Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta at SAG Awards

Posted on January 28, 2013

This is straight-up gorgeous:

Tina Fey attends the SAG Awards 2013 in an Oscar de la Renta gown.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

She has REALLY come into her own when it comes to fashion. And by “come into her own” we of course mean “hired a better stylist.” But it’s so much more fun to cast these smart business decisions that stars make as meaningful life decisions in order to tell a story, don’t you find?

Anyway, she – or someone in her employ – is really nailing it on the red carpet and public appearance looks. She looked fabulous at the Golden Globes and she looks fabulous here. She – or someone in her employ – figured out that if you keep the looks very simple with a hint of retro to them, she shines. Love the hair, love the dress, LOVE the belt. The only reason we’re not shouting “WERQ!” is because the bust sits way too low on her. Tina Fey’s not the “nipple-cover dress” type, so it’s a bit jarring. We just want to hoik the whole thing up. We imagine she did too.

The fit in the bodice is, as you say, not good. A shame because she is looking stunning.

      • A. W.

Unfortunately, the dress makes her chest look really… deflated. It’s as if the dress slipped down 2 inches, but she didn’t want to re-adjust.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I agree on all counts.  Tell you what, you guys get on one side, I’ll get on the other, and we’ll hoik it up together for her.

Of course, it will doubtless be the case that all 4 of us will start laughing about the absurdity of it so much, we’ll end up in a rumpled pile on the floor.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I would buy a ticket for that 3 minutes of hilarity.

      • Kristin McNamara

I was about to post “Oh but you KNOW Tina would be cracking up right along with you!” And then I re-counted… and realized your “4 of us” already took that into consideration haha :)

      • Allison Woods

Kilt, you should let me help you–a burly female stagehand (moi) will set the whole hoik straight, so to speak.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I think that the more people we add to this trifling task, the more like a scene from a Marx Brothers comedy we get. Which is all to the good.

      • MaryanneGirl

Luckily, most women have the ability to handle pulling up their own gown without the assistance of three gentlemen. ;)

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Quite true, but not nearly of the comedic potential.

          • MaryanneGirl

            Hahaha oh, agreed!

    • ChiliP

WERQ IT TINA! She looks gorgeous. I died at the knowing Amy Poehler since she was pregnant with Lena Dunham joke.

Side note- is it weird that I find it oddly refreshing to see a celebrity with a normal looking wedding ring (I realize this is the band, but still). Most of these celebs look like they’re sporting mini-asteroids on their fingers. A giant diamond does not a beautiful ring make, imo.

      • shirab

Yes yes yes re: the wedding ring! I noticed the same thing (and also I like that she doesn’t have an attention-seeking manicure). Shelly O is in the normal-ring camp as well–she always wears what is clearly her original, pre-riches solitaire engagement ring and plain band. So refreshing and endearing.

      • tereliz

LOL, that ring was the first thing I noticed. How much it looked like mine!

Makes it much easier to do the dishes and all the other little things that keep my life elegant.

        • ClevelandburbsBeth

Yes, we must keep it elegant and real. Really elegant. LOL’d at your post.

      • semirose

I died at the Lena Dunham line! When is that girl going to go away?

      • kimmeister

I found it refreshing too that she didn’t “upgrade” when she hit fame and fortune.  Good on her.

      • Elaine Rodriguez

Has she worn that same ring at other awards shows? I only ask because I used to work for a jewelry store in New York that sometimes supplied jewelry to celebs for red carpet events-yes, even wedding bands. That may be a borrowed ring. Still, that caught my eye too.  I love that she’s not ostentatious.

      • withbreaththatisbaited

She typically wears a plain gold band, so I don’t think this is her wedding ring, but a beautiful stand-in!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

The best part of this is that it’s elegant and glamorous, but it doesn’t look un-Tina Fey.  She (or someone else) has figured out that you can take her low-key personal style and channel it to the red carpet without making it look like she’s a fish out of water or wearing a dress that should be on someone like Blake Lively (or Laura Bush).

    • imperfectlaura

The belt and hair really make the look for me. They take a basic black dress to retro fabulousness.

    • Janet B

I wish she wouldn’t default to black, but otherwise I thought she looked pretty last night.

      (I’m sick of strapless)

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

A better fitting bodice + bigger earrings or a necklace, and I’d be giving this a WERQ.

    • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

I’ve been wondering how to spell hoik…

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Concur with TLo!  I have always wanted to see how someone would write about the phenomenon of the sinking bodice and what to do about it.  “Hoik it up” is EXACTLY the way to describe it.  The Need for Hoik distracts from the rest of this wonderful look.  Her hair is drop dead amazing.  I want to lift it off of her head and put it onto my own.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes – the too low is too much.  It’s drawing all the focus for me.  The dress looks like it was made to sit pretty low – on a chest with little boobage.  So, the idea is good, but this was actually the wrong dress.

      • kimmeister

We need a new superhero, The Incredible Hoik, to go around red carpet events, fixing near-nip-slips!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Agree!! Beside the bust sitting too low, I felt that she needed a necklace (not a huge piece, but at least something to break all the empty space between her cleavage and her neck).

Other than that, she looks amazing. I would have never guessed she has such an amazingly fit body.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QP4RBTAZX6QTHZZSJ2YT7DGO7Q Brittany

Totally agree on the bodice! A few other stars had that same droopy-bust effect going on at the GG’s and it’s just super unflattering. Still, hair & makeup are gorgeous – she’s actually channeling Winona a bit here.

    • Mar8

LOVE the belt!!! She looks gorgeous!! I find my self refreshing this site every minute to see if there are more posts from last night. Am I a crazy person?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

No, you are a FABULOUS person.

        • Mar8

Ok I’m so blushing right now

      • OrigamiRose

Omg, if you are crazy, I am too.  As soon as I saw a clean-shaven Bradley Cooper last night, I was hopping mad for Monday morning’s TLo updates.  My neighbors must have thought I was nuts hearing the shrieks of excitement.

        • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

I know – did he pop out for milk and miss a ‘Studio Line’ delivery?

          • OrigamiRose

HA!  His hair was also seemingly free of product.  It was almost like he’s been reading the comments here :)

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Me too!  I’ve been up since my doorbell rang at 7 freakin’ o’clock this morning (damn FedEx!) and have been checking every 15 minutes since.  Am I an addict?  Likely.  Do I want to enter a 12-step program?  NO WAY!

        • Mar8

I think it’s the healthiest addiction in the world :)

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I find this dress excessively dull, and it sits much too low on her boobs.  Her hair looks nice, and her accessories are very pretty, but they are simply not enough to keep this dress from being bo-o-o-oring.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      Girl looks fabulous.

    • GorgeousThings

Dress needed a waist stay. That would have solved the problem. Other than that, she looks fabulous.

      • julnyes

I had to look up what a waist stay actually is and now I wish I had known about them years ago for prom and countless weddings.

      • Karen Maslowski

You are so right. We should send copies of Claire Shaeffer’s books to every stylist in Hollywood.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Agree about the hoiking but she looks so fabulous in the dress and the belt, etc. Makes me proud to be an Upper Darby girl.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Thank Jesus, Mary and Holy Saint Joseph that Tina stopped wearing her glasses on the red carpet.

    • Mary229

She looks absolutely fantastic.  Has never looked better.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

i STILL WAITING FOR YOU TO HURRY UP!!! please… :)

    • decormaven

Gorgeous belt, and love that clutch. You fellas help that gal out with a hoik. Tina, this is soooo close to a WERQ.

      • Sobaika

That clutch! And that belt. I’m sort of ‘meh’ on the overall look (even if it’s the best she’s ever looked) but those are some damn good accessories.

    • Lisa Sangermano

I just want to be her
      Or to be her daughter
      Still waiting

    • xmixiex

gorgeous!  but I have no idea how someone could leave the house, let along be in front of thousands of cameras for hours, with the ladies ready to pop out with one false move.

    • appliquer

Agreed! My first thoughts when I saw the photo were “gorgeous” and “pull up the dress”.

    • afabulous50

She is about 1/8″ away from a wardrobe malfunction.  I know I’m in the minority big time – but I was never a fan of strapless gowns or dresses.  To me, they’re an accident waiting to happen.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Not if they are made properly and fitted correctly. A good strapless dress is a beautiful thing – most of them, sadly, are not.

    • MissFern

wonky boobs.  i can’t stop staring.

    • jw_ny

I so agree…the bust is way too low, not only for Tina, but really for anyone.  Sneeze, cough, someone steps on her train, etc…It’s a nip slip waiting to happen.

    • Nancy Dunn

The boobage ruins the dress for me. Yes, lovely, but that is all I see, the potential boob slippage. Yeech.

