WERQ: Kerry Washington in Rodarte at SAG Awards

Posted on January 28, 2013

We handed out a couple “attagirls” to Tina Fey and January Jones this morning. So if you want to see the difference between an “Attagirl” and a “WERQ!” you need only consider the previous posts, and then scroll down.

Kerry Washington attends the SAG Awards 2013 in a Rodarte gown accessorized with a Judith Leiber clutch and Fred Leighton jewelry.

Perfection.

That is one seriously toned-down Rodarte. Usually their stuff is not at all red-carpet appropriate, but this is lovely. You WERQ that ice princess shit, girl! ICY SNAPS OF ATTITUDE.

I’m not sure I think the sequined edgy top goes with the frou frou lacy ruffled bottom

    • mskgb

It’s this very combination that keeps the dress far away from the wedding territory it would inhabit if the top matched the mood of the bottom.

    • Little_Olive

Oh, I am very sure it does NOT.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Ice skater as bride.  It does not WERQ for me.

  • Sobaika

PURE – FUCKING – FECTION. She can sure wear clothes!

    • gabbilevy

Between this and the horse dress, I *love* that she’s getting in the subtle nods to her spaghetti western flick. The bodice is ever-so-slightly barmaid corset, the lace at the back feels very mid-19th century with the tiered skirts.

She didn’t have to go shopping in the saloon girl section of the Halloween store for this to feel part of the Django world, and for that, WERQ!

  • Rand Ortega

    Wow.

  • lexilexi

It’s wonderful, but my slight quibble:  the flat front of her hair.  Not enough to take away a WERQ, however.

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

The hair is not my favourite. Actually I hate it. And the dress is okay but those ruffles down the back are hideous.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

The hair bugged me too and I don’t care for the back of the dress

    • julnyes

Oddly, this is the first I liked her hairstyle since she started the pole dance for Django. The whole look is working for me.

    • Kimbolina

Yeah, the hair is bugging me.  From straight on, the flat front coupled with the right side being SO tightly pulled back makes it look like she just has a weird hairpiece stuck to her forehead…

  • Alyssa

I LOVE this look on her! She looks beautiful, and I want that clutch & those earrings! WERQ!!!

  • jw_ny

oh…it all works really great until I scroll down to that lacy skirt.  Love the bodice a lot.  Pretty…hair & makeup.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

    Doesn’t look bridal

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I can see why it is a WERQ, because she is and she does, but that’s a horrible dress.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it horrible, but that lace skirt is just very hard to deal with. But yeah, she looks pretty fucking amazing.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It’s a bedazzled tablecloth! That lace looks itchy and the spangly bits are half-arsed. She is the one who makes this look amazing.

        • eowyn_of_rohan

Agreed.  I just do not like this one bit.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I agree, that lace reminded me of plastic “lace” in disposable party tablecloths… and I’m sure it’s not. The bodice is not to my taste at all either. But I can agree that it’s only a matter of personal taste that’s separating this from a WERQ for me.

    • kimmeister

The silver sequins and the lace on the sides of the skirt look cheap to me, even though I’m sure they aren’t.

      • kelsita421

I feel it’s the same problem most bridal gowns have — I recently saw a photo of a friend’s dress for her June wedding and was like “oh… that looks like a sparkly lace tablecloth…” — but then I saw her dress up close at the shop and it was truly exquisite! And I had a total “a-ha!” moment that some dresses will never be photographed to show their true beauty. Maybe that’s what’s happening here? A “you have to see it up close to believe it” moment?

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Possibly. And some you have to see in motion to really get it.

    • Chickadeep

Yep…this WERQ is pure presentation and attitude. In *spite* of the dress (and the hiddy clutch) rather than because of it.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I think I’ve worked out the T+Lo hierarchy:  WERQ, Attagirl, IN, OUT, Girl That’s Not Your Dress, Chloe Sevigny.

  • Patricia Gillett

So glad she did not wear a necklace to compete with the neckline of the dress. She’s accessorized beautifully.  I like the pony-tail, too. An updo would have made this look too bridal.

  • Diego!

She looks amazing but it’s not a WERQ for me.

