Rachel Weisz in Bottega Veneta

Posted on January 09, 2013

We really like this look, but your assignment is to guess the one thing we hate.

Rachel Weisz attends ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ New York Screening at Museum of the Moving Image in a Bottega Veneta dress paired with a Smythson clutch and Charlotte Olympia pumps.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Maud Welzen

Charlotte Olympia Dolly Island Platform Pump

It’s somewhere between “updated 1940s” and “sexy secretary.” It just feels grownup and pretty in a not-too-attention-seeking kind of way. Love the color, the shape, and the print. Could’ve done without the gold platforms on those shoes, because it’s a bit distracting. If you mentally edit them out, it looks much better. But that’s not where the hate comes in; it’s that clutch. It really doesn’t seem to go with the outfit at all. Kind of an ugly color and a bit too large for the look. With the secretarial vibe she’s got going on, it almost looks like she’s toting a file folder around.

Oh, wait. There’s one more thing we hate: the makeup. She is much, much prettier than these pictures would have you believe. Her eyes look consumptive, her skin too pale, and that lip color doesn’t go with the outfit at all.

Basically, it’s a good look with some minor detailing issues. We really do love that dress, though.

I guessed shoes and/or make up.

  • gabbilevy

I don’t mind the clutch but the makeup is making my cry into my keyboard and the gaps in the back of her shoes are as distracting as the gold platforms.

Love the dress on her, though.

    Dear Makeup Artists of Hollywood,

I think the world of what you do. Really. Makeup artist was one of my When I Grow Up dreams, along with astronaut and backup dancer.

Pictures like this make me reconsider my life choices and current career path. Why? Because brick-colored eye makeup should not be a thing. Contouring is essential, particularly when flash photography tends to flatten the face. And fleshy lip colors are not always flattering nor appropriate, don’t you see? Consider this fair warning. Otherwise I’ll be there in no time, makeup kit in hand. And I WILL steal your job. You’re probably already fired.

    Sincerely,

    Fed-Up-Because-There-Are-YouTube-Beauty-Gurus-Who-Could-Do-Better aka Sobaika

      You are too funny!!

    • StellaZafella

Your name means funny as hell! I spit my coffee on my computer screen…again!

    • Celandine1

I really do love you in a totally platonic fellow BK way.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

Amen, sister! 9 times out of 10 the nude lop looks bad and the red spectrum eye make up trend needs to die a quick death.

  • http://profiles.google.com/clairehaley1 Claire Haley

I loooove the dress. That was a good collection in general, but this was definitely my favorite look.

  • schadenfreudelicious

another celeb wearing ill fitting shoes, though she does get to go home to Daniel Craig so there is that…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Going home to Daniel Craig would be more than fair compensation for ill-fitting golden-hoof shoes.

    • Pants_are_a_must

More like carried home by Daniel Craig, by the look of these shoes.

      • schadenfreudelicious

perhaps there is method in her madness? :)

        • Pants_are_a_must

Surely there are easier ways to get boinked by your husband.

    • Tatiana Luján

It seems as if her feet were 2 different sizes

  • http://www.facebook.com/jody.corbett Jody Corbett

I was going to guess the shoes. Huge tootsie roll clunkers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

That’s a fun game… you should play “Guess the Critique” more often!

  • StephanieLovesTLo

Love it except for the lip color and shiny forehead. I can live with the clutch; love the shoes, dress and hair.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Those shoes make my eyes hurt. And the dress is very pretty, but it’s not really reading event dress.  Still, it looks good on her.

  • Allison Woods

I would like to see something break up that print–some kind of a belt-type thing.

Whatever’s been done with her makeup makes her not look like herself…unless of course, that’s knifework, which I so hope it is not.

  • rloliveira

    The shoes!

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

The 40s look really suits her. It’s a shame about the makeup, but I don’t hate the clutch.

  • pattyw

I thought for sure the correct answer would have been “pussy bow.”

    • Kristin McNamara

Or how insanely tight the fit is across her boobs. Check out the second picture of her and the fifth picture of her. In the fifth, the buttons looks about to burst!

