Jennifer Lawrence in Prabal Gurung

Posted on January 11, 2013

FINALLY. Miss Lawrence looks sexy and put dramatic, like we knew she could.

Jennifer Larewnce attends 2013 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in a Prabal Gurung gown accessorized with a Roger Vivier bag, Chopard jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

Our only quibbles: we’re not in love with the train and her shoes look too thick and strappy for the look. Still, it’s a fantastic leap forward for her. Slightly on the mature side (we could see someone like Sandra Bullock rocking this), but not so much that it looks wrong on her.

We should, by all rights, hate that hair, but we have to admit, we kinda dig it.

I am loving that she looks so confident here.  Confident that she can pull off the dramatic dress and make-up, and the freckled decolletage.  She looks great.

  • It’s strange because in some of the pictures I like it, but in some of them I don’t? Overall though, I think I like it….minus the train.  That can go.

  • I am not sure if it is just the dress but it makes her chest look low or not supported. It may be the geometry of the dress playing tricks on my eyes.

  • Sobaika

This is good for her, but still a bit much. She’s always best served by more simple looks, like at last year’s Oscars.

  • filmcricket

Not wild about the bodice, it’s creating the illusion of droop, which I think we can all agree does not actually exist. But I love what the skirt is doing for her waist and hips, and the makeup is fab.

    • sweetestsith

It doesn’t look like she’s wearing a bra to me, and things look awfully unsupported. Not down to her knees of course, but she is pretty busty and needs more support than this dress is giving her.

Even with that, she looks so much better than usual that I can’t complain. Dramatic without being crazy, all quibbles are fairly minor, and I bet she looked fabulous in person.

  • MilaXX

Now this I like. From what I an see of it, I’m not crazy about the shoe, but I like everything else.

  • mommyca

She looks too old for her age… but maybe it’s the makeup and not the dress?

    • Can’t pinpoint one thing that does it but, all together, this still has the “playing dress up” vibe with which she’s been lately afflicted. You’re right; the makeup doesn’t help.

  • marigi

It sure looks a lot better on her than the model! She looks very good, almost delicate, while some of her past looks make her seem as if she’s wearing NFL armor on her shoulders.
Side note: What’s up with a brand named “Skinny girl”????

    • ecallaw1977

I think Skinnygirl is diet cocktail mixes.

      • Jecca2244

yes. started by that Bethenny lady on Bravo. She had no money, went on the Real Housewives, developed this brand, sold it, and is now rolling in dough.

        • They’re actually surprisingly tasty and decently priced…no replacement for a ‘real’ cocktail, but not bad either 🙂

  • hmariec19

I’ve been waiting all day for this! I love it! But the train does bug slightly.

  • Kristalbailey

She looks great! Love the dress (yeah, minus the train) and especially that lip stain.

  • mjude

    really like

  • gabbilevy

Gorgeous, quibbles aside. I really do prefer her with lighter hair.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Killa dress for a killa bod. This is just about as complex a look as she can carry, but dammit if she’s not carrying it like a toy poodle.

  • Beardslee

Interesting dress but I don’t think black suits her.  Thank goodness for all that makeup or else she would look drained of all color.

  • She doesn’t really seem to enjoy all of the attention that comes with being famous. I wonder how long she’ll be willing to deal with it.

  • shawnhunter

i love this. i had the same reaction to the hair though. i feel like i shouldn’t like it, but i really really do.

  • She looks gorgeous, but is that netting over the cut out above the bust? I think that can go because the color isn’t different enough from the rest of the dress. It just makes her decolletage look wrinkly! Other than that, no quibbles.

    • Kimbolina

I agree.  Nix the netting and it would be perfect!  It’s giving her chest a weird veiny look.

      • LearnedFoot

Oh God, now veins are all I can see. Her decolletage instantly went from “lovely” to “ick.” Of course it’s the dress’s fault!

      •  At first I thought the color had rubbed off on her or something! It’s distracting!

  • Athenrein

I think the messy hair works because she *is* young.

  • ankali

To me there’s about 1 design element too many in this dress. Lose the train and/or the harness, and I’d love it.

    • kimmeister

For me, the superfluous elements are the ones around her hips.

    •  I don’t mind train & harness, it’s belt AND peplum AND draping AND train AND illusion netting AND AND AND. I think ditch the peplum and the train and we’re in business.

  • I don’t like her makeup. But I like everything else.

  • AthenaJ

I agree this dress is probably too mature for her… and since she is still young and her facial features definitely show that, the entire look just seems off. In 10 years when the babyface is gone she could rock this. But right now? Not so much.

  • Looks a little like Vera Farmiga’s younger sis….Definitely a step up style wise.

  • Tracy_Flick

She looks gorgeous, but I don’t like the little peplum at the waist, or the droopy draping. Everything above the belt is fab, though.

  • stubbornthoughts

    I love her hair color.

She is totally rocking a Katniss-vibed evening dress right now and I love it.

