IN or OUT: Ashley Madekwe in Naeem Khan

Posted on January 16, 2013

With all our live-tweeting on Sunday night – 5 straight hours of it, from the Golden Globes red carpet, through Downton Abbey, and then back to the end of the Globes broadcast – we somehow completely forgot that Revenge was airing. Perhaps more telling, only one person noticed that we didn’t write a recap this week. We’ll get caught up for next week. Too many gowns and events going on right now.

And if THAT didn’t make a perfect intro and segue, then we can’t help you, darlings.

‘Revenge’ star Ashley Madewke attends The Art of Elysium 6th Annual ‘Heaven’ Gala Black Tie Charity Gala in a Naeem Khan gown.

Naeem Khan Fall 2012 Collection

This is an absolutely stunning dress. It comes right up to the line of being too much dress for little old Ashley to handle, but she’s pulling it off. It looks like it weighs a ton, but she’s working it.

But we have to say, the hair and makeup just doesn’t look good to our eyes. Since the dress is so formidable, we don’t think this demure hair is helping. It’s giving her pinhead. Not to mention it’s sloppy. And her face looks ghostly. But there’s no denying the whole look rests on that spectacular dress. Was it enough to overcome the hair and makeup? Kittens make the call.

Vote Now!

IN! Too breathtaking to be anything but.

OUT! Too much armor and face paint.

Rose Byrne’s sassypants were voted IN and Amanda Seyfried’s salute to the coke-fueled ’80s was voted OUT.

  • Yes, in. Love the dress so, so much. She’s totally pulling it off.

    • Me too!! Favorite dress I’ve seen in a long time!

    • Sobaika

She really is, and it would overwhelm most people. Too bad about the details, this could have bee a WERQ.

      • Violina23

        agree 100%. In!

  • greyhoundgirl

IN.  yes, the hair and make-up could use some tweaking but this is pretty fantastic.

  • IN. The makeup is a minor quibble compared to how beautiful that dress is, and how spectacular she looks in it.

    • halleygee

Agree – she is so striking and I have no idea who she is but she does look amazing.

  • Lilithcat

    In, despite the hair.

I do not understand why people wear fabulous gowns and let their hair look as though it hasn’t seen a brush or comb in days.

    • Agreed.  I’m even okay with the makeup here, so it’s an in, even with the  gym hair.

  • TropiCarla

Ack! This could have been perfection. The hair is awful but that dress on her is too slammin’ to give her an out.
She squeaks by with an IN from me.

  • elemspbee

OUT. She can’t handle this. It looks like it’s literally to heavy for her. To Helen Mirren, I say.

I was sifting through yesterday’s posts looking for the Revenge recap. But I figured gowns gowns gowns had to take priority.

  • Patricia Gillett

IN. Fantastic dress and the hair and make-up are only minor errors.

  • so THAT’s what happened to all those old NYC subway tokens. exact.same.pattern.

  • IN even though the hair is positively TRAGIC!

  • IN. The dress compensates.

  • IN. I don’t think I could give that dress anything but, no matter what else is happening.

  • lilibetp

I think her face looks ghostly because the silver bits are reflecting light onto her face.

    • You’re right – look at the reflection on her chin in the second-to-last picture.  The hair is to be ashamed of and I don’t care for the dark lipstick either, but still, a pretty easy In.

  • VioletFem

  • tereliz

IN! Love the dress so much I can pretend to like the styling. I bet this is a case of “looked better in person”. This dress needs more life. I like the color of the lippy, but the hair is a bit too yoga-esque and the earrings aere trying too hard to emulate the dress design. I’d have preferred more sparkle at the ear instead of the repetition of the circular shape of the paillettes.

  • In.
    Absolutely In.
Though I agree the hair and makeup need to be turned up a notch, everything below the neck is perfection.

    • zenobar

I noticed the workmanship also.  This dress is a feat of engineering and design.

      •  And to top it all off, the pattern has been matched all along the side seams. (sighing in my costumer’s heart)

        • Beardslee

I love it when you knowledgeable folks talk about stuff like this.  How do you sew this?  Lay them out and pin them?  Baste them?  Work over tracery?  And would you end up having to rip them off and resew as you go along and the lines get wonky?

