Coat Porn: Michele Obama in Thom Browne

Posted on January 21, 2013

Since this is the gayest inauguration in the history of the country (“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law” was a fist-pump, FUCK YEAH of a moment), let’s indulge in that grand gay tradition of oohing and ahhing over someone else’s clothes.

In this case, it’s coat porn for the ladies:

U.S. President Barack Obama is sworn in during the public ceremonial inauguration on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC.

Michelle Obama wears a Thom Browne coat accessorized with a J. Crew belt and gloves and Reed Krakoff boots.

THAT. Is simply STUNNING. What a gorgeous coat. The belt is to die for and we love the pop of raspberry with the gloves. Beautifully done, FLO.

And because the little Obama ladies are growing up right in front of our eyes, Sasha and Malia displayed rather enviable (for the grownups) coats themselves:

Sasha Obama wears a Kate Spade coat  and Malia Obama wears a J.Crew coat.

Just gorgeous.

We realize we say this every time we mention her, but my god, Malia is a CLONE.

Michelle didn’t have the belt on at the church, and it looked so much better then.  This great coat doesn’t need it…it has beautiful vertical lines.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

I really liked the belt!  Even though she over-does the belt-thing too much, this time I thought it was lovely.

    • miagain

I noticed that too, but I think it looks great both ways!

    • formerlyAnon

I think the belt was in part for impact-at-distance. She didn’t want to pull focus off the persons being sworn in, but it wasn’t a bright coat and you want viewers to be able to pick out the First Lady.

  • The boy behind them certainly seemed impressed by the Obama girls!

FLOTUS looks amazing. That coat is stunning.

    • pattyw

The boy behind them is their cousin — the son of Michelle’s brother Craig.

      • I love his high-top fade!

        • AthenaJ

Same here, I have a sudden urge to watch A Different World right now!

          • TVKimmy

Ha! He just needs some flip glasses!

      • vandeventer

Ooh I can see the resemblance – he’s got the same great smile that Michelle has!

      • GorgeousThings

Ah, I didn’t see this before I posted my question. Thanks for that!

      •  Ah, thank you.

  • bethannstamps

gorge. stunning, classic yet has a edge that is modern. all beautiful.

    • TVKimmy

I thought the belt added that edge, and a wee bit of the boots. Loved it.

      • Introspective

Tried in vain to get the belt from J Crew online. Alas its sold out. The coat and boots had me gay gasping and shrieking literally ALL DAY.

Shelly SHUT IT DOWN today. And looks gorgeous tonight in the Jason Wu as well. She’s made fashion history. And shes my hero!!!!

  • I love the way Malia and Michelle’s gloves tone.

    • megohd

I was thinking maybe they traded gloves at the last minute!

  • yulaffin

The Obama ladies are all gorgeous.

  • BuckeyeLou

Such a beautiful family!  They represent our Nation well…so lovely, so poised.  The girls’ coats were a beautiful pop of color on a grey day and Mrs. Obama looked Fabulous!

    • ANd loved that they wore purple, which is made from blue AND red!

  • Inspector_Gidget

Love it.  Makes me even sort of not hate the new hair, unlike the other getups.

  • Tashina Savage

God, I want all three of those coats. Especially Michele’s. TO DIE FOR!

  • AuntieAnonny

It was a very quick glimpse when they were leaving the church, but you could see that Malia was wearing something that was the same color as her gloves. It looked so awesome.

    • gabbilevy

She took her coat off during the parade (the presidential reviewing platform was heated) so you can see it there. It’s a lovely, brilliant blue that looks fabulous with her coloring.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The Thom Browne coat is DROOL WORTHY. GIMME. Malia and Sasha’s shades of purple were surprisingly, perfectly complementary.

I am beyond words about the awesomeness of Obama’s inaugural speech.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

They looked very dignified and wonderful.  Regardless of anyone’s politics (like the president or not), class and dignity ALWAYS deserve appreciation!

