WERQ: Helen Mirren in Escada

Posted on January 07, 2013

We don’t always feel the need to explain our WERQs, but even so, we trust that the following pictures are explanation enough:

Helen Mirren attends the 24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in an Escada gown paired with a Tory Burch clutch, David Webb jewelry, and Stuart Weitzman shoes.

You WERQ that red gown, Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica!

If ONLY the seams on those sleeves weren’t twisted! She is just fantastic. I bow before her.

    • Karen Maslowski

That’s what happens when we move. You can’t just stand static in one place all night.

She is a force of nature.

  • Patricia Gillett

Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica has returned! All is right with the world!

  • LOVE her hair!!
This is perfect. She needs to stick with Escada.

  • OrigamiRose

    Just stunning.

  • Elaine Lang

  • schadenfreudelicious

We mere mortals are not worthy!

  • Violina23

Don’t cover your tummy, Queen Helen, I’m probably 40+ years younger and I WISH I had a stomach that tight! 🙂

  • KSpence

She looks like what I’d assume Galadriel’s mom would look like.

    •  OMG – she does and I never realized it! Now I want to see that movie!

  • Sobaika

    Shutting. It. DOWN.

  • newleaf1

    Better than the model.  Amazing.

  • The dress (and her body) is killa but I still think the necklace is a wee bit too much. It’d be better if she had worn an elegant one instead.

    • Sobaika

It looks like she was at a Cartier event, which would explain the front-and-center necklace.

    • I think that Women Of A Certain Age can pull that shit off; she has the presence and gravitas not to be overwhelmed by it. Me like.

      • formerlyAnon

And, to be blunt, Women Of A Certain Age only have a limited number of years left to expose so much of their upper chests. Even the genetically blessed, beautifully preserved and carefully maintained. Wearing imposing jewelry with a higher necked gown is certainly possible, but it adds another set of considerations and limitations. You go while you can, girl!

  • Pants_are_a_must

When she gets it, she REALLY REALLY gets it and everyone else gets to take a seat.

  • Vanja

I like a nice red dress and this one suits her, but I don’t like the visible seam in the netting and especially not when said seam is crooked.

  • Judy_J

I bow down to Her Fabulousness!

  • EEKstl

STUN-NING!  I mean, like STUN-ING!  Love the gown, love the color on her and love that necklace.  Perfection. QHOFF strikes again.

  • *happy sighs*

I hope I age half that well.

    • MoHub

I a wee bit younger, and I can assure you I have NOT aged that well!

  • Tamara Hogan

  • MoHub

The Queen is back. Everybody to his or her knees!

  • What mysterious alchemy has she done with her FACE? Why is she so lineless, but without the stretched-over-a-drum-frame tautness of plastic surgery or the Lohan-esque unnatural plumpness of fillers? If she’s doing something that doesn’t involve the medical profession, I want to know about it. Scratch that: I NEED to know about it!

    •  Cuz what ever work has been done, has been done expertly.

    • Lilithcat

I don’t think she’s had work done.  She is three years older than I am, and has more lines.  I have never done anything to my face other than to moisturize obsessively.  Oil of Olay.

      • formerlyAnon

She definitely had something done during the ’90s. She had noticeable under-eye bags which seemed, instead of getting worse like everyone else’s, to nearly disappear. (You can see it happen between seasons of that crime show she appeared in.)

What, if anything, else she might have had done I have no opinion on. It could be good genes and serious sun-protection. It’s not as if she’s weirdly taut and line-less. (These photos are flattering, at least in part because of makeup & over-lighting, but we’ve all seen her outdoor photos.)

    • filmcricket

She’s not at all lineless, though, and that’s why she looks so great. Her face moves. Every line around her eyes, her mouth, and on her forehead tells a tale. (In her case, I’m guessing it’s a tale of lots of love, laughter and great sex.) Scary surgery same-itude aside, one of the things that makes me angriest about botox etc is that it’s an act of erasure, pretending that the person’s life before this-moment-you’re-seeing doesn’t exist.

