IN or OUT: Rose Byrne in Balenciaga

Posted on January 25, 2013

It’s a very simple question, darlings. Is this outfit too plain for its own good or not?

Rose Byrne attends the UK Premiere of ‘I Give It A Year’ in London in a Balenciaga gown paired with Charlotte Olympia pumps and a Thale Blanc clutch.

Well? Is it?

IN! No!

OUT! Yes!

We think it’s pretty, but perhaps a bit on the plain side. Then again, we think something simple in a pretty color is sometimes all a gal needs when she wants to make an impression. If there’s one thing that’s really not working for us, it’s the shoes. They’re too heavy.

In other judgmental news, J Lo’s attempt at virginity was met with hoots, hollers, and a vote of OUT.

  • I think she looks lovely, top to bottom. IN!

    • Alyssa

I agree! A simple, elegant look. IN!

    • Me too. A lovely dress, pretty hair, simple makeup, a cute clutch. Done.

    • KSpence

“Lovely” is spot-on. I agree: In.

    •  My initial reaction was that she looks lovely as well but the more I looked the more I disliked it. The waist is wonky and the neckline is doing something funny with her girls. I have to disagree @kiltdntiltd:disqus, it’s an OUT.

      •  What works for one, doesn’t for another, and that’s part of what makes life so darned intriguing!

        •  So true. And I’m definitely not one to argue that what I say is the only correct way of thinking! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

    • 3boysful

I’m with the IN crowd!  (Tho maybe some big earrings?)

    • I agree – this is definitely an IN for me. I think it’s pretty much perfect, actually.

  • SRQkitten

IN for the dress, OUT for the shoes.

    • MoHub

Dang! You beat me to it!

    • L.

I say OUT, based on the shoes alone.

    • Seriously! I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought so!

  • those huge clunky shoes and their height make the dress look like it is too short. I also tend to like her in more jewel tones.

    • ballerinawithagun

    • AthenaJ

Exactly x 2. Those shoes are all wrong for the length of the dress. I do think the dress itself is lovely though.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • lalahartma

In!  Though, it’s an odd length and she could use some jewelry.

    • Yes she could!  She looks v nice, but statement jewelry could have put this over the top!  In

    • RebeccaKW

Exactly my thoughts.  In, while wishing for some jewels and a better length.  I like the color on her, though.

Oh, and in regards to J Lo.  I saw on the yahoo page this a.m., that she’s broken the style rules and still managed to wow.  It was in regards to that dress from the In/Out post (which I did like on her), but the point of the article was that she was wearing white after Labor Day.  Which, I didn’t think was an issue any more.  I guess I’m not a ‘style maven.’

  • Athenrein

  • schadenfreudelicious

living proof that you really can wear that bridesmaid dress again…and that silly platform ruins the shoes for me..OUT

  • Needs jewelry, but she looks beautiful.  She got her booms out of her face.

  • mmc2315

Oh…I don’t like the drop waist yoke thing on the dress, nor the color.  The neckline looks lovely on her.  The shoes are, yes, too heavy.  Not right.

Overall, I have to say OUT.

  • VioletFem

IN. Despite the shoes, it is a very pretty look.

  • In, she looks great. I would have chosen different shoes but they don’t kill the look.

  • gsk241

I think she looks great.  IN!

  • nannypoo

It’s beautiful on her. The shoes are too heavy, and I hate the randomly placed rings. A statement bracelet would have been nice.

  • I wish the dress ended mid-shin.  And I”m not a fan of those shoes.  At first I thought it was too plain, but the more I looked the better I liked the style of it.  The neckline is very nice on her.  LOVE the clutch.

  • Tatiana Luján

My only problem with this look is that the length is odd. I wish it were shorter, tea length –  in wich case I would like the shoes paired with it – or longer, in wich case I think the dress calls for less heavy shoes.
Anyway, she looks very pretty and I think the dress is subtle, not plain simple.

  • In – I think it is sleek and simple and she is very nearly smiling.

  • I like the simplicity but add a bit of length and for the love of all that’s holy, change the shoes.

  • jonnyf8

IN.  the dress is pretty and she gets about 1,000 pts. for the makeup.  She’s never looked prettier.

