IN or OUT: Beyonce in Emilio Pucci

Posted on January 21, 2013

The inaugural fashion parade continues, darlings. Since she’s an entertainer, we’re happy to put this one up to a vote.

Jay-Z (in Tom Ford) and Beyonce arrive at the presidential inauguration on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Beyonce is wearing a coat by Christian Dior.

Beyonce performs the National Anthem during the public ceremonial inauguration for U.S. President Barack Obama on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Beyonce is wearing an Emilio Pucci black velvet and chiffon beaded cutout long-sleeved gown from the Pre-Fall 2013 collection accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz emerald earrings.

Our thoughts: Totally wrong for the occasion and venue. This is clearly a dress for the evening and not for a daytime appearance. Besides, “slinky” just feels wrong for an event like this. Better if she’d gone with something boldly colored and classically tailored and saved this for the next Grammys or something. Don’t get us wrong; she doesn’t look bad at all. But we’re big proponents of the “know your venue” rule for dressing, and on that front, this fails completely. Sorry, Bey. Also: they should’ve turned your mike up a bit. Gorgeous earrings, though. And hey, Jay-Z is dressed pretty much perfectly for the event. But no, we can’t sign off on this one.

Vote Now!

IN! She brought some glamour to the proceedings and that’s enough for me!

OUT! Too showy and slinky for such an event!

The Bitter Kittens were not so bitter when it came to Scarlet Johansson’s opening night getup because they voted it IN.

  • Totally agree. It’s an OUT because one should not wear a sheer dress at an outdoor daytime event. Love the earrings, though.

    • gabbilevy

I can tell you, not only was it day/night inappropriate, but it didn’t warm up until later in the afternoon. When she got up to sing, it was miserably cold. Sheer sleeves? Insane.

  • Reneesance

I miss Aretha and her fabulous coat and hat.  This would be fabulous at the Inagural Ball but looks really off for the ceremony itself. OUT this time. Jay Z did indeed look pretty fabulous though.

    • Tuana Neves

My thoughts exactly. Sorry, Bey. It’s an out.

    • rh33

Agreed–That said, Bey did a fab job with the national anthem!

      • According to some reports, it was lip-synched, so I say no to an evening dress if you’re gonna fake the performance anyway.

        • I think they have now admitted it was lip-synched.

    • Deac82

There was a great article on NPR recently on the milliner who created that hat for Aretha.  She originally wanted a fur hat but he convinced her that the shadowing wouldn’t look good on her for TV.  Instead, they created that hat using ideas from 3 or 4 others.

      • alyce1213

Luke Song, the milliner, was interviewed the other day by ABC News and said he’s received hundreds of requests to make copies of his 2009 hat for today’s inauguration.   That hat became a huge internet meme — one of the first.  A great piece of work.

        •  I totally loved Aretha’s hat!

        • Celandine1

And you know what’s really great, real women can afford to buy Luke Song’s hats and wear them!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Thank you for the love for Aretha’s coat and especially her hat-truly fabulous, and oh so appropriate for the occasion.

  • I completely agree. Its too “showtime” for an event like this. She has on a cape for goodness sake. Thats a Oscar party dress/wig combo.

    • Introspective

That dress? FAIL. So wrong for the occasion and the weather.

As for the wig?? Atrocious. Too much hair, too many colors and the flyaways were so annoying.

Oh Bey, you spoiled a good opportunity for folks to just focus on the beauty of your voice by serving up WTF realness.

  • SophieCollier

In.  I’m okay with the evening glam.  She just looks so damn good here that I can’t bash her for it.

    • Cathy S

Me too. How many inaugurations is she going to be invited to sing at. Might as well go all out. And if she could sing while freezing her ass off, then good for her. The wig was a bit much though. Still, In.

      • pdquick

To be fair, the wig was probably the only reason she didn’t freeze to death.

        • Cathy S

  • Maya Laukaran

As a washingtonian, I’m voting this an OUT. Also I like the version on the model WAY BETTER than the one Beyonce is wearing.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Out…not a dress that should see daylight.

  • kalisa

Agree! Out! My first thought was, “She’s wearing an evening gown??”

  • BuckeyeLou

I’ve got to agree with TLO…beautiful gown but too slinky for Daytime, seems like something for an Awards show..her earrings are Fabulous and she looks beautiful, but a bit ‘too much” for a serious event.  JayZ looks terrific, elegant suit.

  • in! she’s too fabulous, break the rules, girl!

    • kikisayshi

THANK you! She’s freakin’ Beyonce, after all! 🙂

    • d4divine

There are some rules that are not meant to be broken…especially ones regarding decorum and class

  • Janet B

Inappropriate.  Should have kept it for another venue.

  • Lilithcat

Our thoughts: Totally wrong for the occasion and venue.

Exactly.  It was noon, not midnight!

    •  really.  Besides, she was singing the National Anthem, not, “Whatever Lola Wants”

      • charlotte

         Thanks for the laugh!

      • MaryanneGirl

Hahaha oh lawd, that made me laugh out loud!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

        Ooooh, SNAP!

    •  And she looks freaking freezing. Keep the earrings, change everything else!

  • Elizabeth Dunbar

    Jay Z looks great.
Bey would have been fine in the original dress.  As constructed and worn here looks tawdry.

    • Those glasses kill me and that first shot shows why. He looks like he’s wearing those gag glasses with the eyeballs on the front.

      •  omgosh!  I’m so glad someone else saw that, too!

      • gabbilevy

        Love! Can’t unsee!

