January Jones in Prabal Gurung at SAG Awards

Posted on January 28, 2013

You go and get it, Miss January. While this doesn’t quite inspire a “WERQ, girl!” and accompanying snaps of respect, it does inspire a hearty “Attagirl.”

January Jones attends the SAG Awards 2013 in a Prabal Gurung gown accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and Roger Vivier shoes.

Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Tian Yi

Sure, it’s got some issues – mainly in the footwear and the way her boobs look like they’re in a plastic grocery bag, but the look is striking as hell and the hair really makes it. Major kudos to her for breaking out of the VERY tired “strapless mermaid gown” trap that seems to be engulfing female stars. She still takes risks with her fashion and considering how tempting it must be for her to rest on pretty, that’s fairly admirable, especially when she manages something uniquely head-turning like this.

Attagirl.

I applaud her. She did stand out from everyone else.

And how in the heck do they get her hair to stay like that!

    • Sobaika

Probably because it was such an overwhelmingly boring night, fashion-wise. I found it refreshing, if not necessarily a DAMN GIRL moment.

    • barbarienne

Her hair stays like that thanks to the miracle of Product, and I suspect there may be a bit of stuffing under that poof. Her whole head would crackle if you poked at it. (Which is not a slam; that’s what it takes to have a sculpted hairstyle.)

      • quiltrx

I just read something where she said her hair is falling out from too much dyeing…and this does look like an ideal ‘do if it happened to be thinning in the crown.

    • kathryn_dc

I wish they had added decorative clips or pins or something…seeing that plastered area is really not pretty.

    • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

The same way they did for Grace Jones in the  80s.  Spray spray spray

    • MilaXX

She cut it short so my guess is the rest is just lots of hairpray and gel.

    • loveisblind1

Her hair is definitely dramatic. But am I the only one that doesn’t think it works for her face shape? Like how a dress is supposed to fit a girl’s figure, the hair should suit the face shape..

  • bluefish

The lobster bib wrecks all else.  Why does she do this to herself?

    • http://twitter.com/kbshee kbshee

My thoughts exactly. Bring on the clarified butter, January is ready to eat!

  • Jecca2244

I liked this. some people were bothered by the hair on Twitter last night, but I think it is high time we start applauding when something looks both great and different.

    • Celandine1

I love the hair because it’s different, it suits the dress, and most of all because it’s not nasty raggedy cockerspanial extensions!

  • karenbttc

Really?  Wow… I’m usually so “on the same page” with your critiques, but I hated this.  It looks like a bib and I am vehemently anti-faux-hawk…

Just as long as your promise to hate Rose Byrne’s look later, we’ll still be all good :)

    • halleygee

Same here, I hate this, it doesn’t work at all IMO.

    • Annabelle Archer

Rose! She and Ms. Jones were my major eye twitch moments of the otherwise boring evening.

    • mshesterp

“Striking” doesn’t always equal “attractive”, and I just found this…not attractive.  None of it worked for me.  I thought the bib part looked like a gift basket.  Yuck.

      • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

yes! you put into words just what i was thinking. is this artistic? sure. is it nice to see someone taking a risk on the red carpet? sure. do i think this is attractive? no. the hair + dress combo didn’t work for me at all.

    • sojourneryouth

Same here–normally I bow at TLo’s unerring ability to say what I’m thinking, except way funnier, but there is nothing here that I like.  Isn’t the neckline made out of the same fabric as those small, iridescent fancy mesh gift bags for jewelry and such (I got earrings in one recently, so that’s the first thing I thought when I saw the gathers at the neck)?  I have to be honest and disclose that I don’t really enjoy January Jones as an actress or as a celebrity personality (I find her really boring as both), so I am copping to some bias.  However, I do think she is an attractive woman, and a designer’s dream body-wise.  I am just not convinced that she can do “edgy”, though.  I haven’t ever really seen her pull it off. She always seems too try-hard with these kinds of looks, whereas when she goes casual, or more classic looks with maybe some unusual pieces or edgy accessories, she tends to look more comfy and authentic.  If she were just modeling for stills, she would look great, because facially, she can be made up lots of ways and look pretty different, I suspect.  But in motion, where she has to carry it off, these looks seem to be wearing her.

