IN or OUT: Scarlett Johansson in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on January 18, 2013

The “opening night of my star turn on Broadway” outfit is a particular subset among many in the public appearance wardrobe of a star. The trick is to not appear too glamorous, yet not show up looking so slovenly you’re giving the impression you don’t give a shit. The best manages a sort of Hollywood version of the New York City intellectual look. As such, this is not a bad try by Miss Scarlett at all.

Scarlett Johansson attends the ‘Cat On A Hot Tin Roof’ Broadway opening night after party in New York City in Dolce&Gabbana. Earrings by Irene Neuwirth.

It’s got a bit of a beatnik vibe to it, but it looks well put together and it flatters her. She could do worse. We’re not super-crazy about the earrings (although incongruous jewelry was kind of a beatnik hallmark, so kudos to her stylist for knowing her fashion history) , but we really love the top. We just wish she’d stop trying to make that Rosie the Riveter hair work for her. It’s not your ‘do, dear.

What do y’all think?

Vote Now!

IN! Classic, low-key chic with a touch of Audrey to it.

OUT! Too frumpy and not really the best style for her.

The Minions with Opinions were fairly united in their support of Ashley Madekwe’s warrior gown, voting it IN.

In!  I also don’t like the earrings, but it’s hard to vote out on that awesome top.

  • Sobaika

IN! I really like this, and she is usually sort of a miss fashion-wise.

    • Violina23

She’s even wearing pants that are more-or-less the right size!  Not perfect, but IN.

      • EveEve

Shall we say IN from the hips up?  But straighten out those buttons girl!

    • I agree, this is such progress that I’m even on board with the earrings (I’m a sucker for statement earrings, I must confess)

  • A. W.

Out. That top looks like something a woman in a superhero movie wears during the training montage in China.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  To me, this is a borderline WERQ.  Bitch looks fabulous and she knows it.

  • MarissaLG

IN. I think she looks sexy and fresh but a Very Serious Actress.

  • Meh, not the most stunning outfit but it fits the venue and the vibe. IN

  • LOVE this. She is amazing. Wish I could see her in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”…even the earrings

  • Deb_Lynn

I think it is a flawless deployment of ladypants.

    • Yes. Totally IN.  I would like the hair if it didn’t seem so disheveled.

    • Sarah Clever

Including the gathering at the crotch?

      • Deb_Lynn

I’m just not seeing that as a flaw. But I have curves like Scarlett, so all my pants do that (like I can compare myself to Scarlett, but here I am.) It looks normal; it just looks like dress pants on a frame to me.

  • RoxieRider

In. I was trying to highlight the elements I liked, but in the end I find I love everything about the look except the hair. A Grace Kelly bob would’ve capped this really nicely.

  • I think this is a v nice look.  Not earth-shattering, but IN!

  • Janet B

  • She looks fabulous, especially considering her recent fashion catastrophes. A thousand times IN.

  • Beardslee

  • MzzPants

  • altalinda

In.  I assume she’s playing Maggie?  That could be an inspired choice.

  • Rand Ortega

Love it. She looks polished, comfortable AND sexy. No easy feat & while rockin’ the ladypants– extra points!

  • IN!  She’s looking really great here.

  • AlexisPayne

  • Alyssa Stanfield

In, but I’m not a fan of her posing. Still, much less frumpy than she’s been dressing recently, and I would kill for those earrings!

  • Airkisses

IN. I actually love the earrings. The shape is kind of weird, but they’re a good pop of color.

  • Jessica O’Connell

IN. I actually do like the earrings though I agree on the hair – it’s just not working.

  • Judy_S

IN! I agree about the hair and hate the smooching-the-air pose, but the outfit is great.

  • Nice. I think the earrings would be better with a less aggressively red lip. Does she have that silhouette without a girdle? Amazing.

    • Suzanne Heist

Yes. I like the rest, but that lip color is TOO MUCH.

  • Elleachaudaucul

In, but if she needs to pee that badly, she should just excuse herself from the photocall.