      • Elizabeth Dunbar

Saw that too.  Trying to be kind.  Trying.

    • kimmeister

The original dress, with the sheer bust, for an inauguration?  Je crois que non.

  • IN! This is downright subdued for Beyonce. I thought she added just the right amount of celebrity glamour without detracting from the other figures on the stage. Side note: seeing Jay-Z seated near super conservative Justice Antonin Scalia at the inauguration blew my mind…in a good way. One pulled himself up out of abject poverty by his bootstraps and fulfilled the ambition of the American Dream, and the other is Antonin Scalia.

    •  I wonder what they talked about. Apparently Scalia and Ginsberg celebrate New Years together every year, so it seems like Scalia can be a pretty fun dude in social situations. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for a Jay-Z and Scalia conversation!

      • Yeah because when you think about hilarious hijinx, the mind immediately goes to Justice Ginsberg.

    • d4divine

This occasion was not about celebrity or glam It was about the second term of Barack Obama. Period

      • I disagree. The inauguration is a celebration of our entire democracy, not just President Obama. Beyonce would still be a glamorous celebrity in a dowdy suit. You don’t invite her to sing the national anthem at the swearing in ceremony if you’re not trying to remind the audience that the Obamas are young, cool, and glamorous themselves, and of ALL of the work that went into re-electing him to a second term (some of which was accomplished by celebrities).

        • And since when is celebrity worship related to democracy?  Oh wait, it isn’t.  And I don’t know what the fuck compelled them to pick Beyonce to sing the National Anthem.  With all the real singers in the U.S. of freakin’ A., they went with Beyonce?  Ugh.  I youtubed her rendition and HATED it.  Whoever did the arrangement clearly had to change the meter and manufacture a march around her hackneyed idea of what the Star Spangled Banner sounds like because she CANNOT FUCKING COUNT IN THREE.   And then they did it to My Country Tis of Thee to stay consistant, probably so it didn’t sound like an accident.  I mean, why else did Kelly Clarkson need freaking sheet music for a song she probably learned in kindergarten?  Oh, and did you notice Ms. Clarkson’s scarf?  And coat?  That’s because she was singing in 30° weather.  Speaking of…

That dress.  I’m gonna stick all my criticism here because I’m already bitching about her singing, so I may as well bitch about her tasteless outfit.  What she is wearing is part of the reason why Racist/Conservative America (that does not mean “White America” btw) wants to secede from Obamerika, or whatever they’re calling it these days.  It is proof that people of color are tacky and that no amount of money or success or even education can buy them good breeding or “rightness” in the traditional world.  “You were born a street rat, you will die a street rat, and only your fleas will mourn you.”

It’s like she saw a black, sheer, fitted dress and thought that it was appropriate for a mid-winter political thingie because it was black.  Never mind that it is inappropriate for the season, the time of day, and for the task.  She wore that dress to the presidential inauguration and she’s there to sing the National Anthem.  If there is ever a time to shift aside your own personal “brand” and general narcissism as a celebrity, a presidential event is it.  That’s not even getting into the whole “global” aspect of things and how this presents the entire US to the world.  If she really wanted to wear that dress, she should’ve kept the coat on.  If she had any taste or sense, she would’ve done as TLo stated and saved it for something else and worn a more appropriate outfit.  But then again, if she had any sense or taste, she’d do something about that horrifically shitty hair.

Oh, that means I think she’s OUT OUT OUT.

        • d4divine

Who said anything about dowdy…spectrum between evening gown and dowdy is quite wide. Glamour be accomplished without wearing evening attire at 11am.

  • iCouture

OUT.  This was not the venue for Beyonce to show off her ASSets….

  • Chaiaiai

Absolutely OUT.  Completely inappropriate for the venue and time of day.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT, both the dress and her vocal stylings on the National Anthem. Sorry, Beyonce, it’s NOT about you.

    • formerlyAnon

I agree totally about the dress.

But I’m okay with her take on the National Anthem. It gets all kinds of renditions, and if you don’t want the Beyonce version, why invite Beyonce to appear?

    • Sarah Dickerson

THIS.  Her narcissism was horribly inappropriate.  Can’t she turn it down for one day?

    • d4divine

  • I agree with my uncles. Though she looks flat out stunning, its not the right dress for the Inauguration  sorry. Something classic and tailored, not an evening gown with green jewelry. Sorry if it’s a cliche, but red or blue jewelry. We are American, after all. Out…but barely my dear.

    • editrixie

I’m so glad to hear someone else say this. Everyone I know thinks she’s the absolute best, and all I can see is how in love with herself she is. So sick of her schtick.

ETA: Oops, sorry, this was meant to reply to someone else!!

  • Sara__B

This is the event for a fabulous coat, not an evening gown. She’s gorgeous, but OUT.

  • elleg929

OUT – too much for daytime.

  • xmixiex

my thoughts exactly- she looks GORGEOUS, but it’s not appropriate.

  • Jessica O’Connell

OUT. I agree that this was a bit much for the event. I get that she wanted to make sure she got some attention, but it’s just too much “Look at me! Look how sexy I am as I sing the National Anthem!” In contrast, I thought that Kelly Clarkson looked very appropriate – bright, colorful, and with another nice coat to look at.

  • VeryClaire

Even if it was the same dress only short (not too short) it would have been a lot more appropriate (would this dress look good short though?). The slinky was ok since she wasn’t showing a lot of skin but the long was just too much.

    • A good thought, but I think it would be too cocktail-y short.