  • IN. I think she looks lovely and that clutch is very pretty, although I wish she would at least attempt to look happy when she’s getting her picture taken on the red carpet. She always looks like she’s on the verge of tears.

  • Sobaika

IN! Very simple and pretty. I like seeing her without the severity of the bob.

    • SassieCassy

that was a very chic haircut but it could cit a bitch

  • choco

    IN. love the clutch

  • lilibetp

The dress is very pretty, although maybe an odd length.  The color and shape are working for me.  The shoes are totally wrong, though.

  • Diego!

IN! It’s simple but it suits her like a glove. I don’t like the shoes either, though…

  • Carrieanno

IN.  Refreshingly elegant in its simplicity.

  • imperfectlaura

If the shoes wouldn’t have been so poorly chosen, it would definitely be in for me. As it is, I’m giving it barely an IN.

  • Christy Cricow

  • I dunno all I can think is she must be a freakin popsicle.  I realize this is the woes of the lady stars in which they must wear strapless gowns outside in the middle of winter, but look at all the spectators bundled up and such.  I hate the shoes with it too.  I could see this in warmer weather with a strappy sandal.  but right now she just looks cold to me.  or is that the secret to celebrity?  having an epic tolerance for cold?

  • IN, gorgeous. Simple but lovely is never a problem

  • There’s something a little funny about the length, but still an overwhelming IN.

  • msdamselfly

Resounding IN! So great to see the focus on the woman, not the outfit, because of the simplicity of the look

  • IN!

  • IN. She looks really beautiful.

  • LLuL

You know, I don’t think it’s her color. Point possibly proven by the fact that she’s compensated by smearing blush all over her face like a five-year-old who has discovered herself alone in the bathroom with mom’s makeup bag.

    • kschwarting

I agree–the blush is way too much, and those shoes are awful.  However, something about this is still an IN for me–it’s easy and pretty, and she looks comfortable.

  • OUT. Chop some length off this dress and it could manageable.

  • lehen

  • ringthing

    IN. Pretty.

  • BrooklynBomber

It’s strange at the bottom: the length and the ruffle. The shoes are TOTALLY wrong (plus, I’m so tired of the stilettos-on-a-small-platform look). The only thing I really like is the bag. OUT.

  • tessasouthworth

OUT for the overall look, by virtue of the fact that the shoes and purse, while beautiful on their own, are fighting with the dress.  Beautiful hair and makeup, though.

  • I love it until you get to the boring shoes- she needed an interesting pair of shoes to pull it together. The black with the platforms just look heavy.

  • Haaate the weird flouncey thing. OUT.  Love the clutch, though.

  • belfebe

IN, although I think she could have used a belt.  But she looks lovely.

  • I don’t mind the shoes, but that little layer of flounce at the hem is making me twitch.  Still, overall, she looks poised and pretty, so I’m going with IN.

  • Bridesmaid..the end.

  • Janet B

Something is bothering me about this look. From the waist up she looks very pretty.  Maybe the gathers at the hip or the length? I’m probably in the minority here but OUT.

  • queeniethebold

“Lovely” is the word. IN. Her skin is so beautiful, and the color of the dress complements it wonderfully well. Maybe a necklace, though? i actually love the bag and shoes, too.

  • Scrolldown CLUNK. Those shoes. Sigh. Out.

  • mjude

  • twocee

In, but I think some jewelry would’ve kicked it up a notch.

  • It’s a gorgeous dress that doesn’t need a lot of styling. But there’s something off about the length — maybe other posters are right, and it’s the heavy shoes that are throwing off the proportions.

  • Dhammadina

In. It is beautiful (in a first rose of summer kind of way) and she is beautiful.

  • tereliz

I love the dress, but I think the styling is too disco. It should be more elegant.

So I guess that’s an OUT from me.

  • RedRaven617

IN. A piece of jewelry would’ve helped, but I like it.

  • Deidre Robbers

In!!! Love the color on her.

  • MilaXX

Ugh! Scrolldown fug. The shoes nearly kill the look. I like everything else so I’ll give it a small IN.

  • hillmad

IN! I think she is one of the tiny percentage of women who looks great in that color! Just gorgeous!