  • Judy_J

That’s a great dress, and I LOVE those earrings.

  • I love it, except for the belt mustache. Can’t get behind that at all.

    • kimmeister

  • Diane_G

I love the dress, her moles/freckles, and her hair, but I hate that MESH cutout. It somewhat…dirties the look, if that makes sense.

  • decormaven

Minor niggle- the manicure shade is a bit too red for the rose on the lips. Otherwise, she looks great!

  • She’s just an incredibly gorgeous child, with the intelligence and sense of confidence to knock it all the hell outta the park.

  • I agree with the quibbles. Love her lip color.

  • Love it, down to the nail color.

  • librarygrrl64

Fantastic. And I really like the hair. 🙂

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i am (wishfully) thinking there is a secret beef between her and anne hathaway right now, and they are hopefully gearing up for some brutal, savage walk-offs.

  • Only thing I would change is the netting in the chest – it makes it look a bit scary.

  • Carla_Charlton

In my opinion, this dress has too much going on in front, between the cutout, the peplum, the draping…

And is it just me or does her smile always seem forced?  I know it probably IS in this situation, but she never seems to smile with her whole face.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

The thing I love about this girl is that she plays with styles, hair, makeup – I find it almost hard to recognize her in some shots.  She is not only beautiful but also a wonderful actress.  This dress is gorgeous!

  • She looks good, but I’m not loving all this light-weight leather for eveningwear.

  • OneRing

I love her and I mostly love this look. The train looks a little weird in the first photo but it’s growing on me.  My only quibble is the belt/dust ruffle combo.  It’s a bit much right at the waist. One or the other….probably the belt so we have a visual tie to leather yoke.  She’s such a pretty young lady.

  • She generally doesn’t do it for me (I find her irritating for some reason), but I think she looks fantastic here. I could have done without the train, too.

  • Jennifer Coleman

It’s funny how she is all sex-goddes smoulder, then smiles and instantly turns into fresh-facrd ingenue. Fab dress.

  • Lilak

I guess I’m going overboard – and overlooking all the things TLo are – on account of the previous fiasco in black, which makes this a bigtime bungee rebound.Regardless, she is certainly head-turning enough on this occasion that the needle jumps straight to WERQ.

  • jw_ny

Love her hair, dress is ok, but I’m not digging the train or the peplum.  Neither seem to work together, nor with the drape panel and as well not with a belt.   Gosh…seems to be a lot of competing elements on that dress…like the leather (which I like) doesn’t seem like it belongs on the same dress as that train and that draping…idk. still, overall she looks good.

  • jilly_d

I have completely lost my ability to remain objective with her looks; my girl-crush knows no limits.  I require TLo to tell me if what she’s wearing works or not, because I just want to scream SHE IS FABULOUS every time she goes out.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Love the earrings, hate the hair, love the dress but why is that tiny little peplum there?

  • I like the dress, but I’ll pass on the mesh tits.

  • Looks too Audrey-bot for me.  Sy-Fy awards show dress…and that train…ick.  Totally an out for me.

  • E. D.

Her eye makeup has been wonky lately.  Otherwise, she looks great.

  • quiltrx

    Rather Vampira.  I like it.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The train is a bit much, but I really, really like this look on Jennifer-well done!

  • siriuslover

and her hair is so much better than when she was doing the red carpet stints for Hunger Games. Well done!

  • PaulaBerman

OK, but her boobs are squashed! Why couldn’t they be supported instead of pressed against her chest? I seriously love Jennifer Lawrence, but her make up makes her look like a little girl in mom’s face paint. The dress is also too much look for her. She’s overwhelmed here.

  • girliecue

One gorgeous dish, hold the side bun please.

  • EdgarAllenPwn

    We have matching chest moles.

  • ZnSD

wow, SO much going on on this black dress. The leather at the top I truly loathe. yuck. Love her attitude and that other black dress she wore was just *SO* horrible so this is marginally better in that respect. Hate the hair.

  • R. L.

    I love this look.

  • RocknRollmom

I loved this as soon as I saw it.  And had the same reaction…FINALLY!

  • RzYoung

There’s something dead about her smile

  • Allison Woods

I don’t like the poop train, I think the extra fabric on the hips looks tacked on, and the moles on her chest are distracting, but other than that, I rather like this as well.

  • formerlyAnon

Would like this a great deal more if the leather(?) on the upper bodice & shoulders were the same fabric as the rest of the dress. I cannot figure it out, but the hair works for me. And the train looks like a nuisance but I think it might look good, looped in a precise and practiced manner over one arm for ease of walking.

    Overall, a resounding success.

  • libraangel

    Finally, Ms. Jen, finally: Fab!

  • fursa_saida

I need the mesh to either be darker or go away. As it stands, I keep wondering why her chest looks so ashy and worrying for her health.

  • Every single thing about her look was perfect that night. I WANT the dress so bad, but it costs like 4 salaries… 🙁

  • I never thought I’d say this, but you WERQ that leather and mesh boob guard, girl!
