Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace

Posted on January 31, 2013

Selena got herself a Nylon Mag cover and we all know what that means: a party in her honor and a really showy Versace dress. In this instance it’s the most Frankendress-y dress we’ve ever seen. A Frankendress to out-Frankendress all other Frankendresses.

Selena Gomez celebrates her Nylon magazine February 2013 cover in Los Angeles in an Atelier Versace dress accessorized with Nicholas Kirkwood heels and Melinda Maria earrings.

Atelier Versace Fall 2012 Couture Collection

It’s ALIVE, I tell you…ALIVE!!!!!!

Cue the villagers with torches and pitchforks.

This strikes us a for-models-only dress because once you take it away from the runway and off the back of a professional dress-wearer, it all just goes awkward. Like, really awkward.

Oh, hell. Let’s not dance around it: That dress? Pure ugly.

Frankendress has the actual frankenstitching. A full on win for the Frankendress today.

    • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

I think it would have helped if her hair was pulled back a bit.  Helped a bit, but not much.  FUGLY dress

      • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

So we could see the bolts on either side of her franken-neck?

      • Jennifer Coleman

Actually, it’s a war between the Frankendress and the Cocker Spaniel hair. I think the hair has a slight edge in the fight. And why did she have to ruin a perfectly good purse by autographing it? I mean, the market is not Tweeners but adults, right?

        • FancyPhilly

I feel like this has tipped from Cocker Spaniel hair to Newfoundland hair. It looks like her head of hair must weigh 30 pounds.

          • Carly Warnock

At least! Her hair and head are HUGE compared to her body. Very bobble head. The dress is a horror.

            • Kristin McNamara

I was gonna say that too… she’s so tiny, her hair length is almost half her height!

        • holdstillnow

Her hair is starting to look like a case of Graft vs. Host. It’s getting bigger and stronger while sucking away her life force.

          • Kristin McNamara

Hey, at least she doesn’t have TBA.
            (Please, somebody, get that joke…..)

      • melanie0866

I was thinking that it was a good thing that her hair was covering up so much of the dress.

    • Sobaika

Imma let you finish TLo, but the truest of all Frankendresses was the Lanvin worn by Julianne Moore.

      • BrooklynBomber

I do think of that one as the ne plus ultra in Frankendresses.

      • LuisaNL

that really was the frankendress to end all frankendresses.

      • demidaemon

I think it was the Pilotto dress worn by Kerry Washington.

    • thesixthbeatle

Hideous. It looks as if some nutter ripped up a green dress and a white dress and stitched them together while cackling manically.

      • mhleta

It really does look like the work of a serial killer.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I want whatever they were ingesting when they came up with that dress…it had to be gooooooddddd.

    • Martha Anderson

The wrong part of this dress is the belly belt

Without it, I think it is a fun, interesting dress for a young person.

      • Tatiana Luján

I don’t think the dress would be good without the belt, but it would certainly improve.

      • S_Quizzle

I was thinking the same thing. With the belt it becomes too much, especially since she seems petite.

      • http://twitter.com/nova1000 sarah

I agree. I like the basic shape of the dress on her wee little frame, but the pro-wrestler belt is ugly.

    • clatie

I give her a little credit for making the best of a terrible dress.  Under the hideousness of the garment, she actually looks fresh and cute.  It doesn’t look good, but it’s not mutilating her.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Dr. Whale did better stitching on his brother.

      • l_c_ann

Or it’s an homage to the more coarsely sewn Dr. Frankensteins……..thus Frankendress awards of the worst kind.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It doesn’t help that she’s such a wee tiny thing, and her hair is styled overly huge for her face and frame. But that dress?  No Words Can Suffice.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Help me, kittens.  Why is the clutch signed?  Is that her signiture?

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Um, Yep, that’s her signature.  How much you wanna bet that clutch gets auctioned off at some charity event for bazillions of dollars?

