Jessica Chastain in NYC

Posted on January 08, 2013

Let’s all pretend that these pictures are totally not staged. It’ll be difficult, but let’s just go with that fiction for now.

Jessica Chastain goes for a walk in a Michael Kors coat paired with Rupert Sanderson sandals.

Michael Kors Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Caroline Brasch Nielsen

Rupert Sanderson ‘Camail’ Platform Sandals

Because you know what? We don’t think we’ve ever seen her look quite so pretty before. It’s funny how a staged pap-shoot brings out her beauty more than a hundred fashion editorials, no?

And way to go on that coat, Mr. Kors. It’s stunning. Love the round pockets.

    • Sobaika

She looks smashing! High fashion does not seem to be her forte, she always looks better on the street. Fingers crossed that she hires someone good for the red carpet.

    • MsOlympia

Her toes are froze, tiddly pom.

    • ralish

She’s lovely here. Anyone care to explain how these staged paparazzi shoots work?

      • Jecca2244

i am assuming she just got very dressed up knowing the cameras would be on her even if she was running errands.

    • GorgeousThings

LOOVE the coat. Except for one thing – someone buttoned it wrong and the hem is wonky, which makes my eye twitch. That’s minor. I would lose the sandals though. Gurrrrl  - look around you. It’s January in Manhattan and everyone else is wearing scarves, mittens and hats. Oh yeah, that was a “oh gee, I’m just heading to Starbucks and oh my look at all the nice photographers what on earth are they all doing here?” moment.  Right….

      • kimmeister

The sandals are great, but I totally agree with you.  It’s like the seasonal opposite of when you see people in tank tops and shorts with Ugg boots.

      • Nikko Viquiera

to be fair, there’s a guy wearing shorts behind her in the last photo :)

        • DeborahJozayt

He just wanted to show off his tan.

        • Jacqueline Wessel

There’s always a guy wearing shorts. The weather doesn’t seem to matter to them.

          • JasmineAM

My high school’s football always wore shorts. True, we were in Alabama, but during the winter it could still get down to the 30s and sometimes even the 20s and Coach V always had his nylon shorts on.

          • sweetlilvoice

I work with that guy-in the midwest where we recently got a foot of snow.

      • another_laura

I missed that thing on the hem, but now I can’t un-see it.  Remember to button the inside buttons, ladies!

      • SorayaS

Yeah she definitely looks cold with the bare legs and sandals. And why isn’t she carrying a bag? It looks flat-out like a photo shoot, not even an attempt to make it look like pap photography.

Stunning colour on her though. And the hair and makeup is red-carpet-worthy.

        • WhiteOprah

Yes- missed opportunity on the bag.  If you’re going to have a staged photo op you might as well pimp out some more labels.  ;)

      • Kristin McNamara

Yea my first thought = how the HELL is she wearing shoes that expose her toes (and tights-less legs!!!) to the elements?! I was JUST in NYC last week, and it is certainly not sandal weather. Wow.
Second thought = looooooooooathe those circle pockets.

        • ReneeBr

I think this may have been taken as she was heading to do a David Letterman taping.  Same shoes, same bare legs, bright blue dress.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

Oh me too, I was in Manhattan over NYE and it was crazy cold. I’ve got a pic up on FB of me on the street with straight ice on my hood, but here she is trotting around with bare legs when I had legwarmers AND kneesocks on. She looks INCREDIBLE though. I’m sorry, I love fashion, but thank goodness she gets paid the big bucks, because I’d not do it in those temps.

          • Kristin McNamara

I was there for NYE too! :) On the 30th, we waited in Times Square for cheap Broadway tickets IN THE FREEZING COLD for over an hour and I was thisclose to tears by the time we got to the front. haha

      • Aurumgirl

Except for the guy in shorts and loafers, immediately behind her.  But you always find those crazies around in the North (and NYC is the North) in January.  How sad to stage an “accidental” photo shoot and then find yourself sartorially aligned with a guy like that.

      • BrooklynBomber

I guess she didn’t button the inner button. But I sure do want that coat. Though I might change the buttons; I guess it needs that little bit of gold, but they look like grandmother’s earrings.

