Kerry Washington in Prada

Posted on January 07, 2013

We were pretty hard on Miss Kerry last week. With good reason, though; it was one of the ugliest dresses we’ve ever seen. Because we’re such loving and generous souls, we were primed to sing her some hosannas this week as a way of making up for being such horrible bitches to her.

Unfortunately, hosannas will not be forthcoming.

Kerry Washington attends the premiere of ‘Django Unchained’ in Rome in Prada.

It’s at least refreshingly simple and clean in comparison to that last Frankendress. We don’t quite hate it or love it, though. Certainly, the white looks good on her and we like the basic shape. But an O-ring and cutouts at the hip do not normally a fabulous gown make. It’s just an odd little dress. It totally obscures her shape and the hem stops at an awkward place. Not nearly as awful as the last one, but not great, either. It’s attention-seeking, we’ll give it that. The shoes are just okay, but the clutch feels like an afterthought. Not a bad idea to bring in some color there, but it’s looking like a makeup case to us. Also, is it us or is her hair and makeup lately making her look very tired?

It would be kind of a Jolie dress if it were long enough. Hair looks super-tired.

  • Judy_J

Her hair looks like the before photo in the old “Herbal Essence” shampoo ads.

  • filmcricket

She’s another woman I think would look great with a shaggy, chin-length bob. I wish Hollywood didn’t require long hair of its actresses, not everyone looks good with it.

If the dress ended at the knee and the clutch was a little more killa, this would be a cute, springy ensemble.

  • mjude

    not good.

    • Karen Maslowski

It looks like designer prison wear, doesn’t it?

  • WhiteOprah

Is that a cheap and pitiful wig?

    • MissAnnieRN

that’s exactly what I was thinking.  I have a huge girl crush on Kerry, and she has really good hair.  There are some funky colors in it, so maybe it’s just recent over-frying?  but I hope for her sake it’s a bad wig.

    • MilaXX

It may be a wig. Maybe she’s trying to protect her own hair from the over-styling during the press junket.

      • e jerry powell

        A distinct possibility.

      • WhiteOprah

For her sake, I hope so.  I don’t think I’ve ever looked at her before and thought “Wow- that is some bad hair!”

  • MilaXX

The bottom of the dress needs to be more fitted & the length needs to go all the way to the floor. I don’t mind the hair/makeup, but agree the bag is a no.

She may very well be tired since she went straight from filming Scandal to pole dancing for Django.

    • EveEve

The main problem with the dress is the choice of fabric.  It is too stiff.  Something with more fluidity and whisper-soft drape would definitely have worked much better.

      • ampg

Right, and it bunches awkwardly at the O-ring as a result.  I actually like the idea of this dress quite a lot, and I think it’s an example of well-deployed cutouts, but the fabric doesn’t quite make it happen.

  • Sobaika

Ugh. Her hair looks so… dingy.

  • LLuL

No to the Biel bangs. Turns out no one can pull them off.

She seems to know that this is Not Her Dress by the look(s) on her face.  In frame 3 she looks like she may just break down into tears.

  • Introspective

this dress is big on you, has an unfortunate shape (I wish stylists had left the wonky torso cutouts in 2012, but alas they have followed us into 2013) and that hemline is pure damnation.

you’re not tall enough for that not exactly tea length-not exactly ankle length hem. it stumpifies. that plus the booms and the overall look on your face (suggesting that you too are unimpressed) means that we all should be unimpressed. so I guess we all are on the same page Kerry.

youre way better than this. show us next time.
    love,
    introspective.

  • Call me Bee

I like it.  It has a subtle 60s-mod feel to it.   And Miss Kerry’s hair and makeup continue the mod look.
Don’t feel bad about calling her out for that last dress.  It was just plain silly.

  • In_Stitches

That dress would be so much better cut to the knee.  She’s pulling off the cut outs and the o ring, but the length is dragging her down.

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Lengthen or shorten the hemline. It’s giving me the heart palpitations.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

If she’d saved this for Cannes it might have been a WERQ. In the sun, under the palm trees with a killer sandal it’d look breezy and beautiful. In January, indoors with boring shoes, it just shows the flaws in the fit.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

The length and shape are abysmal.  I could get behind the O-ring and cutouts if the shape were sharper, but this just looks like a sack with holes in it.

  • captrenault

My Mom had a bathing suit like that in the mid-70s.  Brown.

    • schadenfreudelicious

      ha, so did mine!

      • l_c_ann

So did I.  (Yes, age does sometimes own up to its mistakes.)