          • Each piece is basted first to. Layer of very sheer material, often something like organza. Then the pattern it placed in chalk or washable ink onto the garment piece. Then the attachment of sequins begins. This style must be done one at a time.

          • Beardslee

What a labor of love for the very highly skilled.  Thanks.  So beautiful.

    • kimmeister

Holy crap, that’s thread?  I thought the sequins themselves already had a Mercedes design on them.  That’s incredible.

      •  Using multiple passes of thread is commonly done for very large sequins to keep them from skewing out of position, or catching on things.  Most often when its done this way, the pattern is repeated as accurately as possible throughout.  Part of what makes this so wonderful is that the same technique was used for every size of sequin on the dress.

        • Snailstsichr

The preferred way to attach sequins ever since the Middle Ages when they were made of real gold and silver and called “Oyes.” (I learned that at a workshop I took at Plymouth Plantation and have been dying to drop that bit of knowledge into conversation for years.)

          • kimmeister

Ha, this was your perfect opportunity to do so without souding pedantic at all!  🙂

        • Winter_White

Thank you for pointing this out.  I was already awestruck by the sheer beauty of the dress…now I’m gasping over this bit of insight!

    • littlemac8

Thank you for the sewing lesson…it only deepens my appreciation of this gorgeous dress.  Also the fit on her is flawless thus deepening the appreciation of the craftsmanship!

    • Karen Maslowski

I often think that having special knowledge of how sewing and fabric actually works makes a big difference in the perception of the quality of a garment. Sometimes I read comments here and I can tell the writer has no clue of how certain elements are handled in real life.

This gown is a perfect example. It’s true custom couture work, and breathtaking.

    • aeb1986

This may be a slightly amateur question but how do these designers make money? I understand designers like Burberry and Chanel that have a larger retail presence but for designers who primarily do high end womens fashion, arent they usually lending gowns to celebrities? Are there people who outright buy the gowns and lending to celebrities is the designers method of marketing?

      • Perfume, accessories, ready to wear lines, and branding. What we see here is mostly to gain people’s attention, with little expectation of real sales.

    • Little_Olive

Wow. See, that is where I thank life for making us all different. I would not have been able to do this without double-sided tape and an army of Belgian nuns.

  • MilaXX

Small IN. I really like the dress and hair, but the makeup is really bad.  It’s too heavy and it looks like it’s the wrong shade as well. I would have preferred a bolder eye and lighter lip. The saving grace is she is really working that dress.

  • Lizzyisi

    Wow. In.

  • altalinda

    Despite the sloppy hair, in.

  • FrayedMachine

In. I’d love the look pretty much entirely if it weren’t for the fact that she is simply not wearing her lip color. That is way too harsh for her. If the hair were a bit more cleaned up, I’d be 100% okay with it.

  • In but agreed, hair only looks good from one angle. It seems odd to see her in earrings that I don’t immediately covet.

  • zenobar

IN.  Sleekening the hair would be a good idea but to my eyes, everything else here is dead-on gorgeous.  Including the lips, because you can’t really accessorize a dress like this, and a deep berry lip is just the thing to draw the eye toward her face.

    • zenobar

Also I’m coveting the dress SO HARD.  I have nowhere glamorous to wear it, but I’d be happy just to swan around the house in it.

  • DaveUWSNYC

Dress great, but her face should match her back/hands.

  • gsk241

True, the hair and makeup could be better, but that dress is spec-damn-tacular!  IN!

  • IN! that dress is stunning!!

  • Love!  Divalicious!   (The model looks a bit like Olivia Wilde.)

  • IN! IN! IN! Yes, the hair needs a little work and so does the makeup, but damn it, that dress is amazing.

  • ecallaw1977

100% agree on the hair and makeup, but they’re not terrible, they just aren’t very good. And that is one of the most gorgeous dresses I’ve ever seen.  IN.

  • the back is stunning, in

  • ralish

In. Agree on the hair and makeup, but she’s killing that dress. In a good way.

  • IN, because that dress is totally cool, but I wish she hadn’t worn earrings that look like they came off of it.

  • CassandraMortmain

That’s one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve ever seen on the red carpet.  Stunning, breathtaking, formidable and just plain beautiful.  It could only be an IN.

She really needs to blot the shine but otherwise the makeup is fine.  Hair doesn’t bother me and the accessories work.  I would love to see this dress on someone with a little more attitude and presence and fashion cred but she doesn’t kill the look.

