IN or OUT: Kate Beckinsale in Gucci

Posted on January 14, 2013

This dress makes us feel a little funny.

Kate Beckinsale attends the 14th Annual Warner Bros. And InStyle Golden Globe Awards After Party in a Gucci dress paired with a Neil Lane necklace and a Judith Leiber clutch.

Gucci Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Bette Franke

Not in some sort of weird, pants-moving kind of way. Just that it should be a dress that we hate – because we normally don’t like that kind of dusty pink at all – but something about this just looks chic to us. And the hair looks kind of goofy, but overall, we’re responding really positively to the look. Maybe it’s the gold accents.

It’s up to you to talk us down.

Vote Now!

IN! I dig it too, T Lo!

OUT! Are you nuts? It’s totally ’80s Barbie!

Voting on Lucy Liu’s Marie Antoinette moment is still open and awaiting your bitchy opinion.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Mmm. Out.  I’m not feeling this one at all, even in an ’80s Barbie way.  I think the shape is unflattering, and it looks like it’s sliding down her body.

  • me no likey — looks like the color of a hospital waiting room or a mcdonald’s in the 80s.

    • My thought was Pepto Bismol, but McD’s in the 80s works too!  Small out due to the fun gold accents.

  • twocee

    Out, out, out.

She’s sporting mini-babyheads and she looks like a bobblehead with that hairstyle.

    • Yeah, the total effect is very artificial. Can’t get behind it.

  • FrayedMachine

I feel like I should hate it but I can’t. I think most of it is that her attitude makes it more appealing. … well that and the accessories are really gorgeous. Loving that necklace!

    • AwwwTrouble

I agree.  I think the necklace helps make it work.  I don’t understand the fear/hatred of jewelry on the red carpet.  So many of these red carpet strapless dresses are just crying out for a necklace!

    • StellaZafella

I agree with you. And I’d also like to add that, maybe – in part  it’s because the dress itself, regardless of design taste, is impeccably made and worn…not a wrinkle, not a seam out of place…faint praise when the first real sit down and the lap krinkle alone could make the whole look go south.

  • Introspective

out. it doesnt look good from any angle, as its fug from the front and a horror from the side.

that oddly placed peplum is making her look completely bigger than she is, and the rest of the dress is a column’s worth of yawn.

  • MilaXX

IN, I think because the dress has a little color to it and she has a olive skintone it works. Minor quibble, I like the hair, but hate the tendrils.

    • mjude

i am with you on this MilaXX.  i too give it an IN.

  • IN!  It’s different and I like it.

  • OUT. The color should never be worn by anyone. Ever.

  • Sobaika

Somehow, she’s making the impossible work. That alone makes it an In for me.

  • I really don’t like it.

  • Annabelle Archer

IN because it’s totally 80s Barbie.

  • I dislike the boob valance, as well as the way it looks like one hair stylist did one side of her hair, and another hair stylist did the other. Out.

    • Judy_S

Well said, though I think the ruffle might have worked if… I’m not sure what. It was smaller, softer? It falls funny. OUT.

      • golden_valley

Maybe there are too many layers of ruffles?  They stand out too much while the rest of the dress looks like it is slinky jersey or something.

  • Christy Cricow

I like it. Sleek and almost sculptural. Count me ‘in’.

  • It’s that awful blushy pink AND it’s a “towel” dress…but at least it has an interesting silhouette and a simple design that it kinda coming across as chic? Well, I dig the gold accessories (especially that necklace) and I think she looks good so I’m calling it an IN.

  • altalinda

    Lovely.  In.

  • Violina23

    yick. out!

  • Going with OUT.  I think I like it better in the color used on the runway, but even then I’m not feeling it.

  • j_anson

In. It’s clearly meant to be experimental rather than conventionally pretty. She’s got the figure to wear it, and while it’s not The Best Use of Weird Couture Ever, I think she’s pulling it off. The hair is my main beef; it works from almost every angle except head on, but, y’know, that’s kind of an important angle.