They are doing a wonderful job teaching those girls how to dress, as well.  Can you imagine if they’d shown up dressed sloppily and (therefore) disrespectfully?  I’m so proud of ALL of them.  Their appearance shows respect for their position and for all of us as Americans.  Bravo.

  • I really like the way Michelle’s gloves called to the colors of her daughters’ coats. Very nice. They are an enviably lovely family.

    • Snailstsichr

I am just in love with her gloves! I believe there are leather gloves in my future.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

That may actually be the best I’ve ever seen her.  That fabric, that pattern, that silhouette — with or without the belt — it’s all amazing.  I loved the Isabel Toledo she wore in 2009, but this seemed cleaner, less fussy.  I gasped when I saw it.

And when talking about the gayest inauguration ever, POTUS also name-checked Stonewall and Richard Blanco is the first openly gay poet to do the Inaugural Poem.  A very good day — now I want to see FLOTUS at the ball tonight!

  • Those colors are so flattering to Malia and Sasha.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Beautiful family.  Beautiful clothes.  To think we almost had to look at a bunch of guys in white shirts for the next four years.

    • Hello…my name is Elder Romney….and I would like to share with you this most amazing book!

    •  White shirts, black ties, and celestial underwear.

  • ConnieBV

A clone of which? I swear, I can’t see either parent in that child.

    • MilaXX

To me Malia looks like Shelly and Sasha looks like the pres.

      • ConnieBV

I see Obama in his eldest for sure, but  her vibe is pure Shelly O. The youngest does… I guess. I’ll have to picture her with bangs.

        • fursa_saida

Yeah, I feel like if I just block out Malia’s hair and squint a little she is almost the spitting image of her father, but with Michelle’s mouth.

      • I think Sasha’s the spitting image of Mrs. Robinson, actually. It’s like Barack barely had a hand in their creation. Clearly, the Robinsons are a matriarchal line.

        •  Exactly. Malia=Michelle 2.0 in face and body type and Sasha is totally Granny Robinson – short and cute as a button.

        • MilaXX

I just looked back at the pictures . You are right about those Robinson genes, the first cousins could pass for Malia & Sasha’s siblings.

        • rumcg66

I agree that Sasha looks JUST like her grandmother, but I think Malia looks more like her father, especially in the overall shape of her face, and strong chin. She’s just so beautiful.

        • ampg

Look at some old pictures of Ann Dunham – it’s Sasha with different hair.

  • Chaiaiai

Those Obama misses are so adorable.  They were SO little at the last inauguration.

I LOVE that Uncle Craig is wearing Orange and Black!  Go Beavs!

    • Julie Parr

His orange and black might have also been for Princeton, where he went — or, possibly both.

    • gabbilevy

Katy Perry was wearing orange and black, too… and she accessorized poorly with John Mayer.

    • Craig and Michelle are both Princeton grads, so the scarf could swing either way.

      • Chaiaiai

Do people actually wear their undergraduate colors anywhere?  I’ve never seen this and I went to a pretty poncey school.  I just assumed Coach Craig was giving the Beavs a shout out since they are on a losing streak AND he is missing a game.

        • libraangel

Yeah, I know about giving a shout out and all, but as I said before, a football scarf at a presidential inauguartion – come on, please! NO

  • Anabag

In this picture where she was heading to the church service she wasn’t wearing her boots.  She must have been freezing.  The boots look great and the whole ensemble looks very polished.

  • vandeventer

I’m thinking Shelley looks very cute here with her new cut – with this ensemble in particular, it’s all working together and she looks great!  Still liked her old ‘do better tho.

  • imakeart

    Completely stunning.  And those boots…omg.

    • nancymae

Aren’t those the same boots she’s worn several times before? If so, this is definitely their best outing.

  • vandeventer

Loving Michelle’s gloves too. How’s that for your pop of color –  Bam!