I also agree that some jewelry for a bit of sparkle would have gone a long way. But, I’m sick to death though of women hobbling around on these ridiculous platform pumps.

  • The shoes are TERRible. But the dress is a win for me…so I have to say IŃ

  • nnbb

I do not like the length or the constant sneer, but the color and styling are pretty.

  • Jessica Rowe

    IN.  Needs a necklace.

  • IN. Lovely shade of pink, accessories which manage to be both classic and a little kicky. Should have been floor length, though.

  • teensmom99

    OUT.  Just not attractive.

  • In, though she could use some killer earrings with this.

  • In, In, In!

  • So uninspired, and uninspiring. OUT.

  • Pennymac

In. But rather bridesmaid-ey. Shoes are wrong.

  • If anything, the length looks either too short or too long, like a little girl trying on mommy’s clothes (actually, it seems the shoes add to that impression to my eye). But the color is so very pretty and the drape of the garment is very elegant. I would say in.

  • I think it would look better with some additional accessories — bracelets, maybe, and definitely earrings. She looks unfinished.

  • Nazzzy

    IN, love it

  • Jangle57

I think she looks lovely. IN

  • IN, but the top half fits kind of weird.

  • calimon

OUT. Those shoes are a travesty!

  • Pants_are_a_must

IN because she looks stylish, lovely and for once, not trying to work a look far too complex for her.

  • stubbornthoughts

I think she look elegant as hell. IN.

  • Cute look, IN

  • Imasewsure

I don’t mind the simplicity of the look but I hate the color…. still it’s not enough to make it an out so it’s IN for me

  • thesevenendless

Yeah, it does look a little plain, but considering the craziness Rose was sporting for a while (along with those AWFUL booms) I think she needed to go back to the basics.  And she looks beautiful 🙂

  • stellamaris73

In, but I agree that the shoes are all wrong.  The overall look is delicate, feminine, and simple. Love the soft hair, rosy lip, and pretty drape of the dress.

  • The awkward length makes the dress a bit interesting but the color makes the whole look sort of flat. I love pink and i love that pink, but it’s too sweet.

  • elirt

IN! I love it. She looks great – nothing wrong with simple and I don’t think it’s plain.

  • In. It is a little plain, but hair and make up are gorge and the dress fits like a dream and is a stunning color.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

IN – the shoes are wrong but the clutch is to die for.

  • Sara__B

She does look lovely, but, yes, it is too simple for an evening red carpet. That makes this the prettiest OUT ever.

  • padma sallah

IN. The shoes should have been switched for something more delicate looking but everything else looks lovely! Very fresh and elegant and the make-up and hair look pretty.

  • bailey debruynkops

out because the shoes should not be black

  • UglyTalents

OUT. I like the dress well enough, but it’s wedding-guest (like, that super-pretty cousin whom you secretly hate), not red carpet. but the shoes and clutch are wrong. … The shoes are making the hem length look weird to me. A begrudging OUT.

  • PeaceBang

I want that clutch!!! The shoes are way too heavy, as you said, but this is real purdy otherwise and gets an IN from me.

  • CaTobes

IN! But I wish she had some sort of statement bracelet or earrings to punctuate the look; the color washes her out.

  • Judy_J

It’s a lovely dress, and I give it an IN.  I’m with you on the shoes, however.  They are much too heavy for this confection of a dress.

  • formerlyAnon

(You’ve trained my eye well. My caveat was going to be “the shoes are too heavy.”)

  • Very pretty dress, but I think it’s a skosh too long.  Shoes are a definite OUT.

  • alaskahyoung

It just looks odd to me. Out!

  • IN.

  • Jessi03

In!  She looks so pretty.  I do hate the shoes, though.

  • AlinaValero

out, looks like a sound of music nightgown.

  • Out.  Too bridesmaidy.

  • alyce1213

IN.  It seems simple, but it’s actually more complicated  than it appears at first glance and it’s well constructed.
I like the flounce and the unexpected length it’s at.  The color is wonderful on her, but it’s not for everyone.
    I hate the shoes.

  • In with the dress, and agree shoes are too heavy. Love the clutch.

  • tallgirl1204

I was thinking “out” until I saw Heidi Klum’s Tonight Show disaster.  One of my fashion rules is to always leave them wishing they could see a little more– not “I wish she would cover up– I don’t know where to look.”  This outfit seems a little overly modest and plain, but it’s an “in,” for leaving a little mystery.

