Lea Michele in Lisa Ho

Posted on January 09, 2013

We’re going to be nice this time. We swear.

Lea attends the 2013 TCA Winter Press Tour – FOX All-Star Party in a Lisa Ho ensemble paired up with Christian Louboutin pumps and Jennifer Meyer jewelry.

And believe us, we’d like nothing more than to say “Of course,” but this isn’t an “Of course” moment. In fact, we’d almost believe this is a “Lea FINALLY listened to T Lo” moment. Because we’ve been telling her for years that “quirky n’ cute” is more suited to her than “ducklipped femme fatale.” And this outfit is definitely quirky n’ cute.

Of course we’re still going to be bitches and critique it.

Everything above the waist is fine. We’re not sure we would’ve recommended a white cami to go with that jacket, but that’s a minor quibble. But here’s the thing: we like this bright yellow on her and we really like the jacket but man, do we not like that skirt. The elastic waistband looks tacky and cheap to us and the whole thing sits way too high on her, obliterating her waist. We also don’t think those shoes, fabulous though they are, don’t really do much for the outfit. A print top, like the one the model is wearing would’ve been great, and then some sort of complementary-colored skirt or pair of pants would have made this just about perfect.

But Lea! We’re totally behind this new look for you! Keep it up, girl, and 2013 may just be the year that T Lo finally stops ragging on you, doll!

  • I think I made that skirt in 8th grade Home Ec.

    • AceOn6

Made mine in 7th. I chose a better fabric.

    • So funny. I was just about to type the same thing when I saw your comment first!

    • Jackie Lorden

      Me too!

    • alyce1213

I made exactly that jacket (and a slim skirt) in leopard pinwale corduroy for my Revlon doll (ca 6th grade).

      • Leopard pinwale corduroy! Delicious.

        • alyce1213

It was! Excellent goods.  I used remnants from a costume my mother made for me — Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.

          • Holy crap! I loved that movie! I still say “zam-zam berries, what else would a woman use?” when someone tells me my hair smells good. I have checked, and it’s not available on DVD, but I watched the shiz out of it on HBO when I was a kid.

          • sk8tfan

oooh, now I wish you’d make a little leopard outfit for my fashion doll! Way cute.

    • bpayne

Evidently a lot of us took Home Ec. I was going to say I made that skirt in 7th grade, but mine (although yellow) actually had a waistband and a zipper 🙂

      • YoungSally

My mom made me take shop — it was the first year that girls could take shop.

That said, it’s no longer home ec…it’s “family and consumer science”

    • Took the words right out of my mouth

    • Tammy_4

Yep, that’s the Home Ec project we all got a C on.

    •  Hells bells you don’t even need a pattern for that kind of skirt! But  you all probably know that, right?! A girl that age should steer clear of elastic waist skirts.  But for me?  De rigueur.

    • StellaZafella

Vogue easy sew pattern 4870: “Cheerleader Intern” version B: With slightly Chanel cut jacket.

  • MoHub

The elastic waistband on the skirt almost gives it a Coldwater Creek look. A belt over the waistband would have made all the difference.

    • COLDWATER CREEK!  Pure summer sunlight is captured in these fun and flirty separates. Surprise your winter brunch date with a drop of July in January. Young and loose, the jacket evokes the matadors of Pamploma mixed with the girl next door.  Slip into the forgiving elastic waist of the charming skirt and have your fill of blueberry pancakes at the buffet!

      • MoHub

         You, my dear, are brilliant!

      • Carly Warnock

Just like a J. Peterman catalogue description right here!

        • MoHub

Peterman is far more imaginative and literate.

      • moppet

I regret that I have but one “like” to give to this post.

    • I’m getting more of a “No Boundaries” feel myself.

    • Adriana_Paula

Yes, good grief: my kingdom for a belt.

  • myangelic1

The fact that that awful skirt lists at $400 is practically a crime against humanity.  It looks like a 1st quarter home ec piece.

    • GorgeousThings

No, I would send my students back to their desks with a seam ripper if they presented that to me. The hem is too deep, the waistband elastic is too wide, the blindstitching at the hem is anything but. And $400? My dad would have called that “More money than brains.”