    • EditKitten

Agreed. Just doesn’t quite reach that level.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

absolutely not. stiff. unflattering makeup and hair. miss havisham back and bottom.

  • Annabelle Archer

A bedazzled bodice and a lace curtains skirt? Werq?

My world is all upside down, because I’ve been in disagreement with T & Lo all day.

    • carolynmo

I agree with you, Annabelle, and respectfully disagree with TLo. I dislike the lace on this.

    • shayna61

So have I. I haven’t liked anything they’ve liked so far. And I was all set to agree with them until I saw the back. ::shudder::

    • EditKitten

Must be something in the air because I’m with you!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/KBNJ6GJTXYEE6BON3WGK6KEGT4 Elizabeth

I agree with Annabelle … I haven’t agreed with TLo all day (perhaps I have the flu?). I saw a big SAG Awards photo gallery earlier this morning, and there were some really lovely looks (wait until you see Viola Davis). I thought January Jones was a big miss, and when I saw Kerry, I thought, “Meh, it’s alright. She looks pretty, but that skirt is kinda awkward.” Dunno … none of these looks were making my favorites list compared to others.

    • medijie

Yep Anabelle, I’m with you too.  It looks like a bride with a comb-over to me.  She’s a beautiful girl, but I’m not feeling a WERQ.

  • imperfectlaura

She’s been so futuristic fabulous lately. Nothing else to say but WERQ IT GIRL!

  • Carly Warnock

I really think this looks more like a Versace than a Rodarte.
    Also, her hair is dreadful.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I saw this last night and yelled “WERQ!”.  Of course my husband had no idea why I was spouting acronyms.

  • Jecca2244

Ugh i’m planning a wedding so everything white reads bridal to me. I love love love her manicure. Anyone out there know the nail color?

  • Introspective

classically pretty. the django poledance had her in some complicated stuff, not all of which I liked, but this is just a tailored silhouette that plays to all of her strengths. hair and makeup are gorgeous.

nothing less than a werq would do here.

  • SophiaPehawkins

She looks lovely. Just lovely. /Blanche voice (and I actually mean it)

  • Carla_Charlton

What about the hair?!?  Doesn’t she need a little volume?

  • nannypoo

    Very polished and elegant.

  • snarkykitten

I dunno, it looks a little Bedazzled Bridal to me

    • Chickadeep

Looks like someone attacked an ’80s Gunne Sax dress with a Bedazzler and a couple of yards of lace from the discount rack at Walmart.

      • snarkykitten

        yeah it’s really cheap looking

  • http://twitter.com/CSMStyleDiary ‘Ana Fonua-Terrazas

100% Agree! She was definitely apart of my ‘Best Dressed’ list.  Seriously though, the lace, the bodice, her make-up & hair, it was everything!

  • Karen Maslowski

    She is breathtaking.

Two things, though: that deep side part, and the tablecloth lace ruffles on the back. Not a fan of either. But she looks fabulous in almost everything she wears. It must be excruciatingly difficult to pick one thing out of all the million choices she must have. Damn her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

It’s ok-but not interesting enough for me for a WERQ. And SMILE, woman!

  • Boricua in Texas

Finally a dress that actually fits the wearer correctly in the chest area.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

This looks like a contemporary wedding dress. No.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t get the universal love for her as a fashionista I guess. I think the dress is just ok, and her hair is total pinhead. Pretty enough (esp. her makeup) but nothing special… oh well…

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Gorgeous. Simply stunning. I think she absolutely breathtaking.

  • shayna61

Oh no! I was all set to agree with you on something today and then you had to go and show the back of this dress. That’s your grandmother’s curtains, dear. Not good. Very, very not good.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde chylde

    WERQ that blinged-out wench’s corset!

  • VicksieDo

A confident smile would have made this a WERQ, but she has kind of a scared look in every picture I’ve seen, so nope, nice try :-)

  • procrastinatrice

Nope. She looks good, but not WERQ good. The attitude isn’t there, the  side part in the hair is unattractive, and the difference in style between the top and the bottom of the dress only makes the outfit look mismatched–not balanced.