    • SewingSiren

      Too low. Way too low.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

If she would just yank up her top a bit. And you can tell she FEELS pretty. So love her.

    • f_yeah_marie

I really love her makeup at the red carpet events.  It’s very natural, yet you can tell she has some on.  I covet those bracelets (and her friendship with Amy Poehler).

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

Hope you’ll share the bracelets with me.  Otherwise, bitch fight!

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

It does not make her breasts SING.

It makes her breasts sad, and mine are sad for them. :(
That green dress she wore when they opened the Globes.. that was my favourite look so far of hers. I think – despite the fact that this looks okay – this is a step backwards purely because of the poor fit in the bodice. Love the belt though. She should get that green sparkly dress made in 1600 colors, and various types of sparkliness and plainness, and stick with that silhouette forever.

    • Pennymac

HOIK! (I can’t focus on the fab, cause all I can think of is ) HOIK!

    • ballerinawithagun

Until I read further I thought you had lost your minds…All that I can see is the ill fitting bodice.

    • kschwarting

I’ll echo everyone else’s comments on the bodice of the dress, but I’m also not sold on all the ruffles.  The Globes dress worked because of its color and simplicity, and this one just has a little too much going on for Miss Tina.  The hair and makeup are great, though, and I’m happy to see her looking as gorgeous as she should.

    • formerlyAnon

      Agree. The sliding-down-and-droopifying-effect bugs.

Too bad, since I think this is definitely a top 5 hair day, ever.

    • mmc2315

“… We just want to hoik the whole thing up….”

      My thoughts exactly!

    • bluefish

Definitely the hair and make-up for her and a pretty dress.  Unfortunately, the fit around the bust is terrible.

    • bertkeeter

Agree…that dress is not doing her boobs any great favor!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

She looks lovely, except for the low-rider bodice. I really am so tired of strapless gowns, though.

    • Warrior89

agreed – lift the ladies and she is amazing.  well…she’s amazing anyway, but you know…

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

she looked gorgeous. i loved the hair on her! agree about the bodice fit though.

    • jilly_d

I love this woman, and it makes me so happy when I see her looking fabulous.  God what a great head of hair.

    • Alyssa

Totally agree. If it was yanked up just a smidge, it would be perfect. Love the hairstyle and belt especially!

    • unbornfawn

She’s really been bringing it lately. She looks lovely.

    • ojosazules

It is a little hard to not notice that her breast are working overtime and failing. Otherwise, beautiful.

    • marilyn

Gals with small boobs should not go for this kind of neckline.  It emphasizes that they have small boobs, andalso that the top of her dress might be falling off.  I don’t care for the hair and makeup.  She was wearing a bold dress, and needed more formalhair, with bolder makeup to go with it.  All you see is (no)boobs, and everything else fades into the background.

    • withbreaththatisbaited

I didn’t think it was too, too low until I saw video of her in the press room when it had ridden down even lower and I was really concerned for a moment (where, btw she mentioned the name of her stylist and said she’s been working with her for years, so maybe she learned some good lessons). Otherwise, she looked great. The hair is perfect and I love the ruffles! Feminine and they added a little something to the otherwise basic dress.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      ‘Hoik’. Bahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahhaha!

    • greyhoundgirl

      LOVE the hair.

    • mhleta

Yes, hoiking is definitely in order. She is indeed looking superb, though. Loved her on the cover of RS, too. She’s working the hell out of that whole 40s bombshell thing, without being too literal.

    • Zippypie

Tina has been looking fantastic this year on the carpet!  Just gorgeous.  Hair, ruffles, fit, accessories, makeup.  She’s got the whole package going.  You rock it, gf!

    • MilaXX

She looks great. I loved how perfect her hair/makeup was last night, and that belt was just the right amount of bling for her. As i watched last night, I was wondering how some of the looks would translate into stills. I agree the bust is sitting too low looking at this picture, but i didn’t see it last night.

    • Cousin_Rose

Any dress that makes you think more about whether it is going to fall down than about the beauty of the wearer is a big fat OUT. I do agree that she looks lovely but…

    • SublimatedRage

……always wondered how you spelled “hoik”……  Rubes like me always called it “hike”……

    • shayna61

It looks like a bunch of handkerchiefs sewn together and hanging way too low on her breasts. Sorry, me no likie.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

      Oh, the BOOBS.
You know she had to hate it, but she’s doing a decent job of faking it. Unlike, say, Jessica Lange.