        • HomeOfficeGirl

Ah, could be.  Tho, who is buying a Selena Gomez signed clutch, I’m not sure…

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Here in SF, the Aids Emergency Fund has an annual fundraiser called, “This Old Bag”, where exactly this sort of thing gets snatched up.  People willingly spend thousands for them.  Though I agree, Ms Selena doesn’t have quite the cachet as yet to garner huge amounts.

            • HomeOfficeGirl

Celebrities doing good!  I’m all for it.  ;-)

          • MilaXX

            Stans buy anything.

        • l_c_ann

Giving her a nice tax writeoff. for ” How much you wanna bet that clutch gets auctioned off at some charity event for bazillions of dollars?”

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I wonder about that.  I suspect the clutch was handed to her, she was asked to sign it, pose with it, and give it right back to them.

          • Karen Maslowski

She wouldn’t get a tax writeoff for that.

        • MilaXX

It’s a Coach bag and so far hasn’t even made retail price. https://www.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/3347796?preview=1

    • Tatiana Luján

      IMO, she needs a haircut.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

or at least a good de-fluffing.

      • Alyssa

No joke! That hair has got to go!

      • Kimbolina

        It’s taking over her torso.

    • Annabelle Archer

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I…don’t hate it.  Would I wear it?  No, but I’m not young nor do I have rockin’ lil’ bod.
I think it’s fresh and playful without being twee.  It’s interesting in a tactile, way.  I do think having her hair up would have been cute, but may have pushed towards “athletic” looking.

      • OrigamiRose

Took the words outta my mouth.

      • Janet B

Not a pretty dress, but attention getting which really is the point of most of these dresses.
Hair pulled back would have been better for sure.

      • Vickiefantastico

I don’t hate it either. Is it an odd dress? Sure. Would it be ugly on me? Of course. But on her, it’s not that bad.

And I actually love the shoe color with this.

      • Louise Bryan

I also don’t hate it, but I’m checking it out on my smartphone. And, btw, I always wanted huge fluffy hair.

      • formerlyAnon

It is infinitely better than the getup she’s in on the  magazine cover. (yes, I know it’s not for the same kind of event. but still.)

    • SophieCollier

She has a favorite pose, I see.

    • Clueless_Jock

      Tameth thy hair.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Frankendress & TOO MUCH HAIR!!!

    • mhleta

There’s something magical that happens when you charge an obscene amount of money for a garment that prevents people from realizing that it’s actually quite ugly and shouldn’t be worn. However, if you hung it on the clearance rack at Marshall’s for $28 it would be stripped of its magical powers and I guarantee it would never leave the store.

      • Kayceed

Yes, I saw this as Donatella’s ode to Regretsy.

    • mjude

      agree

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I think we can go ahead and throw the cover shot outfit into the “pure ugly” bucket while we are at it.  Efficiency.

      NEXT!!

      • RebeccaKW

What is that outfit on the cover?  Floral shorts over…cuffed denim shorts?  That whole thing is frightening.

        • kimmeister

Yes, the double shorts are more offensive to me than the dress!

    • BrooklynBomber

Those shoes aren’t helping one bit. They belong on a 35 year old. In Las Vegas. In 1962.

    • kirkyo

Well props to her for still managing to look pretty good, then.

    • MilaXX

I don’t hate it. Remove that WWF belt detail at the waist and I’d be okay with it. This is a dress that a 20 something, thin starlet could get away with.

    • E. D.

You can’t even see the earrings due to the hair.  Total fail.

    • Judy_S

I think it looks cute on her, better than on the model. I agree that it’s ugly but I think a huge amount of current fashion, including plenty of werq-y stuff on this blog, is ugly (in fact, I tend to think of a werq as “wearing a hideous garment in a way that makes the camera willing and wanting to keep looking”).

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I like the color of the shoes but that’s about it.  Most of those totally crazy Versace outfits were not meant to be worn by mere mortals, I think, even those with star billing.