      • Snailstsichr

         That was my guess, too.

  • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

I guessed clutch or make up! I am proud and … kinda creeped out by myself….

  • nannypoo

I agree, she is way prettier than she looks here. I would not have recognized her.

  • maggiemaybe

I was going to say lip color (because those dreadful shoes would have been much too obvious). I didn’t even notice the clutch…

  • Alessia M

wow. i definitely thought she was alia shawkat (maeby funke) from the thumbnail.

  • Judy_J

You guys hate the makeup, I hate the ill-fitting shoes.

  • Jackie4g

I guessed the uneven hemline! I never like platform  shoes, so I automatically figure everyone but me will like them, but really, she looks soft and pretty and very appropriate for a low key event. Yes, the fit across the bust of the dress is a bit strained, but that’s not anything a well fitted bra wouldn’t cure. Overall, just lovely. I like everything.

  • http://twitter.com/steeenie Christine Hart

    I immediately said makeup.

  • Sara__B

The dress is the only thing I like. The rest, from hair to shoes, is wrong.

  • StellaZafella

I like this dress…hell, I wore this dress when it was new fashion!
I don’t know what it is about Rachel Weisz, but  – though I always know it’s her, I don’t know why. She changes so dramatically with every hairstyle and styling look. With many notable celebrity faces there’s some immediately identifiable trait that “marks” them for recognition, no matter how outrageous the look. But she can really disappear into a character or style…I don’t mean that in a bad way, it just amazes me a little how I don’t recognize her so much as I just KNOW it’s her.

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

Love, love, love that dress. Totally agree that the clutch is wrong.

  • Ruth Preston

I guessed either the consumptive lip or the Pendaflex (TM) clutch.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

I love the whole look (well, the gold too-big platforms can go, and the clutch isn’t working but it’s not tragic to me). I did the gay gasp at her make-up. I feel like I had never seen her gorgeous eyes before, and I love the neutral lip. I want to know what color she’s wearing! So basically, I’m just a fool for this look. Once again in the minority, but I get so tired of the overdone smoky eye with all the liner and the red lip.

  • EACFord

In regards to the make-up: I opened the window, saw her name and then got distracted with some phone calls. When I came back to it I had forgotten who I was looking at. This make-up makes her unrecognizable and she has one of the more distinct looks in “Hollywood”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

No to the bag, no to the shoes.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Love her, love the dress, hate the shoes, hate the bag.

  • http://twitter.com/ndpndntfilm Susan Velazquez

Agreed. I thought the shoes were the problem. I like that the bag is green but it’s a dowdy color.I am sick of this oversized clutch trend too. Especially when they’re all so paper thin that you can barely fit a credit card.

  • E. D.

Hate the shoes, the bag, and why is her nose darker than the rest of her face?

  • Imasewsure

I hated the clutch so I figured everyone did…why bother? It’s not like she needs to carry anything but man is it dull and ugly

  • jmorino08

My guess was either consumptive eyes or those cow-hoof shoes. I WIN!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I wish she would have kept the belt, and I wish the shoes were actually her size. I agree that the clutch is totally incongruous. Her hair looks great, and I like her makeup, though she could have used a bolder lip.

  • Trisha26

She looks like the sister-wife version of Lea Michele. Don’t like anything about this outfit. Not one thing.

  • jilly_d

I love this whole look except for the makeup. I even love the clutch. So different. I am especially love the highlights in her hair. WANT.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I went, “that’s Rachel?” The makeup is hideous, but I love the rest of the look.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

I thought the cocker spaniel hair, makeup and lack of ANY jewellery.

  • guest2visits

The dress is cute but I thought the shoes weren’t the best for the look.
And speaking of make-up; I hate the what they did for her in the Bulgari ads. She can’t get a break.
The idea of trying to match the majestic granite and stone cliff with her FACE make-up was just bad. The dry, coppery shades
looked like old lady to me. Of course they were selling jewelry not make-up, but come on; she should have looked fantastic.