If Queen Helen had gone the surgery route, her face’d look terrible. She is not a classic beauty by any means, but she’s stunning because her vitality shines through.

    • vandeventer

Protect yourself from the sun and you too will age as well.  There are women in my family in their 80’s who are absolutely without wrinkles – even their hands are amazing; no wrinkles, no age spots, nothing.  It’s all because they never liked sun and always avoided it.

    • Sobaika

      Good genes and good health.

    • Fordzo

I will tell you exactly what her secret is: she never. had. kids.  I can point to each wrinkle on my face and tell you which of my children put it there and for what reason.

  • Introspective

loving when QFF royally shuts it down.

wishing i could call her up to “borrow” the necklace.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

  • MilaXX

I can do nothing but bow to the greatness. WERQ!

  • librarygrrl64

  • lexilexi

It is so refreshing to see a woman in her 60’s LOOK like a woman in her 60’s.  A natural beautiful interesting woman.

  • JOOLZ!    She’s got serious effing JOOLZ on.  lol

  • Lilithcat

Take the watch off, Helen.  Otherwise, a definite WERQ.

  • Beautiful (but that’s not my favourite hair for her).

    • I think the hair’s more severe in order to show off the necklace. It is a jeweler’s event, after all.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I hadn’t considered that, but you’re right-she’s definitely making that necklace front and center stage.

      •  Good point, well made.

    • ecallaw1977

I agree.  Love the dress, but I hate both the hair and the makeup.  I thought her look from the Hollywood Walk of Fame the other day was so much better!

  • WhiteOprah

So glad she stopped trying to make the Dolce and Gabbana thing happen.  This is totally working for her.

  • Call me Bee

Total WERQ from head to toe.  (Gee I really WANT that gown to wear to my next black-tie affair.  Heeee!)

  • butterflysunita

Between that red dress and the blue coat the other day, she is really selling Escada.  Beautiful.

  • R. L.

On the floor and on my face.  Fantastic.

  • Fordzo

I’m feeling conflicted about the necklace.  Is it made of lucite?  The major component in stripper heels?

    • Fordzo

Oh, nevermind.  Is it a Cartier necklace?  Does it cost more than my house? I may be able to overlook the stripper connection.

    • Kimbolina

It kind of looks like part of it is mother-of-pearl or something similar?

    • roadtrip1000

No need to feel out of sorts. The necklace is made of rock crystal, diamonds and platinum no less. (I googled it.) All is well in the world.

  • decormaven

That necklace is fabulous! Wish she’d gone for some silvery strappy sandals instead of the match-y red, but that is a minor quibble. Glorious, glorious- woman, you are a wonder.

    • Fordzo

I’m just relieved that they don’t appear to be “old lady shoes”.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

If Dame Helen ever shows up in old lady shoes the world will come to an end.

        • Fordzo

I don’t know.  The shoes she wore with the gold and black lace D&G dresses a few weeks ago (Nov. 20 and 27) were very nearly old lady shoes.  It could have had a lot to do with the combination of dark hose and open toes, though.

        • formerlyAnon

Ya know, if she gets to where she needs a “sensible” heel, that’s not enough for me to quit staring in awe.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

True-she can still shut it down.

  • BookJunkie315

Helen f*cking Mirren is in the house, bitches.

  • greyhoundgirl

Of course.  In the best, most fantastic way possible!

  • beebee10

  • ‘Nuff said.

  • DAYUM. Absolutely stunning.

  • Yes, a 67-year-old woman looks 900000% better in that dress than the fashion model. Seriously, that’s why “young” shouldn’t be the only criteria by which things like “Project Runway” are judged. FANTASTICA!

  • m0r0

  • bluefish

Beautiful!  Love her expressiveness — to say nothing of the total look.  It’s great to see a gorgeous woman that age looking so relaxed and warm.  So refreshing — and encouraging.  She looks stunning.  Such a fantastic smile.