      • And that is the SALE price!!!

  • lehen

ew.  it doesn’t matter what she wears – she will always bug me.

  • Not perfect, but it is a cute look – and the skirt is long enough to avoid skanksville.

    • sk8tfan

She’d have actually looked cute in the original striped pants with that, rather than the Goodwill reject skirt. I agree with TLo (of course, I’d be booted off the page if I didn’t)  I like the trend on her though-she should go for this type of quirky cute, rather than her ridiculous efforts at femme fatale.

  • kimmeister

Jennifer Meyer jewelry?  You mean that one tiny ring?

I do love the shoes though, just not with that getup.

  • JulieTy

I hate to disagree, but I think she looks tacky tacky and tacky. The hair is a mess and her skin is ORANGE. Even though you didn’t ask, I give it an OUT. (I still love you, though).

    • SorayaS

Yeah the fake tan is so overwhelmingly bad- she doesn’t deserve any compliments for stepping out of the house like that! And those shoes are awful.

  • RocknRollmom

The skirt looks like something I failed at making in 8th Grade home ec.  Really cheap looking.  Doesn’t even really look like it goes with the jacket.  And unless one is 85 with severe arthritis that prevents zippers or buttons, no elastic waists like that.  Really cheesy.  I would kill for those shoes.  Seriously, who do I kill?  Even with the plastic part which I normally hate.  Otherwise, I completely agree with the esteemed TLo as to Ms. Michele’s look!

  • Aww, sharing the love for Lea…

  • SOOOOO much better! It’s refreshing to see her not doing “sexy sexy” all. The. Time.

  • The skirt looks like a high-school home-ec project gone very wrong.

    • MoHub

       Junior high.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Meh.  It is better than what she usually wears, but what really annoys me is twee posing – leg bent kind of thing.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, the posing is a little too cute with the faux shy shoulder shrug and collapsed neck.

  • Le_Sigh

Progress!!!  That skirt waist is tragic, but am digging that she’s grinning and fresh and not giving us so much Try.

  • jilly_d

    LURV those shoes.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

YES!  This is the adorable, goofy, silly girl who pretend heterosexual me would be into.  If I said the best she’s ever looked was in the red dress from the “Kiki” scene in the not-horrifying thanksgiving episode, I would be admitting that I sometimes still watch Glee.  But I won’t and so I won’t.

  • Introspective

the shoes definitely do not work with the outfit. the elastic waistband is pure damnation. a more interesting blouse underneath is called for. maybe one that could hide that waistband.

while not an “of course,” which is good for her, the devil still lurks in the details of this look. overall a meh for me.

  • Sobaika

Soooo shiny. But I’m pleased that we aren’t enduring the forced and belabored SEXY FIERCE LEA treatment.

  • For heaven’s sake woman, it’s JANUARY. That is not a January outfit. Nice to see Lisa Ho is still working, I’d thought she disappeared.

  • Her legs look like a fairy puked fairy dust all over them.  Did she use an entire bottle of shimmer on each limb?

  • ralish

Ugly bridesmaid dress, cut in two. I do like her move towards “quirky and cute” though! Next time, the clothes should actually be, you know, cute.

    • AthenaJ

I was just thinking that color and fabric look like they came from David’s Bridal

  • Cindy Claussen

What would Kors say? Becky-Homeckky! The elastic waist and seams are so cheap looking

    • Barbara Woodruff

Or as Tim would say, “It’s very ‘happy hands at home'”

  • kipper

I think it is sweet that she makes her own cloths

  • lrhg

That skirt looks like she put on a deflated mylar balloon.

  • SewingSiren

I like the color. But tunneled elastic waistbands on with the top tucked in. Yuckyness.

  • HobbitGirl

I’m always suspicious of miniskirts that flounce out like that. Skirts that short have got to be more fitted if you don’t want the whole world to know what your undies look like any time there’s a breeze.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Actually, I think Lea would probably enjoy that.

  • She’s one of the lucky few that can wear that color. I’m pretty damn jealous.