    • DeTrop

I don’t think so.  It makes me crazy when these women get over confident.  The girls are too exposed. No from me.

      • pookiesmom

“It makes me crazy when these women get over confident.” Yeah, how dare these uppity women develop a sense of how fabulous they are! I like it so much better when they’re quiet, meek little fashion lemmings.

(That probably wasn’t what you meant by your comment, but I couldn’t resist.)

        • DeTrop

Tina Fey is fabulous.  It’s just too bad that her girls weren’t more ‘uppity’ :).  Seriously, that neckline does not flatter her figure and I guess I’m just getting bored with those strapless gowns.

          • pookiesmom

I’m getting into 30 Rock for the first time and holy festival of monkey balls is she awesome! But yeah, I agree that this bustline is not the greatest thing.

    • warnerave

WERQ for me..she looks miles better than Kerri Washington

    • e jerry powell

I’m not 100% overwhelmed by this look.  Gown is well above average, but yeah, fit issues.  That’s not my main problem, though.

I can’t quite put my finger on what’s wrong, but it’s something above the neck.  Perhaps the proportions are off because of the top fit.  Just looks like a lot of real estate is making her hair look too short.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/XPWSQ2BDU5XJIA23AMYVBRWZBA Eric

I agree- if it wasn’t a little boobish this would be flawless.

    • ChelseaNH

I do wish she’d venture away from black, though.

    • suzq

“Hoiking” won’t help.  Her torso is longer than the model’s and about an inch and a half–two inches too long for the bodice of the dress.  I have a wonderful dress that looked the same way on me.  I thought it was my undergarments.  Turned out that the torso is too short.   Someone give her stylist a tape measure and explain how to use it!

    • UglyTalents

Gosh, all I could see was the boobage problem … they looked so squished and uncomfortable — as belied by her facial expression. The poor dear.

    • Judy_J

Yep, my only complaint is that the gown is sitting too low on her bustline.  I imagine she was supremely uncomfortable; I know I would have been.

    • MaryanneGirl

I must admit that I gasped when I saw her last night. She looks amazing, and that belt is to die! I agree with you it sits a little low, but the hair/makeup/everything makes this a personal best. She looks fabulous!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She really turned it out.  I wanna borrow her hair and makeup people for a minute.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Ha!  I knew why you weren’t giving her a WERQ.  It looks like the dress is just smidge big, and is heavy enough to be pulling down.  And she looks like she is trying to hoik it up.  That last picture looks like, “Please stop taking pictures, I need to get the ladies room and pull this keysmashing dress up!”

    • ZnSD

saggy girls, distracting belt and a yawn of a dress.

    • Louise Bryan

I’m so glad she’s not wearing a bib.  I think she looks fabulous.  I love that her hair brings to mind post-war pictures of my mom about the time she and Dad got married.

    • Trisha26

I think the bodice is just a little too small in addition to being droopy – otherwise I think she looks elegant, love her hair and makeup.

    • spice09

I think she looked great, and I actually like the low bustline. Her style improvement seems to be due to both a better stylist and greater self-confidence on her part. She had gone through a phase where she was wearing nice-but-safe dresses, so it’s nice to see her take more risks (even if they aren’t perfect).

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Tina BROUGHT it!  Minor quibble:  that dress looks like it has gills.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Can we give her stylists an anonymous prize of some sort. They definitely get Stylists of the Year.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/XOKQHEUXULPSTIWKTOCIPKX4AI Emma

Could have been gorgeous. But it sits to low on her and the skirt looks at if it has gills.

    • http://phreddd.livejournal.com/ Fred V

Someone could’ve worked out the underpinnings a LITTLE better – this is a mom of two we’re talking about.

Beyond that, she MADE ME LOOK. WIN!!

    • http://twitter.com/mk_patter Megano!

I really want her to be in like, a slapsticky type comedy set in the ’30s now.

    • lrhoff

Not very friendly to the girls…..it was dragging them down.  Not attractive.

    • quiltrx

LOVE the hair…I’m all about the noir glamour, and this look has it in spades.  She just needs a negligee and some marabou mules to complete the femme fatale look.

    • ccm800

yeah them boobs they are a scaring!!!!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13805908 Kelly Sowers

Love the hair. Think she looked better in the Vivienne Westwood.