      • suzq

She didn’t button the inner buttons on the double breasted coat, so the inner panel of the other side is sinking a bit.  It’s a way to add texture and make it not so straight across in the front.  I did with with by db jacket, back when I wore db jackets.  I believe I’ve given away all by db jackets at this point.

The circle pockets are my favorite part.

      • wisdomy

Thank you!  I can’t be the only one who thinks that a winter coat with bare legs and sandals looks ridiculous.

    • NC_Meg

That’s a personal best, I think! Some stars do better on the street than on the RC and clearly she is one of them. Even her hair and makeup look great.

    • charlotte

Goes for a walk? That looks more like a movie scene! Especially because she isn’t showing off a bag. Well, who needs a bag with a coat that fabulous…

      • ChiliP

Seriously, I thought this was for a photo shoot. Can someone enlighten me about these publicity shots? What are they used for- just to generate press about the celebrity? And does the publicist actually contact paparazzi to take the pictures, or do they choose locations that just happen to be frequented by paparazzi? Truly, I didn’t even know that these staged “real” pictures were a thing before I started reading this blog.

        • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

They’re used to generate publicity and yes, the publicist will alert the paps as to where they’re going to be.

          • YAELS

ah, that makes much more sense. She is not even pretending to be out and about. The MODEL has a purse and she doesn’t. But she does look lovely!

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Right? Like she’s about to throw her hat in the air and proclaim her love for New York. Or something.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

yes, here i am out walking, just happen to look perfect with not a hair out of place.  why is everyone else bundled for snow?  i am perfectly comfortable in my bare legs and six inch platform sandals.  tat-ta, now.

    • tresfabuleux

      Sandals though? In this weather?

    • teensmom99

Coat is great but too big.  I know it’s hard to get a good fit with coats that need room for layers (and when you wear sandals in 40 degree weather, you need layers) but the sleeves are too long and that is annoying.

    • kimmeister

What a fabulous coat.  Her lip color clashes with it though.

    • momogus

She looks gorgeous! Love that coat, though it’s a little cold for bare legs and open-toed sandals in NYC these days.

    • MilaXX

It would be just that much more believable if she wasn’t wearing sandals out doors in the dead of winter. She looks pretty though, she has great taste in coats.

    • Call me Bee

That is an awesome coat.  But there is something wrong about walking down the street wearing a beautiful wool coat in January with bare laegs and strappy sandals.  And no gloves, handbag, etc?  Where is she supposed to be going?  Weird.

      • ralish

yeah, the no bag thing makes this even more obviously staged.

    • marilyn

She looks great.  My only comment might be that the shoes don’t quite look right with the coat.  It is for day time freezing weather, and the shoes are evening, summer.  They are okay together, but not perfect.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

This makes me want to blow dry my hair more often and wear heels. She looks fantastic top to bottom.

    • thecitysleeps

Coveting the coat.  The colour is also gorgeous.  She looks very pretty.  So fake though.  Who goes out for a walk in high heeled sandals at this time of year?

    • http://twitter.com/kbshee kbshee

No purse and open toed shoes? In New York? In January?

    • another_laura

      Ditto on everything, guys.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

WOW! That is definitely her red, isn’t it?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

as a coat queen who lives in texas (we are right in the middle of our 2nd seson, called “not summer”, so it is in the 50s), TLO is starting to make me feel jealous of ms chastain for more than her cheekbones.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

She has the whitest legs I’ve ever seen — that’s not a slam, I think she looks great.  But wow, if there was snow behind her, she’d look like she was floating…

    • j_am

My feet are cold looking at this! But, that coat is outstanding.

    • Inspirit

I want to quibble and complain about how staged the whole thing is, but I just can’t. Goddammit, she’s GLOWING. Why doesn’t she ever look this gorgeous on the red carpet?

      • StellaZafella

Too much pressure. Red carpet gigs are not every star’s forte…some shine, some…just…can’t…with all the focus and flash. While a staged pap shoot is more like modeling, which Ms. C has shown her chops with.

      • l_c_ann

        The glow is frostbite.