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Her hair looks like she got into a scuffle right before she went in front of the cameras.

  • decormaven

Even with the cutouts and hole punch, it’s a pretty pedestrian ensemble. And what is up with that green clutch? Apropos of nothing. Stylist: get a caffeine fix, call in some favors, and get this woman a winning look. She’s doing the heavy lifting- you just do your job.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Hem it like 6 inches (make that 12 in) and we might have something here. Her hair and makeup look good, though.

  • Ceur

The ring and the cut-outs cheapen the dress drastically.

  • Imasewsure

Yes just blah and ill fitting but not hiddy…. don’t love the multicolor hair but the makeup seems ok to me

  • warnerave

i must have seen that dress at Ross, TJ Max or Marshall’s haha!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Better than the awful Peter Pilotto thingy, but the dress can’t decide what it wants to be. The top is prim and the bottom is racy. I’d like it better with no sleeves and a slightly lower neckline. Great color on her, though.

Plus, she looks like she hasn’t slept in a week and the hair is waaaayyyyy over-processed.

    • l_c_ann

I can only imagine the amount of time it took for the hair cutter to make sure that every strand of hair was a different length.

  • GorgeousThings

That’s the kind of dress that looks good in the fashion sketch but doesn’t translate to fabric/real life. It’s too beachy for this event, but the fabric is too heavy to be beachy done right.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

No piece of clothing should have a ring

  • EEKstl

IF (and yes, it’s a big if) the following occured this look could have been saved:

    1. 2-3 sizes smaller so it actually fit her body
    2. Shorter sleeves
    3. Hem hit right at knee
    4. Purse didn’t look like a makeup bag

    As is, OUT.

  • unbornfawn

Everything you said AND it is the dead of winter. That is a summer dress.

  • jmorino08

Tacky and ugly. And that is not good hair for her.

  • butter nut

this dress was meant for a woman at least a foot taller than she is.  she’s drowning in that thing.  poor thing is working the shit out of it, but there’s no saving it.

  • quiltrx

This might be alright if it were made to fit.  As it is, it looks like two sacks hooked together.

  • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

This looks like the cover picture of every Simplicity, Butterick and McCall’s pattern book from 1975.

    • Stubenville

      Where is the +1,000 button?

  • Valerie Jones

Makeup ok, hair, criminal. Whoever did this to her needs to be sued. Dress needs to be either longer or shorter – ring and cutouts, strangely, are not bothering me. I find them oddly appropriate to an appearance in Italy. Kinda “mod,” maybe.  But what the shoes?

  • Annabelle Archer

Now she’s just hurting my feelings.  What the hell?  It’s so ill fitting and that hem is just…stupid…for lack of anything eloquent to say.  Damnit Kerry. Fire somebody, hire somebody, do something! On a plus side, she’s looking much healthier and happier in the eyes, so there’s that.

  • guest2visits

I actually love this; even if I can’t say it would look as good for everyone.  The cutouts are not vulgar and in fact the Sunday church
length of the skirt makes the cool, simple lines look demure.  It looks more like a summer dress, however.  Is it toasty in Rome?
Agree; the limp make-up bag clutch is disappointing.

  • Trisha26

The dress is interesting but it just looks too big overall. Not partial to tight/revealing/short but I’d love to see this (with a back) above the knee and one size smaller. Makeup looks fine to me, but her hair does look a little fried on the ends.

  • Zippypie

Whoever is choosing her outfits needs to be fired.  And if it’s her, she needs to fire herself.

  • mike__tv

Shit around your belly neeeever looks good. Ouuuuuuuuuuttt!

  • margaret meyers

I think she looks sweet here.  I like the softness of her hair and the dress, and it makes a nice change-up from all the hard, vivid, complicated looks we usually get on the red carpet

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6XZL4ERHTIOC3HJYCVLLKIKPRE Joshua

I think the dress minus the midsection is pretty and made even prettier by her Unfortunately it has that midsection so it’s just not good. I will say however that I think she looks beautiful. That face is stunning. If that’s what you consider looking very tired, then sign me up for some of that.

  • http://twitter.com/peacebang Victoria Weinstein

She has obviously been abducted by aliens. There’s no other explanation for these bizarre appearances in such unflattering and disastrous frocks.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Miss Washington is as gorgeous as usual, but she should have said no to that dress.

  • AthenaJ

I used to have ‘sexy’ tops and dresses that had cheap plastic O-rings holding them together. However, I was a teenager in the late 90′s. What’s Kerry’s excuse?
