IN or OUT: Amanda Seyfried in Vionnet

Posted on January 15, 2013

Oh, what the hell. Let’s throw this one up for a vote, too. Especially since we have a lot of “On the one hand … On the other hand…” reactions to it.

Amanda Seyfried attends the BAFTA Los Angeles 2013 Awards Season Tea Party in a Vionnet dress accesorized with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Jimmy Choo Lance Metallic Leather Sandal

On the one hand, it’s got that ’80s “I’m a high-powered lawyer with a cocaine habit who likes to hit the clubs” movie character quality to it, like something Daryl Hannah would wear. Or Lindsay Wagner, if we’re talking TV movie. On the other hand, it’s white, and this chickie’s wearing way too much white for her own good lately.

On the one hand, it has some personality and edge to it, which is always good when little blue-eyed blondes want to make an impression. On the other hand, it looks ripped open and the skirt just kinda hangs off her.

On the one hand, we think her hair and makeup look kind of fierce. On the other hand we think she needed a more declarative shoe.

Vote Now!

IN! Nothing more fabulous than a high-powered lawyer with a coke habit and a fondness for shiny clothes!

OUT! It’s doing her no favors.

Voting on Rose Byrne’s 21st Century Carol Brady outfit is still open.

  • That’s painful to look at. OUT.

  • Stubenville

    • Qitkat

Definitely, and I’m also distracted by the hair swoopie.

    • Are decent tailors and dressmakers on strike? There seems to be more than a few unhemmed and ill-fitting garments worn by celebrities on these pages lately.

  • Sobaika

Out. I love the shiny blouse but the skirt is too long and that is the wrong shoe.

    • 3boysful

       But it’s a cute shoe!  😉

The dress looks like “Office Worker!  You Can Go From Day To Evening By Adding A Shiny Blouse and Sandal!”

      Pitiful hem.

  • MilaXX

Out! hate the hair, hate the dress, hate the eye makeup

    • EveEve

Pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?  OUT.

  • Out — I think the fit makes it have more of an ’80s “my mom’s a a high-powered lawyer with a cocaine habit who likes to hit the clubs, and I like to play dress-up in her closet while she does” thing to it.

  • OUT… just doesn’t quite hit the mark.  if she were not so incredibly pretty, the outfit would be dreadful.

  • SouthernGirlRena

eeek – out.  I can’t say I like anything about this.

  • sweetlilvoice

Horrid outfit. It’s too drapey. I’d wear it on I’m-having-a-fat-day. The rest is good.

  • No. Out.

  • IN. It makes no sense, but it’s chic and she’s pulling it off…although a size smaller would have done her a few favors.

  • OUT.  Ill-fitting and sloppy looking.  Shoes are all wrong.  Do like her hair.

  • StellaZafella

in…but just barely….it’s a lot too low cut for any office I’ve worked in and too “day wear” for anything else.
    Maybe lunch at Hugo’s?

  • Tatiana Luján

i like eerything but the skirt part of the dress, wich is fugly and ruins it all. OUT.

  • gabbilevy

And if you’re going for high-impact, I think ‘meh’ is a failure. So… out.

  • hughman

  • mjude

  • OUT. That’s just sad.

  • Out. The clothes are wearing her again. Seriously, can’t she find a stylist who understands how to dress such a petite frame?

  • ZnSD

Didn’t Julianne Moore wear this in Boogie Nights?

  • belfebe

OUT! It looks kind of cheap and it’s not doing anything for her.

  • Cloveradams

All you LOTR fans will recognize the jarring Shiny Shirt under this lankly droopy white outfit as Mithril.

  • CheriCPat

I was going with out till you called it a 70’s lawyer on cocaine dress. Now I think she’s f****ing with us, and it makes me laugh.  Plus her hair and makeup are pretty, so ….. in.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

Calf-length always screams to me “I couldn’t make up my mind between knee-length and floor-length, but I already cut way too much off so I guess I should do knee-length. But I’m too lazy. Hem it is!”

For that alone, I’m voting this an out.