  • In or out, could go either way, but that coat does not belong over that dress.

  • Meredith_P

Out!  No, no, no.  I agree with you TLo. Know your venue!  This is not a nightclub, awards show, or other red carpet event.  Ok, there IS a lot of red carpet, but a beautiful coat ensemble would have been so much better.

    • littlemac8

I’m sorry, I hated the nail color (too dayglo), the ratty extensions, and the evening gown!  It’s incumbent upon her to honor the occasion.

      • kimmeister

I hated the nail color too.

  • mommyca

    I agree… totally inappropriate for the occasion…

  • i’m soooo sorry, but it’s an out. 🙁

  • I have a hell of a time giving an OUT to somebody looking that fabulous, but you nailed it: this is just not a daytime look.

  • AmeliaEve

Yup. Beautiful dress, wrong occasion. This is the time for something tailored and a chance to wear a fabulous color. Love her hair though.

  • trisker

I think she’s an IN.  It might be the wrong dress for most people, but she’s BEYONCE.  Knockout earrings.

  • sylverlight

Out out out… incredibly wrong for the time of day & venue. Ugh.

  • I agree that it’s a totally wrong look for the occasion, but she really does look pretty damn good, so it squeaks by with an IN for me.

  • Rand Ortega

    Record SCRATCH!

  • I don’t know… I hear your case, and I tend to agree. But, she was still a featured performed, she didn’t do anything completely inadecuate like a mini or a metallic, and she looks gorgeous (hair and makeup, and the beautiful earrings). I say IN.

  • Out.  This was not a night club appearance; it was the inauguration of a president.  The dress is totally wrong for a daytime civic event of this magnitude.

  • I think it’s an IN. It looks heavy and velvet-y. So I’m OK with it.

  • golden_valley

This was not a red carpet event.  She can wear that dress at a ball later this evening.  But yes, she looked great.

  • formerlyAnon

I DID admire how she stayed true to her two-tone hair and yet managed it so that it looked absolutely appropriate. In fact, she looked fine in most of the t.v. shots because she entered in a coat and most of the footage I saw was not full-body. BUT.

I’d have gone with in if she’d kept her coat on and spared us the full-on-body-hugging evening wear.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She really is dressed for the Oscars, isn’t she. OUT.

  •  OUT. Too much for a daytime event.

  • Carrieanno

OUT.  Save the “I’m here to steal the show” for a show stealing occasion. I don’t care who she is; although this occasion is a celebration, it is one that calls for solemnity and quiet dignity from those participating.

  • B_C_J

She looks beautiful and the dress is very nice but it is not the appropriate garment for a midday event. It’s perfect for the ball this evening. I am afraid that I must vote OUT.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I think this may be as appropriate as Beyonce is capable of being.  I think she dresses wrong for (whatever) occasion more often than right.  Jay-Z, on the other hand, is almost always on the money.

  • Out.  Not the time or place for this one.

  • miagain

    OUT OUT OUT!!!
    Good grief…

  • Pam Winters

Utterly gorgeous–except too “evening.” I’d still give it an IN, because her appearance and song were such a pleasant surprise to me.

  • Melissa Brogan

It’s gorgeous on her, but I have to agree, it’s OUT because it’s a gown for evening, indoors.

  • samo_samo

Out..not the right outfit for this even. She would have been perfect had she been singing at one of the inaugural balls.

  • Carla_Charlton

    Agree that it’s an OUT.

  • Jangle57

  • Annabelle Archer

Out. I want to see that dress at the Opera, not a daytime event.

And it makes the body her face is wearing on that GQ cover even more laughable.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I don’t care who it is, this look was all wrong for daytime. If she had worn this to one of the inaugural balls this evening, I’d have no problem with the look.

  • d4divine

Out. I agree with you 100%

  • butterflysunita

IN.  Though it could be that I like it because it looks warm.  Given that I’m home sick with a cold, I’m all for people dressing warmly.

  • AuntJentie

Out.  Totally agree she looks gorgeous, but just not venue appropriate.

  • KarenZ

She’s out, for the reasons you give, but JayZ looks perfect.

  • nyll18

Out. I agree it’s completely wrong for the venue. And while you can appreciate the dress’s detail in close up shots on TV, I imagine to the in-person audience, she was hard to make out amongst all those dark suits and coats. If I had been standing around in the cold, I would want to be able to see her better! Of course, she’s not the reason people were there, but still….

  • librarygrrl64

Out. You were right: not appropriate for the event.

  • Have to agree, it’s a great dress but not the right dress for this time and this place.

  • OUT, even though she accessorized with a dapper, handsome man.

  • If she’d worn this tonight, I’d be applauding how FAB she looks. But not during the day. She should have worn a killer coat and maybe some boots and left it at that.

  • Sherri Williams

I like it. The look(including the coat) harkens back to Marian Anderson singing the national anthem.

    • margaret meyers

You’re right, Marian Anderson IS wearing a floor-length gown and a big ol’ fur coat at the Lincoln Memorial.  But that was HER concert.

I once met Leontyne Price after a concert and she was wearing a full-cut, floorlength Blackglama mink coat, and a big, black feather boa as well.  It was HER concert. Yes, she wa wearing a jeweled turban.  Divas have got to Diva.

  • margaret meyers

Out, even the Queen of Soul knew this venue calls for your Best Church Clothes, not evening wear.

    • If Aretha could cover up the girls that day, Beyonce really has no excuse.

