Michelle Dockery in Peter Pilotto

Posted on January 29, 2013

Oh, Lady Mary. We just don’t know about this.

Michelle Dockery attends the Entertainment Weekly Pre-SAG Party in Los Angeles in a Peter Pilotto dress.

Peter Pilotto Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Elena Bartels

If we were kind, like your faithful ladies maid, Anna, we would smile gently and find some diplomatic way to steer you away from wearing this in public, but we’re not kind and we’re certainly not ladies maids. You’re stuck with bitchy queens this time and these bitchy queens think Peter Pilotto requires a doctorate in dress-wearing to pull off and sweetie, you’re barely eligible for an Associate’s degree at the moment. Baby steps, dear.  The red pointy-toed pumps are literally making us cringe.

Are we being mean? Because come on: her bust looks like an oven mitt.

Nobody but an anime character could/should wear that dress.

      Yikes, indeed.

  • Imasewsure

Hate the shoes but I kind of like the dress… wish the bottom had been a circle skirt instead of that weird flounce but overall I can live with it.

    • Tatiana Luján

      totally agree.
And the lenght of the dress… On the model, it hits a very different part of the leg than on Michelle. That alone ruis the proportions of the dress.
What’s the point of expensive clothing if you can’t tailor them to your best?

  • kimmeister

She might’ve been able to pull this off with a Bachelor’s degree if the skirt had stopped where the pattern ends, and if she threw on a small belt to divide the two patterns.  Just no on the shoes though.

    • Adriana_Paula

Yup, if this dress had a pencil skirt and belt I could have been on board.

  • I’m so confused. I want to love this, flattering shape, interesting print, good colours. But all I can see are sharks eating her boobs. Sorry Michelle

    • NinaBoo

As my momma says, “Bless her heart, she’s trying”.

    • carolynmo

Ha! That’s what the Fug Girls said.

      • Ha, I had to ween myself off the fug girls because I was spending too much time on the site… don’t draw me back in… (also depending on what I use to post my disqus profile or my twitter profile comes up here so purple dress Sinead and Sinéad Doyle above are the same person- I just need to figure out how to amalgamate them)

  • It’s still better than the sideboob dress.

  • AAGH, I’m so glad you said oven mitt because I was thinking the entire thing looked like one of those “retro” aprons off of Etsy, the sort with the hallucinogenically colored chili peppers and things on them!

I think I just hate the dress. She looks vaguely terrified to be wearing it, much as I suspect I would.

    • Rand Ortega

Literally, reading your post has prevented me from closing my mouth for a full minute.
When/if it does finally close I hope I can control myself enough not to have a stroke from laughing.

    • decormaven

Oven mitts from HELL! Coming to terrorize your neighborhood any second. Run for your life! AAAIIIIEEE! And those pumps are like a sharp stick in the eye. Lady Mary, now we’re in mourning!

  • mommyca

    I don’t know…. I actually liked it… I might be in the minority then…

    • 3boysful

We’ll hang together, mommyca.  If we chop off the flounce and get her a cute pair of sandals, we’d have a winner.

      • procrastinatrice

        Exactly this.

  • Everything shoulders up is gorgeous. Love those earrings. The dress… no.

    • Tatiana Luján

earrings, hair, makeup. She looks gorgeous.

  • kolokOlchik

    kitchen apron

  • I love Peter Pilotto, but this isn’t flattering Lady Mary. It’s like Edith in dress form – just insulting her. (Sorry, too soon after last episode?)

    • Kristin McNamara

It pulls off quite the optical illusion too…. the print and cut are so distracting, she literally appears to have no breasts whatsoever! NONE!

  • puffalumps

I just can’t with those shoes.

    • makeityourself

When in doubt, default to the black shoe! When in doubt, default to the black shoe!

That needs to be a commandment or something.

  • Sobaika

She’s… trying something here. It’s not exactly working for her but I applaud her interest?

  • filmcricket

I’d love it if that stupid flounce were removed. And yes, better shoes. The print’s pretty awesome, though.

  • Funkykatt

But her lips match her shoes and her hair matches her dress. Oh wait…matchy went out with the 70s.

    • StillGary

I know, I know, and TLo has opened my eyes to the dreariness of matching — but this is such a fetching red — I gotta admit I likes it.

  • Judy_J

No, you’re not being mean.  Whoever told her this dress was a good idea needs a sound thrashing.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i think she looks better than the model, but given the dress it’s not really a complement…

  • I hate the way the print matches up (or actually doesn’t).

  • crash1212

The Fug Girls said this looked like a shark attack. ‘Nuf said. Lady Mary does have the most beautiful eyes. Truth be told, I don’t this dress particularly rocks on the model either and I’m not sure there’s a person alive today who could make it work, or should want to try.