    • j_anson

      Wow.

    • Judy_S

      No bag?
At least what she’s selling is herself. She looks so lovely.

    • Trisha26

Pretty – but the bare legs & strappy heels are silly & a dead giveaway it’s a staged shoot. (Since when are shoes like this called sandals?)

    • Zippypie

The coat is gorgeous and she looks radiant, but it’s a size too big, the shoulders are too wide and the sleeves are too long.  And who the hell wears strappy sandals and bare legs in NYC in the winter with no gloves at least?  Pah!

    • Verascity

This is literally the best I’ve ever seen her look. This should be a WERQ, even.

    • OrigamiRose

Never have found her beautiful before now.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Personal best.  Love the coat and I need the handbag the model is carrying.

    • melanie0866

Cute coat but it’s a little too big for her, and sandals on the street during the day in JANUARY in NEW YORK?!?

    • http://www.lifeinspice.com/ rose88

This is a WERQ for sure!

    • unbornfawn

She looks fantastic. The coat really suits her.

    • Alisa Rivera

Why not  a great pair of boots? Love the coat but I can’t sign off on the ridiculous incongruity of bare legs and toes with a wool coat in January.

      • l_c_ann

Sandals in midwinter?  They must heat the sidewalks.  (The dude in the background with the cargo shorts is also enjoying the warm.  All the down jackets are just people showing off their Christmas presents.)

    • StellaZafella

Love the coat, love the shots, even like the round pockets referencing the buttons. I say, if your gonna stage a shoot, do it up front, like this. it insults me as an observer somehow when they try to look like they aren’t doing anything for the camera…like models who do the ‘looking at my watch’ pose in catalogs…I don’t know why, it just makes me snork.

    • shopgirl716

Everything below the knee looks really cold.  I’d be miserable.  But loving my amazing coat.

    • Lily-Rygh

LOVE the coat — perhaps the best I’ve seen from the Duchess.

    • http://www.facebook.com/victoria.rodeno Victoria Rodeno

Love that coat. The shoes are slamming too!! You are looking great, Jessica.

    • tinyredlocks

I live in NJ, so I know that while it has been unseasonably warm, it is a still a bit chilly for bare legs and sandals. Boots would have been a better choice for this “not staged” set of photos. That being said, she looks great (from the knees up)  and I’d shank a bitch for that coat. It’s fabulous. Brava, Kors.

    • JuliaInBlack

Personal best for Jessica and I’d agree possibly for the Duchess too.  I would punch my grandma to get that coat (okay well, no, but it’d be CLOSE.)

    • http://www.thirteen.org/program-content/downton-dish-season-3-episode-1/ Gotham Tomato

I agree she looks great here – nice and relaxed. I LOVE the coat (great details) and even though that color isn’t one I’d pick for a redhead, it looks great on her.

I have a red Michael Kors coat that I’ve had for at least 5 years and it’s still a fave.  He makes gorgeous coats.

    • altalinda

Honey, it’s not that warm in the NE.  Wear some hose or tights and closed-toe shoes.  I’m getting pneumonia just looking at you.

      • SRQkitten

Thank you for saying that! I was looking at it (from Florida where our temps will be in the -groan- 80′s this week) thinking “if I were wearing that coat, it would probably be because it was cold, so wouldn’t my tootsies be freezing in those shoes?”

Is Ms. Jessica on the payroll of the US Coatmakers Association? She’s been really workin’ the coats lately!

        srq

    • Jecca2244

she should pretty much win queen of the world for her performance in zero dark thirty. she is one of those women that i like to think would be friends with me in an alternate universe….

    • jw_ny

If you’re going to pose, then just pose…the fake walking with the straight stiff arms looks, well…fake.

No gloves, no bag, and the open toe shoes just reinforces the fakeness. (couldn’t ignore the obvious staging!)   Nice coat.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

      Agreed. Best ever.

    • littlemac8

I wonder if all these lovely shots of her going back and forth to the theatah are to make her likable and relatable  for awards season since her character is stone cold in her Zero Dark Thirty role?  Just wondering…

    • Louise Bryan

She looks great, but I’m not as impressed with the coat.  Great color, but the hem at the closing is wonky, and pockets should be functional more than fashion statements.

