Sarah Jessica Parker in NYC

Posted on January 23, 2013

This is what Sarah Jessica wears to take her trash to the curb.

Sarah Jessica Parker steps out for a night out in a Giambattista Valli Couture coat and a Mary Katrantzou dress paired with a Lanvin bag, Fred Leighton jewelry, and Jean-Michel Cazabat shoes.

Giambattista Valli Couture Floral Jacquard Coat

Stars! They’re just like us!

Now, we get that this is a LOT of look and might even understand an initial reaction of “WHAT? She looks INSANE!” To which we would reply, “YES! Insanely good!” Because it’s true, we kinda love this outfit and we kinda love her for going there. Not many people would pair that coat with that dress and we applaud her boldness. But – and this might sound a little silly, given how much wackiness we’re willing to forgive – we think the purse and the shoes were bad mistakes. She really, really needed very simple accessories to go with this outfit.

It looks like Mrs SJP agrees with you!  Matthew looks a bit dubious back there.

    • Elizabetta1022

Yes. Or it kind of looks like they just had a fight or something, even though they could have been perfectly happy when this moment was captured. God, I would hate to have paparazzi taking my photos right after (or during) an argument with my husband. In a strange way, the paps have taken over the narrative of many celebrities’ lives. Tabloids tend to build stars (and their relationships) up, then start tearing them down… I often wonder if they cause break-ups because of their imaginary story lines sometimes.

      • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Maybe they had a row over the remote.

        • Sweetbetty

Is that what she’s carrying in her right hand?

          • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

I’ve been known to carry it with me in spite myself.

    • NC_Meg

I just noticed him back there! I never would have thought Matthew Broderick could look creepy but now I know he can.

    • Rebecca Jay

      He looks constipated to me.

  • kirkyo

Not sure how much Matthew approves of the look, however.

  • queeniethebold

The coat is glorious. The dress is OK. The hair is tragique, as are the shoes and purse.

    But that coat? To. Die.

    • Sobaika

I love the dress and the shoes too, not paired with that coat though. All three pieces are to die.

    • 3boysful

To die IN.  Clearly someone at GV is pining for their long-departed mother/grandmother/great-aunt.  Take away the dropped skirt section, and there you have it:  1960′s housecoat.

For me–and differences are what makes the world spin ’round–this outfit is whack.

      • Marian Humin

        Agree

      • littlemac8

Housecoat it is!!!  And that skirt longer than the coat ruins whatever lines that housecoat aspired to.  The whole thing looks cray-cray although I might like individual pieces.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I would love the coat if SJP had paired it with a different dress.  Two strongly patterned garments are fighting with each other, plus the length of the dress with the coat is not working for me.

    • NNgela

Why is the hair tragic? I think it looks good on her.

  • FionaTF

The coat looks exactly like a shiny 70′s era bathrobe to me. Yuck. I like the combination of patterns and colors that she managed, but I think the coat is awful.

    • Lori

That’s what bugged me about it. My mom had this housecoat when I was in elementary school.

  • Noelle Haland

I love the whole outfit, cray-cray and all. That dress is fabulous on her, and so is the coat!

  • Verascity

I’m with you, actually. Great coat, great dress, great pairing, terrible accessories. Hair and makeup are looking pretty dull, meanwhile…

  • Mightiadd

Great coat. Fine dress. But no, not together.  You applaud her boldness, I worry about her blindness.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

    So…much…going…on…

  • flower753

I *love* the dress and the coat is fine, but I don’t like them together.

  • GorgeousThings

I like the bag, but the bag and the shoes are too much.

Poor Matthew isn’t looking too happy.

    • formerlyAnon

I saw a series of photos of this exit yesterday and they looked exactly like (well, except for the high dollar clothing) like any slightly harried family getting out of the house. (Their son was with them.) Every single one of them had that “concentrating on getting out of here without snapping at anyone – oops! too late” look.

      • Introspective

that is exactly what family exits from my house are like. flustered demeanors, snappy responses and subsequent pangs of regret are essentially my bread and butter.

and SJP looks fab! in a crazy, “grandma’s wearing that housecoat from 1974 that she loves again” kind of way. and Im here for it.

  • Laura Wisneski

I adore this.  For petite, non-celebrity people like myself, I would cut the jacket off right where it starts to puff out.
The colors in that brocade are just gorgeous.

    • kimmeister

I love the fabric of the coat, but I don’t like the volume in the bottom either.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I don’t mind the bag, but the shoes are a big ugly NO.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

Love the fabric for the coat; the design of it, though, leaves me cold.  Very unflattering no matter who would be wearing it.  Who puts gathers at that point of a garment? It automatically widens the entire tushie.  As bold as her decision is to combine that coat with that dress, I think I’d have a massive headache if I had to look at her longer than 7 seconds.  Hope Matthew had his own car waiting for him!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I love love love that dress.  The coat is pretty, but the shape is not my favorite.