    • Nazzzy

Same here. To me, this is whole look is simply ridiculous.

    • Louise Bryan

I’m with you, Karen.  The hair looks epoxied into place, a real D.A.  The bib is cock-eyed.  She looks statuesque, but if I were voting, I’d give her an OUT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559324312 Pablo Ulloa

the only problem i have with this is the added fabric at the bottom…. its like a last minute idea in a random project runway episode.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Yup, so much better at the original length.

      • judybrowni

Must disagree, since I hate the tulip skirt.

Which always says to me, “Peek-a-boo, here’s my good china!”

        • sojourneryouth

I liked you for that last line alone.  In my head, it’s being voiced by Rip Taylor with a confetti flourish.

      • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

         Love the shorter version too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s serving some Tilda Swinton inspired hair, and I love her for that.

    Attagirl

    • Alyssa

Yes indeed! I love the hair for not being mermaid hair, and this look definitely required bitch face, and she brought it!

    • pop_top

THIS. I was getting serious Tilda from this look.

  • MsALVA

I don’t love it, but at least she did something different.

And knowing me, if it had been me wearing it, it would take me about five minutes to spill some sort of sauce all the way down the front of that convenient bib thing.

  • In_Stitches

I love it; she looks like David Bowie.  David Bowie going out for lobster, but David Bowie none the less.

    • captrenault

I was thinking Kevin Bacon in drag, but I can see Bowie as well.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

I was thinking more along the lines of one of the Simply Irresistible back up singers (the slicked back hair and red lipstick) out on a formal occasion.

    • kimmeister

Meanwhile my brain went to Blade Runner.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Oof… I really dislike this.  Hate the hair, the orange lip, the way the fabric looks glued on to the collar strip. It would be an OUT for me, for sure.

  • imperfectlaura

For some reason, I think if Rooney Mara and Tilda Swinton had a style baby it would result in looks like this. I really like this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I really felt more like this was a “what the fuck?” and not an atta girl in sight. That hair…makes no sense, as does the grocery bag that is trying to kill her. Unfortunate with her, always.

    • VicksieDo

      I agree, it’s terrible.

  • afabulous50

Last night’s fare was a boring red carpet devoid of color and variety.  At least there’s some interest in this look that pushes it past the usual.

    • Lisa_Cop

I thought this was one of the few fashion statements of the evening.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I don’t love this, but she can certainly carry off the Brigitte Neilsen high hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1447060898 Lori Wade Miller

I don’t like the hair — she has a narrow face, this just accentuates it.  Too high and too slicked down on the sides.  Softer would have been better, IMO.

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Striking. Love the 80s hair, and makes me wonder about Betty’s do in the show (that is, if they are still filming)

  • JosephLamour

It looks like her chest is holding a big ‘ol garlic clove.

    • kimmeister

She was trying to protect herself from vampires!

  • PeggyOC

Sorry, that’s just fugly.  Her hair looks like David Bowie, and it’s elongating her face, which really doesn’t need it.  She looks horsey.  I applaud that she’s not defaulting to mermaid dress, but this is just not working for me, mostly due to the hair and makeup choices.

  • MaryanneGirl

I couldn’t get behind this. Although I did enjoy seeing something different on the red carpet, I just found the neckline really distracting. Love that she did something interesting, though!

  • lehen

i don’t get it.  did she put a maxi skirt on under her dress?

  • Annabelle Archer

    Hated it. Hated.

From Miley Cyrus’ hair to the Payless shoes and everything thing in between.  I hear ya on the ballsy attempt, it’s so different, etc., but if at the end of the day none of it is is flattering, or dare I say “pretty”, then it’s a fail.

    • fwooper

Miley Cyrus?! I’m insulted on behalf of David Bowie.