  • Annabelle Archer

    IN! So very in.
I love lip color, and with that gorgeous back (thank the gods for no illusion netting!) an up-do was the best option.  It could have been a little neater, but it seems a small quibble consider the look, as a whole, is disco ball fantastic.

  • mjude

IN.  agree about hair & makeup but that dress!

  • Mismarker

In, despite her makeup.  With such an icy, cool, metallic gown I feel her face needs some “warming” up.  Officially over the burgundy lip trend.  Probably because I can’t pull it off!

I also noticed there was no Revenge recap! Have you watched the latest episode? Surprising things happened.  Amazing, I know!

  • belfebe

IN.  The dress more than compensates for the lackluster hair and makeup.  You rock that sh*t girl!

  • in! i love the dress too much!

  • kimmeister

I’m torn.  The dress is amazeballs but you need to have a PhD in Wearing Things to pull it off, and I don’t think Ashley is there.

  • choco

UGH. OUT. All this extravagance and work put into this dress without doing anything for the woman wearing it. It makes her look bigger than she is, and looks heavy and uncomfortable on both ashley and the model. Exhibit A: Dress wearing the woman

  • HK4Seven

I don’t care how she looks, that dress is INCREDIBLE.

  • JosephLamour

I would have given her a WERQ just for the dress. Like, she could be wearing a scrunchie. IN!

  • nerdykitten

IN but it does need different hair. And a little kiss of color on the cheek bones.

  • Love, love, love from top to bottom.

  • IN. From the front I thought it was a little matronly but then from the back… divine! I think that harsh lip is the wrong colour and her hair could have done with some effort, but that is a minor quibble.

  • The gown is gorgeous, but I can’t sign off on anything else. The clutch doesn’t work for me, and I’m not crazy about her earrings or ring. Her face looks frozen (and way too light), the super-dark lip looks weird to me, and I can’t even with that hair. Kudos for picking out a great dress, but since I have problems with every other part of this look, I have to say OUT.

  • The dress is gorgeous, and makes her look very tall.  I love the lipstick, but not the hair, or the rest of the makeup.  Overall, for me it’s an IN though.  She looks glamorous and also comfortable.

  • Her hair is wrong. But this is an “in.”

  • IN. And I kinda like the hair. The dress is so sharp that the looser hair softens the look as a whole. The makeup is a little much, but it’s a minor quibble.

  • teensmom99

IN.  She looks so fantastic in that truly amazing dress that I wasn’t sure why you made it an IN or OUT but when I got to your comment, I understood.  She carries it off a lot better than the model.

  • Kristy Evans

IN. That dress is breathtaking. I agree that the hair needed to be sassier, and that lipstick color is a huge no, but who’s looking at her head?

  • In! She’s a wisp of a girl, but she’s working it!

  • lehen

in.  i cannot in good conscience give that dress anything else, despite the bad hair and makeup.

  • Dot

The dress is gorgeous, but everything else is a huge “meh.” The stark goth makeup isn’t doing her any favors and the hair looks like an afterthought.

  • Liz

I really need for her to lose that lipstick.

  • W O W. That DRESS!

  • geans

Yes. It’s so in. I can’t stop staring at her.

  • Monday1900

Stunning dress but that’s not the girl to wear it.  Would love to see it on Cate Blanchett or the like.

  • Fordzo

Jumpy claps! I love it so much, all I can do is jumpy clap!

  • lalahartma

  • DinahR

IN.  The dress is amazing, and probably uncomfortable as hell, but what price fashion?  She is wearing the heck out of that!  I think the hair needed some zhuzh and another color of lipstick might have worked better.

  • tony_q

Notice that the model’s hair is a bit disheveled as well… It’s as if someone thought that sloppy hair and makeup bring the look back to earth, rather than going full-on diva. I say brush your hair and give the gown to Manila Luzon.

  • MzzPants

    The dress gets an IN.

  • SewingSiren

I.N. Everything is grand. It is a departure from her usual, but a very nice one. So bravo for that too.

  • golden_valley

That dress looks like incredibly elegant chain mail.

  • ArditaFitzPeters

I noticed but I didn’t say anything because I figured you guys were just really busy and I didn’t want to nag! I’ve been checking the site a couple of times a day though to see if it’s up.

