Vaness Hudgens in Jenny Packham

Posted on January 14, 2013

We love a gal who loves to get her disco-fabulous on.

Vanessa Hudgens attends the 14th Annual Warner Bros. And InStyle Golden Globe Awards After Party in a Jenny Packham gown paired with a Daniel Swarovski clutch.

Jenny Packham Fall 2012 Collection

We also love a gal who knows what month it is and dresses appropriately, even if she is likely to catch a chest cold before the night is out.

This is all a bit much, but we tend to think that was the point. She wanted something fierce and showy, and by God, she nailed it. Besides, we’re suckers for a good pewter metallic. So much more interesting to us than basic silver. Similarly, we tend to like brassy golds, like the one in the accents. This could, of course all change a year from now, when we’ll declare brass and pewter OVUH.

On the other hand, those earrings are terribly wrong. Not because they’re big and showy, but because she’s got so much going on at the shoulder that they’re fighting with the top of the dress. We have a feeling those things got caught in the sequins all night long.

Great dress, but the fit is so bad.

      • kimmeister

Especially around the underarms when she puts her hand on her hip!

        • margaret meyers

She has had to fold back the sleeves, and you can see that the shoulders are falling off and pulling the v neck open … and the v neck goes half way to her waist.  It looks like she just borrowed a garment and didn’t do any fitting.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Um, Girl?  If the sleeves on your dress are too long, turn the excess UNDER.  Those close ups of your hands are killing me.

      • StellaZafella

Yes baby, com’ere and take that off…Stellamama will show you how to wear a dress like that!

      • Fyolette

yes, this sloppiness killed the whole look for me

      • Cathy S

Yes! I had to go back and look at that twice to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. That’s awful.

    • Emily Giovanni

On closer shots you can tell it’s all sequins, but I couldn’t get past my first impressions that she was covered in oil.

      • ccinnc

Sorry, you beat me to it! I didn’t read the comments before posting.

      • Don Hackett

YES.  my first thought was oil sludge.  yuck.

I have a feeling half of those sequins were gone by the end of the night anyway.

I just. Blue steeling makes me siiiiigh.

    • Jane Donuts

Wow, she really did go for it, huh? Agree about the earrings, but I also think they are what is really telling about how she wants to be perceived here, and clearly she is going for disco fabulous, over the top, urban swagger. The look would still be out there but much more restrained without them.

    • marlie

LOVE the dress. The earrings are definitely too much. It’s a slosh too much under/side boob, but I guess she’d better flaunt it while she has it.

    • jw_ny

Those earrings really are too much with this look, and I dislike the bag…looks cheap and dated.  I do, however, love the disco fab dress, messy hair, and makeup.  If the dress fit properly, it’d be killah!

      • Don Hackett

i love the clutch, but then i may be cheap and dated too.

The jewelry needed to be toned down and the hair could be more…well, less doing-chores-on-Saturday bun, at least.  But I think the dress works for her.  Needed some tailoring, though.

    • schadenfreudelicious

      the talons….i just cant..

    • Zippypie

It just looks so big on her.  I don’t understand why these stars don’t have at least a quick fitting to handle things like skirt hems and sleeve hems before an event.  You can tell that the dress is too big under the arms from the batwing of fabric under there when she has her hand on her hip.  In theory, I like the dress and it could have been damn chic if she had just had it fitted to her body.

And ditched the tacky accessories.  The earrings.  That ring.  The matchy-matchy clutch.  God knows what the shoes looked like.

      • kimmeister

Batwing, that is the perfect name for that phenomenon!

    • Sobaika

Oooo I love this! The hair is a bit mess, I agree about the earrings, and shuddered at her nails. BUT she still looks fab.

      • MilaXX

Did you see Kelly O’s nails at the Golden Globes? Hers I really hated

    • decormaven

That’s a pretty busy nail design, but a very interesting ring and bangle. For Pete’s sake, if you’re going to wear a dress with embellished shoulders, let them show. Don’t let a busy pair of earrings detract from that focus.

    • ccinnc

I am sorry. She looks like an oil slick.

    • Snailstsichr

Girl can rock the makeup. Also, with this much going on, the dress and accessories could have been wearing her, but she owned the look. Gotta admire her confidence.