    • quiltrx

Gah, it looks like a perfume commercial!

But she does look beautiful and that is a magical coat (though I can’t wear that shade of red, sadly).

    • 3boysful

She looks gorgeous.  And I always wear sky-high heels when going for a walk in the city.  Not.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love everything about this. I’d kill for that coat AND the shoes!

    • Frank Lithium

What do you mean these photos aren’t natural?! My world has been shattered.

    • tallgirl1204

I just can’t get get past the fact that weather that would call for that coat would not allow for those shoes…

    • TieDye64

      Effing gorgeous.

    • librarygrrl64

Oh, totally staged. The hair artfully arranged over one shoulder? No purse? She looks gorgeous, and that coat is TO DIE, but I hope she’s on her way to some semi-formal evening event, because those are NOT daytime-in-NY-in-winter shoes.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Honestly, I love doing this.  I pretend the world is my stage and put on a kickass pair of heels and a fabulous coat, do my hair and makeup, throw on a pair of sunglasses, and walk around all “that’s right, bitches”.

Needless to say, she looks amazing.

    • decormaven

I’m all about the look, but it’s got to be sub-zero temps in NYC. If she can score a gorgeous designer coat, surely someone can cough up some equally fab boots and warm tights. Minor niggle- the sleeves could have been shortened just a bit.

      • Lilithcat

Actually, it’s in the ’40s in NYC right now, headed for the ’50s.  Still not sandal weather, though.

    • PeggyOC

The coat is fabulous.  She looks great. But no, honey, it’s too cold to be out in NYC right now with bare legs and open toes.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Dig that Marlo Thomas ‘That Girl’ coat! I wish I didn’t have a mortgage so I could buy it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

      DROP DEAD-TRAFFIC STOPPING-STUNNING.

    • judybrowni

Open toed sandals with a winter coat?

      I think not.

    • twocee

Can I pretend I have her budget for coats?  The last 2 she’s worn have been amazing.

    • Judy_J

Lovely coat.  Round pockets really make it stand out.  How nice to be able to take a little stroll wearing fabulous clothes.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Not to mention wearing 4 inch sandals. What a glorious stroll!

    • crash1212

Coat = WANT. NOW. She looks beautiful. Possibly a personal best. The power of a good coat.

    • JulieTy

Love her, love the coat. But she looks like she was photoshopped into that street scene.

    • sweetlilvoice

She looks great, but how cold is it in NY? Are sandals really appropriate?  Love the red.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Her bare legs and the camera guy in shorts stand in stark contrast to pedestrians in puffy coats and boots. I adore the coat, but her shoes and bare legs really pull the overall look down.

    • Kristy Evans

She looks stunning. And that coat is TO DIE. I also like the shoes…but if it’s cold enough to wear a coat, it’s too cold for sandals.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Stunning pic of her but I am distracted by sandals paired with a coat. There’s something wrong with that. I will only look at her from the knees up.

    • guest2visits

O wow – a perfect look for her, beautiful.  I love the coat and shoes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/D.D.D.Dino Dino Bonačić

no bag, no tights/hose, flawless makeup, red carpet shoes. yeah, it’s just her hitting the streets for a walk.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

She looks happy and excited, but am I the only one who thinks the coat is a size too big? And the sleeves are way too long.  I love the round pockets.  I’d love a detail like that on my good winter coat!

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

That coat and the sunglasses on the model,  I would wear them until they were both worn out.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Ack, I want that coat!

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

Oh my gosh I love her hair! She’s stunning.

    • plinkiedoodle

      Love the red on her!!

    • Imasewsure

Love it all. She looks fab. Love love love the coat and the looser fit on her that makes it look a bit like a swing coat… pretty pretty

    • meebs

I absolutely adore this perfect lady.

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

Stunning coat, looks great on her, but . . . wool coat with bare legs & sandals?  Weird.

    • ccm800

Natural light is her best friend and flash – her worst. She looks like a different person depending.