  • Pants_are_a_must

IN because that dress is simply spectacular and very flattering.

I like the concept of the make up, but the execution is not as good.

I would also say that even though she is pulling off that dress, I really wish a PhD-level wearer would also wear it, like Blanchett or Iman.

  • In! It is incredible, but the hair has to go….

  • frannyprof

  • In.  Loved the Back, and it looks to fit her to a T.

  • jw_ny

fantastic dress and she’s owning it!  I agree her hair is a bit of a mess.  I like a messy do, but this is just a bit too messy.  Her makeup isn’t bad…I think she’s getting reflections from the dress tho.

  • Jangle57

Agree about the hair, but otherwise she looks great and the dress is a stunner.  IN

  • Michael_Jones

I wasn’t sure until I saw the picture of the back, then it got an IN despite the hair (which is offense against the dress).

  • The dress saves it all. It’s pretty remarkable. Man, that hair is terrible though.

  • littlemac8

You know this is going to be an IN.  What a spectacular gown!  I know that’s supposed to be an artfully messy updo and it doesn’t bother me a bit.

  • Argghhh. That dress is the single best thing I’ve seen all week. See- why the hell isn’t Nicole Kidman wearing *this* dress instead of that stupid Shirley Temple bullshit that made her look 60? And yeah, this kind of is way too much dress for Ashley Madewki. And she is killing me – KILLING. ME. – with the yoga hair and slapped on lipstick. But I have to give it an IN in hopes that maybe an honest to Pete movie star will take pity on that dress and wear it to one of the hundred other events happening in the next few weeks.

  • alyce1213

This dress is insane.  It’s so stunning I can’t even see that her hair and makeup are not so good.

  • peachy

IN to the gown. OUT to that chick. she looks absolutely terrified.

  • Puck Thornton

IN. This gorgeous dress eclipses the sloppy hair and white shine on her face.

  • stagmania

    IN. That dress is gorgeous.

  • Maluca

She needed more “lit from within” makeup. But to me its a minor thing. I think she looks great! IN!

  • marilyn

In.  Her ‘do’ may be falling apart, but the makeup is fine and the dress is killer.

  • IN!

  • RebeccaKW

I’ve gotta go with In.  The hair isn’t my favorite, but it’s more that loose side-bang than the bun.  I really don’t like that lipstick on her.  But man, that dress is killa.  And the jewelry is just right.

  • INSKI. That dress is amazing and a work of art. The hair and simple eye make up frame it perfect. The bold lip is the right direction, but maybe one that wasn’t so matte or purple. A glossy wine would have been better.

  • Zippypie

OUT, only because all I see is dress, which is stunning, and not Ashley.  She’s not pulling it off with the tragic hair and makeup.  I hardly notice her.

  • Jessi03

In!  I had been wondering if you guys just decided to not recap Revenge anymore.  Glad you didn’t forget, but I wouldn’t blame you if you stop.

  • Lucas Huntington

  • PeggyOC

In, because the dress is stunning, but I do agree that the hair flap is distracting.  At least she put it up and didn’t defer to cocker spaniel hair.

  • IN only because of the dress. In total agreement with TLo on makeup & hair.

  • That dress is a whole lotta Deco fab-OO-lousness!!  But I think it’s too much dress for her.

    • alyce1213

I know, it’s like the Chrysler Building (upside-down).

  • Tatiana Luján

In, she looks stunning. Yes, the hair could have been better, but who cares.

  • In – finally someone who acknowledges winter!

Hair – maybe she was trying for Lady Mary Hair but didn’t have enough bobby pins? Do people still wear bobby pin?

  • That dress is incredible. IN, despite the hair.

  • gabbilevy

Yes, in, for all the stated reasons.

IN!  From the neck down.  🙂  She is so gorgeous, killah bod she looks amazing.  You are spot on about the makeup and hair of course!
I was missing the Revenge recap!  I kept checking back, but know you boys are swamped with Red Carpet looks.  Didn’t want to be a nagging Bitter Kitten!  I patiently wait your recap!  Love you guys!!!

  • Kathy_Marlow

IN!! I could do with more makeup but she’s working this!

  • IN – dress is gorgeous.  Fits beautifully.

  • IN, stunning look.

  • thecitysleeps

Out.  It looks too big and heavy for her.  And it kinda looks like plated with too big pennies on some parts.  I don’t know.