      • THANK YOU.  Yes.  THIS.  God damnit, this.  It’s not like she can put her ass in the closet for a more appropriate time (I should know, I have one too) but don’t SPOTLIGHT IT.  Fucking hell, it’s not that hard in this day and age of google.  Did it not occur to her to say to someone, somewhere, “I’m going to President Obama’s reinauguration.  It’s outside in January in DC.  I want to look good but I should probably look a little bit conservative.  I’m singing for the president.”

        What the fucking fuck?

  • Scarlet39

OUT.  Completely wrong for the occasion.

  • SapphoPoet

I absolutely agree. She looked wonderful, but the whole outfit was totally out of place. She should have saved it for the Inaugural Ball.

  • Totally agree that it’s totally wrong.

  • AlexisPayne

    All wrong! OUT

  • kschwarting

Out for the reasons you mentioned, but I also don’t like how the gown falls on her.  It seems to make her slightly lumpy in the stomach area.  However, Jay-Z looks downright dapper.

    • zmayhem

Aw, I kind of liked the little bit of tummy. Still drop-dead gorgeous, but less like an uncannily flawless mannequin and more like a drop-dead gorgeous human woman who’s semi-recently gone through pregnancy and childbirth. Every time I see a celebrity who’s willing to go out on a red carpet and then up on a stage without submitting to her stylists Spanxing every inch of human flesh to a fare-thee-well, it makes me deeply happy (even if, as it happens, her gown is way too evening-y).

      • formerlyAnon

Absolutely. She is a human woman who’s had a baby and is healthily, not skeletally thin. Everyone’s body is different, but there ARE some women who can’t get back the flat abdomen without either corsetry, surgery or unhealthy body weight.

  • OUT. Completely agree about it being inappropriate for the occasion. Definitely an evening outfit.

  • amian3

Out. Ms. Franklin did this perfectly four years ago in her stunning coat and hat. B is dressed for an evening indoors. And it was very hard to sing the national anthem along with her.

  • Imasewsure

For her, that is toned down so I’m still giving it an IN. JZ looks great..

  • rumcg66

OUT. All she had to do was wait about 8 hours and wear it to the ball tonight, and it would have been fine. Instead, it’s tacky. But Bey has always had a taste issue.

  • IAmJ

Sadly, an OUT for me too. Hair and makeup look perfect, the earrings are lovely but the gown is too evening.
    Jay-Z looks freaking amazing though.

  • OUT. Not daywear. And not a dress for an event that isn’t actually about her.

  • Cheryl Kohs

She’s wearing Christmas earrings.  And a New Year’s Eve ballgown.  Nuff said.

  • siriuslover

She looked great, but out. If it matched the original a bit more, then maybe.

  • kaycem

beyonce is a fierce woman, but her style is generally questionable (at least for appearances — her editorial and/or videos are usually sartorially perfect) so i’m going to go with OUT.

  • jw_ny

OUT! lovely (aside from that chiffon cape thing?) but wrong for the occasion.

  • IN.

  • Monday1900

Completely agree with TLo–just wrong wrong wrong for the venue.  She’s gorgeous though and I really wish I could see those earrings better.

  • AthenaJ

I dunno guys- for Bey, this is toned down… I’ll admit I like it a lot.

  • Lisa Salmon

out – pretty but completely inappropriate.

  • JosephLamour

I agree, OUT. I would have said the same thing if I couldve gotten a word in edgewise today on HuffPo. LOL

  • EEKstl

OUT.  Why is she wearing an evening gown?  MAYBE if it were cut to knee-length…maybe.

  • Wrong time of day, wrong venue. Also, if she HAD to wear this dress, the version on the model would have been better.

  • IN. No question about it. She looks gorgeous and glamorous, and those earrings are to die. Haters to the left.

  • VicksieDo

IN from me.  She WAS entertaining, and it’s beautiful, doesn’t show skin, is undeniably classy.  Go Bey!

  • Kayceed

    Irritatingly clueless. Out.

  • chitowndg

Out, but on TV it did not look as bad because of the camera angles they showed.

  • alyce1213

OUT.  From the second I saw her, I said oh no, black cutout velvet with sequins, outdoors in the daytime at a state function.  Fashion Police will love it.

Did no one give her advice?  Does she not take advice?
She looked beautiful but, as most have said, inappropriate.  And her hair was too big.  This is a great gig, but it’s NOT the Beyoncé show.

    Jay-Z is IN, just perfect.

  • Louise Bryan

I’m with you guys.  Definitely evening wear.  With the first picture I was wondering if DC was in a time warp and had started the inaugural balls early.  Then I felt bad for the lady having to remove the coat in order to do her singing thing.  Better to have a beautiful suit and stay warm for the singing, because it is freaking cold all up and down the eastern seaboard today. Oh yeah, gotta vote: OUT

  • Vulgar in that context. Out.

  • It seems like a bit much. Yikes.

  • Out.  Save this one for one of the Inaugural Balls tonight.

  • Veronica Russek

OUT: I agree with you guys, totally wrong for the occasion.

  • IN for me, because yeah, she was glamorous — it’s kind of her thing. She looked like someone who should be singing for the President. She looked like a goddess. It fits with the rest of her image.

  • Candigirl1968

This should have been her evening outfit.  Very much OUT.

  • Agreed-wrong for the venue.  And I am SO over Bed, Bath, & Beyonce!  (I missed Aretha & her fabu hat.)

  • julnyes

Wrong venue and time of day = OUT

  • sk8tfan

Much more important mystery going on here-what happened to the ring she’s wearing in the first photo, the one that matches the earrings? Since emerald is my birthstone, I’m assuming a relative of mine pulled an Artful Dodger routine, slid it off and dropped it in the mail to me.

