Josh Brolin in Ermenegildo Zegna

Posted on January 08, 2013

We salute Josh’s brave use of color when so many male stars seem desperately afraid of it.

Josh Brolin attends the premiere of ‘Gangster Squad’ in Los Angeles in Ermenegildo Zegna.

Ermenegildo Zegna Spring 2013 Collection

We do not, however, salute the execrable tailoring on display. Hem those pants, boy. You look like you’re standing in a hole. Even the jacket looks too big. Tsk. A gorgeous suit, nearly ruined. He looks like he’s waiting to grow into it.

You should blame him for the size he chose, not the suit. You give the impression that Ermenegildo Zegna sucks, when it’s actually one of the very best doing suits.

    • Elizabeth Silverstein

How did you get that from “A gorgeous suit, nearly ruined?” TLo are clearly bagging on Mr. Brolin’s choices and not on the design or make of the suit.

    • OrigamiRose

Quite sure that is precisely what the critique does, hold the wearer accountable for the choices that diminished the appearance of a very fine suit.

“Hem those pants, boy. You look like you’re standing in a hole.”

      “A gorgeous suit, nearly ruined.”

Did you even read the post?

    • aeb1986

“A gorgeous suit, nearly ruined.” I don’t think they gave that impression at all

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

No, they didn’t give that impression at all. They use plain words, in English, to explain that it is the tailoring, not the design, that is in question.

Definitely the facepalm moment of the day for me!

  • James Wurm

He looks like he wants to shoot himself, the way he stands in front of the poster.

    • lovelyivy

Yeah- even if this fit perfectly it wouldn’t work for him because he looks terribly awkward and like he can’t bear to be there.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

It’s very wrinkled. and he looks like he needs the smug slapped off him.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

That’s a lovely colour. I also like the shirt that was chosen for him, and I have a fantasy that his step-mother sent her gays shopping for him but couldn’t get to the tailor in time to have them hemmed properly.

  • Verascity

It’s great that he chose a color… but too bad it’s a terrible color on him.

    • kimmeister

Nor does it work particularly well with the lavender shirt and gray tie.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I’m glad someone said this.  When I saw the first picture, I was thinking T Lo would say something about a more contrasting colored shirt.

      • RebeccaKW

I wish he’d gone with the blue, like the runway.  That might have helped him.

  • forward_slash_PRS

That is indeed a gorgeous suit on a handsome man; too bad about the fit. Love the shirt & tie colors.

Wasn’t he just busted for something?

Edit: But does he need a haircut, or are those wisps over his ears a new style (I hope not)?

    • OrigamiRose

Picked up for public intoxication late late New Year’s Day.

  • Pants_are_a_must

    He does not look happy.

On a brighter note, he does look very well groomed.

  • Zippypie

Great color and the shirt and tie look pretty damn great with the suit.  I just don’t think the cut of this suit is for Josh Brolin.  He’s not long and lean but more of a broad, athletic type of body.  It looks like he may not have been able to go a size smaller on the jacket without getting a fabric mudflap over his rear.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Agreed, slim or athletic fit is not what he needs. He’s more solidly built than current suit styles.

  • MilaXX

I was watching a repeat of Marcus Welby and was once again reminded of how much he looks like his dad.
Nice suit reduced to “meh” due to poor fit and horribly wrinkled pants.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Oh I had such a crush on Dr. Kiley. (I hope I remembered that correctly…It was Kiley, right?)

      • MilaXX

        yup that was him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mwyarbrough Michael Yarbrough

He looks like Taylor Lautner trying on daddy’s suit.

    • Melvis Velour

      BINGO!

  • hughman

I like his hair although I would have gone with a smokier eye.

Oh wait, wrong post. My bad.

  • SugarSnap108

Yep, great suit worn poorly.  Too bad – he could have looked pretty smashing if it were well-tailored.

However, I do enjoy the metaphor happening in several of these pics, where the poster version of Josh Brolin appears to be shooting actual Josh Brolin in the head.

  • StellaZafella

I know how beyond old fashioned I am when I say: “Suits, for me, will always be Tweeds and Flannels for winter and maybe silks or linens in Gaberdines for summer…period.” I’m afraid, having lived through the fifties and sixties (with male relatives that sold used cars), shiny suits look cheap. and while I too salute the gorgeous Mr B for doing color, this shade makes me see the hideous “iridescent” fabrics that we live through every now and then…which, again in my opinion, look cheap AND tacky…like suits for mob johnnies and strip show barkers.
Of course, I wouldn’t mind if he’d just take it all off…right now…yes!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I feel like tweeds and flannels are fairly casual suiting options. Did they come in a smooth-faced fabric for more formal winter events? Or would it always have been a dinner jacket in the evening?