  • bertkeeter

Great dress….BUT she is to young for this. Give it about five years and then drag it out of the closet again!

  • snarkykitten

  • Deedles

Box it up and send it to Lucy Liu.

  • Claudia Fernandes

In, just because can take my eyes of the dress

  • B_C_J

Phenomenal dress and she is wearing it well. The hair should have been better but it is nevertheless an incredible look. IN

  • IN!

  • MarissaLG

IN! Are you kidding me?? This is amazing.

  • Imasewsure

Hair and makeup are out but that dress is amazing so IN IN for the dress itself… she disappears however next to that amazing dress

  • Jillaine13

In.  Because that dress itself and her body in it must never be banished to out land despite any shortcomings in the hair and makeup dept.

  • Out. Totally underwhelmed by the face and hair. They don’t do the dress justice.

  • The dress is so amazing, I tend to think it would be amazing on whoever was wearing it and I’m not really that impressed by -her-.  Can I give the dress an IN and the woman an OUT?  The hair is too meh, but the dress is bananas.

  • Judy_J

When I look at the photo with her head cut off, it’s a definite IN.  But when I look at the whole picture, I’m thinking OUT.  I’ve never seen hair and makeup bring a dress down so far.  I’m voting OUT.  When the dress is that spectacular, you’ve got to put some effort into the hair and makeup.

  • mmc2315

    IN!  IN!  IN!  Gorgeous dress!

  • Vickiefantastico

The dress is gorgeous. The hair is heinous. But I think the dress trumps the rest. IN.

  • Monabel

In. A small head can look elegant, see any first rate Mannerist portrait.

  • Totally agree.  I really love the dress and it suits her, but the lip colour is too dark and her face is too shimmery.  Or something.

  • IN. I actually really like the make-up. I was thinking, “If there’s ever a time to wear dark purple lipstick, this is it.” I think it makes the dress even more striking. The hair is okay. I like that she didn’t do anything that covered or overwhelmed the dress.

  • Scarlet39

I have to say OUT.  It’s too much dress for her, and the hair and makeup are unforgiveable.

  • Sara__B

Such a gorgeous dress! Such disappointing styling! OUT.

  • IN. sexy chiquita!

  • PrunellaV

The dress is kind of wearing her (La Lopez would WERQ it to death), but it’s too spectacular to be anything but IN, and the rest of her look is good enough.

  • I like the dress a lot from the distance photos, but up close all I could see were little Benz symbols.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN. Dress is too fabulous to be anything but.

  • Pennymac

The dress is an IN. She, however is OUT. It is wearing her.

  • Belvane

Out. I’d go so far as to give her a “girl, that’s not your dress.” Imagine this on Cate Blanchett.

  • Le_Sigh

Hrm.  Love the dress, hate the hair and makeup.

IN because she’s not doing that pursey half duckface lip thing she usually does.

  • Beardslee

Wow.  What a labor of love for the very highly skilled.  Thanks.

  • Janet B

What a shame her makeup and hair aren’t as amazing as the dress, a “mulligan” is in order here.
    This dress is truly amazing.

  • Dress and accessories: In
    Hair and makeup: Out

  • OrigamiRose

IN because of the dress.  Hair and makeup is not desirable, but it doesn’t ruin everything either.

That really is a spectacular gown.

  • Elizabetta1022

In! I love it. What a cool dress. Only wish I could pull it off!

  • Judy_S

In. For some reason I don’t mind the hair. That dress is a gorgeous monster.

  • The dress, HELL YEAH!  But, girl, that’s not your lipstick!

  • GORGEOUS. Absolutely stunning. This is the best she’s ever looked on the red carpet.

  • Cathy S

    Wow. In.

  • In. The dress is super fierce even though the hair and makeup is admittedly so-so.

  • kelsita421

In, based on the dress alone. Dislike what’s going on north of the neck.

  • Joyce VG

IN! Are you kidding me? She looks stunning.

  • tardisten

Everything above the neck gives me an eye twitch, but from the neck down? Fierce.As.Shit. She is rocking that dress and the smirky little smile says she knows it, shitty hairdo be damned. Totally in.

  • VicksieDo

IN. That dress is amazing in every single way!  Love the lipstick but the hair is limp.  Not a big deal though with that dress~~~

  • m0r0

    don’t like it on her.