  • Little_Olive

Hm. I don’t love it; I still think it’s too much print and not the right way. Minus the shoes and purse I’d give it a pass, though.

Also, the print of the dress makes an owl on her belly and now I cannot unsee it.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can’t say I’m loving the coat at all.   The dress, however, is lovely.  Matthew looks rather unimpressed with it all.  lol

    • Karen Maslowski

Agreed. I love that dress. Full stop.

  • B_C_J

I admire the boldness of her choices. However, this is a lot to process. The pieces individually are quite wonderful (in particular the coat) but paired together it feels a bit dizzying. Even if you accept the coat with the dress, the shoes are a huge mistake.

  • Chillmer

I love the coat so much. I would kill for something similar. I don’t like how the bottom of the dress hangs out of it, though. I agree, the shoes and bag are killer but need to be on a simpler outfit.

  • miagain

The sum of the parts are indeed greater than the whole…

  • Judy_J

It’s too, too much.  My eyes couldn’t focus on one single thing.

    • 3boysful

       Exactly.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I love that dress unreservedly. The coat, not so much, but I think it looks interesting here. The shoes need to be burned.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

    Dying for that dress.
I like Matty’s glasses (let’s pretend we’re on a nickname basis with both of them – Matty and Sarah Jessy, like they’re obnoxious rich wasps in private because… they probably are).

  • MilaXX

Yay! I was thinking the same thing. I’m all for mixing prints, and I like the dress and coat but the shoes and bag needed to be a solid color. Otherwise I think she looks great.

  • In_Stitches

It’s like she found the three pieces in her closet that she’s never worn because they’re a bit much and it’s hard to find an occasion to bust them out, even for a celebrity, and just said F it, I’ll wear them all at once.  The PTA won’t know what hit em…

  • Martha Anderson

but it is time to move on from the hair and makeup styling

  • nannypoo

I don’t see how this randomness can be called an “outfit”. While she’s at the trash can she should drop it in.

  • capybara_cafe

The dress looks great on her, but I just can’t with all of that print. Just. Can’t.

  • Call me Bee

Love this a lot, but yes.  The shoes are just a tiny step too far.
And isn’t it, like, 10 dgrees in NYC right now?  How nice that one can run bare-legged wearing a decidely spring-weight, albiet awesome, coat from your warm house right into a waiting (warmed-up) car.  Yeah–celebs are just like us.

    • Jessica Rowe

I was thinking the same thing!  Isn’t she cold, the poor thing?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=664429801 Kate Clausen

Hey, at least you have a car!  This Brooklynite was waiting at the bus stop today with the -2 wind chill.  So spring coats and bare legs will have to wait until, well, spring for me.

    • SugarSnap108

Just a few days ago it was in the 50s, close to 60 degrees.  I imagine these photos were taken then.

  • Carrieanno

It’s all very SJP.  She never bores.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Great outfit! Love it. I’m a fan of mixing patterns.

  • crash1212

I’ll give you the shoes, but I like the purse with this. She looks great.

  • duchessofjersey

Agreed. Love the coat, and the dress, and love them together – like a Gustav Klimt painting with the beautiful busy prints next to each other. But I think she let Suri Cruise pick her accessories.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Love the comparison to a Klimt painting!

  • christinewithanx

She sure is channeling Helen Roper here, hoowee, that’s a lot of…everything. For some reason, I love it?

    • Elizabetta1022

      Helen Roper! Love it.

  • Nancy Dunn

Mixing patterns is one thing, but I think this look is crazy, and not in a good way. Having said that, how annoyIng, to have photographers camped outside your house, waiting for you to come out. I would hate that kind of life.

  • formerlyAnon

I like this. A lot. I also find it amusing that short of a grey tie, husband Matthew couldn’t BE more of a neutral backdrop for her.

  • samitee

    Want it, all of it.

(Okay, except the purse. I guess I could burn it for warmth on this frigid day.)

  • Janet B

I don’t like the purse at all. The rest looks like a fine SJP outfit.

(first thing I noticed about her purse was how full it looked, which seems unusual for a celebrity)

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/AOBSJV6HLYYU7YOR34YW5KOMSE Jane

    That purse is adorable.

  • SugarSnap108

I actually really like the coat and dress together, which surprises me.  Or maybe I’m just willing myself to like the combo because I adore the individual pieces.  And I think the purse goes well, too (well, at least with the dress).  It’s the shoes that go too far (how dare they?)

I guess this must have been taken last week/this weekend when we were having a very warm January stretch.