  • TheLaurenJean

I liked it a lot, until I hit the black ruffle. And then the shoes gave me a shock.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Classic scrolldown fug.

  • This is the first time I disagree with you, except for the shoes, they’re horrendous! But otherwise I think she looks fine for some weird reason, since I ALWAYS agree with you!

  • GorgeousThings

Peter Pilotto has thus far failed to impress me with his design talents.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

My 3 year old nephew could design something less insane than this.

    • demidaemon

  • MilaXX

I almost like this. The dress loses me on the bottom with the introduction of the blue color and those orange pumps. I agree that a PhD level fashionista could make this work. I am however, happy to see her wearing co,lr.

  • Dot

Valiant effort, but the shape of that dress is horrendously unflattering. It’s as if it has hardly any shape at all through the bodice and waist. I would love to rip that flounce off.

  • mellorcr

    I winced out loud!

  • This is really awful.  She needs help.  She looked good at the Golden Globes but apparently that was an aberration.

  • Janet B

I like her in the dress. There are flaws, but overall not a train wreck.

  • All I can see are what look like teeth and spikes positioned near her vagina. Maybe that’s what killed Mr. Pamuk.

    • StillGary

      OMG!!! Good one!

  • Annabelle Archer

One Vauthier Couture gown does not a fashionista make.

  • mhleta

Gah. I love the graphic part of this dress, but the rest of it is terrible, even on the model. Lose the dust ruffle and retool the top and  we might have something.

  • TRSmith

I think it looks like creepy monster eyes and mouth.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Maybe Lady Edith convinced her it was a REALLY good look.

  • I guess I liked it better than you guys. Minus those shoes, they make my eyes bleed. But her face looks gorgeous.

  • Carrieanno

That’s one fancy schmancy apron front.

  • butterflysunita

I agree that she’s not carrying this dress off.  But she looks pretty and at least it’s different.

  • Ruth Preston

Once you see the dragon, whose glinty eyes are on her boobs and whose maniacal grin covers her torso, you can’t not see it.

  • sweetlilvoice

I like the colors, love blue and coral red together. I have now noticed I am actually wearing those colors right now. The hem flounce is the worst part I think. It would have been much sleeker with a normal hem.

  • I’m not keen on hem flounces either but I think it’s kind of cute (minus the WTF shoes).

  • I love this dress on her cos it’s not exactly something you’d expect her to wear.

  • BendinIntheWind

I thought the beginning of this post was a joke… I actually love this look, 100%. I wish the hemline was a bit higher to make a similar length as the model (show a little more leg), but I think it’s weirdly great.

  • tallgirl1204

Dissenting opinion:  I think she looks fun and fierce, and anything BUT Lady Mary-like.  Which I think was her intent.  It also does nice things for her shoulders and neck which sometimes appear hunched/shortened to me in some of her more high-necked shoulder-emphasized looks.

  • MitchellGilburne

    The bodice is actually great…

  • Guidosdaddy

Love it.  Hate the black back drop taking away from the fabulous that is this dress.

    • BrooklynBomber

I agree: I’d like to see it NOT against a black backdrop.

  • A Pilotto dress I actually like.  Lose the dust ruffle and I think it would look much better.  Not sure if it’s her dress tho’.

  • erinbinek

This is definitely a dress more suited to an editorial.  Should not be worn on the RC.

  • It’s a great little dress, but if I were her stylist, I would have gotten rid of the ruffle and made the whole thing longer.

  • Kate4queen

    I kind of like it!

  • pax540

I can’t recall a single time that you’ve featured a star/starlet in Peter Pilotto who didn’t look like ass. Does anyone look good in Peter Pilotto?

    • l_c_ann

Same feeling when I saw his name.  He must live on a different planet where dimensions are different and fabrics only take prints at random.

    • Anathema_Device

I have, but not recently. I don’t care for the most recent collection, but some of their stuff has been incredible in the past.

  • j_anson

    I actually like this.

  • From the neck up, I’m on board. I am even okay with the hair. I like the bodice of this dress and think it’s really interesting and pleasantly outside of her usual choices. I think that if the strap had been shortened a bit so it hits her a little higher, I would have liked it quite a bit. After that, chop off the hem ruffle and belt the waist and burn those shoes and I think this would have been a very chic and unexpected look for her.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

She’s so pretty – and if the dress – if somehow that placard went all the way down – or into a skirt or or or— wait.   I’m rationalizing because I like HER.  I don’t think that the dress is save-able.  Sigh.

  • Zippypie

She looks like she should be standing in front of a gas grill flipping burgers.  Would you like fries with that?

    Makeup looks very nice though.

  • i don’t get that much hate like you – i kinda like it.