  • decormaven

In, because that dress is a work of art. If her hair had been more properly styled, it would be a WERQ.

  • Stunning dress, don’t care for the lipstick.

  • formerlyAnon

In. But the hair almost ruined it. It makes the face-on photo look almost as if it were taken at a fitting.

  • IN. Absolutely gorgeous.

  • In. Without a doubt.

  • Lilak

Aw c’mon:  IN.  She may not be working (or Blanchetting) that gown the way we’d like, but she’s wearing it very nicely.

Glad she didn’t overdo the accessories.  The earrings are a little dull; could’ve been more interesting yet still properly understated.  But at least she didn’t make a grievous error.

Marginal note:  As far as the lip color goes, I’m just glad it’s not one of those too-pale nudes we’re seeing far too much of these days.  (Just a hint of color in a nude shade, and hey, even a few over-25s might be able to get away with it successfully.)

  • ankali

Oh God, IN to the INth degree. That dress is exquisite and exquisitely suited to her; I wish she’d nailed the hair and makeup, but they’re not bad enough to matter.

  • neofashionista

    IN a thousand times IN

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I sort of felt like  giving the dress IN and her Out, because how can you wear a gown like that and have your hair be such a mess?  But the dress is so beautiful and she does carry it off.

  • sweet_potato

Absolutely stunning. IN and WOW!! But oh, my dear lord, that hair. Ooh, honey no.

  • tired_mommy

  • CeeQ

IN – she’s definitely pulling it off but agree, hate the hair and make-up.

The real question for me is – do we think Shelly O should rock this at the next state dinner with a boring head of state (except the Queen, who is sassy)?!?! I think that would bring down the house =)

  • rumcg66

IN. I agree on the makeup, although I don’t hate the hair. It’s definitely an IN, though.

  • Samantha Irene

Out. I just can’t with the hair/makeup – sure the dress looks lovely, but overall – all I can think is “why with all that makeup, and why is your hair so sloppy”.

  • MsBusy

Out. The messy hair undoes the fierce dress by a mile.

  • IN

  • Dagney

She is waaaaay to young for that dress.  Give it to Helen Mirren.

  • IN. Love that she kept the hair soft with such a dress. Totally wish I could pull off that lipstick.

  • Stubenville

It’s a killer dress… but it should be on Iman.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Yep, that’s a lotta dress on a pretty, tiny lady. But it is striking and she is obviously in love with the way it looks on her, so I vote IN.

  • RoxieRider

    In. Divine.

  • Definitely an IN for me. The dress is spectacular.

  • TieDye64

IN. Definitely an IN from the neck down. Everything above the neck looks rather half-assed.

  • julnyes

The make-up (well the foundation) appears to be a bit too light and I like the idea of the hairstyle, but wish it had more oomph. The dress however is perfection and fits her like a dream so she is an IN for me.

  • crash1212

IN. That dress is a stunner and she looks fab in it. I don’t mind the make-up, but the hair never should’ve left the limo.

  • the_valkyrie

*sniff* I’ve been refreshing the site for 2 days for the Revenge recap…

  • Susan Collier

    Love that dress!

  • oh dear god, i love it.  IN IN IN!!

  • MRC210

In.  About the hair, at least it isn’t in spaniel ears over her shoulders.  The ideal ‘do for that dress would be a loose Lauren-Bacall length bob.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

IN. An absolutely fabulous dress and just the girl to rock it, but her hair is letting her down. Not enough to send this out.

  • another_laura

The dress is to die, and it looks like she actually GOT IT FITTED.  I’ll forgive the rest.

  • Introspective

She is gorgeous, and the dress is a knockout, full stop. her hair, while everyone is right to point out that its too low key for such a high volume outfit, doesnt look nearly half as bad as many an RC appearance these days.

the effect overall is stunning. IN without reservations for me.

  • In. But she needs to consult with some Miss Universe contestants to make it even more fierce, like with a giant headpiece and a spear.

  • Lisa Dugan

In! Stunning dress. She looks gorgeous.

  • Qitkat

Such an amazing, beautiful dress. I’m torn how to vote, but my first instinct was out, sad to say, because it ought to have been in. BUT,BUT,BUT, thanks to kiltdntiltd‘s extensive knowledge of the workmanship, I have revised my vote to IN,IN,IN. Because a dress that beautiful doesn’t deserve an out, even if wearee does not do it justice with the hair/makeup.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

OUT. Beautiful killer dress ruined by messy hair.