And awww, Matthew in the background with his glasses.

  • Judy_S

Yes! she needs a simpler trashbag but the nightgown and robe are great.

  • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

Matthew Broderick is just too cute! Not to mention, ageless…were there any dark-haired elves in Lothlorien?

    • mhleta

      Ageless? Watch “Ferris Beuller” again.

      • http://twitter.com/k8twolf Katie Wolf

I’d imagine you’d be a real treat standing at the water-cooler while your 8-months-pregnant coworker receives several “you look amazing!” complements.

  • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

Sometimes SJP looks like SJP, and sometimes she looks like Carrie Bradshaw. This is most definitely a Carrie Bradshaw look

  • SapphoPoet

Great coat and dress–mixing the patterns somehow works here. Agree the shoes and the purse are a bridge too far. And it looks like she forgot to do her hair.

  • mhleta

Yes, it’s definitely best to select a simpler shoe and bag when one is dressing like a fucking Easter basket.

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

My God, yes.  Hate the bottom flouncey bit of the purse, too.

  • mmc2315

    Nice!  Funky!

  • CassandraMortmain

Every piece is pretty amazing on its own but the combination is crazy.  And not in a whimsical, someow-it-works way, but in a crazy bag lady way.  Craziest of all is venturing outdoors for even 5 seconds with bare legs.  It’s so cold in NYC right now that even indoors you should have all body parts covered if you want to be comfortable.

  • Susan Collier

Those are her simple shoes and purse, dahling! Why, the purse is practically neutral!

  • butterflysunita

I love the coat and dress, and love them together.  But is it spring in NYC?  Did I miss something?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

    Agree 100%

  • E. D.

Love the coat.  Would love the dress in warmer weather and a bit shorter.  The rest – blech.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I am loving everything that is happening here. What I wouldn’t give for that dress…

  • stubbornthoughts

I swear, SJP is the only celeb I love mixing patterns like this. She just pulls it the fuck off.

  • http://twitter.com/phd_tv Heather B.

Lol I love Matthew Broderick just lurking in the background.

  • jonnyf8

Look at that face though.  She doesn’t doubt herself for an instance. LOVE this!!!

  • marilyn

As long as she is doing the crazy-thing, the shoes and purse fit right in.  What amazes me, is that she takes out her own garbage.  You would think she would have someone to do that for her.

  • Alyssa Stanfield

I love that dress. And I would love to own that coat…but agree, the accessories are a bridge too far for this look.

  • Vanja

That coat is divine, gorgeous colour and print. I like the combination of the coat, dress, purse and fab shoes. Pairing it with simple shoes and purse would have made this outfit boring a lot less eye-popping.

  • Christa Hylton

If she had worn simple shoes and bag it would’ve looked apologetic. This is a look you have own in its entirety. Now, if she’d carried the wackitude into her hair, jewelry (of which you can see none) or make-up, THEN she would’ve looked like an idiot. Or Lady Gaga. But I am on-board with shoes and bag. I think they work.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Well said.

  • Kimbolina

Hate the coat, both the shape (weird poof at the bottom) and the print (1970s polyester dressing gown) and yet somehow it works with the dress.  Really do not like the shoes and bag with this though.  It takes it from thoughtful pattern mixing to crazy lady grabbing whatever random stuff she has in the closet.

  • Unkempt

I love how she went all in with the patterns.  All out?  All over?  Who else could do that?  If I dressed like that and a neighbor saw me, I’d be taken by the elbow, sat down and gently questioned if my cat had died.  She looks like a walking Klimt painting!

  • Cathy S

I don’t like the print on the coat at all but the dress is great.

  • RedRaven617

OK, why is there a Christmas tree out for the garbage on Jan 23? I’m going to assume this photo is from earlier this month. As for the look…. . well I can’t say a thing. Just too much.

    • EEKstl

Believe it or not we still have people with Christmas lights up in our neighborhood, which makes me assume their trees are still up too.

  • traceyishere

I love every inch of it, even the shoes.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

You know, SJP, some nights it is actually NICE to stay in.

  • Imasewsure

She looks great except for the shoes… didn’t notice the purse really so I’m giving it a pass

  • golden_valley

My mother would say “Some people have more money than taste.”  She would say that after seeing this photo.  She would also say “Who would wear a housecoat in public?”

  • beebee10

What you said! I love where she goes with fashion.

  • jw_ny

If she had the coat buttoned up, I’d hate it.  That coat really goes well with the dress, in that odd way, but on its own, it looks like a old ladies house coat.

    Shoes were definitely too much.

