style.

I feel like I am commitinga sacrilage here but…. I’m not crazy about the fit of the bodice on here.  It looks much more fitted on the model, Fan’s seem a little lumpy on the sides.  And I like this dress with the uber statement necklace for balance.  And I strongly believe the make up issue is more the flash of the camera creating a shadow effect on her neck and shoulders while highlighting her face too much.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

What IS it with the ill-fitted bodices?  Is it worse this season than usual or am I just more hyper-critical.  I have seen more dresses ruined (or at least their impact lessened) by poorly fitted bodices this RC season.

  • teensmom99

I think the dress needs the model’s necklace.

    • Stubenville

I think Ms. Bingbing probably owns nicer.

  • Kyle Crawford

The only question here is WHY WHY WHY did Anne Hathaway NOT wear this to get her Oscar?????

  • kimmeister

What’s freaking me out more than the color of her face are the overkill lashes.  It’s like wooly caterpillars are crawling on her lids, egads!

    •  They are making for a weird Kim K vibe, and I don’t EVER want to think of the sleaze that is Kim K in association with the magnificence that is Fan Bingbing.

  • Any dress that has pockets automatically trumps any quibbles I have with the makeup.

  • CeeQ

As an Asian gal – I can totally attest to this!! Every single formal event I go to, I have been made-up whiter than I need to be. I’m FORCED, darlings, FORCED, to do my OWN make-up like a peasant. Such is my suffering and you should all send me $$$ to ease it. Also to buy some decent make-up obvs.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this dress so very much. I agree with everyone else about the fit in the bodice – looks better on the model. That aside, Fan Bingbing is glorious. Also, pockets!

  • Circus tent anyone?

  • She looks gorgeous, but yes, you can see that she’s wearing an inch of foundation.

  • Yeah…it’s leaning a bit toward “Geisha” for my liking. Also: she should’ve worn THIS on the real RC!!

  • Nicholas

    Zombie geisha.

  • asians? in HOLLYWOOD!?!?

  • appliquer

Not loving the color of the dress on her. And it’s not just the makeup.

  • That cuff is AMAZING.

  • snarkykitten

That dress is a little circus tent-y. Not my favorite look she’s worn

  • Judy_J

Oh, Fan.  Some errant makeup artist clearly used the wrong shade of foundation on your beautiful face.  So very, very wrong.

  • The closeup of the dress material looks like a patio umbrella.

  • needs a hint of color somewhere-  brighter lips, red earrings, colorful clutch, something.  love the watch !

  • poggi

The bodice seems to turn her into a square. It doesn’t appear to fit right or taper in at the waist like it does on the model.  I don’t love it on her.

  • StelledelMare

Forget the makeup for a sec, I NEED her watch.

  • tessasouthworth

Yes, it’s dramatic, and yes, it’s superior to the magenta napkin folds she wore on the red carpet, but still it misses the mark. As a Fan-shipper, I has a sad to see her for the first time in recent memory looking anything less than flawlessly spectacular- I don’t want to believe that she really is a mortal after all!

  • jilly_d

Makeup is terrifying. I’ve been lusting over that gown for weeks but it looks Extremely poorly fitted here.

  • I like that her face is freaky. She’s like a scary doll. The kind you can’t have watching you while you sleep.

  • LOVE the delicately coiled rose ring you can see in the close up. Although a bit odd alongside such powerful stripefullness

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I think there’s something wrong with the fit of the dress or the fit and height of the skirt… Something is off I can’t put my finger on what.

  • Okay folks…sometimes I swear T’lo is just f’ing with their beloved unborn fawns… I had to google “Fan Bingbing” and THEN make sure this was not one of those elaborate practical jokes where some one CREATED a fake wikpedia posts…
Could you maybe come up with a side menu for some of these folks? (like a ‘here are people you could know, or pretend to care about, for the next 10-12 minutes of fame?) Really? (I know in the days of wackadoodle names like Bruno Mars and Ms Gaga). but God Love y’all (I am from the deepsouth, I can say that bitches) for covering the stellar (Dame Mirrin) to um…this “Chinese actress, singer and producer”.