  • l_c_ann

The dress rules. (And it fits.)  (Tragic hair is forgettable.)

If you’ve time, check the comments among the earliest comments about how the dress was created.  Kiltd did a good job explaining.

  • Stunning. IN.

  • That dress is spectacular.  The hair and makeup are a catastrophe.  Barely IN.

  • AngelaGreen

She’s IN, that dress is fucking fabulous.  But neck up, not so great.  But work that gown, baby doll!

  • Amazing dress! she looks killa. IN.

  • Total IN – that dress is stunning and love the lip color!

  • IN! I love it! I would never have imagined that she could pull off such a dress yet she does!

  • BobStPaul

Totally on the fence on this one.  From the neck down it’s an in, from the neck up it’s an out.  That hair ruins the whole look.

  • zelavie

In, only because she’s amazing in that dress.  I’m just ignoring everything from the neck up.

  • This is what Cate Blanchett should have worn at one of the recent Hobbit premieres.

  • In. Wow.

  • warnerave

great dress, anne hathaway shd have worn this in the golden globes

  • trisker

IN.  Dress is really out of this world gorgeous.  Her skin color looks beautiful with the dress, especially her back.

  • “Perhaps more telling, only one person noticed that we didn’t write a recap this week.”

Woo! I got an indirect shout-out from T Lo! I was/am the dork who waits with bated breath for REVENGE recaps. Mostly because I have no effing clue what’s happening at this point, and you’re what-the-fuckery about it makes me happy/feel less cray.

Week = made. Oh, and IN. Even though I hate her (character).

  • Jennifer Coleman

I give this an IN, but I do wonder if silver is not a color that works for her.
I’m not sure if the metallic reflection of the dress makes her face look so ghostly, or the dress works better on either a brown or ruddy skin tone. The deep lip color is an embolding choice, but the dress comes close to wearing her as she is so delicate. I’m sure, however, Kerry Washington would really appreciate it if someone left this on her doorstep – it would be devastating on her!

  • SophieCollier

Love that dress, but not on her.  Just doesn’t do anything good to her complexion.  Perhaps if it had been bronze or gold or copper.  Something warm.

  • IN. She’s working it.

  • That is the most IN dress that we’ve had in a while. I love it so much. And I think the hair totally works.

  • IN

  • L.

    IN! Disregarding the minor quibbles.

  • that dress is pure warrior goddess, but the hair and make-up are scary school lunch lady.

  • Louise Bryan

Snaps for pulling off that dress.  She gets an IN.

  • melanie0866

    In.  DAMN, that’s a dress.

  • Pterodactyl111

    IN!!! I love it.

  • IN. I don’t mind the makeup – love that shade of lipstick. The hair is pathetic, but let’s just pretend she rode in from a Glamazon battle and hasn’t had a moment to remove her armor and freshen up – she just slapped on some lipstick to cover the stains the winesack will leave on her mouth. ELEGANZA AND GLORY, darlings.

  • guest2visits

Really gorgeous. I think the lip color could be a less severe, yet still vibrant shade. She’s too young for prune.

  • phrenk

I adore the dress.  The hair and make-up does nothing for me.  I abstain.

  • In, for sure. And I have to give a thumbs up to the lipstick color.

  • Trisha26

In. (But I do hair the hair & makeup.)

  • In for the amazing gown, Out for the hair and make-up

  • up with pod people

Breathtaking is right. I’m just astounded. Unf!

  • unbornfawn

It is too bad her hair is such a mess. A great hairdo and better makeup and she could have had a WERQ. The dress is stunning. IN.

  • demidaemon

IN. That dress overrules any minor styling quibbles.

  • quiltrx

IN.  The dress is so freaking magical that I can excuse the half-assed hair and harsh makeup.

  • I wish she had better hair and makeup.  Both are terrible and almost make this an OUT for me.  But the dress is doing so much work and the back of it is beautiful, so still.  Despite the crime of having bad hair and makeup, I’ll have to say she’s “in.”

  • jhedman

Why is she covered with Mercedes Benz logos?

  • ojosazules

  • In. Fierce as blade.