    Trash…I don’t see trash…you talkin’ about Matty?  ;)

  • another_laura

With you on all counts, T Lo!  It’s very fun for me until I get to the shoes, and then oy that purse is ugly with anything, I’m afraid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

See; I like this.  It’s so NYC.  This is why she’s iconic.  I think she looks high fashion Bohemian fabulous.

  • Elizabetta1022

TLo, you are so right. I love the dress and coat (even together) but the shoes and purse take it into grandma town. Still, I kind of love the wackiness of it all. I admire her for her sense of humor and whimsy when it comes to fashion. She seems to have fun with it and it shows.

  • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

You guys are on the money…as usual. Mary Katrantzou, sigh, makes me wish I was rolling in dough. I love the coat and the dress. I love the shoes too but just not with this outfit. The bag, just no.

  • http://twitter.com/Bloodisea Barbora

    Love that coat!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I love the coat. The rest is crazy old rich lady, emphasis on OLD. This look ages her so much, it saddens me.

  • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

The coat is so much better on her than on the model. Now I’m just playing paper dolls–I wish I could see the coat and shoes together with a less-printed dress.

  • EEKstl

SJP went where few would boldly go before with that combo but I agree it totally works pattern-wise.  The coat being so much shorter than the dress is where it loses me, but I’ll forgive her.  Now WHERE have I seen that coat before???  Did TLo post a Giambattista Valli collection or was it on a different ladystar previously?

  • ChiKat67

I love both the coat and the dress but given the drop waist/fuller skirt on the coat, I would have prefered the dress be more fitted to balance out the volume of the coat.  Completely agree on the shoes & purse.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I think maybe only SJP could get away with putting all these individually fabulous pieces together and make it look even more fabulous.

  • MzzPants

Poor Matthew, blurry in the background.

  • jennsilentcrow

J’Adore. Call me crazy!  i’ll even throw in the shoes for good measure, while they are CURIOSER and CURIOSER avec the whole get-up.
Madame looks like she could use some sleep tho..

  • http://twitter.com/Lily1129 Lily

I’ve never understood her fashion sense. She always looks like she got dressed in the dark and pulled on whatever was closest. Most everything she wears are great pieces, they just never go together.
Maybe I just don’t ~get~ her. Which I am totally open to, btw.

  • http://twitter.com/rmcgrudiva RL McGruder

I love all those pieces – although I probably would have chosen different shoes, because I’d have to take the coat off sometime, and i don’t think they look as stellar with just the dress.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m not sure ‘very simple’ is in her fashion vocabulary, unfortunately. So close!

  • http://www.facebook.com/D.D.D.Dino Dino Bonačić

such a carrie look. LOVE LOVE LOVE! WERQ <3

  • notdorothygale

All is lost with that long straggling hair. Update, please, SJP. I was watching old episodes of SATC and she had a short bob that looked great on her.

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

I love all of it, actually.  And I tend to have problems with her, so I guess that’s saying something.  But I do love it, she’s like an upscale crazy cat lady!  She probably has cat food in her purse.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

All of those prints are giving me a headache.  And the print of that coat looks like hotel/motel “art”.   The shot of the model in the coat also looks dowdy.  Fugly.

  • Trisha26

The shoes and purse need to be burned. The coat and dress are each unique and very pretty. But not together.

  • LittleKarnak

Love the coat and dress, can live with the shoes and purse, cannot abide that hair….

  • profritz

Ugh.  The hair.  What is with the center part and grown out color?  Love her look always, never quite sure about the hair.

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

    crazy fun.  good girl!

  • Louise Bryan

There’s a whole lot going on there, but I like it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Isn’t it super-cold in NYC right now? OK, so I know she’s just going from the front door to the car. But still, I want to put gloves on her and tell her to button up her coat. And it would drive me CRAZY to have my hair blowing in the wind like that – esp the wind tunnels that build up in the city.

  • quiltrx

Love the coat and the dress, but I might like them better not-together.  They’re fab, though.

And AS IF she takes out her own trash.  At least she doesn’t try to make us believe she does, like Gwyneth.

  • Cautia

I’ve always kinda loved how square these two seem.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_26F5YJPMIK5OMIMBUBYFZISM6A Howard

I don’t hate this look am just not sure. It is hard to pull off two bold prints without clashing, however she did it. I agree on a understated  purse an shoes , not really bothered by the hair but not really liking it either.

  • guest2visits

    Agree; the coat and the dress are both beautiful items and they even work well together;
but the shoes and bag have taken it into cluttered eccentricity.

  • Adriana_Paula

I like it all; ALL I tell you!  And I’m glad she took some length off her hair.

  • librarygrrl64

I was JUST going to say that I can deal with the coat and dress together, but the shoes are OUT with this.

  • ccm800

Someone is hoping for Spring while still covering up! Loves it!