  • This is IN for sure, agree with hair.

  • mjude

    IN.  i adore her.

  • stagmania

IN. I love everything about it.

  • RebeccaKW

Going with In.  I love this look on her (love that top).  I actually don’t mind the hair here.  I kind of wish for a different shoe, though.

  • alyce1213

In, slightly, with reservations.  I like the earrings, but I don’t get them with this outfit.
I don’t love the way these slacks work on her body, but I like the idea of slacks.
Her poses are either 1) too wide, or 2) I have to pee. Neither is good with ladypants.
    Lipstick is terrible.

  • Judy_J

IN.  I love everything about this, except the hair.  But when the outfit looks as good as this one, that is a minor quibble.

  • belfebe

IN!  I love the earrings, but I am not thrilled by her hair.  But she looks great.  So IN!

  • IN.  She looks happy, at ease, confident, and well-styled.  “A touch of Audrey” indeed, plus the modern edge for Today’s Hollywood Star.

  • MilaXX

IN the only thing I dislike is the hair. She should have worn it down. If she really wanted theater cool. A Laurie Petrie headband might have worked.

    • Snailstsichr

In the 4th picture down, I’m getting Anthony Ryan flashbacks from her hair. But still an IN.

  • In! I love the earrings! And the hair!

  • teensmom99

IN. Wouldn’t call it Audrey (can;t think of any one less like ScarJo) but I love the top.

  • In.

  • Elizabeth Schlesinger

IN! Especially because she was onstage all night, not spending hours getting a blowout.  Props to a ladystar for looking polished and chic after a long night at work.

    •  So the poor woman had to take off all her stage makeup and re-do her face for posing? Definitely IN for the effort!

  • FrayedMachine

In, but man is that top insanely flattering on her waist. It almost makes it looks like she trained it that way.

  • No one is going to say anything about her flawless skin? Makeup is also perfection.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

IN.  I absolutely love everything below the hairline.

  • In without a doubt. She looks stunning.

  • StellaZafella

I like the look, the proportions between the top and the Capri/leggings could be tricky but this works.
I do, however think the head back, tough chick pose looks a little like she’s trying to make duck lips with a mouth-full of Novocaine.

  • marigi

In! Very chic, and love the pop of color in earrings and makeup.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

    In. Love the bold lip.

  • frannyprof

In. Best she’s looked in a long time.

  • CeeQ

The way she is posing is distracting. But I have to admit the outfit works on her and is very flattering. But the make-up is a bit much, no? I like the earrings but along with the make-up, it seems too drag-y.
But she still looks quite good so IN!

  • IN!!

  • GorgeousThings

She looks great – too bad her notices as Maggie are more lukewarm than hot.

  • tereliz

In. This is the best she’s looked in a LONG time. Hope your run is long and well-received, ScarJo, honey!

  • nnbb

OUT. Hair and make up are pretty. Pants don’t fit, they are too short and the top is too long for pants that short and tight. I like the earrings.

  • decormaven

I’d like to see the heel of the shoe. Are they heels or flats? She seems to sort of tip forward, so I think heels. I say in; her confidence makes this look work.

  • Pennymac

In.  But Vesicare will help with that bladder problem, or so I’ve heard.

  • Annabelle Archer

  • AuntieAnonny

    Way IN!

  • Deb Oswald

In!  But for the hair… eesh

  • BrooklynBomber

Out. The pants look too tight and not right with the top.

  • IN! Best she’s looked in a while.

  • In. The outfit is just underwhelming enough for the venue.

  • Jangle57

I like the top but I hate the pants.  Ok, they’re basic black but they look tight and cheap.  If I cover them up, I like her look.  As I sway back and forth on my fence, ok, IN but only because at least the  pants are black.

  • ringthing

IN, if only for her absolutely perfect shape. I wish. You guys are so right about the hair, though.

  • Carly Warnock

In terms of fit, this is the most flattering look she has worn in forever.