    •  You should be so lucky! The ring is stunning.

      • sk8tfan

I wish! I thought it was gorgeous, too. But where the heck did it go? It looks like she’s not wearing it to perform.

        •  Dropped it down the back of the sofa and didn’t notice because she’s got 3 others at home?

          • sk8tfan

bwahahaha. I figure maybe she gave it to Blue Ivy as a teething ring.

  • Liz

Her earrings are KILLER.  His scarf made me very confused; I spent time trying to figure out why he was wearing so many ear bud cords.

  • appliquer

Out. Too much and undignified for the occassion. Not a fan of the blonde hair, either.

    • libraangel

      Absolutely – undignified – that’s the word!

  • lesmaha

    Totally agree–OUT.

  • totally wrong…not your center stage dear…take it down a notch or 10…

  • jerseyginger

Totally OUT and inappropriate. Bey, it ain’t about you. Put on a kickass coat and stop trying to upstage the President.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Jay-Z was a big IN! She looked lovely but you’re right, completely out of place.

  • Linda L

Though a lovely dress, I don’t think it was right for that particular occasion

  • Judy_S

After a good deal of consideration, I guess I will go with OUT, or maybe just “out,” for the reasons stated. I like the way it is modified to be covered-up,and if it were shorter I might pass it. My bottom line is that the National Anthem should be about the song, not so much the singer, and though this is far more subdued than I would expect her to appear in most venues, it is not quite right.

  • ARE YOU KIDDING ME?    She is with the President…   If that’s not IN,  I don’t know what more you want.  Seriously!?!?!

    • MilaXX

Being appropriately dressed to meet the president? All any woman had to do was look at Michelle. If she is wearing  simple, daywear, then so should Bey.

    • TRSTL

That dias was chock full of women “with the President and they all managed to be appropriatly dressed for a day time event.  This was just diva grandstanding of the worst kind.

  • i was too distracted by jay z’s glorious suit to notice much more than her earrings.  my husband needs that suit.  maybe if i sell a kidney on the black market i could afford one of his shoes…

  • libraangel

Definitely OUT! Like you say, wrong place, wrong time! And TOOOO tight!!! I would be embarrassed to meet the President with my rear end sticking out so much!
As for JayZ, I cannot comment because everything this man does is revolting to me i.e. his raunchy songs full of swear words! I am not a prude, actually quite liberal, but I hate that he was there, is a role model(?!), and is a misogynist!

  • l_c_ann

With her gift of voice, she doesn’t need to compete with herself for memorableness.

  • Hetha Innis

When I saw the title of your post, I knew immediately that she would be in violation of the T-Lo basic of knowing your venue. I’ve never seen a Pucci that wasn’t revealing and uber-sexy. Totally inappropriate imo.

  • CeeQ

You’re right, totally wrong for the occasion.
    Gorgeous hair + gorgeous earrings.
But I’m still voting IN because she looked amazing!

  • OrigamiRose

Out.  Incredibly inappropriate for the time of day and event.

  • nannypoo

I think she looks beautiful, but yeah, it’s wrong for the event. She really is a gorgeous woman.

  • kattyatlaw

Agreed on Know Your Venue. Girl is out. Also, shorter coat with such a long dress, for goodness’ sake!

  • marilyn

    Out.  Agree completely

  • Didn’t realize it was a gown.  Not for daytime, dear.  Do stylists not understand proper venue etiquette?

  • julesj

Look around, Beonce, you are the only person dressed for the Oscars, instead of OBAMA’S inauguration (not YOUR inauguration). I was wondering how she was going to make this about her Diva-self.

  • jennsilentcrow

I hated everything about it when i saw it on TV, ESPECIALLY her makeup, hair and accessories. It looks better in the pictures you have here. Just all so wrong.
The earrings pass muster in some other configuration, as does the hair and dress….I GUESS.

  • bailey debruynkops

  • OUT.  She should have used the simpler version of the dress the model wore, had it shortened to knee length.  Keep those fab earrings & cocktail ring, and the coat.  That would have been perfect.  this is ridiculously overdone, especially considering that to most of the world the only thing that was visible was her head and arms.

  • mom2ab

Hated the dress hated the earrings. OUT

  • Out.  Totally inappropriate.

  • Synnamin

OUT. The dress and earrings are ostentatious and tacky for such an event

    • littlemac8

I thought the earrings looked plastic because emeralds that size and shape don’t even look real, especially for daytime.

  • Yeah, great dress, but not appropriate for the occasion.

  • Belvane

Beautiful, but out — as you say, it’s an evening dress. And her nail polish color is a bit too RiteAid.

  • Celandine1

What’s poking out at her neck? Is the fabric not trimmed properly? Looks itchy.

Anyway this is OUT. She looks good but this dress is so inappropriate for the venue AND the weather (sans coat) it’s nothing but out.

NO to the enth degree!!  It is a lovely dress on her but soooooo wrong for the occasion.  Really, really wrong….. and I am not a fan of that many extensions in so many colors.  It was all just too much “BITCHES!  LOOK AT ME!!!”  Not always a huge fan of hers but Kelly Clarkson did it pitch perfect.  Good color, appropriate.

  • Jay-Z looks like a f*cking boss.

  • Susan Woolley

Out, not appropriate for the inauguration.  Great suit with a fur coat and boots would have been terrific.