      • Annabelle Archer

David Bowie would have had much better lipstick : )

  • MzzPants

It has an unusual tuxedo vibe going on.  She really is the ultimate ice princess.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It says something about how boring the red carpet was at the SAGs, that JJ gets a special entry for this ensemble.  The dress is nice enough, but her hair and lipstick are ridiculous, and her shoes are meh.

  • OrigamiRose

I’m sold on the dress, but I still strongly dislike the hair.  It was all I noticed; this is the first good look I’ve had at the dress since last night.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I don’t like it but I appreciate it.

  • Judy_J

    Odd.

  • SophiaPehawkins

I hate the hair so much and while I can appreciate different, I think this is messy and not all that pretty.

  • procrastinatrice

Ha, I didn’t see the hate for this look coming…I absolutely love that dress, and while the hair wouldn’t work in most contexts, it does now. She looks like one cold looking hot bitch.

  • jw_ny

The “grocery bag” at her bust doesn’t bother me in the slightest…I rather like it here.  I am bothered by the bottom half.  It looks like she just slipped on a black full length gown under the shorter draped dress (as seen on the model)  just to make it long.  I expect that at the after party she dropped the gown, bared legs and danced the night away.  Convertible gowns…like Jennifer Lawrence’s, kind of bug me.

Not digging January’s hair either…mostly not liking the slicked back sides, although this gown did need dramatic/statement hair… which she provided.

  • kat89

Don’t love it. Not the dress, not the hair, not the shoes, not the makeup. Sorry. Yes, she does look striking, and attention getting, but not in a good way, as far as I’m concerned.

  • MilaXX

I can imagine her ever going the mermaid dress route unless it’s for a role. I liked this look and only found out this morning that her hair style was in part due to her having to cut her hair because she damaged it changing colors so often this year.

  • Carrieanno

    Fancy lobster bib?

  • librarygrrl64

I like the dress/gown in both incarnations, and I LOVE those bracelets!!!!!

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

I like the dress but I hate the hair!

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

THANK YOU! She does look like she’s encased in a Glad bag!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.souffriau Sarah Souffriau

I have to say I’m not a big fan of the hair or that particular shade of red lipstick on her. Not too big a fan of the shoes or the lobster bib. Okay, so this is totally not working for me lol.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I don’t like it.  She looks like a really fancy waitress.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Nope, don’t like anything about this look.  Not the hair, not the makeup, not the dress.

  • VioletFem

A very striking look. I like January Jones version of the dress better than the original length.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I looked at the pictures and thought, “no, no, no.” The white fabric looks so cheap, and the added material in the skirt is so heavy and slapped-on-looking.

But, you boys have sold me on “at least she took a risk,” and that the concept is pretty good even if the execution left something to be desired.

  • MoHub

I think I could get behind the bib if it didn’t have the weird stand-up collar. If it had a clean top edge seamed at the black neck band, it might have gotten closer to WERQ territory.

  • ojosazules

The hair and the napkin may be risks, but it just looks weird as hell to me.

  • barbarienne

I think the “plastic grocery bag” effect would be reduced if the ruching at the neck were tighter as it is on the model. I assume it slides on the black strap and just worked itself loose. Also, the fabric looks less translucent on the model version.

The addition of the long underskirt w/train is great, very gracefully done.

I hate her lipstick. On my monitor it seems to be clashing with her skin tone. And while I agree the high hair makes the look, I hate what’s going on in back. That screams, “Oh, shit, her hair is short, how can we finish this off? Just plaster it all down and tell her to keep facing forward.”

  • xmixiex

    I… I like this… I like the dress… but… she just doesn’t look good.  I don’t know how else to say it.

  • Lilithcat

She is running as far and as fast as she can from Betty Draper!

That collar reminds me of Daniel Vosovic’s flower blouse.

    • mjude

i thought that collar looked familiar!

    • l_c_ann

Except Daniel’s fabric held its blousonness better, this looks a bit crushed (or in need of more starch and a wearer who never moves).

    • ballerinawithagun

Exactly, I love both. Good eye!

  • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Don’t you think she looks a little like she’s about to be served a lobster dinner?