  • Vera L-

The crotch of the pants looks weirdly twisted in every shot.

She’s on my irrational hate list, so of course I’m not impressed with her.

  • I like everything except for the hair.

  • ankali

In. I’m not wild about it — the earrings are too incongruous for me, the pants could fit better in the crotch, and I hate the orange-y lipstick — but she doesn’t look bad by any means. Chic at least in theory, y’know?

  • Louise Bryan

IN.  She looks very nice, in an actressy sort of way.

  • Definitely IN.  Although she probably felt like shredding the outfit after reading the reviews.  Terry Teachout in the Wall St. Journal was especially bitchy/quotable.

  • pookiesmom

I love it, even the hair. Do NOT love the OTT posing, but you can’t win ’em all. She looks fab.

  • AuntJentie

  • mmc2315

The top is VERY cute.  The cropped pants are making her legs look short, which I’m not loving.  But the real almost deal breaker is that harsh lipstick color.  Screeeech.  No good.

Still, IN.  I feel very loving today, I guess.

  • IN!

  • Imasewsure

IN because I’m ignoring the hair which is awful. Wish she had chosen a more colorful shoe or something but basic black is beatnik theater chic so I guess it’s required

  • IN. I like it, and I’m not sure why.

  • OrigamiRose

IN.  I’m on board with everything, save the crotch of those pants.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

In. Love the look, earrings included.

  • IN. And that bitch has the smallest waist and best figure. I’m so jealous. Love her.

  • In, love it all, even the hair!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

  • Zippypie

IN.  Very New York hip without going hipster though I don’t care for the hair.  She’s working it though.  Love the earrings!

  • margaret meyers

In.  She looks relaxed and comfortable after a super-long day.  It was cold in NYC last night, so I’m only a little worried that this Cat is going to get a chill with her ankles and arms and neck all exposed.

  • VioletFem

IN. Very elegant and fits her to a T.

  • Scott Isaacs

Just plain IN. Snaps all ’round, sweeties.

  • In! I like it. I wish she’d put some color in the shoes, though. Might have made the earrings look a little less incongruous.

  • IN. She looks good. And I do really love those earrings.

  • BobStPaul

In for sure.  I like the earrings.  They provide a nice little pop of color.

  • marilyn

In.  I also don’t like the earrings.

  • Works!

  • Trisha26

    In. Pretty much love her.

  • Tracy_Flick

    In! She looks great.

  • Joyce VG

    Meh. In.

  • PaulaBerman

She looks fabulous, but I hate the body position she is adopting that says, “Look up my nose!”

  • maggiemaybe

I’m lovin’ it from head to toe.

  • MikeW_Vegas

“Minions with Opinions”?   Nice turn of phrase, boys!

  • melanie0866

IN.  She looks pretty close to perfect.

  • I really dig it. I wish she’d chosen a different lip color, but that’s a minor quibble. IN.

  • IN!  I think she looks better than…ever, maybe.

  • In. I’m liking the silhouette.

  • nannypoo

I really don’t like any of it, but I especially hate her hair. She so often wears it skinned back on the sides and poufed up on the top, and it could not be any less flattering. Her head looks enormous here. I hope it’s the camera angle.

  • PrunellaV

I’ve seen her look much worse. IN.

  • For such a painfully gorgeous woman, she seems to have the toughest time pulling it together for the red carpet.  IN.  Awkward pose or no, lady pants are hard and she’s doing a pretty good job here.

  • Samantha Irene

I like it, and would wear it if I could. IN. Though the hair does need to go.

  • phrenk

I think she looks overall lovely.  IN.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. Strikes me that she missed the boat and landed on “too casual.” (ETA: body-hugging above-the-ankle pants just read casual to me. If they look more like leggings than slacks, it takes a LOT of glam for me to promote the ensemble. Like, diamonds with designer silk brocade or sequins kind of glam.)

    Love the top, though.

  • It works for me. IN.

  • SophieCollier

In, of course.  She looks really good.  I like her makeup.