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I bought a pair of gloves in exactly that color off a Coach clearance table a few years ago and never have known what to wear them with … now I know I just need to get that Thom Browne coat.

  • kschwarting

I have Malia’s coat, but in burgundy!  It’s a J. Crew coat–I think it’s called the Lady Day.

    • formerlyAnon

I predict that after this week it will be unavailable for months. I prefer Sasha’s coat (Kate Spade) because I love that full skirt on it.

      • Sasha is so cute that I want to adopt her for a week.

      • kschwarting

I actually looked after seeing this post–the sale colors are gone, and what’s left is a little limited.  You’re totally right.

  • alyce1213

I am so proud of our first family.  They are remarkable.
FLOTUS in her Thom Browne coat is a fashion moment for the ages.
I love that the girls wore shades of purple (unity of blue + red).
    Their accessories were all perfect.

I heard that designers whose clothes are worn at events like this get about $14 million worth of free publicity (how that figure is calculated, I don’t know).  But good for Thom Browne!  I imagine the thousands who are Googling him today may be stunned by his avant garde collections.  He does make gorgeous menswear — Michelle’s coat is based on a men’s necktie fabric.

Altogether, a sartorially and politically good morning.

“. . . our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts.”

    •  It’s based on ratecard equivalents. I haven’t spent enough time around comms people to learn how they are calculated, but since you know how much it costs to advertise in various publications you can figure out how much free editorial coverage is worth. Wow, I am so glad I posted this!

    • libraangel

       Bravo to your last sentence!

  • They wore different shoes for church as well, the girls had cute flats which were tones of purple, and Michelle had some heels on. I still have not managed to work out if all 3 changed into boots for the ceremony but I am pretty sure Malia did, just difficult to catch a glimpse of it in that crowd.

I can’t get enough of looking at the three of them, they are so beautiful.

    • libraangel

I liked that the girls wore matching tights (to heir coats)

      • Colored tights were  popular in the 70th. I still have some.LOL.

  • Mrs. Robinson looks pretty spiffy, too.

I suspect the belt has a lot to do with the FLOTUS having another layer under that (oh, my, do I want it) coat and belting it up to keep from looking puffy.

  • MK03

I always thought Malia looked more like her dad. Well, shut my mouth. She IS a Shelley clone here.

  • Gorgeous!

  • MilaXX

Malia has grown into a gorgeous young lady right before our eyes. What a beautiful first fam.

  • UglyTalents

The Obama ladies were especially stunning today. FLOTUS is a knockout. The girls are following in her footsteps.

  • gorgeous. the raspberry gloves were an inspired choice.

  • librarygrrl64

I love the color-coordination among all of the Obama ladies. Well done. 🙂

  • SapphoPoet

Beautiful. The whole family looked good, including Michelle’s mother–loved the peach shade on her.

  • Snailstsichr

Richard Blanco, the poet who delivered the inauguration poem is the first openly gay poet * to be invited to read a poem at the inauguration. And to make this clothing related, he used the word stitch (as in stitch uniforms) in the poem. As a poetry fangirl, I just squeed at that line.

    * to be honest, I didn’t fact check this.

    • formerlyAnon

Fear not. There have only been five poets reading their work at inaugurations: Robert Frost (Kennedy), May Angelou (Clinton), Miller Williams (Clinton), Elizabeth (Obama) and now Blanco.

He’s also the first Hispanic poet.

      • LearnedFoot

Oh, how I loved that Maya Angelou poem. Even now, just recalling that “Good morning” in her powerful voice gives me chills.

        • formerlyAnon

Pointless anecdote: Maya Angelou and my mother used to shop in the same grocery store (Harris Teeter.) Not in far distant years, but within the last decade.

  • Katherine Goodman

The Obama ladies all look smashing.  I would like one of each of those coats (especially Malia’s — I love that shade of purple)!

The Obamas are such a lovely family, and I am so very happy that they will be in the White House for another four years.