  • I was working so didn’t see any of this live. I can understand the criticism of it being the wrong dress for the event, but I still like it and think she looks beautiful. I did hear her sing live on the radio, and she sounded fabulous, not drowned out by the Marine Band at all in the feed I heard. Unfortunately, you couldn’t say the same for Kelly Clarkson — couldn’t hear her over the brass instruments, a terrible mix.

    • libraangel

What? Kelly Clarkson was fabulous! Even Rep. Schumer said “wow”!

      • I’m sure she was great, she’s got a terrific voice. But I was listening on the radio (NPR feed), and you could hardly hear her over the instruments. Much of the time they drowned her out.

  • Trisha26

Out. I thought she was wearing a long coat at first and I thought it was gorgeous if “goth-y.” Wow, what a mistake – gorgeous dress that belongs in my closet – totally inappropriate.

  • Le_Sigh

OUT.  Bey hunty – you’re making this too much about you.  It looks like you’re trying to seduce POTUS.

  • IN. She’s wearing sleaves and a high neckline. The skin that she is showing through the sheer is just enough so as to not be stepping out of any boundaries this event has. She’s a performer; a small amount of sexuality doesn’t conflict with the formality of this event. The only thing I would change would be the color to emerald or beige, but black is fine and it even restrains the look from stepping over the line of overt sexuality.

And god damn, her entrance wearing that coat is effortlessly glamorous.

  • MzzPants

I thought full length was an odd choice for daytime.  I know she’s a fabu-diva and all…  She does look drop-dead gorgeous and I was happy that the dress is relative modest.  Perhaps ‘no skin showing’ = ‘daywear’ in her head.  OUT.

  • I do not think a gown was appropriate.

  • Out. Too showy, too slinky and I also thought it looked a bit too snug for my taste. This was an occasion that called for something a bit more demure and this wasn’t it. Jay-Z looked amazing though.

  • Out

  • nerdykitten

OH I LOVE IT!!!!! But not appropriate for the occasion… *sigh* If only it had been a non-gown, I think it would have been fine. Definitely should have tried to coordinate with Shelley O. so as not to “upstage” the First Lady.
So aside from my feelings about the look itself…OUT. Know your venue, fo sho.

  • SRQkitten

OUT. Shelley and her young ladies brought the glamor to the event in an appropriate manner.

I will, however, give an IN to Jay-Z for knowing what was apprpriate dress for the occasion.

  •  Beyonce is an entertainer.  Showtime!!   IN

  • MaryanneGirl

Way over the top for the event. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, she sang well, etc., but she was fancier than the First Lady, and that’s a no go, Bey-Bey. OUT!

  • TSkot

Loved it!  Even for the venue and time of day.  WAY in!

  • withbreaththatisbaited

Out. It’s not your inauguration, B. Put on an appropriate dress and stop trying to upstage the people we’re looking to see.

    (Sorry, I can’t stand her.)

  • In! She went for something that worked for her. Am I wrong for wishing she’d added an insane hat or a giant sequined bow somewhere or something, though?

  • demidaemon

OUT. What happened to the original design? It’s like she said, “Hmmm. I’m singing at the Inauguration. The National Anthem, no less. This is a nice dress for the ball. I think I’ll take the top and have a dress completely made of that. Screw the regular black fabric. And I’ll sing the National Anthem in it.” In other words, she decided to be a drag queen during the day time, but not in day wear.

  • Call me Bee

It is an awesome dress but agreed that it is not for this occasion. OUT.

  • That was the biggest OUT I saw all day!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I hadn’t thought about the venue til I read TLo’s post, but I agree-this is a daytime event, and certainly Ms. Fierce could have found something more appropriate.

  • nancymae

Dramatic but OUT. Great face, jewelry and hair (but what’s up with that part?) though. Maybe that’s how they do big solemn outdoor occasions in the winter in Houston???

And this may be a personal best for Hova. Jay looks good!

  • Maybe if she kept her pretty velvet coat on it would have worked better.  Love the earrings.

  • GTrain

    OUT. Inappropriate for the occasion

  • unbornfawn

She looks great. Using the TLo criteria for venue, this is a giant OUT. Inappropriate as all get-out. Is she trying to be this president’s Marilyn Monroe? For shame.

  • kategs

no no no!  out.  Where on earth did she think she was going???

  • Totally agree as well.  Not appropriate.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  And ONLY because it is SO wrong for the occasion and venue.  You guys said EXACTLY what I was thinking–definitely a nighttime gown, and all wrong for this event.  (and it pains me, because on its own and in the right context, that is an INCREDIBLE gown and right up my alley.)

This is definitely a “coat” event IMO.  Aretha did it right.

  • carolie_king

Out.  And get rid of the eye wings.

  • e jerry powell

Overdone.  Cute earrings, but I don’t think they’d go with that dress even in the evening.

  • teensmom99

OUT: It’s a costume on a day that she should have worn an outfit.

  • Bill Curtis

Out. Should have been a gorgeous coat or cape. And given the whole podium set up, she should have gone for drama from the chest/shoulders up. Hair, earrings, hat, etc.

  • Pennymac

Huh. I thought it was a picture of her arrival at an inaugural ball. So inappropriate for the occasion. If she had been at a ball, this would have been a Werq! for me. Now, sadly, it’s OUT.

  • surfergirl70

OUT.  I was watching her today and thinking, hmm, odd choice for a daytime event…  She sounded divine, though.

  • megohd

Agreed. And I would love to take a heavy duty scissor to her hair.