  • Rand Ortega

I don’t like the color. The original yellow was much more interesting.

  • Jessi03

Late 70s bridesmaid Barbie wearing mid-80s Barbie’s accessories.

  • Emily Giovanni

I love it. In. She looks like a flower.

  • Mary_Shelley

Out – you only wear flounces like that when you’re trying to hide something…I doubt she has to hide anything, and regardless it looks awful…

  • love it… On her the dusty rose works.  But adore the acid yellow on the model!

  • Allison Woods

Nope. Too weird, even in a better colour.

  • nannypoo

I like it. Why does she need so many men holding her hand? Don’t you just follow the carpet?

  • Janet B

Like the dress, not loving the color. I wonder if she could wear the runway color?

  • decormaven

Split vote here. Not fond of the gown’s color, but I’m crushing hard on that vintage metallic clutch. That necklace has an 80s vibe- it works in this setting.

  • ralish

Out. Bland and overly-ruffled. Looks like the skirt’s on top!

  • PastryGoddess

I think ya’ll are tired of looking at dresses all day.  OUT

  • meowing

I like the bust treatment–is a bust peplum a bustlum?–looks feminine and not over the top.  Guess rest of it needs to be simple to compensate.  Color is a little blah to me, but this blushy/dusty trend won’t die.

  • Out. It’s just too strange and I can neither call it flattering nor hideous. And she’s getting baby heads from a dress that doesn’t appear to be tight at all.

  • greyhoundgirl

In.  Because I like the retro vibe and it’s different.

  • Le_Sigh

OUT.  That outfit belongs to Viola Davis who would have made it resplendent.

  • kolokOlchik

This is a very unflattering dress. A boob duster is not anyone’s friend. Her makeup is very pretty and soft, but the dress is a big fat OUT

  • AnnaleighBelle

In.  I think I kinda like it.  I just don’t know why.

  • HobbitGirl

    NO. Titruffles always out.

  • Out. Boob frills are no one’s friend.

  • Kayceed

The more I look at it, the less I like it. We have the gone-but-not-forgotten dusty rose hue, tiered bosom ruffles and a rather ugly necklace to give it all some “edge.” Not feeling it. Sort of a trifecta of not-great 80s trends. Out.

  • anne.landre

Is that a floppy dog cone she’s wearing? Out.

  • It’s befuddling to me too that I like this. IN please.

  • Pink and brown, it’s like a raspberry chocolate truffle. Which is a good thing, In!

  • GorgeousThings

This is one of those dresses that I bet looks amazing when it moves (silk crepe is fabulous that way) but doesn’t look as good in still photos. I much prefer the pink to the original, and she looks fantastic in that color. She’s probably one of the few women, along with Cathy Cambridge, who can wear that color well.

  • In. Simple and chic and the gold accents are making it work. Hate the hair and what I can see of the shoes.

  • Jen Sickels

    jellyfish! O-U-T.

  • IN for me! This is the best she’s looked in a while.

  • savicevic

  • stagmania

    OUT. Yuck.

  • Stubenville

Hate the color, hate the boob ruffles. Out.

  • Out.

  • BrooklynBomber

I just like that she’s smiling. Ever since they replaced Original Kate with the Kate Beckinsale Barbie, you don’t see that as much. Not loving the dress, though.

  • peachy

the way the fabric drapes is absolutely stunning, and so very, very tactile. i just want to run my fingertips down her thigh to feel that fabric. yup, the color is a granny-shade of pink; the ruffles were plucked off of granny’s bedroom Kuntry Kurtains, and granny herself styled Kate’s fingercurls with her old timey curlin’ wand. keep the fabic; ditch the look.

  • Natalie Bryan

OUT. And I hate the hair.

  • f_yeah_marie

Out.  The ’80s Barbie comparison is spot on.

  • Out, it’s just not flattering.

  • libraangel

I feel like “I don’t know” but I guess I must give it an OUT because of the dusty rose color you mentioned, and I don’t like the way the flounce poofs out from the side.

  • stoprobbers

    Looove her necklace.