  • HIddy shade of lipstick and nails to match?

  • It’s a good look, but I don’t get the semi-inebriated Norma Jean pose on pic #3.

  • Giving it an IN. Also think the earrings are meant to match her arm tat. I know, I’m digging here.

  • In. Love it. It’s chic and it’s ladypants!

  • Emily Roach

In! I like the way you clarified the appropriate dress code for an event like that. I think it’s great!

  • msdamselfly

In   I like everything , including the hairdo.
Although it errs a bit on the expensive side for the occasion

  • Call me Bee

Like this from head to toe.  IN!

  • kathrineb

I love the whole look! Wow. Well played. To me its a WERQ.

  • IN. She looks lovely, even with the hair.

  • IN; i love it!

  • j_anson

  • SugarSnap108

Hate the hair and the lipstick.  But the outfit is pretty damn chic, and perfect for the venue.

  • demidaemon

IN. My only critiques are that I think she needed a lining or something underneath that top–in close ups you can see her skin through it in a decidely unattractive way. I’ve been thinking about the hair, but I can’t think of another style that would work with this outfit, so I approve it.

  • Anniebet

To rip off a Firefly reference… Capt. Tightpants reporting for duty! Most of her look is “nice”, which is not to say “great”. But teh pants are too snug, lips rather glaring, and hair is just meh – slicked back on the sides, poofy on top – not her best look. Like the top a lot, and the earrings.

    I guess it’s 60/40 Out for me.

  • L.

  • harleydear

Adorable and I want to own it. In.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In! Definitely gives the ‘yes I’m a movie star but I’m also a trained actress who can do Broadway’ vibe.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m not super crazy about the uneven closure in the top. It gives the illusion of a too-small cardigan. The pants and shoes are GREAT, especially if you consider them in light of New Yorker chic. I think it’s an overall IN, but she has done better in the past.

  • DinahR

IN – I think she nailed this.   Her makeup is gorgeous, though I’m not quite sure about the shade of lipstick.  I usually don’t like that hair either, but I think with this outfit it works.   My only nitpik is that everything looks a wee bit too snug.

  • conniemd

In. Liked everything but the hair, which didn’t seem to fit the clothes.

  • such a hugeeee IN order me one

  • Annie Chen

    IN! pants and everything!

  • briecee

Lower-case in.  Serious pants issues, and did she tie a string around her wrist?

  • Haley Buchanan

Her body looks slammin’ (in the New York, intellectual way, for sure) and the makeup and jewelry are just dramatic and artsy enough. Definitely an IN.

  • kolokOlchik

I am not a fan of hers but I think she looks fab (save for the orangish lipstick)

  • It’s a soft in. It’s a nice idea but those blacks aren’t really the same color. I love the top! The earrings are not terrible and her hair is boring but OK.

  • BradWatson

Put me down for not giving a shit. She, presumably, just wrapped her opening night in a bloody Tennessee Williams epic. I’d cheer her for being in a chenille robe, with a face full of cold cream, saying “BIrdie – the heave-ho.”  I’m sorry Broadway thinks it necessary to drop the frikkin backdrop and turn her well-deserved down-time into some jive pose-a-thon. Yes, I’m naive, and no, I don’t care.

  • Out. I have to say, I think it’s official. Skinny pants are just not a good look.

  • In! A nice retro callback when she’s doing such a classic play, and I LOVE the turquoise accents. She looks cool.

  • ccm800

  • crash1212

IN. And I actually like her hair this time around. Love the earrings.

  • fursa_saida

IN! She often wears things that are very fussy, so it’s nice to see her in something more streamlined. (She seems to favor that style in her daily life, as well; I wish her stylist would take a cue from that.)

  • thecitysleeps

In.  I sort of am in love with this.  And I do like the pop of colour of the earrings.

  • SO IN. She looks so great.

  • In!

  • IN IN IN! She’s rocking such an easy, chic look. And the hair is fine. Sometime us long haired gals love to have the hair off our necks.