  • Imasewsure

Wow I don’t really like it but I think it’s because of the background which makes it all too red and clashy? Not sure but I don’t love the gown as much as everyone else…. love her in those jewels though… love the hair and makeup so it’s still a WERQ for me

  • MarissaLG

  • Jecca2244

Gorge. divine. she’s be werking the Escada recently. lucky them!

  • Joyce VG

I have such a crush on her.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

How awesome would it be if Helen Mirren had a role on “Downton Abbey”?  Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren?  THAT IS A CAGE MATCH I WOULD PAY MONEY TO SEE.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

*Curtsies to the floor* Your Royal Fabulousness!

  • Jessica Goldstein

How will she outdo this for the Oscars? That’s the only problem with this look; it sets a standard that even Queen Helen may not be able to match or outdo.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Considering how absolutely wonderfully Escada is working for her, Dame Helen and Escada should be having some serious confabs about her Oscar look.

  • You werq that insanely awesome necklace too, girl!

  • Snailstsichr

I’m so impressed that she doesn’t fall out of her bodice when she leans over and blows a kiss. So many lesser mortals do.

    • formerlyAnon

Lesser mortals who do not apply their good sense (or the good sense of whoever styles them) to the fit of their dress and the deployment of proper underpinnings.  It’s frustrating because that’s one which takes no arcane skills, except for the most outrageously generously endowed. Just sense and the willingness to consult the right “support” staff. (entertaining myself I am. Just pity me and pass on.)

  • Nailed it!

  • julnyes

Love it. She is bringing it like we know she can!

  • DinahR

  • Monday1900

Has she had work (very well done, subtle work) done lately?  Between this and the star on Hollywood Blvd pictures I really wonder.  I like this dress but the color isn’t my favorite.  She looks great but I think she’s looked better.

  • unbornfawn

Nice to see her out of her slump. Looking good.

  • The entire look is exquisite, but I kind of want to go off with their heads on the minions who let her hem drag in the dirt.  Doesn’t our Queen deserve better?

  • mozzer0906

    All Hail Queen of Fuckingfantastica!

  • She and Anderson Cooper should have a Silver-Off.

  • I worship of the altar of Queen Helen!

  • e jerry powell

She’s on an Escada bender lately, isn’t she?

The neckline works well for the necklace.  I”m not so sold on what it’s doing to her breasts.  Other than that, excellent.

  • quiltrx

Perfect dress, and perfect to showcase that gorgeous necklace!  Bow down, mortals!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

You WERQ that red gown, Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica!
Bow down, all.  The Queen is in the house.  Seriously, this woman is at the top of my person love list.  And younger ladystars, please take note of how Dame Helen dresses for the RC and file it away under “How to dress age appropriately and still WERQ IT.

  • jeeplibby02

I don’t like the current overuse of the word “awesome,” but that woman is fucking AWESOME!  I wonder if she has any idea…

  • guest2visits

Cartier could take a tip from David Webb Jewels next time  – considering how beautifully Helen carrys the necklace.

  • StellaZafella

Being In Total Control of Herself – B I T C H in the verrrry best sense of the word. This is our Helen.

  • Trisha26

  • Show us your shoes, you marvelous woman!

  • melanie0866

She’s a WERQ every time she leaves the house.

  • Zippypie

I fucking bow.  Down to the ground.

  • formerlyAnon

If ONLY she hadn’t had to stand against a reddish background.

I very much like that she’s pulling off that simple (and not obviously augmented) hair. Also, impressed.

  • margaret meyers

I was al set to not like her hair in the close-up… and then I had to say that it looked alright, even in close up.  She owns it.

  • SugarSnap108

She makes me feel like an inferior life form.

  • deltabronze

And isn’t it great that she did not feel compelled to stick her leg out to the side to show that the dress has a slit?

  • You know, I don’t love the color or the waist details but really, she is glorious regardless. There is none other. I pelt her with flowers and bow with my nose to the floor.

  • I can hear Shirley Bassey singing “diamonds are forever”!

  • xmixiex

she is fucking chic to the core.

  • Bitch has decolletage for DAYS. Snaps UP.

  • ccm800

she always looks like the cat that ate the canary.