    …That’s all I love.

  • jw_ny

not loving the dress, color or hair, but overall she looks quite polished.   He makeup is very pretty.

  • flower753

Out. Don’t like the boobruffle, don’t like the color.

  • It’s one of those dresses that should, in theory, look terrible, but she’s making it work.  IN.

  • I hate the 90s hair, but the dress is pretty!

  • EverybodysStarling

Peplums are bad in general, but boobpeplums are the worst. OUT (but she ist still so so beautiful.)

  • aristida_girl

boob curtains will always be OUT for me

  • Kate4queen

Out, that ruffle is all wrong it makes my eye twitch.

  • Nazzzy

I’m not a fan of the dress, but she looks great. IN

  • Lily-Rygh

This is a Code Fog to me: it looks okay at a quick glance, but the more you look at it the more disturbing it becomes.

I like how light and airy it looks, but I have to go OUT on this one.

  • rissa42210

Absolutely not.  No.  Out.  She has boob curtains and the rest of it just says “feed me!”

  • crash1212

IN. She looks sleek and modern…and while that color isn’t my cuppa – she looks really pretty in it.

  • Michelle Cunningham

Her poor breasts obviously have the flu – they are sneezing into giant handkerchiefs.  OUT

  • Judy_J

The cafe curtains on the bodice are just wrong.  And that color screams Mother of the Bride.  OUT.

  • lalahartma

  • bailey debruynkops

    IN, fun ‘n flirty~

  • Ana_ragu

OUT! It is a dress made out of Silly Putty!

  • I’m not really feeling this, but I don’t hate it… I think the yellow color from the runway was much prettier, but this pink isn’t bad. And the huge boob-ruffle should irritate me, but there’s still something flattering about the dress overall. So, I give this a tepid IN.

  • MzzPants

The dress is fine.  The accessories are fine.  They just don’t belong together.  The necklace, while lovely, is too heavy and clean-lined for that dress.  And the hair is ‘NO’.

  • No.  It looks like prom 1975

  • d4divine

  • IN! I like it!

  • Terrible_Person

Out. She’s making it work as well as possible, but the shape of the dress is pretty terrible. Even worse than the color.

On a more positive note, I like the hairstyle and make-up. And the accessories are gorgeous! I covet both the necklace and the clutch.

  • ampg

IN. I love that dusty pink on a brunette, and the gold accents really make it.

  • I kinda like this, in an 80s retro way!

  • Ooh, there is nothing good here. OUT.

  • I have no desire to talk you down.  It’s oddly charming and different.  IN.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN, but just barely. The accessories and the hunk arm candy help.

  • the purpose of this design is to kill a lot of fabric (all bias-cut) but save the seamstress tons of work.

  • Louise Bryan

OUT.  I really hate that three layer boob apron.  And I suppose she had to go pink rather than that delicious yellow of the runway version, but pink is boring.

  • 80s Barbie.

I made my Barbies dresses like this out of ruffly socks.

  • ojosazules

  • Pennymac

OUT. Color plus ruffle = NO.

  • Zippypie

OUT – She looks like she has a dust ruffle wrapped around her boobage.

  • zelavie

Out.  It looks like she wrapped a frilly bath towel around herself.

  • JulieTy

That dress looks sort of like a penis.

  • Warrior89

Remember those swimsuits in the eighties that had a ruffle across the top like that?  OUT.

    • Pennymac

OMG I had one of those! Completely forgot about it though!

  • Carla_Charlton

Out because the color is boring (I liked the original yellow), because the necklace doesn’t look good with it AT ALL, and because the hair is so small-town prom.  However, her skin looks fantastic and I like it that the dress is so perfectly unwrinkled.

  • snarkykitten

totally 80s bride barbie after your little brother cut it up

  • IN! chic, fashion, and a bit sexy!

  • Nariya

Hilarious! Can you imagine walking by a woman dressed in that little boob-tent without bursting into laughter? I can’t.  Out.