  • PrunellaV

I would have guessed those awkward, too-large shoes. Chop off the misshapen platform and a couple inches of heel and you’ve got a classy pump. Leave well enough alone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001222219306 Jessica Zipper

Awe damn!  I amlost always get these right but I said the shoes.  I actually really like the clutch…..

  • MilaXX

I like the  bag, but agree with you on the eye makeup & hate the shoes.

  • quiltrx

Yay I guessed boring clutch!  But on second look, that makeup is just BIZARRE.  I’ll try to distract myself while enjoying her very shiny hair.

  • Le_Sigh

Woohoo!  I guessed makeup!  I thought she could have used a way stronger… everything, but especially lip.  She looks very very ill.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

When will they stop ruining beautiful shoes by sticking a chunk of wood under the front & jacking up the heel another inch or two?  This trend can’t stop soon enough for me.  Sweet baby gherkins, if you’re going to make FM pumps, MUST they have hooves attached?
SO sick of these extra-cruel shoes.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Matchy shoes and handbag? A little pulling in the chestal region?  A pussy bow, however small?

  • Frank Lithium

Is her left foot shorter in length than her right one? Maybe is because of the pose, but whenever she has her right leg straight and her left one slightly bent, her left foot always seem too small for the shoe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

I actually like the dominatrix-y quality of the shoes with little-bo-peep dress and I like the contrast of the green clutch, but I’m a sucker for any green/red combo.

  • Janet B

Funny, I didn’t recognize her until someone mentioned Daniel Craig.

  • Anniebet

Very prim. Very bland. The clutch induces nausea. And, that type of platform shoe, which is showing up a lot lately, is grotesque.

Strangely, I like it overall, mostly because I’ve been going through my grandmama’s old pictures from the 40′s. T-Lo (is?) are spot on with the dating of the dress.

  • OrigamiRose

With you T-Lo, though, much as I despise gold, I would so WERQ those heels, in my size (they seem to be a half-size too much on her).

I really wanted to hate this but… she pulled it off.

  • merciblahblah

Bad makeup or not, I have a crush on her AND her husband. Have loved her ever since Stealing Beauty. Rachel? Daniel? Call me…

  • TRSTL

Great dress!  Although, I like it better with the skinny belt.  That clutch appears to contain state secrets. Or the seating chart for the next board meeting.

  • decormaven

This woman is so pretty; why can’t her stylists elevate her looks to match her beauty? The dress in color and shape suits her, but as hard as I run the design calculator, I cannot fathom the calculations that led to that reptilian clutch and jacked up pumps. That’s math of a much higher order, or no thought whatsoever.

  • MoHub

I guessed the makeup on first glance and the shoes after scrolldown.

  • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

The makeup! I wish she would have kept the belt also.

  • Anathema_Device

I adore that dress. I like it better with the belt shown in the runway pic. Agree on the shoes and bag.

  • teensmom99

She has the coloring for these muted Bottega Veneta colors (vs. Emma Stone).

  • elemspbee

I guessed them all: clutch, shoes (love ‘em but not with the dress), and her face. I mean her make up. Still though. very pretty.

  • Stubenville

Dustin Hoffman wore something similar in Tootsie

  • Louise Bryan

OK, the makeup is bad.  The shoes are … odd.  The clutch is boring.  The bodice looks strained almost to the point of breaking.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HIZ7S2FRLC52NXARXQ4ERHNOGE Liz

    Pussy Bow!

  • Northern_Light_27

I guessed makeup. She literally looks ill in the closeup, like “I’ve been sneezing all weekend, got no sleep, and am exhausted”. She’s gorgeous, I hope she fires her makeup artist.

  • KatieKissinger

Totally guessed the shoes- those are like disco jumpsuit shoes, not sexy secretary shoes.

  • http://remedialstitcher.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

I want that dress! It looks better with the belt, but I want it either way.

  • http://twitter.com/MissTanya Tanya Edwards

Ugh. Borrowed shoes that don’t fit.

  • http://www.aquashieldroofingcorp.com/ thorroofer

Nice shoes. They look good on a women