  • CrazyAuntie

    OUT – It’s the Inaguration…In Washington DC… Not Vegas

  • snarkykitten

Nothing tops Aretha & her hat.

  • wamalarkey

I’m with you guys. That’s an evening gown, not day wear.

  • DesertDweller79

She looks really good, but you are right, T and Lo.  Inappropriate for the time and venue.  Also, is that real fur?  Probably a big no-no for a political function.

  • Too heavy for daytime. It’s a gorgeous dress though. But it gets an OUT from me.

  • Pterodactyl111

Out. Nice dress, wrong for the occasion.

  • Dagney

  • FridaStaire

This had me deeply confused in Australia – I thought it must have been a pre-ball dress. She looks gorgeous, but it’s all wrong for the event.

  • FridaStaire

Oh, and the version on the model is better.

  • Don Hackett

OUT.  she looks beautiful but totally inappropriate.  i’d cut a bitch  for those earrings, though.

    posted by sleah in norcal

  • thecitysleeps

I say IN.  I think it’s pretty demure and covered up making it appropriate.  For the event?  Maybe not but she’s DIVA BEYONCE.  The dress matches the name.  Love her hair and earrings.

  • Verascity

Agreed. It looks like Beyonce drag. OUT.

  • Rachel Council

IN! It’s Beyonce, showy is a given, and the people in these comments acting like sheer sleeves are vulgar in daylight need to wake up and smell the 21st century.

  • She looks great, but I totally get the “know your venue” complaint.  She’s either superwoman or she’s got some superwoman undergarms because her body looks fabu!

  • often i can see what you guys mean by “wrong for the occasion/venue/season”, eventhough i dont know nearly as much about that than you. but here, i dont see it. its just a gorgeous dress, she looks fantastic. its showy but not too showy. IN!

  • Out. But if she’d worn the model’s version I might have voted otherwise, even though that wouldn’t be quite right either.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    sexy dowager countess…out

  • Mariah Warnock-Graham

JayZ looks spectacular. Very snappy with that asian-pop-star scarf.

  • Jarethee

I would have said in, but based on the context, am going to have to go with OUT. Seriously, Bee.

  • Patricia Biswanger

  • kikisayshi

I disagree. She didn’t look a bit out of place for the event. I think the black was a good, conservative choice, while still leaving some room for her glam style. She is completely, fabulously IN!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

I think it has to be an OUT. She’s just too dressed up for the occasion. She could have worn a daytime outfit that would have kept her warm and been more appropriate. But she sounded great!

  • lalahartma

  • Jennifer Coleman

Completely, unequivocally OUT. Bey, this is not 1957 and you are not Maria Callas.
I was convinced that this dress was knee length and sorta-okay with it until I say these pictures. I do not know what she and her people were thinking. Great singing, but poor dressing.

  • Out. That was just silly. A black floor length gown? Really? Like you said, she looked fine but did she not get the memo about what everyone else was wearing?

  • MissFern

DIVA.  When she took out the earpiece, that was just glorious.

    But no to the dress.

    • TRSTL

Except, now it has been confirmed by the Marine Corps bands spokesperson, she was lipsynching to pre-recorded version.  The ripping out the ear peice was just more theatrics to draw attention to her on a day that was NOT about her.

      • Oh man, that just makes the rendition all the more awful.  That was recorded?  Because you couldn’t work in a rehearsal?  UGH.  And I hated the way she ripped out that monitor and thought maybe it was so she wouldn’t be forced to listen to anyone else but the voice she hears in her head.  But no, it was just melodrama.

      • You have to wonder if she pissed someone off, because why would the Marine Corps band issue a statement on this.

        • TRSTL

They were asked a direct question by someone in the press and they certainly weren’t going to lie. As they stated in the press release, pre-recording before an event is standard with the band and then the artist has the option. I don’t fault her for the lipsynching, certainly it makes sense in situations like this. I fault her for trying to be so deceptive about it with the earpeice ripping drama. and the “upstage the President on his big day” dress.

  • betorah

Out! My first thought when I saw her yesterday was “What is she doing in a gown at 11 in the morning?”

    • libraangel

All it needed was to be shorter!

  • Judy_J

She was performing, and I guess she felt she should give the crowd a good show, so that accounts for the dress.  While it would be inappropriate for mere mortals to wear at noon, this is Beyonce, after all.  This dress is conservative by her standards, and so I’m giving her an IN.

  • warontara

It’s too much, but that’s kind of Bey’s thing. Besides, I wasn’t distracted by it while watching…so lowercase in.

  • AnaRoW

I’m going to give this an IN.  It’s very toned down and non-showy (for her). I like the original design better but that would have been really inappropriate.  I still can’t stand her hair but it’s apparently how she likes it.

    • TRSTL

I’m confused, what? The original version was lees showy, more covered up and conservative.  It actually would have been a teensy bit better as to not be that over the top embellished head to toe.  “Toned down and non-showy”? Hardly….

  • TropiCarla

IN by the Transitive Property of Marriage. That is seriously the best I’ve ever seen Jay-Z look … and a handsome man he is not.

    • mhleta

Next to her, who wouldn’t look like the ass end of a goat? Cover up her side of the screen in the first shot and look at that smile of his. Handsome, right?

  • Dot

Dress aside…her facial expressions just before she began singing were laugh-out-loud funny.

  • MarissaLG

IN. The coat, hair, and earrings are FABULOUS. I get what y’all are saying, but she looks so good I just can’t manage to call this an out.

  • bluefish

Totally overdone as is her habit.  Tacky.