  • CeeQ

    Tits ruffle is always OUT.
But I do like the gold accents! Just wish they went with the different dress =D

  • It probably looks a lot better when she’s moving.

  • Trisha26

Out. Not a fan of the boob flounce. Kate looks fine but her hair needs low lights, highlights, it’s too Clairol one-note.

  • RebeccaKW

In.  I think I would hate it on a lot of other people, but it works for KB.

  • Anniebet

I dunno, from the side it’s like that bodice is snowplowing a path for her. Outsies.

  • Snailstsichr

OUT. This is a nice color on her, but the ruffle is horrid and the jewelry doesn’t go with the dress.

  • suzq

In.  She looks tons better than the model.  It’s a tough dress to wear but she and her push-up bra really make it work!

  • Virginia Anderson

I can’t get past the 90s Bridesmaid Hair Tendrils.

  • marilyn

    In.  She pulled it off.

  • nicole seligman

out. it’s like the napkin dress, but all the volume is around her boobs. not flattering from any angle.

  • Verascity

    NOPE. OUT.

  • Call me Bee

Hmmmm…  The color is fab–even though it’s an odd one, it compliments her skin tone.  The gold accents are chic, and this style has been around for a long while.  The proportion seems to be a bit off…maybe if the ruffle were only one layer instead of three….
I guess I like it ok–I give it an IN.  Just a itty-bitty baby one.

  • Sue_Asponte

In! It’s an interesting and different dress that only someone interesting could pull off. And she does. Good for her.

  • out.  she looks too fem-bot barbie to me.

  • librarygrrl64

O-U-T, OUT! I hate everything about it. Hair, makeup, gown shape, gown color, everything.

  • IN. In my cerebral mind, I think I should hate it. But it is an interesting dress and styled well. She looks lovely yet different. Thumb’s up.

  • This is awful. It’s better in the pink than in the yellow on the model but no one likes a saggy tit ruffle.

  • EEKstl

IN – I know, crazy, right?  It all shouldn’t work, including the “Ice Storm” accessories, but somehow, weirdly, it does.  And even better in that dusty pink (which I usually abhor too), than that citrus color (which I usually love).

  • out….its like her mamaries (sp?) boobs, have all dried up and are just flapping in the breeze (or if she were some odd aquatic thing, flapping in the tides). Also don’t like the cut under the arms…not really sure WHO could pull this off- maybe a Project Runway challenge? (make something a guppy would wear!)…(is the show over yet?)

  • Imasewsure

Slight IN… better on her than the model and I hate her hair from straight on but not bad enough for an OUT to me

  • kmk05

Haha! OUT. It is especially unflattering when viewed from the side. Perfectly accessorised, though! I covet that bag.

  • In, with the addendum that her hair is terrible.  Q-tip effect.

  • msftmargarita

Out. Color is bad, hair is bad, and I can’t get over the top ruffle.

  • That color always reminds me of The Thornbirds and Meggie–Ashes of Roses. It also induces late ’70s PTSD, but that’s another story. That gigantic breast bib is a deal-breaker, however. Out.

  • Joyce VG

IN. She makes it look great.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Out, but mostly because of the hair. Her jewelry is wonderful.

  • No. It looks like she hiked up a crazy, over-peplumed skirt over her boobs. And dusty pink. *shudder*

  • kaycem

i’m going to go with IN.  i like the color that’s on the model better, but kate made a good choice going for the pink.  it works for me.

  • I like it

  • DinahR

OUT.   Not a fan of that shade of pink and the humongous ruffle, flounce, apron over the bodice looks wonky.

  • Out. She looks like a fraying bandage.

  • 3boysful

Can’t do the dusty pink.  I had this dress in burgundy quiana –in 1980.  Custom-made.  By my mom.  For a pledge dance.

  • Aly Light

She’s wearing a dust ruffle, you guys. Does that bodice not look like the bottom of your bed? OUT.

  • Jangle57

Not working for me at all; I don’t even think a different color would help. Her hair is awful. OUT

  • Out. The color kills it for me. Would’ve been more striking in the yellow.