  • In, although I agree about the shoes. Love the clutch, though. It’s a classy, elegant, grown-up look. You don’t see those very often.

  • Joyce VG

She looks stunning in that bridesmaid dress. IN!

  • AuntJentie

  • RocknRollmom

In—replacing the shoes in my mind with Kiernan Shipka’s!  Or something like that.  Love everything else.  Sometimes understated is a good thing.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    in, polish after all

  • warnerave

    IN..she looks simple and elegant!!

  • carpediva

Hate the shoes but still way IN. Love the cowl.

  • m0r0

Love the dress but not on her skin tone. OUT.

  • B_C_J

BEAUTIFUL! Simplicity at its very best! IN!

  • crash1212

IN. Although I wouldn’t have been mad at her if she’d done a bit of bling around the neck/ear area.

  • in.  i love the simplicity.  she still looks like she’s heartbroken, though, and trying to smile through the tears.  now i’m all worried.

  • OUT. Pick a length, lose the shoes.

  • It needs a belt or something. I want to say “in,” but it’s a tepid OUT from me.

  • ChiKat67

I would add a diamond tennis bracelet, otherwise IN!  Great color, great fit, great makeup, love the clutch!

  • jw_ny

I got an uneasy feeling at first glance that I haven’t been able to shake.  It’s not awful and I don’t mind simple, but there are elements that I dislike: the tight fitted panel at her hips, the flounce at the hem (70’s), the length (should be shorter or longer), and those shoes…which really are focus pulling.  I think she could have used a sparkly bracelet or two as well.

  • I love the fit on the waist, in. Though I don’t understand why black shoes, much less those black shoes.

  • E. D.

IN.  Even though I hate the shoes, at least the bag and shoes are good together.

  • TSkot

    It’s fine: IN

  • ThaliaMenninger

IN. But I’m with you on the shoes. They’re too heavy and clunky and neither the black nor the red looks right with this pretty coral pink.

  • Dot

She looks simply lovely — some earrings at the very least would be nice, though. I’m not sure I get the shoe choice, either.

  • elemspbee

Hmm. I’m voting OUT on this not because I think it’s too plain. It’s quite beautiful, elegant, and does have some design elements that take it beyond plain. I hate the pleating at the bottom of the dress.
and the shoes–hideous with the dress!

  • EEKstl

OUT.  The shoes ruin what would have been a MEH.  A belt or important piece of jewelry was warranted, in addition to better shoes.

  • shawnhunter

I’d go with simple, but elegant. IN.

  • throwaneyeonthis

  • kikisayshi

I’d be interested to see how this looked on the runway. The shoes are too heavy and the hem length is weird, but it’s a pretty color and a nice shape. Not sure if this is allowed on an in or out post, but I am simply indifferent.

  • appliquer

In with reservations. Love, love, love the dress on her and it’s simplicity. Do agree that the shoes are not right and I don’t care for the clutch, either.

  • Carly Warnock

  • IN!  I love this dress!!

  • marilyn

Out.  This was a movie premiere in London.  She needed to step up the accessories.  Wrong shoes, okay purse, but where are the earrings, bracelets, etc.?

  • julesze

I think it’s an IN! The dress is a little plain, but I actually like the shoes and clutch!

  • Lilak

I had a scroll-down problem with this one.  Just when I was starting to like the dress, the skirt went all Little House on the Prairie.  And the accessories belong to another ensemble altogether.

And yet – in defiance of all styling infractions – Miss Byrne still manages to look quite fetching!  That’s my benchmark, so I gotta give her an IN.

  • MoHub

In for the dress; out for the shoes.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

OUT. The only reason I say this is because the shoes RUIN the entire look.  When will these obnoxious platform hooves go away?!

  • In! Beautiful color for her.

  • Classic, pretty and elegant. IN!

  • altalinda

In, despite the shoes.  The color and design are pleasant, the clutch is interesting, hair and makeup nice and, best of all, she’s smiling and looks pretty relaxed.

  • OUT. I quite like the dress, but the combination of the shoes and clutch seem off. I’m still going to love the loss of those bangs. She is gorgeous from the neck up.