      • StellaZafella

Personal experience was that there were “Country Tweeds” and “Town” clothes. Yes, there were some polished or “fulled” wools that would present a less fuzzy nap…And remember: My frame of reference is the 40′s through the late 50′s when there were separate styles of suits for the boardroom, genteel day wear, and “dress-up”. And you’re right, of course – after 5 it was white or black dinner jacket and the appropriate accoutrements…or tails even – (if I wasn’t in a gown!)
        As I say, I wasn’t born to the manor, but I lived in a few…   ;).

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Thank you! I find fashion history so interesting but I am pretty ignorant about it.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m throwing this in with the D&G widows weeds; a look that works either for the catwalk or the fetal. Paired with the blue the model is wearing it’s stunning.

    • ecallaw1977

I don’t think I agree that it skews mature, but I do agree that it can be stunning, but only on very few.

  • kimmeister

So shiny and wrinkled! Well, at least it’s not the disgusting shade of brown Ryan Gosling had on in the earlier post from today.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

    he.looks.like.a.robot.  smile.robot.smile. >clunk<

  • Pennymac

Blech. He’s on my irrational celebrity hate list.

  • RocknRollmom

Getting a distinct Taylor Lautner in dissipated middle age vibe here.  Taylor, don’t go here young man!
Great suit as has been stated.  And as someone has already noted, the smug on this man just always makes me assume that the rumors I have heard over the years must be true.  And then wonder why a beautiful and talented woman like Diane Lane puts up with it.

  • another_laura

Seriously, the tailoring, it is to sigh.  And I really do not like the shiny suits.

However, I like the color combo and am thankful he’s wearing dress shoes and (presumably) socks!

  • http://twitter.com/Josietoyou Joanne Abrams

Too bad he recently was arrested for being publicly intoxicated

    • e jerry powell

I mean, really, how is he finding time to get tailored with getting drunk and disorderly far higher up on his schedule?

    • Sartorial_She

Nothing I couldn’t have been arrested for. I guess I’ve just been lucky…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Fortin/17605924 Neil Fortin

Amazing suit! the whole show was full of these beautifully milled silks specifically for Zegna!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YGDG5WUYES2QXPNC7BIDINE3W4 Brian

I got as far as “Josh Brolin in” and my head finished with “SMPD cuffs.” It was a big weekend for that out here. Although I was disappointed to learn that Dhrama & Greg (Thomas Gibson’s DUI arrest) was not the reason we had to stand around cooling off before starting our late night run.

  • Louise Bryan

I like the color, but I winced when I saw the pants.

  • quiltrx

Shiny, ill-fitted pimp suit.  Looks completely different on the model.  I guess he’s trying to distract us from that bit of trouble he was in, what with the color and bad tailoring and all.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Would it have killed him (well, his “people”, anyway) to press the suit? It looks like he slept in it.

ETA: It’s a great color, though, and I like the color of the shirt with it. And he’s a very, very good looking man. :)

  • deltabronze

At least he doesn’t have his hands in his pockets. And no neckbeard!

  • sweetsadness

He looks kind of dumpy, anthropoid.

  • Frank Lithium

Gorgeous man, gorgeous suit, even though the pants are slightly long. But I’m most peeved about the fact that with that hair cut, he looks like a grown-up version of that lama-faced/nosed dude from Twilight.

  • Rebecca Jay

Those Brolin men sure are handsome.

  • librarygrrl64

    He looks soooooo uncomfortable.

  • decormaven

If he waits until he grows into it, that suit will be so wrinkled, the pressers will never get it straight.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

They don’t pay for the clothes, so they can afford a tailor, dammit! I thinks the suit is gorgeous, but I liked the stronger shirt color on the model better.

    • Qitkat

Or is it the same damn issue with the ladies in their borrowed long gowns, puddling on the floor unnecessarily? Presumably not allowed to hem to fit.

  • formerlyAnon

Not at all disputing the poor fit. But, like the shiny satin on the ladies, those wrinkles tell me that the fabric is too shiny to be worn for flash photography, except if donned solely for the photoshoot.

  • Kathy_Marlow

He’s looking more and more like Tommy Lee Jones these days…which is not a bad thing, considering.

    • Sara LaBatt

I think he worked so hard on that character for MIB 3 his face froze like that.

  • Sartorial_She

TLo- I love you guys simply for using the word “execrable”.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

It’s one of our favorite words.

  • guest2visits

You know; he looks even younger these days…. younger than his poster…maybe it’s the suit,?

  • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

on the other hand, woot woo for the model version!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

I love the suit on the model with that shirt and shoes.  He reminds me of Bowie.  Sigh….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I know he looks just like his pops but in some of these shots he could be James Marsden’s older brother.

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

Josh!  Don’t shoot yourself!!  (2nd from bottom)

  • Imasewsure

The model’s version of the suit is awesome. This one, not so interesting but he is damn handsome…

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

He looks suddenly old. . .

  • ccm800

Even his poster self is unhappy with the tailoring and taking aim. PS. Steam bitch! It’s your damn job!