  • IAmJ

It’s an OUT for me. Kind of a depressing look. Plus, her left pinky toe is overboard and now I won’t be able to concentrate again.

  • Puck Thornton

Skirt looks like a towel, top makes her look big. Those shoes are no good when your toes hang out.

  • Allison Woods

I really like the shoes, but that dress…..coked-out inDEED.

  • MK03

That random piece of hair tucked into the rest of her hair is making me twitch.

  • BobStPaul

    Out.  Dislike everything about it.

  • Judy_J

OUT.  Sloppy, and I really hate that length.

  • altalinda

Out.  Her hair and makeup look great, but the dress is uninspiring and it bugs me that the shoes don’t fit her right.

  • MissAmynae

I’m surprised she got this before Amy Adams. Blech. Out. (regardless of who’s wearing it.)

ETA: love her hair and makeup, though.

  • JasmineAM

I want to say in because she looks just like my aunt, but sorry, this from head to toe is super FUGLY. OUT.

  • I have to say it’s OUT. I think the idea of the dress is nifty (yes, I said nifty), if only the white were an electric blue or something. My main issue though, is with the fit. All the droopiness of the dress, both bodice and skirt, would be a non-issue on a taller person. Girl, it’s just not your dress.

  • Droopy. Cocker Spaniel hair. Shoes look like they’re torturing her little toes. Out.

  • Out, the two fabrics of the dress just don’t go together, both in terms of texture and color.

  • alyce1213

Out, it’s an old lady dress suit.

  • leave_Blake_alone

I go with the “high-powered lawyer with cocaine habit” approach – IN

  • nannypoo

Hate the shoes, hate the hair. I think I would like the dress if it were a better fit.

  • j_anson

OUT. Manages to look frumpy AND tacky at the same time.

  • SorayaS

Out. It’s so unflattering. I’m wavering on the hair and makeup- it certainly doesn’t look sloppy but it’s not her best look. The shoes were well chosen though.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  Like the hair and makeup, but the dress is a mess.

  • kmk05

…I just wish I had a head of hair like hers.

Right, if her hair is the best part of the look, it’s an OUT. Tbh, it’s not totally horrible, but it’s just not doing her any favours. Makes her a bit invisible, and that’s something difficult with a drooped open top showing metallic bosoms.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

There is no otha hand! OUT

  • prettybigkitty

In.  Mostly because I really, really, really want her shoes.  There is just something about it that works for me.   And I suspect that it may look much better in person.

  • kimmeister

Blanche Deveraux is ticked that Amanda stole her “I want attention at the bar” outfit.  OUT.

She has pretty hair, but that one piece randomly tucked in just looks, well, random and haphazard.

  • Nariya

Out; she looks so fed up.

  • Annabelle Archer

More bad than good.  It should be sexier and more sleek.

  • It looks too big for her, particularly the baggy skirt. OUT.

  • marishka1

Out. Little girl dressed up in her mother’s clothes — the fit is terrible and too long.

  • trisker

    out. ridiculous dress.

  • crash1212

OUT. If for no other reason than Torture of the Pinky Toe. I must confess, there isn’t one thing about this look that I like. It’s baggy, it’s an ugly color, that slouchy white bodice wrap sits way to wide over the foil insert, it’s an awkward length and looks like the skirt is a loose bath towel. I hate the stick straight hair. God, I’m so annoyed right now.

  • OUT, looks like something I wore to the office Christmas party in 1989

  • Janet B

    Interesting outfit, thirty years ago.

  • PastryGoddess

You’d need about 10 more hands to make this work

  • OUT but she does have such pretty hair.

  • marilyn

    Out.  Boring and unattractive

  • lalahartma

    It’s fine.

  • Out! Out! Out!

  • beautiful, IN

  • librarygrrl64

  • schadenfreudelicious

Out, frumpy and dumpy even with the shiny…

  • l_c_ann

  • Jangle57

Oh why? why? why? Oh no, no, no. Though I do like her hair and makeup….

  • Violina23

Big blah from me on this one. Out…

  • Snailstsichr

OUT. This is too baggy. She is lost in it.