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s not femme fatale, for sure, but it’s trying very very hard to be California Girl Goes Business, not very successfully. Also, she is absolutely slathered with bronzer and shimmer and the whole pose is about as forced as her femme fatale blue steels.

She could try more, is what I’m saying.

  • decormaven

    Pinterest braid.

  • alyce1213

The only things I like in this post are what she’s not wearing, namely the striped blouse and print trousers.
To me, she looks ridiculous as usual — from her fake shimmery tan, the cheesy grin on her face, to the twee pose — “ooh! I’m so cute” (shrugs shoulder).
I just can’t take her. And this is a home ec outfit.

  • But T Lo! I only click on your lea Michele posts to see you say OF COURSE!

  • Take off the jacket and strap on your skates…the Ice Follies are in town!

  • I’ve never heard of the designer “Lisa Ho” so when I saw the title–Lea Michele in Lisa Ho–I honestly thought for a second it was a joke.
Color is great, skirt is WTF tacky.  Would love to have seen her in the graphic slacks in the designer photo!

  •  it looks like one of Mom’s sewing projects.  patterns from “simplicities” or “McCall’s”, fabric from Fabric.com.

  • another_laura

I get that it’s not an “of course” outfit, but not even for the – I’m guessing – Teen Choice Awards Winter Press Tour (which is kind of a depressing thought, that there is a press tour for this event) should she be wearing a cheesy bodysuit thing with an elastic waistband skirt and jacket.

It’s looks so awfully chip.  Chip in a chip way.

  • Of course…

  • I wish she would have worn those awesomely crazy pants but I still think she looks cute.

  • foxy711711

i’m not really sure how, but that shirt/jacket combo is making her look really flat on top from many angles, especially the side photo…we are all clearly aware from previous “of course” posts and that quote from her about how much she loves her breasts that she is not THAT flat.  Optical illusion?

    • RebeccaKW

I’m wondering if it’s lack of support.  Like b/c the top is so sheer and low-cut, she opted not to wear a bra.  Look at the first photo, with her hand on her hip.  You can see the breast shape in the top, but it’s kind of pointing off to the left.  That sounds terrible, but you know what I mean.  My girls droop a bit and point off to the sides when released and gravity takes hold.

  • Lilak

Sorry to disagree, TLo, but I don’t consider the lazy choice of the white “cami” a minor quibble (quotes since that tissue-thin undershirt scarcely qualifies as a named garment): It defuses the whole look.  Seriously, think what kind of top someone with Emma Stone’s taste would’ve worn, and compare.

This isn’t fresh, eye-popping color or some such … the effect (including Miss Lea in it) is just LOUD.

  • Jennifer L.

Yay for no breast/vagina exposure, but STAND UP STRAIGHT GIRL!

  • BeeBeauNYC

Yellow is not her color. Cute hair and makeup though.

  • Dan_In_NYC

It’s saying something if I still notice all the bronzer/self tanner when you are wearing SCREAMING YELLOW.  I agree this is going in the right direction, but she somehow manages to consistently read a little desperate to me.  Indeed, better gays are called for.

  • I was gonna say “BELT!”

  • Judy_J

Sorry….looks like she deliberately pulled the cami as low as possible, and it looks exceedingly awkward.  That skirt looks like a junior high sewing class project.  I will say I like the shoes, but not with this outfit.

  • bluefish

No no no … but I do like the shoes.   Love what the model is wearing though.

  • notterriblybitter

Whoever braided her hair was drunk at the time or did it with their feet. Or possibly both.

  • Snailstsichr

Those shoes would have been cute with the outfit in the 3rd pic.

  • mozzer0906

That skirt looks like a 4 year olds DIY project.  The top underneath looks like an old bathing suit.  I hate the shoes too, they look too small thanks to the illusion netting.  Just an meh all around.

  • DeGuz

Is she wearing bronzer on her feet?

  • Little_Olive

I wonder what they’ll wear (and how tanned they will be) in the summer.

Otherwise, agree with TLo. Also, the jacket is a tad big on her.