You guys slay me!  I was disagreeing with you…thinking she was looking fresh and pretty and modern out of her Lady Mary duds, til I got to the oven mitt comment!  Totally agree!  And she is letting the dress wear her, not enough confidence for this doctorate level dress!

  • I like the whole thing

  • carpediva

Agreed the shoes are a sign of the apocalypse but otherwise? I think she looks pretty great, one of the best she’s ever looked!

  • fringebenefit

Horrible. Peter Pilotto should be ashamed of himself as well. Looks like the outfit I made in 5th grade home economics class.

  • Lasallianzinc

I like the dress on the model. The bodice motifs aren’t symetrical on Dockery’s version and it’s bugging the Hell out of me.

  • clevRcat

Wow – It’s a dress with a crazy clown face.  Kinda like it.

  • a_liking

I am just so awed by her fabulous brows I can barely even think about the dress (… though yeah it’s not good.)

  • Trisha26

I just posted on another page that I wanted to see some straps or halters – but not like this! It looks like she’s wearing an apron over her party dress.

  • libraangel

    Ah, yikes! Ah……yikes again!

  • subwaycars

I love the dress actually, though I’m not terribly in love with the length or the bit at the bottom, but the shoes are definitely NAGL.

  • Anathema_Device

Aww I like it. But I saw tea cozy where you saw oven mitt.

  • kategs

You are being mean!  She looks polished and those colors are wonderful.  HOWEVER that hemline peplum ruffle thingy needs to go.  And I know you will cringe again, but there’s so much going on with that dress the shoes need to be clean lined and simple and these are.

  • annrr

I like the dress, but she looks sooo uncomfortable. Could have found a better shoe.

  • VeryClaire

A little busy maybe, but she looks great. I did not see “apron” until everyone else said it.

  • Honestly, it looks like an apron one might wear while cooking at the backyard barbeque on luau night.  How revolting.

  • quiltrx

Someone send this to Miss Dita…I think she might know what to do with it. (and maybe she’d take off that awful, fuzzy thing from earlier.)

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I seriously don’t think anyone can wear Peter Pilotto well because most of his stuff is hideous. That said, I find this one least offensive. I don’t even mind the strangeness of the bodice. But the flounce has got to go…if they’d just left it off I’d call this dress chic. Hideously loud, but chic.

  • StillGary

I kind of love everything above the waste , but then the disjointed graphic and a-sym hemline are weird. Like the shoes though, c’mon, let’s give her a pass — she just lost ‘er sister!

  • pookiesmom

I LOVE this, actually. The backdrop is unfortunate, though. Girl, That Is Not Your Backdrop.

  • bascom hogue

Jesus tits, that is a bad look

  • I hate this dress, and the shoes certainly don’t help.

  • spititout

the face on her dress is sticking its tongue out at us1

  • nannypoo

Ugly dress, and she knows it. That’s why she’s posing like she’s in front of a firing squad.

  • shnaggi

Rorschach test score on this dress = Seriously disturbed design positioning over the lady space – Oy Vey, I’m clutching my pearls and reaching for the paper bag simultaneously. Heinous

  • RzYoung

I really like the neckline and the fish tail hem, they give it interest as does the pattern

  • Tamara Hogan

One thing – ok, maybe the only thing – I like about this dress? It disguises her hipbones.

  • SapphoPoet

I kinda like the dress, but it’s wearing her–that dress needs a much more aggressive person wearing it–KStew, perhaps. Agree the shoes are terrible. I also don’t like her lipstick.

  • Sadly, TLo, if you were here lady’s maid Anna, you would not have been able to warn her about this dress, as you would have been too busy scraping pie dough from under Vera Bate’s dead, cold nails.  Which probably explains this dress.

  • That is a dress for a cocktail party – with a few martinis it will look better.

  • Le_Sigh

Oy vey.  This needs an Eva Mendes to pull it off.  Our Lady Mary, bless, she does not have the sass to pull this one off.

  • I did think it was an interesting neckline for her.  That’s about it.

  • Sara LaBatt

I don’t know, I actually sort of like it.  I’d like it better if you removed the flouncy bottom and the halter/underarm straps, and probably with a belt.  But it’s interesting and I like interesting.  Also black shoes would be better, maybe a simple sandal.  Lipstick color I don’t love but the rest of the makeup and hair looks nice, and her eye color is very pretty.

  • Cathy S

There’s no doubt that the shoes are bad and the model looks better in the dress than she does, but what a cool dress that is.

  • Alyssa

To me, the top part looks like an apron. I like the print on it though, and her makeup is very pretty (although matchy!).

  • Something wrong with the fit… and the backdrop did not help either.

  • librarygrrl64

I have yet to see any of his pieces that I like on anyone.

  • Oh, no, another graphic print nightmare.

  • lrhoff

Oh it’s not that bad.  Not my first choice, but it isn’t a total disaster.