This dress pretty much screams, “I give up. Anne can have all the glory.”

  • CeeQ

The top part I am digging but the skirt ruins it for me. The shoes were disappointing as well. OUT.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. With the caveat that it could go the other way if the photograph is as unflattering as some red carpet photos are.

My other major issue, besides the evil power this dress has to make this slip of a girl look dumpy, is how the ends of her sideswept hair just lie there in several sloppy lengths, as if trying to cup her mostly obscured left breast. The straggliness takes away any pretension to chic the hair might have had if those ends had looked sleek and visually clean.

  • Melty sadness. OUT.

  • momogus

    Whoa – super-OUT.

  • What the hell, I’ll do her a solid. In, but only a capitalized in due to grammar.

  • demidaemon

I like the skirt and her face and hair. That’s…about it. OUT. That top is just not flattering and needed something doen to it.

  • OUT. Too droopy. Does nothing for her.

  • subwaycars

In, only because it’s the most interesting thing she has worn in ages.

Dear god but the cream/white/pale pink trend needs to end, stat.

  • ankali

OUT. It’s not fitted enough to be flattering, and I think her hair looks dumb. Still loving those Jimmy Choos, though; I need to find me some knockoffs.

  • MzzPants

It’s not a werq, but it’s not a bad look for her either.  Call me ‘nutty’, but I give it an IN.

  • It’s an OUT. But her hair looks FANTASTIC.

  • I like this! I’m digging the 80’s rich party girl vibe. She looks pretty hot.

  • PhillipWilde

I kind of like it.  I’ll say IN.

  • another_laura

A “declarative shoe.”  I love that phrase, I really do.

But this is Out.  It looks like something I wore in the late 70s.  Not that I was a high-powered lawyer with a cocaine habit, mind you, more like I was wearing this out to a fancy disco.  With satiny shoes.  Oh, the fashion crimes I committed….

  • Sara__B

Out. The only thing she got right was her makeup.

  • BrooklynBomber

OUT. This mid-length situation is a disaster and the outfit–described perfectly by TLo–has nothing to recommend it.

  • Aly Light

    OUT. Too droopy.

  • OUT. Droopy wrinkled mess.

  • understateddiva

Fit is off – she’s too petite to pull this off.  I’ve got a date Thursday, though, can I borrow her hair?

  • kinda weirdly nice. IN

  • libraangel

T&L: you are cracking me up!  ” A lawyer with a cocaine habit”! So funny!
I am on the fence like you guys cause I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either. Guess that means an OUT

  • Trisha26

Out. The top is reminding me of Jessica Chastain’s droopy boob GG dress. It’s too sack-y overall – that hem is horrible.

  • melanie0866

    Out.  Yuck.

  • Zippypie

Good idea, poorly executed so I have to say OUT.  I do like her hair and makeup here.  Much better than her washed out cockerspaniel look on the RC at the Globes.

  • Lily-Rygh

OUT.  Her  hair is boring and dull, hem is at a weird spot, skirt looks weirdly baggy, and her almost total lack of accessories makes me think not even her stylist really knew what to do with this.

And while I like the shoes, they aren’t right with this Krystle Carrington dress.

  • I like it. IN.

  • I’ve been spending too much time w you lately. By the time I scrolled to the last pic I was saying to my dog “bridge & tunnel gal, gonna try & get into Studio 54, 1976” (my year could be off).

  • Elleachaudaucul

I’m getting a 20s vibe. Out because of how the skirt is hanging there looking drab.

  • Louise Bryan

OUT.  The dress looks sad and droopy and weird, and yet she has such a pretty face.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT in every possible way. (Although LOVE your description of the high-powered attorney with a coke habit. Touche.)

  • L.

OUT. No excuse for someone that pretty to not have a mirror.

  • OneRing

“That shiny shirt is mine!” ~ Orcs in Mordor.  The hair, however, is fantastic!

  • Pterodactyl111

In. I don’t like her hair though.

  • bd73

it just doesn’t work on her. which is frequently her case. what is the problem fitting her?