  • IN. I actually like the earrings, and I think it’s all super flattering on her.

  • librarygrrl64

    • EveEve

  • IN.  Not at all frumpy.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I like the earrings, actually–saves the outfit from being too conservative and also too polished.

  • Anathema_Device

In. That top is so fabulous. Don’t totally dig the earring with it, though.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

teeny tiny “in” and that’s only because she is stunningly beautiful and i can’t see the capri pants very well.

  • I really love the beatnik look , so I really want to love this look, but I just don’t.  I do love the top but over all: Out

  • In! I love it.

  • n/a

  • kategs

I like this look but do wish the pants were half a size larger.  The riding up takes away from the sleekness of that incredible top.

  • lesmaha

  • leave_Blake_alone

  • julnyes

IN – Love her make-up and the outfit, though I don’t like the earrings.

  • Pterodactyl111

IN. I don’t like the top at all, but I do really like the earrings with the black outfit. She looks really classy.

  • IN! I kinda love the earrings and the rest of this outfit.  I can even look past the “undone” hair and the silly vamping.  Plus it is so much better than I’m used to seeing from her.  Good for you Miss Scarlett!

  • the_valkyrie

  • FridaStaire

The pants! They are an abomination! I love the top, like the makeup , hair, and earrings, but those pants cannot be allowed. Ever. Out!

  • I hate to give this cow a compliment but it’s an IN. The make-up, top and jewelry are of WERQ proportions.

  • Claudia Fernandes

In for the effort. But not audrey polish at all…

  • kattyatlaw

OUT. Put your chin down, dear.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • barbarienne

I also hate her hair like that, but I’m starting to think she wears it tight so it doesn’t add volume to her head. Her noggin is somewhat on the larger side.

The lips matching the nails would annoy me, but with the contrasting blue at the ears, it all comes through as little pops of color in an otherwise all-black look, which is fun.

I think the outfit overall is great, so I can ignore the hair. IN.

  • renad

If the pants weren’t so tight, this would be an unequivocal IN.

  • guest2visits

Cute. I think the quality of the top as well as the elegant black heels allow the earrings to work. In.

  • Kathleen B

    IN she looks fab

  • RzYoung

IN I think this is the perfect Scarlett outfit, it flatters her SO much. Love it love it!

  • Terrible_Person

IN! Haven’t liked any of her outfits in quite a while, but she looks great here. And I’ll support those earrings. I love that they have such a vibrant color and, as you point out, the incongruity fits the style she’s going for here. Hair is not the best, but with the rest of the look, it’s a minor problem.

  • leftcoastpickle

IN love the top and love her

  • flower753

    I like it. IN.

  • kikisayshi

IN. She irritates me, but she does look put together and chic.

  • The pose is stupid!

  • Allison Woods

  • libraangel

Oy, I don’t know what to do cause she looks o.k. but hate the earrings with that outfit, and wish SO much she had on a pencil skirt instead. Still, I guess I will have to give her an IN

  • EEKstl

IN.  I love this look, even love the earrings (but maybe it’s just my personal love affair with turquoise right now).  The posing, however is O-U-T.

  • OUT … The top of the suit is BORING.  Love the earring though!

  • Beverly Kozma

    Hand those earrings over here.

  • The heels saved this… barely.

  • Allison Shannon

    In! She’s fab.

  • Don Hackett

IN.  look at that tiny little waist.  only thing i’d change is i’d tone down the orange-y lipstick.  i love the earrings.

    posted by sleah in norcal

  • lalahartma

I do love the top. But there’s some thing off…maybe the crotch? Not sure.

  • MissFern

I love this so much!  And the earrings work (my humble opinion).

  • mhleta

Imagine this outfit in white with these earrings and makeup. Gorgeous, right? The hair is ok from the back, but off from the front. It’s giving her Gumby/ head.

  • IN if it’s not too late…great look for her, including the earrings…

  • fashionzombie

    IN. Love it.