    • Judy_J

And as if it wasn’t ugly enough, she added that little piece of nude fabric to the hem of the dress.

      • RebeccaKW

I noticed that.  Was she worried that bit was too short and she might flash?  B/c nude illusion netting won’t stop that.

    • crash1212

My first thought was – finally, a Frankendress done right – who knew? Congrats Atelier Versace! I like the choice of shoes with this and the hair…is young starlet hair, it bugs, but what are ya gonna do? Upon further inspection, my opinion didn’t change – I could do without that heavy weight title belt detail, but I don’t even hate that. I think she looks cute and this is a dress deployed appropriately.

    • lexilexi

That hair is half her size.  Just too too.

    • BayTampaBay

I like it.  I really do.  Then again I love anything Versace.

The problem is that Selena is really too short to wear this dress.

    • jw_ny

well…recycling is “in” so using all the scraps from the cutting room floor is quite “green”…nice to see designers thinking ecologically  ;)

      /sarcasm

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Still a cuter look than standing with Bieber.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

I’m going against the grain here.  For some strange reason, I like it.  Tho’ a belt without the alphabet would be a better choice.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

It looks like she’s the champion of the Needlepoint Pugilism Association, and that’s the title belt.

    • OrigamiRose

What will it take to make the “duckface” out enough for celebrities to cease making it?

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

It makes me think of the part of Disney’s Cinderella where her evil stepsisters rip off chunks of her dress.

    • RedRaven617

It is an ugly dress; but she is making it work. Youth forgives many things. She needs a few less extensions in that hair.

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

I actually kind of like the dress. Ah, to have the body of a 19-year-old (or however old she is,) again…

    • quiltrx

That’s one hell of a FUGLY dress!  Looks like a home dec project gone horribly wrong…”I don’t like these weird curtains I made, so I’ll just weave them into a dress.”

I think it ONLY looks okay on the model because it’s seen from a distance, under bright lights.  All the weirdness kind of blurs together…but it’s still SO WEIRD.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

This looks like a “clothes of your back” Project Runway challenge.  One of the poor to mediocre entries.

    • SewingSiren

She should have gone all Monster High with the styling . White streaks at the temples and platform boots…. then it would have been a big hit with me.

    • JasmineAM

Selena Gomez in Atelier Buffalo Bill.

    • bertkeeter

Dont forget the Fring Frankeslip she added peeping out at the bottom “V”!

    • schadenfreudelicious

      so much hair……

    • http://twitter.com/dixielou8 Ashley

      I kinda like it *shrugs*

    • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

But what do you think about all that HAIR? so.much.hair!

    • kittenwithaquip

What is the obsession with long, spaniel hair about anyway? Too much hair creeps me out almost as much as those people who don’t cut their fingernails for 20 years and can barely function. A friend of mine is going on and on about how she doesn’t want to cut her 3-year-old’s hair because “OMG, it’s SO pretty and gets SO many compliments”. However, her daughter’s hair is so long she pees on it. WHUUUUT? People will only compliment her kid’s hair until they close enough to realize it reeks of urine.

Conversely, when I grew my hair out to donate it to Locks of Love, my mom told me I was too old for long hair (I’m in my 40s). Bitchez be trippin’.

Now that I got that rant off my chest, Selena needs to cut that shit. She’s already a bobble head with her big ol’ head on a tiny body. It’s a wonder her neck supports it all. The dress is FUGLY. I don’t even want to contemplate how much that hiddy thing cost, and I am at a loss when it comes to understanding why someone thought to make a big “XV” in the middle of it all.

      • kimmeister

EWWWWW!  I’ve always thought that hair you can sit on is way too long, but I hadn’t ever considered being able to pee on it.

    • xmixiex

I don’t know, I don’t HATE it- except for the WWF roman numeral belt, that I hate.  without it it has promise…?

    • almondemy

It was a Monet for me. The longer I looked at i the, more I hated it.  Liked the pairing of orange shoes, though.  I thought that was a bit inspired. HATE the hair. Somebody needs a trim.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

That is the actual definition of Frankendress.