  • Cathy S

Give me ALL the coats, and no one gets hurt.

  • nancymae

I love how each Obama had their distinctive look… not too complicated or overthought (just ignore the scurrying minions behind the scenes) yet perfectly done and coordinated with each other family member. The girls coats, POTUS’ tie, Michelle’s gloves… it was all wonderful.

  • mjude

LOVE Flo’s coat…want.  those daughters are just adorable, how can you not love?

  • nancymae

Related random question… what did everyone think about Jill Biden’s and Nancy Pelosi’s looks? Both seem to have taken a page from the Shelley O style guide to bows and color. They looked good.

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t actually like big bows, pretty much anywhere, but I think Ms. Biden pulled it off. And it was a clever way to make an impact without breaking the monochromatic coat – successfully festive, appropriately serious, and not pulling too much focus.

I liked Pelosi’s coat better. I think the red was pretty bold, considering the occasion and her place on/near the podium, but she wears a lot of red and looks good in it.

    • BrooklynBomber

Didn’t see Pelosi, and all I noticed about Biden was the damn bangs. Ix-nay!

      • libraangel

        I kinda like Jill’s hair.

        • She is a pretty Lady and her hair looked very youthful.
Why do people hate bangs so much.?

    • libraangel

I LOVE Nancy Pelosi’s looks always. Loved the red coat. Jill Biden – eh, o.k.

      • My husband thought that Nancy Pelosi is quite a “busty” Lady.

  • GorgeousThings

What a gorgeous family! Who is the handsome young fella sitting behind them? I noticed Malia was talking with him lots before all the VIPs started processing in.

    • formerlyAnon

A cousin, one of the commentators said.

      • libraangel

And does anyone know who the dressed-up elderly lady (even hat!) who followed Michelle down the stairs to the podium is? Just curious.

  • formerlyAnon

And, as Snailstsichr noted above, the first openly gay and first Hispanic poet to read at an inauguration, Richard Blanco. There are some interesting interviews with him (one from a PBS news show, one that aired on one of the old big 3 networks, not sure which) floating around the Internet.

I think Ms. Obama KILLED IT.  The girls looked great, very appropriate and camera-friendly. This group does put in the nuts-and-bolts work.

    • libraangel

Yes, Mrs. Robinson looked pretty spectacular herself.

  • Reneesance

I LOVE that coat, and the belt, and the gloves. All of it looks fab!

  • Dem leather boots! What a stylish family!

  • semirose

All 3 of those coats (and the ladies wearing them!) are so gorgeous. I’m trying so hard to convince myself not to buy Mailias coat since they only have my size in that colour in petite and I’ll be so sad when it comes and doesnt fit my boobs. I might even win (but only if it sells out before I get home from work)

    • kschwarting

      J. Crew has been making that coat for several years–you might try ebay to see if there’s one your size.

  • unbornfawn

The coats are fantastic, but, I’m coveting those purple leather gloves. They all look fabulous! What a proud day.

  • punchycats

    What a gorgeous family!

  • Winter_White

I LOVE the ‘color story’ here.  All three coats, all of their accessories – just glorious.  I like Michelle’s coat without the belt better…the structure is so crisp and formal, yet you want to touch that beautiful fabric.

  • I’m not sure I like Michelle’s new bangs, but the coat is a triumph.  I also like the fact that she wore gloves in a color that referenced Malia’s coat.  I can’t tell if Michelle’s coat is blue, gray, or purple, but if it is purple, I wonder if the First Ladies all wearing a variation of purple was a subtle visual reinforcement of the idea that the nation is neither red nor blue, but somewhere in between.

  • guest2visits

All pretty coats and gloves… but i love Michelle’s; great coat, boots, belt… Still not sold on the bangs, but not terrible.

  • berkeleygirl

    Why no First Mother-in-Law???

  • Tom Shea

Does anybody know for sure whether Craig Robinson is repping Princeton or Oregon State with the orange-and-black scarf? Where he went to school or where he works? I wondered the same thing back in 2009.