  • librarygrrl64

IN because I love the dress and the color on her, LOVE the clutch, and her hair and makeup are beautiful. But I hate the shoes (way too heavy and dark with this) and I wanted a delicate necklace or something up there.

  • chitowndg

In.  Some eye-catching detail, and, I am surprised, the shoes don’t bother me so much.

  • guest2visits

Plain, but very beautiful and working for her. Shoes could be swapped out for a different pair of black, maybe pointy heels.

  • LaSylphide

In. Earrings would have been nice; shoes good; LOVE the clutch; color good on her.

  • mhleta

It’s such a beautiful dress, but alas, in this color, not remotely a “gown”. This dress says “Day Time Lawn Party” and the shoes say, “Black Tie”. In addition, when on the red carpet,(I can only assume, since it’s never come up for me personally) it’s probably good to consider whether or not the color you’re wearing clashes with the carpet upon which you’ll be standing. I believe this clashes rather badly. She looks incredibly pretty in this dress, and I love the clutch and shoes on their own, but given the sum total, the armchair stylist in me is going to very quietly say “out.”

  • ScarlettHarlot

In – she looks really sweet. She often goes for hard or edgy and winds up looking awkward, so this simple look is a nice change.

  • anotherkate

Out. I think the shoes are winter while the dress is spring, and I wish she had worn bigger/more jewelry. You’re a movie stah, for heaven’s sake!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

IN, she looks soft and pretty. I envy her genes. The shoes are a bit on the heavy side, but they also keep the whole thing from going twee/bridesmaid/70s.

  • Too plain, but not enough to take it out.  A little jewelry and a few inches off the hem would’ve clinched it, but I still say IN.

  • I’m getting a sort of Bridehead Revisited vibe from this dress and I can’t quite figure out why. Regardless, that makes it an IN for me, although those shoes are a most emphatic OUT. God, those are horrid.

  • Kathryn Wyman

She looks beautiful – and at first the length of the dress threw me off, but the more I look at it the more I love it. IN!

  • j_anson

Definitely in. Maybe one more piece of jewelry – but I think they wanted to put the focus on her face and the blush in her cheeks, and I think it works. And the clutch adds visual interest.

  • It needs something, but not enough to throw it into OUT territory.  The color is perfect on her.

  • neofashionista

    I think this is gorgeous
She looks so good recently I think it is becuase she is no longer TOTALLY emaciated I hated when she was too skinny

  • Nonmercisansfacon

    IN! She looks lovely.

  • GorgeousThings

She looks great, so I’ll give her an IN.

That said, I have a problem with the dress. Several problems, actually. The color and the cowl neck make it veer into bridesmaid territory, the length is awkward, the hip yoke makes her bum look weird in several of those shots, and the flounce at the bottom is waaaaay too Laura Ashley.

    The dress gets an OUT.

  • barbarienne

I’m with you, this is too bland for the venue. She looks lovely, but not finished enough. Lukewarm out.

  • nerdykitten

IN!!! A breath of fresh air on the RC

  • Judy_S

IN. I was scrolling down and for once was pleasantly surprised–I like the short length. She looks perfectly polished and lovely.

  • IN

  • TheLaurenJean

    In. Girl is positively glowing.

  • decormaven

In. I think this is one of her best looks. It helps that she looks more relaxed than she has in previous appearances. The color is perfect with her complexion.

  • mom2ab

    I’m bored.  Out.

  • In! Literal embodiment of Rose. She looks charming. Ignoring the shoes.

  • Jill Morino

Yes. Needs a necklace atnthe very least.

  • PaulaBerman

Don’t love the shoes but the dress is pretty great. I want it. IN.

  • libraangel

I thought it was o.k. (except for lack of jewelry), then I scrolled down. ARGH! Too Short! Yikes, and those shoes! Horrible! OUT!

  • Good lord, I was finally able to log in here from my phone!! 🙂

I say in. I’m a sucker for a simple pretty pink dress.

  • amaranth16

Gorgeous. I have such a crush on her.

  • ZnSD

    GORGE. In.

  • I can forgive the shoes. IN.