  • Rrroza

Noooo. Out. I’m not a fan of pink, but the dress is an awkward design in any color.

  • chitowndg

In! It is a poofy yet understated dress, and she looks like she is having fun.

  • ccm800

  • PinkLemon

in! some bitches can work that color like it owes them rent. like kate here. i applaud the risk in silhouette.

  • She looks like a lamp

  • Trevor Scott

She’s wearing a dingy pink sack with a dust ruffle on her tits. What’s to like?

  • akprincess72

No, no & No.  It is not a boob-friendly dress!

  • I love the shape of it, enough to make up for the color. In.

  • Jessica Goldstein

OUT. She’s wearing it as well as it can be worn, but it’s a ridiculous dress to begin with.

  • SophieCollier

Don’t mind the color, and I do like a sleek and slinky dress, but the top is billowing waaaay too far out and looks rather comical from the side.  I think the fabric’s just a bit too stiff for this particular style.

  • bringbackbeatles

IN! I just get it. It’s kind of boho, but still put together and the color really does work on her. This is my kind of style, but I can see why some others don’t love it as much. It just has to be your thing.

Edited to add: the necklace is amazing!

  • kategs

I like the way the jewels take the fluffy off.  Plus she’s just so gorgeous…IN!

  • trisker

Out but there are some good things here. She looks happy and pretty, and I think the dress is really interesting and flattering on her, but the color! all the bad qualities already creatively identified by the Fawns.

  • Kate’s doing her best to sell it, but it’s still an OUT.

  • ballerinawithagun

    Out, that’s all.

  • Dwight Lake

I’m getting a slight maternity vibe but like Posh Spice maternity. I think she look cute if u discount the hair so IN

  • SewingSiren

Yep. I’m a digging it too.

  • bertkeeter

Tom n Lorenzo….I am honored that my humble effort on Project Runway / Season 9 in the “pet shop” challenge has influenced a design house as impotant as GUCCI! :)))))

  • Monabel

    No, no, dears.

  • l_c_ann

Masterful use of fabric and it fits and flatters.

  • I wore this to my junior year valentines dance, in 1978.

  • L.

    IN. I like it.

  • demidaemon

OUT. It reminds me of Claire Danes Emmy dress, which I didn’t like. Also, that bodice is fugly.

  • Sara__B

OUT. The dress is fine, but not on her. It’s designed for a women with less bust.

  • TieDye64

Yeah, this would only work on an actual Barbie doll. O-U-T.

  • Tutu tits.

  • julnyes

The top of the dress looks like a bottom of a dress, but the jewelry has a cool late 70’s early 80’s vibe to it that I like. I’m going to call it an OUT because I really don’t like the dress though everything else is working in my opinion.

  • plinkiedoodle

Oh, no.  That bust drape is an out for me.

  • julesj

OUT in an ugly, grandmother valance sort of way.

  • This inexplicably reminds me of Charo.  OUT.

  • No. God no. Prom. Terrible hair. OUT.

  • MRC210

Out.  My first apartment was painted that color.

  • hmatz

Out. I find the color awkward, the tendrils in the hair distracting, and that boob flounce is all kinds of ick. Her necklace is gorgeous, but that’s about the only thing that’s working here.

  • Frank Lithium

    Uh… NO.

  • TSkot

She’s too short for this look; plus used chewing gum color and sloppy hair = OUT

  • Alisa Rivera

I love the dress on her. Hair sucks but overall an IN.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  She tucked a bunch of napkins in the front of her dress.  Looks silly.

  • ashley melberg

She even looks plastic-y like a Barbie. It’s completely unflattering, especially on top, and her hair is a bad bridesmaid ‘do. OUT.

  • OUT. It was made for a woman with no chest at all. Obvs. Ms. Beckinsale has something there, because that stupid flap up top is jutting everywhere but where it was meant to jut.

  • ankali

IN, which surprises me too. I also liked Jessica Biel’s black Gucci, which was similar to this, awhile back. I’m not sure how, but the designer made those absurd-by-all-rights ruffles look graceful.