    • libraangel

Actually, didn’t like that ; a football scarf at an INAUGURATION?! ‘what will that look like in the historical photos of the future?!

  • i love them all so hard.

  • fursa_saida

For some reason, my first thought seeing Michelle’s outfit was armor. I want to see her fight it out with Brienne of Tarth in this getup. And I mean this in the most complementary way possible.

  • Stubenville

Why is FLOTUS dressed as a Dalek?

    • formerlyAnon

Shhh! Lord knows what the rumor mill would make of it if the White House’s fandom got out.

  • Stubenville

BTW, the kids are in J. Crew (Malia) and Kate Spade (Sasha.)

  • Laylalola

Are there Shelley, Malia, and Sasha fashion dress-up dolls for little girls I wonder?

  • BrooklynBomber

I love the Tom Brown coat, and for once she got it right with the boots! A great look (helmut hair notwithstanding).

    •  I assure you, that hair is decidedly not German. You must be thinking “helmet hair”.

      • BrooklynBomber

Hah! Danke for catching the typo!

  • BrooklynBomber

But what’s with all the purples?

    • Laylalola

Someone suggested it’s a mix of red and blue, but honestly, it’s the color purple.

      • BrooklynBomber

Oh, that’s right. I think last time Mrs. O wore something purple, didn’t she?? (It’s ringing a bell.)  I have a fear of purple coats, though the girls are young enough to get away with them.

      • Tom Shea

         How God do that?

        • Laylalola

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.”
― Alice Walker, The Color Purple

    • it represents power!

  • Absolutely gorgeous.

Winter and I would get along so much better if I could just find a coat that doesn’t make me look like the stay puft marshmallow man.

  • VeryClaire

Gorgeous across the board. (and glad they didn’t all try to match each other).

  • okay, finally I understand why  McCall’s 70s coat patterns are so popular now.

  • Fordzo

    I love Malia’s cowl/scarf, too.

  • Is it possible for an entire family to receive a WERQ? Is that unprecedented or somehow taboo? Because they all look fabulous.

  • stoprobbers

Flat Top Kid!! Don’t forget Flat Top Kid in the pics with the girls! Flat Top Kid is gonna be the meme of the 2013 inauguration with that fly hair and all that excitement.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I want Michelle’s coat.  End of story.

  • ellabob

    Love love love….

  •  The Obama ladies really do look lovely. Too bad we couldn’t get a better look of Grandma’s ensemble.

  • e jerry powell

It’s out PATRIOTIC DUTY to talk about other’s outfits!

  • siriuslover

They all three looked divine. Loved watching them come down the steps this morning. I want those coats. Any one of them will do.

  • akprincess72

I LOVE the girl’s coats, but am not a fan of the belt over Michelle’s.

  • All three of those coats are gorgeous! The colors of the Sasha and Malia’s coats are fantastic!

  • EEKstl

FLO nailed it.  Stunning.  Love the gloves, love the bangs, love everything.  The girls were also totally stunning as well.  What a gorgeous family.

  • And check out Dr. Jill Biden’s coat too!  With the sassy mock bow on the left top collar!

    • TRSTL

I loved Dr. Bidens coat as well but it seemed the closures (buttons? Snaps?) were pulling and ruining the lines as she was walking in the return to the WH.

  • Martha Deutsch

Purple the overwhelming color palette for the first family – seems significant. (Ie red + blue)

  • for me its a WERQ piece

  • editrixie

I cannot get over the fact that we have a first lady who is wearing a Thom Browne coat and fuckin’ Reed Krakoff boots!! That is some fashion forwarding first lady shenanigans right there!

  • julnyes

I like the belt and oddly enough I like MO’s bangs better in these pics

  • Such a happy day.