    • MGMcD

The too-long sleeves and the extra bulk at the shoulders make it look like she’s playing dress up in her mommy’s dress. The gown is fabulous, but Vanessa is a teeny thing, this needed someone tall and fierce to rock it properly.

    • Violina23

I feel like someone pasted her face on someone else’s body.  Like her head is super happy and perky, but her body is giving bitchy-fierceness. 😛

    • Depot'er

I thought after the last batch of ‘V’ movies they had given up on the whole reptile thing….ohhhh, wait…..this is an actual OUTFIT?
makes her look fat (I assumed she was carrying a brood for the next snakey monsters?)

    • E. D.

Looks like algae growing on a seal.  I hate this.

    • amanda lynn

Love it – well done, lil’ gal.  Your stylist is growing up!  (hate the nails, though)

    • Elana Bryan

Holy shit – she actually flipped the sleeves up?  Dear God take that dress off and give it to me and my 5’11” bod.  Oh wait, it would be too short for me all around…give it to someone about 5’6″ then.  I would love this dress on the right person – it’s very striking.

    • snarkykitten

now those are some pinterest nails

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I think she looks fabulous and I think SHE thinks she looks fabulous — minor quibble…I think the clutch is too big

    • peachy

      seriously, have those sleeves altered.

    • Adrianna Grężak

You guys like this and criticized Jennifer Lawrence for wearing something very similar?

      • Tom and Lorenzo

You mean we thought a dress on a tall, statuesque blonde looked different than a similar dress on a short, curvy dark girl? Shocking.

        • Adrianna Grężak

Jeez, no need for the bitchy sarcasm

          • CurbGirl

You are joking, right? This is the PERFECT place for sarcasm, bitchy or otherwise.

          • Tom and Lorenzo

Of course there’s a need for it.

          • amywinns

You must be VERY new here.

    • MilaXX

This is the best she has looked in a long time. I am willing to overlook the earrings. Besides, I have to admit, I have a thing for big, gaudy earrings.

    • In_Stitches

This is crazy similar to a dress on Solange you featured a few months back.  Looks much better on Hudgers.

    • librarygrrl64

Too mature, bad fit, horrible nails.

    • Trisha26

If I see one more exposed boob…so over the display.

    • Imasewsure

Love this (although I hate that type of plunge) but it does look a bit big. Also I love the earrings on her even if they are fighting with the dress…she looks like the coolest harbor seal at the ball

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Way to channel your inner Diana Ross, Vanessa!

    • Jecca2244

i always feel like she never knows how to accessorize. those earrings wouldn’t go with anything. meep.

    • Tanya Wade

Studio 54 coke spoon realness. And I, too, love a brassy gold, and will never declare it “ovuh!”

    • Barbara Affolter

I’m going to go the Fug Girls route here (as I do in the rest of my life) and advise Vanessa to listen to Tyra’s advice on posing for photos, as per necks.  She looks like she has no neck because she’s jutting her chin too far out, and this is definitely a dress that requires perfect posture, especially when it’s being worn by such a diminutive girl.  She looks fabulous, but perfect posture, going for a less pointy (i.e. terrifying) nail, a little restraint with the earrings, and getting the skirt and sleeves hemmed would have made this a WERQ.  As it is, she looks beautiful and is bringing the sass, and I’m not quite bowing down, but I might be dropping a slight curtsy.

    • Molly Lopez

Terrible fit i can see inside her dress

    • spooki C

The dress is fierce but the “just rolled out of bed” hair is killing me. LOVE the runway shot.

    • kschwarting

I don’t know about this one, guys.  She’s teeny and the dress looks like it’s wearing her.

I’m also ready for the Pinterest nails trend to die.

    • Janet B

I really like this on Vanessa. Colors and a style she can wear well, too bad it doesn’t fit as well as it should.

    • 3boysful

This doesn’t fit, which adds to the appearance that she ripped it off from Dame Helen’s or Glen Close’s closets.  Hate the earrings–what was a cool dress now looks Hoochie-Mama in Vegas.

    • VicksieDo

Can I just say that I loathe pointy fingernails?

    • Stubenville

It looks like hot tar, but I mostly like it. The earrings are a disaster.

    • Pamela

She looks like Sgt. Pepper’s disco eel.