  • mhleta

I like the idea of this suit a lot. I love the color on her, I don’t mind the shininess of fabric since it isn’t a) tight or b) wrinkled.  I also appreciate the way it works with other pieces when it’s not being a suit. However, I agree about the waist band. Looks like the work of someone who hasn’t yet taken the Waistband 101 portion of Freshman Sewing. Otherwise, I like the messy braid, the fresh makeup and the white nail polish. Good effort!

  • jw_ny

The waistband was the first thing I saw that I didn’t like..cheap is right.

The rest is ok I guess.  Love her shoes.  Think she should step away from the spray tanning for awhile.

  • VicksieDo

    LOVE those KILLER shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Look quickly, and she looks toe-less in both full-body shots.

  • KatDuck

I love her face, like the messy hair, adore the shoes, and like the concept … but, by all that’s holy, that top and skirt should be burned as an example. They’re both quite literally a My First Sewing Pattern project. The neckline on that jacket should NOT be puckering like it does, especially at whatever price point it’s at. That’s just sloppy. I could forgive the skirt (though it’s the same skirt everyone made for their first pattern) but the way it tips up in back is just sloppy.

  • guest2visits

My God TLo; you were way too kind on this one.  There isn’t anything here that makes sense. Not the pose and not the clothes.

  • Monday1900

Everything but the shoes screams “I flunked Home Ec”.

  • editrixie

It hurts my eyes to look at her. Not because of the brightness of the outfit, because of the searing brightness of her skin.

  • Credit where it’s due:  this is so much better than either the shiny sternum or twee stuff she usually favors.  Yay, progress!

  • Deedles

Remnant sale at the basketball shorts factory? Yikes.

  • luciaphile

What you said, TLo. Also, this is a very summery look for the dead of winter.

  • Lisa Ho-me Economics class, looks like to me.  Bleah.

  • suzq

She should have worn those fabulous pants.  Unfortunately, someone once told her that she has million dollar legs and now, she feels compelled to show them off each and every time she goes out.

  • nannypoo

One of these pictures even shows her face not looking so posed and phoney. I did not know she was capable of relaxing for even a moment in front of a camera.

  • librarygrrl64

THAT SKIRT!!!!! It looks like the first one I made in 7th grade home ec (circa 1978). DISLIKE!!!

ETA: Hahaha! Just saw the other comments in this vein. Great minds and all.

  • Cheap looking skirt, but overall, so she looks much better cute rather than “of course.”

  • The only of course thing is her smile. I don’t know why but I want to smack it off her face. The yellow is nice on her, but only in small doses. Love those shoes.

  • Trisha26

Don’t like the coy hunching pose – but agree it’s pretty good from the waist up (and the shoes).

  • warnerave

a skirt by Lisa HO…no explanation needed LOL

  • MilaXX

I almost like this. Well no, I actually do like this outfit, but with reservations. Lea looks cute here, and I like the face/hair. My main quibble is the skirt makes it look a little young, like some Keirnan Sherpka or Amandla Stenberg would wear. Still she looks fresh faced and not like she’s trying desperately to convince us she’s sexy.

  • T G

And then her people’s choice awards dress happened. And it was clear she hadn’t taken T&Lo’s direction at all.

  • Imasewsure

I would have preferred a print top too but I think this is really cute. I would stop hating her if she dressed like this more often!!

  • quiltrx

The pants in the model look are amazing.

Anyway, this jacket and especially the skirt sure do look “homemade” for something that’s silk and from an expensive designer!  I like the shape of the jacket but I think a non-solid would have been more interesting.

  • Hey! She stole my walk of shame hair. >:(

For something coming from a designer label called “Ho” it is the least “Ho-like” thing she has worn in a long time.  A step in the right direction and then a side step off a cliff with that awful skirt.

  • Candigirl1968

If Lea had paired the top part with pants, the shoes might have worked (but not being able to show a big swath of skin somewhere may have made Lea twitch).

  • SublimatedRage

Well, at least she go the “Ho” part right……

  • kategs

Good grief, I made a suit like this in the 8th grade and it was awful then.  This one is so badly made.  I do like the color on her though!

  • loveisblind1

    Very Rachel Berry though.

  • lilazander

TACKY Ho (the key-word), the shoes are nice, though.