    Bless you T’lo.

  • Indigo54

This is just plain scary!  I need a drink!

  • AViewer44

Aaargh.  Poor woman.  My thoughts exactly.

  • prettybigkitty

Of course she would wear my favorite gown from ODLR.  Too bad for the scary face.

  • BrooklynBomber

Haha! She needs the face from the award carpet to be with this far superior dress!

  • That is a *HUGE* dress for a tiny lady.  Not liking.

  • VicksieDo

This dress was ALL over Pinterest, it’s stunning!  Not fitting properly across the chest though…

  • Imasewsure

    I don’t even like the dress…maybe I can’t see beyond the makeup…

  • KittieLynnNYC

As I’ve said before, if you have a name as awesome as FAN BING BING, you can do and wear whatever you want. The makeup could be better though-true that.

  • I’d have liked this dress a lot more if I hadn’t seen Marion Cotillard’s dress first.

  • quiltrx

I so adore this dress, and I’m glad to see someone ‘worthy’ like her wearing it!

The makeup is a little washed-out, isn’t it?  I’ll just keep looking at that gorgeous tulip bracelet to distract me.

  • Zippypie

I would love the dress if the bodice was fitted properly.  The side seams seem off.  Putting that aside, she is gorgeous.  However, whoever put that white powder on her face needs to be spanked.

  • RzYoung

I just love that little pave rose ring, sigh, all the lovley jewellery.

  • decormaven

Her makeup for the awards show was flawless, so I’m going to guess this look was hastily done between awards show and VF party. Pity. I need to look back at her first look- weren’t her nails done for it? Her cuticles look a bit rough here; again, maybe they were quickly stripped, with a fast clear coat applied for the party. I could be more on board for the dress if it were fitted properly in the bodice and a strong necklace to play off of it. That cuff is A-MA-ZING.

  • Susan Crawford

Such a shame that the make-up team made her look so wan and unlike her ethereal self. The dress is beautiful, but it overwhelms her with way too much volume. On the other hand, I would cut a beyotch for that cuff! Wowie-zowie. My fave piece of bling from the entire evening.

  • I want her bracelet. The dress is so-so. I think it makes her look oddly proportioned and the fit isn’t great.

  • Le_Sigh

Ooof – wrong makeup for this dress.  Her head doesn’t look like it belongs on her body (different shades) and her eyes don’t look like they belong on her head.  Its like someone photoshopped different bits of our Lady BingBing and smashed them together in a fashion collage.

    I like everything else though.

  • Holy smokes! Her foundation is AWFUL!

  • MissAnnieRN

This is the dress that made every single one of the BK’s threaten to commit acts of violence against ONE ANOTHER to get their hands on.  It’s a pretty special dress if the BK’s threaten to cut one another for it.  I am glad it was her who first wore it’s original iteration because I believe I have seen another starlet (not very memorable) wear something attributed to this runway look.  I liked the strong necklace with it better.  Would have actually liked to See Shelly O in this dress.  It screams summer to me, though.

  • Jessica Rowe

    I want that ring.

  • brookemeghan

Love that delicate rose ring! Who made it?

  • melanie0866

    Covet that bracelet.

  • EEKstl

Yes, ultra-scary.  Also, dress is too large; she’s floating in it.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I want that cuff she is wearing.  NOW.  🙂

  • i think this dress really needs that statement necklace.

  • librarygrrl64

Also, the bodice could be fitted better.

  • libraangel

Oh Fan – I love you, and usually you are so elegant, but this time…….! And the material – the white stripes – have little stripes on them OOOHHH! I don’t like!

  • PeaceBang

Oh, I thought it was just me. My first thought upon seeing these pictures was, “Oh my God, something’s wrong with Fan Bing Bing and they’ve sent someone in a Fan Bing Bing mask to represent her.”

  • Joey Melliza

    ill fitting!

  • THe fit is all wrong. The waist is too high and on a short gal like her (well, she seems short) it is really unflattering.

  • Nisha vedhara

Does  anyone know where her earing are from?.. thanks

  • Marybeth Klink

SPF moisturizer can do this in photographs