    • Stubenville

Oh look! A head donut on the model. Did Anthony Ryan style her?

    • kategs

      And I loathe the nails!

    • Sara__B

She is SO pretty. One of these days, she’s going to nail it. It’s a great gown for her — if it fit her properly — but the jewelry and nails are all wrong, and I’m betting her shoes are, too.

    • Heather

      Eight inches too long…

    • hmatz

I know this is a tiny quibble, but I just can’t deal with the pointy witch nails on our lady stars anymore.

On the whole, though, this Alexis Carrington in 2013 look is fantastic.

    • wawawah

ANYA fro PR Season 9 called…she wants her earrings back! WAH!

    • ankali

Disagree about the earrings being too much, though I will concede they’re too long (TLo’s probably right about their getting caught in the shoulder sequins all night). I think they’re actually the accessory that pulls the dress into “disco” rather than old Hollywood glamor like on the model.

Of course, if she wasn’t going for disco…

    • Nikki

She’s got the bewbs for it, but ewww no… maybe if Uma was wearing this?

    • Andy Morris

Spent around 4 mins trying to figure out what OVUH was an acronym for. Somebody get me a coffee plz.

    • RzYoung

This is so fab, I want it.

    • Big Bear

It’s so sweet when they play dress up in mummy’s clothes.

    • Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

Absolutely LOVE the nails!  I wish I knew who did them!

    • Nancy Skaggs

      NO. MORE. STERNUMS. Good Lord.

    • 3boysful

You know, this makes me think about those occasions when the stars align and you find a fab designer dress that you j’adore on sale for nothing, but it doesn’t quite fit . . . or the color or cut doesn’t suit you at all . . . yet you have to buy it because it’s so beautiful and such a bargain.  Stars must have a similar dilemna, but their dresses are really cheap because they’re FREE!

      • meowing

Made me recall a pair of fabulous gray suede 4″ heels, on sale, less than 1/3 the original price (I was poor and style-hungry at the time).  Bought ’em, regardless that they were at least a size too small.  Maybe that’s why I have such horrible feet problems now.  Beware, young ‘uns.

    • thecitysleeps

I hate this.  But I’m not one for disco fabulous.

    • Annabelle Archer

      Bless her heart.
I want to love this, and when I squint and ignore the little details that keep it from perfection, I totally do.
Clearly shorty fell in love with the dress and didn’t have the time to have it customized to her petite frame.  There’s something so very chick in her 20s about that, it’s kind of endearing actually.

    • foodycatAlicia

Since she’s clearly about 3′ tall, she’s obviously had the dress hemmed, so why on earth didn’t she have the sleeves shortened at the same time? Don’t like the nail art, don’t like the earrings, do love the way she’s werqing it.

    • MoHub

I just can’t with the interior boob curve. Bothers me even more than exterior side boob.

    • Cecilia Evans

Solange would SHUT.IT.DOWN. in this dress.

    • neofashionista

from watching Revenge alone I think big earrings are making a come back but I agree this is a lil too much

    • mhleta

The earrings are wrong, but I hope we get to see them again with something else, because I love them. There is an awful lot of boob information available fromt he side. What happens when she sits down or slouches a little? Or do they just glue everything down? Whatever. She’s awful cute and is working the ‘tude to the nth degree. I’m IN for the ride on this one.

    • shelley514

This dress seems too mature for her.  She doesn’t have the confidence or attitude necessary to pull this look off at all.  She looks like a little girl who thinks she’s grown.

    • alyce1213

I think she makes this potentially tacky and cheap-looking dress look tacky and cheap-looking.  She has nothing going to elevate the dress.  I can’t believe the sleeves are turned up.

    • Ashleigh Boutelle

Not sure how this is such a bad fit, etc, but I am DIGGING those nails!!!!

    • Danielle West

Why are her sleeves rolled up?

    • warnerave

i think she looks fierce..i guess all the negative comment stems from her being vanessa hudgens :)

    • guest2visits

The earrings need to be so much better and the dress looks abit big for her like most everything she wears.
Vanessa seems to like heavy, overly styled looks like this.  I get the impression she is trying to emulate a certain genre with this outfit.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I expect her to start singing “I Will Survive” in that dress.