  • MissAnnieRN

I have a huge girl crush on Kerry Washington that started last Spring when Scandal showed up.  God I love that show.  Tony Goldwyn, swoon.

I like the risks she takes with her fashion choices.  I haven’t liked all of her choices for the Django poledance, but I like that it’s never boring.

Also, girl crush.  WERQ!  Snaps of snowy white fox, girlfriend!

  • E. D.

I don’t like the dress, but she works it.

  • Julie Liang

It’s a little too bridal for me?

    • http://twitter.com/NJedwina Edwina

It’s a bridal WERQ for sure.

  • Eva_baby

That is totally something Olivia Pope would wear!

    • MilaXX

She called it her Olivia Pope white in one of her RC interviews.

  • e jerry powell

    And she’s not standing pigeon-toed!

    She’s serving the over-the-shoulder!

I’m so happy I could cry.

  • warnerave

also not WERQ worthy for me..just okayish

    • http://twitter.com/NJedwina Edwina

Something about the hair narrowing her face doesn’t compliment the dress. But she does make a lovely bride.

  • Veronica Russek

    Don’t like it…

  • marilyn

    Gorgeous.

  • Flora O

I want to see more of that ring.

    Makeup is flawless.

  • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

I like it. Channeling Django with a ‘wild west saloon bride’ vibe.

  • kschwarting

Her face and hair look great, but the dress’ layers of white lace read “tablecloth” to me rather than “WERQ.”

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

something about her doesn’t sit right with me.  i can’t figure it out.  and that bugs me.  (it’s a vicious circle)

  • MilaXX

Perfection is exactly what I thought looking at these pictures. She wisely kept jewelry to a minimum and the makeup/hair are just right.
    Love her.

  • butterflysunita

Surprised so many other bitter kittens hate the dress because I love it.  At least on her.  Love the clutch too.

  • LaSylphide

Amazing how great a dress can look when it actually fits. Just wish she had a little more color in her lipstick. Otherwise, flawless.

    • MilaXX

She’s wearing a smokey eye with a fairly showing dress, I think just a hint of color on the lip was the right choice here.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

GORGEOUS! I’m so happy to see her in something that looks 100% completely and totally as amazing as she is.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

I don’t get the dress. Just. Don’t. Get it. To me it’s hideous.

  • ConnieBV

It’s a bit too 80s Dynasty wedding for my taste, but she’s lovely.

  • ChelseaNH

I’m not totally in love with the hair.  A little too lopsided for me.

  • TSkot

Really??  You guys are slipping.  She looks okay, but it’s a big yawn.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

She looks lovely, but someone needs to remind her that a smile is the best accessory. She looks like she’s frightened of something or someone!

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

If you had told me before I saw this post that it would be possible to wear a white gown with a three-tiered lace skirt and not look bridal, I would have laughed. Brava to Kerry for pulling it off.

  • suzq

This was not my favorite dress, but it looks great on her.  Tarentino should just make her his muse.  She’s having so much fun with fashion this season.  It would be wonderful to keep seeing her out there.

  • decormaven

That cocktail ring and metallic clutch- swoon. This is styled to perfection.

  • prettybigkitty

She’s gorgeous, no doubt about it.  But I’m not feeling it.   The Giles horse print dress she wore not too long ago. . . .now that was a WERQ for the ages.

  • http://twitter.com/elle_ife Elle Ife

I really feel like she would look amazing if she just gained like 6 pounds. Her face looks so pinched, it makes me feel hungry.

  • http://twitter.com/UberChicADee Diana Giese

AGREED! Perfection. She was my best dressed.

  • meowing

I dunno, guys:  it’ a WERQ from the waist up, but that trim on the skirt looks awfully Granny’s Lace Curtains to me.

  • mhleta

Nope. This undeniably screams “BRIDAL!” Get rid of the lace, the train and the brocade, replace the crystals with something stud-like and then I’ll reconsider.

  • http://www.facebook.com/henry.maler Henry Maler

I hated this when I first saw it but after looking at it for a while I have to admit she looks pretty fierce. Of course, she always looks fierce.