    • libraangel

This has nothing to do with anything, but I posted this previously on the wrong blog. I don’t remember Kelly Clarkson’s outfit (but that singing! I agree with Sen. Schumer – WOW!) so I can’t comment on that , but I know everyone will know my age now, but to see James Taylor in a very conservative tie & suit, to use a 60’s/70’s term: “blew my mind”. I remember Sweet Baby James as a hippy protester, pothead (no criticism intended! I looked the same!) How times have changed! As a matter of fact, back in the early 70’s, I would have said he was selling out if I saw the future him, if you know what I mean!
p.s. What did everyone think of Kelly’s outfit, BTW?

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Loved all the coats, especially Grandmama’s!

  • “Since this is the gayest inauguration in the history of the country”… great line!

  • CeeQ

The coats are gorgeous and those colours were wonderful =)  I am coveting that belt on FLO.
    Well done Obama Gals!

  • libraangel

Beautiful – perfect- stunning -all three. Malia could be a model

    • Coco Cornejo

Malia could be a model. But did you see what Sasha did the minute she got to her seat in the parade review stand? She took off her coat to reveal the lovely purple striped dress she’s wearing perfectly Sanforized with a faux stone necklace. That young lady is truly a fashionista in training.

Also loved that Malia totally photo bombed her sister when she tried to get a photo of their parents kissing.

Okay, seeing the Obama girls acting like normal teenagers was totally a SQUEE moment for me.

    • Libra angel you are everywhere! i agree with you, they are a beautiful family!(unterderlaterne)

      • libraangel

Yes, I am everywhere. Guess I have too much time in my day ( not really! HA HA) ! And we seem to have the same taste, gentille/udl !

        • You got it. we are lucky.

Are you really not watching the new PR season?
I will for  ein kleines bisschen, weil ich so neugierig bin.
The 23 yr.old young woman has good taste (her outfit) I forgot her name. It is Kathleene(spelled wrong)

  • SugarSnap108

That coat is absolutely gorgeous.  And with the boots and the gloves, she is rocking the hale out of it.  Still not loving her bangs, though.

  • GretaChristina

ZOMLOG, want want want want want! Please, FSM, make an affordable version of this appear in stores, now please!

I realize that 867,984,376 other women are thinking exactly the same thing right now. I don’t even care. WANT!

  • They are just beautiful. This is reminding me of watching the Kennedys together (dating myself there) — What’s she wearing? What’s she wearing?

  • The photo of just the First Lady is STUNNING!  I think it may become an iconic image that goes into history.

  • Qitkat

Those colors are just a feast for my eyes.

  • Trisha26

Very pretty – all three are gorgeous. (even with the bangs)

  • Le_Sigh

Three snaps!  One for each of them!  I love the coordinating purple / raspberry tones.  This may be one of my top Shelly-O looks.

    • libraangel

Wow! I love the nickname ‘Shelly O’  – Cool!

      • Le_Sigh

So not me – I must give full credit to our fabulous T and Lo!

  • gabbilevy

The boots were FABULOUS. (So were Jill Biden’s. And Jill’s coat.)

    • DesertDweller79

I really liked Dr. Biden’s shiny grey coat.

  • MzzPants

If the haircut was for this look alone, then ‘BRAVO’.  Final judgement will have to wait until it’s proven with a number of looks and variation.

    • libraangel

I love the bangs: does everyone else?

  • NEED The coat and the girls look lovely too!!

  • melizer

Did she change out of the Reed Krakoff boots for the parade?

  • TSkot

She looks great either way, but I much preferred Michelle’s coat without the belt.

  • MaryanneGirl

Mrs. Obama looks absolutely FANTASTIC.  Couldn’t say it any better than you did, Tom & Lorenzo, and the ladies look absolutely beautiful.  I just adore this family.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love the Thom Browne coat, and the pop of color with those gloves was just right!

  • Love the raspberry gloves, love all the coats, I even love the grandma’s beige coat with orange scarf combo! Class all around! Rock on, Shelly-O!