  • Joyce VG

I think she looks gorgeous.  Diva? Of course.  IN.

  • BrightsideSusan

I was working and didn’t see any of the events until last night.  When I saw this photo I thought it was from the Ball.  Totally inappropriate for the daytime events.

  • stagmania

OUT. First thing I thought was “I can’t believe she’s wearing a tight gown with sheer cutouts to the inauguration.”

  • another_laura

I’m with you, T Lo.  Out.

  • Lilak

The Queen Herself saw fit to wear an outfit appropriate for the occasion in 2009 (regardless of what one thought of her hat).

So I don’t see why Bey should be given a pass for wearing an event-inappropriate gown.  No way “because she looked so good” (or “sang so well”) or “it’s her thing” or “it was conservative for Bey” can trump the Inauguration of the President of the United States of America.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Hear hear.

  • maggiemaybe

    OUT. I miss Aretha.

  • Alisa Rivera

It turns out she was lip synching so all that business with dramatically ripping out her ear piece was complete bullshit. It wasn’t about you, dear.

    • TRSTL

Oh, good point.  She is on my irrational dislike list and I think it is for this very reason: she always seems to need to be the center of attention, the big drama diva.  And she really has the talent to be on top without all the theatrics.

  • mhleta

I smell what you’re stepping in, but I can’t quite summon up the venom to give her an o.u.t. She’s an entertainer, she’s covered up and she’s not too showy or sparkly. Not quite right for a state occasion, but she’s Beyonce, not Maya Angelou and it’s dignified enough for her. I give a lower case “in.”

    • TRSTL

Not too showy?!  It isn’t quite as visible in these pics but live TV, that dress is completely embellished with sparkly sequins around the burnout pattern.  It was too showy, too sparkly for the event.  NO ONE else came even close to being this over dressed, that’s the big tip off.  Not even Kelly Clarkson and certainly not james Taylor, both entertainers.

      • Not even Katy Perry.  And she’s Katy Perry, whose schtick is more “showy” than anything else.  She even skinned Tiger for her coat and STILL looked more venue/season/event appropriate than Beyonce did.

  • libraangel

just noticed this today: tacky blue star earrings with a black dress? NO!

  • out

  • GorgeousThings

Hah! AND she lip synched it. Tacky tacky tacky. At least Aretha had the guts to perform live, in far harsher conditions.

    • o rly?  I have to go a-googling now…

Man, I had the hugest, rantyest post in response to someone regarding my opinion on the dress and on her absolutely overrated abilities and it has disappeared.  So did another ranty post, so I wonder if I somehow misbehaved or if Disqus is eating my rants…

      • GorgeousThings

Yup. The Marine Corps band issued a statement that she lip synched, and the NY Times confirmed it. If you watch the video carefully you can see that she’s a hair off in a couple of places. Plus, she doesn’t lower her tongue and raise her palate the way she does when she really sings high notes (sorry, I’m an opera singer so I’m getting geeky here, but that’s how it works)

  • Anathema_Device

Out. For all the reasons in your post.

  • guest2visits

Oh totally agree, TLo.  It was not right for the occasion; better for a dinner event or a stage show. Not the inauguration.
It was alot more elegant with the coat, and in fact if she had kept it on it would have been perfect.
Too much drama with the tulle, the tightness, the whole diva style.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • RocknRollmom

Ok, I never made it past her earrings yesterday.  I actually googled them.  Lorraine Schwartz–80 carats of emeralds.  Once she put those on she should have just went with any black shift.  This is not appropriate for weather or venue.  Gorgeous gown, but this is not a gown day.  I missed Miss Aretha and her understated hat (for her it was!!!).  But as an unrelated aside can I say that Miss Beyonce nailed that song and made her version iconic.

  • myristica_fragrans

    dress- gorgeous
    jewelry- fabulous
    wig- on point
    camel- fed and groomed
of course she’ll probably say “i just wanted to look amazing for this important moment in american history, etc”, but by overdressing for this she basically guaranteed that all of the attention would be on her.

  • colleenjanel

Beyond it being inappropriate for the venue/time of day/weather … YOU SIMPLY DON’T OUT-DRESS THE GUESTS OF HONOR! Tacky.

  • It is a little bit of a Grammy Awards dress upon a second viewing.

  • Tristyn Pease

Hey, on behalf of those that have lived in the district; black is appropriate for the birthday parties of 5-year-olds. Also, you don’t want to out-vibrant the first family in a town that worships being dour.

  • pdquick

No amount of Pucci excuses lip-synching the National Anthem, day or night. OUT.

  • Mightiadd

The hair, the dress, and that ass are all there to distract everyone from the fact that she is a wildly successful performer with very modest talent.  The sound engineers should get at least half the credit for her singing career.  Nobody but Beyonce should bear the blame for her acting.

  • Alyssa Stanfield

Beautiful dress, completely wrong for the event. OUT. But I do love the earrings.

  • I know I’m late, but IN! she’s an entertainer, on a pretty big stage, she sang a pretty big song and the dress, although sheer, it’s not extremely revealing and it’s got a little sparkle, but not too much…yeah that’s alot for an IN, but IN from me it is…does that count for 3 votes? lol

  • Meelah

It didn’t fit the time or venue and I also thought it was tantamount to wearing a white gown to a wedding.  The First Lady, Dr Biden and everyone else are all dressed conservatively on the podium but here comes Beyonce dressed like she’s going to a ball.  The day was not about her at all.

  • Paola Quintero

Jay looks like a slimmer Andre Leon Talley! lol