  • xmixiex

I think I really hate the orange lips, the orange face, and the (WTFinfF?) GRAY brows??  I… what???

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, the brows are weird. Remember Halle Barry’s from last week? They were ashy taupe also.

  • m0r0

Boy the fashion was BORING last night. I didn’t watch the show (hate award shows the are so gross) but the fashion updates on Daily Mail are always good and my oh my was it boring. But that little Kiernan Shipka looked fantastic.

  • crash1212

What a striking, beautiful look. She actually looks comfortable in her skin and happy…something I don’t usually get from Miss January on the red carpet. Attagirl, indeed!

  • elemspbee

oh my. go get, girl. another bib because you’ve put this one upside down. If this is as inspired it got with this round of gown stomping last night, we’ve got a monday to look forward to. Not.

  • Janet B

I really like this dress on January. Except for her choice of lipstick (and barely seen shoes) she looks beautiful.

  • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

Her dinner napkin is tucked into her dress and she has a mullet. I’m not impressed.

  • myristica_fragrans

hate her hair and prefer the original dress length. she would’ve looked much better without matte lipstick.

  • decormaven

I’m on board with almost everything but that shade of lip color, a bit too orange-y for her complexion. Those bracelets are flawless.

    • Lola67

I was going back and forth trying to figure out if it was the hair or makeup that was throwing this off. I finally settled on the makeup. Her face doesn’t match the rest of her. Love the rest of the look though.

  • Fordzo

    Annie Lennox.

  • appliquer

Sorry, guys – the hair? Not attractive.

  • Beth G

I get way too much “I accidentally left the napkin tucked in my dress front”….

  • MissFern

ooh, i love the bold eyebrows and the coral lip.

  • MintaHallWriter

Sorry, TLo. That hairdo is more of a hairdon’t.  HIDDY Hair does not a good look make.  Reminds me of Bride of Frankenstein.

I saw this in the runway photos and thought the bodice was ugly and ill-fitting and the hair worse.  If you’d made this post an IN or OUT, I’d be voting OUT-OUT-OUT.

    Ick.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I don’t know guys.  I think it looks as though she has a big, white heart on her chest.  Not crazy about the hair either.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

It’s amazing how unused I am to seeing her smile!  It really changes her whole look.  I like this better as a gown than with the asymmetric hem.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde chylde

    She’s wearing a bib!!

  • Veronica Russek

She needs earrings… Diamond studs would be perfect.

  • capybara_cafe

The line of the dress is nice, but it looks like she’s wearing a napkin-bib….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

Exactly what I was going to say. And once you see it, you cannot unsee it. If it wasn’t so ruffle-y…

  • bertkeeter

    Almost a WERG!

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Probably my absolute favorite of the night, for many of reasons you cite.  She really takes some risk on the red carpet, and I’ll always want that over those silly mermaid gowns (not to mention side-parted, mermaid hair!)

  • AnnPopovic

That hair’s ugly. Really? No. It’s just ugly. It looks interesting from the back but from the front? It’s. Just. UGLY.

  • alyce1213

Yes!  Stunning and unusual.  The white “bib” is what makes the dress.  The hairdo is not the most flattering for her face, which is a bit narrow, but I get the look she was going for.

  • http://www.facebook.com/interplanet.janet1 Janet Smart

It looks like she’s wearing a bib and she’s wearing my Grandma’s lipstick.

  • marilyn

Don’t like the bodice.  It looks like the creative effort of a fashion school student.  The white top was too cheesy looking.  Sorry.

  • Deb Oswald

My eyes didn’t really get to the hair- stuck on the orange lips!  Oy!

  • jmorino08

I hate that hair with the fire of a hundred dragons!

  • fwooper

cool dress, cool Bowie hair. She looks great.

  • BitterOldQueen

Nice dress, but she forgot to take her bib off after dinner.

  • warnerave

    she is rocking the dress!!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The ‘Tucked in Napkin’ over the decolletage looks silly, on both her and the model. The rest of the look is great and I LOVE her hair.

  • Lilak

Huh . . . Can’t explain it, but she managed to sell me on this.