  • kimmeister

In.  So refreshing to see her with a soft hairstyle.  I don’t like the construction of where the skirt meets the waist, but that’s minor.

  • MzzPants

A slim belt could’ve added, but still IN.

  • trisker

  • PinkLemon

you WERQ that rose, Rose!! IN

  • girliecue

In but I wish it were a different color.

  • Buffy

    IN!  Sometimes simple is best

  • Tigerfly

In, but those shoes are awful.

  • Trang Nguyen

In! Simple, but well made and incredibly flattering. Kind of reminds me of the iconic green dress from Atonement.

  • Boring dress in a beautiful color (with a neckline that should have died in the 90s) and I am really sick of those shoes. OUT. I do, however, like the clutch.

  • In.  no such thing as too simple with this celeb crowd that is so usually way over the top

  • demidaemon

IN. My only quibbles is the length, which could have been fixed with a shorter heel, and the shoes, which are definitively too heavy for the look. Other wise, from the top of her head to the bottom of the dress, she looks pretty and glowing.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Out. I can’t with those shoes and that weird dress length.

  • In. Agree with the poster upthread who said the shoes counterbalanced any tweeness in the dress. Love the clutch with this look.

  • margaret meyers

In.  How can she look so lovely and be out?

  • In 🙂 This dress makes me feel happy its so lovely. She used her clutch to make the celebrity statement

  • Trisha26

Out. Hate the shoes and the weird ruffle hem.

  • Jarethee

IN! She looks stunning. I love her, not quite sure why, but she just has a special, ethereal loveliness to her.

  • Frank Lithium

I’m willing to ignore the shoes, so IN.

  • quiltrx

IN.  Sometimes a pretty girl just needs a pretty dress.  It has just enough detail to make it interesting and not too simple.  And she clearly feels happy wearing it, which is always a plus for me.

  • The dress is gorgeous, but those shoes are all wrong for it.

  • My kingdom for some earrings, but she’s still definitely in. Mostly love the look.

  • AnneElliot

It was perfect until I got past her ankles.  HATE the shoes, and the length of the dress.  From the knees up, she’s gorgeous, especially the hair and makeup.

  • IN!!!!  Pretty! Pretty! Pretty! and I love the shoes, which is odd because platform pumps are just weird.

  • in! she looks lovely. simple, but lovely.

  • sleepycat

    Out, sisterwife!

  • Louise Bryan

She looked quite elegant….right up to when I got to the hem and the shoes.  *CLANG*  OUT

  • Samantha Irene

Out. The shoes – they kill everything the dress is trying to be. Nice try with the clutch, but please try again.

  • DinahR

IN  Shoes and purse are the interest.  The dress is simple and beautiful.  Lovely color on her.

  • IN.

  • Kathleen B

IN  – it’s plain but it works

  • Verascity

Are you kidding? This is the best she’s looked in years. Hell, it’s a WERQ from me. IN!

  • IN, but lighter shoes would have made it better.

  • The dress works, but saying no to the shoes.  Still an IN, though.

  • BarbaraAnnBruch

Don’t like the shoes at all.

  • in

  • Pterodactyl111

    IN! Elegant and lovely.

  • TLJezebel

The length is odd, but that could be because of the black velvet cinder blocks on her feet.  Otherwise gorgeous.

  • Iroqhard

This is the most soft and feminine I’ve seen her hair, and it looks SO MUCH BETTER. I love the pink color against her skin. And I don’t mind the shoes, really. IN.

  • maggiemaybe

    Perfection. She’s an IN!

  • paige wichman

Is it me, or does she always look like she is going to weeeeeep?

  • ccm800

    IN as hell

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In, but a great necklace or earrings would have made it an IN!

  • subwaycars

I would have liked it better floor length, but it’s still a lovely look. In.

  • IN, but yellow card  for those shoes. The platforms threw me. Should’ve been a flat toe.

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxqyz

    legs up, perfect. feet, wtf?

  • Elleachaudaucul

Out, solely for the shoes (pun intended).

  • IN! Simple yet chic.

  • It needs a belt or a necklace, but it’s pretty. In.

  • Donna Schmidt

In, although I’d like a necklace

  • melanie0866

OUT.  The shoes are way too fierce for that girly dress.  Which I hate.  It looks like something from 1982.