  • jw_ny

dislike all except her shoes.  The skirt & jacket look like they’re made from an old towel..

  • guest2visits

Pretty girl in an awful dress.

  • frannyprof

Out. Miss Amanda needs to hire herself a hemstress.

  • SRQkitten

OUT. When you have her looks, money, access to designers and stylists to step out of the house looking like this….no.

  • Out!  What’s with the recent saggy-looking boob trend?  Between her a Chastain, ugh.

  • AnneElliot

Meh.  Though the shoes are cute.  I’m just happy to see pretty strappy sandals instead of those horrible platform heels or peep-toes the color of silly putty.

  • OUT OUT OUT. SO hideous and 80s and blech.

  • Out. The drape of the fabric looks hasty and unplanned.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m on Team “It looks ripped open and the skirt just kinda hangs off her.” In other words — OUT.

  • Airkisses

Hate the length of the hem, and the whole thing makes her look older and shapeless. OUT.

  • bertkeeter

On the other hand ….it stinks! I could almost live with the top…but with that tired skirt it is soooo out!

  • Out. The proportions of the dress are off because she’s too petite for it.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  Totally “Studio 54 after a hard day of secretarying”.

  • pdquick

To quote from Lesley Ann Warren’s stunning performance in Willing to Kill: The Texas Cheerleader Story, “You can tell a lot about a woman by the way she takes care of her skin.” OUT.

  • She dressed better when she was Plastic.

  • This is an OUT, for sure.  Nothing particularly redeeming about it.  Hem is too long for her, bodice is too odd for words, the draping is matronly, she looks crappy in that winter white, and the shoes are boring.  Kinda like the hairstyling.

  • urbanvagos

    Out. She looks beautiful…but she’s still wearing a trashbag-cum-toga.

  • unbornfawn

    Looks dumpy. OUT.

  • Jillaine13

OUT. Underwhelming at best.  Why does her stylist not prioritize her and do better?  Blahsville.

  • OrigamiRose

OUT.  Dumpy.  I’ll take the heels though.

  • Out. Favors. None. Maybe if the fit was better.

  • Kathleen B

  • Samantha Irene

OUT – whats with all the droopy boob dresses around these parts. Hair and makeup look good though.

  • RzYoung

IN i think she looks cool for once. She should wear this rather than ‘twee’ more often, she can do edgy

  • decormaven

Wow, she’s channeling Jerry Hall in the late 70s, early 80s. But she’s not selling it like Jerry could- and probably still can. If you’re going to wear a period piece, it’s best to study the masters, hon.

  • mhleta

OUT. What TLo said. I love the idea of this outfit but in reality it needs execution…as does her stylist.

  • Vickiefantastico

The whole outfit looks like a bag. Her hair is boring. Her makeup is too shiny. The shoes are only okay. So that’s an out for me.

  • BayTampaBay

    I love it! IN!

  • Judy_S

I can’t really decide but appreciate the analysis. I guess something in it appeals to me because I remember the 80s… but that would not be the best period for Ms. Seyfried.

  • i’m going to say in. is it fabulous? no. but it’s not a hot mess either.

  • Beardslee

out.  That opening looks like a gash and the skirt is sad.

  • TheLaurenJean

I like it. In! Though I would very much like to see her try a different eye makeup for once.

  • Oh dear, all wrong…..the metallic inset is too much…..always remember that less is more!

  • Terrible_Person

OUT. I agree with you that the hair and makeup look good, but the clothes are completely wrong for her, both in color and shape.

  • It’s different, and not perfect, but I like it. IN.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  I can’t believe this is up for a vote.  She’s looked awful this entire Les Miz press tour, which is a shame, because she’s appearing next to Anne “look at my fabulousness” Hathaway.  Fire your stylist!

  • Introspective

the metallic cami underneath goes with a different outfit than the one she has on. without it and the rest of the outfit is pretty blah, aka her go to theme for all of her RC looks for the les mis poledance inexplicably.

so more of the same. nothing to see here. OUT.