It didn’t even take that long to unsee the bib effect.  And I like the hair (go figure…I’m generally quiff-averse), which really enhances the gown’s design.
I’m also fine with the jewelry: Even diamond studs would’ve let a little air out of the overall effect.
I typically give Miss J either an A or an F for effort, or she assembles a look that you can appreciate theoretically, in the abstract only.  But very seldom does she make her unusual-for-the-RC look work on her actual self in the real world, as I think she did here.
(I know:  A long way around to saying pretty much what TLo did!)

  • greyhoundgirl

    Love the smile, especially.

  • Zippypie

Gruesome.  Hefty bag chic. And that hair.  I just don’t get this woman’s sense (or lack thereof) of fashion at all.

  • lobsterlen

Of course I would think of this when looking at this dress …. lobster bib chic!

  • mhleta

I’m totally on board with this look at first glance, but I can’t look too long, or I start seeing issues. Namely: “Excuse me, but I believe Madame neglected to remove her tucked-in napkin when she left the dinner table. May I?”

  • thecitysleeps

Hate the shoes.  Love the rest.  Great dress.  I love the upper part with the black straps personally.  Love the make up and hair, and omg she’s even smiling in some of the pictures.  Win!

  • nannypoo

    She looks like a vampire.

  • shayna61

It looks like she tied a dinner napkin around her neck and tucked it into the front of her dress. Horrible. Just horrible. I can’t believe you guys actually like this schmatta.

  • subwaycars

I loved the dress but I really couldn’t handle the hair. Props to her for at least keeping it up to show-off the collar though.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

It’s one of those things that looks really striking on first look and then gets worse the longer you linger on the details. That said, she looks great, and I’m happy she’s on the red carpet again.

  • unbornfawn

    Just can’t with that bib.

  • UglyTalents

It’s a new look for her, and I dig it. She’s channeling 1980s New Wave video vixen, and that pleases me.

  • Allison Woods

I wish that the modification to the original dress didn’t involve the hip draping AND the other skirt to make it long. Now it looks like two dresses.

I like the look generally speaking though, it’s a little odd, but original and striking and she gets at least a snap and a half for giving it a whirl. Go get it girl!!

  • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

Golden blondes should NOT wear white close to their faces. It does nothing for them, makes their hair look brassy and their skin sallow and forces them to choose a bold lip which rarely does them any favours either.

  • AutumnInNY

Such a pretty woman. Happy to see that she finally smiled in the photos.

You’re right about the white top. It looks like she has a dinner napkin tucked into the top of her dress.

  • silaria

I hate the white napkin part, but I really like the fact that the hair and makeup (and cheekbones!) make her look like David Bowie.

  • carolclark12

Looks like Anthony Ryan has given up fashion design for hair styling.

  • ZnSD

did the spiders from Mars dress her?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

love the ‘elvish’ look of the original…

  • Trisha26

Interesting look but I wish the black halter holding the white foo-foo was in front of the foo – this looks a little dinner napkin-y.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

All I see is lobster bib.  And I don’t like the lipstick color either.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Loved it. Just what I needed to shake off my post-Sybil haze.

  • Anniebet

Rather distressing hair…seriously. And if someone is gonna rip off a sheer kitchen curtain off the rod and attach it to your neckline at the last minute, well, just say no.

  • fursa_saida

I like the short version of the dress infinitely better. I think when they decided to lengthen it, they should have ditched the draping around the hips and gone for a simple straight fall to the floor.

  • http://phreddd.livejournal.com/ Fred V

She made us look – and that’s the worst I can say.

  • lrhoff

No, this doesn’t work.  Ugly hair and lip color.  Quite the disappointment.

  • LittleKarnak

    Ugh….looks like she’s serving Birgitte Nielsen realness…..

  • neofashionista

it truly looks as if her make up was done by a clown who Hates her

  • CarolinLA

    WTF, January?  No.

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

AH. She has finally found an edgy look that really, really works for her.

  • shelley514

I love it when January Jones looks bitchy.  Snaps!

  • Sashima

    Lobster bib?