  • TVKimmy

I love them, but we seem to be in the minority. 🙂 I think she looks years younger. Not that she needed it, but who doesn’t want to look younger and fresher?

  • kategs

I like the red and blue makes purple bit going on.  And I will say it again, I love Flotus new do.  perfecto.

  • quiltrx

The Obama ladies hit the fab-coat trifecta!!!  Love them all, but especially Michelle’s SO much.  And those gloves are killer and the perfect accent.

(and an aside from the background…who else is happy to see the ‘high fade’ making a comeback?)

  • How did Calvin from 227 rate a seat behind the Obamas?

  • Pennymac

I have those gloves! I have those gloves!  My son calls me the “Jokers Henchman” when I wear them, but I got them before Christmas. Does that make me in with the in crowd? Do I get a prize? Am I finally, finally fashionable?? Yay me!

FLOTUS and the FDOTUS are Uber awesome in these pics. (I DO realize that it’s not about me.)

  • Love love love the coats but Sasha and Shelly need to trade hair.

Although I do wish a girl that young would keep her hair natural.  I know, I know, the racists of America would have a field day if they dared, hair is a personal choice, blah blah, but still.  I am firmly a “No Chemicals No Makeup No Shaving until you’re 13” kinda old fashioned gal.  There’s nothing more grating than a little girl in make-up that does not consist of colored chalk and glitter.

I feel that way about most of the baby starlettes too.  It’s why I love Kiernan Shipka, she looks like a young girl and knows that is what is appropriate.  And she only knows this because her parents are sane.

I agree because Malia is only 14 and she is getting her hair straightened? Plus I don’t think it is good for the hair. But Malia is so beautiful – like a model

  • That is one gorgeous family! Michelle is absolute perfection. And not for nothing, but she just makes me feel so proud! It also makes me laugh to remember back during their first campaign when the right wing media was screaming about how Michelle was a liability. She could not possibly be anymore the opposite of that!

  • It’s a gorgeous coat, but forget the coat.. LOVE the gloves!

  • DesertDweller79

Fuck yeah, Michelle Obama!  That coat is stunning!  It is stunning with or without that belt.  Love the gloves.  Love the boots.  This is just a fantastic look all around.  You go, FLOTUS!

Love the coats in shades of purple on the girls, too.  They looked great!  Malia looks more and more like her mother every day.  She is also fabulously tall!  I am so envious!

  • DesertDweller79

Oh, and also, you go, Thom Browne! Thanks so much for this!

  • Me: “I love her belt”
Husband: “She looks like an officer on the Death Star”

  • Would have rather seen them wearing coats from JC Penney!

  • Wow. That man has three chic ladies in his house. I just love what all of them are wearing and it is so clear that the three of them talk about clothes and their accessories together. The scarves, the pop of color gloves. I love our first family.

Hi guys – do you know whose coat Malia is wearing? Coat porn, indeed!

      J. Crew, Lady Day coat, $298 retail

  • Judy_J

    Gorgeous, gorgeous, and gorgeous!

  • poggi

I love how coordinated the whole family looks from tie to coats to gloves.  They each look great, individually and when they stand together.

  • tmchale

The coat flares out too much at the bottom, but yeah, it’s almost perfection. Nice to see something unconventional.

  • ccm800

Say what you will if you gotta…but we have one GOOD LOOKING first family!

  • KatieSoukup

yes love the gloves.  just one hint of color (since is this is the gayest inaug!).  And the boots are to DIE for.  How about Dr. Jill and her kick ass pumps?  She’s a bit of a hottie too.  But we are all-Biden in DE you know.

  • Alyssa Stanfield

I love FLOTUS’s gloves, and little Sasha’s coat!

  • Something about her hair and this get-up makes me think of Willie Wonka. All she needs is those big round sunglasses.
The coat and the gloves and the belt, are all extreme knock-outs. Super impressed. LOVE her in this. Spectacular.