  • greyhoundgirl

  • Unflattering and sloppy looking. OUT!

  • teensmom99

  • kelsita421

    Overall impression = OUT.

  • amaranth16

Sigh, the idea is mad sexy but the execution sucks.  If she’d take out some of the material in the white part of the blouse (but keep the ripped-open look), bring up the hemline about 14 inches, and do something about the awful fit in the hips — maybe a more bandage-dress-y skirt — and we’re talking.

  • “that ’80s “I’m a high-powered lawyer with a cocaine habit who likes to hit the clubs” movie character quality to it”  which today translates to rather desperate middle aged woman who was a teenager in the 80s and somehow still thinks that look is cool going to her local watering hole just a little too dressed up to get just a little too drunk and still not dare to do anything that might turn her closely regulated life upside-down, though the man or woman who might have been able to open her world has been trying to catch her eye all night.  By which I mean, OUT.

  • JaneDC

Weird length and too handy drapey. Maybe it looked better on a 6 foot tall runway model, but this is not not not her dress.

  • DinaSews

  • Warrior89

  • Out. I hate that beige satin.

  • pepper76

She is waaaay too petite for most of the looks she’s attempting to pull off lately.

  • RebeccaKW

Out.  I do kind of like the top, but the skirt is sad.  Not feeling the hair or the shoes.

  • In, I like it.

  • thecitysleeps

    OUT for me.

  • kategs

There’s just something that’s not quite right, too gappy, shoes are meh.  I would kill for that hair though but on the whole?  OUT!

  • Cathy S

Don’t like that at all. Out.

  • leftcoastpickle

I love her, so it pains me to say OUT. But this is just so eh. She must get better clothes thrown at her.

  • peachy

it just hangs on her — maybe a size or two too large. (and so are her shoes)

  • mhlmh

though the bottom half could be shorter and tighter, still gets an IN.

  • MarissaLG

Ooowwwwt. Truly a terrible day to night/office to disco look.

  • MissFern

hike the skirt up and maybe it works?  but yeah, no.

can i say though, i like this look 1000x better than her golden globes dress.

  • tereliz

OUT! Only good from the neck up, Amanda, honey. This dress gapes open at the waist too wide and the material is so thin it looks cheap and the hem is uneven. But your face and hair look great!

  • sweet_potato

  • Tuana Neves

    Ugh. Out.

  • Out. No favors, indeed. Skirt length problems I think.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  I think this is more of a not-her-dress situation, though.

  • OUT!  Eighties movie redux.

  • littlemac8

What would Lady Violet say if Amanda here turned up for tea at Downton Abbey in this outfit????  I think we know…something about vulgarity!!!

  • Out.  And I quote: “On the other hand, it looks ripped open and the skirt just kinda hangs off her.”

  • newtonGOTbeaned

OUT. It’s unflattering and lumpy. She’s so beautiful, I don’t understand why she/her stylist can’t figure out how to dress her.

  • Lucas Huntington

Out.  You’re right about the hair and makeup tho – fierce.

  • julnyes

I like everything except the fit and length of the skirt. So I will give this a just barely over the line tiny in.

  • OUT. That hemline is atrocious.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I like the idea of the dress better than the execution. The white and silver in the dress work against each other. But her hair is fantastic. Out.

  • It’s got the 80’s vibe without the sexiness. The skirt kills it, and if she wanted to go 80’s one-shoulder hair, scraped back on one side, curls on the other, she should’ve gone there. OUT.

  • barbarienne

I am saddened. She finally wears her hair and makeup in a way that makes the most of her unique beauty, but it’s sitting atop that awful outfit.

This is a fashion blog, so sartorial considerations must supersede cosmetic. Therefore OUT.

  • kathrineb

Bad, bad 80s. So unflattering that it can’t even flatter a perfect figure like hers.

  • Jessica O’Connell

    OUT. Just out.

  • conniemd

Out. I like the blouse and jacket though.

  • I kind of like it.   It has a real throwback to the actual Vionnet while being current.  And I think the light shoe is a good balance for the heavy top.