    • spooki C

It’s a really ugly dress to begin with but pairing it with those shoes is a real crime of fashion. That green and orange together is making me want to vomit.

    • aristida_girl

I actually kind of like it..the stitching is cool and at least it is a frakendress that clearly intends to be a frankendress, not just an accident of poor design like the usual frankendresses we see..
also, she looks comfortable, which is always a plus…
if we were voting i would give her an in..

    • Anathema_Device

She is so pretty, but that is one bad dress. Looks like it was made by a hippie on acid.

      • libraangel

        LOL Love your description

    • stubbornthoughts

Looks like a dress her grandma made out of leftover quilting materials. The real crime here is the amount on hair on her head. If that’s all her real hair, I don’t envy her shower routine.

    • Zippypie

I actually like it.  The colors are kind of meh but the shape and the piecing work in a 70′s leather wallet kind of way.  On anyone over 22, this would look stupid, but I think it works on her, especially for a hipster Nylon party.

But the shoes!  *shudder*  And the hair is a more atrocious crime.  I’m all for long, loose curls but she’s about to be devoured by her folicles.

      • kschwarting

She’s mostly pulling off the dress, but I feel like those shoes are literally screaming at me.

    • decormaven

Gives a whole new connotation to “whipped up a little outfit.” Plus that’s a pure cascade of hair on such a tiny moppet.

    • Nancy Dunn

I actually like the dress, or at least most of it. I don’t like those Roman numerals in the front of it, but I love the hem on the model. I am not sure what she did to the hem in the front with that gauzy thing.

She seems like a cute young lady, but I am really not sure why she remains famous.

      • alyce1213

Apparently, she sells a lot of albums (not to me) and sells out concerts (I’ve never been).
She has her following, I guess.  For the most part, from what I’ve seen here, she wears nice clothes and has good taste.
And then, there’s the Bieber thing.

      • libraangel

Actually, her singing voice is pretty darn good.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Look Mom!  Today in Home Ec we made dresses out of old oven mitts.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

      LOVE the model’s shoes!

    • alyce1213

I kind of like it, in a jolie-laide way.  It’s weird and fun.
I think it looks cool on her 20-somethingness. She’s selling it.

      • DTLAFamilies

Agree that her 20-somethingness makes it. It would be tragic on an older woman but on her it looks cute and fun.

    • marilyn

That looks like a quilter’s design effort.  It is okay for home sewing, but not worthy of anything better.  The horror of this picture is the shoes, both in color and style.

    • Laura James

She looks like she got in a fight with a sofa and a macrame plant hanger.

    • deathandthestrawberry

Argh! When will hair extensions go out of style. Her hair looks horrible!!! I’m surprisingly apathetic about the dress, but that hair!!

    • Imasewsure

I hate to put myself out there for this dress, but I think it looks cute on her and I don’t think it even comes close in ugly to some of the monstrosities that Queen Frankendress, Ms Julianne Moore, wears on a daily basis. Shoes are fugly though….

    • procrastinatrice

I know people already said it, but yeah, I don’t see the whole Frankendress thing. It’s pretty cute on her actually. The shoes are another story…

    • Super_Red

I don’t hate it- It’s not my favorite dress of all time, but I’m not really seeing the frankendress. I think it works for her and for the venue.

    • Jill Morino

Duck lips? Really? I dont hate the dress. Not my favorite, but does looks super duper tiny in it, so there’s that!

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I’m not going to lie, those shoes are really cute.

    • kimmeister

Apparently my understanding of “Frankendress” is different than how TLo uses it, because the only real jarring part to me is the belt.  For a split second I actually thought it was a Superbowl reference, but then I remembered that there have been way more than fifteen Superbowls.

    • LuisaNL

that really is one ugly dress. shame, she is cute as a button.

    • oohsparkley!