  • kathrineb

The dress is stunning and she wears it well. The lipstick and hair are a little ‘off’ to me, I don’t know if it works with this look.
    The lippie is so heavy.

  • barbarienne

Dress beats hair beats rock beats scissors beats paper beats lizard but they all lose to Spock.

Wait, what was I saying? Um, IN.

  • jenuwefa

Dress IN, hair and makeup OUT.

  • jorinde

definitely IN. Like the makeup. And I’m sporting the same hair most days, so I couldn’t really complain, could I?

  • bd73

amber heard’s bouffant would work well with this dress.

  • RzYoung

Incredible! As IN as in can get!

  • bluefish

Gorgeous dress — really spectacular without being tacky.  She looks comfy and happy in it.  Too bad about that shade of lipstick — too dark and aging on her.  Still … wow … insane workmanship on the gown and I love the back.  Her skin looks gorgeous against it.

beautiful dress and she is wearing it very well.  But that hair is sloopy and underwhelming for the dress proportions. Make up is a little underdone as well.

  • Verascity

I don’t think she’s pulling the dress off, to be honest. And I HATE the dark matte lip she’s always doing. OUT.

  • momogus

  • In, because that dress is the BIZNESS, but I agree that her hair and makeup needed to be more VAVOOM dramatic to match it.

  • I love the dress! It’s stunning!

  • Jessica O’Connell

I don’t like the lipstick at all, but otherwise I think she looks fantastic. Slap on a different lip color honey, but for now I call you IN.

  • OUT. The dress is a thing of total magnificence and she did not live up to it.

  • Alyssa Stanfield

In! Love the dress, love the lipstick (I wish I could get away with that color)…just wish the hair was different.

  • The lipstick is horrid but she’s still an IN.  That dress is exquisite.

I noticed the lack of Revenge recap but I also knew you were super busy.  I didn’t want to bug you (’cause I have in the past, lol).  Wasn’t especially eventful this week anyway except for the thing at the end that I was hoping wouldn’t happen.

  • kategs

That is one gorgeous dress and she is totally working it.  so IN.

  • I’ll dare to disagree and say out.  This dress to me goes over the line to costume-y.  Think of a Busby Berkley production of “We’re in the Money”.

  • libraangel

Oh dear, here we go again! This Libra (typical!) can’t make up her mind because I agree completely with you, T&L (I call you this because TLo is so much like JLo and I – um – let’s see – let’s be tactful – don’t appreciate her fashion sense!). I LOVE this dress, but on her!(NO), and the make-up! Worse still is the hair: can you please comb it, Ashley? But after all that (WHEW!), I’ll still give her an IN.

  • KatieKissinger

  • jenno1013

Out.  Gorgeous routine, sat the dismount.

  • Terrible_Person

In, but you’re completely right about the hair and makeup. That lip color, especially… ugh! It works, because the dress is great and she has the attitude to pull it off.

  • That dress is amazing but I’m not convinced she can pull it off…looks a little too like a girl wearing a woman’s dress if you know what I mean.  Perhaps it’s that hair (which I don’t mind but don’t think quite works) or that makeup which IS too dark for the ensemble.  Still, that dress is the business…just not on her.

  • IN… despite the wrong lip.

  • In

  • im sorry this is an OUT – its a gorgeoud dress but the hair/makeup just killed it- why the morticia face?

  • conniemd

  • EEKstl

IN.  A jaw-droppingly beautiful dress can forgive even the worst hair and makeup and frankly I’ve seen a lot worse of both.  The strong lip works but she needed a smokier eye, not a nude eye.  And the hair isn’t terrible – I like the low bun, it’s that loose side piece that is my least favorite.  But I quibble.  The dress looks great on her and I want it in my closet.

  • librarygrrl64

IN, but I agree on the hair and makeup. GORGEOUS gown.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m torn. The dress is gorgeous. The hair is not good. I think I’m going IN. But just barely.

  • Elleachaudaucul

    In. That! Dress!

  • Amazing, IN! Her lip color is a tragedy, though. It looks like she drank too much red wine before she got to the event.

  • GTrain

    IN for the dress

  • ccm800

In but yeah they did her whole head in.

  • Her hair is tragic but there is no way to call out on this stunning of a dress!

  • pax540

I suppose you aren’t doing any more Revenge updates, eh?