  • This looks like a flower that wilted… sorry.

  • MaryanneGirl

  • Jenny Moss

It’s such a relief to see her tie her ridiculous mane of hair up and I like the necklace. Then it all goes wrong. So out.

  • When I first read that I thought it made you feel funny because with the colour and the shape of the dress, she kind of looks like… well… like a penis. So that would be an OUT from me. And once you see it, you can’t un-see it.

  • Well, I like it!  Yeah, okay, so maybe it is a little 80s Barbie, but we loved her for a reason, right?!  That fabric looks so soft and beautiful and gorgeous and EXPENSIVE.  And the gold is helping it all along.

  • RzYoung

OUT, hate the boob ruffle, hate the colour, hate the make-up and the 80s necklace. Yuck

  • OUT. I wanted to like it but somehow can’t quite.

  • 1woodlot

IN   dont love the color or the hair..but the rest has a great 1930’s vibe

  • Cathy S

Bridesmaid dress. The color on the model makes it less bridesmaid-y. It reminds me of the dress I wore as a junior bridesmaid at my cousin’s wedding in the 80s. Out.

  • Je dig. IN.

  • afabulous50

  • No no no no no.  out.  It looks like a super absorbant towel-robe you put on after a shower.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  I think I see where it was trying to go, but it all ends up kind of shapeless.  The necklace, however, is fabu.

  • formerlyAnon

  • TAGinMO

I’m with TLo here: IN, but I feel funny about it. The whole thing just works for some reason. That dusty rose is a much better color for her (and, I would assume, for most women) than the runway yellow. And the tit-ruffle is odd but also oddly flattering. Plus, the arm candy: ROWR.

  • neofashionista

  • MissFern

I love it.  Boob ruffle and all.

  • mmc2315

She looks pretty, but OUT with the boob bedskirt.

  • Cousin_Rose

In – she is selling it

  • mhleta

The gold and the pink make me think of a !980s powder room trying to look like a 1920s powder room. The flange at the bust is ridiculously proportioned. It’s all a bit silly, actually. Hate the hair, too. I’m not conflicted about this at all. It’s a clear OUT for me.

  • total out here. it’s not even barbie…more 80s prom dress with a shee-rah necklace?

  • Melissa Brogan

Hate it. The accessories are great, but the dress is awful imo. OUT

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Wellworn

Out, reminds me of a bridesmaid dress I wore in the 70s.  Yes, the 70s.  Same color, similar style with less boob ruffleage, if that’s a word.

  • Tuana Neves

Out. Don’t like the dress and really really hate the hair.

  • hmmm…no.  Out.

  • warnerave

    it’s an IN for me

  • guest2visits

The color’s fine; but the gold necklace and clutch have made it look very 80s early 90s prom wear. It looks dated to me.
I think Kate’s wonderful looks have the ability to make it look better than it really is.

  • ZnSD

the dress is fab, it’s that idiotic choker and HORRIBLE hair that’s ruining this. Out.

  • ma_du

Sorry Kate, I love you, but to me you look like a penis in that dress. OUT

  • melanie0866

    OUT.  Yuck yuck yuck.

  • Pterodactyl111

    Out. OUT.

  • Don Hackett

out.  the dress is just odd.  from the front the top looks droopy and from the side it sticks out like some sort of shorty-nighty.  like the chartreuse on the model, though.

    posted by sleah in norcal

  • ThaliaMenninger

Nope. Not digging it. The flouncy bodice is SO not working for me. I don’t hate the pink, but I am not down with the up-side-down dress. OUT.

  • RocknRollmom

Out.  Saw it yesterday and my first comment was out and weird.  Weird shape and weird hair.  I could find nothing redeeming about it.

  • Yuck, OUT! I don’t think 80s.  I think 1978 bridesmaid inspired.  That ruffle is horrid.

  • Michelle Wesley

Looks maternity to me.  Maybe if it were shorter?

  • OUT! Breast peplum…that’s all I have to say.  Ugh!