  • UglyTalents

I love this dress — totally takes it out of the “News Flash: Pretty Girl Looks Pretty” zone that starlets fall into so much.

  • Judy_J

Too bridal, especially with the ruffles and train in back.  Don’t get me wrong…it is a lovely dress, but it just looks like a bridal gown rather than a red carpet gown to me.

  • Nancy Karpen

Really tame for Rodarte and perfect on her.

  • MaryanneGirl

She is easily one of the most beautiful women in the world, but I just want her to SMILE! Just ONCE!

  • Mirakel9

The lace is just ugly, and incongruent with the modern feel of the top.

  • jorinde

woaa. I hate this with passion.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can’t be the only one that finds the hair a bit severe?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

    Bridal.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

Bridal. Looks like a page from modern bride.

  • tereliz

I love the dichotomy of the dress, keeps it looking like a Rodarte but the color keeps it simple. Love white on her. Kerry is one classy little lady. I’m emphasizing the little because she is so much shorter and slighter than many other actresses, yet still manages to get her clothes properly tailored. WERQ!

  • pookiesmom

    Oh, LOVE.

  • kolokOlchik

When I saw pictures of this last night I thought, if TLo don’t give this a WERQ, then I don’t know what’d earn one
    Perfection!

  • barbarienne

I understand what you guys are seeing, but when I look at that skirt, all I see are my mother’s fine lace-edged tablecloths.

  • Synnamin

For once I have to disagree with you boys. The top is shapeless and she has buttruffles. BUTTRUFFLES!! Feels like she needs a bracelet or something, too.

  • Super_Red

I’m really, really meh on this one. I hate the back of the dress, the bodice is interesting, but not amazing on her, and her hair makes her head look really weird in the pictures. I *want* to like it, but I’m just left feeling meh.

  • Louise Bryan

I think she looks stunning….from the eyes down.  Not thrilled about the hair.

  • Trisha26

Don’t like the lace at all. Not one bit. A plain white column skirt and then it’s a WERQ for me.

  • ballerinawithagun

I was so surprised that this was Rodarte! So controlled, such perfection…then I saw the tablecloth, whoops, I mean skirt…Kerry look fabulous though.

  • Zippypie

I don’t agree with this WERQ at all.  I saw this on the preshow and just threw up my hands.  The embellishments/sequin trim around the bodice looks cheap, the skirt looks like it came from a tablecloth or a communion dress, the makeup is too pale.  No snaps here, just a meh.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I love her. I love this from the waist up. I know Rodarte is edgy and I do love them for that and Kerry for trying it but I cannot abide that skirt. It looks like one of those little lacy things old ladies used to wear on their heads.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I’ve never seen a dress work so well on that razor line of bridal. Yep, she looks pretty perfect here and I would regret it, but I would still cut her and the guard for those earrings.

  • Anniebet

The dress is pretty fab. Her hair, at least from the front, less so. It’s too severe and lopsided to boot. Beautiful woman, gorgeous skin, can wear just about anything and be chic.

  • quiltrx

Sorry, this one is an ‘almost’ for me.  I just can’t with the cheap-looking lacy flurfs.  If they weren’t there, it’s perfection.

  • marigi

The lace looks cheap and flammable.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Wonderful!

  • shelley514

I love this combo of edgy and ethereal.  Well done!  Kerry W. pulls this off well.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OMG I just said out loud “Perfection.”   And then I scrolled down to see YOU said “Perfection.”  I love it.  She is cool and clean and mysterious and beautiful.  I love the whole damn thing.  Perfection.

  • Cheri Lee

Is it possible to be too striking? She is beautiful. So beautiful that I have a hard time looking at her.

  • guest2visits

At first I didn’t much like the dress; but that was due to the white glare of certain pics.  When the photo is right – and the detail
of the dress jumps out, it’s quite beautiful.

  • Rebecca Jay

I liked it until she turned around.

  • libraangel

Yes, but still like Marion the Queen better.

  • glennethph

That’s one way you do white without looking virginal or bridal.  Yes, I’m so looking at you, Taylor Swift.

  • PeaceBang

I don’t like this. Stiff bodice, unWERQworthy hair, hate the skirt.