I confess that I actually thought it was a cute dress for a second. Then I thought it would be much cuter without the white/light parts, some other fabric or print would be better. Then I looked closer and the stitching embellisments are definitely frankensteinian. I started wondering about the 15 on the belt. Is it referencing Louie XVth furniture or something?  Too much time spent analyzing a questionable dress.  My point is: I thought it was almost cute.

    • subwaycars

Part of me really likes this dress, but it looks terrible on Selena.

    • https://openid.aol.com/opaque/50253638-569b-11e2-9c91-000bcdcb471e carolclark12

I should stop right now and never read or look at anything remotely fashion related.  I actually liked the dress … and the belt … and the shoes.  Is there a fashion rehab for me?

      • libraangel

Don’t know – but you better sign up and go!

    • Monabel

At least her awful hair covers up a lot of the dress.

    • S_Swift

At first glance I thought the white patch on her hip was her clutch.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

No wonder she tried hiding it under all that hair.

    • Stubenville

Oh look – she’s done something clever with old curtains.

    • Lisa Dugan

She is really adorable, just the sweetest face.  But that dress is terrible.

    • lrober03

I wish she’d get a haircut or at least do something with it.  It looks like it weighs 10 pounds

    • libraangel

OH, how cute: Selena sews her own quilt-dresses!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

It looks like a camp craft project.  I made a wallet and a pair of moccasins that looked similar to this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=790818401 Laurie Landry

Is that an All-Star Wrestling Title Belt?
If the clutch had a number on it and she was holding that above her head inside the ropes of a boxing ring…maybe!

    • Vlasta Bubinka

Why oh why is there a 15 in roman numerals just above her crotch?

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

It actually looks really cute on the runway, but as soon as you get it off the runway, it’s hideous.

    • demidaemon

When I saw that it was the Frankendress of all Frankendresses, I was really expecting something much worse. Like Peter Pilotto level Frankendress. This, while hideous, not her dress, and a Frankendress, just does not meet the level of Dr. Frankendress himself, Peter Pilotto.

    • guest2visits

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Yes, ugly dress.  And I’ve seen goats with better hair grooming than this girl.  Is something nesting in there?  Yeesh.

    • Anniebet

There’s a dress there? All I see is hair.

    • pookiesmom

It’s not a very cute dress, but at least it looks like all the parts go together. Yes, there is loud suturing all over the place, but the fabrics seem to fit with each other in texture and design. I feel like in order to win the Frankendress title, it should look like lots of different fabrics & styles & textures stitched together against their will. IMO those front/back dresses (where the front looks like a completely different dress than the back) are uglier and more Frankendressy.

…and never in my wildest dreams did I expect to write such a diatribe on the proper definition of “Frankendress.” I don’t know whether to be pleased or horrified.

    • siriuslover

It’s unfortunate that they put such a beautiful young woman in such an awfully ugly dress.

    • elemspbee

cute girl though. but one who needs a desperate haircut. She’s the hair with a girl attached to it.

    • Gener1c

T & Lo – Where are your Dallas recaps??  I am waiting in anticipation!

    • http://twitter.com/algaechick algaechick

One Frankendress to rule them all.

    • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen

I still have problems taking her seriously, because PBS still shows episodes of “Barney” in which she co-stars. Barney!

    • Terrible_Person

It’s awkward even on the model. And it’s surpinsinlgy boring for a Frankendress…

    • maggiemaybe

Golly. Frankendress and orange creamsicle shoes. That’s, um… that’s really something.

    • librarygrrl64

Hideous from the neck down. :-(

    • ccm800

Just as ugly on the runway. Its an homage to Donatella…also barely stitched together.

    • formerlyAnon

Honestly, though, 2 points in its favor: It’s not aggressively trampy, always a possibility with Versace but not her image, and it’s downright LOVELY compared to the get-up they’ve got her in on the cover.

As long as she stands next to the poster, that dress is gorgeous. Hope someone carried it around behind her all night.
